This study investigates the stabilization performance of clayey soil treated with alkali-activated hybrid slag/cement. Sodium silicate (SS) and sodium hydroxide (SH) are used as alkali activators, whereas ground blast furnace slag (GGBS) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) are used as sources of aluminosilicate. A total of 27 different types of mixtures are used for stabilization. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of untreated clay and stabilized soils are performed at immediately, 3-, 7-, 28-, and 90 days curing times under air-dried and wet-cured conditions. In addition, 90-d volume and mass changes in the samples are measured. Stabilized samples with an SS/SH ratio of 1 under air-dried conditions reveal moistening at early curing ages (=28 days); afterward, sodium carbonate crystals appear in these samples at longer curing ages. Geopolymer-treated clayey soil exhibits lower volumetric and mass changes compared with OPC. Most of the stabilized clayey soil with alkali-activated hybrid slag/cement exhibits higher strength compared with OPC under air-dried and wet-cured conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using geopolymer in soil stabilization has gained much attention recently due to its efficiency in improving soil properties and being environmentally friendly at the same time. This research aims to investigate the effect of palm oil fuel ash (POFA)-based geopolymer on soft soil stabilization. The mechanical and microstructural performance of two types of clay soil treated with geopolymer produce from POFA material was the focus of this study. In this respect, a series of unconfined compression and direct shear tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties of soils treated with POFA-based geopolymer. Furthermore, the microstructural changes in the treated samples were analyzed using field emission electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). In accordance with the results, it was indicated that the shear strength of both soils soared by increasing the dosage of POFA-based geopolymer. Geopolymer with 40% POFA of the dry weight of soils yielded the highest UCS value at both curing periods, 7 and 28 days. Furthermore, the microstructural analysis revealed material modifications (N-A-S-H gel formation) related to strength enhancement. Clayey subgrade soil requires treatment in order to make the subgrade stable for pavement structures. Treatment of clayey soil i.e. stabilization of clayey soil by cement, lime, and fly ash are established techniques used in geotechnical and highway engineering. Stabilization by alkali activation of fly ash is reported recently but literatures are limited. Present study investigates the stress strain behavior, peak stress and ultimate strain of clayey soil stabilized by slag and slag-fly ash blending by alkali activation. The peak stress as high as 25.0 N/mm may be obtained at 50% slags content when 12 molar sodium hydroxide solutions were used. Peak stress, ultimate strain and slope of stress-strain curve of stabilized clay are controlled by Na/Al and Si/Al ratios. Stress-strain response and peak stress of slag and fly ash blended specimen are not governed by Na/Al and Si/Al ratios; rather the behavior is dependent predominantly on slag content. This paper evaluated the mechanical and microstructural behavior of a clayey soil stabilized by an alkali-activated binder composed of two residues (sugarcane bagasse ash and hydrated eggshell lime) and sodium hydroxide. The sugarcane bagasse ash, an agro-industrial waste, contains high aluminosilicates content (64.74 % silica and 13.25 % alumina), needed for alkali-activation processes; calcium additions from the lime (72.90 % calcium oxide) allow curing at room temperatures. An experimental design analyzed the mechanical behavior of soil-alkali activated binder, and soil-Portland cement mixtures. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (STS), stiffness (G 0), durability (accumulated loss of mass, ALM), and matric suction tests, and XRD and SEM-EDS investigations were performed. Statistical analysis showed a higher influence of the dry unit weight over the binders' mechanical results. In addition, binders presented similar mechanical results for mixtures cured in room temperature (23 °C) (e.g., UCS around 5 MPa for high density-high binder content samples with 30 % moisture content, and STS around 0.6 MPa for high density-high binder content samples with 28 % moisture content). For both binders, the lowest ALM was 1.63 % for high density-high binder content samples. The porosity/binder content index was a reliable parameter when evaluating soil stabilization. XRD and SEM analysis of alkali-activated samples showed, respectively, an amorphous hump attributed to disordered structures (C S H and (C,N)-A S H) and soil particles embedded in a cementitious matrix.
