This study aims to evaluate the interaction effect of socio-economic environment (SEE) in the relationship between the eating location (EL) and diet quality, in children and adolescents. Data included Portuguese children and adolescents (3–17 years) from a National Dietary Survey Sample (IAN-AF 2015/2016, n 987). Dietary intake was obtained by 2-d food diaries (children) or 2–24-h-recall (adolescents). Participants were classified into four groups of EL: 'Home', 'Other homes', 'School' and 'Restaurants'. Diet quality was measured as a higher adherence to a healthy eating pattern. A previous developed socio-economic classification was used, and participants were grouped as belonging to a low socio-economic environment (LSE) or middle-high socio-economic environment (MHSE). Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between EL and diet quality, stratified by the SEE. A statistically significant interaction effect was found (P < 0·01) for the SEE in the association between EL and diet quality. After adjustment for potential confounders, in LSE, participants belonging to 'Other homes' (β = –2·07; 95 % CI:–3·70, –0·44) and 'Restaurants' (β = –3·31; 95 % CI: –5·08, –1·54) had lower scores in the diet quality score, comparing to 'Home'. In MHSE, comparing with 'Home', 'Restaurants' showed lower diet quality (β = –1·56; 95 % CI:–2·65, –0·48), while the 'School' had better diet quality (β = 0·90; 95 % CI: 0·16, 1·64). The SEE influences the association between EL and diet quality and, belonging to more disadvantaged SEE, might represent a higher risk of unhealthy eating habits when eating out-of-home. Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of pain neuroscience education (PNE) and neck/shoulder exercises with no intervention in adolescents with chronic idiopathic neck pain (CINP). Methods: Forty-three adolescents with CINP were randomly allocated to receive PNE and shoulder/neck exercises (n = 21) or no intervention (n = 22). Data on pain intensity, neck flexor and extensor muscles endurance, scapular stabilizers endurance, pain catastrophizing, anxiety, and knowledge of pain neurophysiology were collected. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention. Results: All participants completed the study. Analysis using ANCOVA revealed a significant increase in the neck extensors endurance capacity (adjusted mean ± SE change = + 47.5 ± 13.5 s versus +14.2 ± 13.1 s) and knowledge of pain neurophysiology (adjusted mean ± SE change = + 9.8 ± 3.2 versus −0.6 ± 0.6) in the group receiving the intervention. A higher mean decrease in pain intensity, pain catastrophizing and anxiety and a higher mean increase in the scapular stabilizers endurance capacity were also found in the intervention group, but differences did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Results suggest a potential benefit of PNE and exercise for adolescents with CINP. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The impact of sarcopenia on hospitalisation has been under intense investigation; however, little is known about the association between sarcopenia and their costs among hospitalised patients. The aim of the present study was to quantify the association between sarcopenia and hospitalisation costs among older adults. Methods: A cross ‐ sectional study was conducted in 201 hospitalised older adults in a general hospital. Sarcopenia was identified according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria. Muscle mass was assessed by anthropometric measurements, muscle strength through handgrip strength evaluation and physical performance by Timed Up and Go Test. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment—Short Form (MNA ‐ SF), and hospital costs were assessed with the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) system. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to quantify the association between sarcopenia and hospital costs. Increased hospital costs were considered when a patients′ cost was higher than the mean cost of an average patient (€2396.24). Results: Within this sample, 10.4% sarcopenic, 43.8% at nutritional risk and 14.9% undernourished older adults were identified. After adjustment, sarcopenia (OR = 5.70, 95% CI 1.57 – 20.71) and low muscle strength (OR = 2.40, 95% CI 1.12 – 5.15) were associated with increased hospital costs. Study Design Longitudinal descriptive exploratory study. Objectives To evaluate in primigravid women the immediate effect of drawing-in and abdominal crunch exercises on inter-rectus distance (IRD), measured at 4 time points during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Background There is scant knowledge of the effect of different abdominal exercises on IRD in pregnant and postpartum women. Methods The study included 84 primiparous participants. Ultrasound images were recorded with a 12-MHz linear transducer, at rest and during abdominal drawing-in and abdominal crunch exercises, at 3 locations on the linea alba. The IRD was measured at 4 time points: gestational weeks 35 to 41, 6 to 8 weeks postpartum, 12 to 14 weeks postpartum, and 24 to 26 weeks postpartum. Separate 2-way, repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were performed for each exercise (drawing-in and abdominal crunch) and each measurement location to evaluate the immediate effects of exercises on IRD at each of the 4 time points. Similarly, 2-way ANOVAs were used to contrast the effects of the 2 exercises on IRD. Results Performing the drawing-in exercise caused a significant change in width of the IRD at 2 cm below the umbilicus, narrowing the IRD by a mean of 3.8 mm (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2, 6.4 mm) at gestational weeks 35 to 41, and widening the IRD by 3.0 mm (95% CI: 1.4, 4.6 mm) at 6 to 8 weeks postpartum, by 1.8 mm (95% CI: 0.6, 3.1 mm) at 12 to 14 weeks postpartum, and by 2.5 mm (95% CI: 1.4, 3.6 mm) at 24 to 26 weeks postpartum (P<.01). Performing the abdominal crunch exercise led to a significant narrowing of the IRD (P<.01) in all 3 locations at all 4 time points, with the exception of 2 cm below the umbilicus at postpartum weeks 24 to 26. The average amount of narrowing varied from 1.6 to 20.9 mm, based on time and location. Conclusion Overall, there was a contrasting effect of the 2 exercises, with the abdominal crunch exercise consistently producing a significant narrowing of the IRD. Purpose: The aim of this study was to study the association between the consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years and body mass index (BMI) at 4 years, using a cross-lagged panel design. Methods: The present study included 589 children evaluated at 2 and 4 years of age, as part of the birth cohort generation XXI. Information was obtained by face-to-face interviews. Consumption of energy-dense foods (salty snacks, soft drinks, cakes, and sweets) was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. Children's weight and height were measured by standard procedures, and BMI standard deviation scores (BMI z-scores) were calculated according to the World Health Organization. Linear regression and cross-lagged panel design models were fitted to estimate the associations between the consumption of energy-dense foods and BMI z-scores (controlled for maternal age, education and prepregnancy BMI, and children's exact age at 2 years). Results: The consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years was significantly associated with their consumption at 4 years ( β = 0.522, 95 % CI 0.432-0.612). Children's BMI z-scores at 2 years were associated with posterior BMI z-scores ( β = 0.747, 95 % CI 0.688-0.806). In the cross-lagged analysis, consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years had no effect on subsequent BMI z-scores ( β = −0.030, 95 % CI −0.095 to 0.035) and BMI z-scores at 2 years were not significantly associated with the consumption of energy-dense foods at 4 years ( β = −0.012, 95 % CI −0.086 to 0.062). Conclusions: Consumption of energy-dense foods and BMI tracked over time, but the consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years was not associated with BMI z-scores at 4 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
