The Kois Dento-Facial Analyzer (KDFA) is used by clinicians to mount maxillary casts and to evaluate and treat patients. Limited information is available for understanding whether the KDFA should be considered as an alternative to an arbitrary facebow.The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate and compare maxillary casts mounted by using the KDFA with casts mounted by using the Panadent Pana-Mount Facebow (PMF) and a kinematic axis (KA) facebow.Fifteen participants were enrolled in the study. Three maxillary impressions were made of each study participant. One cast from each study participant was mounted on an articulator by means of the KDFA, PMF, and KA. A standardized photograph of each mounting was made, and the condylar center-incisor distance and the occlusal and incisal plane angles were measured. A randomized complete block design analysis of variance (RCBD) (α=.05) and post hoc tests (Tukey-Kramer HSD) were used to evaluate the occlusal and incisal plane angles and the condylar center-incisor distance.Compared with the occlusal plane angle (OPA), the KDFA mounted the maxillary cast at an angle that was statistically lower than those of PMF and KA (P.001). The KDFA and the PMF condylar center-incisor distances were both significantly greater than that of KA (P=.01). No differences were found between the incisal plane angle (IPA) on maxillary casts mounted with the KDFA, KA, or PMF (P=.16).The KDFA and PMF mounted the maxillary casts in a position that was farther from the axis when compared with the KA mounted casts. The KDFA resulted in a lower articulator OPA compared with both PMF and KA. No difference was found between the IPAs of the KDFA, PMF, and KA.

Background After experiencing an unexpected slip perturbation, individuals’ behavioral performance can be classified into three categories: recovery, feet-forward fall, and split fall. Researchers are uncertain whether these differences in slip outcomes are due to distinct strategies or part of a single strategy. Research question Whether older adults with different behavioral outcomes during their novel slip have different kinematic synergies? Methods The kinematic synergies were extracted from segment angles in 87 participants using principal component analysis (PCA). The first two principal components (PC1 and PC2) in pre-slip, early-reactive, and late-reactive phases were compared across different slip outcomes. Results Results showed that the kinematic synergies in pre-slip and early-reactive phases are highly consistent among the three outcomes (recovery, split fall, and feet-forward fall). For the late-reactive phase, both split falls and feet-forward falls showed different kinematics synergies from recoveries. Significance Our findings indicated that a single strategy might be used for different slip outcomes in the pre-slip and early-reactive phases, while distinct strategies were used by fallers compared to recovered individuals. Specifically, larger trunk flexion in pre-slip phase, larger knee flexion and plantar flexion of the slipping limb in both early-reactive and late-reactive phase, and larger knee extension of the recovery limb in late-reactive phase would lower the fall risk. This study would help to assess the vulnerabilities in control strategy, according to which individualized treatment could be provided to reduce predisposition to specific types of falls.

Introduction The efficiency of front kick is related to the kicking technique. Thus, the aim of this study was to find the kinematic determinants of front kick dynamics across different performance and loading levels (no load to 45-kg load). Materials and Methods Twenty-four elite and sub-elite professional military personnel (26.8 ± 10.1 years, 84.2 ± 5.4 kg, 181.1 ± 6.4 cm) performed six front kicks into a force plate across five different loading conditions. Three-dimensional kinematics of the kicks was quantified and included velocity of the hip (Vhip), velocity of the knee (Vknee), velocity of the shoulder (Vshoulder), velocity of the foot (Vfoot), angular velocity of the knee (AVknee), and angular velocity of the hip (AVhip). Results The main kinematic differences between the two groups were that the sub-elite group had an increased kick time for all loading conditions (P Conclusions The kinematic variables provide good predictions of kicking dynamics; however, the best predictor varies with the loading conditions and performance levels. Hip motion is the main differentiating factor.

PURPOSE To assess how biomechanical gait parameters (kinematics, kinetics, and muscle force estimations) differ between patients with cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and healthy controls, through a systematic search. METHODS A systematic review of the literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Medline and EMBASE via OVID SP was undertaken from inception to April 2020 using PRISMA guidelines. Studies that described kinematics, kinetics, and/or estimated muscle forces in cam-type FAI were identified and reviewed. RESULTS The search strategy identified 404 articles for evaluation. Removal of duplicates and screening of titles and abstracts resulted in full-text review of 37 articles, with 12 meeting inclusion criteria. The 12 studies reported biomechanical data on a total of 173 cam-FAI (151 cam-specific, 22 mixed-type) patients and 177 healthy age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched controls. Patients with cam FAI had reduced hip sagittal plane range of motion (mean difference -3.00° [-4.10, -1.90], P < .001), reduced hip peak extension angles (mean difference -2.05° [-3.58, -0.53] , P = .008), reduced abduction angles in the terminal phase of stance, and reduced iliacus and psoas muscle force production in the terminal phase of stance compared to the control groups. Cam FAI cohorts walked at a slower speed compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, patients with cam-type FAI exhibit altered sagittal and frontal plane kinematics as well as altered muscle force production during level gait compared to controls. These findings will help guide future research into gait alterations in FAI and how such alterations may contribute to pathologic progression and furthermore, how such alterations can be modified for therapeutic benefit. BACKGROUND: With the population aging, post-stroke patients suffering from hemiplegia are also rapidly increasing. It is essential to provide valid rehabilitation methods for hemiplegia patients. Mirror therapy is an effective rehabilitation method and is widely applied in many rehabilitation robots. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to present a path planning method to guarantee the robot’s motion performance during mirror therapy. METHODS: The kinematic framework of the proposed rehabilitation system is detailed, then the reference motion path of the manipulator is calculated according to kinematic transformation. The concept of manipulability is introduced to describe the motion performance of the manipulator. Based on the above work, a path planning method based on A* algorithm is proposed to quantitatively analyze and optimize the motion performance of the manipulator. RESULTS: Preliminary experiments with the proposed rehabilitation system are conducted to verify the proposed path planning method. The characteristics of the proposed method are analyzed through two typical situations. The results showed that the proposed method can build a new path for manipulator, which can ensure the robot’s motion performance and is highly consistent with the reference path. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the manipulator could achieve the task with acceptable error, which indicates the potential of the proposed path planning method for mirror therapy.

Recent developments suggest that autistic individuals require dynamic angry expressions to have a higher speed in order for them to be successfully identified. Therefore, it is plausible that autistic individuals do not have a 'deficit' in angry expression recognition, but rather their internal representation of these expressions is characterised by very high-speed movement. In this study, matched groups of autistic and non-autistic adults completed a novel emotion-based task which employed dynamic displays of happy, angry and sad point light facial (PLF) expressions. On each trial, participants moved a slider to manipulate the speed of a PLF stimulus until it moved at a speed that, in their 'mind's eye', was typical of happy, angry or sad expressions. Participants were shown three different types of PLFs-those showing the full-face, only the eye region, and only the mouth region, wherein the latter two were included to test whether differences in facial information sampling underpinned any dissimilarities in speed attributions. Across both groups, participants attributed the highest speeds to angry, then happy, then sad, facial motion. Participants increased the speed of angry and happy expressions by 41% and 27% respectively and decreased the speed of sad expressions by 18%. This suggests that participants have 'caricatured' internal representations of emotion, wherein emotion-related kinematic cues are over-emphasised. There were no differences between autistic and non-autistic individuals in the speeds attributed to full-face and partial-face angry, happy and sad expressions respectively. Consequently, we find no evidence that autistic adults possess atypically fast internal representations of anger.

To assess the repeatability and kinematic data of Modjaw® recordings from a group of asymptomatic patients.Modjaw® mandibular kinematic data were recorded for 22 asymptomatic volunteers (DC/TMD questionnaire). Sagittal (SCI at 3 and 5 mm) and transversal (TCI at 4 mm) condylar inclination values of the instantaneous center of rotation were measured over two recording sessions. The repeatability of recordings was determined from the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), which is based on a one-way random-effects ANOVA.The repeatability of recordings was found to be good to excellent. The mean TCI in mediotrusion was 7.1° ± 5.1, and the mean SCI in protrusion was 51.07° ± 9.43.The Modjaw® device reliably records the patient's real hinge axis kinematics during functional mandibular movements. Data can be transferred with the patient's personal reference plane and digital casts to the CAD/CAM software.

BACKGROUND: The post-cam mechanism in the posterior-stabilized (PS) implant plays an important role, such as durability and kinematic performances, in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in the kinematics and contact stress of five post-cam designs, which are flat-and-flat, curve-and-curve (concave), curve-and-curve (concave and convex), helical, and asymmetrical post-cam designs, using three-dimensional finite element models. METHODS: We designed the post-cam model with five different geometries. The kinematics, contact stress, and contact area were evaluated in the five post-cam designs under gait cycle loading conditions using the finite element method. RESULTS: There were no differences in the contact stress and area on the tibial insert in all designs. The largest internal rotation was shown in the swing phase for the helical design, and the largest tibial posterior translation was observed for the curve-and-curve (concave) design. The curve-and-curve (concave) design showed the lowest contact stress and the largest posterior tibial translation during the gait cycle. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the kinematics and contact stress, we found that the curve-and-curve (concave) design was more stable than other designs. From the results, we found the important factors of TKA implant considering stability and kinematics.

BACKGROUND: Although the instrument-assisted manual (IM) technique has been widely utilised to improve soft tissue and joint mobility, its therapeutic benefits and underlying neuromechanical mechanisms remain unknown compared to those of conventional static stretching (SS) and hold-relax (HR) manual techniques. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of the SS, HR, and IM techniques on muscle activity, kinematics, and strength during deep squatting in limited ankle dorsiflexion (DF) syndrome. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional randomised controlled study including 39 adults divided into three groups: SS group: 13, HR group: 13, IM group: 13. Outcome measures were the tibialis anterior (TA): gastrocnemius (GCM) balance ratio and ankle, knee, hip and thoracolumbar junction angles. TA muscle strength was analysed to evaluate the limited ankle DF. Analysis of variance was performed, with P< 0.05. RESULTS: The TA:GCM balance ratio, ranges of motion of ankle DF and knee flexion, and TA muscle strength in the IM group improved significantly compared to that in either the SS group or HR group (P< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our novel results demonstrated that IM was most effective in normalising TA:GCM balance, ankle DF range of motion, and TA muscle strength during deep squatting in adults with limited ankle DF.

The association of upper-body kinematics and earned run average of national collegiate athletic association Division I softball pitchers. J Strength Cond Res 35(11): 3145-3150, 2021-Although recent literature has increased examination of the association of injury and biomechanics, there remains a lack of evidence supporting optimal windmill pitch mechanics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate trunk and pitching arm kinematics and their association with performance outcome: earned run average (ERA), in collegiate softball pitchers. Twenty-three NCAA Division I collegiate softball pitchers (20.14 ± 1.07 years; 173.93 ± 6.68 cm; and 85.79 ± 11.06 kg) performed 3 maximal effort rise ball pitches to a catcher located at a distance of 43 ft. (13.11 m). Kinematic data of the trunk and pitching arm were collected using an electromagnetic tracking system. A multiple regression analysis was performed at each pitch event: top of backswing, foot contact, ball release, and follow-through. The multiple regression at foot contact showed an overall statistically significant regression equation (F6, 16 = 3.7, p = 0.017) and explained approximately 42% of the variance in ERA (R = 0.579, Adj. R2 = 0.421). Results revealed that those pitchers who had greater trunk (SE = 0.018, t = -2.5, p = 0.023) and elbow flexion (SE = 0.006, t = -4.2, p = 0.001) at the event of foot contact had lower ERAs. This study supported previous research on the importance of trunk and elbow angle at front foot contact on rise ball pitch performance. These key technique points and the importance of elbow flexors should be explored in future research and potentially visually attended to by coaches and strength professionals.

Context: Fatigue of the scapular stabilizing muscles resulting from repeated arm motion has been reported to alter scapular kinematics, which could result in shoulder pathology, especially impingement. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of fatigue of the serratus anterior muscle on scapular kinematics, specifically, decrease scapular posterior tilt and upward scapular rotation during arm elevation. Design: Repeated measures. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: Thirty participants were included in the investigation. Interventions: Scapular kinematics and shoulder strength were measured before and immediately following a serratus anterior fatigue protocol. Main Outcome: Scapular 3-dimensional position during arm elevation. Results: No difference in upward rotation of the scapula between prefatigue and postfatigue conditions (ascending: P = .188; descending: P = .798). Scapular posterior tilt decreased during arm elevation following the fatigue protocol between 60° and 90° and 90° and 120° of arm elevation during the ascent (P = .004) and the descent (P = .013). Fatigue by arm elevation angle interaction was found for clavicular elevation during the ascent (P = .050) between 90° and 120° of arm elevation. Scapular internal rotation increased during the ascent (P = .027). There was no difference in clavicular protraction between the prefatigue and postfatigue conditions (ascending: P ≤ .001; descending: P ≤ .001). Conclusion: Fatigue of the serratus anterior decreases posterior scapular tilt and greater clavicular elevation and scapular internal rotation at higher arm elevation angles. These findings are consistent with the scapular kinematic patterns associated with shoulder pain. Improving serratus anterior endurance might delay the changes in scapular kinematics associated with repeated arm motion and shoulder injury mechanisms.

BackgroundCam and/or pincer morphologies (CPM) are potential precursors to hip osteoarthritis (OA) and important contributors to non-arthritic hip pain. However, only some CPM hips develop OA and/or pain, and it is not clear why. Anterior impingement between the femoral head/neck contour and acetabular rim during motion is a proposed pathomechanism. Understanding how activity and deformity combine to produce impingement may shed light on the causes of hip degeneration/pain. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of a subject-specific hip model driven by subject-specific motion data in predicting anterior impingement.MethodsWe recruited 22 participants with CPM (both with and without pain) and 11 controls. We collected subject-specific 3D kinematics during squatting and sitting flexion, adduction, and internal rotation (FADIR) (an active and a passive maneuver, respectively, proposed to provoke impingement). We then developed 3D subject-specific hip models from supine 3T hip MRI scans that predicted the beta angle (a measure of anterior femoroacetabular clearance) for each frame of acquired kinematics. To assess the accuracy of these predictions, we measured the beta angle directly in the final position of squatting and sitting FADIR using open MRI scans. We selected the frame of motion data matching the static imaged posture using the least-squares error in hip angles. Model accuracy for each subject was calculated as the absolute error between the open MRI measure of beta and the model prediction of beta at the matched time frame. To make the final model accuracy independent of goodness of match between open MRI position and motion data, a threshold was set for least-squares error in hip angles, and only participants that were below this threshold were considered in the final model accuracy calculation, yielding results from 10 participants for squatting and 7 participants for sitting FADIR.ResultsFor squatting and sitting FADIR, we found an accuracy of 1.1°(0.8°) and 1.3°(mean (SD), and root mean squared error, respectively) and 0.5°(0.3°) and 0.6°, respectively.ConclusionThis subject-specific hip model predicts anterior femoroacetabular clearance with an accuracy of about 1°, making it useful to predict anterior impingement during activities measured with motion analysis.

Objectives Aim was to study the effect of monoski foot adjustment on kinematic and kinetic skiing parameters expressing sit skier’s technique. Design Independent variable was skier position with respect to bindings, acting on position of monoski foot sole clamp. Front (F), Mid (M) and Rear (R) settings changed with intervals of 20 mm. Course time, skiing speed, Ground Reaction Forces (GRFs) magnitude and point of application and damper stroke were dependent variables. Method A Paralympic monoski was equipped with a dynamometric binding plate measuring GRFs, roll and pitch moments. A Paralympic gold medalist (LW10-1) was involved. Skier trajectory and gates location were measured by a differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) in steep and medium steep slope portions. The athlete performed two giant slalom runs for each foot setting the same day. Results GRFs, center of pressure (COP) and variations with foot settings were measured. Peaks values up to 3.36 times the total weight and damper speed of 675 mm/s in compression were found. Fastest runs, highest peak loads and best subjective ratings were recorded with F setting. COP mean values were influenced by foot adjustments. GRFs in left turns were 54% larger than in the right turns with F setting on steep slope. Conclusions The monoski foot adjustment influenced kinematic and kinetic skiing, with F setting showing best results. A skier asymmetric behavior between right and left turning was discovered. Findings can support the design of monoskis for a wider dissemination of Paralympic alpine sit skiing.

Recent evidence suggests that during volitional stepping older adults control whole-body angular momentum (H) less effectively than younger adults, which may impose a greater challenge for balance control during this task in the elderly. This study investigated the influence of aging on the segment angular momenta and their contributions to H during stepping. Eighteen old and 15 young healthy adults were instructed to perform a series of stepping at two speed conditions: preferred and as fast as possible. Full-body kinematics were recorded to compute angular momenta of the trunk, arms and legs and their contributions to total absolute H on the entire stepping movement. Results indicated that older adults exhibited larger angular momenta of the trunk and legs in the sagittal plane, which contributed to a higher sagittal plane H range during stepping compared to young adults. Results also revealed that older adults had a greater trunk contribution and lower leg contribution to total absolute H in the sagittal plane compared to young adults, even though there was no difference in the other two planes. These results stress that age-related changes in H control during stepping arise as a result of changes in trunk and leg rotational dynamics.

The utility of machine learning in understanding the motor system is promising a revolution in how to collect, measure, and analyze data. The field of movement science already elegantly incorporates theory and engineering principles to guide experimental work, and in this review we discuss the growing use of machine learning: from pose estimation, kinematic analyses, dimensionality reduction, and closed-loop feedback, to its use in understanding neural correlates and untangling sensorimotor systems. We also give our perspective on new avenues, where markerless motion capture combined with biomechanical modeling and neural networks could be a new platform for hypothesis-driven research.

SUMMARYThe cyclic coordinate descent (CCD) method is a popular loop closure method in protein structure modeling. It is a robotics algorithm originally developed for inverse kinematic applications. We demonstrate an effective method of building the backbone of protein structure models using the principle of CCD and a guiding trace. For medium-resolution 3-dimensional (3D) images derived using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), it is possible to obtain guiding traces of secondary structures and their skeleton connections. Our new method, constrained cyclic coordinate descent (CCCD), builds α-helices, β-strands, and loops quickly and fairly accurately along predefined traces. We show that it is possible to build the entire backbone of a protein fairly accurately when the guiding traces are accurate. In a test of 10 proteins, the models constructed using CCCD show an average of 3.91 Å of backbone root mean square deviation (RMSD). When the CCCD method is incorporated in a simulated annealing framework to sample possible shift, translation, and rotation freedom, the models built with the true topology were ranked high on the list, with an average backbone RMSD100 of 3.76 Å. CCCD is an effective method for modeling atomic structures after secondary structure traces and skeletons are extracted from 3D cryo-EM images.

Riding simulators are designed to replicate movement of a horse for the purpose of assessment and training of horse riders, but little is known about their similarity in replicating movement of horses. This study tested the validity of a dressage simulator, by measuring cycle/stride duration, range and symmetry of displacement of the simulator and comparing displacement vectors to that of real horses trotting on a treadmill. A reflective marker was placed on the midline of the simulator at the estimated level of the 18th thoracic vertebrae (T18), and over the T18 spinous process of ten horses. The simulator displacement was recorded in trot mode, while the real horses trotted at a comfortable speed on a treadmill. Displacements in three axes of motion were measured using 10 high-speed video cameras sampling at 240 Hz. Correlation tests showed high levels of statistical repeatability and symmetry of the simulator between multiple runs. Mean cycle/stride duration of the simulator was significantly faster than the group of horses by 0.17 s. Significant differences between the simulator and horses were shown in overall displacement in two axes, the simulator displaying 70% greater displacement in the mediolateral axis, 22% greater displacement in the craniocaudal axis, but displaying 12% less movement in the dorsoventral axis, which was not statistically significant. Displacement trajectories showed similarities in the frontal plane, displaying a butterfly-shaped sequence, but clear differences in the sagittal plane, with the horses showing an oval pattern of displacement and the simulator a clear linear displacement. Caution must therefore be taken with assumptions that riders will move in the same way on a simulator as they would on a real horse.

BACKGROUND: The definition of rehabilitation training trajectory is of great significance during rehabilitation training, and the dexterity of human-robot interaction motion provides a basis for selecting the trajectory of interaction motion. OBJECTIVE: Aimed at the kinematic dexterity of human-robot interaction, a velocity manipulability ellipsoid intersection volume (VMEIV) index is proposed for analysis, and the dexterity distribution cloud map is obtained with the human-robot cooperation space. METHOD: Firstly, the motion constraint equation of human-robot interaction is established, and the Jacobian matrix is obtained based on the speed of connecting rod. Then, the Monte Carlo method and the cell body segmentation method are used to obtain the collaborative space of human-robot interaction, and the VMEIV of human-robot interaction is solved in the cooperation space. Finally, taking the upper limb rehabilitation robot as the research object, the dexterity analysis of human-robot interaction is carried out by using the index of the approximate volume of the VMEIV. RESULTS: The results of the simulation and experiment have a certain consistency, which indicates that the VMEIV index is effective as an index of human-robot interaction kinematic dexterity. CONCLUSIONS: The VMEIV index can measure the kinematic dexterity of human-robot interaction, and provide a reference for the training trajectory selection of rehabilitation robot.

J Strength Cond Res 35(9): 2622-2628, 2021-This investigation aimed to compare spinopelvic kinematics during rowing on an ergometer vs. in a rowing tank and to evaluate changes with progressing fatigue. Spinal and pelvic kinematics of 8 competitive scull rowers (19.0 ± 2.1 years, 179.9 ± 7.6 cm, and 74.8 ± 8.1 kg) were collected during 1 hour of rowing on an ergometer and in a rowing tank using a routine training protocol. Kinematics of the upper thoracic spine, lower thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and pelvis were determined using an infrared camera system (Vicon, Oxford, United Kingdom). There was a greater lumbar range of motion (ROM) and less posterior pelvic tilt at the catch during rowing on the ergometer compared with in the rowing tank (p = 0.001-0.048), but no differences in pelvic ROM. In the rowing tank, the pelvic ROM increased over time (p = 0.002) and the ROM of the lower thoracic spine decreased (p = 0.002). In addition, there was an extended drive phase (when the rower applies pressure to the oar levering the boat forward) and an abbreviated recovery phase (setting up the rower's body for the next stroke) in the rowing tank (p = 0.032). Different rowing training methods lead to differences in spinopelvic kinematics, which may lead to substantially different spinal loading situations. Greater pelvic rotation and lesser lumbar ROM are considered ideal; therefore, the present results indicate that rowing in the rowing tank might facilitate the maintenance of this targeted spinopelvic posture, which might help protect the lower back. Rowers, coaches, and researchers should consider the differences between rowing training methods, especially when giving training recommendations.

BackgroundVariability is a hallmark of animal behavior. It contributes to survival by endowing individuals and populations with the capacity to adapt to ever-changing environmental conditions. Intra-individual variability is thought to reflect both endogenous and exogenous modulations of the neural dynamics of the central nervous system. However, how variability is internally regulated and modulated by external cues remains elusive. Here we address this question by analyzing the statistics of spontaneous exploration of freely swimming zebrafish larvae, and by probing how these locomotor patterns are impacted when changing the water temperatures within an ethologically relevant range.ResultsWe show that, for this simple animal model, five short-term kinematic parameters - interbout interval, turn amplitude, travelled distance, turn probability and orientational flipping rate - together control the long-term exploratory dynamics. We establish that the bath temperature consistently impacts the means of these parameters, but leave their pairwise covariance unchanged. These results indicate that the temperature merely controls the sampling statistics within a well-defined kinematic space delineated by this robust statistical structure. At a given temperature, individual animals explore the behavioral space over a timescale of tens of minutes, suggestive of a slow internal state modulation that could be externally biased through the bath temperature. By combining these various observations into a minimal stochastic model of navigation, we show that this thermal modulation of locomotor kinematics results in a thermophobic behavior, complementing direct gradient-sensing mechanisms.ConclusionsThis study establishes the existence of a well-defined locomotor space accessible to zebrafish larvae during spontaneous exploration, and quantifies self-generated modulation of locomotor patterns. Intra-individual variability reflects a slow diffusive-like probing of this space by the animal. The bath temperature in turn restricts the sampling statistics to sub-regions, endowing the animal with basic thermophobicity. This study suggests that in Zebrafish, as well as in other ectothermic animals, ambient temperature could be used to efficiently manipulate internal states in a simple and ethological way.

Background The conventional gait model (CGM) is commonly utilised within clinical motion analysis but has a number of inherent limitations. To overcome some of these limitations modifications have been made to the CGM and six-degrees of freedom models (6DoF) have been developed. Research Question How comparable are lower limb kinematics calculated using modified CGM and 6DoF models and what is the error associated with the output of each model during walking? Methods Ten healthy males attended two gait analysis sessions, in which they walked at a self-selected pace, while a 10-camera motion capture system recorded lower limb kinematics. Hip, knee and ankle joint kinematics in all three anatomical planes were calculated using a modified CGM, with medial anatomical markers and a three-dimensional foot added, and 6DoF. Mean absolute differences were calculated on a point-by-point basis over the walking gait cycle and interpreted relative to a 5° threshold to explore the comparability of model outputs. The standard error of the measurement (SEM) was also calculated on a point-by-point basis over the walking gait cycle for each model. Results Mean absolute differences above 5° were reported between the two model outputs in 58–86% of the walking gait cycle at the knee in the frontal plane, and over the entire walking gait cycle at the hip and knee in the transverse plane. SEM was typically larger for the modified CGM compared to the 6DoF, with the highest SEM values reported at the knee in the frontal plane, and the hip and the knee in the transverse plane. Significance Caution should be taken when looking to compare findings between studies utilising modified CGM and 6DoF outside of the sagittal plane, especially at the hip and knee. The reduced SEM associated with the 6DoF suggests this modelling approach may be preferable.

Background Hip motion in the transverse plane is coupled with foot motion in the frontal plane during closed kinematic activities, such as gait. Considering that movement patterns and bone alignment might influence passive mechanical properties of joints in the long term, it is possible that hip passive stiffness and foot complex stiffness and alignment are related to each other. Objectives To investigate whether hip passive stiffness, midfoot passive stiffness and shank-forefoot alignment are related to each other. Method Thirty healthy adult individuals with a mean age of 25.4 years participated (18 women and 12 men). The Foot Torsimeter was used to measure midfoot stiffness, and hip stiffness and foot alignment were measured using clinical measures. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated to test the associations between each pair of variables, with α = 0.05. Results Hip stiffness was positively correlated with midfoot absolute stiffness (r = 0.41, p = 0.02), indicating that increased hip stiffness is associated with increased midfoot stiffness. There were no associations between shank-forefoot alignment and the other variables. Conclusions In clinical settings, individuals with reduced hip passive stiffness may also have reduced midfoot passive stiffness, and vice versa. Shank-forefoot alignment is not linearly associated with hip or midfoot passive stiffness.

The round house kick (RHK) is a common technique in taekwondo (TKD). The kicking action originates from the dynamic stability of the pivot leg. However, some knee injuries are caused by more difficult kicking strategies, such as kicks to the opponent’s head. This study analyses the effects on TKD players in the lower extremity kinematic and neuromuscular reactions from different kicking heights. This study recruited 12 TKD players (age = 20.3 ± 1.3 years, height = 1.72 ± 0.09 m, mass = 62.17 ± 9.45 kg) with no previous lower extremity ligament injuries. All athletes randomly performed 3 RHK at different heights (head, chest, and abdomen), repeating each kick 5 times. During the RHK action, the kinematics and muscle activations of the pivot leg were collected using six high-speed cameras and electromyography devices. The results found that during the RHK return period a high kicking position demonstrated larger knee valgus with the straight knee, and more hamstring activation on the pivot leg. The RHK pivot foot for TKD players encountered more risk of injury from high target kicking. The hamstring muscle played an important stabilizing role. It is recommended that sports medicine clinicians or sports coaches use this information to provide further protective injury prevention strategies.

Background Lower limb assistive devices have been developed to help amputees or stroke patients. To precisely mimic the required function, researchers focused on how to estimate/predict the required knee angle for knee devices. Research question The objective is to estimate the motion of the human knee joint during walking using the kinematics of wearer’s thigh measured by a single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The hypotheses are that the proposed method can precisely estimate knee angle and have good universality on different subjects, speeds and strides. Method 8 healthy subjects walked on the level ground at three different speeds. An IMU mounted on the thigh was employed to collect the kinematic information of the thigh including angular velocities and accelerations. A long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network model was adopted to model intra-limb synergy between the motion of thigh and the knee joint. Such that with the trained LSTM model, the knee angle can be precisely predicted. Results Compared with the existing studies, the proposed approach based on an LSTM model has better estimation performance. The average RMSE for eight subjects can be limited to 3.89°. The proposed method has speed and stride adaptability. Significance The proposed method is promising to generate a desired and harmonious knee trajectory in line with thigh motion for assistive robotic devices.

The asymmetry in bilateral teleoperation, i.e., the differences of mechanical structures, sizes, and number of joints between the master and slave robots, can introduce kinematicsr edundancy and workspace inequality problems. In this article, a novel shared autonomy control strategy is proposed for handling the asymmetry of bilateral teleoperation, which has two main contributions. First, to deal with kinematics redundancy, the proposed strategy provides a self-regulation algorithm of orientation that allows the operator to solely use the master position command to simultaneously control the slave’s position and orientation. Second, to deal with workspace inequality, the proposed strategy enables the slave’s workspace to be dynamically tunable to adapt to various task spaces without influencing the smoothness of the robot’s movement. Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) on sprint performance (i.e., 5, 10 and 20 m) and explore associations between study characteristics and sprint outcomes in team sport players. Secondary aims were to (1) investigate the effects of the NHE on eccentric strength of the knee flexors (ESKF) with categorical subgroup analysis to determine differences between recreationally, well-trained individuals and young athletes, (2) determine the relation between ESKF and sprint performance in team sport players, and (3) explore the effect of study characteristics (i.e., weekly volume, time duration and body mass) on ESKF.Methods: Electronic databases were searched until the 20th of June 2020. 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to determine the mean difference (MD) or standardized change of mean difference (SCMD) between NHE and control group for sprint time and ESKF, respectively.Results: NHE interventions showed a positive effect on sprint performance (-0.04 s [-0.08, -0.01]). Sub-group meta-analyses indicated no significant differences in 5 and 20 m sprint performance (MDsprint(5m)= -0.02 s [-0.10, 0.06]) and (MD (sprint(20m))= -0.05 s [-0.30, 0.19]), respectively. A significant difference was however found for 10 m sprint performance (MDsprint(10m) = -0.06 s [-0.10, -0.01]). Meta-analysis on the effects of the NHE on ESKF showed a significant benefit of 0.83 SCMD [0.55, 1.12] in favour of the intervention group.Conclusions: Studies with some concerns or high risk of bias show that training programs involving the NHE can have small beneficial effects on sprint performance in team sport players. Studies with some concerns or high risk of bias showed moderate beneficial effects on ESKF among a sample of relatively untrained individuals. However, for well-trained team sport players, the improvements in ESKF were less consistent, suggesting a higher training intensity during the NHE may be required to induce adaptations. OBJECTIVES: Task-specific movement training is a proposed intervention for patellofemoral pain aimed to optimise movement during daily tasks. Focused, progressive task practice emphasising optimal limb alignment may yield improvements in performance-based function and hip muscle strength, and transfer learnt movement patterns to untrained tasks. The purpose of this study was to determine if task-specific movement training improves performance-based function (composite score, movement, pain during movement) in an untrained task. Our secondary purpose was to test whether hip muscle strength improved following the movement training intervention. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a prospective, non-randomised, within-group, double-baseline study. Twenty-three females with patellofemoral pain underwent task-specific movement training two times/week for 6 weeks. Outcomes were collected at three time points: enrolment (baseline), 6 weeks (preintervention) and 12 weeks (postintervention). A repeated measures analysis of variance tested whether the change during the intervention phase was greater than the change during the control phase. Y-balance composite score, hip and knee kinematics and pain during the Y-balance test were primary outcome measures; strength of the hip lateral rotator, abductor and extensor muscles was a secondary outcome measure. RESULTS: The change in composite score for the Y-balance test was not statistically significantly different between the intervention and control phases (p=0.16). The aims of this study were to i) evaluate proximal-to-distal sequencing (PDS) in pianists’ attack and release movements during pressed-staccato keystrokes, and ii) investigate if trunk motion facilitates PDS of upper-limb movements. Nine expert pianists performed a series of loud pressed-staccato keystrokes. Kinematic data was recorded with a 3 D motion capture system. PDS was assessed by comparing temporal organization of peak velocities from the pelvis to the wrist. Evidence of PDS was found across the kinematic chain. Pianists’ use of PDS differed mainly between scapula and shoulder movements. Trunk motion facilitated PDS by increasing anticipatory shoulder movements and by preceding shoulder-girdle attack and release movements. Implications might relate to research on performance optimization and injury prevention strategies.

Background: Impairments in squat depth have been reported in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). However, little is known about single-leg squat (SLS) performance in these patients, despite this task being commonly used in the rehabilitation and training settings. Purpose/Hypothesis: The aims of this study were (1) to investigate whether patients with FAIS demonstrate differences in SLS performance compared with healthy controls and (2) to determine whether dynamic range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, hip morphologic measures, hip pain, and hip-specific function predict SLS performance in patients with FAIS. We hypothesized that patients with FAIS would demonstrate impaired SLS performance and that impaired hip biomechanics, muscle strength, and hip-specific function would predict squat performance in patients with FAIS. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Three-dimensional (3D) kinematic data were collected at 100 Hz using a 20-camera 3D motion capture system during 3 SLS trials in 34 patients with FAIS and 26 healthy controls. Isometric muscle strength was tested with a stationary handheld dynamometer in all participants. Squat performance was quantified by squat depth (in meters), and the biomechanical variables of dynamic ROM of the pelvis, the hip, the knee, and the ankle in all planes were calculated. In patients with FAIS, femoral and acetabular morphology were measured using radiographic alpha angles and lateral center-edge angles. Hip pain and hip-specific function were measured using the visual analog scale for pain and the Hip Outcome Score Activities of Daily Living subscale, respectively. Two-tailed independent-samples t tests were used to determine between-group differences for squat depth, dynamic ROM variables, and muscle strength. A hierarchical multiple linear regression (MLR) model was used to determine whether biomechanical variables, muscle strength, hip morphology measures, hip pain, and hip-specific function were predictors of squat depth. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS Version 26. Results: There were no between-group differences in age (FAIS, 30.0 ± 7.0 years vs controls, 27.3 ± 7.0 years; P = .18) or body mass index (FAIS, 23.1 ± 2.8 vs controls, 22.6 ± 3.2; P = .51). Squat depth was less in patients with FAIS compared with healthy controls (FAIS, 0.24 ± 0.4 m vs controls, 0.29 ± 0.05 m; P < .001). In the sagittal plane, patients with FAIS demonstrated less dynamic ROM of the hip (FAIS, 67.8°± 12.4° vs controls, 79.2°± 12.5°; P = .001) and the knee (FAIS, 71.9°± 9.4° vs controls, 78.9°± 13.2°; P = .02) compared with controls. Patients with FAIS also demonstrated a less dynamic coronal plane pelvis ROM (FAIS, 11.3°± 5.0° vs controls, 14.4°± 6.7°; P = .044). Patients with FAIS had reduced hip muscle strength of the hip external rotator (FAIS, 1 ± 0.3 N/kg vs controls, 1.2 ± 0.3 N/kg; P = .034), hip internal rotator (FAIS, 0.8 ± 0.3 N/kg vs controls 1 ± 0.3 N/kg; P = .03), and hip flexor (FAIS, 4 ± 1.1 N/kg vs controls, 4.8 ± 1.2 N/kg; P = .013) muscle groups. The hierarchical MLR revealed that the dynamic ROM of the hip, the knee, and the pelvis, the hip external rotation muscle strength, and the femoral alpha angles were all significant predictors of squat performance, and the final MLR model explained 92.4% of the total variance in squat depth in patients with FAIS. Conclusion: Patients with FAIS demonstrate impaired SLS squat performance compared with healthy controls. This impaired squat performance is predominantly predicted by sagittal plane knee and hip biomechanics and hip external rotator strength, and less by frontal plane pelvic ROM and hip morphology in patients with FAIS. Clinical Relevance: Clinicians should focus treatment on improving dynamic ROM and hip external rotator muscle strength to improve squat performance; however, femoral morphology should also be considered in the treatment paradigm.

Pelvic drop is caused by decreased hip abductor muscle activity and is associated with lower-extremity injury. Hip abductor strengthening exercises are well established; however, no standard method exists to increase hip abductor activity during functional activities. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of walking with a unilateral weight. A total of 26 healthy adults walked on an instrumented treadmill with and without handheld weight (15%–20% body weight). Muscle activity, kinematic, and kinetic data were collected using surface electromyography, motion capture, and force plates, respectively. Average hip and trunk muscle activity, hip, pelvic, and trunk angles, and peak internal hip moments during stance were compared for each side (contralateral/ipsilateral to the weight) between conditions (unweighted/weighted) using a generalized linear model with generalized estimating equation correction. Interactions between condition and side were observed for muscle activity, frontal plane pelvic and trunk angles, and frontal plane hip moments (P ≤ .003). Compared with the unweighted condition, the weighted condition had higher hip abductor activity contralateral to the weight (P P ≥ .790). Similar changes were found for kinematic and kinetic variables. Walking with a unilateral weight may be a therapeutic option to increase functional hip abductor activity.

Gait analysis provides an important tool for the study and clinical evaluation of conditions which affect knee joint biomechanics. Collection of knee joint kinematics in real world environments during locomotor activities of daily living could provide quantitative evidence to help understand functional impairment. Unfortunately, the high cost and necessary technical expertise associated with current commercially available systems for kinematic monitoring serve as an impediment to their adoption outside of specialized research groups. We have developed a low-cost, custom wearable device to address these shortcomings. The 3D printed device is capable of measuring knee flexion/extension (F/E) and adduction/abduction (AD/AB) angles. Here, we present a gold standard validation of the novel device against an optoelectronic motion capture system (MCS). Data were collected during a treadmill walking task from 8 participants on 2 separate occasions. Agreement with the MCS was quantified via root mean squared error (RMSE), coefficients of multiple correlation (CMC), paired dependent t -tests and Bland-Altman analyses. The wearable device had an overall RMSE of 3.0 ° and 2.7 ° and a CMC of 0.97 and 0.91 in F/E and AD/AB respectively. Wearable device error showed no significant differences between test occasions, and Bland-Altman analyses showed low bias with narrow limits of agreement. These results demonstrate the capability of the device to accurately and reliably monitor knee F/E and AD/AB angles showing strong potential for field implementation.

Because nerve injury of muscles around the shoulder can be easily disguised by "trick movements" of the trunk, shoulder dysfunction following brachial plexus injury is difficult to quantify with conventional clinical tools. Thus, to evaluate brachial plexus injury and quantify its biomechanical consequences, we used inertial measurement units, which offer the sensitivity required to measure the trunk's subtle movements.We calculated 6 kinematic scores using inertial measurement units placed on the upper arms and the trunk during 9 functional tasks. We used both statistical and machine learning techniques to compare the bilateral asymmetry of the kinematic scores of 15 affected and 15 able-bodied individuals (controls).Asymmetry indexes from several kinematic scores of the upper arm and trunk showed a significant difference (P.05) between the affected and control groups. A bagged ensemble of decision trees trained with trunk and upper arm kinematic scores correctly classified all controls. All but 2 patients were also correctly classified. Upper arm scores showed correlation coefficients ranging from 0.55-0.76 with conventional clinical scores.The proposed wearable technology is a sensitive and reliable tool for objective outcome evaluation of brachial plexus injury and its biomechanical consequences. It may be useful in clinical research and practice, especially in large cohorts with multiple follow-ups.

There is a lack of evidence about the ways in which balance ability influences the kinematic and kinetic parameters and muscle activities during gait among healthy individuals. The hypothesis is that balance ability would be associated with the lower limb kinematics, kinetics and muscle activities during gait. Twenty-nine healthy volunteers (Age 32.8 ± 9.1, 18 males and 11 females) performed a Star Excursion Balance test to measure their dynamic balance and walked for at least three trials in order to obtain a good quality of data. A Vicon® 3D motion capture system and AMTI® force plates were used for the collection of the movement data. The selected muscle activities were recorded using Delsys® Electromyography (EMG). The EMG activities were compared using the maximum values and root mean squared (RMS) values within the participants. The joint angle, moment, force and power were calculated using a Vicon Plug-in-Gait model. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression analysis were performed using SPSS version 23. In the muscle activities, positive linear correlations were found between the walking and balance test in all muscles, e.g., in the multifidus (RMS) (r = 0.800 p &lt, 0.0001), vastus lateralis (RMS) (r = 0.639, p &lt, 0.0001) and tibialis anterior (RMS) (r = 0.539, p &lt, 0.0001). The regression analysis models showed that there was a strong association between balance ability (i.e., reaching distance) and the lower limb muscle activities (i.e., vastus medialis–RMS) (R = 0.885, p &lt, 0.0001), and also between balance ability (i.e., reaching distance) and the lower limb kinematics and kinetics during gait (R = 0.906, p &lt, 0.0001). In conclusion, the results showed that vastus medialis (RMS) muscle activity mainly contributes to balance ability, and that balance ability influences the lower limb kinetics and kinematics during gait.

Background: In the throwing elbow, increased elbow torque has been correlated with increased injury risk. Additional insight into the relationships between anthropometric factors and elbow joint loading is warranted. Purpose: To investigate the relationship among physical limb length characteristics, elbow kinetics, and elbow kinematics in youth baseball pitchers and to examine the relationship between elbow varus loading rate and elbow kinetics. Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: A total of 27 male youth baseball pitchers participated (mean ± SD: age, 15.8 ± 2.7 years; height, 176.3 ± 13.0 cm; weight, 71.7 ± 16.4 kg). Upper arm (UA) and forearm (FA) lengths were measured using a moveable sensor to digitize bony landmarks. Kinematic data were collected at 240 Hz using an electromagnetic tracking system. Participants threw 3 fastballs to a catcher at a regulation distance (60 ft 6 in), and the fastest velocity trial was used for analysis. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship among limb length characteristics, elbow kinetics, and elbow kinematics after accounting for the effects of body weight and height. Results: Pitchers with longer UA length experienced increased maximum elbow varus torque ( P = .005) and maximum net elbow force ( P = .001). Pitchers with an increased forearm to UA ratio had decreased elbow compression force ( P < .001) and exhibited a more flexed elbow at foot contact ( P = .001). Pitchers with greater maximum loading rates experienced greater elbow varus torque ( P = .002). Conclusion: In youth baseball pitchers, longer UA length and greater loading rate increase varus torque about the elbow during a fastball pitch. Clinical Relevance: Longer UA length and greater loading rate may place pitchers at risk of injury because of their relationship with kinetic values.

The underwater phase is perhaps the most important phase of the swimming start. To improve performance during the underwater phase, it is necessary to improve our understanding of the key variables affecting this phase. The main aim of this study was to identify key kinematic variables that are associated with the performance of an underwater glide of a swimming start, when performed at streamlined position without underwater undulatory swimming. Sixteen experienced swimmers performed 48 track starts and 20 kinematic variables were analysed. A multiple linear regression analysis was carried out to explore the relationship between glide performance (defined as glide distance) and the variables that may affect glide performance. Four variables in the regression model were identified as good predictors of glide distance: flight distance; average velocity between 5 m and 10 m; and maximum depth of the hip. The results of the present study help improve our understanding of underwater glide optimisation and could potentially facilitate improvement of overall start performance. pre-print 153 KB

The present review deals with the current scientific knowledge related with ski jump landing. A specific focus is given on the landing biomechanics, the methods utilized for its analysis and the injuries connected to the landing phase. Despite the demonstrated importance for the safety and the performance of ski jumpers, the landing and its preparation are rarely investigated. In this paper, after having firstly described the execution of landing and its preparation and the reason why is important to analyze it, an overview of the current status of the research related to the landing biomechanics is reported (kinetics, kinematics, electromyographic activation, aerodynamics, computer simulation). The third part describes the methods and technologies utilized in literature to analyze the landing and its preparation (video cameras, inertial sensors, force insoles, wind tunnel and computer simulation). After that, an overview of the injuries related to landing is reported. The final section proposes future research in the field of biomechanics of ski jump landing in different fields, such as computer simulations, kinematic analysis, equipment development and biomechanics of female athletes.

This study explored the relationship between single motor unit (MU) firing rates (FRs) and limb movement velocity during voluntary shortening contractions when accounting for the effects of time course variability between different kinematic comparisons. Single MU trains recorded by intramuscular electromyography in agonist muscles of the anconeus (n = 15 participants) and lateral head of the triceps brachii (n = 6) were measured during each voluntary shortening contraction. Elbow extension movements consisted of a targeted velocity occurring along the sagittal plane at 25, 50, 75 and 100% of maximum velocity. To account for the effect of differences in contraction time course between parameters, each MU potential was time locked throughout the shortening muscle contraction and linked with separated kinematic parameters of the elbow joint. Across targeted movement velocities, instantaneous FRs were significantly correlated with elbow extension rate of torque development (r = 0.45) and torque (r = 0.40), but FRs were not correlated with velocity (r = 0.03, p = n.s.). Instead, FRs had a weak indirect relationship with limb movement velocity and position assessed through multiple correlation of the stepwise kinematic progression. Results show that voluntary descending synaptic inputs correspond to a more direct relationship between agonist muscle FRs and torque during shortening contractions, but not velocity. Instead, FRs were indirectly correlated to preparing the magnitude of imminent movement velocity of the lagging limb through torque.

This review article summarized the literature regarding running gait. It describes characteristics of running gait and running gait cycle, explains running anatomy in relation to lower and upper body mechanism; contribution of muscles, and joint running gait cycle. The concept of running kinematics and kinetics has described motion characteristics such as position, velocity, acceleration, and force applied during the running cycle. Running gait analysis techniques has discussed such as motion analysis, force plate analysis, and electromyography.

Arm movements make a substantial and functionally relevant contribution to quiet standing and dynamic balance tasks. The impact of restricted arm movements on balance control is particularly important for children as their postural control system is not fully matured.This study investigated the effects of arm movements on lower body joint kinematics and dynamic postural stability during anterior and lateral dynamic movements in children.Eighteen boys (age, 10.1 ± 1.6 years) completed an anterior and a lateral jump-landing task under two different verbally conveyed instructions of arm position; (1) arms placed flat across the chest touching the contralateral shoulder (i.e., restricted arm movement) and (2) arm movement without restriction. Lower body joint kinematics were recorded and used to calculate mean joint position, joint range of motion (ROM) and joint movement variability.Restricting arm movements resulted in a reduction of joint movement variability and joint ROM of the pelvis during the lateral jump (p0.05), but increased joint movement variability and joint ROM of the pelvis during the anterior jump (p0.05).The reduced joint movement variability and joint ROM with restricted arm movements during the lateral jump may represent a potential compensatory 'stiffenin strategy', whilst the increase during the anterior jump suggest an exploratory strategy. These novel findings highlight that it is important for children to be introduced to different dynamic task constraints so that they can learn to control and organise the motor system degrees of freedom appropriately.

Background Knee injuries often occur during or shortly after marathon running, and are linked to altered knee kinematics. Research question The kinematics of healthy knees during pre- and post-marathon running have not been examined with high-speed fluoroscopy. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of marathon running on knee kinematics during walking and running by using a combined high-speed fluoroscopy and MRI technique. Methods Ten healthy runners underwent knee MRI within 24 h before marathon running to construct three-dimensional (3D) knee models. Knee kinematics during treadmill walking and running were evaluated using high-speed fluoroscopy (200hz) within 24 h before and as soon as possible (within 5 h) after marathon running. All pre- and post-marathon measurements were compared. Results (1) For post-marathon walking, posterior femoral translation increased 1.4 mm at initial contact (p = 0.015); proximal-distal distance of tibia and femur decreased 0.7 mm and 0.8 mm at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.039, p = 0.046); and valgus femur rotation increased 1.2° after contact (p = 0.027). (2) For post-marathon running, proximal-distal distance decreased 0.7 mm and 1.0 mm at initial contact and after contact (p = 0.011, p = 0.003) respectively; knee flexion decreased 4.3° before contact (p = 0.007); knee flexion increased 1.8° and 2.6° at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.038, p = 0.011); external femoral rotation increased 1.2° and 1.8° at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.012, p = 0.037). Valgus femoral rotation after contact increased 2.3° (p = 0.001). Significance Post-marathon changes in valgus and external femoral rotation, knee flexion, posterior femoral translation, and proximal-distal distance may increase the risk of knee injury. This study provides information to better understand the response of the knee to marathon running.

Robust locomotion is critical to many species' survival, yet the mechanisms by which efficient locomotion is learned and maintained are poorly understood. In mice, a common paradigm for assaying locomotor learning is the rotarod task, in which mice learn to maintain balance atop of an accelerating rod. However, the standard metric for learning in this task is improvements in latency to fall, which gives little insight into the rich kinematic adjustments that accompany locomotor learning. In this study, we developed a rotarod-like task called the RotaWheel in which changes in paw kinematics are tracked using high-speed cameras as mice learn to stay atop an accelerating wheel. Using this device, we found that learning was accompanied by stereotyped progressions of paw kinematics that correlated with early, intermediate, and late stages of performance. Within the first day, mice sharpened their interlimb coordination using a timed pause in the forward swing of their forepaws. Over the next several days, mice reduced their stride length and took shorter, quicker steps. By the second week of training, mice began to use a more variable locomotor strategy, where consecutive overshoots or undershoots in strides were selected across paws to drive forward and backward exploration of the wheel. Collectively, our results suggest that mouse locomotor learning occurs through multiple mechanisms evolving over separate time courses and involving distinct corrective actions. These data provide insights into the kinematic strategies that accompany locomotor learning and establish an experimental platform for studying locomotor skill learning in mice.

Background Transfemoral amputation is a serious intervention that alters the locomotion pattern, leading to secondary disorders and reduced quality of life. The outcomes of current gait rehabilitation for TFAs seem to be highly dependent on factors such as the duration and intensity of the treatment and the age or etiology of the patient. Although the use of robotic assistance for prosthetic gait rehabilitation has been limited, robotic technologies have demonstrated positive rehabilitative effects for other mobility disorders and may thus offer a promising solution for the restoration of healthy gait in TFAs. This study therefore explored the feasibility of using a bilateral powered hip orthosis (APO) to train the gait of community-ambulating TFAs and the effects on their walking abilities. Methods Seven participants (46–71 years old with different mobility levels) were included in the study and assigned to one of two groups (namely Symmetry and Speed groups) according to their prosthesis type, mobility level, and prior experience with the exoskeleton. Each participant engaged in a maximum of 12 sessions, divided into one Enrollment session, one Tuning session, two Assessment sessions (conducted before and after the training program), and eight Training sessions, each consisting of 20 minutes of robotically assisted overground walking combined with additional tasks. The two groups were assisted by different torque-phase profiles, aiming at improving symmetry for the Symmetry group and at maximizing the net power transferred by the APO for the Speed group. During the Assessment sessions, participants performed two 6-min walking tests (6mWTs), one with (Exo) and one without (NoExo) the exoskeleton, at either maximal (Symmetry group) or self-selected (Speed group) speed. Spatio-temporal gait parameters were recorded by commercial measurement equipment as well as by the APO sensors, and metabolic efficiency was estimated via the Cost of Transport (CoT). Additionally, kinetic and kinematic data were recorded before and after treatment in the NoExo condition. Results The one-month training protocol was found to be a feasible strategy to train TFAs, as all participants smoothly completed the clinical protocol with no relevant mechanical failures of the APO. The walking performance of participants improved after the training. During the 6mWT in NoExo, participants in the Symmetry and Speed groups respectively walked 17.4% and 11.7% farther and increased walking speed by 13.7% and 17.9%, with improved temporal and spatial symmetry for the former group and decreased energetic expenditure for the latter. Gait analysis showed that ankle power, step width, and hip kinematics were modified towards healthy reference levels in both groups. In the Exo condition metabolic efficiency was reduced by 3% for the Symmetry group and more than 20% for the Speed group. Conclusions This study presents the first pilot study to apply a wearable robotic orthosis (APO) to assist TFAs in an overground gait rehabilitation program. The proposed APO-assisted training program was demonstrated as a feasible strategy to train TFAs in a rehabilitation setting. Subjects improved their walking abilities, although further studies are required to evaluate the effectiveness of the APO compared to other gait interventions. Future protocols will include a lighter version of the APO along with optimized assistive strategies.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of static and dynamic hamstring muscles stretching on kinematics and esthetics of grand battement (high velocity kicks) in adolescent recreational dancers. Sixteen participants were assessed before and immediately after both stretching modalities. Kinematics of movement was measured by an optoelectronic system and esthetics was scored by a jury of professional dancers. Both stretching modalities led to significant kinematic differences compared with without stretching. Significant linear correlations between kinematic parameters and esthetic scores have been observed: improving dancers’ physical performances has noticeable impact on the perception of their movements.

Background Recently, machine learning techniques have been applied to data collected from inertial measurement units to automatically assess balance, but rely on hand-engineered features. We explore the utility of machine learning to automatically extract important features from inertial measurement unit data for balance assessment. Findings Ten participants with balance concerns performed multiple balance exercises in a laboratory setting while wearing an inertial measurement unit on their lower back. Physical therapists watched video recordings of participants performing the exercises and rated balance on a 5-point scale. We trained machine learning models using different representations of the unprocessed inertial measurement unit data to estimate physical therapist ratings. On a held-out test set, we compared these learned models to one another, to participants’ self-assessments of balance, and to models trained using hand-engineered features. Utilizing the unprocessed kinematic data from the inertial measurement unit provided significant improvements over both self-assessments and models using hand-engineered features (AUROC of 0.806 vs. 0.768, 0.665). Conclusions Unprocessed data from an inertial measurement unit used as input to a machine learning model produced accurate estimates of balance performance. The ability to learn from unprocessed data presents a potentially generalizable approach for assessing balance without the need for labor-intensive feature engineering, while maintaining comparable model performance.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Radiographic evaluation in adult spinal deformity (ASD) offers no information on spinopelvic alignment and compensation during dynamic conditions. Motion analysis offers the potential to bridge the gap between static radiographic and dynamic alignment measurement, increasing our understanding on how ASD impacts function. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the changes in sagittal alignment and compensation strategies in ASD between upright standing and walking, compared to control subjects and within different sagittal alignment groups. Ten patients were measured pre- and six months postoperatively to explore the impact of surgical alignment correction on gait. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. SAMPLE SIZE: Full protocol: 58 ASD and 20 controls; Spinal kinematic analysis: 43 ASD and 18 controls; Postoperative analysis: 10 ASD. OUTCOME MEASURES: Standing and walking sagittal spinopelvic (thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), pelvis), and lower limb kinematics, spinopelvic changes between standing and walking (∆ ie, difference between mean dynamic and static angle), lower limb kinetics, spatiotemporal parameters, balance (BESTest), patient-reported outcome scores (SRS-22r, ODI, and FES-I) and radiographic parameters. METHODS: Motion analysis was used to assess the standing and walking spinopelvic and lower limb kinematics, as well as the lower limb kinetics during walking. All parameters were compared between controls and patients with ASD, divided in three groups based on their sagittal alignment (ASD 1: decompensated sagittal malalignment; ASD 2: compensated sagittal malalignment; ASD 3: scoliosis and normal sagittal alignment). Objectives To determine the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of frontal and sagittal plane landing kinematic measures during drop jump (DVJ) and tuck jump (TJA) tasks in male youth soccer players, to assess the concurrent validity between DVJ and TJA tests, and to evaluate the ability of both tasks to detect differences between players’ stage of maturation. Design Cross-sectional study. Participants 223 male youth soccer players. Main outcome measures Frontal plane knee projection angles (FPPA), and hip (HF), knee (KF) and ankle (AF) flexion angles at initial contact (IC) and peak flexion (PF) (i.e., the deepest landing position) in the sagittal plane were assessed. Results Good-to-excellent inter- and intra-rater reliability (ICC > 0.75; TEMST 10; error 0.6) were only identified for the TJA. Pre-PHV group reported higher FPPA, HF-IC, HF-PF, and KF-IC values, as well as lower AF-IC than post-PHV. Pre-PHV also displayed greater HF-IC and KF-IC than circa-PHV group. Conclusions Although both tests are reliable, the TJA might be viewed as a more informative tool given it shows greater FPPA and can also detect differences by maturity status.

The motion control of the divertor maintenance system of the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) was studied in this paper, in which CFETR Multi-Functional Maintenance Platform (MFMP) was simplified as a parallel robot for the convenience of theoretical analysis. In order to design the motion controller of parallel robot, the kinematics analysis of parallel robot was carried out. After that, the dynamic modeling of the hydraulic system was built. As the large variation of heavy payload on MFMP and highly nonlinearity of the system, A Fuzzy-PID controller was built for self-tuning PID controller parameters by using Fuzzy system to achieve better performance. In order to test the feasibility of the Fuzzy-PID controller, the simulation model of the system was built in Simulink. The results have showed that Fuzzy-PID controller can significantly reduce the angular error of the moving platform and provide the stable motion for transferring the divertor.

High-level golfers use various warm-up strategies to enhance clubhead and ball speed, including weighted equipment. Background: Advantages of digital clock drawing metrics for dementia subtype classification needs examination. Objective: To assess how well kinematic, time-based, and visuospatial features extracted from the digital Clock Drawing Test (dCDT) can classify a combined group of Alzheimer’s disease/Vascular Dementia patients versus healthy controls (HC), and classify dementia patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) versus vascular dementia (VaD). Methods: Healthy, community-dwelling control participants (n = 175), patients diagnosed clinically with Alzheimer’s disease (n = 29), and vascular dementia (n = 27) completed the dCDT to command and copy clock drawing conditions. Thirty-seven dCDT command and 37 copy dCDT features were extracted and used with Random Forest classification models. Results: When HC participants were compared to participants with dementia, optimal area under the curve was achieved using models that combined both command and copy dCDT features (AUC = 91.52%). Similarly, when AD versus VaD participants were compared, optimal area under the curve was, achieved with models that combined both command and copy features (AUC = 76.94%). Subsequent follow-up analyses of a corpus of 10 variables of interest determined using a Gini Index found that groups could be dissociated based on kinematic, time-based, and visuospatial features. Conclusion: The dCDT is able to operationally define graphomotor output that cannot be measured using traditional paper and pencil test administration in older health controls and participants with dementia. These data suggest that kinematic, time-based, and visuospatial behavior obtained using the dCDT may provide additional neurocognitive biomarkers that may be able to identify and tract dementia syndromes.

Accelerations, ground reaction force data, and other quantitative data obtained from kinematic analyses of gait initiation serve as measures of dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease. The objective of this study was to determine whether a separate center of pressure information could reveal new characteristics of reduced anticipatory postural adjustments in patients with Parkinson's disease.Ten healthy elderly subjects and 10 patients with Parkinson's disease participated in this study. Motions at gait initiation in response to a light signal to begin the task were analyzed. Anticipatory postural adjustments were characterized using trunk acceleration data and center of pressure displacement data.The separated center of pressure in patients with Parkinson's disease showed longer peak latency (Patients with Parkinson's disease experience asymmetry between the stance leg and stepping leg at gait initiation. These findings may help clinicians understand the changes to motor function in patients with Parkinson's disease and suggest strategies for improved rehabilitation training.
