Short-time traffic flow prediction can not only help urban traffic management to complete the control and induce but also reduce the degree of urban congestion and improve the efficiency of urban operation. At the same time, improving the effect of short-time traffic flow prediction is one of the key points of traffic control and guidance development. Currently, there are many different models for short-term traffic flow prediction, and different prediction models have their different advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we review the current status of research on short-time traffic flow prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network: first, we analyze the research method in this paper; second, we briefly review the research and application effects of common prediction methods in traffic flow prediction; finally, the optimization method based on LSTM and its application effect are summarized and analyzed from the aspect of LSTM network and its combination model. The automatic control of vehicle traffic in large urban networks constitutes one of the most serious challenges to modern societies, with an impact on improving the quality of human life and saving energy and time. Intersections are a special traffic structure of pivotal importance as they accumulate a large number of vehicles that should be served in an optimal manner. Constructing intelligent models that manage to automatically coordinate and steer vehicles through intersections is a key point in the fragmentation of traffic control, offering active solutions through the flexibility of automatically adapting to a variety of traffic conditions. Responding to this call, this work aims to propose an integrated active solution of automatic traffic management. We introduce a multi-agent reinforcement learning framework that effectively models traffic flow at individual unsignalized intersections. It relies on a compact agent definition, a rich information state space, and a learning process characterized not only by depth and quality, but also by substantial degrees of freedom and variability. The resulting driving profiles are further transferred to larger road networks to integrate their individual elements and compose an effective automatic traffic control platform. One of the focal points in the field of intelligent transportation is the intelligent control of traffic signals (TS), aimed at enhancing the efficiency of urban road networks through specific algorithms. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms have become mainstream, yet they suffer from inefficient training sample selection, leading to slow convergence. Additionally, enhancing model robustness is crucial for adapting to diverse traffic conditions. Hence, this paper proposes an enhanced method for traffic signal control (TSC) based on DRL. This approach utilizes dueling network and double q-learning to alleviate the overestimation issue of DRL. Additionally, it introduces a priority sampling mechanism to enhance the utilization efficiency of samples in memory. Moreover, noise parameters are integrated into the neural network model during training to bolster its robustness. By representing high-dimensional real-time traffic information as matrices, and employing a phase-cycled action space to guide the decision-making of intelligent agents. Additionally, utilizing a reward function that closely mirrors real-world scenarios to guide model training. Experimental results demonstrate faster convergence and optimal performance in metrics such as queue length and waiting time. In recent years, the increasing production and sales of automobiles have led to a notable rise in congestion on urban road traffic systems, particularly at ramps and intersections with traffic signals. Intelligent traffic signal control represents an effective means of addressing traffic congestion. Reinforcement learning methods have demonstrated considerable potential for addressing complex traffic signal control problems with multidimensional states and actions. In this research, the team propose Q-learning and Deep Q-Network (DQN) based signal control frameworks that use variable phase sequences and cycle times to adjust the order and the duration of signal phases to obtain a stable traffic signal control strategy. Experiments are simulated using the traffic simulator Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) to test the average speed and the lane occupancy rate of vehicles entering the ramp to evaluate its safety performance and test the vehicle's traveling time to assess its stability. The simulation results show that both reinforcement learning algorithms are able to control cars in dynamic traffic environments with higher average speed and lower lane occupancy rate than the no-control method and that the DQN control model improves the average speed by about 10% and reduces the lane occupancy rate by about 30% compared to the Q-learning control model, providing a higher safety performance. Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) has shown strong advantages in urban multi-intersection traffic signal control, but it also suffers from the problems of non-smooth environment and inter-agent coordination. However, most of the existing research on MARL traffic signal control has focused on designing efficient communication to solve the environment non-smoothness problem, while neglecting the coordination between agents. In order to coordinate among agents, this paper combines MARL and the regional mixed-strategy Nash equilibrium to construct a Deep Convolutional Nash Policy Gradient Traffic Signal Control (DCNPG-TSC) model, which enables agents to perceive the traffic environment in a wider range and achieves effective agent communication and collaboration. Additionally, a Multi-Agent Distributional Nash Policy Gradient (MADNPG) algorithm is proposed in this model, which is the first time the mixed-strategy Nash equilibrium is used for the improvement in the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm traffic signal control strategy to provide the optimal signal phase for each intersection. In addition, the eco-mobility concept is integrated into MARL traffic signal control to reduce pollutant emissions at intersections. Finally, simulation results in synthetic and real-world traffic road networks show that DCNPG-TSC outperforms other state-of-the-art MARL traffic signal control methods in almost all performance metrics, because it can aggregate the information of neighboring agents and optimize the agent's decisions through gaming to find an optimal joint equilibrium strategy for the traffic road network. With the promotion of ChatGPT to the public, Large language models indeed showcase remarkable common sense, reasoning, and planning skills, frequently providing insightful guidance. These capabilities hold significant promise for their application in urban traffic management and control. However, large language models (LLMs) struggle with addressing traffic issues, especially processing numerical data and interacting with simulations, limiting their potential in solving traffic-related challenges. In parallel, specialized traffic foundation models exist but are typically designed for specific tasks with limited input-output interactions. Combining these models with LLMs presents an opportunity to enhance their capacity for tackling complex traffic-related problems and providing insightful suggestions. To bridge this gap, we present TrafficGPT—a fusion of multiple LLMs and traffic foundation models. This integration yields the following key enhancements: 1) empowering LLMs with the capacity to view, analyze, process traffic data, and provide insightful decision support for urban transportation system management; 2) facilitating the intelligent deconstruction of broad and complex tasks and sequential utilization of traffic foundation models for their gradual completion; 3) aiding human decision-making in traffic control through natural language dialogues; and 4) enabling interactive feedback and solicitation of revised outcomes. By seamlessly intertwining large language model and traffic expertise, TrafficGPT not only advances traffic management but also offers a novel approach to leveraging AI capabilities in this domain. Trajectory data from connected vehicles (CVs) provide a continuous and reliable means of obtaining information that can be leveraged to optimize traffic signals. This paper proposes a real‐time traffic signal control method using CV trajectory data as the sole input. The primary goal of the proposed signal control method is to prevent queue spillover, which may significantly decrease the traffic efficiency on urban networks and induce high delays to the travelers. The proposed method formulates the signal control problem via a linear quadratic optimization model, considering the constraints related to the duration and variability of green lights in practical traffic signal control systems. Compared to conventional max‐pressure‐based methods, the optimization model offers enhanced efficiency in handling these constraints, making it highly suitable for real‐life implementation. The proposed method has undergone testing in both simulated environments and real‐world applications. In the simulation experiments, the proposed method has been demonstrated to effectively reduce spillover risks and outperform a conventional max‐pressure‐based approach even when the CV penetration rate is as low as 5%. In the real‐world experiment, the proposed method had been tested in a traffic network around the Beijing Capital International Airport for several months. Urbanization has led to accelerated traffic congestion, posing a significant obstacle to urban development. Traditional traffic signal scheduling methods are often inefficient and cumbersome, resulting in unnecessary waiting times for vehicles and pedestrians, exacerbating the traffic situation. To address this issue, this article proposes a dynamic traffic signal scheduling system based on an improved greedy algorithm. Unlike conventional approaches, we introduce a reward function and a cost model to ensure fair scheduling plans. A constraint function is also established, and the traffic signal scheduling is iterated through the feasible matrix using the greedy algorithm to simplify the decision-making process and enhance solution efficiency. Moreover, an emergency module is integrated to prioritize special emergency vehicles, reducing their response time during emergencies. To validate the effectiveness of our dynamic traffic signal scheduling system, we conducted simulation experiments using the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) traffic simulation suite and the SUMO traffic control interface Traci. The results indicate that our system significantly improves intersection throughput and adapts well to various traffic conditions, effectively resolving urban traffic congestion while ensuring fair scheduling plans. Ensuring the correctness of road network data is critical for navigation, traffic control and urban planning. Errors like missing roads and absent connections can hinder its quality. Trajectory data emerges as a cost-effective source to uncover such errors. Existing methods often analyze the mismatches between trajectories and road networks to identify specific errors. They heavily rely on manually established rules and fail to fully leverage the diverse patterns of trajectories and the underlying road network structure. The article introduces a sequential classification approach to detect diverse road network errors. It starts with partial map matching (PMM) to associate trajectories with a road network, allowing unmatched portions. Context features are subsequently extracted by encoding patterns in the map matching (MM) outputs, raw trajectories and road network. Finally, a bidirectional recurrent neural network (BiRNN) model is trained to identify the network error category for each trajectory point. Experiments were performed on detecting errors in OpenStreetMap (OSM) road network with a real-world trajectory dataset. It demonstrates that the proposed method achieves accuracy over 96%, significantly surpassing four baselines. An ablation study confirms the necessity of considering different types of context features. This paper presents a novel approach to intersection improvement planning utilizing telematics data from connected vehicles to generate performance measures for mobility, safety, and emissions. Congestion, crashes, and emissions are three major issues in urban areas, particularly at intersections, and agencies often struggle to prioritize improvement plans because of a lack of objective data. Traditional infrastructure sensors provide limited information at selected locations, but it is not feasible to deploy them at all intersections. The use of telematics data from connected vehicles provides a high granularity of information on driving events and trajectories that can be used in conjunction with vehicle emission modeling to efficiently generate performance measures for all intersections. In a case study of over 300 intersections in Arlington, Texas, the Pareto front method was used to evaluate and rank intersections based on multiple criteria. Intersections falling on the Pareto front were identified as having at least one outstanding (poor) performance measure and were required to be given priority for improvement. The results were cross-validated with historical crash reports and the judgments of city traffic engineers, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed framework in generating objective and reliable intersection performance measures. This approach has the potential to significantly improve intersection safety, mobility, and environmental impact, and can serve as a valuable decision-support tool for transportation agencies. Since its outbreak in December 2019, COVID-19 has spread rapidly across the world. To slow down the spread of the pandemic, various countries have implemented a series of policies and measures. The transportation system is not only an important carrier for COVID-19, but also a vital means for the prevention and control of the spread of the pandemic. Therefore, most anti-pandemic measures are based on travel restrictions, thereby slowing down the spread of the pandemic. As a result, because of the impact of the pandemic and corresponding control measures, the transportation system has undergone tremendous changes. By analyzing the evolution of the transportation system in response to the influence of COVID-19, it is possible to better understand socioeconomic changes and the changes in residents' daily life. Based on rich license plate recognition data, the characteristics of urban motorized travel under the influence of COVID-19 has been analyzed. According to the processes associated with the control of the pandemic and the resumption of work and production, the analysis period is divided into four stages. The changes in indicators of macroscopic traffic status are analyzed for each stage. The three types of typical motor vehicle groups (i.e., non-localized operating vehicles, taxis, and localized operating vehicles) are characterized by the traffic flow they contribute, the number of vehicles in transit, the average travel intensity, the average daily travel time of a vehicle, the average daily travel distance of a vehicle, and the spatiotemporal distributions of origins and destinations of trips. These data clarify the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of peoples' travel behavior at different stages of the pandemic. The results of data analysis show that COVID-19 has deeply changed the motorized travel behavior of urban residents. In the initial stage of resumption of work and production, the willingness to engage in motorized travel had decreased significantly compared with that in the first stage. This willingness gradually resumed until the third and fourth stages, but still did not fully reach the level before the onset of the pandemic. Specifically, the traffic status during morning and evening peaks has basically recovered, and has even increased beyond the level before the pandemic; however, a certain gap was still found between off-peak hours. There were also significant differences in the extent to which different types of vehicles were affected by the pandemic. Among these, taxis were impacted the most by the pandemic. In the fourth stage (at the end of April), the average daily travel time of a vehicle and the average daily travel distance of a vehicle still decreased by 29.25% and 22.63% compared with the first stage, respectively. The operating time of many taxis was shortened from 22:00 PM to 19:00 PM. The spatiotemporal characteristics of vehicles show that the reduction of flexible travel demand (e.g., shopping, catering, and entertainment) is key to the reduction of the travel demand of the road network. This research provides data support for the implementation of traffic control measures under future grave public health events and enables the formulation of urban traffic policies in the post COVID-19 era. In this study, a traffic queue model is employed to simulate traffic parameters for optimization purposes. The primary objective is to enhance the average queue length, cumulative delay, and cumulative reward for varying numbers of vehicles generated using an innovative approach. The proposed methodology integrates deep Reinforcement Q-Learning techniques implemented through a realistic simulator, Simulation of Urban MObility, based on OpenStreetMap. This simulator is used to balance the flow of traffic by monitoring traffic conditions and adjusting signals (Red/Yellow/Green) accordingly. The research extensively evaluates simulation outcomes across different scenarios involving 50, 100, 500, and 1000 vehicles, with episodes 10, 50 and 100. The results provide valuable insights into training times, simulation durations, and total rewards obtained, indicating improvements in mitigating traffic congestion. The introduction of a traffic control strategy enhances model effectiveness through the utilization of four-layer deep neural network architectures with 400 neurons in hidden layers. However, the study also highlights persistent challenges related to real-time implementation and complexities in state-action-agent relationships. The phenomenon of traffic congestion started in the second half of the twentieth century. This arose because of our society's constant increase in demand for mobility. The excessive traffic of vehicles attempting to use the same infrastructure at the same time is what causes congestion. The consequences are well-known: delays, air pollution, reduced speed, and dissatisfaction (which may lead to risky maneuvers, reducing pedestrian and other driver safety). Our objective is to simulate the change in traffic patterns brought about by app users in residential areas (using navigational tools like Google Maps and Apple Maps), where the majority of navigational tools provide shortcuts that go through residential areas. In addition to discouraging navigation apps from directing drivers through residential areas during peak hours to mitigate pollution levels, by developing an algorithm based on the technology of Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) and implementing it in a simulated environment (VISSIM), we can see the effect of changing the duration of red lights while keeping green lights constant. Overall, this solution can be implemented to change the times of traffic lights without the need for supplies, additional equipment, or warning signs because most cities' traffic lights are already remotely controlled. In addition, this procedure is temporary to provide some freedom and does not adhere to the speed specified for drivers who wish to pass through residential areas outside of rush hour. The optimization and control of traffic signals is very important for logistics transportation. It not only improves the operational efficiency and safety of road traffic, but also conforms to the direction of the intelligent, green, and sustainable development of modern cities. In order to improve the optimization effect of traffic signal control, this paper proposes a traffic signal optimization method based on deep reinforcement learning and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) software for urban traffic scenarios. The intersection training scenario was established using SUMO micro traffic simulation software, and the maximum vehicle queue length and vehicle queue time were selected as performance evaluation indicators. In order to be more relevant to the real environment, the experiment uses Weibull distribution to simulate vehicle generation. Since deep reinforcement learning takes into account both perceptual and decision-making capabilities, this study proposes a traffic signal optimization control model based on the deep reinforcement learning Deep Q Network (DQN) algorithm by considering the realism and complexity of traffic intersections, and first uses the DQN algorithm to train the model in a training scenario. After that, the G-DQN (Grouping-DQN) algorithm is proposed to address the problems that the definition of states in existing studies cannot accurately represent the traffic states and the slow convergence of neural networks. Finally, the performance of the G-DQN algorithm model was compared with the original DQN algorithm model and Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) algorithm model. Traffic lights are crucial for urban traffic management, as they significantly impact congestion reduction and travel safety. Traditional methods relying on hand-crafted rules and operator experience are limited in their ability to adapt to changing traffic environments. To address this challenge, we have been exploring intelligent traffic light control using deep reinforcement learning techniques. However, current approaches often suffer from inadequate training data and unstable training processes, leading to suboptimal performance and real-world consequences. In this study, we propose RELight, a novel random ensemble reinforcement learning-based traffic light control framework. RELight effectively utilizes collected empirical data, ensuring a stable and efficient training process. To evaluate the performance of our proposed framework, we conducted a comprehensive set of experiments on a variety of datasets, including four synthetic datasets and a real traffic dataset collected from surveillance cameras at an intersection in Hangzhou, China. Due to the increasing demand for transportation, road renovation is inevitable, and the emergence of work zones has become the most common problem in traffic control. There are many research results on the impact of work zones on traffic operation, but most of them focus on various capacity theoretical models or traffic flow control strategies and are mostly concentrated in highway work areas and urban road subway construction work areas. The location of these work zones is often unable to be changed and is mostly considered reasonable. At present, there is still a gap in selecting and evaluating the location of the work zone. Therefore, this article studied a bidirectional six-lane intersection in Xi'an and investigated the situation of traffic flow distortion caused by the setting of work zones at the intersection. Two different positions and forms of work zones were designed for evaluation and analysis. Firstly, we used VISSIM (2022 student) to simulate the original and proposed work zone road-occupation schemes and analyzed six indicators. Finally, in order to determine the optimal work zone locations under different traffic situations, we applied the entropy weight method (EWM) to assign weights to multiple indicators, thereby achieving a comprehensive assessment of various schemes. The results showed that the highest improvement level among the six indicators was 50.2%, and different schemes adapted to different traffic situations. However, occupying two lanes of the median opposite the exit lane performed better under high traffic volume. Occupying the median and lanes on both sides of the median is suitable for low traffic volume. Occupying two lanes of the entrance lane and using the opposite lane as the left-turn entrance lane is suitable for situations with high traffic volume in the opposite lane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban traffic congestion is of utmost importance for modern societies due to population and economic growth. Thus, it contributes to environmental problems like increasing greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution. Improved traffic flow in urban networks relies heavily on traffic signal control. Hence, optimizing cycle timing at many intersections is paramount to reducing congestion and increasing sustainability. This paper introduces an alternative to conventional traffic signal control, EcoLight+, which incorporates future noise predictions with the deep dueling Q-network reinforcement Learning algorithm to reduce noise levels, CO 2 emissions, and fuel consumption. An innovative data fusion approach is also proposed to improve our LSTM-based noise prediction model by integrating heterogeneous data from different sources. In recent years, there has been significant development in intelligent technologies for urban traffic control, such as smart city and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. These advancements aim to provide more efficient and convenient services to participants in urban transportation. As the urban traffic control (UTC) system integrates with various networks and physical infrastructure, the potential threats of malicious attacks and breaches pose significant risks to the safety of individuals and their properties. To address this issue, this academic paper focuses on studying the network structure of the UTC system. A signal security game model is constructed based on the concepts of evolutionary game theory (EGT), involving three parties: attackers, upper computers (UC), and traffic signal machines (TSM). The model aims to analyze the evolutionary stability of the strategies chosen by each party, and to explore the relationships between various factors and the strategy choices of the three parties. Furthermore, the stability of equilibrium points in the three-party game system is analyzed using the Liapunov method. The conditions in which UC and TSM, dependent on detection rates and defense costs, choose to abandon defense at pure-strategy equilibrium points were obtained. One of the world's challenges is the amount of traffic on the roads. Waiting for the green light is a major cause of traffic congestion. Low throughput rates and eventual congestion come from many traffic signals that are hard coded, irrespective of the volume of the amount of traffic. Instead of depending on predefined time intervals, it is essential to build a traffic signal control system that can react to changing vehicle densities. Emergency vehicles, like ambulances, must be given priority at the intersection so as not to spend more time at the traffic light. Computer vision techniques can be used to improve road traffic signal control and reduce real-time traffic delays at intersections without the requirement for substantial infrastructure analysis. Long wait times and significant energy consumption are just two of the problems of the current traffic signal control system. To optimal efficiency, the traffic signal's duration must be dynamically changed to account for current traffic volume. To lessen congestion, the approach taken in this research focuses on modifying traffic signal time determined by the density of vehicles at the crossroads. The main purpose of this article is to demonstrate heavy traffic and emergency vehicle prioritization from all directions at the traffic intersection for a speedy passage. Using the Pygame tool, the proposed method in this study, which includes a mechanism for estimating traffic density and prioritization by counting vehicles at a traffic junction, is demonstrated. The vehicle throughput for the adaptive traffic light built using Pygame is compared with the vehicle pass rate for the adaptive traffic light built using Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). The simulation results show that the adaptive traffic light built using Pygame achieves 90% throughput compared to the adaptive traffic light built using SUMO. A Two-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (2D-CNN) is implemented using Tensorflow for vehicle classification. An alternative approach for real-time network-wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained attention is perimeter flow control. Many studies have shown that this method is more efficient than state-of-the-art adaptive signal control strategies for heterogeneously congested urban networks. The basic concept of such an approach is to partition heterogeneous cities into a small number of homogeneous regions (zones) and apply perimeter control to the interregional flows along the boundaries between regions. The transferring flows are controlled at the traffic intersections located at the borders between regions so as to distribute the congestion in an optimal way and minimize the total delay of the system. The focus of current work is the mathematical formulation of the original nonlinear problem in a linear parameter-varying (LPV) form so that optimal control can be applied in a (rolling horizon) model predictive concept. This work presents the mathematical analysis of the optimal control problem as well as the approximations and simplifications that are assumed in order to derive the formulation of a linear optimization problem. Numerical simulation results for the case of a macroscopic environment (plant) are presented in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Results for the closed-loop model predictive control scheme are presented for the nonlinear case, which is used as "benchmark," as well as the linear case. Furthermore, the developed scheme is applied to a large-scale microsimulation of a European city with more than 500 signalized intersections in order to better investigate its applicability to real-life conditions. This study proposes a new approach for measuring field pedestrian waiting delay and developed a new pedestrian waiting delay model for signalized midblock crosswalks under mixed traffic conditions. Eight signalized midblock crosswalks were selected in the southern part of India, and data were collected using videographic technique. Pedestrian characteristics, cycle time, and phase lengths were extracted using frame-by-frame extraction technique with a least count of 0.03 s. In the current study, field pedestrian waiting delay was measured by plotting queue length against cycle time. The proposed approach was validated using the conventional approach for measuring field waiting delay. A new pedestrian waiting delay model was developed for signalized midblock crosswalks under mixed traffic conditions. Two new coefficients, i.e., the coefficient of nonuniform arrival rate (Δ1) and the coefficient of noncompliance behavior (Δ2), were incorporated into the existing Webster delay model. The former is modeled using regression analysis, and the latter is calculated as the proportion of violators. The proposed pedestrian waiting delay model was validated with the field waiting delay. The proposed new approach for measuring field waiting delay had an error of 5% compared with the conventional approach for measuring waiting delay. Hence the proposed approach for measuring pedestrian waiting can replace the conventional method for measuring field waiting delay because the new method minimizes the data extraction time. The proposed pedestrian delay model was found to be accurate in estimating the pedestrian waiting delay at signalized midblock crosswalks. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value of the new pedestrian waiting delay was found to be less than 12%. Congestion on expressways usually occurs during the peak hours of urban traffic flow, mainly in the bottleneck area of expressways with reduced capacity, the congestion leads to vehicle queuing, and the traffic flow forms a "stop and go" wave, resulting in frequent vehicle starts, which further reduces the traffic efficiency in the bottleneck area and forms a vicious circle. Aiming at the congestion in the bottleneck area of expressway during peak hours, based on the simulation of expressway traffic flow using the cellular transmission model, an optimization model of variable speed limit control based on the cellular transmission model is established. First, use python programming to complete the realization of the basic traffic flow simulation function and speed limit control function of the CTM model, and build the simulation model with the Chengdu Riyue Avenue Expressway as an example. Then, the closed-loop control method is used in the simulation model to realize the variable speed limit control of the traffic flow system. Finally, the two evaluation indexes of the total delay time and the total ideal vehicle speed difference are used to evaluate the implementation effect of the optimal control plan of the speed limit control strategy. The results show that the variable speed limit control has an obvious optimization effect on reducing the total delay time (TTD) and the total ideal speed difference (TVD) of the system during congestion: using the variable speed limit control optimization strategy and infinite speed control conditions in comparison, the total delay time has been reduced by 35.8%, and the total ideal speed difference has been reduced by 10.7%. When the traffic density is in the critical state of congestion, the implementation of variable speed limit control on the upstream of the bottleneck area can effectively alleviate the overall congestion of the system. Spatial–temporal prediction is an important part of a great number of applications, such as urban traffic control, urban traffic management, and urban traffic planning. However, real-world spatial–temporal data often have complex patterns, so it is still challenging to predict them accurately. Most existing spatial–temporal prediction models fail to aggregate the spatial features in a suitable neighborhood during fixed spatial dependencies extraction and lack adequately comprehensive time series analysis for intricate temporal dependencies. This paper proposes a novel model named multi-scale spatial–temporal transformer network (MSSTTN) to deal with intricate spatial–temporal patterns. Firstly, we develop an improved graph wavelet neural network, which learns how to pass the spatial graph signals of different frequency scales to adjust the neighborhood of feature aggregation adaptively. Then, we propose decomposing the time series into local trend-cyclical parts of various scales during time series analysis, making the model capture more reliable temporal dependencies. The proposed model has been evaluated on publicly available real-world datasets. Platooning is generally known as a control method for driving a group of connected and automated vehicles in motorway context. Nevertheless, platoon control might also work on urban roads. One possible strategy to increase overall road traffic performance and to reduce congestion in urban traffic networks is to combine platooning with traffic signal control at intersections. The traffic flow can be maximized with coordinated scheduling of traffic signals together with platooning activities, resulting in decreased travel times and fuel consumption. This paper investigates several aspects of this combined control, such as the procedures for coordination and communication between platooning vehicles and traffic signals. Efficient algorithms are suggested to optimize platoon formation and dissolution at junctions and to change traffic signal phases depending on platoon arrival and departure times. In this paper, first we introduce the notions of size, order, and degree of vertices and edges in a soft graph, and we give some examples for a better understanding of these concepts. Then, we define the fundamental concepts of the adjacency matrix of soft graphs, complement of soft graphs, and regularity based on the degree of vertices of soft graphs, and we investigate some related results. Moreover, we introduce the concept of soft multiset and soft multigraph and define the notions of union, intersection, complement, and sum, and then we investigate the relations among them. The real-time vehicular traffic system is an integral part of the urban vehicular traffic system, which provides effective traffic signal control for a large multifaceted traffic network and is a highly challenging distributed control problem. Coordinating vehicular traffic enables the network model to deliver an efficient service flow. Consider that there are four lanes of vehicular traffic in this situation, allowing parallel vehicle movements to occur without causing an accident. In this instance, the vehicular system's control parameters are time and vehicle volume. In this work, vehicular traffic flow is examined, and an algorithm to estimate vehicle waiting time in each direction is estimated. The effectiveness of the proposed vehicle traffic signal distribution control system by comparing the experimental results with a real-time vehicular traffic system is verified. We studied the ability of deep reinforcement learning and self-organizing approaches to adapt to dynamic complex systems, using the applied example of traffic signal control in a simulated urban environment. We highlight the general limitations of deep learning for control in complex systems, even when employing state-of-the-art meta-learning methods, and contrast it with self-organization-based methods. Accordingly, we argue that complex systems are a good and challenging study environment for developing and improving meta-learning approaches. At the same time, we point to the importance of baselines to which meta-learning methods can be compared and present a self-organizing analytic traffic signal control that outperforms state-of-the-art meta-learning in some scenarios. We also show that meta-learning methods outperform classical learning methods in our simulated environment (around 1.5–2× improvement, in most scenarios). Our conclusions are that, in order to develop effective meta-learning methods that are able to adapt to a variety of conditions, it is necessary to test them in demanding, complex settings (such as, for example, urban traffic control) and compare them against established methods. Autonomous vehicles are in the main focus for automotive companies and urban traffic engineers as well. As their penetration rate in traffic becomes more and more pronounced due to improvement in sensor technologies and the corresponding infrastructure, new methods for autonomous vehicle controls become a necessity. For instance, autonomous vehicles can improve the performance of urban traffic and prevent the formation of congestions with the usage of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication based control methods. One of the key area for improvement is centralized intersection control for autonomous vehicles, by which traveling times can be reduced and efficiency of traffic flow can be improved, while safety of passengers can be guaranteed through constraints built in the centralized design. The paper presents the analysis of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) method for the coordination of autonomous vehicles at intersections by comparing it with an offline constraint optimization considering time and energy optimal intervention of vehicles. The analysis has been evaluated in high-fidelity simulation environment CarSim, where the speed trajectories, traveling times and energy consumptions have been compared for the different methods. The simulations show that the proposed time-optimal MPC intersection control method results in similar traveling times of that given by the time-optimal offline constraint optimization, while the energy optimal optimization re-quires significantly more time for the autonomous vehicle to achieve. The transportation control infrastructure serves as the foundation for regional traffic signal control. However, in practice, this infrastructure is often imperfect and complex, characterized by factors such as heterogeneity and uncertainty, which pose significant challenges to existing methods and systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach to coordinated traffic signal control that emphasizes flexibility. To achieve this flexibility, we combine the flexible model of complex networks with robust fuzzy control methods. This approach enables us to overcome the complexity of the transportation control infrastructure and ensure efficient management of traffic signals. Additionally, to ensure long-term operational ease, we develop a regional traffic signal control system using steam computing technology, which provides high scalability and compatibility. Urbanised city transportation simulation needs a wide range of factors to reflect the influence of certain real-life events accurately. The vehicle composition and the timing of the traffic light signal scheduling play an important role in controlling the traffic flow and facilitate road users, particularly in densely populated urban cities. Since road capacity in urban cities changes throughout the day, an optimal traffic light signal duration might be different. Hence, in this paper, the effect of vehicle composition and traffic light phases on traffic flow during peak and off-peak hours in Georgetown, Penang, one of the highly populated cities in Malaysia, is investigated. Through Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), this complex system is simulated by integrating the driver's behaviour into the model using the GIS and Agent-Based Modelling Architecture (GAMA) simulation platform. The result of predicted traffic flow varies significantly depending on the vehicle composition while the duration of the traffic signal timing has little impact on traffic flow during peak hours. However, during off-peak hour, it is suggested that 20 s duration of green light provides the highest flow compared to 30 s and 40 s duration of green light. This concludes that the planning for traffic light phasing should consider multiple factors since the vehicle composition and traffic light timing for an effective traffic flow varies according to the volume of road users. This manuscript presents an Adam optimization-based Deep Reinforcement Learning model for Mixed Traffic Flow control (ADRL-MTF), so as to guide Connected and Autonomous vehicle's (CAV) longitudinal trajectory on a typical urban roadway with signal-controlled intersections. Two improvements are made when compared with prior literatures. First, the common assumptions to simplify the problem solving, such as dividing a vehicle trajectory into several segments with constant acceleration/deceleration, are avoided, to improve the modeling realism. Second, built on the efficient Adam Optimization and Deep Q-Learning, the proposed model avoids the enumeration of states and actions, and is computational efficient and suitable for real time applications. The mixed traffic flow dynamic is firstly formulated as a finite Markov decision process (MDP) model. Due to the discretization of time, space and speed, this MDP model becomes high-dimensional in state, and is very challenging to solve. We then propose a temporal difference-based deep reinforcement learning approach, with ε -greedy for exploration-exploitation balance. Two neural networks are developed to replace the traditional Q function and generate the targets in the Q-learning update. These two neural networks are trained by the Adam optimization algorithm, which extends stochastic gradient descent and considers the second moments of the gradients, and is thus highly computational efficient and has lower memory requirements. The proposed model is shown to reduce fuel consumption by 7.8%, which outperforms a prior benchmark model based on Monte Carlo Tree Search. The rapid global spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is now a reality. China has taken urban traffic control measures to prevent and control the epidemic, but this has prevented the flow of people between cities. This study investigates the mechanism of the impact of urban traffic control measures on the intercity population flow in China using the one-way causal measurement method. The results show that the impact of urban traffic control measures on the intercity flow of the population changes with time. Effective accident detection and traffic flow forecasting are of great importance for quick respond, impact elimination and intelligent control of the traffic flow consisting of autonomous vehicles. This paper proposes a traffic accident detection method for connected and automated transport systems by conducting a grid-based parameter extracting and SVC-based traffic state classification. Allowing for the dynamic spread of traffic flow over time, from upstream to downstream and from accident lanes to other lanes, a spatiotemporal Markov model is established to predict the evolution of traffic flow after accident by introducing the grid as state detection unit and fitting the spatiotemporal evolution with the parameter space mean speed to match the need of both detection accuracy and monitoring scope. Compared with actual accident data, the validation results indicate that the proposed methods present a good performance in accident detection with the accident detection rate as 87.72% and a higher precision rate than both SVM (support vector machine) and ANN (artificial neural network) models in traffic flow prediction. With the active traffic accident identification and dynamic traffic flow prediction, it is beneficial to shorten detection time, reduce possible impacts of traffic accidents and carbon emissions from congestion. The connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) is promised to ease congestion in the future with the rapid development of related technologies in recent years. To explore the characteristics of mixed-traffic flow and the dynamic transmission mechanism, this paper firstly detailed the car-following model of different vehicle types, establishing the fundamental diagram of the mixed-traffic flow through considering the different penetration rates and fleet size of CAV. Secondly, this paper constructed the lane-changing judgment mechanism based on the random utility theory. Finally, the paper proposed a lane-level dynamic cell transmission process, combined with a lane-changing strategy and cell transmission model. Traffic flow prediction is one of the most important tasks of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) for traffic management, and it is also a challenging task affected by many complex factors, such as weather and time. Many cities adopt efficient traffic prediction methods to control traffic congestion. However, most of the existing methods of traffic prediction focus on urban road scenarios, neglecting the complexity of multivariate auxiliary information in highways. Moreover, these methods have difficulty explaining the prediction results based only on the historical traffic flow sequence. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel traffic prediction model, namely Multi-variate and Multi-horizon prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory (MMLSTM). MMLSTM can effectively incorporate auxiliary information, such as weather and time, based on a strategy of multi-horizon time spans to improve the prediction performance. Specifically, we first exploit a multi-horizon bidirectional LSTM model for fusing the multivariate auxiliary information in different time spans. Then, we combine an attention mechanism and multi-layer perceptron to conduct the traffic prediction. Furthermore, we can use the information of multivariate (weather and time) to provide interpretability to manage the model. Reinforcement learning (RL)‐based models have been widely studied for traffic signal control with objectives, such as minimizing vehicle delay and queue length, maximizing vehicle throughput, and improving road safety, through tailored reward designs. Despite the advancements in RL‐based signal control models for car traffic, limited research focused on multimodal traffic (e.g. car, bus, pedestrian). The simplified environment of unimodal traffic restrains these models from applications in real‐world cases. In this paper, the authors propose an RL‐based human‐centric multimodal deep (HMD) traffic signal control method to coordinate multimodal traffic at an intersection, with the objective of minimizing the waiting time per capita for multiple traffic modes by taking consideration of the mode capacity to ensure social equity. The method is validated in the simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) simulation environment using real traffic data. The results show the superior performance of HMD over vehicle‐centric (VC) RL‐based methods and traditional signal control schemes. HMD reduces the waiting time per capita by up to 19.2% and 6.3% compared with the fixed timing and VC RL‐based methods. In addition, the experiment results show that the HMD method assigns a higher priority to public transport over low‐occupancy travel modes in passing through intersections compared with unimodal traffic signal control strategies. Mixed traffic flows are opening up new areas for research and are seen as key drivers in the field of data and services that will make roads safer and more environmentally friendly. Understanding the effects of Connected Vehicles (CVs) and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), as one of the vehicle components of mixed traffic flows, will make it easier to avoid traffic congestion and contribute to the creation of innovative applications and solutions. It is notable that the literature related to the analysis of the impact of mixed traffic flows on traffic signal control in urban areas rarely considers mixed traffic flow containing CVs, CAVs, and Human Driven Vehicles (HDVs). Therefore, this paper provides an overview of the relevant research papers covering the topic of urban Traffic Signal Control (TSC) and mixed traffic flows. Best practices for intersection state estimation and TSC in the case of mixed traffic flows in an urban environment are summarized and possible approaches for utilizing CVs and CAVs as mobile sensors and actuators are discussed. Cooperative control of vehicle trajectories and traffic signal phases is a promising approach to improving the efficiency and safety of transportation systems. This type of traffic flow control refers to the coordination and optimization of vehicle trajectories and traffic signal phases to reduce congestion, travel time, and fuel consumption. In this paper, we propose a cooperative control method that combines a model predictive control algorithm for adaptive traffic signal control and a trajectory construction algorithm. For traffic signal phase selection, the proposed modification of the adaptive traffic signal control algorithm combines the travel time obtained using either the vehicle trajectory or a deep neural network model and stop delays. The vehicle trajectory construction algorithm takes into account the predicted traffic signal phase to achieve cooperative control. To evaluate the method performance, numerical experiments have been conducted for three real-world scenarios in the SUMO simulation package. The experimental results show that the proposed cooperative control method can reduce the average fuel consumption by 1% to 4.2%, the average travel time by 1% to 5.3%, and the average stop delays to 27% for different simulation scenarios compared to the baseline methods. In the modern world, the extremely rapid growth of traffic demand has become a major problem for urban traffic development. Continuous optimization of signal control systems is an important way to relieve traffic pressure in cities. In recent years, with the impressive development of deep reinforcement learning (DRL), some DRL approaches have started to be applied to traffic signal control. Unlike traditional signal control methods, agents trained using DRL approaches continuously receive feedback from the environment to continuously improve the policy. Since current research in the field is more focused on the performance of the agent, data efficiency during training is ignored to some extent. However, in traffic signal control tasks, the cost of trial and error is very expensive. In this paper, we propose a DRL approach based on a traffic inference model. The proposed traffic inference model is based on the future information given based on upstream intersections and data from the environment to continuously learn the changing patterns of the traffic environment in order to make inferences about changes in the traffic environment. In the proposed algorithm, the inference model interacts with the agent instead of the environment. Through comprehensive experiments based on realistic datasets, we demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is superior to other algorithms in terms of its data efficiency and stronger performance. Cooperation between intersections in large-scale road networks is critical in traffic congestion. Currently, most traffic signals cooperate via pre-defined timing phases, which is extremely inefficient in real-time traffic scenarios. Most existing studies on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) traffic signal control have focused on designing efficient communication methods, but have ignored the importance of how agents interact in cooperative communication. To achieve more efficient cooperation among traffic signals and alleviate urban traffic congestion, this study constructs a Graph Cooperation Q-learning Network Traffic Signal Control (GCQN-TSC) model, which is a graph cooperation network with an embedded self-attention mechanism that enables agents to adjust their attention in real time according to the dynamic traffic flow information, perceive the traffic environment quickly and effectively in a larger range, and help agents achieve more effective collaboration. Moreover, the Deep Graph Q-learning (DGQ) algorithm is proposed in this model to optimize the traffic signal control strategy according to the spatio-temporal characteristics of different traffic scenes and provide the optimal signal phase for each intersection. This study also integrates the ecological traffic concept into MARL traffic signal control, which aims to reduce traffic exhaust emissions. Finally, the proposed GCQN-TSC is experimentally validated both in a synthetic traffic grid and a real-world traffic network using the SUMO simulator. The experimental results show that GCQN-TSC outperforms other traffic signal control methods in almost all performance metrics, including average queue length and waiting time, as it can aggregate information acquired from collaborative agents and make network-level signal optimization decisions. In new-tier cities with rapid urbanization, the reorganization of urban spatial functions and the development of road networks have brought novel challenges to traffic congestion control. Urban land use patterns have a significant correlation with urban traffic congestion. However, whether and how land use patterns of cities close to the roads affect road congestion is less to be discussed. This article investigated the relationship between land use patterns close to the urban trunk road network and traffic congestion in new tier cities Xi'an, China. We adopted the DBSCAN algorithm to cluster POIs and use the mixed POI clusters to label the socio-economic functions of roads. We found the spatial heterogeneity of POIs on the trunk road network and identified the impacts of the scales and types of POI on road congestion based on the empirical analysis. Compared to the POIs as origin and destination of the trips, the POIs as stopover points of the trips cause significantly more road congestion. The POIs with bidirectional flows at entrances/exits are more likely to cause road congestion than the POIs with unidirectional flows. Moreover, the POIs with flexible traffic flows increase road congestion, while the POIs with predicted traffic flows have no statistically significant correlation with road congestion.
