Accurately estimating building heights is crucial for various applications, including urban planning, climate studies, population estimation, and environmental assessment. However, this remains a challenging task, particularly for large areas. Satellite-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has shown promise, but it often faces difficulties in distinguishing building photons from other ground objects. To address this challenge, we propose a novel method that incorporates building footprints, relative positions of building and ground photons, and a self-adaptive buffer for building photon selection. We employ the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) photon-counting LiDAR, specifically the ICESat-2/ATL03 data, along with building footprints obtained from the New York City (NYC) Open Data platform. The proposed approach was applied to estimate the heights of 17,399 buildings in NYC, and the results showed strong consistency with the reference building heights. The root mean square error (RMSE) was 8.1 m, and for 71% of the buildings, the mean absolute error (MAE) was less than 3 m. Furthermore, we conducted an extensive evaluation of the proposed approach and thoroughly investigated the influence of terrain, region, building height, building density, and parameter selection. We also verified the effectiveness of our approach in an experimental area in Beijing and compared it with other existing methods. By leveraging ICESat-2 LiDAR data, building footprints, and advanced selection techniques, the proposed approach demonstrates the potential to accurately estimate building heights over broad areas. Building height information is essential for many applications such as urban planning and population density estimation. The building shadow length varies according to seasons, which is shown as different digital number values in multi-temporal images. Thus, the bi-temporal satellite remote sensing images of Sentinel-2 are used to estimate the buildings height in this study. An area of 15 km × 15 km in Beijing, China is taken as the study area. By preprocessing the data, the remaining pixels are split into two parts: 70% as the training data set and the rest as the testing data set. Then, one classification model and three regression models are proposed with using Random Forest (RF) method. Based on the testing data, it shows that the accuracy rate of the classification model has reached 98.4% with the kappa coefficient of 0.93. And the regression models' root-mean-square error (RMSE) is 0.61 floor for 1-6 floors group, 0.41 floor for 7-12 floor group, and 0.98 floor for above 12 floor group. The final RMSE is 1.62 floor with RF models. In general, this study shows the feasibility of using satellite mid-resolution optical image to estimate the building height and provides an important reference for regional building height estimation in the future. The local climate zone (LCZ) scheme has been widely utilized in regional climate modeling, urban planning, and thermal comfort investigations. However, existing LCZ classification methods face challenges in characterizing complex urban structures and human activities involving local climatic environments. In this study, we proposed a novel LCZ mapping method that fully uses space-borne multi-view and diurnal observations, i.e. daytime Ziyuan-3 stereo imageries (2.1 m) and Luojia-1 nighttime light (NTL) data (130 m). Firstly, we performed land cover classification using multiple machine learning methods (i.e. random forest (RF) and XGBoost algorithms) and various features (i.e. spectral, textural, multi-view features, 3D urban structure parameters (USPs), and NTL). In addition, we developed a set of new cumulative elevation indexes to improve building roughness assessments. The indexes can estimate building roughness directly from fused point clouds generated by both along- and across-track modes. Finally, based on the land cover and building roughness results, we extracted 2D and 3D USPs for different land covers and used multi-classifiers to perform LCZ mapping. The results for Beijing, China, show that our method yielded satisfactory accuracy for LCZ mapping, with an overall accuracy (OA) of 90.46%. The overall accuracy of land cover classification using 3D USPs generated from both along- and across-track modes increased by 4.66%, compared to that of using the single along-track mode. Additionally, the OA value of LCZ mapping using 2D and 3D USPs (88.18%) achieved a better result than using only 2D USPs (83.83%). The use of NTL data increased the classification accuracy of LCZs E (bare rock or paved) and F (bare soil or sand) by 6.54% and 3.94%, respectively. The refined LCZ classification achieved through this study will not only contribute to more accurate regional climate modeling but also provide valuable guidance for urban planning initiatives aimed at enhancing thermal comfort and overall livability in urban areas.
