Purpose: Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendations (SBAR) is recommended as a standardized model to improve communication between health professionals and increase patient safety. Correct use of the SBAR model reduces communication errors, facilitates rapid decision-making, and increases patient safety. Therefore, effective use of the SBAR model among health care professionals contributes to safer patients. This study examines the implementation and evaluation of the SBAR communication model in nursing handover by pediatric surgical nurses., Design: The study had a pretest-post-test semi-experimental design., Methods: Data were collected between April 1 and June 30, 2022 from 24 nurses, who worked at two pediatric surgery units of a training research hospital in Turkey. Ethical approval and written informed consent were obtained prior to the study., Findings: The mean age of the nurses was 26.00 ± 3.43 years and 75% were female. The mean score obtained from the handover rating scale was 60.33 ± 11.11 (18 to 70). The pretest and post-test scores obtained from the SBAR communication model questionnaire were 60.00 ± 20.64 (20 to 90) and 92.50 ± 9.89 (60 to 100), respectively. 66.7% of the nurses answered no to the statement "Using the SBAR communication model did not contribute positively to the handover." The majority answered yes to the items other than this statement, the ratio of those who answered yes and no to the statement "The SBAR communication model caused me to waste time during the handover" was equal, and the majority completed the SBAR handover form., Conclusions: Some of the nurses felt that the SBAR communication model made a positive contribution to shift performance, while others felt that it did not. Although half of the nurses considered the SBAR communication model to be a waste of time, it was observed that no negative events occurred during the use of the model and that the nurses were willing to use the SBAR communication model. This manuscript presents a case study detailing the application, and the outcome, of the Watson's Theory of Human Caring to an infertile woman receiving in vitro fertilization treatment. The implementations of the ten carative factors, inherent in the theory, to provide a supportive nursing care are chronicled. The sustained nursepatient interaction and the achievement of the ultimate goal of having the patient reach the phase of “healthhealing-wellness” (carative factor #7) were detailed. This case study is an example of the value of a theory-based nursing practice that can enhance human health and healing in stressful life events, such as “the moment” when the patient in this case study realized her inability to have conceived a much desired child, even with promising medical treatments, and turned to her nurse for healing. Background: Nurses are having some ethic problems in giving quality care in health care system. Objective: The aim of the study is to define the ethical problems nurses in Turkey encounter. Methods: A total of 171 nurses, who are working in a military hospital in Turkey, participated in the study. The study is a descriptive one. The questionnaire form, which is used as a means for data acquisition, is developed by the researchers, as the result of a literature review. Questionnaire forms were filled up by the nurses, who accepted to participate in the study. Results: Most of the nurses participating in the study stated that they realize they are facing ethical problems when conflicts on patient requests break out. The majority of the nurses stated that the greatest ethical problem met is the priority of using sources. Organ donation is shown as the ethical problem least encountered. Nurses answered the question regarding the resources used in resolving ethical problems as superiors in 75.27 % and as colleagues in 65.2%. Conclusion: Definition of ethical problems nurses encounter during practice, will be guiding in determining what to do in order to put up with those problems during nurses' training and practices. One of the most challenging aspects of being an EFL teacher is coping with reticent students who are largely unwilling to communicate. This mixed-methods single case study, conducted with volunteer preparatory class students experiencing speaking anxiety at a Department of English Language and Literature in Turkey, aims to determine whether explicit training in communication strategies alleviates English-major students' speaking anxiety. The study employs a pre-posttest experimental research design and combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. Both verbal and numerical data indicate that the students' use of communication strategies, language production, and classroom participation are relatively higher compared to their levels before the strategy training. The results suggest that strategy training can effectively reduce EFL speaking anxiety among students. Accordingly, the study provides valuable insights for educators, practitioners, and program designers aiming to enhance students' oral communication skills in EFL settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of an eight-week quasi-experimental study of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners at the tertiary level in Turkey. The purpose of the study was to reveal the extent to which EFL learners' intercultural communicative competence (ICC) was enhanced as a result of communication with native and non-native speakers of English with the means of a/synchronous communication tools as compared with the instruction given in a real classroom setting. The data were gathered using a variety of distinct means that entailed questionnaires administered before and after the treatment, weekly reflection papers to explore the participants' thoughts about experience, and semi-structured interviews held after the treatment. All the data were analysed with the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 and Maximum Analysis of Qualitative Data (MAXQDA 10) software. The findings evidenced that telecollaboration had a positive impact on the participants' intercultural communicative competence. The study explicates the benefit of telecollaboration for developing learners' ICC over classroom instruction and underpins the necessity of integration of telecollaboration into language learning programs for educators, planners and institutions. Aim: This study aimed to explore nurses' views and experiences regarding remaining silent. Background: Silence is a barrier for organizational improvement and can occur for many reasons; it cannot be simply defined as the opposite of speaking out. Method: An exploratory qualitative design was used for this study. Data were collected using semi‐structured interviews in 2016 with 24 nurses who were recruited by using a snowball sampling method. Results: Three themes emerged as a result of the thematic analysis: fear, silence climate and disengagement. The first theme contained three subthemes: avoidance of being seen as a troublemaker, financial loss and reluctance to reveal lack of ability or knowledge. The results indicated that nurses remained silent when they felt unsupported or psychologically unsafe in their work environment. Conclusion: Encouraging nurses to express their opinions is essential for creating a psychologically safe nursing work environment and an organizational climate that supports open communication. Because the majority of healthcare professionals are nurses, they can act as role models and change agents for other nurses if they are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions without fear of retribution. Silence negatively affects work environment and causes job dissatisfaction.Silence is a threat to the development of new ideas and prevents nurses from raising concerns about critical issues. Background: In the Netherlands, all women aged 30–60 years are invited to participate in the national cervical cancer screening programme, which is aimed at early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions. One fourth of the Dutch population has a migration background, with Turkish and Moroccan immigrants being the largest immigrant populations. Turkish‐ and Moroccan‐Dutch women show lower screening participation rates and a higher incidence of cervical cancer, compared to native Dutch women. Since current information materials are not tailored to these women's needs, we developed a short culturally sensitive educational video to facilitate informed decision‐making for cervical cancer screening among Turkish‐ and Moroccan‐Dutch women. This article describes the development process of this video and the lessons learned. Methods: Using the Entertainment–Education communication strategy, we collaborated with an interdisciplinary team of Turkish‐ and Moroccan‐Dutch women, researchers, public health experts, and creative media professionals. We developed the video following the different stages of the Media Mapping model: Orientation, Crystallization, Design/Production, Implementation, and Dissemination. Each stage is described in the paper. Results: The video was developed in Moroccan‐Arabic, ‐Berber and Turkish, and emphasized three main themes: (1) more certainty about having cervical (pre)cancer and the possibility to prevent treatment, surgery, or premature death, and because of this, being there for the children, (2) according to the Islam, a woman should take good care of her health, and (3) anxiety, shame, and privacy. Conclusions: A short culturally sensitive educational video, delivered as part of a larger intervention together with the current information brochure, was developed based on theory and grounded in the needs of Turkish‐ and Moroccan‐Dutch women. The value and effectiveness of this intervention to facilitate informed cervical cancer screening decisions are evaluated in a randomised controlled trial. Nurses working in infertility clinics need to know effective ways of communicating with infertile women to help them experience their treatment period comfortably. However, they can face various stressors which can reduce the motivation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate communication between nurses in infertility clinics and infertile women from the perspective of both groups. The qualitative study was conducted in an InVitroFertilization clinic, in Turkey with five nurses and seven female patients. Data obtained from semi-structured interviews were thematically analyzed. Three main themes were identified: facilitators of communication (verbal and nonverbal facilitator), barriers to communication (related to nurses and women), and requirements for improving communication. Factors such as appropriate tone of voice, smiling, provide eye-to-eye contact are expressed by women and/or nurses as facilitators. The high tone of voice, yelling, etc. for women, stress and the low education level of women for nurses were barriers. The requirements expressed by women were nurses receiving training to improve their communication skills, and not having prejudice, while requirements for nurses were enough time, women being sincere, taking psychological support. This paper investigates object-based and action-based iconic strategies and combinations of them to refer to everyday objects in the lexicon of an emerging village sign language, namely Central Taurus Sign Language (CTSL) of Turkey. CTSL naturally emerged in the absence of an accessible language model within the last half century. It provides a vantage point for how languages emerge, because it is relatively young and its very first creators are still alive today. Participants from two successive age cohorts were tested in two studies: (1) CTSL signers viewed 26 everyday objects in isolation and labeled them to an addressee in a picture-naming task, and (2) CTSL signers viewed 16 everyday objects in isolation and labeled them to an addressee before they viewed the same objects in context being acted upon by a human agent in short video clips and described the event in the clips to a communicative partner. The overall results show that the CTSL signers equally favored object-based and action-based iconic strategies with no significant difference across cohorts in the implementation of iconic strategies in both studies. However, there were significant differences in the implementation of iconic strategies in response to objects presented in isolation vs. context. Additionally, the CTSL-2 signers produced significantly longer sign strings than the CTSL-1 signers when objects were presented in isolation and significantly more combinatorial sign strings than the CTSL-1 signers. When objects were presented in context, both cohorts produced significantly shorter sign strings and more single-sign strings in the overall responses. The CTSL-2 signers still produced significantly more combinatorial sign strings in context. The two studies together portray the type and combination of iconic strategies in isolation vs. context in the emerging lexicon of a language system in its initial stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background : Telling personal stories of violence has been central to recent advocacy efforts to prevent violence against women around the world. In this paper, we explore the use of personal storytelling as a form of activism to prevent femicide in Turkey. This study is part of a broader storytelling initiative called SHAER (Storytelling for Health: Acknowledgement, Expression and Recovery) to alleviate the psychological and emotional suffering of women who have experienced gender-based violence in high-prevalence settings. Objectives : We conceptually explore personal stories of violence as a form of both distributed agency and activism. This conceptual framework is used to answer the following research question in the Turkish context: How do women use their personal stories of interpersonal violence for their own benefit (support) and that of others (activism)? Methods : Our study is based on 20 in-depth semi-structured interviews with women who have experienced violence and were purposefully recruited by the 'We Will End Femicide' Platform in Istanbul. Interviews were conducted between March and August 2019. We used inductive and deductive thematic analysis to identify instances of personal storytelling at three levels: intrapersonal, relational and collective. Results : Our results show how the use of personal storytelling can provide a means of healing from experiences of violence. However, this process is not linear and is often influenced by the surrounding context including: the listener of the story, their reaction, and what social networks the woman has to support her. In supportive social contexts, personal storytelling can be an effective support for activism against violence: personal stories can provide opportunities for individuals to shape broader discourses about violence against women and the right of women to share their stories. Conclusions : Telling one's personal story of violence can both support women's agency and contribute to the collective struggle against violence against women more broadly.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe hearing health care and education experiences of children with cochlear implants (CIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential psychosocial effects of the pandemic on these children and their parents/family members. Method: The study used a cross-sectional survey design. The study sample comprised two groups, namely, parents/family members of children with CIs (study group, n = 70, Mage = 44.6 ± 12.4 years) and parents/family members of children with normal hearing (control group, n = 58, Mage = 43.8 ± 11.5 years). Parents/family members completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), and the Family Perspective Profile form, as well as the Demographic Information form. Results: The PSS scores of the study group were higher than those of the control group (p = .001). However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups in the CAS scores (p = .896). According to the Family Perspective Profile form, almost half of the parents/family members of children with CIs reported that their children experienced difficulties in education and hearing health care services during the pandemic and showed some changes in their attitudes and behaviors. Conclusions: During the pandemic, the stress levels of parents/family members of children with CIs were higher than parents/family members of children with normal hearing. In addition to the challenges posed by the pandemic, the difficulties that parents/family members of children with CIs experience in meeting their children's additional needs related to accessing education and hearing health care services may have contributed to increased stress levels. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of students' flipped learning readiness (FLR) on engagement, programming self‐efficacy, attitude towards programming, and interaction intensity in the information and technology classrooms where programming is taught with the flipped classroom (FC) model. The study group of this research, which is designed by the relational screening method, consists of 371 students studying in middle school. Structural equation model was used for the data analysis. The results of the study revealed that FLR and its indicators in the programming teaching conducted with the FC model are significant predictors of engagement, attitude, programming self‐efficacy, and interaction intensity. FLR is most strongly related to programming self‐efficacy, whereas it is most weakly related to interaction. The most striking result of this study is that the FC model is an effective option in terms of providing engagement, interaction, self‐efficacy, and learner attitude, which are the key components for the success of the instruction. It is thought that this study assists to create an awareness on the impact of FLR on students, on subjects that frame in‐class attitudes, and behaviours of students. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of web‐based teaching on paediatric nursing internship students' self‐confidence and anxiety levels in the clinical decision‐making process. The study sample consisted of 61 students who received internship training in the Pediatric Nursing department. There were 30 students in the control group and 31 students in the experimental group. Data were collected using a sociodemographic form, and nursing anxiety and self‐confidence levels were measured using a clinical decision‐making scale. The data were analysed using a t test, a Mann‐Whitney U test, a correlation analysis, and a regression analysis, along with power and effect size. The self‐confidence scores of the experimental group were higher than the scores of the control group (p < 0.05), and the anxiety scores of the experimental group were lower than the scores of the control group (p < 0.05). The web‐based training program accounted for 17.8% of the change in self‐confidence and 12.8% of the change in anxiety level. Therefore, the web‐based training program was effective in increasing nursing students' self‐confidence levels and decreasing their anxiety levels in the clinical decision‐making process. Student nurses should be aware of their sexual myths to be able to offer holistic nursing care to their patients. The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of student nurses about sexuality and sexual myths. The study population included fourth-year student nurses of a nursing department of a university (N = 160). The purposeful sampling method was used to explore the sexual myths of the student nurses. The study sample consisted of 31 student nurses. Data were collected by asking the participants a total of three questions in the individual in-depth interview form. After transcribing the audio-recorded interviews, the transcripts were combined with observation notes and then raw data were processed in computer. Finally, a content analysis was performed. As a result of the content analysis, two main themes with 13 subthemes emerged in the study: “Thoughts/Judgments About Sexuality” and “Thoughts/Judgments About Sexual Myths”. The student nurses stated that sexuality is seen as a taboo subject in the society they live in, there should be no sexual activity in old age, and they had difficulty in explaining what sexual myths mean. Also, the participants stated they thought that only men can masturbate, but married individuals and women should not masturbate, and watching pornographic films is wrong behavior. This paper is crucial to determine student nurses’ level of awareness of their own sexual myths and those in their own society and to determine their opinions and thoughts on sexual myths. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess preschool children's hearingrelated quality of life and to introduce the scale, originally titled "Preschool Hearing Environments and Reflections on Quality of Life Questionnaire" (Preschool HEAR-QL), to the literature through Turkish adaption, validity, and reliability analyses. Method: Our study included 210 children aged 2--6 years: 110 with hearing loss (56 cochlear implant users and 54 hearing aid users) and 100 with normal hearing. Demographic data were collected and then the Preschool HEAR-QL, which was translated into Turkish, was administered twice at 15-day intervals. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to determine whether the factor structure found in the original scale development study was confirmed in our sample (construct validity). Cronbach's alpha, intraclass correlation scores, and the test--retest method were used to assess the scale's reliability as the findings were analyzed using paired samples t tests. Results: The children with hearing loss had lower scores than their normalhearing peers, and the difference was significant in the subdomains of behavior and attention, hearing environments, and communication. The subscale of the Preschool Period Listening Environments and their Reflections on Quality of Life Scale consists of 23 items, and Cronbach's alpha value was found as 0.922 in the first application and 0.926 in the second application (high reliability). In the model established for validity analysis, χ² /df = 2.156, root-mean-square error of approximation = 0.074, standard root-mean-square residual = 0.078, goodnessof- fit index = 0.830, adjusted goodness-of-fit index = 0.789, comparative fit index = 0.895, and Tucker--Lewis index = 0.881 (good model fit). In terms of test--retest reliability, the correlation between the two measurements was 0.837, and there was no statistical difference between the test--retest scores (p = .15). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Preschool HEAR-QL scale was proven to be a valid and reliable scale for assessing the hearing-related quality of life of children aged 2-6 years. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the experiences and transitional care needs of Turkish frail older adults living in the UK and determine how this information can be utilized to improve the provision of culturally sensitive care during the transitional period. Design: Qualitative descriptive research with semi‐structured individual interviews. Methods: "The 'Silences' Framework guided the research design, from conceptualizing the research question to structuring the report of final outputs. For this study, semi‐structured, in‐depth interviews were conducted with sixteen older adults living with frailty and five family caregivers between January and May of 2023 in the United Kingdom. Results: Major themes that were identified included: (i) information and communication, (ii) care and support, (iii) the role of culture and (iv) trust and satisfaction. Further analysis, through discussion and immersion in the data, revealed that care transition periods were presented alongside three phases of transitional care: pre‐transition (during hospitalization), early‐transition (the period between discharge and the 7th day after discharge) and late transition (the period between the 8th day and 12th month after discharge). Conclusions: Our study revealed that the communication and informational needs of frail older individuals change during the transition period. While Turkish older adults and family caregivers expressed satisfaction with healthcare services in the UK, many struggled due to a lack of knowledge on how to access them. Impact: The support of family caregivers is a crucial component in facilitating transitional care for frail older patients, as they help in accessing healthcare services and using technological devices or platforms. The Reproductive Health Working Group (RHWG) was established in 1988 in Cairo to advance research in the Arab countries and Turkey on the health of women, broadly defined. The paper considers the ways in which the group contributed to global health conversations through three examples of interdisciplinary research that, in privileging local contexts, modified or even challenged prevailing approaches to health and often raised entirely new issues for consideration. The three examples cited in the paper are: (i) the network’s early research on reproductive morbidity; (ii) a broad set of ongoing studies on childbirth/maternal health; and (iii) emerging research on health and conflict. Aim: This study examined the experiences of Syrian refugees in a community centre in Turkiye as they access mental health services and receive psychiatric nursing care. Design: A qualitative design was adopted in the study. Methods: Data were collected from southern Turkiye between November and December 2021. The researchers conducted three semi-structured focus group interviews. Colaizzi's phenomenological method was followed to analyse the qualitative data. A total of 19 Syrian refugees participated in the focus group interviews. Results: Three key themes related to immigrants' experiences of receiving mental health services and nursing care were identified: barriers to receiving mental health services, coping with negative experiences in Turkiye and satisfaction with mental health services. The participants identified the barriers they experienced while receiving health services as those pertaining to language, discrimination and stigmatization. They also mentioned the methods of coping with these negative experiences in Turkiye. Despite their negative experiences, they expressed satisfaction with the mental health services they received, especially psychiatric nursing care. Conclusions: This study determined that Syrian refugees face barriers in accessing and receiving mental health services. They stated that mental health professionals in Turkiye approach them with empathy, particularly those in psychiatric nursing. Healthcare professionals may be trained in culturally sensitive care to increase awareness. Impact: Studies have frequently examined the experiences of nurses providing care to refugees, but few have focused on evaluating nursing care from the perspective of refugees. Syrian refugees have reported various obstacles in accessing and receiving mental healthcare services. Health professionals, especially psychiatric nurses in mental health psychosocial support centres, must facilitate the processes to eliminate these obstacles. This paper utilizes OECD's original PISA 2012 dataset to investigate the impact of access to ICT, student background and school/home environment on academic performance of students. Using cross-section data from 4848 15-year-old students in Turkey, ordered logit models are developed and analyzed. The results indicate that (i) availability of internet connection at home or school and student's possession of his/her own room at home have positive impacts on academic success, (ii) internet connection at schools may not be used for school-related activities and therefore distracts student's attention from schoolwork, (iii) as student-per-teacher ratio or school size increases, the academic success of students declines, (iv) pre-primary education and education in student's native language contribute to academic achievement, (v) there is a positive relationship between education level of parents and student's performance at school. Using additional data from 22,273 students, the paper also presents an international analysis that compares the results from Turkey with those from Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Breast milk is regarded to be the gold standard of baby nutrition. That is why, breastfeeding is the only recommended form of nutrition for the first 6 months of life. The World Health Organization supports initiatives to increase breastfeeding rates. Nevertheless, in Türkiye and worldwide, the rate of babies receiving only breast milk for the first six months is not at the intended level. Despite that the breastfeeding process is considered physiological, the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding are affected by several factors. To initiate breastfeeding and increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding of babies, breastfeeding education and counseling as well as the appropriate approach to mothers must start from the prenatal period and continue during the childbirth and postpartum period. Recently, technological developments and the use of information and communication technologies in the health field have demonstratedthatbreastfeedinginterventionscanextendbeyondtraditionalcare. Theuseoftechnologytoencourage breastfeeding, enhance breastfeeding skills, ensure the continuation of breastfeeding, and support breastfeeding has been observed to lead to improvements in the breastfeeding process. Preliminary information suggests that the use of telephone, internet, social media, and virtual reality-based applications as well as standard educational materials by nurses who educate and counsel women regarding the breastfeeding process during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period may improve the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding. The focus of this research was to investigate how school administrators in Turkey managed the crises caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, which was a deadly threat for humanity worldwide. The research questions guiding this study are: 1) Did schools have a crisis plan? 2) If yes, how was the plan implemented in a crisis situation?; 3) What kind of changes were made in the plans?; 4) What should administrators do in such crisis situations?; and 5) What was done in the COVID-19 outbreak? The research was conducted as a qualitative case study which involved 105 school administrators. Due to the pandemic conditions that hindered direct face-to-face interviews and interactions, data collection was carried out online via a Google drive form with open-ended questions. The findings demonstrated that there were two main headings as the basis for the research problems. The first was the existence of crisis planning by school administrators; the other was the status of implementation of these plans. Background: Literature shows that Virtual Patients (VPs) find extensive usage in the field of health sciences, especially in the post-pandemic period. VPs are successfully utilized in developing various effective skills like medical interview. However, this technology is quite new in Turkey and has not yet been used in communication skills training in a structured form. This research aimed to develop a virtual patient to improve the communication skills of medical students. Methods: Developmental research method was used in the study. The implementation phase involved the one group posttest quasi-experimental design. The study group comprised of experts in various fields and 213 medical students. Needs Analysis Form, Scenario Building Form, System Validation Form, Communication Skills Assessment Form, and Interview Form were used as data collection tools. The research primarily concentrated on ensuring minimal errors within the system and enhancing students' communication skill scores. Results: The study found that VP was effective in teaching communication skills. Communication skills improved from a mean score of 36.74 in the first interview with 15 students to 74.2 in the final application with 198 students. It was determined that the students who practiced repeatedly (n = 26) made 17% more effective interviews than their first practices (score: 89.2). The script matching of the VP was 83%. Other data obtained from the students generally showed that the VP application was developed in accordance with the purpose, that it was user-friendly, and that the scenarios were adequate. Conclusion: VPs like this have the potential to develop skills such as history taking, clinical reasoning, etc., which are very important in the field of health sciences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Parents, who make the final decision regarding their child's treatment, play a significant role in their dental care. Parental approval is important for each stage of treatment and may affect the physician's approach to the treatment. Therefore, it is essential for pediatric dentists to comprehend which behavior management techniques (BMTs) are acceptable to parents and to identify the factors that influence their acceptability. Methods: Parents who were bringing their children for dental treatment answered a survey on the acceptance of twenty contemporary BMTs. The sociodemographic data of the parents and the age, gender, and Frankl behavior rating scale (Frankl) scores of their children were recorded. Parents were asked to indicate their level of acceptance of each BMT. Binary logistic regression analysis was designed to see the predictors of "accepted" and "declined" answers. Results: According to acceptance frequencies, the most accepted technique was communication and communicative guidance. The most declined technique was parental absence. The child's age, gender, Frankl score, parental educational status, and parent type predict the acceptability of some BMTs. Conclusion: This study revealed that pediatric dentists must consider parent and child factors when selecting BMTs for children. Internet addiction is a pervasive problem among adolescents today. Previous research identifies socialization processes, including parenting, as important for these behaviors. The current study tested the links between perceived maternal monitoring, support, communication, and conflict and Internet addiction among youth, and whether these relationships were mediated by adolescent self-control. It also tested whether these links were moderated by sex. Data were collected from 569 high school students in Turkey (54.1% female, Mage = 15.92, SD = 1.15). Path analyses were used to test study hypotheses. Findings showed that perceived monitoring, support, communication, and conflict were directly associated with self-control and also indirectly with Internet addiction, mediated by self-control. No direct effects were found for monitoring, support, or communication on Internet addiction. Moderation tests by sex found only one significant difference for monitoring. Findings provided evidence that perceived maternal parenting processes as well as adolescent self-control are important in understanding variability in adolescent Internet addiction among youth, albeit indirectly so for maternal parenting processes with the exception of conflict. Thus, improving both parenting, and particularly self-control, appear to be fruitful avenues for prevention and intervention work in addressing Internet addiction among youth. Highlights: Perceived mother-adolescent conflict was directly associated with adolescent Internet addiction, whereas maternal monitoring, support, and communication were not. Perceived maternal monitoring, support, communication, and conflict were consistently associated with adolescent self-control. In this study, it was aimed to bring the scale with proven psychometric qualities to Turkish culture by testing the validity and reliability of the Technostress Scale developed by Nimrod to measure the stress caused by the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in older adults. After the scale was translated into Turkish, it was distributed to 551 participants in total selected by convenience sampling method, aged 60 and over. For the content validity of the scale, expert opinion was consulted. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was applied to determine the factor structure of the scale, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to test the accuracy of the determined factor structure, and the internal consistency coefficient was calculated for its reliability. As a result of the EFA, it was found that the percentage of the total explained variance was.67 and that the items were grouped under five factors. According to the results of the first and second order CFA, it was found that the Turkish version of the scale showed an acceptable factorial validity. Moreover, the reliability study indicated that Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency of the scale was.78 and it was found that correlations changed between r =.28–.56. The results of the analysis indicated that the Turkish version of the Technostress Scale is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used to assess the stress levels of older onliners using ICT. Objective: This study aims to examine in depth the perceptions of postoperative symptom management and coping experiences of individuals with prostate cancer. Material‐Method: The study was conducted with 15 individuals with prostate cancer using a phenomenological research design, which is a qualitative research design. Interviews were conducted via the WhatsApp application. Results: The data were analysed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. In the data analysis, two categories, five main themes, and 15 sub‐themes emerged. In the category of symptom management perception, there are themes of pain management processes, the use of complementary and alternative therapies and practices to cope with symptoms and improve quality of life. In the category of coping experiences, the themes of individual coping, interpersonal relations, and productivity were obtained. Conclusion: Our study suggests that individuals with prostate cancer have difficulty in symptom management in the postoperative coping process, but they managed them effectively with the support of their spouse, family, and health care professionals. Animals can evade interference from anthropogenic noise using strategies such as shifting frequencies upwards or increasing the duration of their signals. In this study, we compared the time and frequency‐related characteristics of songs and rain calls of Common Chaffinches Fringilla coelebs inhabiting rural forests and an urban park in Turkey. Most of the song phrases and rain calls did not differ in any of the characteristics measured between urban and rural Chaffinches but, contrary to our predictions, terminal flourish phrases of the songs had lower minimum frequencies and broader bandwidth in urban territories. These results suggest either that noise has limited effect on the Chaffinch vocalizations or that Chaffinch vocalizations in urban habitats are less well adapted for efficient transmission. Aim: This study aims to measure the knowledge and skill levels of academicians, who work at the faculty of health sciences of a foundation university, about vulvar self-examination. Method: This descriptive study was conducted between October 1, 2020 and June 15, 2021 with a total of 78 female academicians. The data was collected using a 36-item introductory information form and the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale--II (HLBS-II) and evaluated using SPSS package program (version 21.0). In addition to descriptive statistics, both t-test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare the academicians' scale scores. The relationship between the variables was evaluated with Pearson's correlation analysis. A p value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Both an ethics committee approval and relevant institution permissions were obtained for conducting the study. Results: The mean age of the academicians was 36.73±10.08 years. Of them, 29.5% were married, 30.8% had never heard about vulvar self-examination (VSE) and 47.4% had VSE. Their mean HLBS-II score was 134.99±18.97. The academicians with VSE training had statistically significantly higher mean scores of health responsibility, spiritual development and interpersonal communication than those who did not receive VSE training (p≤0.05). In addition, a statistically significant relationship was found between their age and nutrition (p<0.03), menopausal age and stress management (p<0.00), and duration of marriage and stress management (p<0.02). Conclusion: To increase the frequency of VSE practice among women, it is important to increase the VSE knowledge of health academicians. Since academicians and health workers are role models for positive health behaviors in the society, both deficiencies and shortcomings in vocational training should be determined, and relevant studies to bring solutions to these problems should be emphasized. Introduction: This study aims to discuss cultural intelligence levels and intercultural communication apprehension of nurses. Method: This study was designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional study, and it was conducted with 252 nurses working in a hospital in a south city of Turkey. The research data were collected via a "Personal Information Form" designed by the researchers, "The Cultural Intelligence Scale," and "The Intercultural Communication Apprehension Scale." Results: It was concluded that nurses had moderate levels of cultural intelligence and intercultural communication apprehension, which were positively correlated (p <.001). Cultural intelligence levels and intercultural communication apprehension were further correlated with certain variables such as age, gender, job duration, foreign language proficiency, and their experiences in foreign countries (p <.05). Discussion: In light of the results, it was suggested that moderate levels of intercultural communication apprehension can be a supportive factor in developing cultural intelligence. It was also added that preventing excessive intercultural communication apprehension and supporting nurses to improve language skills and to have abroad experience may be beneficial in developing cultural intelligence. Even though they are conscious, patients who are unable to speak while connected to a mechanical ventilator have serious difficulties in communicating with healthcare staff. This research aimed to determine the effectiveness for patients of a computer-based communication tool (CBCT) and to compare these results with patients using a routine method. This quasi-experimental study was conducted with 90 intubated patients. It was found that 20.0% of the patients using CBCT stated that they had difficulties in communicating, while this rate was 82.2% among patients not using CBCT. Compared with participants in the control group, experimental group patients reported a lower median score for the anxiety levels (23.0 [20.0–39.0], 29.0 [20.0–57.00], p <.001) and higher mean comfort levels (130.2 ± 9.0, 109.6 ± 13.3, p <.001). Positive impacts of the CBCT are its suitability for patients who are dependent upon ventilation for different reasons and their improved ability to communicate effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Efforts to contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus would fall short without strong primary health care. Aim. In this study, we aimed to understand family physicians’ experiences of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Istanbul, focusing on their coping strategies in order to draw lessons for the future management of pandemics. Methods. Twelve community-based physicians working in Istanbul participated in semi-structured interviews between January and May 2021. Purposive sampling was used to ensure a range of physicians’ characteristics. Individual interviews were conducted with each participant on an online platform. Participants were asked 26 open-ended questions. Phenomenological analysis was performed to describe experiences of physicians. Results. The physical conditions of participants’ health centres were insufficient to provide service safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most physicians were uncomfortable about the quality and quantity of personal protective equipment received from the Ministry of Health and took additional measures themselves. Vaccine supply was thought to be insufficient and there were problems with the associated software. Many family physicians highlighted the inadequate communication from the Ministry. Insufficient knowledge about the disease caused anxiety and fear for the physicians and hindered their performance at the beginning of the pandemic. Physicians who live with their families were more anxious than those who did not. Discussion. Despite challenges, routine procedures have mostly been continued, but newly added responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic have had significant impact on physicians’ lives. Background. Healthy patient–physician communication (PPC) affects the effectiveness of the service, increases satisfaction with health services and ensures cooperation with patient. Research has revealed that there are communication problems between physicians and patients, and patients mostly complain about physicians’ communication skills. Objectives. We aim to determine the opinions of family medicine residents about PPC, uncover communication problems in Turkey and also find out if having communication education has an effect on these problems. Material and methods. The data was collected by surveys which were sent to family medicine residents via the Internet, and each resident could answer just one survey. For analyses, we used the IBM SPSS15.0 package program. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. 312 (11.3%) out of 2,765 family medicine residents in Turkey participated in this study. The majority of residents were female (73.1%). More than half of the residents (63.5%) had received training about communication. Most of the residents indicated that they had communication problems with patients or patients’ relatives (88.4%). Most of the residents (73.7%) said “Yes, definitely” to the question “Do you think there is a communication problem between patients and physicians in Turkey?”. No significant difference was found between trained and untrained residents. The most frequent answers to reasons for communication problems were limited time (50.6%), socio-cultural level of the patient (20.5%) and heavy workload of physicians (20.5%). Conclusions. Most residents indicated that they had communication problems with patients or patients’ relatives before, and there is a serious communication problem between patients and physicians in Turkey. Purpose: In this study, we examined the validity and reliability of the Compassion Competence Scale (CCS) by adapting it to Turkish. Desing and Methods: The data of the methodological research were obtained from 180 nursing students in the 3rd and 4th grades of the nursing department of a public university. Findings: CCS Cronbach alpha coefficient was determined as 0.795; 0.758 for the "Communication" subdimension and 0.639 for the "Sensitivity" subdimension and 0.658 for the "Insight" subdimension. Practice Implications: As a result of this research, it was identified that the CCS is a valid and reliable evaluation tool in assessing compassion competence in nursing students. Background: Much research effort is focused on developing an effective vaccine for combatting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Vaccine development itself, however, will not be enough given that a sufficient amount of people will need to be vaccinated for widespread immunity. Vaccine hesitancy is on the rise, varies across countries, and is associated with conspiratorial worldview. Given the rise in COVID-19-related conspiracy theories, we aimed to examine the levels of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and its association with beliefs on the origin of the novel coronavirus in a cross-cultural study. Methods: We conducted an online survey in the UK (N = 1088) and Turkey (N = 3936), and gathered information on participants' willingness to vaccinate for a potential COVID-19 vaccine, beliefs on the origin of the novel coronavirus, and several behavioural and demographic predictors (such as anxiety, risk perception, government satisfaction levels) that influence vaccination and origin beliefs. Results: In all, 31% of the participants in Turkey and 14% in the UK were unsure about getting themselves vaccinated for a COVID-19 vaccine. In both countries, 3% of the participants rejected to be vaccinated. Also, 54% of the participants in Turkey and 63% in the UK believed in the natural origin of the novel coronavirus. Believing in the natural origin significantly increased the odds of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Conclusions: Our results point at a concerning level of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, especially in Turkey, and suggest that wider communication of the scientific consensus on the origin of the novel coronavirus with the public may help future campaigns targeting COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The aim of the study was to determine the correlations between preservice science teachers’ beliefs about the nature of science and their scientific inquiry and communication skills. The study group of the research was composed of 329 pre-service science teachers who are studying at Aydın Adnan Menderes and Muğla Universities of Turkey during the academic year of 2018-2019. The data were obtained by using “Beliefs about the Nature of Science Scale” and “Skills Learning Science Scale”. In addition to descriptive statistics, independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance and stepwise multiple regression analyses were used in the analysis of the data. The result of the study indicated that pre-service science teachers had nearly “Acceptable” beliefs about the nature of science. Their scientific inquiry and communication skills were found to be nearly “High”. In this study, it was concluded that imagination and creativity, assumptions and boundaries of science and observation and inference, explained approximately 12 % of the variance in scientific inquiry skills. In addition, it was concluded that assumptions and boundaries of science, imagination and creativity and observation and inference, explained approximately 13 % of the variance in communication skills. Background: It is stated that the communication and disease experiences of paediatric patients, especially paediatric oncology patients, with healthcare professionals are completely different from those of adults. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the definitions of a good physician and good nurse provided by elementary school-age oncology patients. Research design: In this qualitative research, data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews. The data were evaluated thorough thematic analysis. Participants and research context: Eighteen children hospitalised due to cancer in paediatric oncology and haematology clinics of a university hospital in Turkey. Ethical considerations: Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Institution's Ethics Committee. The objectives of this study were explained to the participants and families, and written consent was obtained from them. Also, participants were assured that necessary measures would be taken to protect their anonymity and confidentiality. Findings: The definitions of children were based on five main themes: interpersonal relationships, virtues, professional responsibility, security and individual characteristics. Conclusion: Children conveyed important messages to health professionals. They emphasised that a good physician and good nurse should communicate well, not only with themselves but also with their family. In addition, children were sensitive about health professionals who played with them and actively participated in the treatment by informing them about the disease. Meeting the expectations of children can be possible by improving the communication skills of physicians and nurses and by adding games and activities to the treatment and care plan. The purpose of the current study is to determine pre-service primary school teachers' cognitive structure regarding communication, cooperation and decision-making skills, which are among the basic life skills addressed in the Life Sciences curriculum. The study employed qualitative research method. The study group of was composed of 111 pre-service primary school teachers taking the course "Life Sciences Teaching" at the Department of Primary School Teacher Training in a state university located in the Marmara region of Turkey. A word association test prepared to test the skills addressed in the current study was used as the data collection tool. This word association test focused on three of the basic life skills; communication, cooperation and decision-making skills. By examining the words written by the pre-service primary school teachers related to these three skills in a detailed manner, a frequency table showing how many times the concepts were repeated was prepared and on the basis of the cut-off points, concept maps were developed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the pre-service primary school teachers produced a total of 154 concepts in relation to the three skills. When the concepts most frequently produced by the pre-service primary school teachers were examined, it was found that "human" was the concept most frequently produced for the communication skill, "group" was the concept most frequently produced for the cooperation skill and "reaching a conclusion" was the concept most frequently produced for the decision-making skill.
