Abstract

These days, research on the classification of neutron/gamma waveforms in scintillators using pulse shape discrimination (PSD) techniques is a highly studied topic. Numerous methods have been explored to optimize this classification, with some of the most recent research being focused on machine learning techniques with excellent results. These approaches are mainly based on the use of 1-D convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this field, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) with high-sampling rate analog to digital converters (ADCs) have been used to perform this classification in real-time. In this work, we select a potential architecture and implement it with the help of the IntelFPGA OpenCL SDK environment. A shorter and C-like development of OpenCL enables a more straightforward modification and optimization of the network architecture. The main goal of this work is the evaluation of the needed resources and the obtained performance to prototype a complete solution in the FPGA. The FPGA design is generated as if it was connected to an ADC module streaming the data samples with the help of a Board Support Package developed for an IntelFPGA ARRIA10 available in an Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) module in an Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture (MTCA.4) platform. The prototyped solution has been integrated into Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) using the nominal device support (NDS) model currently being developed by ITER. 2. Time-resolved gamma spectroscopy of single events.

Abstract

In this article we present a method of characterizing scintillating materials by digitization of each individual scintillation pulse followed by digital signal processing. With this technique it is possible to measure the pulse shape and the energy of an absorbed gamma photon on an event-by-event basis. In contrast to time-correlated single photon counting technique, the digital approach provides a faster measurement, an active noise suppression, and enables characterization of scintillation pulses simultaneously in two domains: time and energy. We applied this method to study the pulse shape change of a CsI(Tl) scintillator with energy of gamma excitation. We confirmed previously published results and revealed new details of the phenomenon. Abstract

A fully digital, prototype data acquisition system upgrade for the TOFOR neutron time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at the JET experimental fusion reactor in Culham, England, has been constructed. This upgrade, TOFu (Time-of-Flight upgrade), enables digitization of associated time and energy deposition information from the TOFOR scintillator detectors, facilitating discrimination of spectral background due to unrelated neutron events based on kinematic considerations. In this publication, a kinematic background discrimination method is presented using synthetic data and validated with experimental results. It is found that an improvement in signal-to-background ratio of 500% in certain spectral regions is possible with the new DAQ system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, an FPGA-based plain delay line time-to-digital converters (TDC) is presented, together with a theoretical model on its timing properties. The TDC features an automated calibration system implemented in the on-chip processor of an SoC-FPGA, uses a low amount of FPGA resources and is therefore suitable for applications requiring a high number of channels, such as time-of-flight positron emission tomography (PET). We first investigated the importance of calibration and validated the theoretical model on the TDC timing properties. Finally, the device has been embodied into a two channel PET acquisition system and tested. We found the calibration essential to obtain a good time resolution (38-ps FWHM in comparison with a 78-ps FWHM obtained with the uncalibrated device). The model we developed is able to predict the TDC timing properties. They are shown to be related to the fundamental parameters of the used FPGA technology. In particular, the best achievable time resolution of this specific architecture (plain tapped delay line on FPGA) is set to about 30 ps by the sum of the setup and hold times of the registers in the FPGA. The timing resolution of the two-channel setup is about 118 ps.

Abstract

Basic concepts and the development of a high counting rate digital spectrometry system based on efficient ADCs and latest available FPGA are presented with the aim of using such a system, coupled to fast scintillators, in plasma experiments. The prototype system is a 1 channel 12-bit 1 GSPS digitizer with 2~\mathrm V\mathrm {pp} input voltage. Preliminary results tested with different radioactive sources are shown for low (0.03 Mcps) and high (2.2 Mcps) counting rates. Abstract

Time-of-flight (TOF) and coincident scattering measurements were conducted to measure the light response of a pressurized ^4He fast neutron scintillation detector as a function of deposited energy up to 5 MeV. The energy deposited in the detector by a neutron was measured by its angle of scatter and compared to the resulting light output. Whereas previous research has exclusively focussed on the energy information contained in the slow component, this work demonstrates that the fast component is also sensitive to neutron energy, and the entire scintillation signal can therefore be used. The gamma rejection capability of the detector was also measured for a variety of gamma sources. The detector demonstrated a inherent gamma rejection rate of 97.31%, which was increased to 99.89% after the application of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) algorithms. The characterization of gamma rejection and light response parameters will enable implementation of these detectors for neutron spectroscopy in mixed radiation fields. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

In modern positron emission tomography (PET) readout architectures, the position and energy estimation of scintillation events (singles) and the detection of coincident events (coincidences) are typically carried out on highly integrated, programmable printed circuit boards. The implementation of advanced singles and coincidence processing (SCP) algorithms for these architectures is often limited by the strict constraints of hardware-based data processing. In this paper, we present a software-based data acquisition and processing architecture (DAPA) that offers a high degree of flexibility for advanced SCP algorithms through relaxed real-time constraints and an easily extendible data processing framework. The DAPA is designed to acquire detector raw data from independent (but synchronized) detector modules and process the data for singles and coincidences in real-time using a center-of-gravity (COG)-based, a least-squares (LS)-based, or a maximum-likelihood (ML)-based crystal position and energy estimation approach (CPEEA). To test the DAPA, we adapted it to a preclinical PET detector that outputs detector raw data from 60 independent digital silicon photomultiplier (dSiPM)-based detector stacks and evaluated it with a [^18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-filled hot-rod phantom. The DAPA is highly reliable with less than 0.1% of all detector raw data lost or corrupted. For high validation thresholds (37.1 $\pm$ 12.8 photons per pixel) of the dSiPM detector tiles, the DAPA is real time capable up to 55 MBq for the COG-based CPEEA, up to 31 MBq for the LS-based CPEEA, and up to 28 MBq for the ML-based CPEEA. Compared to the COG-based CPEEA, the rods in the image reconstruction of the hot-rod phantom are only slightly better separable and less blurred for the LS- and ML-based CPEEA. While the coincidence time resolution ($\sim$ 550 ps) and energy resolution ($\sim$12.3%) are comparable for all three CPEEA, the system sensitivity is up to 2.5$\times$ higher for the LS- and ML-based CPEEA. Abstract

The good performance of a detector can be strongly affected by the instrumentation used to acquire the data. The possibility of anticipating how the acquisition chain will affect the signal can help in finding the best solution among different set-ups. In this work we developed a Monte Carlo code that aims to simulate the effect of the various components of a digital Data Acquisition system (DAQ) applied to scintillation detectors. The components included in the model are: the scintillator, the photomultiplier tube (PMT), the signal cable and the digitizer. We benchmarked the code against real data acquired with a NE213 scintillator, comparing simulated and real signal pulses induced by gamma-ray interaction. Then we studied the dependence of the energy resolution of a pulse height spectrum (PHS) on the sampling frequency and the bit resolution of the digitizer. We found that exceeding some values of the sampling frequency and the bit resolution improves only marginally the performance of the system. The method can be applied for the study of various detector systems relevant for nuclear techniques, such as in fusion diagnostics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The JET FILD is a scintillator-based Fast-ion Loss Detector optimized to measure fusion-born alpha-particle losses. This work covers its upgrade and absolute calibration in preparation for the following JET DT experiments. A fast scintillator material (TG-Green) has been installed in the JET FILD. A heater jacket is installed around the fiber bundle, responsible for transmitting the light from the scintillator plate, to anneal the fiber obscuring due to neutron damage. The JET FILD has been upgraded with a 1 Mpx camera and 2 MHz photomultiplier data acquisition hardware. Full-orbit simulations give an estimate of the shading effects on the scintillator plate of the first wall structures and provide a synthetic signal of the JET FILD. A detector instrument function enables absolute values of fast-ion losses using calibration factors. The calibration factors are made available in a shot-to-shot basis for the characterized species and energies and with corrections for the diagnostic conditions. The fast acquisition system sets the Nyquist frequency (1 MHz) above the typical mode frequencies (≈10 kHz), thus making it possible to identify MHD-induced fast-ion losses., This work was carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and received funding from the Euratom Research and Training Programme 2014–2018 and 2019–2020 under Grant Agreement No. 633053. Abstract

In the frame of the French trans-governmental R&D program against CBRN-E threats, CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) is studying the detection of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) by neutron interrogation with the Associated Particle Technique (APT). Coincidences including at least 3 fission neutrons or gamma rays induced by tagged neutrons are used to detect and distinguish SNM from benign materials in which lower multiplicity events of 1 or 2 particles are produced by (n,2n) or (n,n’\gamma) reactions. Coincidences are detected by fast plastic scintillators and correlated with tagged neutrons to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Dedicated data acquisition electronics (DAQ) have been developed with independent FPGA cards associated with each detector, so that the acquisition window can be opened by any of the plastic scintillators. DAQ tests in passive mode are presented, in which acquisition is triggered by the sum signal of all detectors. The system time and energy calibration and resolution are reported, as well as the qualification of numerical simulations thanks to experimental data acquired with simple setups using a ^252Cf source. Numerical studies for the design and performance of cargo container inspection are also performed with the MCNP-PoliMi computer code and the ROOT data analysis package. SNM detection in iron matrix is quite straightforward, but in organic matrix, data processing will need to combine more information to evidence SNM. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

A luminosity monitor, based on plastic scintillator detectors, has been developed for the SIDDHARTA-2 experiment aiming to perform high precision measurements of kaonic atoms and was installed in 2020 on the DAFNE $e^+e^-$ collider at LNF (Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, INFN). The main goal of this system is to provide the~instantaneous and integrated luminosity of the DAFNE facility by measuring the rate of $K^+K^-$ correlated pairs emitted by the phi meson decay. This task requires an accurate timing of the DAQ signals, as well as timing resolution below 1ns, in order to disentangle the $K^\pm$ signals from the background minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) produced during the $e^+e^-$ collisions at DAFNE. Abstract

International audience; The J-PARC T59 experiment, named WAGASCI, has been developing a neutrino detector to measure a cross section ratio of charged current interaction on nucleus between water and plastic targets with uncertainties of a few percent at the J-PARC neutrino beamline. The WAGASCI detector adopts three-dimensional grid structure of 3mm-thick plastic scintillator bars around water target, to perform three-dimensional reconstruction of a particle trajectory, to improve the acceptance for large angle tracks. The light from scintillator is read out by MPPCs. An array of 32-channel MPPCs has been newly developed for this experiment. The total number of channels for the WAGASCI detector is 1280. The SPIROC2D ASIC chip, developed by OMEGA, has been employed in the frontend electronics. SPIROC2D is an auto-triggered, bi-gain, 36-channel ASIC, allowing the measurement of the charge from one to 2000 photoelectrons and the time with 100ps resolution. It contains a 16-deep analog memory array, which allows 16 hits to be stored in an acquisition gate. The backend electronics utilize Spartan6 FPGAs. The system to synchronize the data acquisition to the beam timing from J-PARC has been also developed and the data acquisition system has also been developed. The data taking with neutrino beam has started since autumn October 16, 2017.

Abstract

International audience; DarkSide-50 is a detector for dark matter candidates in the form of weakly interacting massive particles. It utilizes a liquid argon time projection chamber for the inner main detector, surrounded by a liquid scintillator veto (LSV) and a water Cherenkov veto detector (WCV). The LSV and WCV act as the neutron and cosmogenic muon veto detectors for DarkSide-50. This paper describes the electronics and data acquisition system used for these two detectors. The system is made of a custom built front end electronics and commercial National Instruments high speed digitizers. The front end electronics, the DAQ, and the trigger system have been used to acquire data in the form of zero-suppressed waveform samples from the 110 PMTs of the LSV and the 80 PMTs of the WCV. The veto DAQ system has proven its performance and reliability. This electronics and DAQ system can be scaled and used as it is for the veto of the next generation DarkSide-20k detector
