In this paper, a new permanent magnet (PM) linear motor is proposed. This motor has a special structure with complementary stator flux, which helps to reduce the flux leakage and improve the utilization of the PM. The PMs are installed in a leaning manner, which increases the effective area of the PMs and enhances the field excitation. Hence, the force density of the motor can be improved and it will be, especially suitable for applications within a limited space. The motor structure and working principle are first explained. The design of the motor is then comprehensively investigated. An electromagnetic optimization method based on tabu search algorithm and finite-element method is proposed for the motor to improve its force density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new type of three-phase stator hybrid excited machine with permanent magnets (PMs) located at the slot openings of field winding slots is presented in this paper. It has the advantage of good flux regulation capability due to the field excitation. The machines with different stator/rotor pole combinations, i.e., 6-stator pole and 7-/8-/10-/11-/13-/14-rotor poles, have been comparatively investigated in terms of the open-circuit and on-load characteristics, as well as the influence of dc current and the unbalanced magnetic forces. Asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) rotor topologies can achieve torque enhancement in IPM synchronous machines without the increase of PM usage due to utilizing magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect by reducing the current angle difference between maximum PM and reluctance torque components. This paper investigates the influence of armature reaction on MFS effect in AIPM machines. A general model of IPM machines considering MFS effect is analytically developed and the AIPM and IPM machines using the same stator, rotor diameter and total PM amount are comparatively studied. It shows that the armature reaction affects the MFS effect in both AIPM and IPM machines and the influence is more significant in AIPM machine. The relationships between MFS effects in PM flux-linkage and inductance characteristics and current angles for maximum PM and reluctance torque components are revealed. It confirms that the change of current angles of torque components is due to the MFS effect in PM flux-linkage and inductance characteristics in both AIPM and IPM machines. Besides, the developed machine model considering MFS effect is verified by finite element analysis. In this paper, a hybrid-excited vernier permanent magnet (PM) machine is proposed. Two excitation sources, namely, the PM excitation and the electrical excitation are artfully combined together based on the homopolar topology, resulting in a parallel hybrid excitation. The flux regulation capability of the proposed machine is discussed and analyzed. Unlike other hybrid-excited machines, the flux regulation is realized based on the variation of the armature flux linkage rather than directly adjusting the air-gap flux. Performances of the bi-directional flux regulation are evaluated by the 3-D finite-element method. In order to verify the analytical results, the proposed machine is prototyped and tested as a generator. Both no-load and on-load performances are assessed. This paper investigates the appropriate permanent magnet (PM) arrangement of novel flux-modulating synchronous machines (FMSMs) in which PMs are embedded in the stator back iron. Using finite element analysis (FEA), three types of FMSMs with different PM arrangements are designed, and their performance characteristics are compared. As a result of the investigation, it was found that the FMSM with a V-shaped PM arrangement has a higher torque capability than do other FMSMs. The accuracy of the FEA simulations was confirmed through experiments on a prototype machine. This paper introduces a method for the drive cycle performance analysis of a permanent-magnet traction motor based on a fast magnetostatic finite-element analysis (FEA). The flux linkage and torque behavior of the permanent-magnet synchronous machine is studied by a nonlinear magnetostatic FEA as a function of direct- and quadrature-axis stator current components. In the analytical machine performance analysis, the current combinations producing the desired torque and minimizing the losses are determined. The iron loss is calculated with the time-transient FEA at no load. The maximum stator flux linkage, limited by the battery voltage, is taken into account. The drive cycle analysis, based on optimal current component surfaces, is carried out for a traction motor of an electric sports car. This paper explores the use of speed harmonic for accurate and fast maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) control of interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). A novel MTPA angle calculation approach is proposed, in which the MTPA angle is directly calculated from the phase angle of the speed harmonic that is induced by an injected harmonic current. At first, the relation between the speed harmonic and machine parameters is derived from the IPMSM model, which shows that the phase angle of the induced speed harmonic can be utilized to cancel the machine parameters in existing MTPA equation. Thus, a new MTPA equation is derived, which does not involve machine parameters for MTPA angle calculation. Compared with existing methods, the proposed approach is independent from the machine and drive nonlinearities. Moreover, the MTPA angle is directly calculated from the derived MTPA equation, so the proposed approach is fast and computationally efficient. Thus, the proposed approach is suitable for both on-line applications and building off-line lookup tables of MTPA angles for IPMSMs. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated on a laboratory IPMSM drive system. Analytical calculation methods for all the major components of the synchronous inductance of tooth-coil permanent-magnet synchronous machines are reevaluated in this paper. The inductance estimation is different in the tooth-coil machine compared with the one in the traditional rotating field winding machine. The accuracy of the analytical torque calculation highly depends on the estimated synchronous inductance. Despite powerful finite element method (FEM) tools, an accurate and fast analytical method is required at an early design stage to find an initial machine design structure with the desired performance. The results of the analytical inductance calculation are verified and assessed in terms of accuracy with the FEM simulation results and with the prototype measurement results. In permanent magnet synchronous machine design, a limited number of stator and rotor slots distorts the air-gap flux distribution and its effective length. It causes machine parameters to vary with the rotor position. The rotor flux linkage harmonics introduce nonsinusoidal back-EMF, which causes current harmonics when conventional PI current controller is adopted. Those machines suffer from high-frequency torque ripple due to air-gap flux harmonics in low-speed region. However, in high-speed region, where the torque ripple is filtered out by the mechanical system, the torque ripple may be disregarded. In this case, torque-ripple suppression methods and the associated harmonic current components generate losses. Therefore, a sinusoidal current control is required to reduce the undesired harmonic losses. In this manner, this article focuses on the sinusoidal current control strategy based on harmonic voltage injection, which requires knowledge of rotor magnet flux linkage harmonics. This article also proposes both off- and on-line schemes for the identification of rotor magnet flux linkage harmonics. These methods do not require any proprietary machine design details such as the shape of stator or rotor for finite element analysis. Commonly used PI plus resonant controller is also designed and its disadvantages in terms of speed-dependent gain and stability, in comparison to the proposed scheme, are highlighted. This article presents the design and analysis of a 12/7 (numbers of stator/rotor poles) hybridly excited asymmetric stator pole doubly salient machine (HEASPDSM) with a main focus on the special topology and operational principle by using the analytical and 2-D finite element analysis. A full comparison is conducted on the average torque, torque ripples, no-load back electromotive force and flux regulation capacity under the condition of different structural parameters, which can provide good references to the machine design. A 12/7 HEASPDSM is designed and the main performance indexes are analyzed in detail. Based on the parameters, the performance of 12/7 HEASPDSM is compared with traditional 6/7 doubly salient permanent magnet machine (DSPMM) with the same volume and thermal load. Finally, a prototype of the 12/7 HEASPDSM is manufactured and tested to validate the theoretical analysis. The results fully demonstrate that the HEASPDSM possesses the merits of strong flux regulation capability, higher torque density, and wider constant power speed range benefitted from the dc field winding than the traditional DSPMM. A novel partitioned primary linear switched flux permanent magnet (PLSFPM) machine is presented, which adopts an odd number of primary poles. For the design objective of minimum thrust ripple, the optimized novel PLSFPM machine with 9 primary/10 secondary (9/10) pole combination is obtained. To this optimized PLSFPM machine, the electromagnetic performance is analyzed in detail and compared with that of the original one. The merits of this 9/10 pole combination are also proved by comparative study with other three available pole combinations. Moreover, comparison between the proposed PLSFPM machine and a conventional linear switched flux permanent magnet machine has been performed, which shows that the proposed machine can achieve better performances under both open-circuit and load conditions. The corresponding prototype is manufactured and the influences of possible machining errors during manufacture on thrust force performance are discussed. Finally, the experiment is carried out, which verifies the predicted results.
