Rice is the most important food crop in China. Rice seed vigor is a complex quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes and it is of great significance to improve rice seed vigor for high yield, quality and efficiency of production under direct seedling rice. This paper reviewed the main research advances including evaluation index, gene identification and cloning, molecular regulation mechanism relate to rice seed vigor in recent years. Based on the molecular markers and map-based cloning, genome-wide association study(GWAS), high throughput sequencing, and omics techonology, more than twenty-three key genes related to seed vigor have been cloned, including transcription factor genes, metabolism-related genes of plant hormone ABA and GA. Through the balance of ABA and GA metabolism, it regulates maturing of embryos, seed dormancy and germination, seedling growth. It will be very helpful to improve genetics of rice seed vigor by molecular design breeding technology in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The R2R3-MYB transcription factors are a crucial and extensive gene family in plants, which participate in diverse processes, including development, metabolism, defense, differentiation, and stress response. In the Lingnan region of China, Morinda officinalis is extensively grown and is renowned for its use as both a medicinal herb and food source. However, there are relatively few reports on the R2R3-MYB transcription factor family in M.officinalis. Results: In this study, we identified 97 R2R3-MYB genes in the genome of Morinda officinalis and classified them into 32 subgroups based on phylogenetic comparison with Arabidopsis thaliana. The lack of recent whole-genome duplication events in M.officinalis may be the reason for the relatively few members of the R2R3-MYB family. We also further analyzed the physical and chemical characteristics, conserved motifs, gene structure, and chromosomal location. Gene duplication events found 21 fragment duplication pairs and five tandem duplication event R2R3-MYB genes in M.officinalis may also affect gene family expansion. Based on phylogenetic analysis, cis-element analysis, co-expression analysis and RT-qPCR, we concluded that MoMYB33 might modulate flavonol levels by regulating the expression of 4-coumarate-CoA ligase Mo4CL2, chalcone isomerase MoCHI3, and flavonol synthase MoFLS4/11/12. MoMYB33 and AtMYB111 showed the highest similarity of 79% and may be involved in flavonol synthase networks by the STRING database. Moreover, we also identified MoMYB genes that respond to methyl Jasmonate (MeJA) and abscisic acid (ABA) stress by RT-qPCR. Conclusions: This study offers a thorough comprehension of R2R3-MYB in M.officinalis, which lays the foundation for the regulation of flavonol synthesis and the response of MoMYB genes to phytohormones in M.officinalis. Sphagneticola trilobata is an invasive plant in South China. A hybrid between S. trilobata and Sphagneticola calendulacea (a native related species) has also been found in South China. The drought resistance of S. calendulacea, S. trilobata and their hybrid was studied in this paper. Under drought stress, the leaves of S. trilobata synthesized more abscisic acid (ABA) than those of the other species to reduce stomatal opening and water loss. The activities of antioxidant enzymes were the highest in S. trilobata and the lowest in S. calendulacea. The leaves of S. calendulacea suffered the most serious damage, and their maximum photochemical efficiency was the lowest. RNA-sequencing ware used to analyze the expression levels of genes in ABA, antioxidant enzyme, sugar and proline synthesis and photosynthesis pathways. Further real-time PCR detection verified the RNA-sequence results, and the results were in accordance with the physiological data. The results showed that S. trilobata was the most drought tolerant, and the drought tolerance of the hybrid did not show heterosis but was higher than S. calendulacea. Therefore, compared with S. trilobata and the hybrid, the population number and distribution of S. calendulacea may be less in arid areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: P. ternata is a perennial herb of the family Araceae that grows in China and has various medicinal properties and applications. At present, the artificial cultivation of P. ternata is constrained by seedling propagation. To address the problems of low seedling breeding propagation efficiency and high cost, our group has developed a highly efficient cultivation technology for "hydroponic cuttings of P. ternata "for the first time. P. ternata is used as the source material and is grown in a hydroponic system, increasing the seedling production rate 10-fold compared with the traditional cultivation mode. However, the callus formation mechanism in cuttings from hydroponic cultivation is still remains unclear. Methods: In order to better understand the biological process of callus formation in cuttings from hydroponic P. ternata, anatomical characterization, endogenous hormone content determination and transcriptome sequencing were performed on five callus stages from early growth to early senescence. Results: Regarding the four major hormones during the callus developmental stages of P. ternata hydroponic cuttings, cytokinins showed an increasing trend during callus formation. IAA(indole-3-acetic acid) and abscisic acid contents increased at 8d and then decreased, while jasmonic acid content gradually decreased. A total of 254137 unigenes were identified by transcriptome sequencing in five callus formation stages. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that differentially expressed unigenes were involved in various plant hormone signaling and hormone synthesis-related pathways. The expression patterns of 7 genes were validated using quantitative real-time PCR. Discussion: This study presented integrated transcriptomic and metabolic analysis approach to obtain insights into the underlying biosynthetic mechanisms and function of key hormones involved in the callus formation process from hydroponic P. ternata cuttings. As the main component of plant cell walls, lignin can not only provide mechanical strength and physical defense for plants, but can also be an important indicator affecting the properties and quality of wood and bamboo. Dendrocalamus farinosus is an important economic bamboo species for both shoots and timber in southwest China, with the advantages of fast growth, high yield and slender fiber. Caffeoyl-coenzyme A-O-methyltransferase (CCoAOMT) is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the lignin biosynthesis pathway, but little is known about it in D. farinosus. Here, a total of 17 DfCCoAOMT genes were identified based on the D. farinosus whole genome. DfCCoAOMT1/14/15/16 were homologs of AtCCoAOMT1. DfCCoAOMT6/9/14/15/16 were highly expressed in stems of D. farinosus; this is consistent with the trend of lignin accumulation during bamboo shoot elongation, especially DfCCoAOMT14. The analysis of promoter cis-acting elements suggested that DfCCoAOMTs might be important for photosynthesis, ABA/MeJA responses, drought stress and lignin synthesis. We then confirmed that the expression levels of DfCCoAOMT2/5/6/8/9/14/15 were regulated by ABA/MeJA signaling. In addition, overexpression of DfCCoAOMT14 in transgenic plants significantly increased the lignin content, xylem thickness and drought resistance of plants. Our findings revealed that DfCCoAOMT14 can be a candidate gene that is involved in the drought response and lignin synthesis pathway in plants, which could contribute to the genetic improvement of many important traits in D. farinosus and other species. Catalpa bungei is an economically important tree with high-quality wood, which is highly ornamentally valuable in China. Salinity is one of the major constraints restricting the growth of the C. bungei. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the salt stress response remains unknown in C. bungei. In our previous study, a novel WRKY transcription factor gene CbWRKY27 was isolated using association mapping based on the transcriptome database of Catalpa Yuqiu1. In this study, CbWRKY27 was found to function as a transcriptional activator in the nucleus. The transcription of CbWRKY27 was inhibited under salt stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) but was induced after abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. CbWRKY27-overexpression plants showed decreased tolerance to salt stress compared to wild type while enhancing sensitivity to ABA-regulated lateral root length. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) studies showed that the transcript levels of the ABA biosynthesis gene (NCED3), signaling genes (ABI3 and ABI5), and responsive genes (RD29B and RD22) were greatly increased in CbWRKY27-overexpression plants under salt stress. Under salt treatment, CbWRKY27-overexpression plants disturbed ROS homeostasis by repressing antioxidant enzymes and enhancing the production of O2− and H2O2 through down-regulation of ROS-scavenging-related genes (APX, SOD, and PER57). In recent years, Spodoptera frugiperda (S. frugiperda, Smith) has invaded China, seriously threatening maize production. To explore an effective method to curb the further expansion of the harm of the S. frugiperda, this experiment used maize seedlings of the Zhengdan 958 three-leaf stage (V3) of maize as the material to study the effect of coronatine (COR) on the ability of maize to resist insects (S. frugiperda) at the seedling stage. The results showed that when maize was sprayed with 0.05 μM COR, the newly incubated larvae of S. frugiperda had the least leaf feeding. It was found that 0.05 μM COR significantly increased the contents of abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonate (JA) in maize leaves through the determination of hormone content. Moreover, transcriptome sequencing revealed that the expression of six genes (ZmBX1, ZmBX2, ZmBX3, ZmBX4, ZmBX5 and ZmBX6), which are associated with the synthesis of benzoxazinoid, were upregulated. Nine genes (ZmZIM3, ZmZIM4, ZmZIM10, ZmZIM13, ZmZIM18, ZmZIM23, ZmZIM27, ZmZIM28 and ZmZIM38) of JA-Zim Domain (JAZ) protein in the JA signal pathway, and seven genes (ZmPRH19, ZmPRH18, Zm00001d024732, Zm00001d034109, Zm00001d026269, Zm00001d028574 and Zm00001d013220) of ABA downstream response protein Group A Type 2C Protein Phosphatase (PP2C) were downregulated. These results demonstrated that COR could induce anti-insect factors and significantly improve insect resistance in seedling maize, which laid a theoretical foundation for further study of the mechanism of COR improving insect resistance in seedling maize, and provided data references for the use of COR as an environmentally friendly pest control method. Asarum sieboldii Miq., a perennial herb of the family Aristolochiaceae, is widely used in China to treat cold, fever, aphthous stomatitis, toothache, gingivitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Methyleugenol is the most representative pharmacological constituent of this medicinal herb. Cinnamoyl‐CoA reductase (CCR), which has been well known for occupying a critical position in the lignin biosynthesis pathway, is also shared with the biosynthesis of methyleugenol. To better understand the regulatory mechanisms of methyleugenol biosynthesis, a 1530‐bp long promoter region of the AsCCR1 gene was isolated. PLACE and PlantCARE analysis affirmed the existence of the core promoter elements such as TATA and CAAT boxes, abiotic stress‐responsive cis‐regulation elements like abscisic acid‐responsive element, G‐box, and MBS in the isolated sequence. The histochemical assay suggested that it was a constitutive promoter, highly expressed in the root tissue. Moreover, the region of −200 bp to ATG (start codon) was enough to drive the expression of It GUS gene. Treatments with low temperature and high concentration of gibberellin or abscisic acid demonstrated the abiotic stress‐induced expression of the AsCCR1 promoter. Overall, this study revealed the isolation and characterization of the AsCCR1 promoter. Winterberry (Ilex verticillata (L.) A. Gray) is a recently introducedornamental tree species in China that has not been closely investigated for its drought resistance. In this study, we used two-year-old cuttings from I. verticillata (L.) A. Gray and two representative varieties derived from it, I. verticillata 'Oosterwijk' and I. verticillata 'Jim Dandy', as materials to investigate how this plant responds to drought stress and whether exogenous spermidine (SPD) can alleviate the negative effects caused by drought stress. The results showed that as the degree of drought stress increased, the leaves of winterberry seedlings became chlorotic, and their edges became dry. Similarly, the relative water content, specific leaf weight, chlorophyll content, leaf nitrogen content, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate were significantly reduced, whereas the content of malondialdehyde continuously increased with the degree of drought stress. The activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase increased undermoderate drought stress and then decreased under severe drought stress. The levels of soluble sugar and abscisic acid continued to increase, while those of auxin and gibberellic acid decreased. When compared with individual drought stress, an increase in the amount of external SPD clearly alleviated the effect of drought stress on winterberry seedlings. The combined phenotypes and physiological indices of the winterberry leaves under drought stress conditions revealed that the drought resistance of the native species was significantly higher than its two varieties. Sucrose is the main transported form of photosynthetic products. Sucrose transporter (SUT) participates in the translocation of sucrose from source to sink, which is important for the growth and development of plants. Dendrocalamus farinosus is an important economic crop in southwestern China because of its high growth rate, high fiber content, and dual usage for food and timber, but the mechanism of sucrose transportation in D. farinosus is unclear. In this study, a total of 12 SUT transporter genes were determined in D. farinosus by whole-genome identification. DfSUT2, DfSUT7, and DfSUT11 were homologs of rice OsSUT2, while DfSUT4 was a homolog of OsSUT4, and these four DfSUT genes were expressed in the leaf, internode, node, and bamboo shoots of D. farinosus. In addition, DfSUT family genes were involved in photosynthetic product distribution, ABA/MeJA responses, and drought resistance, especially DfSUT4. The function of DfSUT4 was then verified in Nicotiana tabacum. DfSUT4 was localized mainly in the leaf mesophyll and stem phloem of pDfSUT4::GUS transgenic plant. The overexpression of DfSUT4 gene in transgenic plant showed increases of photosynthetic rate, above-ground biomass, thousand grain weight, and cellulose content. Our findings altogether indicate that DfSUT4 can be a candidate gene that can be involved in phloem sucrose transportation from the source leaves to the sink organs, phytohormone responses, abiotic stress, and fiber formation in plants, which is very important in the genetic improvement of D. farinosus and other crops. The herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is widely cultivated as an ornamental, medicinal and edible plant in China. Drought stress can seriously affect the growth of herbaceous peony and reduce its quality. In our previous research, a significantly differentially expressed gene, PM19L, was obtained in herbaceous peony under drought stress based on transcriptome analysis, but little is known about its function. In this study, the first PM19L that was isolated in herbaceous peony was comprised of 910 bp, and was designated as PlPM19L (OP480984). It had a complete open reading frame of 537 bp and encoded a 178-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of 18.95 kDa, which was located in the membrane. When PlPM19L was transferred into tobacco, the transgenic plants had enhanced tolerance to drought stress, potentially due to the increase in the abscisic acid (ABA) content and the reduction in the level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In addition, the enhanced ability to scavenge H2O2 under drought stress led to improvements in the enzyme activity and the potential photosynthetic capacity. These results combined suggest that PlPM19L is a key factor to conferring drought stress tolerance in herbaceous peony and provide a scientific theoretical basis for the following improvement in the drought resistance of herbaceous peony and other plants through genetic engineering technology. Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.), as the main tree species in northeast China, has important economic and ecological values. Currently, supplementary light has been widely used in plant cultivation projects. However, the studies about different supplementary light sources on the growth and development of Korean pine are few. In this study, the one with no supplementary light was used as the control, and two kinds of light sources were set up: light-emitting diode (LED) and incandescent lamp, to supplement light treatment of Korean pine. The spectrum and intensity of these two light sources were different. The results showed that the growth and physiological–biochemical indicators were significantly different under different supplementary light treatments. The biomass of supplementary light treatment was significantly lower than the control. Compared with the control, IAA and GA were lower, and JA, ABA, ZT, and ETH were higher under supplementary light conditions. Photosynthetic parameters in supplementary light conditions were significantly lower than the control. Supplemental light induces chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid accumulation. From RNA-seq data, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed in all the comparison groups, and there were 487 common DEGs. The expression levels of DEGs encoding transcription factors were also changed. According to GO and KEGG analysis, the plant hormone signal transduction, circadian rhythm-plant, and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways were the most enriched. Populus ussuriensis is an important and fast-growing afforestation plant species in north-eastern China. The whole-genome sequencing of P. ussuriensis has not been completed. Also, the transcriptional network of P. ussuriensis response to cold stress remains unknown. To unravel the early response of P. ussuriensis to chilling (3 °C) stress and freezing (−3 °C) stresses at the transcriptional level, we performed single-molecule real-time (SMRT) and Illumina RNA sequencing for P. ussuriensis. The SMRT long-read isoform sequencing led to the identification of 29,243,277 subreads and 575,481 circular consensus sequencing reads. Approximately 50,910 high-quality isoforms were generated, and 2272 simple sequence repeats and 8086 long non-coding RNAs were identified. The Ca2+ content and abscisic acid (ABA) content in P. ussuriensis were significantly increased under cold stresses, while the value in the freezing stress treatment group was significantly higher than the chilling stress treatment group. A total of 49 genes that are involved in the signal transduction pathways related to perception and transmission of cold stress signals, such as the Ca2+ signaling pathway, ABA signaling pathway and MAPK signaling cascade, were found to be differentially expressed. In addition, 158 transcription factors from 21 different families, such as MYB, WRKY and AP2/ERF, were differentially expressed during chilling and freezing treatments. Moreover, the measurement of physiological indicators and bioinformatics observations demonstrated the altered expression pattern of genes involved in reactive oxygen species balance and the sugar metabolism pathway during chilling and freezing stresses. This is the first report of the early responses of P. ussuriensis to cold stress, which lays the foundation for future studies on the regulatory mechanisms in cold-stress response. Camellia chekiangoleosa Hu. is a unique woody oil tree with significant economic and ornamental value in China, but the fruit is easily sunburned in low-altitude areas. However, few studies on their sunburn mechanism, especially the types and content of endogenous hormones with stress resistance, have not been reported, making it challenging to take reasonable preventive measures. Here, we analyzed the endogenous hormones before sunburn and found that salicylic acid (SA) and gibberellins (GAs) were very significantly correlated between pericarp and seed kernel. However, there weren't closely related to abscisic acid (ABA), auxin, jasmonic acids (JAs), and cytokinin. The content of indole-3-carboxylic acid (ICA) and 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) in the pericarp was higher than in seed kernel, and IBA was only found in the pericarp. GAs in seed kernel were higher than that in pericarp, and GA3 and GA15 may regulate pericarp development. Contents of trans-Zeatin (tZ), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and GAs in seed kernel and pericarp gradually decreased to very low, while ABA and indole-3-carboxaldehyde (ICAld) gradually increased. SA was positively correlated with ABA in pericarp and GAs and SA in seed kernel and pericarp. JAs in fruit generally showed a downward trend, and methyl jasmonate (ME-JA) appeared in pericarp. Aegilops tauschii Coss is one of the most hazardous weeds that severely infests wheat fields in China. The tillering ability of Ae. tauschii strongly affects the occurrence and spread by influencing its seed output. In this study, Ae. tauschii was sown at low plant density (LPD) and high plant density (HPD) to investigate the effect of plant density on tiller bud outgrowth and its potential regulators using RNA-Seq. Additionally, the chlorophyll content and photosynthesis, soluble sugar and phytohormone levels were also determined at different plant densities. The results showed that an increased plant density significantly inhibited the elongation of tiller buds in the axil of the first leaf at 15 days after planting, with 7.69 mm at LPD and 1.69 mm at HPD. A total of seven putative tiller-related genes were selected and validated using quantitative real-time PCR. Furthermore, chlorophyll levels, photosynthetic efficiency, and soluble sugar contents were distinctly inhibited by HPD in Ae. tauschii , which may be responsible for the restriction of tiller bud growth. In addition, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were markedly enriched in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), and gibberellin metabolism and signaling. Accordingly, the levels of ABA and gibberellin A3 in Ae. tauschii were strikingly higher at HPD compared with those at LPD, yet the reverse tendency was observed for IAA. Undoubtedly, such results will be highly beneficial for illuminating the underlying regulators of the Ae. tauschii tillering response to plant density and may provide new ideas for the control of this weed in the future. Attempts had been made to provide evidences insight into the pattern and physiological mechanism of sweet cherry fruit dropping. However, the fruit abscission pattern and mechanism underlying the heavy fruit dropping in insufficient chilling regions, especially the roles of interior factors including carbohydrates and hormones in abnormal fruit dropping, has not yet been better understood so far. Currently, four five-year-old sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivars, i.e., 'Santina', 'Brooks', 'Sparkerry' and 'Black Pearl', which were grown in Weining County (104.28° E, 26.86° N), Guizhou province of China, were used as materials to elucidate the physiological fruit abscission pattern of sweet cherry and the chief interior causes for the heavy fruit dropping in insufficient chilling region of China. It was explicated that the abscission pattern of sweet cherry fruit somewhat varied among the cultivars in a low chilling region. Higher rate of pollen germination and longer polar axis length was proved to be remarkably beneficial to fruit development. A comparative anatomic dissection of fruit stalk between the retention and dropped fruit elaborated that there is obvious difference in the microstructure with the progress of fruit development. The discrepancy was mostly showed by the cell space of abscission zone tissues for the dropped fruit enlarged gradually and was remarkably larger than that of the retention ones. Furthermore, the imbalance of endogenous hormones in fruit is a crucial trigger for fruit dropping with the progress of fruit development, particularly the active ZR, GA, as well as IAA levels in fruit are positively correlated to fruit setting, conversely, ABA played a negative role in fruit retention. Moreover, carbohydrate contents in retention fruit were considerably higher than that of the dropped ones during the fruit development, however, the contents of glucose and fructose in dropped fruit did not reach the required threshold which was possibly a vital cause leading to fruit abscission. 6‐Benzyladenine (6‐BA, a synthetic cytokinin) could improve the ability to resist adversity. However, very little attention has been given to its role in alleviating waterlogging damages on grain growth. A field experiment was performed to investigate effects of exogenous 6‐BA after waterlogging for 6 days at the third leaf stage (V3‐WL + 6‐BA) or the sixth leaf stage (V6‐WL + 6‐BA) on grain filling, and endogenous hormone of summer maize hybrids DengHai605 (DH605) and ZhengDan958 (ZD958), which were planted popularly in China. Exogenous 6‐BA alleviated waterlogging damages on grain filling by improving grain weight and volume, which was beneficial to yield increase. Grain yield of DH605 under V3‐WL + 6‐BA and V6‐WL + 6‐BA increased by 16% and 12%, respectively, compared with that of V3‐WL (waterlogging at the third leaf stage) and V6‐WL (waterlogging at the sixth leaf stage), while the corresponding values for ZD958 increased by 20% and 15%, respectively. Moreover, exogenous 6‐BA alleviated waterlogging damages on grain endogenous hormone content by increasing levels of endogenous indole‐3‐acetic acid, zeatin riboside, and gibberellic acid, and decreasing level of abscisic acid in grain of waterlogged summer maize during grain‐filling periods. Key message: CrCOMT, a COMT gene in Carex rigescens, was verified to enhance salt stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis. High salinity severely restricts plant growth and development while melatonin can alleviate salt damage. Caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) plays an important role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress responses. COMT could also participate in melatonin biosynthesis. The objective of this study was to identify CrCOMT from Carex rigescens (Franch.) V. Krecz, a stress-tolerant grass species with a widespread distribution in north China, and to determine its physiological functions and regulatory mechanisms that impart tolerance to salt stress. The results showed that the transcription of CrCOMT exhibited different expression patterns under salt, drought, and ABA treatments. Transgenic Arabidopsis with the overexpression of CrCOMT exhibited improved growth and physiological performance under salt stress, such as higher lateral root numbers, proline level, and chlorophyll content, than in the wild type (WT). Overexpression of CrCOMT also increased dehydration tolerance in Arabidopsis. The transcription of salt response genes was more highly activated in transgenic plants than in the WT under salt stress conditions. In addition, the melatonin content in transgenic plants was higher than that in the WT after stress treatment. Drought and nitrogen (N) deficiency are common factors that limit apple production in the Loess Plateau region of China. Different apple cultivars respond to drought and low N differently; however, the mechanism that underlies the difference in nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) under drought conditions is not well understood. In this study, by comparing the physiological responses of two apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) cultivars with contrasting NUE, 'Qinguan' (higher NUE) and 'Honeycrisp' (lower NUE), under low N and drought conditions, we discovered that, 'Qinguan' had larger stomatal apertures, higher chlorophyll fluorescence levels, more active N metabolism and antioxidant enzymes, higher abscisic acid and auxin concentrations, larger root size and more efficient N uptake mediated by higher expression of MdNRT2.4 in rootstock than that of 'Honeycrisp'. Additionally, we experimentally confirmed that MdNRT2.4 enhanced low N and osmotic stress tolerance in Arabidopsis when being overexpressed. Taken together, our findings shed light on the mechanism that underlies the difference in NUE of apple under drought and N-deficient conditionss and provide MdNRT2.4 as a candidate gene for future genetic engineering. Plants are often repeatedly exposed to stresses during their lives and have a mechanism called stress imprinting that provides "memories" of stresses they experience and increases their ability to cope with later stresses. To test hypotheses that primed bryophytes can preserve their stress imprinting after 6 days of recovery and induce higher levels of osmolytes and ROS‐scavenging activities upon later stress exposure, and there exist population‐level differentiation in their desiccation defenses, we transplanted samples of two populations of each of two moss species, Hypnum plumaeforme and Pogonatum cirratum, in a nature reserve in southern China. After 16 months of acclimation, sets of each population were subjected to control, one‐time desiccation stress, duplicated desiccation stress and cross‐stress (low temperature stress followed by desiccation stress) treatments. Levels of oxidant enzymes, osmolytes, and phytohormones in the samples were then determined. The desiccation stress generally led to increases in activities or contents of superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, catalase, proline, soluble sugars, soluble proteins, and stress hormones including abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonates (JA), and salicylic acid (SA), with differences between both species and populations. After a 6‐day recovery period, contents of phytohormones (including ABA, JA, SA, and cytokinins) in stressed H. plumaeforme had substantially fallen toward control levels. The duplicated and cross‐stress treatments generally led to further accumulation of proline, soluble sugars, and soluble proteins, with further increases in activities of antioxidant enzymes in some cases. Furthermore, significant differences between allochthonous and native populations were found in contents of malondialdehyde and osmolytes, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. Nitrogen (N), an essential macronutrient for crop growth and development, is well known for its economic losses and environmental hazards due to imbalanced application. Oat (Avena nuda L.), a food and fodder crop, is well adapted to marginal soils and requires minimum water and nutrients to produce biomass. A hydroponic experiment was conducted in China Agricultural University, Beijing, China to evaluate the morphological and physiological adaptations of oat to organic N (ON) and low N (LN) with respect to chemical N (CK as control). The results have shown that oat responded to different nitrogen supplies with response to LN having been the dominant one. Lowest SPAD value, net photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, gas exchange and stomatal conductance showed that the oat was under LN stress. Highest level of root dry mass, as indicated by increased R/S ratio and C/N ratio, was at the cost of minimum nitrogen utility as depicted by increased nitrogen utilization efficiency in roots under LN. Accumulation of total soluble proteins and sugars elaborated the carbon allocation to nitrogen deprived roots. As a result of sufficient biomass provision in LN root, total root length increased which was coupled with increased concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellic acid and zeatin riboside whereas decreased concentration of abscisic acid. Overall, oat is found to be a nitrogen use efficient crop which responded to LN through enhanced root system through biomass accumulation by the provision of nitrogen metabolites. Background: the cool-season grass Achnatherum inebrians (drunken horse grass) is an important species in the northwest grasslands of China. This grass engages in a symbiotic relationship with Epichloë endophytes, which affect host plants by increasing growth, repelling herbivores, and increasing tolerance to stressful environments. Methods: in this work, we evaluated the interaction effects of the endophyte on various dormancy-breaking treatments on A. inebrians seeds from six different locations. We used both endophyte-infected plants and noninfected plants and applied four dormancy-breaking methods to test germination. Results: our results showed that the germination rate of endophytic Achnatherum inebrians seeds from the Xiahe site (with highest altitude) was significantly higher than that from other sites when water soaking was applied (p < 0.05). Endophytic seeds had a greater germination rate, and soluble sugar, indole acetic acid (IAA), and gibberellin (GA) contents, under any condition. There was a significant interaction among the method, endophyte status, and origin regarding germination (p < 0.001); particularly, the effects of warm water soaking and endophyte infection on the germination of seeds from the Xiahe site was significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: the infection of Epichloë endophyte is able to increase the content of soluble sugar, IAA, and GA, and stimulate the seed germination of A. inebrians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the process of biological invasion, hybridization between invasive species and native species is very common, which may lead to the formation of hybrids with a stronger adaptability. The hybrid of Wedelia trilobata (an alien invasive species) and Wedelia chinensis (an indigenous congener) has been found in South China. In our previous study, we found that the hybrid showed heterosis under cadmium stress. However, the results of this experiment demonstrated that the leaves of the hybrid had no heterosis in controlling water loss. The results showed that the water loss rate of W. trilobata was the slowest, that of W. chinensis was the fastest, and that of the hybrid was in the middle. Compared with W. chinensis and the hybrid, W. trilobata accumulated more abscisic acid (ABA) in leaves to control water loss. After the leaves were detached, W. chinensis leaves suffered the most serious damage, the lowest maximum photochemical efficiency, the most serious membrane lipid peroxidation, and the largest accumulation of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species. Compared with W. chinensis and its hybrid, the leaves of W. trilobata could accumulate more antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants, and the total antioxidant capacity was the strongest. The results demonstrate that the ability of the hybrid to reduce water loss was lower than that of W. trilobata, but higher than that of W. chinensis. They showed that the drought resistance of the hybrid may be higher than that of W. chinensis, and it might threaten the survival of W. chinensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The drought resistance mechanism of Matteuccia struthiopteris (L.) Todar. and Athyrium multidentatum (Doll.) Ching were measured under natural drought exposure. The results showed that the two edible fern species showed stronger resistance in the early stages of drought, mainly expressed as the decrease of relative leaf water content (RLWC), increase of osmotic substances, secondary metabolites such as flavonoids (FC), total phenols (TPC), proantho cyanidins (PCC) content and enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX)). The higher RLWC, FC, TPC, PCC and abscisic acid (ABA) content and lower H2O2 content indicates the stronger non-enzymatic antioxidant system and drought resistance of A. multidentatum. However, the proline (Pro) content changed slowly, and the synthesis of soluble protein (SP), total phenols, proantho cyanidins and ABA, SOD activity of two fern species were inhibited in the late stages of drought stress.
