Terahertz (THz) band communication is envisioned as a key technology to satisfy the increasing demand for ultrabroadband wireless systems, thanks to its ultrabroad bandwidth. Tailored for the unique properties of pulse-based communications in the THz band, two timing acquisition algorithms are proposed and analyzed thoroughly in this paper. First, a low-sampling-rate (LSR) synchronization algorithm is proposed, by extending the theory of sampling signals with finite rate of innovation in the communication context and exploiting the properties of the annihilating filter. The simulation results show that the timing accuracy at an order of ten picoseconds is achievable. In particular, the LSR algorithm has high performance with uniform sampling at $1/20$ of the Nyquist rate when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is high (i.e., greater than 18 dB). Complementary to this, a maximum likelihood (ML) approach for timing acquisition is developed, which searches for the timing offsets by adopting a two-step acquisition procedure based on the ML criterion. The simulation results show that the ML-based algorithm is well suitable in the low SNR case with a half-reduced search space. For further evaluation, the error performance and the resulting bit-error-rate sensitivity to the timing errors in the LSR and the ML algorithms are both analytically and numerically studied. This paper considers a method for improving physical layer security of wireless networks with full-duplex radio. In particular, fast algorithms are developed to compute power allocations in subcarriers, subject to power and rate constraints, to maximize the secrecy capacity of a three-node network consisting of a source, a full-duplex destination, and an eavesdropper. A residual level of radio self-interference channel is considered. The optimal power allocation at the destination is found to be significant especially when its power budget is high. Also studied in this paper are a network with multiple full-duplex destinations and another network with multiple sources. Using the algorithms developed in this paper, we are able to show that a multiuser strategy that optimizes the power distributions among the users (in terms of either the sources or the destinations) can yield a substantial gain of secrecy capacity over a single-user strategy. Ultradense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are emerging as an inevitable approach to tackle the capacity crunch in cellular networks. However, imbalanced load among small and macrocells and poor resource utilization as a consequence in HetNets remains a long-standing problem. This paper addresses this problem by presenting a solution for maximization of coverage and capacity while minimizing load imbalance among macro and small cells. Most recent studies on the topic focus on either optimization of coverage, capacity or load, or a combination of two of these three intertwined objectives. We formulate the optimization problem as a function of two hard parameters namely antenna tilt and transmit power, and a soft parameter, cell individual offset, that affect the coverage, capacity, and load directly. The resulting solution is a combination of the otherwise conflicting coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) and load balancing (LB) self-organizing network (SON) functions. In the presented joint CCO-LB solution, a conflict free operation of CCO and LB is ensured by designing a novel load aware user association methodology and resolving the effects of shadowing on coverage probability using stochastic approximation. The problem is proven to be nonconvex and is solved using genetic algorithm, sequential quadratic programming, and pattern search algorithms. The proposed CCO-LB solution is compared against two recently proposed CCO and CCO-LB solutions in the literature. Consider the single-group multicast beamforming problem, where multiple users receive the same data stream simultaneously from a single transmitter. The problem is NP-hard and all existing algorithms for the problem either find suboptimal approximate or local stationary solutions. In this paper, we propose an efficient branch-and-bound algorithm for the problem that is guaranteed to find its global solution. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed algorithm is the first tailored global algorithm for the single-group multicast beamforming problem. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is computationally efficient (albeit its theoretical worst-case iteration complexity is exponential with respect to the number of receivers) and it significantly outperforms a state-of-the-art general-purpose global optimization solver called Baron. Our proposed algorithm provides an important benchmark for performance evaluation of existing algorithms for the same problem. By using it as the benchmark, we show that two state-of-the-art algorithms, semidefinite relaxation algorithm and successive linear approximation algorithm, work well when the problem dimension (i.e., the number of antennas at the transmitter and the number of receivers) is small but their performance deteriorates quickly as the problem dimension increases. The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system makes efficient use of spectrum and increases the transmission throughput in wireless communications. The sphere decoding (SD) is an efficient algorithm that enables the maximum-likelihood (ML) detection for the MIMO system. However, the SD algorithm has variable complexity, and its complexity increases rapidly with decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose a novel ML detection algorithm for the MIMO system based on differential metrics. We define the differential metrics and derive the associated recursive calculation. We then give the indicative functions, which can be used to possibly find some ML-detected bits of the initial sequence. The indicative functions are further applied to implement an efficient tree search for ML detection. The proposed algorithm does not need QR decomposition and matrix inversion. The tree search process needs only the additive operation, while the number of multiplications before the tree search is constant. Our algorithm can achieve the exact ML detection as the SD algorithm. Unlike the SD algorithm, the complexity of our algorithm reduces with decreasing SNR, whereas at high SNR, the complexity is nearly constant. We also give the convergence analysis for the SD and proposed algorithms, and the simulation verifies our analysis. For the proposed algorithm, the number of necessary memory is constant during the tree search, and the implementation by parallel processing is possible. We present in this paper a novel proactive interference avoidance scheme for mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communication as an underlay in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) downlink networks. The proposed scheme introduces an intelligent user-selective resource allocation algorithm that aims to proactively avoid interference between M2M pairs and LTE regular users while achieving a satisfactory link budget for both M2M and LTE regular links. The proposed resource allocation algorithm is based on a novel low-complexity interference estimation approach that requires only channel quality indicator (CQI) information (CSI). Since the CQI reporting mechanism has been already implemented in current LTE systems, the proposed algorithm is indeed practical and standard compatible, compared with the existing works that require perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). In this research, achievable data throughput with LTE-compliant adaptive modulation and coding has been adopted as the optimization measurement, rather than the information-theoretic capacity. Therefore, the performance of the proposed scheme is practically realizable in LTE communication systems. Since the performance of the proposed scheme highly relies on the accuracy of CQI feedback, we also carry out performance analysis to evaluate the impact of CQI estimation error and delay. The simulation results show that the total achievable data throughput for LTE networks is dramatically enhanced by M2M communication with this proposed interference avoidance resource allocation scheme. Estimation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) plays an important role in many fields of communications. This paper addresses the SNR estimation of multiple phase-shift keying (MPSK) signals in Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. A family of SNR estimators with closed-form expressions is developed based on the relationship among different orders of moments. Compared with the existing algorithms, the estimator, which exploits the minimum order of moments, exhibits the best performance in general. We also propose a joint estimation algorithm for SNR and the fading factor when it is unknown. Simulation results verify the feasibility and superiority of the proposed algorithms. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the load between macrocell base stations (MBSs) and small-cell base stations (SBSs) is imbalanced due to their different transmission powers and locations. This load imbalance significantly impacts system performance and affects the experience of mobile users (MUs) with different priorities. In this paper, we aim to distributively optimize the user association in HetNets with various user priorities to solve the load balancing problem. Since the user association is a binary matching problem, which is NP-hard, we propose a distributed belief propagation (BP) algorithm to approach the optimal solution. We first develop a factor graph model, using the network topology, to represent this user association problem. With this factor graph, we propose a novel distributed BP algorithm by adopting the proportional fairness as the objective. Next, we theoretically prove the existence of the fixed point in our BP algorithm. To be more practical, we develop an approximation method to significantly reduce the computational and communication complexity of the BP algorithm. Furthermore, we analyze some properties of the factor graph relevant to the performance of the BP algorithm using the stochastic geometry. Simulation results show that 1) the proposed BP algorithm well approaches the optimal system performance and achieves a much better performance compared with other association schemes and that 2) the analytical results on the average degree distribution and sparsity of the factor graph match with those obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper, we study the power allocation problem in a multiuser cooperative network, where users help each other's transmissions to an access point. We use iterative double auction (IDA) game to model the interaction among the users and the access point. In each iteration of this game, the users first submit bids for buying other users' power and asks for selling its own power, and then, the access point determines the power allocation based on users' bids and asks. We propose a distributed algorithm for the implementation of the IDA-based power allocation. We also show that the proposed algorithm achieves a weighted sum signal-to-noise ratio (sum-SNR)-optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a self-directed adaptive phased array control method using the low-frequency part of the signal for a millimeter-wave wireless personal area network, which can reduce the hardware requirement and power consumption compared with those of the conventional digital beamforming method. The signal from each element antenna of the antenna array is phase shifted and down converted to the baseband and then divided into two paths. The first paths are low-pass filtered to extract the low-frequency part of the signals for beamforming control. The second paths from all antennas are combined in-phase in an analog domain and then sampled by two high-speed A/D converters for demodulation. A beamforming algorithm using the sampled low-frequency part of the signal is also proposed. The beamforming calculation time is established as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio, the bandwidth of the low-frequency part, and the required phase control accuracy. The calculated values match the measured results. Using the IEEE 802.15.3c specifications with an eight-element array antenna, the calculation time is less than \5~\mu\s for initial beam establishment and less than \30~\mu\s for beam tracking. In an interference limited network, joint power and admission control (JPAC) aims at supporting a maximum number of links at their specified signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) targets while using minimum total transmission power. Various convex approximation deflation approaches have been developed for the JPAC problem. In this paper, we propose an effective polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for solving the problem. The approach is based on the non-convex \ell q~(0< q< 1) approximation of an equivalent sparse \ell 0 reformulation of the JPAC problem. We show that, for any instance of the JPAC problem, there exists a \bar q\in (0,1) such that it can be exactly solved by solving its \ell q approximation problem with any q\in (0, \bar q]. We also show that finding the global solution of the \ell q approximation problem is NP-hard. Then, we propose a potential reduction interior-point algorithm, which can return an \epsilon -KKT solution of the NP-hard \ell q approximation problem in polynomial time. The returned solution can be used to check the simultaneous supportability of all links in the network and to guide an iterative link removal procedure, resulting in the polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for the JPAC problem. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing convex approximation approaches in terms of the number of supported links and the total transmission power, particularly exhibiting a quite good performance in selecting which subset of links to support. Optimal signaling for secrecy rate maximization in Gaussian MIMO wiretap channels is considered. While this channel has attracted a significant attention recently and a number of results have been obtained, including the proof of the optimality of Gaussian signalling, an optimal transmit covariance matrix is known for some special cases only and the general case remains an open problem. An iterative custom-made algorithm to find a globally-optimal transmit covariance matrix in the general case is developed in this paper, with guaranteed convergence to a global optimum. While the original optimization problem is not convex and hence difficult to solve, its minimax reformulation can be solved via the convex optimization tools, which is exploited here. The proposed algorithm is based on the barrier method extended to deal with a minimax problem at hand. Its convergence to a global optimum is proved for the general case (degraded or not) and a bound for the optimality gap is given for each step of the barrier method. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated via numerical examples. In particular, 20 to 40 Newton steps are already sufficient to solve the sufficient optimality conditions with very high precision (up to the machine precision level), even for large systems. Even fewer steps are required if the secrecy capacity is the only quantity of interest. The algorithm can be significantly simplified for the degraded channel case and can also be adopted to include the per-antenna power constraints (instead or in addition to the total power constraint). Radar signal design in a spectrally crowded environment is currently a challenge due to the increasing requests for spectrum from both military sensing applications and civilian wireless services. The goal of this paper is to improve a previously devised algorithm for the synthesis of optimized radar waveforms fulfilling spectral compatibility with overlaid licensed radiators. The new technique achieves an enhanced spectral coexistence with the surrounding electromagnetic environment through a suitable modulation of the transmitted waveform energy, which was kept fixed at the maximum level in the previously devised algorithm. At the analysis stage, the waveform performance is studied in terms of trade-off among the achievable Signal to Interference Plus Noise Ratio (SINR), spectral shape, and the resulting Autocorrelation Function (ACF), also in situations where the previous technique cannot be applied. Due to signal fading and user mobility in wireless networks, quality-of-service provisioning for wireless services has become more challenging. As a promising technique, cooperative communications make use of the broadcasting nature of the wireless medium to facilitate data transmission and, thereby, reduce energy consumption. However, in many studies on wireless cooperative diversity, it is often assumed that the number of relays or the relay distribution intensity is known a priori. In this paper, we relax this assumption and propose an algorithm to estimate the relay intensity for a backoff-based cooperative scheme, where the relays are distributed as a homogeneous Poisson point process. It is proved that the algorithm can converge to an optimal solution with the minimum estimation error. Based on the estimated relay intensity, we further investigate a distributed energy saving strategy, which selectively turns off some relays to reduce energy consumption while maintaining the required transmission success probability. The performance of the proposed cooperative scheme is analytically evaluated with respect to the collision probability. The numerical and simulation results demonstrate the high accuracy and efficiency of the intensity estimation algorithm and validate the theoretical analysis. Moreover, the proposed cooperative scheme exhibits significant energy savings and satisfactory transmission performance, which offers a good match to accommodate green communications in wireless networks. We consider the uplink transmission in multiuser wireless systems with multiple single-antenna transmitting users and a multiantenna receiver. We address two problems in this paper. The first problem is user admission, i.e., given a large number of users, how to admit the maximum number of users that can simultaneously satisfy quality of service (QoS) and power constraints. The second problem is how to distribute the data among the users when they are allowed to share data before transmission. The aim is to minimize the total data exchange cost. Such a problem is called user clustering. We formulate those problems into sparsity-maximization problems, which are NP-hard. Inspired by compressive sensing techniques, we propose a common framework to tackle those problems by first applying the \ell1 -norm relaxation and then solving them with convex optimization methods. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms achieve excellent performance. For user admission, the numbers of admitted users by the proposed algorithms are close to the optimum numbers of admitted users obtained by exhaustive search (ES) . For user clustering, the total data exchange cost is reduced by more than 10% after only a few iterations. Cognitive radio (CR) is currently one of the most promising solutions for designing spectrum-efficient wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present a greedy cognitive access policy that handles spectrum sensing with the tools of image processing. By means of the Wigner–Ville transform (WVT), we are able to analyze the time and frequency features of the received interference, and represent them on a time–frequency grid as an image in which brightness reveals the spectrum occupancy. According to sensed interference, each secondary user autonomously tries to access the grid following a multiple-division principle, i.e., by properly shaping the signal in the code, time, and frequency domains. In detail, this is realized by processing the WVT to derive the shaping mask (and the matching algorithm) that allows the filling up of the “time spectrum holes.” Numerical simulations and a test-bed implementation show how the proposed scheme outperforms selected state-of-the-art approaches while still presenting an affordable computational cost.
