Carbon monoxide (CO) delivery molecules are of significant current interest as potential therapeutics, including for anticancer applications. A recent approach toward generating new types of materials-based anticancer agents involves combining the Fenton reactivity of a redox active metal ion with CO delivery. However, small molecule examples of these types of entities have not been systematically studied to evaluate the combined effect on cellular toxicity. Herein we describe a Cu(II) flavonolato complex which produces anticancer effects through a combination of copper-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and light-induced flavonol CO release. Confocal microscopy studies provide evidence of enhanced flavonol uptake in the copper flavonolato system relative to the free flavonol, which leads to an increased amount of CO delivery within cells. In 2014, the Hazelwood mine fire burned for 45 days. Local communities were impacted by smoke and ash, and there were reports of raised carbon monoxide levels. Local news and social media reported residents experiencing numerous physical symptoms of smoke inhalation, including bleeding noses, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Paper masks to filter particulate matter were made available to residents to wear outside. The dust and ash constantly seeped into homes and offices, which required cleaning daily and sometimes multiple times during the day. Smoke was free to move across physical and bodily boundaries while those most vulnerable were hampered by lack of movement: pregnant women, the elderly and children were advised to leave the area. However, this suggestion to 'simply' move ignored the context of a community disproportionately impacted through years of economic decline and societal change. This paper explores the unequal mobilities of smoke and people that arose as a result of this event and draws on concepts of mobility justice (Sheller 2018) and emergency mobilities (Adey 2016) to reflect on the political dimensions of uneven mobility in times of crisis. At the core of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) active site two metal ions together with hydrogen bonding scheme from amino acids orchestrate the interconversion between CO2 and CO. We have designed a molecular catalyst implementing a bimetallic iron complex with an embarked second coordination sphere with multi‐point hydrogen‐bonding interactions. We found that, when immobilized on carbon paper electrode, the dinuclear catalyst enhances up to four fold the heterogeneous CO2 reduction to CO in water with an improved selectivity and stability compared to the mononuclear analogue. Interestingly, quasi‐identical catalytic performances are obtained when one of the two iron centers was replaced by a redox inactive Zn metal, questioning the cooperative action of the two metals. Snapshots of X‐ray structures indicate that the two metalloporphyrin units tethered by a urea group is a good compromise between rigidity and flexibility to accommodate CO2 capture, activation, and reduction. In order to deepen the knowledge of transformer fire dynamics and its fire prevention, an experimental study on autoignition and combustion characteristics of pure insulating transformer paper board (PIPB) and oil-impregnated transformer insulating paper board (OIIPB) were performed. Ignition time, heat release rate (HRR), O, CO and CO concentrations were obtained by a cone calorimeter under different external radiant heat fluxes. The results show that two peaks of HRR occurred during the burning process of PIPB, where three peaks occurred for the OIIPB. The first peak of the OIIPB occurred earlier than that of PIPB, which indicates that OIIPB is more ignitable, but the maximum HRR of PIPB is higher than that of OIIPB, which indicates that the combustion intensity of PIPB is larger. The PIPB has a relatively higher CO and CO yield and O consumption. The results demonstrate that both the tested 3-mm-thick PIPB and OIIPB samples in this study can be considered as thermally thick materials. Autoignition time of OIIPB and PIPB under external heat fluxes could be predicted based an empirical model, and the critical heat fluxes were obtained based on the models and the ignition data. • Shrub-like pt-rh catalysts with different metallic ratios on carbon paper were prepared by laser ablation. • The catalysts displayed higher tolerance to CO and higher catalytic activity towards ethanol oxidation. • Pt-Rh catalysts demonstrated long-term poisoning rates eight times lower than pt. Plasmas techniques are novel routes for the preparation of complex nanostructured materials for catalysis and clean hydrogen energy such as fuel cells. CBPLD technique allows enhanced interaction between the catalyst and the support and improved catalytic properties. Herein, a highly active and durable vertically aligned nanostructured shrub-like bimetallic Pt x Rh 100-x alloys with atomic ratios close to nominal values are grown on carbon paper substrate. The tolerance to CO poisoning and ethanol electrooxidation reactions are studied over these new types of shrub-like bimetallic Pt x Rh 100-x /CP catalysts, demonstrating that such structures effectively facilitate both processes and very low long-term poisoning rates. Such high catalytic activity accounts for two mechanisms: Rh a highly oxophilic transition metal activates water dissociation at lower potentials than Pt (bifunctional mechanism), and the ligand effect where Rh alters the electronic structure of the neighboring Pt suggesting a faster supply in OH ads. Thin-cut smoking tobacco is gaining more and more popularity among consumers of tobacco products. However, this type of product remains poorly understood, including the chemical composition of its smoke. The analysis of the data on the chemical composition of the smoke of smoking tobacco products of various designs is an urgent task from the point of view of assessing the toxic load. It will help further to develop recommendations and suggestions for consumers in the manufacture of these products. The main purpose of this work is to study the effect of the product design (diameter, weight and air permeability of paper) on the chemical composition of smoke and tasting assessment. This article discusses the technological properties of smoking tobacco brands: «Pepe», «Stanley», «Corsar», «Redmont». The chemical composition of tobacco (nicotine, proteins, carbohydrates and pH) was analyzed. The analysis of the composition and breathability of paper for self-rolled cigarettes of the brands «OCB Premium» and «OCB Organic Hemp» used for the manufacture of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco, of different diameters. The influence of the design features of the products (diameter and weight) was studied on the chemical composition of smoke (nicotine, resin, carbon monoxide). Experimentally, the dependence of the chemical composition of smoke on the air permeability of paper and the design features of thin-cut tobacco products has been established: when using paper with low air permeability and with an increase in the diameter and weight of products, the nicotine content increases by 37,55% and resin by 39,54%. The dependence between the nicotine content in tobacco and nicotine in the smoke of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco was revealed.

This article presents an algorithm for modelling an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for power transformer paper conditions in order to estimate the transformer's expected life. The dielectric characteristics, dissolved gasses, and furfural of 108 running transformers were collected, which were divided into 76 training datasets and another 32 testing datasets. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the transformer paper was predicted using the ANFIS model based on using the dielectric characteristics and dissolved gases as input. These inputs were analyzed, and the best combination was selected, whereas CO + CO2, acidity, interfacial tension, and color were correlated with the paper's deterioration condition and were chosen as the input variables. The best combination of input variables and membership function was selected to build the optimal ANFIS model, which was then compared and evaluated. The proposed ANFIS model has 89.07% training accuracy and 85.75% testing accuracy and was applied to a transformer paper insulation assessment and an estimation of the expected life of four Indonesian transformers for which furfural data is unavailable. This proposed algorithm can be used as a furfural alternative for the general assessment of transformer paper conditions and the estimation of expected life and provides a helpful assistance for experts in transformer condition assessment. Purpose: Sensing technology has been extensively researched and used due to its applications in industrial production and daily life. Due to inherent limitations of conventional silicon-based technology, researchers are now-a-days paying more attention to flexible electronics to design low-cost, high-sensitivity devices. This observational and analytical study aims to emphasis on carbon monoxide gas sensor. This review also focuses the challenges faced by flexible devices, offers the most recent research on paper-based gas sensors and pays special focus on various sensing materials and fabrication techniques. Design/methodology/approach: To get the better insight into opportunities for future improvement, a number of research papers based on sensors were studied and realized the need to design carbon monoxide gas sensor. A number of parameters were then gone through to decide the flexibility parameter to be considered for design purposes. This review also focuses on the challenges faced by flexible devices and how they can be overcome. Findings: It has been shown that carbon monoxide gas, being most contaminated gas, needs to be fabricated to sense low concentration at room temperature, considering flexibility as an important parameter. Regarding this parameter, some tests must be done to test whether the structure sustains or degrades after bending. The parameters required to perform bending are also described. Originality/value: Due to inherent limitations of conventional silicon-based technology, now-a-days attention is paid towards flexible electronics to design low-cost, high-sensitivity devices. A number of research articles are provided in the literature concerning gas sensing for different applications using several sensing principles. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) has recently been recognized as the third important physiologically gasotransmitter after carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide. The challenge of accurate measurement of H 2 S at micromolar levels in biological samples represents a major impediment to the investigation of H 2 S. Here a light emitting diode-based photometer was fabricated for the rapid and point of care measurement of sulfide in human serum samples via marriage of gas separation with paper enrichment. Sulfide in the sample was converted into H 2 S by the addition of diluted H 3 PO 4 and liberated from the sample matrix by the bubble of nitrogen gas (N 2 ). The liberated H 2 S was subsequently captured by a methyl green-impregnated paper filter placed at front of the detector. Upon reaction with H 2 S, the paper filter decolorized that was real-time monitored in transmission mode. With 0.2 mL sample, serum sulfide level within the range 10.0–200.0 μmol/L can be accurately measured in less than 2.5 min. The bubble of N 2 into the matrix promotes the mixing of sample with the added acid and helps the liberation of H 2 S. The addition of defoaming agent SE-15 into the matrix effectively prevented the frothing during aeration. The device was applied to the determination of sulfide in human serum and compared satisfactory with that of methylene blue method implemented on a commercial spectrophotometer. The rapid urbanization and industrialization have caused a significant increase in environmental pollution, especially in air quality. This paper introduces an IoT-based environmental monitoring system to address these issues. Using state-of-the-art IoT technology, the system deploys sensors in key locations to continuously collect data on air quality indicators like Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Ozone (O3). The collected data is wirelessly transmitted to a central server for processing and analysis. The system provides real-time and historical data through a user-friendly interface, enabling users to monitor current conditions, identify trends, and identify potential pollution sources. The key features include scalability, allowing for the addition of new sensors, and proactive decision-making through alerts when environmental parameters exceed predefined thresholds. Syngas, a gaseous mixture of CO, H 2 and CO 2 , can be produced by gasification of carbon-containing materials, including organic waste materials or lignocellulosic biomass. The conversion of bio-based syngas to chemicals is foreseen as an important process in circular bioeconomy. Carbon monoxide is also produced as a waste gas in many industrial sectors (e.g., chemical, energy, steel). Often, the purity level of bio-based syngas and waste gases is low and/or the ratios of syngas components are not adequate for chemical conversion (e.g., by Fischer-Tropsch). Microbes are robust catalysts to transform impure syngas into a broad spectrum of products. Fermentation of CO-rich waste gases to ethanol has reached commercial scale (by axenic cultures of Clostridium species), but production of other chemical building blocks is underexplored. Currently, genetic engineering of carboxydotrophic acetogens is applied to increase the portfolio of products from syngas/CO, but the limited energy metabolism of these microbes limits product yields and applications (for example, only products requiring low levels of ATP for synthesis can be produced). An alternative approach is to explore microbial consortia, including open mixed cultures and synthetic co-cultures, to create a metabolic network based on CO conversion that can yield products such as medium-chain carboxylic acids, higher alcohols and other added-value chemicals., (© 2021. Abstract: Infarct size is a major determinant of outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs), which deliver nanomolar concentrations of carbon monoxide to tissues, have been shown to reduce infarct size in rodents. We evaluated efficacy and safety of CORM-A1 to reduce infarct size in a clinically relevant porcine model of AMI. We induced AMI in Yorkshire White pigs by inflating a coronary angioplasty balloon to completely occlude the left anterior descending artery for 60 minutes, followed by deflation of the balloon to mimic reperfusion. Fifteen minutes after balloon occlusion, animals were given an infusion of 4.27 mM CORM-A1 (n = 7) or sodium borate control (n = 6) over 60 minutes. Infarct size, cardiac biomarkers, ejection fraction, and hepatic and renal function were compared amongst the groups. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed to compare inflammation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis between the groups. CORM-A1-treated animals had significant reduction in absolute infarct area (158 ± 16 vs. 510 ± 91 mm2, P < 0.001) and infarct area corrected for area at risk (24.8% ± 2.6% vs. 45.2% ± 4.0%, P < 0.0001). Biochemical markers of myocardial injury also tended to be lower and left ventricular function tended to recover better in the CORM-A1 treated group. There was no evidence of hepatic or renal toxicity with the doses used. The cardioprotective effects of CORM-A1 were associated with a significant reduction in cell proliferation and inflammation. CORM-A1 reduces infarct size and improves left ventricular remodeling and function in a porcine model of reperfused MI by a reduction in inflammation. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic, hazardous gas that has a colorless and odorless nature. On the other hand, CO possesses some physiological roles as a signaling molecule that regulates neurotransmitters in addition to its hazardous effects. Because of the dual nature of CO, there is a need to develop a sensitive, selective, and rapid method for its detection. Herein, we designed and synthesized a turn-on fluorescence probe, 2-(2′-nitrophenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone (NPQ), for the detection of CO. NPQ provided a turn-on fluorescence response to CO and the fluorescence intensity at 500 nm was increased with increasing the concentration of CO. This fluorescence enhancement could be attributed to the conversion of the nitro group of NPQ to an amino group by the reducing ability of CO. The fluorescence assay for CO using NPQ as a reagent was confirmed to have a good linear relationship in the range of 1.0 to 50 µM with an excellent correlation coefficient (r) of 0.997 and good sensitivity down to a limit of detection at 0.73 µM (20 ppb) defined as mean blank+3SD. Finally, we successfully applied NPQ to the preparation of a test paper that can detect CO generated from charcoal combustion.

This study characterizes the combustion of paper and sewage sludge in a pilot-scale fluidized bed. The highest temperature during combustion within the system was found at the surface of the fluidized bed. Paper sludge containing roughly 59.8% water was burned without auxiliary fuel, but auxiliary fuel was required to incinerate the sewage sludge, which contained about 79.3% water. The stability of operation was monitored based on the average pressure and the standard deviation of pressure fluctuations. The average pressure at the surface of the fluidized bed decreased as the sludge feed rate increased. However, the standard deviation of pressure fluctuations increased as the sludge feed rate increased. Finally, carbon monoxide (CO) emissions decreased as oxygen content increased in the flue gas, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were also tied with oxygen content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular catalysts have been shown to have high selectivity for CO2 electrochemical reduction to CO, but with current densities significantly below those obtained with solid‐state materials. By depositing a simple Fe porphyrin mixed with carbon black onto a carbon paper support, it was possible to obtain a catalytic material that could be used in a flow cell for fast and selective conversion of CO2 to CO. At neutral pH (7.3) a current density as high as 83.7 mA cm−2 was obtained with a CO selectivity close to 98 %. In basic solution (pH 14), a current density of 27 mA cm−2 was maintained for 24 h with 99.7 % selectivity for CO at only 50 mV overpotential, leading to a record energy efficiency of 71 %. In addition, a current density for CO production as high as 152 mA cm−2 (>98 % selectivity) was obtained at a low overpotential of 470 mV, outperforming state‐of‐the‐art noble metal based catalysts. Studies that assess the connection between the prevalence of chronic diseases and continuous exposure to air pollution are scarce in developing countries, mainly due to data limitations. Largely overcoming data limitations, this study aimed to investigate the association between the likelihood of reporting a set of chronic diseases (diabetes, cancer, stroke and myocardial infarction, asthma, and hypertension) and continuous exposure to carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), ozone (O 3 ), and coarse particulate matter (PM10). Using the estimated associations, the disease burden and economic costs of continuous exposure to air pollutants were also approximated. A 2011 Health Equity Assessment and Response Tool survey from Tehran, Iran, was used in the main analyses. A sample of 67,049 individuals who had not changed their place of residence for at least 2 years before the survey and reported all relevant socioeconomic information was selected. The individuals were assigned with the average monthly air pollutant levels of the nearest of 16 air quality monitors during the 2 years leading to the survey. Both single- and multi-pollutant analyses were conducted. The country's annual household surveys from 2002 to 2011 were used to calculate the associated economic losses. The single-pollutant analysis showed that a one-unit increase in monthly CO (ppm), NO 2 (ppb), O 3 (ppb), and PM10 (μg/m 3 ) during the 2 years was associated with 751 [confidence interval (CI): 512-990], 18 (CI: 12-24), 46 (CI: -27-120), and 24 (CI: 13-35) more reported chronic diseases in 100,000, respectively. The disease-specific analyses showed that a unit change in average monthly CO was associated with 329, 321, 232, and 129 more reported cases of diabetes, hypertension, stroke and myocardial infarction, and asthma in 100,000, respectively. The measured associations were greater in samples with older individuals. Also, a unit change in average monthly O 3 was associated with 21 (in 100,000) more reported cases of asthma. The multi-pollutant analyses confirmed the results from single-pollutant analyses. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the fundamental impacts of excess air ratio (λ) on emissions and engine performance in spark-ignition engines. It examines pollutants such as oxides of nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide under both lean and ultra-lean conditions. In this paper, mainly the most prominent, up to date, and effective technologies such as ignition strategy, injection strategy, fuel blending, pre-chamber addition, are included. In addition to the effect the excess air ratio has on emissions, engine performance and efficiency are reviewed. This is done through the analysis of the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure, Coefficient of Variation, Fuel Consumption and Indicated Thermal Efficiency. The topics discussed relate to the primary categories listed above, but they are not exclusive to them. In this article, the formation of laser-induced graphene on the two natural polymers, cellulose, and lignin, as precursors was investigated with molecular dynamics simulations and some experiments. These eco-friendly polymers provide significant industrial advantages due to their low cost, biodegradability, and recyclable aspects. It was discovered during the simulation that LIG has numerous defects and a porous structure. Carbon monoxide, H2, and water vapor are gases released by cellulose and lignin substrates. H2O and CO are released when the polymer transforms into an amorphous structure. Later on, as the amorphous structure changes into an ordered graphitic structure, H2 is released continuously. Since cellulose monomer has a higher mass proportion of oxygen (49%) than lignin monomer (29%), it emits more CO. The LIG structure contains many 5- and 7-carbon rings, which cause the structure to have bends and undulations that go out of the plane. In addition, to verify the molecular dynamics simulation results with experimental tests, we used a carbon dioxide laser to transform filter paper, as a cellulose material, and coconut shell, as a lignin material, into graphene. The object of the study is the selective coefficient of variation of dangerous parameters of the gas environment during the ignition of materials. The measure of the sample coefficient of variation of an arbitrary hazardous parameter of the gas environment observed at an arbitrary time interval is substantiated. The representativeness error of the measure of the sampling coefficient of variation, which depends on the value of the measure and the sample size, was determined. The measure allows you to numerically determine its value for an arbitrary observation interval. The difference in the measure at the intervals corresponding to the reliable absence and occurrence of ignition allows to detect the occurrence of ignition of the material. According to the results of laboratory studies, the measures of the sample coefficient of variation for carbon monoxide concentration, smoke density, and temperature of the gas medium in the laboratory chamber at intervals of absence and appearance of ignition of alcohol, paper, wood, and textiles were determined. It was established that the dangerous parameters of the gas environment at the intervals of absence and presence of ignition are characterized by different values of the increase in the measure of the sample coefficient of variation. For example, it is determined that the ignition of alcohol causes the maximum increase in the measure for carbon monoxide concentration from 0.135 to 0.441, for smoke density from 0.629 to 0.805, and for temperature from 0.001 to 0.115. When paper catches fire, the measure for carbon monoxide concentration and temperature increases from 0.0026 to 0.140 and from 0.0019 to 0.05, respectively. When burning wood, the measure for carbon monoxide concentration and temperature increases from 0.0072 to 0.177 and from 0.0067 to 0.016, respectively. The obtained results, provided that the hazardous parameters of the gas environment in the premises are measured and the sample coefficient of variation is calculated in practice, make it possible to use them in the creation of early fire detection systems. With the rapid development of urban road traffic and the increasing number of vehicles, how to alleviate traffic congestion is one of the hot issues that need to be urgently addressed in building smart cities. Therefore, in this paper, a nonlinear multi-objective optimization model of urban intersection signal timing based on a Genetic Algorithm was constructed. Specifically, a typical urban intersection was selected as the research object, and drivers' acceleration habits were taken into account. What'smore, the shortest average delay time, the least average number of stops, and themaximumcapacity of the intersection were regarded as the optimization objectives. The optimization results show that compared with the Webster method when the vehicle speed is 60 km/h and the acceleration is 2.5 m/s², the signal intersection timing scheme based on the proposed Genetic Algorithm multi-objective optimization reduces the intersection signal cycle time by 14.6%, the average vehicle delay time by 12.9%, the capacity by 16.2%, and the average number of vehicles stop by 0.4%. To verify the simulation results, the authors imported the optimized timing scheme into the constructed Simulation of the Urban Mobility model. The experimental results show that the authors optimized timing scheme is superior to Webster's in terms of vehicle average loss time reduction, carbon monoxide emission, particulate matter emission, and vehicle fuel consumption. The object of the study is the coefficients of asymmetry and excess of the selective distribution of hazardous parameters of the gas environment during material fires. The practical importance of the research lies in the use of measures of asymmetry and kurtosis for early detection of fires. The measures of asymmetry and kurtosis for sampling the final size of an arbitrary dangerous parameter of the gas environment are substantiated. The proposed measures make it possible to investigate the peculiarities of the coefficients of asymmetry and kurtosis in relation to the selective distribution of an arbitrary dangerous parameter of the gas environment. At the same time, it becomes possible to numerically determine the degree of difference of the sample distributions of dangerous parameters from the Gaussian, as well as the features of such measures. Experiments were conducted to determine the degree of asymmetry and excess of dangerous parameters of the gas environment in the laboratory chamber at the intervals of the absence and presence of ignition of the test materials. The obtained results indicate that on the intervals of absence and presence of fires, the selective distributions of dangerous parameters of the gas environment differ from the Gaussian distribution. Distributions are complex and individual in nature. Features of measures of asymmetry and kurtosis depend on the type of ignition material. It was established that the maximum values of the modulus of increase in the degree of asymmetry are characteristic for the carbon monoxide concentration (2.939) during the ignition of paper, for the smoke density (3.098) during the ignition of textiles, as well as for the temperature during the ignition of alcohol (7.163) and wood (1.06). Syngas and CO-rich off-gases are key chemical platforms to produce biofuels and bioproducts. From the perspective of optimizing and up-scaling CO co-digestion with organic waste streams, this study aims at assessing and quantifying the inhibitory effects of CO on acidogenic glucose fermentation and aceticlastic methanogenesis. Mesophilic cultures were fed in two sets of batch assays, respectively, with glucose and acetate while being exposed to dissolved CO in equilibrium with partial pressures in the range of 0.25-1.00 atm. Cumulative methane production and microbial monitoring revealed that aceticlastic methanogenic archaea were significantly inhibited (2-20 % of the methane production of CO non-exposed cultures). The acidogenic glucose degrading community was also inhibited by CO, although, thanks to its functional redundancy, shifted its metabolism towards propionate production. Carbon monoxide (CO) has emerged as a potential antitumor agent by inducing the dysfunction of mitochondria and the apoptosis of cancer cells. However, it remains challenging to deliver appropriate amount of CO into tumor to ensure efficient tumor growth suppression with minimum side effects. Herein we developed a CO prodrug-loaded nanomedicine based on the self-assembly of camptothecin (CPT) polyprodrug amphiphiles. The polyprodrug nanoparticles readily dissociate upon exposure to endogenous H 2 O 2 in the tumor, resulting in rapid release of CPT and generation of high-energy intermediate dioxetanedione. The latter can transfer the energy to neighboring CO prodrugs to activate CO production by chemiexcitation, while CPT promotes the generation of H 2 O 2 in tumors, which in turn facilitates cascade CPT and CO release. As a result, the polyprodrug nanoparticles display remarkable tumor suppression in both subcutaneous and orthotopic breast tumor-bearing mice owing to the self-augmented CPT release and CO generation. In addition, no obvious systemic toxicity was observed in mice treated with the metal-free CO prodrug-loaded nanomedicine, suggesting the good biocompatibility of the polyprodrug nanoparticles. Background: While extensive studies have elucidated the relationships between exposure to air pollution and chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disorders and diabetes, the intricate effects on specific kidney diseases, notably primary glomerulonephritis (GN)-an immune-mediated kidney ailment-are less well understood. Considering the escalating incidence of GN and conspicuous lack of investigative focus on its association with air quality, investigation is dedicated to examining the long-term effects of air pollutants on renal function in individuals diagnosed with primary GN., Methods: This retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 1394 primary GN patients who were diagnosed at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Seoul National University Hospital. Utilizing time-varying Cox regression and linear mixed models (LMM), we examined the effect of yearly average air pollution levels on renal function deterioration (RFD) and change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). In this context, RFD is defined as sustained eGFR of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 ., Results: During a mean observation period of 5.1 years, 350 participants developed RFD. Significantly, elevated interquartile range (IQR) levels of air pollutants-including PM 10 (particles ≤10 micrometers, HR 1.389, 95 % CI 1.2-1.606), PM 2.5 (particles ≤2.5 micrometers, HR 1.353, 95 % CI 1.162-1.575), CO (carbon monoxide, HR 1.264, 95 % CI 1.102-1.451), and NO 2 (nitrogen dioxide, HR 1.179, 95 % CI 1.021-1.361)-were significantly associated with an increased risk of RFD, after factoring in demographic and health variables. Background: Anemia is common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), causing significant health issues and social burdens. Exposure to household air pollution from using biomass fuels for cooking and heating has been associated with anemia, but the exposure-response association has not been studied., Objectives: We evaluated the associations between personal exposure to air pollution and both hemoglobin levels and anemia prevalence among pregnant women in a multi-country randomized controlled trial., Methods: We studied 3,163 pregnant women aged 18-35 years with 9-20 weeks of gestation, recruited as part of the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) randomized controlled trial in Guatemala, India, Peru, and Rwanda. We assessed 24-hour personal exposures to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), black carbon (BC), and carbon monoxide (CO), and measured hemoglobin levels at baseline (15 ± 3 weeks gestation). Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the associations of measured pollutants with hemoglobin levels and anemia prevalence, adjusting for confounding., Results: Single-pollutant models showed associations of CO with higher hemoglobin levels and lower anemia prevalence. Bipollutant models involving CO and PM 2.5 also revealed that an interquartile range (IQR) increase in CO concentrations (2.26 ppm) was associated with higher hemoglobin levels [β = 0.04; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.01, 0.07], and a lower odds of anemia prevalence [odds ratios (OR) = 0.90; 95 % CI: 0.83, 0.98]. PM 2.5 was inversely related to hemoglobin and positively associated with anemia, but results were not statistically significant at the 0.05 alpha level. County-specific results showed that 3 of 4 countries showed a similar association between CO and hemoglobin. Fluorescence sensing and imaging techniques are being widely studied for detecting carbon monoxide (CO) in living organisms due to their speed, sensitivity, and ease of use to biological systems. Most fluorescent probes used for this purpose are based on heavy metal ions like Pd, with a few using elements like Ru, Rh, Ir, Os, Tb, and Eu. However, these metals can be expensive and toxic to cells. There is a need for more affordable and biologically safe fluorescent probes for CO detection. Drawing inspiration from the robust affinity exhibited by heme iron toward CO, in this work, a rhodamine derivative called RBF was developed for imaging CO in living cells by binding to Fe(III) and could be used for CO sensing. A Fe(III)-based fluorescent probe for CO imaging in living cells offers advantages of cost effectiveness, low toxicity, and ease of use. The fluorescence detection using the RBF-Fe system showed a direct correlation with increasing levels of CORM-3 (LOD = 146 nM) or the exposure time of CO gas, displaying reduced fluorescence. A CO test paper based on RBF-Fe was created for simple on-site CO detection, where fluorescence would diminish in response to CO exposure, allowing rapid (2 min) visual identification. Imaging of CO in living cells was successfully conducted using the probe system, showing a decrease in fluorescence intensity as CORM-3 concentrations increased, indicating its effectiveness in monitoring CO levels accurately within living cells.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an innate signaling molecule that can regulate immune responses and interact with crucial elements of the circadian clock. Moreover, pharmacologically, CO has been substantiated for its therapeutic advantages in animal models of diverse pathological conditions. Given that an excessive level of CO can be toxic, it is imperative to quantify the necessary amount for therapeutic use accurately. However, estimating gaseous CO is notably challenging. Therefore, novel techniques are essential to quantify CO in therapeutic applications and overcome this obstacle precisely. The classical Myoglobin (Mb) assay technique has been extensively used to determine the amount of CO-release from CO-releasing molecules (CORMs) within therapeutic contexts. Nevertheless, specific challenges arise when applying the Mb assay to evaluate CORMs featuring innovative molecular architectures. Here, we report a fluorinated photo-CORM (CORM-FBS) for the photo-induced CO-release. We employed the 19 F NMR spectroscopy approach to monitor the release of CO as well as quantitative evaluation of CO release. During the last decades, ground-based microwave radiometry has matured to an established remote sensing technique for measuring vertical profiles of a number of gases in the stratosphere and the mesosphere. Microwave radiometry is the only ground- based technique that can provide vertical profiles of gases in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere both day and night, and even during cloudy conditions. Except for microwave instruments placed at high altitude sites, or at sites with dry atmospheric conditions, only molecules with significant emission lines below 150 GHz, such as CO, H2O and O3 can be observed. Vertical profiles of these molecules can give important information about chemistry and dynamics in the middle atmosphere. Today these measurements are performed at relatively few sites, more simple and reliable instrument solutions are required to make the measurement technique more widely spread. This need is today urgent as the number of satellite sensors observing the middle atmosphere is about to decrease drastically. In this study a compact 15 double-sideband frequency-switched radiometer system for simultaneous observations of mesospheric CO at 115.27 GHz and O3 at 110.84 GHz is presented. The radiometer, its calibration scheme and observation method are presented. The retrieval procedure, including compensation of the derent tropospheric attenuation at the two frequencies, and error characterization are also described. The first measure20 ment series from October 2014 until April 2015 taken at the Onsala Space Observatory, OSO, (57 N, 12 E) is analysed. The retrieved vertical profiles are compared with colocated CO and O3 data from the MLS instrument on the Aura satellite. The datasets from the instruments agree well to each other. The main differences are the higher OSO volume mixing ratios of O3 in the upper mesosphere during the winter nights and 25 the higher OSO volume mixing ratios of CO in the mesosphere during the winter. The object of this study is a change in the hazardous parameters of the gas environment when materials are ignited in the premises. The subject is the features of the average bicoherence of the frequencies of the spectra of changes in the hazardous parameters of the gas environment when materials are ignited. The importance of such studies is based on the fact that the examined features can be used for the early detection of fires. The value of the average bicoherence is proposed to be determined for each frequency, taking into account the average value of the cosine argument of the complex bispectrum for a given frequency interval. It was established that the values of the average bicoherence of the spectrum of changes in the temperature of the gaseous medium in the interval of no ignition of the materials, averaged by frequency in the range of 0–2 Hz, lie in the range from ‒0.052 to ‒0.35. At the same time, the frequency-averaged values of mean bicoherence at the ignition interval of materials lie in the range of ‒0.128 to +0.155. Averaged in the frequency range of 0–2 Hz, the value of the mean bicoherence of the spectrum of changes in smoke density in the interval of absence of ignition of materials lies in the range from ‒0.018 to +0.568. In the presence of fires, this value is in the range from –0.244 to +0.23. At the same time, the average value of the average bicoherence of the spectrum of changes in the concentration of carbon monoxide of the gas medium for test materials, averaged in the range from 0 to 2 Hz, ranges from +0.016 to +0.109. In the case of ignition of materials, the average values range from +0.0007 to +0.053, except for ignition of wood (+0.117). In general, the revealed features of the average bicoherence of the frequency components of the spectra of changes in the hazardous parameters of the gas environment indicate the possibility of their use to identify fires and prevent fires. Air‐insulated switchgear plays an important role in distribution network and partial discharge (PD) is one of the common faults in its operation. The method of gas component analysis, which is to detect chemical gas products, is a novel one to discover PD. In order to study the feasibility of the method, the monitoring experiment of characteristic gases, comprising carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3), of metal protrusion PD is carried out. This paper conducts the comparative experiments on three main factors affecting PD: voltage, air humidity and degree of protrusion, as well as studies how they affect the formation of characteristic gases. According to the experimental result, higher applied voltage promotes the formation of characteristic gases in the same conditions. In addition, with the increase of humidity from 40% to 75%, the generation of gases is inhibited. Furthermore, when the needle–plate distance is 30 mm, the gas concentration has almost no change within 6 h, which is different from that of 10 mm. In conclusion, the difference in gases concentration reveals the influence of three main factors on the generation of characteristic gases and provides an analytical basis for PD detection by gas composition analysis. The object of the study is the selective dispersion of dangerous parameters of the gas environment during material fires. The practical importance of research consists in using the difference of sample dispersions of dangerous parameters of the gas environment on the intervals of absence and presence of ignition of materials for detection of ignition. The theoretical substantiation of the method of detecting fires in premises based on sample dispersions of current measurements of an arbitrary dangerous parameter of the gas environment, corresponding to the general populations of reliable absence and presence of fire, has been carried out. The method, at a given level of significance, determines the unbiased uniformly most powerful fire detection rule. This makes it possible to determine how much differences in sample variances are significant with a given level of significance and are caused by ignition or are random factors. Laboratory experiments were conducted to verify the proposed method. It was established that the influence of ignition on the value of the difference in the sample dispersion at the corresponding intervals of monitoring the carbon monoxide concentration, smoke density, and temperature of the gaseous environment of the laboratory chamber is different and depends on the type of ignition material. At the same time, the minimum difference of the sample dispersions is characteristic for observing the smoke density for all the studied materials. However, early detection of ignition of alcohol, paper, wood, and textiles when observing the smoke density is carried out when the threshold is exceeded by 9.01, 5.31, 2.13 and 2.55 times, respectively. It is shown that the method of early detection of fires, which is based on the detection of significant differences in sample dispersions of data from the relevant general populations.
