In Indonesia, Chinese voluntary associations took on a new level of importance after the fall of Suharto’s New Order regime in 1998 that ushered in a revival of Chinese identity politics. At the same time, Sino-Indonesian relations are blossoming, and the rise of China as a global power means that Indonesia can only benefit from stronger ties with China in the future. In this new atmosphere of cooperation, I argue that Chinese Indonesian individuals and voluntary organizations play a crucial function as trade and cultural intermediaries. Drawing on both empirical and qualitative fieldwork data, in this paper, I examine how members of Chinese voluntary organizations view their ethnicity, national belonging, and strategic position in the contexts of post-Suharto Chinese identity politics and Sino-Indonesia relations. More broadly, this paper also offers a critical analysis of the internal dynamics of contemporary Overseas Chinese voluntary organizations and the role they play in building trade and sociocultural relationships between China and other countries. Associations are playing an increasingly important role in the development of the hotel industry. They can maintain market fairness, save transaction costs, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of market players. With the development of China's market economy, the government is also active in encouraging and nurturing social associations; in fact, some of the functions of government are beginning to be transferred to such associations. However, in existing domestic conditions there are many difficulties facing the development of hotel associations. This paper uses the Guangzhou Hotels Association as a case to study such associations' operational mechanisms and their changes over time. The aim is to identify the root causes of problems in the development of hotel associations, and to propose strategies to solve such problems. The Guangzhou Hotels Association was established on May 6 1988, with 42 members covering the whole area of Guangzhou. Although currently only 10% of hotels in Guangzhou are members of the Guangzhou Hotels Association, the association has a significant influence on the tourism industry due to the scale of its assets, total number of rooms, and income. Through theoretical analysis and empirical research this paper outlines the definition, nature and functions of hotel associations, and discusses the implementation of sector management and industry self-regulation from the perspective of new institutional economics. Methods used in this study included field work in the hotels, the collection of relevant papers on the basic concepts of association, and an analysis of the contents of the Guangzhou Hotels Association's magazines, conference materials, etc. From March to April 2011, fieldwork was conducted in the secretariat of the association at which the daily operations of the association were observed and materials relating to the association's work were collected. Subsequently, two employees of the association and twenty senior executives of member hotels were interviewed to determine their perceptions of changes in the association and their understanding of association functions. The paper proposes the following actions based on the results. First, the major management problem of the association is that it currently cannot be separated from the government. Accordingly, the government needs to take the lead in proposing management innovations for hotel associations, to accelerate the separation between government and the association, and transfer more of its management functions to the association. Second, hotel associations should be bold and innovative, and can build an organizational structure suitable for its geographical location and the development of the hotel industry, and enrich the functions it can offer to industry. By implementing these actions, hotel associations could provide better services for member hotels and promote management specialization within hotels. Based on these considerations, this paper provides a systematic understanding of the management theory and practices of the Guangzhou Hotels Association, which can provide an experiential reference for the development of other hotel associations as well as for local tourism associations. At the same time, this study revealed limitations in the current operational mechanisms of associations. First, there are negative effects resulting from the current role and management ability of hotel associations and these may reduce the efficiency and flexibility of business operations in the hotel industry in the future. Second, the development of hotel association operating mechanisms is often accompanied by the transfer of governance functions as well as by administrative restructuring. In this paper, I examine the use of performance-based financing to scale-up HIV testing in men who have sex with men, or MSM, by global health initiatives in China. This mechanism, which ties financing directly to the achievement of targets and indicators, assures that measurable results are produced from health interventions and accounts for financial spending. On the one hand, its adoption into HIV programming in China articulates with broader shifts in global health that place currency on particular forms of evidence. At the same time, performance-based financing reshapes how HIV interventions are carried out and what counts in these programmes. The suturing of financing to outputs directs what gets counted and how, and as a consequence leads to the production of measurable results as an end in and of themselves. Based on 22 months of ethnographic research carried out in China, I explore the effects of this mechanism and, in doing so, ask what gets left out in the pursuit of evidence. In particular, I demonstrate how the demand for outputs undermines HIV prevention in MSM, thus risking the very lives these interventions are intended to save. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

An institutional perspective has been increasingly adopted in recent studies to explain various aspects of internationalization activities of firms from emerging economies (Meyer & Peng, 2016; Peng, Wang, & Jiang, 2008), particularly China (Cui & Jiang, 2012; Morck, Yeung, & Zhao, 2008). Scholars often claim that the role of institutions in emerging economy firms’ internationalization is understated, hence more research is needed. In this commentary, which reflects on the intended contributions and theoretical and empirical issues of Buckley, Yu, Liu, Munjal, and Tao (2016), I aim to extend a discussion on whether and when such institutional explanations can be overstated. I focus on three issues: (1) conceptualization of institutions, (2) theorizing institutional effects, and (3) testing institutional effects. On each of these issues, I start by providing an overview of some common challenges in the literature. I then focus specifically on the paper as an illustration of how some of these challenges may be manifested. This is then followed by some recommendations for future research. Overall, I argue that pitfalls related to the conceptualization, theorizing and testing of institutional effects can lead researchers to overstate the institutional effects on firm strategic behaviors. These pitfalls can be avoided if researchers clarify the theoretical boundary of the institutional argument they adopt, properly model the institutional effects while taking into consideration other theoretically relevant constructs and mechanisms, and employ empirical design to overcome measurement errors and selection biases when testing not only the statistical significance, but also substantive (economic) significance of institutional effects. Supervisor-subordinate guanxi is an informal leader-member relationship that is of utmost importance in Chinese organizations. This paper explores Chinese employees' motives for building supervisor-subordinate guanxi through two studies. Study 1 develops an indigenous scale of motives for supervisor-subordinate guanxi. Four motive types (i.e., career advancement, team concern, personal life, and impression management) are identified, and the scale's convergent and discriminant validity is established. Study 2 examines the predictive power of these motive types. The results indicate that they, as a whole, account for unique variances in supervisor-subordinate guanxi. Furthermore, as single motive types, they have unequal impacts on this relationship and its dimensions. This research enhances understanding of what underlies supervisor-subordinate guanxi from a motivational perspective and has implications for Chinese indigenous research of guanxi. This paper extends the IS continuance model to improve our understanding of the determinants of E2.0 post-adoption. Our proposed research model incorporates four constructs into the IS continuance model: firm size, firm scope, subjective norms and competitive pressure from the perspective of organizational and environmental context based on the TOE framework. Results from a survey of customers of Mingdao, a leading Enterprise 2.0 platform in China, support our model. The research findings show that organizational and environmental context factors, including subjective norms and competitive pressure, significantly influence enterprises' intentions to renew their E2.0 service in addition to technology perceptions. Perceived usefulness and satisfaction are no longer the strongest predicators of continuance usage in the context of enterprise systems. As the profession of dance movement therapy (DMT) grows and develops, more DMT's are combining movement with counselling and psychology, making valuable contributions across the globe. The sudden threat of Covid-19 made the need for clarification and integration of cultural and professional boundaries clear. With a shrinking world and increasing threats of refugees, displacement, climate change, intergenerational trauma and pandemics, DMT's can join with other healing disciplines to bring creative healing options into communities and the world. A national comprehensive management pilot project for mental health has been implemented in China to provide integrated care for people with severe mental disorders through strengthened cooperation among government organisations and between government and other relevant social organisations. The promotion of community rehabilitation has been included as a key part of this pilot program. The present study took the AD district of Beijing as a case study to examine interorganisational cooperation and its effects on community rehabilitation in a real‐world setting. Interviews were conducted with 14 frontline workers, including 7 mental health workers from community health centres and 3 staff and 4 social workers working in rehabilitation centres. Five officials from relevant health and social welfare departments and a social work organisation were also interviewed. Experiences in Beijing revealed that interorganisational cooperation helped to build a multiagency workforce furnished with basic mental health knowledge at the community level, which rendered it possible for frontline workers to provide fundamental follow‐up services, pilot the case management model of service provision and increase the provision of psychosocial rehabilitation services within the poorly resourced context of Chinese mental healthcare. Moreover, the engagement of social organisations provided bottom‐up pressure to innovate through the active bringing forward of new ideas concerning cooperation and service delivery. However, differences in professional authority and commitment were observed. Health department officials and health professionals seemed to exercise a dominant role as compared to social welfare department officials and social workers. Future policy making should motivate social welfare department officials to improve social care for people with severe mental disorders. Social workers require training to improve their knowledge of mental health matters, and social organisations need greater latitude to strengthen their influence over the development of community rehabilitation services for people with severe mental disorders. This article investigates the impact of institutional difference and natural resource endowment in developing host countries on the location choice of Chinese OFDI. We found that institutional difference between China and host countries insignificantly affect the flow of Chinese OFDI, however, when observed on sectoral levels; Chinese investment is responsive to the institutional difference in non-fuel natural resource rich countries while institutional difference asserts insignificant influence on Chinese OFDI in fuel resource rich countries. This shows that institutions play a role in the location choice of Chinese OFDI but, it depends on the sector and institutional proximity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on 17 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2007-2011), this article critically examines the consequences of two global health initiatives (GHIs), the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation, on NGOs engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment among gay men in northwest China. I argue that a short-term surge in funding provided by GHIs between 2008 and 2010 exacerbated preexisting conflicts between NGOs by promoting a neoliberal process in which the state outsourced public health services to civil society organizations, deliberately encouraging a climate of competition among NGOs. I also show how GHIs encouraged the bureaucratization and medicalization of one grassroots gay NGO, channeling its activities away from broader political and social objectives and compelling the group to develop a narrower and more entrepreneurial emphasis on HIV testing and treatment. This article contributes to a deeper ethnographic understanding of the complex and perhaps unintended consequences of GHIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which aims at identifying and assessing semiformal social/crime control as well as semiformal organizations in China. Topics include comparison between community correctional workers from formal/governmental control agencies and semiformal community organizations; nature of semiformal control in Chinese community corrections; and supervision practices of Chinese community correctional workers.

This article uses an institutional approach to examine Chinese NGOs as an emerging organizational field. In mature organizational fields, the organizations are powerfully constrained to follow the institutional practices of that field. However, in an emerging organizational field, the institutionalized constraints are not yet established, so actors can try out a wide range of practices. Some of these practices will become the new “rules of the game” of the organizational field when it is established. The content of these rules will shape the relationship between NGOs and the Chinese party-state for future generations. We find that a Chinese NGO's resource strategy is shaped by two interacting factors. First, NGOs operate in an evolving ecology of opportunity. Second, the social entrepreneurs who lead Chinese NGOs perceive that ecology of opportunity through the lens of their personal experiences, beliefs and expertise. As a result, the initial strategies of the organizations in our sample were strongly influenced by the institutional experience of their founders. Former state bureaucrats built NGOs around alliances with party-state agencies. In contrast, NGO founders that had no party-state experience usually avoided the state and sought areas away from government control/attention, such as the internet or private business. Although E-Learning 2.0 has played a significant role in training and development within the organisational environment, after an initial acceptance, its use is frequently discontinued. Prior studies offered insights into participation in E-Learning; however, there is limited research on continuance intention towards E-Learning 2.0 systems in organisational contexts. Furthermore, the most widely used research models, such as technology acceptance model (TAM), neglect the interactive social processes in E-Learning 2.0. Therefore, this study proposes a unified model integrating the TAM, the information system success model and social motivation theories to investigate continuance intentions towards E-Learning 2.0 in an organisational context. A sample of 284 participants from companies in China that have already implemented E-Learning 2.0 systems took part in this study. Structural equation modelling was conducted to test the research hypotheses. The results show that the unified model provides a more comprehensive understanding of the cognitive processes and behaviours related to this context: (1) perceived usefulness and attitude were critical to the continuance intention towards an E-Learning 2.0 system; (2) perceived usefulness was a significant mediator of the effects from perceived ease of use, information quality and social influence on continuance intention; (3) perceived ease of use, information quality and social influence were found to play important roles in predicting the continuance intention; (4) system quality played an important role in affecting the perceived ease of use; and (5) unexpectedly, social motivations had no significant effect on attitude.
