Background: Concerns are prevalent about preterm infant long-term growth regarding plotting low on growth charts at discharge, stunting, underweight, high body fat and subsequent cardiometabolic morbidities., Objectives: To examine (a) longitudinal growth patterns of extremely and very preterm infants to 3 years corrected age (CA) (outcome), categorised by their birthweight for gestational age: small, appropriate and large for gestational age (SGA, AGA and LGA, respectively) (exposure); and (b) the ability of growth faltering (<-2 z-scores) to predict suboptimal cognitive scores at 3 years CA., Methods: Post-discharge head, length, weight and weight-4-length growth patterns of the PreM Growth cohort study infants born <30 weeks and < 1500 g, who had dietitian and multi-disciplinary support before and after discharge, were plotted against the World Health Organization growth standard. Infants with brain injuries, necrotising enterocolitis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia were excluded., Results: Of the included 405 infants, the proportions of infants with anthropometric measures > - 2 z-scores improved with age. The highest proportions <-2 z-scores for length (24.2%) and weight (24.0%) were at 36 gestational weeks. The proportion with small heads was low by 0 months CA (1.8%). By 3 years CA, only a few children plotted lower than -2 z-scores for length, weight-4-length and weight (<6%). After zero months CA, high weight-4-length and body mass index > + 2 z-scores were rare (2.1% at 3 years CA). Those born SGA had higher proportions with shorter heights (16.7% vs. 5.2%) and lower weights (27.8% vs. 3.5%) at 3 years CA compared to those born AGA. The ability of growth faltering to predict cognitive scores was limited (AUROC 0.42, 95% CI 0.39, 0.45 to 0.52, 95% CI 0.41, 0.63)., Conclusions: Although children born <30 weeks gestation without major neonatal morbidities plot low on growth charts at 36 weeks CA most catch up to growth chart curves by 3 years CA., (© 2024 The Authors. Neonatal clinicians utilize prefeeding interventions with premature infants to promote a natural process of oral-sensory development, hoping to prepare the infant for future oral feeding. Prefeeding interventions require a holistic approach, ensuring infants are actively involved in learning. Therapists can achieve this by prioritizing the development of intentionality, which is the conscious pursuit of action driven by motivation. The authors present a conceptual model of six neonatal behavioral states of learning called the "Neonatal Intentional Capacities." This model illustrates how purposeful actions evolve into extended learning sequences and helps determine how well an infant can participate in learning experiences. The authors will elucidate the dynamic relationship between intentionality and the development of adaptive motor skills of prefeeding. Lastly, this article presents a consolidated and categorized grouping of current evidence-based prefeeding interventions. Background: Health service providers closely monitor the developmental state of toddlers to identify the factors affecting this process because any defect during this period will cause irreversible damage. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship of nutritional behaviors and parent-child interactions with the developmental domains of Iranian toddlers., Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 341 toddlers aged 12-36 months covered by comprehensive health centers in the south of Tehran in 2021-2022. The participants were selected through single-stage cluster sampling. To this end, 16 comprehensive health centers were randomly selected, and then some of the clients from each center were randomly selected as the sample. The required data were collected through the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ), the Child-Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS), and a demographics form. They were then analyzed statistically using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS-21, considering a significance level of p < 0.05., Results: The results showed that most participants were normal in all developmental domains (communication, gross motor, fine motor, personal-social, and problem-solving), with a mean developmental delay ranging from 1.8 to 7%. The most serious problem of participants requiring medical referral was related to gross motor (7%) with a mean of 54.35 ± 7.28 followed by communication (6.5%) with a mean of 49.41 ± 9.67. The mean nutritional behavior of participants was 77.9 ± 21.7. A significant relationship was found between the nutritional behaviors of participants and the problem-solving domain of development (p = 0.018). The results also indicated a mean parent-child interaction score of 94.26 ± 12.63. There was a significant relationship between parent-child interactions and the communication area of development (p = 0.04)., Conclusion: Since some areas of toddler development are influenced by children's nutritional behavior and parent-child interactions, it is necessary to train families to identify, monitor, and correct the factors affecting the development of their children. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its far-reaching influence on daily life, constituted a highly stressful experience for many people worldwide, jeopardizing individuals' mental health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. While a growing body of evidence links prenatal maternal stress to biological and developmental alterations in offspring, the specific impact of prenatal exposure to maternal pandemic-related stress (PRS) on infant development remains unclear. A comprehensive literature search was performed in October 2023 according to the PRISMA guidelines, which yielded a total of 28 records. The selected papers investigated a vast range of developmental and biological outcomes in the offspring with large methodological variations. The reviewed studies showed mixed results. Either direct associations between maternal PRS during pregnancy and infant temperament and socio-emotional development, or indirect links, mediated by maternal mental health, emerged in most studies. Furthermore, maternal PRS was associated with epigenetic and brain alterations in the offspring, although studies were limited in number. Sensory integration is increasingly acknowledged as being crucial for the development of cognitive and social abilities. However, its developmental trajectory is still little understood. This systematic review delves into the topic by investigating the literature about the developmental changes from infancy through adolescence of the Temporal Binding Window (TBW) - the epoch of time within which sensory inputs are perceived as simultaneous and therefore integrated. Following comprehensive searches across PubMed, Elsevier, and PsycInfo databases, only experimental, behavioral, English-language, peer-reviewed studies on multisensory temporal processing in 0-17-year-olds have been included. Non-behavioral, non-multisensory, and non-human studies have been excluded as those that did not directly focus on the TBW. The selection process was independently performed by two Authors. The 39 selected studies involved 2859 participants in total. Findings indicate a predisposition towards cross-modal asynchrony sensitivity and a composite, still unclear, developmental trajectory, with atypical development associated to increased asynchrony tolerance. The development of locomotion can be described by its form (i.e., gait) and its function (i.e., mobility). Both aspects of locomotion improve with experience. Traditional treatises on infant locomotion focus on form by describing an orderly progression of postural and locomotor milestones en route to characteristic patterns of crawling and walking gait. We provide a traditional treatment of gait by describing developmental antecedents of and improvements in characteristic gait patterns, but we highlight important misconceptions inherent in the notion of "milestones". Most critically, we argue that the prevailing focus on gait and milestones fails to capture the true essence of locomotion-functional mobility to engage with the world. Thus, we also describe the development of mobility, including the use of mobility aids for support and propulsion. We illustrate how infants find individual solutions for mobility and how the ability to move cascades into other domains of development. Finally, we show how an integration of gait and mobility provides insights into the psychological processes that make locomotion functional. Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness of individualized nutrition training for mothers of children who underwent congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery on their children's growth and development., Methods: The researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial at Çukurova University Medical Faculty Balcalı Hospital in Adana, Turkey, between January 20th, 2021, and June 30th, 2021. They recruited 42 children with CHD and their families. Researchers used a personal information form, growth parameter measurements, and the Ankara Developmental Screening Inventory to assess the children. Participants were randomly divided into three groups. Control group, received standard care. Experimental group 1 (orally fed), received family-centered care and individualized nutrition training focused on age-appropriate food content, preparation methods, and meeting children's caloric needs. Experimental group 2 (orally and nutritionally fed), received the same interventions as group 1. The training programs for the experimental groups included information on strengthening breast milk and additional nutritional nutrition support. The training programs for the experimental groups likely addressed feeding challenges specific to children with CHD., Results: The study found a statistically significant difference in weight gain between the first and third follow-ups within the training group (children who received individualized nutrition education). This suggests that the training may have positively impacted weight gain. Previous work has suggested a different developmental timeline and role of visual experience for the use of spatial and non-spatial features in haptic object recognition. To investigate this conjecture, we used a haptic ambiguous odd-one-out task in which one object needed to be selected as being different from two other objects. The odd-one-out could be selected based on four characteristics: size, shape (spatial), texture, and weight (non-spatial). We tested sighted children from 4 to 12 years of age; congenitally blind, late blind, and adult participants with low vision; and normally sighted adults. Given the protracted developmental time course for spatial perception, we expected a shift from a preference for non-spatial features toward spatial features during typical development. Due to the dominant influence of vision for spatial perception, we expected congenitally blind adults to show a similar preference for non-spatial features as the youngest children. The results confirmed our first hypothesis; the 4-year-olds demonstrated a lower dominance for spatial features for object classification compared with older children and sighted adults. In contrast, our second hypothesis was not confirmed; congenitally blind adults' preferred categorization criteria were indistinguishable from those of sighted controls. The composition of human breast milk is an ideal combination of substances necessary for the healthy development of an infant's body while protecting from pathogens and the balanced development of the microbiota. Its composition is dynamic and changes with the age of the child, meeting their current needs. The study provides a thorough overview of human milk components, such as immunological components, growth factors, hormones, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. Authors focus on capturing the most important aspects of the effects of these substances on a newborn's body, while also looking for specific connections and describing the effects on given systems. Supplementation and the use of ingredients are also discussed. The purpose of this paper is to present the current state of knowledge about the bioactive components of human milk and their impact on the growth, development, and health of the young child.

To determine if the United States reference values of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, version III motor scale are suitable for Surinamese infants, we assessed 151 healthy infants at 3, 12, 24 and 36 months of age. Background: Children's development is multifactorial. Although there have been several studies exploring the association of children's development with maternal, child, and environmental factors, we are unaware of any study that assessed those factors in children whose mothers were enrolled in a social safety net programme in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with disadvantaged children's cognitive, language, and motor development at age 6-16 months in deprived settings of urban Bangladesh and to identify relative importance of these factors of children's development. We also explored if there were any gender differences in child development., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a deprived setting of urban Bangladesh. Bayley III was used for assessing children's cognitive, language, and motor development. Multivariable linear regression model was used to find the factors associated with children's development, and dominance analysis was used to explore the relative importance of the factors., Results: Out of the total 599 mother-child dyads, 303 (50.58%) were girls. The factors associated with children's development were length-for-age Z-score (cognitive: B = 1.21 [95% CI = 0.31, 2.11], P = 0.008; language: 1.67 [0.79, 2.55] P < 0.001; motor: 2.15 [1.01, 3.29] P < 0.001) and home environment (cognitive: 0.58 [0.27, 0.89] P < 0.001; language: 0.59 [0.27, 0.92], P < 0.001; motor: 0.44 [0.09, 0.79] P = 0.013). Girls had higher cognitive (1.90 [0.17, 3.6], P = 0.031) and language (2.53 [0.55, 4.51], P = 0.013) development compared with boys. Families with a higher number of under five children within the households had lower language (-1.57 [-2.78, -0.36], P = 0.011) development. Violence against the mother and the families' food security status were not associated with the children's development. Children's length-for-age Z-score (27%) and home stimulation environment (23%) were the most important factors of cognitive development., Conclusion: Children's nutritional status and home environment are important factors for disadvantaged children's development in deprived urban settings of Bangladesh. Background: Early detection of suspected neurodevelopmental delay allows for timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention, for which numerous screening tests have been developed. However, most are complex and impractical for health-care workers at the community level. This study aimed to validate the KARVI scale in the neurodevelopment assessment of children under 1 year of age., Methods: We conducted an observational, longitudinal, comparative, inferential, and prospective study. Healthy children without risk factors for developing neurodevelopmental delay from 0 to 12 months of age were evaluated remotely using the Zoom ® application. The Child Development Evaluation Test and the KARVI scale were applied once a month for four consecutive months., Results: Fifty individuals were analyzed, with a predominance of males in 52%. Adequate percentages for a screening test were obtained in the first evaluation with a sensitivity of 70% (confidence interval [CI] 95% 34.75-93.33) and a specificity of 75% (CI 95% 58.8-87.31), and in the fourth evaluation with a sensitivity of 100% (CI 95% 29.4-100) and a specificity of 78.72% (CI 95% 64.34-89.3), being significant in both evaluations (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively)., Conclusions: The KARVI scale has the elements to be an effective screening test for suspected neurodevelopmental delay, but more extensive studies are needed to obtain more reliable results., (Copyright: © 2023 Permanyer.)

Background: Increasingly, health services are adopting short-term consultative therapy models, such as single session therapy, to cope with increased service demands, finite budgets and changing consumer expectations. Within the paediatric sub-specialty of child development and behaviour, allied health clinicians are central to supporting families to understand their children, provide therapeutic interventions and help achieve optimal developmental and health outcomes. This study aimed to describe parents'/caregivers' engagement during advanced allied health consultations utilizing a single session therapy framework for managing neurodevelopmental and behavioural concerns in children., Methods: Between March to June 2021, 14 parents participated in a qualitative study involving focus groups. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to code and interpret the data to understand and explore families' engagement in single session therapy., Results: Three overarching themes relating to parents' engagement during consultations emerged from the data: connection with the clinician, parental attributes and organizational influences. Clinician connection was the prominent construct that enhanced parent attributes and the positive perception of the organization in an ongoing manner. There was a complex interplay between the behavioural and affective components of the clinician, parents and the organization to create mutual presence, valued time, understanding and action., Conclusions: This study demonstrates the importance of clinician connection, parental attributes and organizational influences to enhance engagement in therapeutic consultations. These factors are interrelated and are a complex blend of behaviour and internal states and highly individualized for each family. Cognitive control consists of high-level cognitive processes regulating thoughts and actions during goal-directed behavior and problem-solving. This study analyzes the performance of 4- to 8-year-old children in Stroop-like and ToL tasks using stimuli with different emotional valence. Significant differences were found in the performance in the congruent block of the Stroop-like task, where 5-year-old children presented a higher performance in the neutral condition. Also, a significant difference was only found in the incongruent block (with higher demand for inhibition), which indicates that girls performed better than boys in both task conditions. Variations in the Stroop-like task performance were found in preschoolers but not in older children, especially in girls than in boys. Specifically, these variations were found between age groups with at least two years of difference. No statistically significant differences were found in performance nor planning time in ToL between the age and gender groups in any of the task conditions. Children born to mothers living with HIV may experience greater risk of poor growth and development outcomes than their HIV-unexposed peers. Few studies have examined the relationship between maternal depression and social support with infant growth and development in the context of HIV. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 2,298 pregnant women living with HIV in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, assessing antenatal depression (Hopkins Symptoms Checklist-25) and social support (Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire) at 12-27 weeks of gestation. At one-year age, infant anthropometry and caregiver-reported infant development were assessed. Generalized estimating equations were used to assess mean differences (MD) and relative risks (RR) for growth and developmental outcomes. Symptoms consistent with maternal antenatal depression had 67% prevalence and were associated with infant wasting (RR 2.61; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-6.65; z = 2.02; p = 0.04), but no other growth or developmental outcomes. Greater maternal social support was not associated with infant growth outcomes. Greater affective support was associated with better cognitive (MD 0.18; CI 0.01-0.35; z = 2.14; p = 0.03) and motor (MD 0.16; CI 0.01-0.31; z = 2.04; p = 0.04) development scores. Greater instrumental support was associated with better cognitive (MD 0.26; CI 0.10-0.42; z = 3.15; p < 0.01), motor (MD 0.17; CI 0.02-0.33; z = 2.22; p = 0.03), and overall (MD 0.19; CI 0.03-0.35; z = 2.35; p = 0.02) development scores. Depressive symptoms were associated with greater risk of wasting, while social support was associated with better infant development scores. An alternative to Mahler's separation-individuation model of child development is presented to explain differences in the development and experience of a sense of self in Indian culture and other cultures where the Western sense of individual selfhood is not seen as the goal of maturity and adulthood. In the absence of such a formulation, called here integrative individuation, the familial and relational experience of people from non-Western cultures is often misunderstood and pathologized by clinicians. Features of this non-Western sense of self include looser boundaries, different relational priorities, and greater tolerance regarding personal space. Though these differences have been commented on by scholars, a detailed developmental model has not previously been formulated.

Background: Parents utilize online sources to learn about health information, however few studies have examined where parents look for information about development or play for young children., Aims: Investigate parents' and early intervention (EI) providers' practices and preferences regarding parent education about infant development and play., Study Design: Cross-sectional survey design., Subjects: 112 parents and 138 EI providers participated., Outcome Measures: One survey probed where parents look for information and preferred methods for receiving information about infant development and play. A second survey identified the parent education sources used and perceived quality of sources available by EI providers. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted., Results: 112 parents and 138 EI providers participated. A greater proportion of parents sought information about development than play. Overall, parents used internet searches and preferred websites for education about development and play; however, parents of infants at risk for developmental delay preferred receiving developmental information through home visits or classes. Most EI providers have not asked parents where they look for information. A greater proportion of EI providers agreed existing sources about development, rather than about play, are high quality, but identified the need to develop high-quality sources about both topics., Conclusions: There are a variety of methods that parents access and prefer for education about infant development and play. Women are underrepresented in STEM fields across the world. We investigate a perceptual mechanism that may contribute to this gender disparity beginning in early childhood. We explore how visual information about the gender composition of a group of scientists impacts children's persistence on a STEM task and their evaluations of group members. One hundred sixty-six 4- to 6-year-old children viewed one of four groups of scientists: all-male, all-female, a lone female among all-males, or a lone male among all-females. Whereas children's persistence on a STEM task did not change across conditions, their trait judgments did. Children judged the all-male and all-female group scientists as "hardworking," but judged the lone female scientist as "smart." However, they were as likely to judge the lone male scientist as "smart" as to judge him "hardworking." Similarity of behaviors or attributes is often used to infer social affiliation and prosociality. Does this reflect reasoning using a simple expectation of homophily, or more complex reasoning about shared utility? We addressed this question by examining the inferences children make from similar choices when this similarity does or does not cause competition over a zero-sum resource. Four- to six-year-olds (N = 204) saw two vignettes, each featuring three characters (a target plus two others) choosing between two types of resources. In all stories, each character expressed a preference: one 'other' chose the same resource as the target, while a second 'other' chose the different resource. In one condition there were enough resources for all the characters; in the other condition, one type of resource was limited, with only one available (inducing potential competition between the target and the similar-choice other). Children then judged which of the two 'other' characters was being nicer (prosocial judgment) and which of the two was more preferred by the target (affiliative inference). When resources were limited (vs. unlimited), children were less likely to select the similar other as being nice. Children's initial tendency to report that the target preferred the similar other was also eliminated in the limited resource scenario. These findings show that children's reasoning about similarity is not wholly based on homophily. Instead, by reasoning about shared utility - how each person values the goals of others - children engage in flexible inferences regarding whether others' similar preferences and behaviors have positive or negative social meaning., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Over 250 million infants in low and middle-income countries do not fulfill their neurodevelopment potential. In this study, we assessed the incidence and risk factors for neurodevelopmental delay (NDD) among children born following obstructed labor in Eastern Uganda. Between October 2021 and April 2022, we conducted a cohort study of 155 children (aged 25 to 44 months), born at term and assessed their neurodevelopment using the Malawi Developmental Assessment Tool. We assessed the gross motor, fine motor, language and social domains of neurodevelopment. The incidence of neurodevelopmental delay by 25 to 44 months was 67.7% (105/155) (95% CI: 59.8-75.0). Children belonging to the poorest wealth quintile had 83% higher risk of NDD compared to children belonging to the richest quintile (ARR (Adjusted Risk Ratio): 1.83; 95% CI (Confidence Interval): [1.13, 2.94]). Children fed the recommended meal diversity had 25% lower risk of neurodevelopmental delay compared to children who did not (ARR: 0.75; 95% CI: [0.60, 0.94]). Children who were exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months had 27% lower risk of neurodevelopmental delay compared to children who were not (ARR: 0.73; 95% CI: [0.56, 0.96]). We recommend that infants born following obstructed labor undergo neurodevelopmental delay screening.

Background: The research aimed to determine how socioeconomic factors influence the body structure and health behaviors of children in a suburban commune., Methods: Data from 376 children aged 6.78 to 11.82 years from Jabłonna, Poland, were analyzed. A questionnaire was used to gather information regarding the socioeconomic status and dietary habits of these children, and physical measurements such as height, weight, pelvic width, shoulder width, chest, waist, hip, and arm circumferences, and three skinfolds were taken. Hip index, pelvi-acromial index, Marty's index, BMI (body mass index), WHR (waist-hip ratio), and the sum of three skinfolds were calculated. One-way analysis of variance, Student's t -test, and X 2 test with p < 0.05 were used., Results: The size of the family and the level of education and occupation of the fathers had a significant impact on the body proportions of the children. Children from larger centers with more educated parents were seen to have healthier eating habits and higher levels of physical activity, and their parents were less likely to smoke cigarettes., Conclusions: It was concluded that the development environment of the parents, such as their level of education and profession, play a more important role than the size of birthplace.

Infants demonstrate rapid development across the first years of life, which underlies increased human interactions that promote social-emotional development. In particular, gaze, affect, and object exploration are early indicators of engagement and show rapid changes in the first year of life. However, current understanding on developmental trajectories during infancy often comes from majority white, non-Hispanic/Latino samples. This longitudinal study explored the development of infant gaze, affect, and object exploration across 2-18 months of age in a sample of primarily Latino infants drawn from a pediatric community clinic. Videos of mother-infant play when infants were 2, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months were coded for durations of three types of behaviors: gaze, affect, and object exploration. Additionally, mother-infant play videos when the infant was 24 months of age were coded for joint engagement. Descriptive statistics for the three behavior types were obtained at each timepoint, and repeated measures analysis of covariance investigated the development of behaviors from timepoint to timepoint. Latent growth curve analyses were conducted to analyze developmental trajectories of capacities across 2-18 months, as well as development in relation to joint engagement at 24 months. Results indicate an important development period from 2 to 6 months of infants' life, unique developmental patterns of specific behaviors, and heterogeneity in gaze development in the sample and across ages. Numerical cognition can take place in multiple representational formats, such as Arabic digits (e.g., 1), verbal number words (e.g., "two"), and nonsymbolic (e.g., •••) numerical magnitude. Basic numerical discrimination abilities are key factors underlying the development of arithmetic abilities, acting as an important developmental precursor of adult-level numeracy. While prior research has begun to detail the neural correlates associated with basic numerical discrimination skills in different representational formats, the interactions between functional neural circuits are less understood. A growing body of evidence suggests that the functional networks recruited by number discrimination tasks differ between children and adults, which may provide valuable insights into the development of numerical cognition. To this end, we posed two questions: how do the interactions between functional circuits associated with number processing differ in children and adults? Are differences in functional network connectivity modulated by numerical representational codes? A theoretically motivated 22 ROI analysis indicated significant functional connectivity differences between children and adults across all three codes. Adults demonstrated sparser and more consistent connectivity patterns across codes, indicative of developmental domain-specialization for number processing. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the developmental outcomes of Japanese babies conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART), born at ages 48 and 60 months., Methods: Data were collected from 725 children in a hospital-based cohort study conducted in Japan. The children's level of development was assessed using the Kinder Infant Development Scale, a parent-rated questionnaire that consists of nine developmental domains. We compared the development between children conceived through ART (N = 189) and those conceived naturally (N = 536) by conducting analyses of covariance. For the analyses, we controlled for the effects of maternal age, family income, parental education, and multiple births., Results: At 48 months, no significant difference was found between children conceived through ART and those conceived naturally, except for the development of receptive language (F(1, 718) = 4.869, p = 0.028)), which was found only for boys. The mean developmental age of receptive language was 60.1 for the children conceived through ART and 57.5 for those conceived naturally. Introduction: No research has examined the impact of any physical-artistic-cognitive activity on foetal neurodevelopment. The aim of the study was to investigate the efficacy of a unique prenatal dance activity in pre- and postnatal cognitive and motor development as a complementary health care practice., Methods: 26 clinically uncomplicated primiparas and multiparas with singleton pregnancies and their later born children were examined in this prospective study at the University of Pécs, Hungary. The activity group participated in supervised, 60-min, twice-weekly, moderate-intensity prenatal dance classes for 19.56 ± 3.97 weeks, whereas the control group did not. We determined the developmental ages of their children with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development in both groups at 5 weeks of age and in the activity group at 33 months of age., Results: Prenatal dance activity did not cause any adverse outcomes. Infants in the activity group had significantly higher mean developmental ages than the control group regarding cognitive skills (P < 0.001), receptive (P < 0.001) and expressive communication (P = 0.007), fine (P < 0.001) and gross motor (P = 0.001). As toddlers their mean developmental ages were significantly higher than their mean calendar age regarding cognitive skills (P = 0.001), receptive (P = 0.001) and expressive communication (P = 0.001), fine (P = 0.002) and gross motor (P = 0.001)., Conclusions: Our results confirm the safe implementation of this prenatal dance activity and the more advanced cognitive and motor development of children in the activity group as infants compared to the control group and as toddlers compared to the norm. These results offer a novel approach to dance in pre- and postnatal clinical practice.

Studies on preterm infants usually exclude high-risk neonatal infants with neurological problems. However, it is important to study high-risk preterm infants to better understand later developmental problems. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to compare the cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional development of high-risk preterm (PT) infants with infants born full-term (FT) with no biological vulnerabilities during early development (up to the first 15 months of age). The sample comprised 133 infants (54 born PT and 79 born FT) assessed in independent subsamples at 6-8 and 12-15 months of age, considering the corrected age for prematurity in the PT infants. Infant development (cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional) was evaluated using the Bayley-III Scales. Medical charts were reviewed to obtain the clinical history. A multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of variance tests were performed to examine the differences between groups related to infant developmental indicators, controlling for age and socioeconomic variables. Although the PT infants performed significantly more poorly than their FT counterparts, the scores of the PT group were still within the normal range on all Bayley-III domains (cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional) than their FT counterparts. The findings of the present study provide a better understanding of the developmental prognosis of high-risk PT infants and extend support for preventive intervention programs to improve early childhood development.

Cognitive Tele-Assessment approach (CTA) has been widely used in adults for clinical, research, and screening purposes. In the last decades, it has been considered a useful tool for evaluating child development in both clinical and educational settings and new instruments for CTA in children have been developed. In comparison to In Person Assessment (IPA), CTA can have several advantages, such as increasing accessibility, cutting waiting lists, reducing time and travel costs, and assisting with infection control by minimizing face-to-face contact in times of pandemic. Nevertheless, several issues related to the feasibility and reliability of using CTA to evaluate cognitive development are still open. The present systematic review has a twofold aim: 1. to describe the cognitive functions that are most frequently measured by CTA in children, the procedures used, and the characteristics of the samples investigated; 2. to investigate the agreement between CTA and IPA scores in children.In the present systematic review, 23 studies using CTA in children, with typical or atypical development, have been selected and analyzed. Results support the similarities in performance scores between IPA and CTA and good compliance by children and their families in participating in CTA. Nonetheless, most studies suggest that several methodological precautions must be taken to manage technical and procedural characteristics that may represent challenges for CTA of children. Suggestions for a correct use of CTA, factors affecting the validity of the results and directions for future research are discussed.

Aim: Sleep is essential for infant development. We assessed the prevalence of sleep problems in infants at 6, 12 and 24 months, investigated the relationship between infants' sleep problems and development, and determined to what extent sleep problems at 6 months were related to changes in the developmental course., Methods: Infant sleep problems were measured by a parent-reported sleep questionnaire. The Ages and Stages Questionnaires were used to measure developmental skills in a sample of 1555 infants recruited from 9 well-baby clinics in Norway. ASQ scores were compared between infants with and without sleep problems by using two-sample t-tests. The relationship between infant sleep problems at 6 months and changes in Ages and Stages Questionnaires scores over time was investigated using linear mixed-effects models., Results: The prevalence of infant sleep problems were 14.6% at 6 months, 7.4% at 12 months and 3.3% at 24 months. There was no clear evidence of differences in ASQ or ASQ:SE scores by sleep problems from 6 to 24 months, but communication and problem-solving scores for infants with sleep problems increased faster., Conclusion: Prevalence of sleep problems decreased with age. Objective: To clarify the characteristics of milestone achievement of Japanese infants using data assessed and recorded in real time via a Web-based app by caregivers., Study Design: Between 2014 and 2019, the achievement of developmental milestones of 16 627 Japanese infants were recorded via the mobile app Papatto Ikuji along with pertinent information including sex, birth date, anthropometric measurements, and information on feeding. The milestones consisted of 20 items belonging to 4 domains: personal-social, fine motor-adaptative, language, and gross motor. The distribution of age at milestone achievement was compared with 4 conventional normative data. Subgroup analyses according to sex, season of birth, and feeding methods were performed with restricted mean survival time analysis., Results: Age distributions of milestone achievement were generally similar in the app-based and conventional data. The exception was "Smile responsively," for which the age at achievement seemed higher in the app-based data. Subgroup analyses showed female-dominant sex differences in the achievement of person-social and language milestones. The results also showed seasonality in achievement of gross motor milestones, with earlier achievement in infants born in winter compared with those born in summer., Conclusions: We describe mobile app-based data on developmental milestone achievements that were recorded in real time. The app-based data were generally comparable with conventional normative data, suggesting that its potential to assess the development of children in real time. White matter maturation has been characterized by diffusion tensor (DT) metrics. However, maturational processes and degrees are not fully investigated due to limitations of univariate approaches and limited specificity/sensitivity. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) provides kurtosis tensor (KT) and white matter tract integrity (WMTI) metrics, besides DT metrics. Therefore, we tried to investigate performances of DKI with the multiparametric analysis in characterizing white matter maturation. Developmental changes in metrics were investigated by using tract-based spatial statistics and the region of interest analysis on 50 neonates with postmenstrual age (PMA) from 37.43 to 43.57 weeks. Changes in metrics were combined into various patterns to reveal different maturational processes. Mahalanobis distance based on DT metrics (D M,DT ) and that combing DT and KT metrics (D M,DT-KT ) were computed, separately. Performances of D M,DT-KT and D M,DT were compared in revealing correlations with PMA and the neurobehavioral score. Compared with DT metrics, WMTI metrics demonstrated additional changing patterns. Furthermore, variations of D M,DT-KT across regions were in agreement with the maturational sequence. Additionally, D M,DT-KT demonstrated stronger negative correlations with PMA and the neurobehavioral score in more regions than D M,DT . Exposure to naturally derived estrogen receptor activators, such as the phytoestrogen genistein, can occur at physiologically relevant concentrations in the human diet. Soy-based infant formulas are of particular concern because infants consuming these products have serum genistein levels almost 20 times greater than those seen in vegetarian adults. Comparable exposures in animal studies have adverse physiologic effects. The timing of exposure is particularly concerning because infants undergo a steroid hormone-sensitive period termed "minipuberty" during which estrogenic chemical exposure may alter normal reproductive tissue patterning and function. The delay between genistein exposure and reproductive outcomes poses a unique challenge to collecting epidemiological data. In 2010, the U.S. National Toxicology Program monograph on the safety of the use of soy formula stated that the use of soy-based infant formula posed minimal concern and emphasized a lack of data from human subjects. Since then, several new human and animal studies have advanced our epidemiological and mechanistic understanding of the risks and benefits of phytoestrogen exposure. Here we aim to identify clinically relevant findings regarding phytoestrogen exposure and female reproductive outcomes from the past 10 years, with a focus on the phytoestrogen genistein, and explore the implications of these findings for soy infant formula recommendations. Background: In the last decades, the birth of premature babies has increased, it is important to know the impact of certain variables, especially in the most vulnerable groups., Purpose: To analyse the relationship of gestational age (GA), weight and sex of the children, as well as the educational level and age of the parents with the cognitive, motor and language development of a group of very preterm births, assessed at 36 months., Design and Methods: The research followed a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional design. Children's development was measured using the Bayley-III Scale. Descriptive analysis, bivariate and linear regression models were carried out., Results: Although the cognitive, motor and language development is within average levels, worse results are evidenced in the group of extreme premature, as opposed to the very premature. Boys score lower than girls, with these differences being more pronounced in the motor area. Background: Literature highlighted the home environment as a major factor influencing the overall development of children. However, minimal information is available about the home environment in China and especially in small infants. This survey was conducted to find out the association between the home environment and the early development of infants., Methods: A total of 1850 infants aged 3-11 months were randomly selected during December 2014 to September 2015. Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale (AHEMD-IS) was used to measure the home environment considering the availability of toys, physical space and variety of stimulation. The Age and Stage Questionnaire-Chinese (ASQ-C) was used to measure potential developmental delays among infants. Bivariate logistic regression model was used to test the association between home environment and potential developmental delays., Results: The percentages of infants with insufficient activity space ranged from 25.27% to 30.23%. With the increase of age, the number of toys available to infants was also increasing. However, varieties of stimulation were decreasing. Compared with infants who have sufficient physical space, the risk of problem-solving development delay increased 26.0% (OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56, 0.97). The risk of gross motor delay was 47.0% (OR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.53, 0.99) lower in infants with sufficient variety of stimulation than infants without. Fine-motor toys were associated with all domains in ASQ-C except communication development, while gross motor toys mainly affected fine motor and problem-solving development., Conclusion: Positive associations between home environment and development among 3- to 11-month infants in Shanghai, China, were revealed in the current study. The author explores the unconscious meanings of the physical absence of the three-dimensional world of people and how these play a critical role in children's reactions to restrictions in human contact during the COVID-19 pandemic. When children are deprived of the corporeality of loved ones, the children's continuously emerging and unstable self-and-other arrangements may trap normative feelings of envy, jealousy, hatred, rivalry, love, and idealization. During lockdowns, there is no place where these raw emotions can be tested, so they remain untempered by the real presence of others and by interactivity with them, feeding aggression that is turned back against the child with frightening ferocity. How do children who must reside in such abstinence during a pandemic pull themselves up the ladder of growth when others whom they rely upon to help them discover who they are, are not there? A description of an observation of a young child attending a Zoom classroom is included, with accompanying commentary.

Ambulatory assessment methods used to capture "real-world" microprocesses through self-report or passive data collection are used to assess child and adolescent behavior in context. This chapter begins by introducing the researcher to ambulatory assessment methods and describes these methods for use in child and adolescent developmental and behavioral research. Next, the importance of attention to timing is discussed. We then suggest appropriate analytic methods for putting ambulatory assessment data to best use to answer developmental research questions. We end with comments on the ethics of ambulatory assessment data and some concluding remarks for researchers wanting to use these methods in their own work., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this prospective longitudinal study was to examine the association between Cesarean section (CS) and child development and behavior. The sample consisted of 256 children who were born at term without serious perinatal pathologies. Their development and behavior was assessed at the age of four using Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3), Children's Behavior Questionnaire and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between CS and child outcomes. CS was associated with better scores in the Problem Solving domain of the ASQ in the whole sample. After stratifying by child sex, the positive association between CS and the Problem Solving domain was significant in boys, while no association was found in girls. The study aimed to assess the associations between newborn thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration, a marker of iodine nutrition in early life, and childhood neurodevelopment and growth using data collected from two pregnancy studies, one in a borderline iodine-deficient setting (DHA to Optimize Mother Infant Outcome (DOMInO) Study) and one in an iodine-sufficient setting (Pregnancy Iodine and Neurodevelopment in Kids (PINK) Study). TSH data were obtained from routine newborn screening. Neurodevelopment was assessed at 18 months using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (Bayley-III). Weight, height and head circumference were measured at 18 months. In total, 1467 children were included in the analysis. Comparing the highest with the lowest TSH quartile, the mean differences (MD) in the Bayley-III scores ranged from -2·0 (95 % CI -4·7, 0·7) to -2·2 (95 % CI -5·8, 1·3) points in DOMInO and 1·0 (95 % CI -1·6, 3·6) to 2·0 (95 % CI -0·4, 4·4) points in PINK in the cognitive, language and motor scales; the MD in the anthropometric z scores ranged from -0·01 (95 % CI -0·5, 0·5) to -0·5 (95 % CI -0·9, -0·1) in both studies. A 1 mIU/l increase in TSH was associated with -0·3 (95 % CI -0·9, 0·2) point and 0·2 (95 % CI -0·3, 0·7) point changes in the mean cognitive score in the DOMInO and PINK, respectively. A null association between TSH and growth was also observed in both studies. Longitudinal studies that utilise newborn TSH data and examine neurodevelopmental outcomes at later ages are warranted, as neurodevelopmental assessments in older children are more predictive of later achievement.

The multidimensional structure of spatial ability remains a debated issue. However, the developmental trajectories of spatial skills have yet to be investigated as a source of evidence within this debate. We tested the intrinsic versus extrinsic and static versus dynamic dimensions of the Uttal et al. (2013, Psychol. Bull., 139, 352) typology in relation to spatial development. Participants (N = 184) aged 6-11 completed spatial tasks chosen to measure these spatial dimensions. The results indicated that the developmental trajectories of intrinsic versus extrinsic skills differed significantly. Intrinsic skills improved more between 6 and 8 years, and 7 and 8 years, than extrinsic skills. Extrinsic skills increased more between 8 and 10 years than intrinsic skills. The trajectories of static versus dynamic skills did not differ significantly. The findings support the intrinsic versus extrinsic, but not the static versus dynamic dimension, of the Uttal et al. Objective: Childhood abuse represents one of the most potent risk factors for developing psychopathology, especially in females. Evidence suggests that exposure to early-life adversity may be related to advanced maturation of emotion processing neural circuits. However, it remains unknown whether abuse is related to early circuit maturation and whether maturation patterns depend on the presence of psychopathology., Methods: A multisite sample of 234 girls (ages 8-18 years) completed clinical assessment, maltreatment histories, and high-resolution T 1 -weighted structural MRI. Girls were stratified by abuse history and internalizing disorder diagnosis into typically developing (no abuse/no diagnosis), resilient (abuse/no diagnosis), and susceptible (abuse/current diagnosis) groups. Machine learning models of normative brain development were aggregated in a stacked generalization framework trained to predict chronological age using gray matter volume in whole-brain, emotion, and language circuit parcellations. Brain age gap estimations (BrainAGEs; predicted age minus true chronological age) were calculated as indices of relative circuit maturation., Results: Childhood abuse was related to reduced BrainAGE (delayed maturation) specific to emotion circuits. Delayed emotion circuit BrainAGE was further related to increased hyperarousal symptoms. Childhood physical neglect was associated with increased whole-brain BrainAGE (advanced maturation). Neural contributors to emotion circuit BrainAGE differed in girls with and without an internalizing diagnosis, especially in the lateral prefrontal, parietal, and insular cortices and the hippocampus., Conclusions: Abuse exposure in girls is associated with a delayed structural maturation pattern specific to emotion circuitry, a potentially adaptive mechanism enhancing threat generalization. Physical neglect, on the other hand, is associated with a broader brain-wide pattern of advanced structural maturation. The differential influence of fronto-parietal cortices and the hippocampus on emotion circuit maturity in resilient girls may represent neurodevelopmental markers of reduced psychiatric risk following abuse.

Background: Children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families have a markedly elevated risk for impaired cognitive and social-emotional development. Children in poverty experience have a high risk for developmental delays. Poverty engenders disproportionate exposure to psychological adversity which may contribute to impaired offspring development; however the effect may be mitigated by social support and other aspects of resilience. Our objective was to determine the association between maternal stress, adversity and social support and early infant neurobehavior and child behavior at two and three years., Methods: We conducted a longitudinal mother-infant cohort study nested within a regional home visiting program in Cincinnati, Ohio. Four home study visits were completed to collect measures of maternal stress, adversity and social support and infant and child behavior. A measure of infant neurobehavior ('high-arousal' infant) was derived from the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) at 1 month and externalizing and internalizing symptoms were measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at 24 and 36 months. Linear and logistic regression identified associations between maternal risk/protective factors and infant and child behavioral measures. We used stratification and multiplicative interaction terms to examine potential interactions., Results: We enrolled n = 55 pregnant mothers and follow 53 mother-offspring dyads at 1 month, 40 dyads at 24 months and 27 dyads at 36 months. Maternal adversity and protective factors were not associated with neurobehavior at one month. However, maternal depression and measures of distress in pregnancy were significantly associated with internalizing and externalizing symptoms at 24 and 36 months., Conclusions: This pilot study established the feasibility of conducting longitudinal research within a community intervention program. In addition, although there were no statistically significant associations between maternal psychosocial factors in pregnancy and infant neurobehavior, there were several associations at 24 months, primarily internalizing symptoms, which persisted through 36 months. The self-reference effect (SRE) is the memory enhancement associated with information linked to self. Unlike 4- to 6-year-olds, adults show stronger memory enhancement when self-processing is "evaluative" (eSRE) than when self-processing is "incidental" (iSRE). Here, the developmental change from shallow to rich self-processing was programmatically explored. In Study 1, 6- to 11-year-olds (N = 189) showed an eSRE = iSRE pattern. However, eSRE magnitude was limited by ceiling effects. Avoiding ceiling effects, Study 2 showed a developmentally stable eSRE > iSRE pattern in 8- to 11-year-olds (N = 96; η p 2  = .06). Study 3 used a different paradigm to confirm that 8- to 11-year-olds are capable of evaluative encoding even without concrete self stimuli. However, the evaluative boost for children was smaller than that for adults (N = 104; η p 2  = .06). Background: Although performance-based assessment of early childhood development is preferred, there are a number of limitations to this methodology in low resource settings (LRSs). Hence, clinicians and researchers often rely on caregiver report screening tools. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3 (ASQ) is one of the most widely used caregiver report measures globally. Adequate psychometric properties have been demonstrated in high income settings, especially when used in older children, high- risk children, or those with severe neurodevelopmental delays. However, its utility is more variable within very young children and for use in LRSs., Methods: The reliability and validity of the ASQ was determined for children ages 0-5 years living in rural Guatemala. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed, as well as concurrent and predictive validity. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values related to performance-based developmental assessment (Mullen Scales of Early Learning; MSEL) and growth status (i.e. stunting) were also calculated., Results: Internal consistency reliability for the ASQ was adequate, except when results were limited by small sample size. Test-retest reliability ranged from low to moderate (r = 0.08-0.43; p < 0.05-0.01). However, there was significant variability in mean scores over time across ASQ domain scores. In terms of validity, the ASQ did not discriminate adequately between children who performed within or below age-expectations on performance-based developmental testing or those with and without stunting., Conclusions: The ASQ did not demonstrate adequate psychometric properties in rural Guatemala, consistent with concerns documented in other LRSs. These results indicate that existing caregiver report screening measures of early childhood development should be utilized with caution in LRSs, and alternative methods for assessment or in the development and utilization of caregiver report measures should be considered., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Many adverse situations for parenting and healthy child development can be detected before a child's birth. The aim of this project was to develop and test an instrument to use in prenatal home visits, to improve the identification of adverse situations and care needs during pregnancy. The preSPARK is based on a valid and reliable broad-scope structured interview called SPARK (Structured Problem Analysis of Raising Kids). The preSPARK focuses on 12 topics ranging from aspects of the period before pregnancy to future parents' expectations. The preSPARK was tested in daily practice for feasibility and discriminative capacity. User experience was assessed from the perspective of the professional. In total, 64 home visits using the preSPARK were carried out by 21 nurses. About 24% of the expectant parents needed intensive help or immediate action on one or more topics. The risk assessment showed 29% of the participants were at high risk, 40% at increased risk, and 31% at low risk for future parenting and child developmental problems. The nurses indicated that the preSPARK provides a good structure for home visits and gives insight in interrelated factors. The preSPARK is feasible in daily practice and clarifies risks and care needs of expectant parents.

Objective: To assess the association between dietary diversity and development among children under 24 months in rural Uganda and to establish other factors that could be associated with development among these children., Design: A secondary data analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled maternal education trial (n 511) was conducted on a sub-sample of 385 children. We used adjusted ORs (AORs) to assess the associations of dietary diversity scores (DDS) and other baseline factors assessed at 6-8 months with child development domains (communication, fine motor, gross motor, personal-social and problem solving) at 20-24 months of age., Setting: Rural areas in Kabale and Kisoro districts of south-western Uganda., Participants: Children under 24 months., Results: After multivariable analysis, DDS at 6-8 months were positively associated with normal fine motor skills development at 20-24 months (AOR = 1·18; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·37; P = 0·02). No significant association was found between DDS and other development domains. Children who were not ill at 6-8 months had higher odds of developing normal communication (AOR = 1·73; 95 % CI 1·08, 2·77) and gross motor (AOR = 1·91; 95 % CI 1·09, 3·36) skills than sick children. Girls had lower odds of developing normal gross motor skills compared with boys (AOR = 0·58; 95 % CI 0·33, 0·98). Maternal/caregiver nutritional education intervention was positively associated with development of gross motor, fine motor and problem-solving skills (P-values < 0·05)., Conclusions: We found an association between child DDS at 6-8 months and improvement in fine motor skills development at 20-24 months. Child illness status, maternal/caregiver nutritional education intervention and sex were other significant baseline predictors of child development at 20-24 months.

Objective: During early childhood, the development of communication skills, such as language and speech perception, relies in part on auditory system maturation. Because auditory behavioral tests engage cognition, mapping auditory maturation in the absence of cognitive influence remains a challenge. Furthermore, longitudinal investigations that capture auditory maturation within and between individuals in this age group are scarce. The goal of this study is to longitudinally measure auditory system maturation in early childhood using an objective approach., Methods: We collected frequency-following responses (FFR) to speech in 175 children, ages 3-8 years, annually for up to five years. The FFR is an objective measure of sound encoding that predominantly reflects auditory midbrain activity. Eliciting FFRs to speech provides rich details of various aspects of sound processing, namely, neural timing, spectral coding, and response stability. We used growth curve modeling to answer three questions: 1) does sound encoding change across childhood? 2) are there individual differences in sound encoding? and 3) are there individual differences in the development of sound encoding?, Results: Subcortical auditory maturation develops linearly from 3-8 years. With age, FFRs became faster, more robust, and more consistent. The hippocampus is necessary for declarative (relational) memory, and the ability to form hippocampal-dependent memories develops through late adolescence. This developmental trajectory of hippocampal-dependent memory could reflect maturation of intrinsic functional brain networks, but resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) of the human hippocampus is not well-characterized for periadolescent children. Measuring hippocampal rs-FC in periadolescence would thus fill a gap, and testing covariance of hippocampal rs-FC with age and memory could inform theories of cognitive development. Here, we studied hippocampal rs-FC in a cross-sectional sample of healthy children (N = 96; 59 F; age 9-15 years) using a seed-based approach, and linked these data with NIH Toolbox measures, the Picture-Sequence Memory Test (PSMT) and the List Sorting Working Memory Test (LSWMT). The PSMT was expected to rely more on hippocampal-dependent memory than the LSWMT. We observed hippocampal rs-FC with an extensive brain network including temporal, parietal, and frontal regions. This pattern was consistent with prior work measuring hippocampal rs-FC in younger and older samples. We also observed novel, regionally specific variation in hippocampal rs-FC with age and hippocampal-dependent memory but not working memory. Evidence consistent with these findings was observed in a second, validation dataset of similar-age healthy children drawn from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopment Cohort. Further, a cross-dataset analysis suggested generalizable properties of hippocampal rs-FC and covariance with age and memory. Our findings connect prior work by describing hippocampal rs-FC and covariance with age and memory in typically developing periadolescent children, and our observations suggest a developmental trajectory for brain networks that support hippocampal-dependent memory., (© 2021 The Authors. Trace elements are vital components for healthy growth, development, and physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between trace element (iron, zinc, copper) deficiencies and picky eating behavior, development level, and physical activity level. This cross-sectional study involved 203 children aged 4-7 years; picky eating behavior, development level, and physical activity level were assessed through questionnaires. Zinc deficiency has the highest prevalence (37.4%); 67.5% of the children were assessed as picky eaters. Children with picky eating behaviors, poor development level, or poor physical activity level have significantly lower zinc levels, and higher prevalence of zinc deficiency. Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated a positive correlation between serum zinc level and development scores ( r = 0.221, p = 0.002) and physical activity scores ( r = 0.469, p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, zinc deficiency independently related to picky eating (OR = 2.124, p = 0.037, CI = 1.042-4.312), developmental level (OR = 0.893, p = 0.022, CI = 0.810-0.984), and physical activity level (OR = 0.785, p < 0.001, CI = 0.700-0.879). In conclusion, the prevalence of zinc deficiency in children aged 4-7 was high, especially in picky eaters. Zinc deficiency was significantly associated with low development and poor physical activity in early childhood.

This review article provides an overview of studies highlighting the importance of sleep in young children's development and summarizes research-based strategies for implementing healthy sleep practices. Sleep problems are common among young children and is one of the most commonly expressed concerns reported by caregivers. Insufficient sleep, poor sleep quality, and irregular sleep schedules may affect children's physical health, cognitive capacity, socioemotional processes, and behavioral functioning, with implications for children's development and well-being. Family context and factors, confounded with cultural variables, play a critical role in children's sleep behavior and practices. This article presents research-based recommendations to enhance knowledge about children's sleep and to promote appropriate practices.

This research article aims to (1) determine the knowledge and experience of early childhood education of Suan Dusit University, and (2) develop and study the effectiveness of learning experience provision models that synergize the knowledge of Suan Dusit University to enhance the proper development of young children according to the 75/75 criteria. Data is obtained from personnel of 87 various agencies of Suan Dusit University, e.g., deans, directors, managers, chairpersons of programs, heads of departments, and 129 students in kindergarten 1, 2, and 3 of La-orutis Demonstration School, Suan Dusit University. The research results consisted of 15 learning experience provision models for young children, such as gravity-powered toys, battery-powered toys, the differences between a toy using force and a toy using a battery, toy caring, and how to play with toys, etc. Every learning experience provision models has a performance rating according to the 75/75 criteria.

Background: Progesterone is widely used in prenatal care. However, long-term effects of prenatal progesterone treatment on child development are unclear., Objectives: To evaluate long-term outcomes in children after prenatal progesterone treatment., Search Strategy: MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to 24 May 2020., Selection Criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) reporting outcomes in children born to women who received progesterone treatment (compared with placebo or another intervention) during any trimester in pregnancy., Data Collection and Analysis: Two authors independently selected and extracted data. We used the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomised trials and Quality In Prognosis Studies., Main Results: Of 388 papers, we included seven articles based on five RCTs, comprising 4222 measurements of children aged 6 months to 8 years. All studies compared progesterone to placebo in second and/or third trimester for the prevention of preterm birth. Meta-analysis (two studies, n = 890 children) showed no difference in neurodevelopment as assessed by the Bayley-III Cognitive Composite score at 2 years between children exposed to progesterone versus placebo (Standardised Mean Difference -0.04, 95% Confidence Interval -0.26 to 0.19), I 2  = 22%. Heterogeneity prohibited additional meta-analyses. Other long-term outcomes showed no differences., Conclusions: Our systematic review comprising a multitude of developmental measurements with a broad age range did not find evidence of benefit or harm in offspring prenatally exposed to progesterone treatment for the prevention of preterm birth.
