This study focuses on analyzing and monitoring urban subsidence, particularly in the city of Palermo, Italy. Land subsidence, induced by natural and human factors, poses threats to infrastructure and urban safety. Remote sensing (RS), specifically synthetic-aperture radar interferometry (In-SAR), is employed due to its ability to detect ground displacements over large areas with great precision. The persistent scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR) technique is utilized to identify stable targets and track millimeter-level surface deformations. This research spans from October 2014 to October 2021, using Sentinel-1 satellite data to capture ground deformation from various angles. The findings are integrated into an accessible web app (ArcGIS) for local authorities that could be used aiding in urban planning and enhancing safety measures. This study's results offer updated deformation maps, serving as an operational tool to support decision-making and community resilience, emphasizing risk awareness and responsible practices. This study highlights that the exponential expansion of urban areas, which does not take into account historical information, can gravely jeopardize both the integrity of urban infrastructure and the well-being of its inhabitants. Health monitoring is important for densely distributed urban infrastructures, particularly in cities undergoing rapid economic progress. Permanent scatterer interferometry (PSI) is an advanced remote sensing observation technique that is commonly used in urban infrastructure monitoring. However, the rapid construction of infrastructures may easily cause a loss of coherence for radar interferometry, inducing a low density of effective permanent scatterer (PS) points, which is the main limitation of PSI. In order to address these problems, a novel time-series synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) process based on the adaptive window homogeneous pixel selection and phase optimization (AWHPSPO) algorithm and thermal expansion linear model (TELM) is proposed. Firstly, for homogeneous point selection, information on both the time-series intensity and deformation phases is considered, which can compensate for the defects of insufficient homogeneous samples and low phase quality in traditional distributed scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DS-InSAR) processing. Secondly, the physical, thermal expansion component, which reflects the material properties of the infrastructures, is introduced into the traditional linear model, which can more rationally reflect the temporal evolution of deformation variation, and the thermal expansion coefficients can be estimated simultaneously with the deformation parameters. In order to verify our proposed algorithm, the Orange Island area in Changsha City, China, was selected as the study area in this experiment. Three years of its historical time-series deformation fields and thermal expansion coefficients were regenerated. With the use of high-resolution TerraSAR-X radar satellite images, a maximum accumulated settlement of 12.3 mm and a minor uplift of 8.2 mm were detected. Crossvalidation with small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) results using Sentinel 1A data proved the reliability of AWHPSPO. Polarimetric decomposition is an effective way to analyze the scattering mechanism of targets in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. However, the analysis of urban areas is frequently a challenge. Most decomposition methods use a rotated dihedral derived via rotation matrix to model the double-bounce scattering mechanism of buildings. However, according to electromagnetic theory, the existing dihedral model is not accurate, especially when the orientation angle of the dihedral is large. Therefore, the double-bounce scattering contribution in urban areas with large orientation angles will be difficult to extract. To address this problem, based on physical optics (PO) and geometric optics (GO), the interaction process of electromagnetic waves and the rotational dihedral is analyzed, and then a modified rotational dihedral model (MRDM) is proposed for the accurate representation of the rotational double-bounce scattering mechanism. Accordingly, MRDM is introduced to a five-component decomposition method (MRDM-5SD) to analyze the scattering components in an urban area. The validity of MRDM-5SD is demonstrated using several data sets. The experimental results show that the power contributions of double-bounce scattering in urban areas with large orientation angles increase by using MRDM-5SD. Applications of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) have increased in the past few decades. The potential of model-based decompositions is coupled with polarimetric information extraction from the POLSAR data for target identification and classification. The coherency matrix $[T]$ with nine independent parameters, and associated with some physical scattering models, serves as input to these decompositions. This paper attempts to assign one such physical scattering model to the real part of $T_{23}$ ($\text {Re}\{{T}_{23}\}$) and develop a new scattering power decomposition model, called as the seven-component scattering decomposition (7SD). Previously developed scattering power models have eliminated $\text {Re}\{T_{23}\}$ , assuming the orientation angle compensation condition, to reduce the number of independent $[T]$ parameters. The proposed 7SD model has been tested on fully polarimetric SAR data sets acquired by the spaceborne Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2/Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (ALOS-2/PALSAR-2) and airborne F-SAR, and the results are compared with the existing scattering power decompositions. The physical scattering model for $\text {Re}\{T_{23}\}$ is derived from a particular configuration of dipoles (referred to as “mixed dipole” configuration), which gives rise to compound scattering. The mixed-dipole scattering occurs in urban areas that are highly oriented to the radar illumination direction as well as in vegetation areas. 7SD also delivers an additional mixed dipole scattering power compared to the previous six-component scattering model. The mixed-dipole scattering model reduces the contribution of volume scattering power in double-bounce predominant areas (such as oriented urban blocks), thereby imparting improved understanding of the polarimetric information contained in the coherency matrix. Mapping urban areas from space is a complex task involving the definition of what should be considered as part of an urban agglomerate beyond the built-up features, thus modelling the transition of a city into the surrounding landscape. In this paper, a new technique to map urban areas using multitemporal synthetic aperture radar data is presented. The proposed methodology exploits innovative RGB composites in combination with self-organizing map (SOM) clustering and object-based image analysis. In particular, the clustered product is used to extract a coarse urban area map, which is then refined using object-based processing. In this phase, Delaunay triangulation and the spatial relationship between the identified urban regions are used to model the urban–rural gradient between a city and the surrounding landscape. The technique has been tested in different scenarios representative of structurally different cities in Italy and Germany. The quality of the obtained products is assessed by comparison with the Urban Atlas of the European Environmental Agency, showing good agreement with the adopted reference data despite their different taxonomies. Building reconstruction using high-resolution tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) point clouds has been very attractive in numerous applications, such as urban planning and dynamic city modeling. However, for side-looking TomoSAR, it is a challenge to reconstruct the obscured backs of buildings using traditional single-bounce scattering-based methods. It comes to our attention that the higher-order scattering points in airborne array TomoSAR point clouds may provide rich information on the backs of buildings. In this paper, the fourfold bounce (FB) scattering model of combined buildings in airborne array TomoSAR is derived, which not only explains the cause of FB scattering but also gives the distribution pattern of FB scattering points. Furthermore, a novel FB scattering-based method for the reconstruction of building backs is proposed. First, a two-step geometric constraint is used to detect the candidate FB scattering points. Subsequently, the FB scattering points are further detected by seed point selection and density estimation in the radar coordinate system. Finally, the backs of buildings can be reconstructed using the footprint inverted from the FB scattering points and the height information of the illuminated facades. To verify the FB scattering model and the effectiveness of the proposed method, the results from the simulated point clouds and the real airborne array TomoSAR point clouds are presented. Compared with the traditional roof point-based methods, the outstanding advantage of the proposed method is that it allows for the high-precision reconstruction of building backs, even in the case of poor roof points. Array interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Array InSAR) has a 3-D resolution capability and solves the layover problem in interferometric SAR (InSAR) by arranging multiple antennas in the cross-orbit direction. Airborne Array InSAR point clouds are obtained from two scans for complete building information in urban areas, resulting in very low overlapping point cloud. The existing methods are difficult to extract the identical features for the registration of Array InSAR point clouds. To this end, a robust registration approach Array InSAR point clouds in urban areas is proposed in this study. The main contribution of this article is raising the theoretically optimal transformation for achieving point cloud registration, considering the constraint from parallel facades of a certain building. Point density estimation is adopted to retain building facade points for initial registration. The facade pairs of a specific building are then matched and divided into two categories by judging whether one contains the concave–convex features or not, for performing rotation rectification and fine shift fixation, respectively. Experimental results of both simulated and real data validate the feasibility and reliability of our approach. For the simulated data, the results reach an average rotation error of about 0.01° and an average translation error of less than 0.8 m. For the real data, two evaluation criteria are designed for the lack of reference data. The results reach an average of 0.4° of the defined angle difference and less 0.8-m distance difference from the source facades center to the normal extension of the target facades. In an era of rapid technological improvements, state-of-the-art methodologies and tools dedicated to protecting and promoting our cultural heritage should be developed and extensively employed in the contemporary built environment and lifestyle. At the same time, sustainability principles underline the importance of the continuous use of historic or vernacular buildings as part of the building stock of our society. Adopting a holistic, integrated, multi-disciplinary strategy can link technological innovation with the conservation and restoration of heritage buildings. This paper presents the ongoing research and results of the application of Machine Learning methods for the remote monitoring of the built environment of the historic cluster in Cypriot cities. Damage mapping using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery has been studied in recent decades to support rapid response to natural disasters. Many researches have been developing coherent and incoherent change detection. However, their performances can vary depending on the types of the damages, the characteristics of the scatterers and the corresponding capability of algorithms. In particular, the coherence-based methods have been used as promising detectors over urban areas where high coherences are observed, but their detection accuracies still remain controversial over the area where low coherences are mainly observed such as the 2018 Hokkaido landslides. In order to understand the characteristics of landslide (damage) detectors for low-coherence areas and find an alternative and complementary method, we designed the coherence difference, coherence normalized difference, log-ratio, intensity correlation difference, and normalized differences of the intensity correlation assuming limited availability of dataset, and also developed multi-temporal algorithms using the coherence, intensity, and intensity correlation. They were tested and evaluated using multiple polygons extracted from aerial photos. We were able to observe that the multi-temporal intensity correlation method has the potential to detect the landslides over the low coherence region and all types of land uses. Urban ground deformation has been widely concerned because of its safety risks and impact on the normal construction of cities. To better characterize the ground deformation, this research develops a hybrid approach that integrates multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) and satellite monitoring to quantitively estimate the impact of driving force factors on urban ground deformation. The small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) method is processed to monitor the urban ground deformation with the help of satellite images. The MGWR model is developed to explore the influencing factors of ground deformation in different geographical locations. Regression analysis is performed to explore the influence of driving factors on ground deformation and deformation velocity. A realistic case in Singapore is investigated to demonstrate the MGWR model and its superiority. The results indicate that: (1) With the help of satellite monitoring images, the MGWR model has excellent fitting performance with a R2 value of 0.747 in predicting ground deformation velocity and that of 0.722 in predicting ground deformation; (2) Water and build are two main driving force factors toward ground deformation velocity, while build, population, and elevation are three main driving force factors on monthly ground deformation; (3) The goodness-of-fit of MGWR model outperforms GWR and OLS models in validation metrics. This MGWR approach provides insights into a better understanding of driving force factors in urban ground deformation, aiding the proactive control plans for mitigating the surface subsidence disaster. Tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) inversion of urban areas is an inherently sparse reconstruction problem and, hence, can be solved using compressive sensing (CS) algorithms. This paper proposes solutions for two notorious problems in this field. First, TomoSAR requires a high number of data sets, which makes the technique expensive. However, it can be shown that the number of acquisitions and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be traded off against each other, because it is asymptotically only the product of the number of acquisitions and SNR that determines the reconstruction quality. We propose to increase SNR by integrating nonlocal (NL) estimation into the inversion and show that a reasonable reconstruction of buildings from only seven interferograms is feasible. Second, CS-based inversion is computationally expensive and therefore, barely suitable for large-scale applications. We introduce a new fast and accurate algorithm for solving the NL L1-L2-minimization problem, central to CS-based reconstruction algorithms. Multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR) is used for many applications in earth observation. Most MT-InSAR methods select scatterers with high coherence throughout the entire time series. However, as time series lengthen, inevitable changes in surface scattering lead to decorrelation, which systematically decreases the number of coherent scatterers. Here, we propose a novel method to detect and process temporary coherent scatterers (TCS) by subsequently analyzing the amplitude and the interferometric phase. Two hypothesis tests are developed for amplitude analysis in order to identify the moments of appearing and/or disappearing coherent scatterers. Based on the amplitude analysis, the parameters of interest are then estimated using the interferometric phase. An optimized adaptive temporal subset approach is proposed to improve the precision of the estimated parameters. If the scatterers are not evenly distributed over the area, a secondary (support) network is designed to improve the spatial point distribution. The main advantage of this method is the reliable extraction of a subset of time series without using any contextual information. Experimental results show that the TCSs significantly increase the number of observations for displacement monitoring and improve the change detection capability in urban construction areas. Remotely sensed flood extents obtained in near real-time can be used for emergency flood incident management and as observations for assimilation into flood forecasting models. High-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors have the potential to detect flood extents in urban areas through clouds during both day- and night-time. This paper considers a method for detecting flooding in urban areas by merging near real-time SAR flood extents with model-derived flood hazard maps. This allows a two-way symbiosis, whereby currently available SAR urban flood extent improves future model flood predictions, while flood hazard maps obtained after the SAR overpasses improve the SAR estimate of urban flood extents. The method estimates urban flooding using SAR backscatter only in rural areas adjacent to urban ones. It was compared to an existing method using SAR returns in both rural and urban areas. The method using SAR solely in rural areas gave an average flood detection accuracy of 94% and a false positive rate of 9% in the urban areas and was more accurate than the existing method. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) can obtain 3D imaging models of observed urban areas and can also discriminate different scatters in an azimuth–range pixel unit. Recently, compressive sensing (CS) has been applied to TomoSAR imaging with the use of very-high-resolution (VHR) SAR images delivered by modern SAR systems, such as TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X. Compared with the traditional Fourier transform and spectrum estimation methods, using sparse information for TomoSAR imaging can obtain super-resolution power and robustness and is only minorly impacted by the sidelobe effect. However, due to the tight control of SAR satellite orbit, the number of acquisitions is usually too low to form a synthetic aperture in the elevation direction, and the baseline distribution of acquisitions is also uneven. In addition, artificial outliers may easily be generated in later TomoSAR processing, leading to a poor mapping product. Focusing on these problems, by synthesizing the opinions of various experts and scholarly works, this paper briefly reviews the research status of sparse TomoSAR imaging. Then, a joint sparse imaging algorithm, based on the building points of interest (POIs) and maximum likelihood estimation, is proposed to reduce the number of acquisitions required and reject the scatterer outliers. Moreover, we adopted the proposed novel workflow in the TerraSAR-X datasets in staring spotlight (ST) work mode. The experiments on simulation data and TerraSAR-X data stacks not only indicated the effectiveness of the proposed approach, but also proved the great potential of producing a high-precision dense point cloud from staring spotlight (ST) data. A new scheme for pixel-based polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) classification of the urban area was proposed. First, the characteristic of urban backscattering was analysed and it was found that the backscattering of buildings is very sensitive to the orientation of buildings. Second, by utilising Euler rotation to the polarimetric coherency matrix, a sequence of data with different rotation angles was simulated. Then a polarimetric statistical feature vector would be extracted from the simulated data. At last, the feature vector together with four components decomposition result would be put into a multiple layer perceptron neural network to get the classification result. Due to incomprehensive and inaccurate scattering modeling, the state-of-the-art polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) model-based target decompositions are incapable of effectively depicting the scattering mechanism of obliquely oriented urban areas. In this paper, a seven-component model-based decomposition scheme is proposed by constructing several sophisticated scattering models. First, an eigenvalue-based obliquely-oriented dihedral scattering model is presented to reasonably distribute the co-polarization and cross-polarization scattering powers in obliquely oriented urban areas, thus accurately characterizing the urban scattering. Second, the ±45° oriented dipole and ±45° quarter-wave reflector scattering models are incorporated for the purpose of accounting for the real and imaginary components of the T 13 element in the coherency matrix so as to fully utilize polarimetric information. Finally, according to their mathematical forms, several strategies for model parameter solutions are designed, and the seven-component decomposition is fulfilled. Experimental results conducted on different PolSAR data demonstrate that the proposed method considerably improves the PolSAR scattering interpretation in a more physical manner compared to other existing model-based decomposition, which can be applied for urban area detection, classification, and other urban planning applications. The filtering of multi-pass synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) stack data is a necessary preprocessing step utilized to improve the accuracy of the object-based three-dimensional information inversion in urban area. InSAR stack data is composed of multi-temporal homogeneous data, which is regarded as a third-order tensor. The InSAR tensor can be filtered by data fusion, i.e., tensor decomposition, and these filters keep balance in the noise elimination and the fringe details preservation, especially with abrupt fringe change, e.g., the edge of urban structures. However, tensor decomposition based on batch processing cannot deal with few newly acquired interferograms filtering directly. The filtering of dynamic InSAR tensor is the inevitable challenge when processing InSAR stack data, where dynamic InSAR tensor denotes the size of InSAR tensor increases continuously due to the acquisition of new interferograms. Therefore, based on the online CANDECAMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition, we propose an online filter to fuse data and process the dynamic InSAR tensor, named OLCP-InSAR, which performs well especially for the urban area. In this method, CP rank is utilized to measure the tensor sparsity, which can maintain the structural features of the InSAR tensor. Additionally, CP rank estimation is applied as an important step to improve the robustness of Online CP decomposition - InSAR(OLCP-InSAR). Importing CP rank and outlier's position as prior information, the filter fuses the noisy interferograms and decomposes the InSAR tensor to acquire the low rank information, i.e., filtered result. Moreover, this method can not only operate on tensor model, but also efficiently filter the new acquired interferogram as matrix model with the assistance of chosen low rank information. Compared with other tensor-based filters, e.g., high order robust principal component analysis (HoRPCA) and Kronecker-basis-representation multi-pass SAR interferometry (KBR-InSAR), and the widespread traditional filters operating on a single interferometric pair, e.g., Goldstein, non-local synthetic aperture radar (NL-SAR), non-local InSAR (NL-InSAR), and InSAR nonlocal block-matching 3-D (InSAR-BM3D), the effectiveness and robustness of OLCP-InSAR are proved in simulated and real InSAR stack data. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) is a useful tool for retrieving the three-dimensional structure of buildings in urban areas, especially for datasets with a high spatial resolution. However, among the previous TomoSAR estimators, some cannot retrieve the 3-D structure of objects with a high elevation resolution, some cannot maintain the spatial resolution, and some require the selection of a hyperparameter. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a new nonparametric iterative adaptive approach with a model selection tool based on the Bayesian information criterion (IAA-BIC) for the application of TomoSAR in urban areas. IAA-BIC employs weighted least squares to acquire a high elevation resolution and works well for both distributed and coherent scatterers, even with single-look. Concurrently, IAA-BIC does not require the user to make any difficult selection regarding a hyperparameter. The proposed IAA-BIC estimator was tested in simulated experiments, and the results confirmed the advantages of the IAA-BIC estimator. Moreover, the three-dimensional structure of the Hubei Science and Technology Venture building in Wuhan, China, was retrieved through the IAA-BIC method with nine very high spatial resolution TerraSAR-X images. The height estimation accuracy for this building was about 1% and 4% relative to its real height for single-look and multi-look, respectively. In addition, a comparison between the IAA-BIC estimator and some of the typical existing TomoSAR estimators (Capon, MUSIC, and compressed sensing (CS)) was also carried out. The results indicate that the IAA-BIC estimator obtains a better resolution for coherent sources than Capon and MUSIC; notably, the IAA-BIC estimator obtains a similar performance to CS, but in less computation time.
