This paper offers a critical appraisal of the methodological capacity of Discourse Studies (DS) in conducting urban research. Based on an extensive literature search, 125 publications that explicitly claim to utilise DS were reviewed. The results show that DS has been utilised for its methodological value, critical lens, interdisciplinary approach, ability to reveal the undiscovered, and presentation of new insights to urban questions. This paper identifies and discusses major sources of inspiration and main trends in utilising DS in urban research. Theoretical diversity, the scarcity of analytical framework, and the lack of required expertise and skills are presented as three main methodological challenges for urban researchers. This paper concludes with suggestions for advancing the use of DS in urban research: obtaining an in-depth knowledge about its theoretical foundations, gaining an analytical overview of the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, developing innovative frameworks that better explain urban questions, and gaining required linguistic knowledge for the application of DS. This study explores the relationship between the extraordinary poetic achievement of Sharīf al-Raḍī (d. 406/1016) in his highly lyrical and influential Dīwān , on the one hand, and the literary-religious accomplishment of his unrivalled compilation of the sermons, epistles, and sayings of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Nahj al-balāghah , on the other. It examines the interplay among the contemporary Mutanabbī-dominated literary scene, the Imāmī Shīʿite dominated Baghdādī politico-religious scene, and, in Islamic scholarship generally, the increasingly balāghah - (rhetoric)-focused theological discourse on iʿjāz al-Qurʾān (the miraculous inimitability of the Qurʾān). Finally, the paper attempts to connect al-Raḍī's sense of alienation and dispossession from his hereditary right to rule—one that he has found so strikingly expressed in the sermons of his forefather ʿAlī—and the extraordinary lyrical-elegiac strain in his own poetry. The paper comprehensively analyzes the historiography of the formation and development of the relations between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during 1991--2020. The authors of the article explored a set of texts devoted to the subject of Ukraine -- NATO relations and provided their historiographic analysis. The aim of the article is to identify the main trends and tendencies in the interpretation of the achievements of Ukraine-NATO cooperation. Also, this article elucidates the main aspects of the evolution of the historical discourse of Ukraine--NATO relations, characterizes their content and tendencies of progressive development, and pays special attention to the conceptual analysis of the contribution of individual scientists and institutions to the development of knowledge about Ukraine -- NATO relations. The authors offer the original approach to the periodization of the development of the historiographical process and as well as provide a detailed description of each stage. The authors rely on the scientific principles of historicism and objectivity, general scientific (analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction) and special-historical (historical-chronological, historical-comparative, retrospective, systematic structural, historical-typological, etc.) methods. The contribution of researchers to the study of the historical preconditions for the formation of the contact between Ukraine and NATO in their political, military- technical, economic, and humanitarian aspects, as well as normative-legal and organizational-institutional principles of the cooperation, are identified and comprehensively analyzed. The authors identified the areas that require further scientific research and pointed out the prospects for further investigation on various aspects of Ukraine -- NATO relations in order to ensure the integration of our country into the North Atlantic Alliance. Peace and security were once marginal in Sino-African relations. Recently, however, reflecting China's more proactive role as a global security actor, they have become central. Yet while China's actions mirror this shift, the official China–Africa discourse has not changed. This article, based on fieldwork interviews and discourse analysis of official Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) documents, proposes a theoretically grounded study of China's Africa discourse to account for the role it plays in maintaining continuity through time. It makes a threefold claim. First, while the China–Africa discourse has not been given much attention in the literature, it is crucial to explaining the overall success of China's engagement in the continent. Second, the shift in China's policies towards greater participation in peace and security is not mirrored by changes in the official discourse. Third, and related, this is owing mostly to the successful articulation of the link between the promotion of economic growth and the achievement of stability – the security–development nexus – and to the generally positive reception the discourse has found among African leaders. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group Recent studies on language learning motivation have foregrounded notions of identity formation and self-fulfilment. This paper takes two different theoretical frameworks as points of departure (Dörnyei’s ‘L2 Motivational Self System’ and Kramsch’s ‘desire in language’), but it looks at the motivation/desire of the parents of young language learners, rather than at the learners themselves. Based on in-depth interviews about language and identity with nine parents of various linguistic and social backgrounds in Brussels (Belgium), the data reveal that these parents frequently had vivid mental images of what their multilingual children could achieve in the future (in contrast to their own ‘monolingual’ achievements). Additionally, they imagined their children having future access to a range of identity options thanks to this multilingual education. In this way, we show that ‘desire in language’ is not limited to the construction of an inwardly generated identity; it can also be projected outwardly onto other individuals, in this case by parents onto their children. ispartof: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BILINGUAL EDUCATION AND BILINGUALISM vol:22 issue:5 pages:535-550 status: published

(DIPF/Orig.), Excellence and top performance seem to be without alternative in education and science. Previous studies have shown that this idea is enforced within the framework of an educational policy ratio based on the realisation of an economically based pursuit of performance through competition orientation. While excellence is associated with internationality, competition, innovation, diversity und networking, the cautiously used term 'elite' is related to tradition, giftedness and social responsibility. Despite its discursive dissemination in different segments of the educational system, the central idea of elite education is by no means uncontested. With a long-term perspective, the article examines the semantic shifts and fractures of excellence-oriented educational policies in Germany from the mid-1990s to the present day. On the basis of education policy, media and institutional publications and concepts, it will be shown how the critique of excellence and elite was founded and what contexts it produces. The paper clarifies the references of functionalist, traditionalist or emancipatory criticism of the discourse of excellence and elite and the related alignments and antagonisms, antinomies and ambiguities connected to it. The longitudinal perspective points out that the discourse of excellence is strengthened by the integration of individual criticism. The analysis of the controversy of elite education also shows the mechanisms that contribute to the effectiveness of the excellence-discourse. (DIPF/Orig.)

The present paper aims to focus on how the circuit of different discourses in Alexandria and Rome contributes to the subject formation in Antony and Cleopatra. Identity, which acts as trap in this play, precipitates the characters from two different countries or contexts into a war through creating binarized categories with heterogeneous possibilities. Mark Antony - one of the Triumvirs of Rome in search for self-actualization strives against his country’s discourse in the beginning, he places himself in the warring discourses of Rome and Alexandria. When in Alexandria, he is inside the discourses of Rome, and when in Rome, he is inside the discourses of Alexandria. Like the nature of the signifier as it can happen and be determined by other contexts, Antony retains references to Rome when he is Alexandria, and establishes himself as a subject and makes his signification possible in this foreign country by relating himself to epicurean concepts other than his own former stoic attitudes. Thus, mark of the past element remains in him. Through discourse analysis, this study aims to analyze how the loop of self-hood is firmly tied by the signifiers, and how power, which is not solely negative and repressive, but positive and productive, shapes Antony’s capricious personality as he both challenges and is challenged by power. In the end it is revealed that Mark Anthony refashions his identity and perspective by admitting and embracing multiplicity between Rome’s stoicism and Alexandria's Epicureanism.
