Background: Efficient monitoring of glucose concentration in the human body necessitates the utilization of electrochemically active sensing materials in nonenzymatic glucose sensors. However, prevailing limitations such as intricate fabrication processes, lower sensitivity, and instability impede their practical application. Herein, ternary Cu-Co-Ni-S sulfides nanoporous network structure was synthesized on carbon fiber paper (CP) by an ultrafast, facile, and controllable technique through on-step cyclic voltammetry, serving as a superior self-supporting catalytic electrode for the high-performance glucose sensor., Results: The direct growth of free-standing Cu-Co-Ni-S on the interconnected three-dimensional (3D) network of CP boosted the active site of the composites, improved ion diffusion kinetics, and significantly promoted the electron transfer rate. The multiple oxidation states and synergistic effects among Co, Ni, Cu, and S further promoted glucose electrooxidation. The well-architected Cu-Co-Ni-S/CP presented exceptional electrocatalytic properties for glucose with satisfied linearity of a broad range from 0.3 to 16,000 μM and high sensitivity of 6829 μA mM - 1 cm - 2 . Furthermore, the novel sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and storage stability, which could successfully evaluate the glucose levels in human serum. Notably, the novel Cu-Co-Ni-S/CP showed favorable biocompatibility, proving its potential for in vivo glucose monitoring., Conclusion: The proposed 3D hierarchical morphology self-supported electrode sensor, which demonstrates appealing analysis behavior for glucose electrooxidation, holds great promise for the next generation of high-performance glucose sensors., (© 2024. In this work, we introduce our recent finding that the carbon fiber paper (CFP) treated by simple air annealing (OCFP) could be used for exceptionally high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensing. The air-annealing process endows the pristine CFP with higher defective edge/plane sites, more oxygen-containing functional groups, higher roughness, and improved wettability. The electrochemical studies show that the OCFP exhibits excellent sensing performance for nitrite, with an ultralow determination limit of 0.1 μM and a detection limit of 0.07 μM, an ultrawide linear determination range of 0.1-3838.5 μM, a fast current response of 1 s, and a high sensitivity of 930.4 μA mM -1 cm -2 . These performance values are comparable or even superior to those for most reported noble- or transition-metal-based advanced nitrite sensors. Besides, this electrode also presents satisfactory stability, reproducibility, and feasibility of nitrite sensing in food samples. As an ideal monolithic and metal-free catalyst with ultrahigh and stable detection performance, the OCFP has a high potential to be integrated into next-generation electrochemical sensing devices.

Porous magnesium oxide (MgO) films on carbon fiber paper (CF) have been successfully fabricated in a hydrothermal route at different calcination temperatures. The CF@MgO samples (CF@MgO-300, -400, and -500) show different morphologies with the increasing surface area from 3 for CF to 27 m 2  g -1 for CF@MgO-400. Among the four investigated samples, the CF@MgO-400 exhibits the highest phosphate removal ability (~ 1230 mg g -1 ) with promising applications for the large-scale utilization at low cost.

Recycling every viable material to produce new value-added products not only reduces waste, but also provides an opportunity to create sustainable and innovative solutions while preserving our natural resources. With this motivation, electrically conductive one-dimensional carbon fibers and two-dimensional aluminum flakes reinforced cellulose matrix composite papers were manufactured using recycled materials with a scalable, eco-friendly, and low-cost papermaking process. The designed composite paper showed 36.1 dB electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMSE) with an absorbance-dominated performance by absorbing 98.85% of electromagnetic waves. An efficient impedance matching was obtained on the composite paper surface using reinforcements with different morphologies. Cellulose paper samples were converted to electrically conductive composites (0.415 S/cm), and the electrical conductivity was altered by tailoring the reinforcement ratios. Thermo-mechanical test results revealed that the cellulose matrix's storage modulus was increased from 1.44 to 2.1 GPa with a 46.5% improvement. The composite cellulose paper represented increased hydrophilicity with higher porosity. The environmentally friendly composite paper responses to the escalating environmental worries and possesses a tremendous possibility of being utilized as an electromagnetic shielding material. The aim of this study was to improve the electrical resistivity, mechanical properties, and interfacial properties between the carbon fiber (CF) and cellulose of conductive paper containing 10% CF so as to better meet the demands for electric heating wood floors. With waterborne polyurethane (WPU) treatment and nitrogen plasma modification methods, the interfacial properties between CF and cellulose were improved dramatically. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) revealed that the plasma modification method reduced the C-H contents and introduced numerous polar groups onto the CF surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the CF modified by WPU and plasma had good adhesion with cellulose. The tensile index, tensile energy absorption index, and burst index of the paper were enhanced because of the plasma and WPU coating. The carbon fiber and WPU method presented good synergistic action with respect to mechanical properties and electrical resistivity, and the lowest electrical resistivity of conductive paper was reduced from 0.68 •cm2 to 0.44 •cm2.

In this work, a dense mesoporous Co3O4 layer was first hydrothermally grown in situ on the surface of chopped carbon fibers (CFs), and then carbon fiber paper (Co3O4/CP) was prepared by a wet papermaking process as a flexible zinc-air battery (ZAB). The high-performance air cathode utilizes the high specific surface area of a single chopped carbon fiber, which is conducive to the deposition and adhesion of the Co3O4 layer. Through the wet papermaking process, Co3O4/CP has ultra-thin, high mechanical stability and excellent electrical conductivity. In addition, the assembled ZAB exhibits relatively excellent electrochemical performance, with a continuous cycle of more than 180 times at a current density of 2 mA·cm−2. The zinc-air battery can maintain a close fit and work stably and efficiently even under high bending conditions. This process of combining single carbon fibers to prepare ultra-thin, high-density, high-conductivity carbon fiber paper through a papermaking process has huge application potential in the field of flexible wearables.

The quest for multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) expedited the use of several nano reinforcements such as zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Zinc oxide is a semi-conductor with good piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. These properties could be transmitted to CFRPs when a nanophase of ZnO is embedded within CFRPs. In lieu of ZnO nanorods, Bucky paper comprising mat of CNTs could be sandwiched in-between composite laminae to construct a functionally graded composite with enhanced electrical conductivities. In this study, different configurations of hybrid composites based on carbon fibers with different combinations of ZnO nanorods and Bucky paper were fabricated. The composites were tested mechanically via tensile and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests to examine the effect of the different nanoadditives on the stiffness, strength and the damping performance of the hybrid composites. Electrical resistivities of the hybrid composites were probed to examine the contributions of the different nanoadditives. The results suggest that there are certain hybrid composite combinations that could lead to the development of highly multifunctional composites with better strength, stiffness, damping and electrical conductivity.

A novel and facile method by sewing low-cost fiber electrodes on paper is proposed to fabricate electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). Prussian Blue (PB) and Ag/AgCl were deposited on carbon fibers to prepare the working and reference electrodes. The hydrophilic carbon fiber was employed as the counter electrode. All electrodes were sewed on the paper substrate. The linear voltammetry scanning (LSV) and physical characterization results showed that the physico-chemical characteristics of the prepared electrode were maintained after sewing. As a proof of concept, the ePAD fabricating by sewing was used to detect hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2). The limit of detection (LOD) achieved 0.9 µM and the ePAD possessed high anti-interference ability to a variety of common ions and biological molecules. Additionally, the robustness of the ePADs against bending (error 6.2 %) manifested that the ePAD had excellent practical applicability. The good reproducibility (3.65 %) displayed by the current responses confirmed that this strategy can be profitably adopted to easily assemble ePADs in a highly flexible manner. In addition, a user-friendly reagent-free ePAD was proposed to determine the content of H 2 O 2 in real water sample without treatment. The good recovery percentage (95.7–99.7 %) demonstrated the high feasibility of the reagent-free ePAD with facile carbon fiber-sewed electrodes in the detection of H 2 O 2 from complex water samples. These results confirm that the sewing method is feasible and promising. This work provides a new insight into fabrication of highly sensitive and highly selective ePADs with fiber electrodes. Abstract Here we report the construction of CoFe 2 O 4 coating on carbon fiber and the coated paper was used as the interlayer between the separator and cathode of Li-S batteries. The amorphous CoFe 2 O 4 coating was deposited by the industry-oriented spray pyrolysis technique and carbon fiber was completely enwrapped by the coating. Compared to the non-coated carbon fiber, the coated carbon fiber as the interlayer exhibits a superior reversible capacity of 1086 mA h g−1 at moderate current of 0.1C and a low decay rate in the capacity of 0.043% per cycle after 1000 cycles at 1C. Excellent long-term cycling life and rate capacity were also achieved through the coated interlayer. The specially designed interlayer showed remarkable capability to trap effectively the intermediate LPS (lithium polysulfide). The significantly inhibited "shuttle effect" of LPS would give insight into designing and making the interlayer by using new coating materials for enhanced performances of the Li-S batteries. The fiber-shaped supercapacitor is a promising energy storage device in wearable and portable electronics because of its high flexibility, small size, and light weight. However, most of the reported fiber-shaped supercapacitors have exhibited low capacitance and energy density due to the limited surface area between the two fiber electrodes and operating voltage range. Herein, we successfully developed a coaxial fiber-shaped asymmetric supercapacitor (CFASC) made from MnO 2 /CNT-web paper as a cathode coupled with Fe 2 O 3 /carbon fiber as an anode with a high operating voltage of 2.2 V. The prepared CFASC device showed a high volumetric energy density of 0.43 mWh cm −3 at a power density of 0.02 W cm −3 , which is comparable to those of previously reported fiber-shaped supercapacitors. Additionally, CFASC exhibited good rate capability, long cycle life, and high volumetric capacitance (0.67 F cm −3 ) with excellent flexibility. Magnetically recyclable and self-propulsive micron carbon fiber (CF) immobilizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles with favorable solar-Fenton catalytic activity were successfully prepared by a combined twostep method. In the first step, CF was synthesized from waste paper and subsequently modified by mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) with biomimetic adhesion function and highly active functional groups. In the second, well-dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles were fabricated and anchored on the surface of the PDA modified CF. The solar-Fenton catalytic performance and reusability for the composites were fully evaluated. The results show the degradation rate of the prepared catalyst for methylene blue (MB) in a free agitating process reached 97.8% after 80 min under simulated Sunlight. After 10 repetitive catalytic cycles, the degradation rate for MB could maintain above 95% meanwhile the magnetic properties of the catalyst remained strong indicating good recovery of the catalyst after the reaction. The possible degradation mechanism of MB is also discussed. It indicates that hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the catalytic degradation reaction, while hole trapping and superoxide radical are beneficial to the enhancement of decolorization efficiency of MB. A simple, scalable approach is developed to fabricate a flexible hybrid paper electrode composed of the polyaniline/graphene and the carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced bacterial cellulose. The prepared hybrid paper presents high areal capacitance of 4.145 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2 and an extremely low sheet resistance of 29.7 Ω sq.−1. The CF endows the paper electrode remarkable foldability with no mechanical destruction. Even after being repeatedly bent 180° up to 1000 times, the initial capacitance can be retained up to 98%. A fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitor based on the resulting paper electrode has an excellent areal capacitance of 630 mF cm−2 and energy density of 2.8 mWh cm−3.
