Knowledge of the kinematics of young fencers is important when teaching fencing, but it has been minimally investigated in the literature, especially in young subjects, and further research is needed. Our aims were to assess whether anthropometric factors or kinematic factors are more closely related to lunge performance (speed and range of motion) in young fencers and to investigate gender differences in relation to kinematics. Fifteen fencers participated in this study (8 females and 7 males, age 12.9 ± 2.7 years, height 157.4 ± 15.1 cm, weight 49.7 ± 11.7 kg). Lunge kinematics and anthropometrics were collected with a 10-camera optoelectronic system. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation, t-test, and simple regression were performed. Peak lunge velocity was mainly correlated with posterior knee extension (r = 0.56, p = 0.031). The lunge distance and mean hip velocity were mostly correlated with the fencers’ height (r = 0.85, p = 0.000 and r = 0.76, p = 0.001) and fat-free mass (r = 0.79, p = 0.000 and r = 0.73, p = 0.002). Young fencers use a lower limb-driven strategy to perform the lunge, while adults are reported to use an upper limb-driven strategy for the lunge attack. Linear and angular velocities and ranges of motion were lower in young fencers in comparison to those of adults. Based on these results, we suggest a different approach to teaching the lunge action in young foil fencers. The implications of our study are that when teaching the lunge technique to this age group, a different approach for males and females is not required, and that strength is not a discriminant physical quality for the correctness of performance.

BACKGROUND: The post-cam mechanism in the posterior-stabilized (PS) implant plays an important role, such as durability and kinematic performances, in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in the kinematics and contact stress of five post-cam designs, which are flat-and-flat, curve-and-curve (concave), curve-and-curve (concave and convex), helical, and asymmetrical post-cam designs, using three-dimensional finite element models. METHODS: We designed the post-cam model with five different geometries. The kinematics, contact stress, and contact area were evaluated in the five post-cam designs under gait cycle loading conditions using the finite element method. RESULTS: There were no differences in the contact stress and area on the tibial insert in all designs. The largest internal rotation was shown in the swing phase for the helical design, and the largest tibial posterior translation was observed for the curve-and-curve (concave) design. The curve-and-curve (concave) design showed the lowest contact stress and the largest posterior tibial translation during the gait cycle. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the kinematics and contact stress, we found that the curve-and-curve (concave) design was more stable than other designs. From the results, we found the important factors of TKA implant considering stability and kinematics.

J Strength Cond Res 35(11): 3145-3150, 2021-Although recent literature has increased examination of the association of injury and biomechanics, there remains a lack of evidence supporting optimal windmill pitch mechanics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate trunk and pitching arm kinematics and their association with performance outcome: earned run average (ERA), in collegiate softball pitchers. Twenty-three NCAA Division I collegiate softball pitchers (20.14 ± 1.07 years; 173.93 ± 6.68 cm; and 85.79 ± 11.06 kg) performed 3 maximal effort rise ball pitches to a catcher located at a distance of 43 ft. (13.11 m). Kinematic data of the trunk and pitching arm were collected using an electromagnetic tracking system. A multiple regression analysis was performed at each pitch event: top of backswing, foot contact, ball release, and follow-through. The multiple regression at foot contact showed an overall statistically significant regression equation (F6, 16 = 3.7, p = 0.017) and explained approximately 42% of the variance in ERA (R = 0.579, Adj. R2 = 0.421). Results revealed that those pitchers who had greater trunk (SE = 0.018, t = -2.5, p = 0.023) and elbow flexion (SE = 0.006, t = -4.2, p = 0.001) at the event of foot contact had lower ERAs. This study supported previous research on the importance of trunk and elbow angle at front foot contact on rise ball pitch performance. These key technique points and the importance of elbow flexors should be explored in future research and potentially visually attended to by coaches and strength professionals.

There is a lack of evidence about the ways in which balance ability influences the kinematic and kinetic parameters and muscle activities during gait among healthy individuals. The hypothesis is that balance ability would be associated with the lower limb kinematics, kinetics and muscle activities during gait. Twenty-nine healthy volunteers (Age 32.8 ± 9.1, 18 males and 11 females) performed a Star Excursion Balance test to measure their dynamic balance and walked for at least three trials in order to obtain a good quality of data. A Vicon® 3D motion capture system and AMTI® force plates were used for the collection of the movement data. The selected muscle activities were recorded using Delsys® Electromyography (EMG). The EMG activities were compared using the maximum values and root mean squared (RMS) values within the participants. The joint angle, moment, force and power were calculated using a Vicon Plug-in-Gait model. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression analysis were performed using SPSS version 23. In the muscle activities, positive linear correlations were found between the walking and balance test in all muscles, e.g., in the multifidus (RMS) (r = 0.800 p &lt, 0.0001), vastus lateralis (RMS) (r = 0.639, p &lt, 0.0001) and tibialis anterior (RMS) (r = 0.539, p &lt, 0.0001). The regression analysis models showed that there was a strong association between balance ability (i.e., reaching distance) and the lower limb muscle activities (i.e., vastus medialis–RMS) (R = 0.885, p &lt, 0.0001), and also between balance ability (i.e., reaching distance) and the lower limb kinematics and kinetics during gait (R = 0.906, p &lt, 0.0001). In conclusion, the results showed that vastus medialis (RMS) muscle activity mainly contributes to balance ability, and that balance ability influences the lower limb kinetics and kinematics during gait.

Background Knee injuries often occur during or shortly after marathon running, and are linked to altered knee kinematics. Research question The kinematics of healthy knees during pre- and post-marathon running have not been examined with high-speed fluoroscopy. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of marathon running on knee kinematics during walking and running by using a combined high-speed fluoroscopy and MRI technique. Methods Ten healthy runners underwent knee MRI within 24 h before marathon running to construct three-dimensional (3D) knee models. Knee kinematics during treadmill walking and running were evaluated using high-speed fluoroscopy (200hz) within 24 h before and as soon as possible (within 5 h) after marathon running. All pre- and post-marathon measurements were compared. Results (1) For post-marathon walking, posterior femoral translation increased 1.4 mm at initial contact (p = 0.015); proximal-distal distance of tibia and femur decreased 0.7 mm and 0.8 mm at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.039, p = 0.046); and valgus femur rotation increased 1.2° after contact (p = 0.027). (2) For post-marathon running, proximal-distal distance decreased 0.7 mm and 1.0 mm at initial contact and after contact (p = 0.011, p = 0.003) respectively; knee flexion decreased 4.3° before contact (p = 0.007); knee flexion increased 1.8° and 2.6° at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.038, p = 0.011); external femoral rotation increased 1.2° and 1.8° at initial contact and after contact, respectively (p = 0.012, p = 0.037). Valgus femoral rotation after contact increased 2.3° (p = 0.001). Significance Post-marathon changes in valgus and external femoral rotation, knee flexion, posterior femoral translation, and proximal-distal distance may increase the risk of knee injury. This study provides information to better understand the response of the knee to marathon running.

To assess the repeatability and kinematic data of Modjaw® recordings from a group of asymptomatic patients.Modjaw® mandibular kinematic data were recorded for 22 asymptomatic volunteers (DC/TMD questionnaire). Sagittal (SCI at 3 and 5 mm) and transversal (TCI at 4 mm) condylar inclination values of the instantaneous center of rotation were measured over two recording sessions. The repeatability of recordings was determined from the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), which is based on a one-way random-effects ANOVA.The repeatability of recordings was found to be good to excellent. The mean TCI in mediotrusion was 7.1° ± 5.1, and the mean SCI in protrusion was 51.07° ± 9.43.The Modjaw® device reliably records the patient's real hinge axis kinematics during functional mandibular movements. Data can be transferred with the patient's personal reference plane and digital casts to the CAD/CAM software.

BACKGROUND: Although the instrument-assisted manual (IM) technique has been widely utilised to improve soft tissue and joint mobility, its therapeutic benefits and underlying neuromechanical mechanisms remain unknown compared to those of conventional static stretching (SS) and hold-relax (HR) manual techniques. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of the SS, HR, and IM techniques on muscle activity, kinematics, and strength during deep squatting in limited ankle dorsiflexion (DF) syndrome. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional randomised controlled study including 39 adults divided into three groups: SS group: 13, HR group: 13, IM group: 13. Outcome measures were the tibialis anterior (TA): gastrocnemius (GCM) balance ratio and ankle, knee, hip and thoracolumbar junction angles. TA muscle strength was analysed to evaluate the limited ankle DF. Analysis of variance was performed, with P< 0.05. RESULTS: The TA:GCM balance ratio, ranges of motion of ankle DF and knee flexion, and TA muscle strength in the IM group improved significantly compared to that in either the SS group or HR group (P< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our novel results demonstrated that IM was most effective in normalising TA:GCM balance, ankle DF range of motion, and TA muscle strength during deep squatting in adults with limited ankle DF.

J Strength Cond Res 35(9): 2622-2628, 2021-This investigation aimed to compare spinopelvic kinematics during rowing on an ergometer vs. in a rowing tank and to evaluate changes with progressing fatigue. Spinal and pelvic kinematics of 8 competitive scull rowers (19.0 ± 2.1 years, 179.9 ± 7.6 cm, and 74.8 ± 8.1 kg) were collected during 1 hour of rowing on an ergometer and in a rowing tank using a routine training protocol. Kinematics of the upper thoracic spine, lower thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and pelvis were determined using an infrared camera system (Vicon, Oxford, United Kingdom). There was a greater lumbar range of motion (ROM) and less posterior pelvic tilt at the catch during rowing on the ergometer compared with in the rowing tank (p = 0.001-0.048), but no differences in pelvic ROM. In the rowing tank, the pelvic ROM increased over time (p = 0.002) and the ROM of the lower thoracic spine decreased (p = 0.002). In addition, there was an extended drive phase (when the rower applies pressure to the oar levering the boat forward) and an abbreviated recovery phase (setting up the rower's body for the next stroke) in the rowing tank (p = 0.032). Different rowing training methods lead to differences in spinopelvic kinematics, which may lead to substantially different spinal loading situations. Greater pelvic rotation and lesser lumbar ROM are considered ideal; therefore, the present results indicate that rowing in the rowing tank might facilitate the maintenance of this targeted spinopelvic posture, which might help protect the lower back. Rowers, coaches, and researchers should consider the differences between rowing training methods, especially when giving training recommendations.

Background The conventional gait model (CGM) is commonly utilised within clinical motion analysis but has a number of inherent limitations. To overcome some of these limitations modifications have been made to the CGM and six-degrees of freedom models (6DoF) have been developed. Research Question How comparable are lower limb kinematics calculated using modified CGM and 6DoF models and what is the error associated with the output of each model during walking? Methods Ten healthy males attended two gait analysis sessions, in which they walked at a self-selected pace, while a 10-camera motion capture system recorded lower limb kinematics. Hip, knee and ankle joint kinematics in all three anatomical planes were calculated using a modified CGM, with medial anatomical markers and a three-dimensional foot added, and 6DoF. Mean absolute differences were calculated on a point-by-point basis over the walking gait cycle and interpreted relative to a 5° threshold to explore the comparability of model outputs. The standard error of the measurement (SEM) was also calculated on a point-by-point basis over the walking gait cycle for each model. Results Mean absolute differences above 5° were reported between the two model outputs in 58–86% of the walking gait cycle at the knee in the frontal plane, and over the entire walking gait cycle at the hip and knee in the transverse plane. SEM was typically larger for the modified CGM compared to the 6DoF, with the highest SEM values reported at the knee in the frontal plane, and the hip and the knee in the transverse plane. Significance Caution should be taken when looking to compare findings between studies utilising modified CGM and 6DoF outside of the sagittal plane, especially at the hip and knee. The reduced SEM associated with the 6DoF suggests this modelling approach may be preferable.

OBJECTIVES: Task-specific movement training is a proposed intervention for patellofemoral pain aimed to optimise movement during daily tasks. Focused, progressive task practice emphasising optimal limb alignment may yield improvements in performance-based function and hip muscle strength, and transfer learnt movement patterns to untrained tasks. The purpose of this study was to determine if task-specific movement training improves performance-based function (composite score, movement, pain during movement) in an untrained task. Our secondary purpose was to test whether hip muscle strength improved following the movement training intervention. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a prospective, non-randomised, within-group, double-baseline study. Twenty-three females with patellofemoral pain underwent task-specific movement training two times/week for 6 weeks. Outcomes were collected at three time points: enrolment (baseline), 6 weeks (preintervention) and 12 weeks (postintervention). A repeated measures analysis of variance tested whether the change during the intervention phase was greater than the change during the control phase. Y-balance composite score, hip and knee kinematics and pain during the Y-balance test were primary outcome measures; strength of the hip lateral rotator, abductor and extensor muscles was a secondary outcome measure. RESULTS: The change in composite score for the Y-balance test was not statistically significantly different between the intervention and control phases (p=0.16). The change during the intervention phase exceeded the change during the control phase for hip and knee kinematics and pain during the Y-balance test, with all variables improving (p

Arm movements make a substantial and functionally relevant contribution to quiet standing and dynamic balance tasks. The impact of restricted arm movements on balance control is particularly important for children as their postural control system is not fully matured.This study investigated the effects of arm movements on lower body joint kinematics and dynamic postural stability during anterior and lateral dynamic movements in children.Eighteen boys (age, 10.1 ± 1.6 years) completed an anterior and a lateral jump-landing task under two different verbally conveyed instructions of arm position; (1) arms placed flat across the chest touching the contralateral shoulder (i.e., restricted arm movement) and (2) arm movement without restriction. Lower body joint kinematics were recorded and used to calculate mean joint position, joint range of motion (ROM) and joint movement variability.Restricting arm movements resulted in a reduction of joint movement variability and joint ROM of the pelvis during the lateral jump (p0.05), but increased joint movement variability and joint ROM of the pelvis during the anterior jump (p0.05).The reduced joint movement variability and joint ROM with restricted arm movements during the lateral jump may represent a potential compensatory 'stiffenin strategy', whilst the increase during the anterior jump suggest an exploratory strategy. These novel findings highlight that it is important for children to be introduced to different dynamic task constraints so that they can learn to control and organise the motor system degrees of freedom appropriately.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of static and dynamic hamstring muscles stretching on kinematics and esthetics of grand battement (high velocity kicks) in adolescent recreational dancers. Sixteen participants were assessed before and immediately after both stretching modalities. Kinematics of movement was measured by an optoelectronic system and esthetics was scored by a jury of professional dancers. Both stretching modalities led to significant kinematic differences compared with without stretching. Significant linear correlations between kinematic parameters and esthetic scores have been observed: improving dancers’ physical performances has noticeable impact on the perception of their movements.

Background While patellar resurfacing can affect patellofemoral kinematics, the effect on tibiofemoral kinematics is unknown. We hypothesized that patellar resurfacing would affect tibiofemoral kinematics during deep knee flexion due to biomechanical alteration of the extensor mechanism. Methods We performed cruciate-retaining TKA in fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees (N = 5) and recorded fluoroscopic kinematics during deep knee flexion before and after the patellar resurfacing. To simulate deep knee flexion, cadaver knees were tested on a dynamic, quadriceps-driven, closed-kinetic chain simulator based on the Oxford knee rig design under loads equivalent to stair climbing. To measure knee kinematics, a 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional fluoroscopic registration technique was used. Component rotation, varus-valgus angle, and anteroposterior translation of medial and lateral contact points of the femoral component relative to the tibial component were calculated over the range of flexion. Results There were no significant differences in femoral component external rotation (before patellar resurfacing: 6.6 ± 2.3°, after patellar resurfacing: 7.2 ± 1.8°, p = 0.36), and less than 1° difference in femorotibial varus-valgus angle between patellar resurfacing and non-resurfacing (p = 0.01). For both conditions, the medial and lateral femorotibial contact points moved posteriorly from 0° to 30° of flexion, but not beyond 30° of flexion. At 10° of flexion, after patellar resurfacing, the medial contact point was more anteriorly located than before patellar resurfacing. Conclusion Despite the potential for alteration of the knee extensor biomechanics, patellar resurfacing had minimal effect on tibiofemoral kinematics. Patellar resurfacing, if performed adequately, is unlikely to affect postoperative knee function.

Objectives 1) Determine the concurrent validity of using automated 2D video analysis relative to 3D motion capture for assessing frontal and sagittal-plane knee kinematics during landing, 2) compare the accuracy of visually estimating joint center locations (2D Manual) with computing joint center locations using anatomical markers (2D Automatic), and 3) compare landing kinematics between a controlled laboratory setting and a non-laboratory setting. Design Validity/repeatability study. Settings Biomechanics research laboratory and non-laboratory athletic facility. Participants Thirty uninjured recreational athletes. Main Outcome Measures Peak knee flexion, knee flexion range of motion, peak knee frontal plane projection angle, and knee frontal plane projection angle range of motion during bilateral and unilateral landing were measured simultaneously in 3D using motion capture and in 2D using two low-cost video cameras during the first study session (biomechanics research laboratory), and in 2D only during the second study session (non-laboratory athletic facility). Results There was good to excellent agreement between 3D motion capture and both 2D Manual (ICC = 0.86–0.99) and 2D Automatic (ICC = 0.89–0.99) video analysis methods. There was good to excellent agreement between data collected in a laboratory and non-laboratory setting (ICC = 0.75–0.95). Conclusion The methods introduced in this study are inexpensive, reliable, and feasible for use in non-laboratory settings.

Recent developments suggest that autistic individuals require dynamic angry expressions to have a higher speed in order for them to be successfully identified. Therefore, it is plausible that autistic individuals do not have a 'deficit' in angry expression recognition, but rather their internal representation of these expressions is characterised by very high-speed movement. In this study, matched groups of autistic and non-autistic adults completed a novel emotion-based task which employed dynamic displays of happy, angry and sad point light facial (PLF) expressions. On each trial, participants moved a slider to manipulate the speed of a PLF stimulus until it moved at a speed that, in their 'mind's eye', was typical of happy, angry or sad expressions. Participants were shown three different types of PLFs-those showing the full-face, only the eye region, and only the mouth region, wherein the latter two were included to test whether differences in facial information sampling underpinned any dissimilarities in speed attributions. Across both groups, participants attributed the highest speeds to angry, then happy, then sad, facial motion. Participants increased the speed of angry and happy expressions by 41% and 27% respectively and decreased the speed of sad expressions by 18%. This suggests that participants have 'caricatured' internal representations of emotion, wherein emotion-related kinematic cues are over-emphasised. There were no differences between autistic and non-autistic individuals in the speeds attributed to full-face and partial-face angry, happy and sad expressions respectively. Consequently, we find no evidence that autistic adults possess atypically fast internal representations of anger.

Sea scorpions (Euchelicerata: Eurypterida) explored extreme limits of the aquatic euchelicerate body plan, such that the group contains the largest known marine euarthropods. Inferences on eurypterid life modes, in particular walking and eating, are commonly made by comparing the group with horseshoe crabs (Euchelicerata: Xiphosura). However, no models have been presented to test these hypotheses. Here, we reconstruct prosomal appendages of two exceptionally well-preserved eurypterids, Eurypterus tetragonophthalmus and Pentecopterus decorahensis, and model the flexure and extension of these appendages kinematically in three dimensions (3D). We compare these models with 3D kinematic models of Limulus polyphemus prosomal appendages. This comparison highlights that the examined eurypterid prosomal appendages could not have moved prey items effectively to the gnathal edges and would therefore not have emulated the motion of an L. polyphemus walking leg. It seems that these eurypterid appendages were used primarily to walk or grab prey, and other appendages would have moved prey for mastication. Such 3D kinematic modelling highlights how eurypterid appendage morphologies placed substantial limits on their function, suggesting a high degree of specialization, especially when compared with horseshoe crabs. Such three-dimensional kinematic modelling of these extinct groups therefore presents an innovative approach to understanding the position of these animals within their respective palaeoecosystems.

The round house kick (RHK) is a common technique in taekwondo (TKD). The kicking action originates from the dynamic stability of the pivot leg. However, some knee injuries are caused by more difficult kicking strategies, such as kicks to the opponent’s head. This study analyses the effects on TKD players in the lower extremity kinematic and neuromuscular reactions from different kicking heights. This study recruited 12 TKD players (age = 20.3 ± 1.3 years, height = 1.72 ± 0.09 m, mass = 62.17 ± 9.45 kg) with no previous lower extremity ligament injuries. All athletes randomly performed 3 RHK at different heights (head, chest, and abdomen), repeating each kick 5 times. During the RHK action, the kinematics and muscle activations of the pivot leg were collected using six high-speed cameras and electromyography devices. The results found that during the RHK return period a high kicking position demonstrated larger knee valgus with the straight knee, and more hamstring activation on the pivot leg. The RHK pivot foot for TKD players encountered more risk of injury from high target kicking. The hamstring muscle played an important stabilizing role. It is recommended that sports medicine clinicians or sports coaches use this information to provide further protective injury prevention strategies.

Background Lower limb assistive devices have been developed to help amputees or stroke patients. To precisely mimic the required function, researchers focused on how to estimate/predict the required knee angle for knee devices. Research question The objective is to estimate the motion of the human knee joint during walking using the kinematics of wearer’s thigh measured by a single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The hypotheses are that the proposed method can precisely estimate knee angle and have good universality on different subjects, speeds and strides. Method 8 healthy subjects walked on the level ground at three different speeds. An IMU mounted on the thigh was employed to collect the kinematic information of the thigh including angular velocities and accelerations. A long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network model was adopted to model intra-limb synergy between the motion of thigh and the knee joint. Such that with the trained LSTM model, the knee angle can be precisely predicted. Results Compared with the existing studies, the proposed approach based on an LSTM model has better estimation performance. The average RMSE for eight subjects can be limited to 3.89°. The proposed method has speed and stride adaptability. Significance The proposed method is promising to generate a desired and harmonious knee trajectory in line with thigh motion for assistive robotic devices.

Gait analysis provides an important tool for the study and clinical evaluation of conditions which affect knee joint biomechanics. Collection of knee joint kinematics in real world environments during locomotor activities of daily living could provide quantitative evidence to help understand functional impairment. Unfortunately, the high cost and necessary technical expertise associated with current commercially available systems for kinematic monitoring serve as an impediment to their adoption outside of specialized research groups. We have developed a low-cost, custom wearable device to address these shortcomings. The 3D printed device is capable of measuring knee flexion/extension (F/E) and adduction/abduction (AD/AB) angles. Here, we present a gold standard validation of the novel device against an optoelectronic motion capture system (MCS). Data were collected during a treadmill walking task from 8 participants on 2 separate occasions. Agreement with the MCS was quantified via root mean squared error (RMSE), coefficients of multiple correlation (CMC), paired dependent t -tests and Bland-Altman analyses. The wearable device had an overall RMSE of 3.0 ° and 2.7 ° and a CMC of 0.97 and 0.91 in F/E and AD/AB respectively. Wearable device error showed no significant differences between test occasions, and Bland-Altman analyses showed low bias with narrow limits of agreement. These results demonstrate the capability of the device to accurately and reliably monitor knee F/E and AD/AB angles showing strong potential for field implementation.

Summary Objectives In rugby union scrummaging, front-row players often sustain lumbar spine injuries, which can lead to physical impairments and absence from play. Poor lumbar spine posture adopted by front-row players during scrummaging may contribute to these lumbar spine injuries. However, few studies have investigated lumbar spine kinematics in front-row players during scrummaging and therefore little is known about what factors influence lumbar spine posture. The focus of this study was to determine whether interactions with other players affect front-row players’ ability to adopt and/or maintain a neutral lumbar spine posture. Equipment and methods Lumbar spine kinematics were investigated in 15 front-row players during scrums under two conditions: (i) one-man scrums, and (ii) scrums with the support of two second-row players. Lumbar spine three-dimensional kinematics were obtained using a system of five digital single-lens reflex cameras and photogrammetric software package. A Bayesian approach was used to determine the effect of scrummaging conditions. Results The results showed that players adopt neutral posture when scrummaging alone. In contrast, when supported by second-row players, participants adopted a flexed posture (kyphosis), which may contribute to lumbar spine injuries. However, the supported scrum condition did not change lateral-flexion (0° to 2°) and axial rotation (0° to 2°) of the spine substantially. These results suggest that training and rehabilitation programs should focus on practicing a neutral posture during scrums involving second-row players to minimise spinal stress.

Background Although Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is used in patients of wide age ranges, there is no clear information regarding the age differences in terms of intraoperative femorotibial rotational kinematics and its influence on clinical outcomes. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the age differences in terms of intraoperative rotational kinematics and postoperative clinical outcomes and to analyze their relationship with classification according to the age group. Methods We investigated 111 knees of patients who underwent Oxford UKA using a navigation system and divided them into two groups: elderly (aged ≥75 years; 48 knees) and nonelderly (aged Results The intraoperative tibial internal rotational angle relative to the femur during knee flexion was significantly larger in the nonelderly group (13.5°) than in the elderly group (9.0°). The intraoperative tibial internal rotational angle showed a positive correlation with the pain subscale of KOOS only in the nonelderly group. Conclusion Intraoperative rotational kinematics and its influence on clinical outcomes were different between elderly and nonelderly patients, and the tibial internal rotational angle could be a more important factor for successful UKA in nonelderly patients.

Infection of the tooth’s root canal requires what is called root canal treatment (RTC). The most important part of endodontic treatment is to shape the root canal and remove its infected portion using endodontic files of various protocols, kinematics and designs that suit the particular geometry. Cleaning and Shaping the canal efficiently remove the root canal bacterial biofilms or tissue remnants while keeping its natural geometry. The result is determined by shaping the ability of the relevant endodontic file. In the available literature, no norm has been established for the measurement of various endodontic files’ ability to do effective shaping. We present in this study a method to analyse and measure the shaping ability of endodontic files of three different kinematics.

Objective To characterize the effect of handrail height and age on trunk and shoulder kinematics, and concomitant handrail forces, on balance recovery reactions during gait. Background Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury in adults in North America. Handrails can significantly enhance balance recovery and help individuals to avoid falls, provided that their design allows users across the lifespan to reach and grasp the rail after balance loss, and control their trunk by applying hand-contact forces to the rail. However, the effect of handrail height and age on trunk and shoulder kinematics when recovering from perturbations during gait is unknown. Method Fourteen younger and 13 older adults experienced balance loss (sudden platform translations) while walking beside a height-adjustable handrail. Handrail height was varied from 30 to 44 inches (76 to 112 cm). Trunk and shoulder kinematics were measured via 3D motion capture; applied handrail forces were collected from load cells mounted to the rail. Results As handrail height increased (up to 42 inches/107 cm), peak trunk angular displacement and velocity generally decreased, while shoulder elevation angles during reaching and peak handrail forces did not differ significantly between 36 and 42 inches (91 and 107 cm). Age was associated with reduced peak trunk angular displacements, but did not affect applied handrail forces. Conclusion Higher handrails (up to 42 inches) may be advantageous for trunk control when recovering from destabilizations during gait. Application Our results can inform building codes, workplace safety standards, and accessibility standards, for safer handrail design.

Background Common etiologies for post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis are ankle fractures and chronic ankle instability. As the nature of trauma is different for these two etiologies, it might be expected that the two subtypes of post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis would display different foot mechanics during gait. Research question The objective of this exploratory cross-sectional study was to compare the foot kinematics and kinetics of patients suffering from post-fracture ankle osteoarthritis with those of patients suffering from post-sprain ankle osteoarthritis. Methods Twenty-nine subjects with end-stage post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis and fifteen asymptomatic control subjects participated in this study. All patients suffered from post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis secondary to ankle-related fracture (Group 1; n = 15) or to chronic ankle instability (Group 2; n = 14). A four-segment kinematic and kinetic foot model was used to calculate intrinsic foot joint kinematics and kinetics during gait. Vector field statistical analysis MANOVA was used to assess differences between groups for the entire three-component intrinsic foot joint angles and moments. Results MANOVA showed significant differences between the groups. Post-hoc analyses suggested that the differences between post-fracture ankle osteoarthritis group and controls were caused by a combination of less adducted Shank-Calcaneus position and less plantarflexion at this joint. Post-hoc analyses also suggested that both pathological groups exhibited a decreased plantarflexion moment for Shank-Calcaneus, Chopart, Lisfranc joints compared to controls. Analyses of both pathological groups versus controls for power suggested lower Shank-Calcaneus and Lisfranc power generation during pre-swing phase. Significance No significant differences were found between the two pathological groups in this exploratory study. Alterations in foot kinematics and kinetics were mainly found about the dorsi-/plantarflexion axis during the pre-swing phase of the stance phase for both pathological groups compared to controls. Observed differences were not limited to the painful ankle joint, but seem also to have affected the kinetics of the neighbouring foot joints.

Two-dimensional assessments of the lower extremity and trunk are becoming more common in the sports medicine community. However, there is little evidence evaluating expert versus novice reliability or agreement of these measurements in healthy or pathological populations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate expert versus novice reliability and agreement of two-dimensional squatting kinematics in females with and without patellofemoral pain. There was good–excellent reliability and acceptable agreement in squatting kinematics when comparing healthy and patellofemoral pain participants between the two assessors. Minimal training is required for novice assessors to measure two-dimensional squatting kinematics in healthy or pathological patients.

Enhancing traffic safety on freeways is the main goal for all transportation agencies. However, to achieve this goal, many analysis protocols of network screening models need to be improved through considering human factors while analyzing traffic data. This paper introduces one on the new analysis protocol of identifying and discriminating between normal and risky driving in clear and rainy weather. The introduced analysis protocol will consider the effect of human factors on updating the networking screening process of identifying hotspots of crash risk. This paper employs the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) data to investigate the behavior of normal and risky driving under both rainy and clear weather conditions. Near-crash events on freeways, which were used as Surrogate Measure of Safety (SMoS) for crash risk, were identified based on the changes in vehicle kinematics, including speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration and deceleration rates, and yaw rates. Through a trajectory-level data analysis, there were significant differences in driving patterns between rainy and clear weather conditions; factors that affected crash risk mainly included driver reaction and response time, their evasive maneuvers such as changes in acceleration rates and yaw rates, and lane-changing maneuvers. A cluster analysis method was employed to classify driving patterns into two clusters: normal and risky driving condition patterns, respectively. Statistical results showed that risky driving patterns started on average one second earlier in rainy weather conditions than in clear weather conditions. Furthermore, risky driving patterns extended in average three seconds in rainy weather conditions, while it was two seconds in clear weather conditions. The identification of these patterns is considered as a primary step towards an automated development that would distinguish between different driving patterns in a Connected Vehicle CV environment using Basic Safety Messages (BSM) and to enhance the network screening analysis for increased crash risk hotspots.

High-level golfers use various warm-up strategies to enhance clubhead and ball speed, including weighted equipment. We investigated the acute effects of the SuperSpeed Golf™ weighted-club warm-up on clubhead, ball, and swing kinematics, and the persistence of any acute effects in subsequent sets. Background It is unknown whether intraoperative kinematics of bicruciate-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (BCS-TKA) are different for different activities. It has also not been established whether intraoperative high-flexion motions correlate with postoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). We aimed to clarify the intraoperative kinematics of BCS-TKA during high-flexion activities and describe the relationship between intraoperative and postoperative patient-reported outcomes. Methods We examined 33 knees from 31 patients who underwent BCS-TKA and measured intraoperative knee kinematics, passive knee flexion, and cross-legged flexion using a navigation system. We also calculated knee flexion, varus-valgus, and rotation angles. As a secondary evaluation, we divided the patients into two clusters based on the PROMs and compared the kinematics between them. Results The valgus moved by 1.3 ± 1.3° beyond 90° knee flexion during passive flexion. In contrast, during cross-legged flexion, the varus moved by 4.6 ± 5.1° beyond 30° flexion. This indicated significantly increased varus alignment in the cross-legged flexion as compared with passive flexion. Beyond 60° of flexion, the femur displayed 8.8 ± 4.8° of external rotation relative to the tibia. In cross-legged flexion, the femur displayed 9.2 ± 6.5° of external rotation relative to the tibia beyond 45° of flexion. At 90° of flexion, the cross-legged knees rotated more externally. There were no significant postoperative differences between the high- and low-score clusters. Conclusion The intraoperative knee kinematics after BCS-TKA during high-flexion motions differed depending on the performance of an individual. This will be useful for physicians who might recommend BCS-TKA to new patients.

Objective The optimal anterolateral procedure to control anterolateral rotational laxity of the knee is still unknown. The objective was to compare the ability of five anterolateral procedures performed in combination with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) to restore native knee kinematics in the setting of a deficient anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and anterolateral structures. Methods A controlled laboratory study was performed using 10 fresh-frozen cadaveric whole lower limbs with intact iliotibial band. Kinematics from 0° to 90° of flexion were recorded using a motion analysis three-dimensional (3D) optoelectronic system, allowing assessment of internal rotation (IR) and anteroposterior (AP) tibial translation at 30° and 90° of flexion. Joint centres and bony landmarks were calculated from 3D bone models obtained from CT scans. Intact knee kinematics were assessed initially, followed by sequential section of the ACL and anterolateral structures (anterolateral ligament, anterolateral capsule and Kaplan fibres). After ACLR, five anterolateral procedures were performed consecutively on the same knee: ALLR, modified Ellison, deep Lemaire, superficial Lemaire and modified MacIntosh. The last three procedures were randomised. For each procedure, the graft was fixed in neutral rotation at 30° of flexion and with a tension of 20 N. Results Isolated ACLR did not restore normal overall knee kinematics in a combined ACL plus anterolateral-deficient knee, leaving a residual tibial rotational laxity (p=0.034). Only the ALLR (p=0.661) and modified Ellison procedure (p=0.641) restored overall IR kinematics to the normal intact state. Superficial and deep Lemaire and modified MacIntosh tenodeses overconstrained IR, leading to shifted and different kinematics compared with the intact condition (p=0.004, p=0.001 and p=0.045, respectively). Compared with ACLR state, addition of an anterolateral procedure did not induce any additional control on AP translation at 30° and 90° of flexion (all p>0.05), except for the superficial Lemaire procedure at 90° (p=0.032). Conclusion In biomechanical in vitro setting, a comparison of five anterolateral procedures revealed that addition of either ALLR or modified Ellison procedure restored overall native knee kinematics in a combined ACL plus anterolateral-deficient knee. Superficial and deep Lemaire and modified MacIntosh tenodeses achieved excellent rotational control but overconstrained IR, leading to a change from intact knee kinematics. Background The purpose of this study was to clarify the in vivo kinematics of a newly updated posterior-stabilised (PS) mobile-bearing total knee arthroplasty during high-flexion activities in weight-bearing (WB) and non-weight-bearing (NWB) conditions. The hypothesis was that the kinematics would differ between the WB and NWB conditions, and the kinematics would be affected by the WB condition. Methods The kinematics of 19 knees were investigated under fluoroscopy during squatting (WB) and active-assisted knee flexion (NWB) with two- and three-dimensional registration technique. Accordingly, the range of motion, anteroposterior (AP) translation of the medial and lateral contact points, axial rotation of the femoral component relative to the tibial component, and kinematic pathway were evaluated. Results There was no difference in the knee’s range of motion between the WB and NWB conditions. The medial AP translation of the femur did not differ in each flexion angle between WB and NWB conditions except for flexions of 70°. There was no difference in the lateral AP translation of the femur at all tested flexion angles between the WB and NWB conditions. The external femoral rotation and the medial pivot motion were observed throughout all flexion angles in WB conditions. The clinical relevance is that this implant could produce ideal medial AP stability and medial pivot motion. Conclusion The medial AP translation of the femur was stable for AP direction when it was in both WB and NWB conditions. In WB conditions, the medial pivot motion was observed throughout all flexion angles. Level of Evidence: III.

Elliptical trainers are a popular cardiovascular exercise for individuals with injuries or those post-operation. There is currently limited data on the impacts of direction while on elliptical trainers for knee joint kinematic risk factors. This study compared lower extremity kinematics between the forward and reverse direction at varying inclines on an elliptical trainer modified with converging footpath and reduced inter-pedal distance.Twenty-four college age participants exercised on the modified elliptical in both directions at four ramp inclines: 6°, 12°, 25°, and 35°. Three-dimensional kinematics were collected for each direction and ramp incline. A 2 × 4 (direction × incline) repeated measures analysis of variance was run with an alpha of 0.05. Simple effects analysis was run with Bonferroni correction for significant interaction or main effect of ramp incline.The reverse direction had significantly greater peak knee valgus at 6° incline (mean difference [MD] = 1.35°, p 0.014, d = 0.31) and 12° (MD = 2.41°, p 0.001, d = 0.55), peak hip abduction at 6° (MD = 2.86°, p = 0.002, d = 0.49) and 12° (MD = 2.91°, p 0.001, d = 0.51), but decreased peak knee flexion angles (p = 0.032) at all inclines.Individuals with knee pathologies such as knee osteoarthritis or anterior knee pain should exercise in the reverse direction at lower inclines. However, switching to the forward direction and/or increasing incline may increase quadriceps strength during a safe activity such as elliptical trainers.

Objective We aimed to establish a quantitative description of motion patterns and establish test-retest reliability of the four-dimensional CT when quantifying in vivo kinematics of the scaphoid, lunate, and capitate. Materials and methods We assessed in vivo kinematics of both wrists of 20 healthy volunteers (11 men and 9 women) between the ages of 20 and 40 years. All volunteers performed active flexion-extension and radial-ulnar deviation with both wrists. To test for reliability, one motion cycle was rescanned for both wrists approximately 15 min after the first scan. The coefficient of multiple correlation was used to analyze reliability. When two motion patterns are similar, the coefficient of multiple correlation tends towards 1, whereas in dissimilar motion patterns, it tends towards 0. The root mean square deviation was used to analyze the total motion patterns variability between the two scans. Results Overall, mean or median coefficient of multiple correlations were higher than 0.86. The root mean square deviations were low and ranged from 1.17° to 4.29°. Conclusion This innovative non-invasive imaging technique can reliably describe in vivo carpal kinematics of uninjured wrists in healthy individuals. It provides us with a better understanding and reference values of carpal kinematics of the scaphoid, lunate, and capitate.

Background Previous research showed that hallux rigidus (HR) affects foot and ankle kinematics during gait. It is unclear if HR affects lower limb kinematics as well. Research question Does HR affect lower limb kinematics, and if so, is gait deviation correlated with patient-reported outcome? Methods This was a retrospective case-control study, including 15 HR patients and 15 healthy controls who underwent three-dimensional gait analysis by using the Plug-in Gait lower body model. The Gait Profile Score (GPS), a gait index score describing gait deviation and composed out of nine Gait Variable Scores (GVS), and intersegmental range of motion of lower limb joints were assessed. Patient-reported outcome was assessed with the Foot Function Index (FFI) and Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ). Data were analysed with Student t-tests and Spearman rank correlations. Results HR significantly affects gait, reflected by a higher GPS in HR subjects as compared to healthy controls. Gait deviation was seen in ankle flexion (GVSankle flexion) and to a lesser extent in pelvic rotation (GVSpelvic rotation). Interestingly, these differences were not detected when lower limb kinematics were evaluated by comparing the intersegmental ranges of motion of these joints. Positive correlations were present between patient-reported outcomes and GPS, especially functional subdomains, were positively correlated with GPS and GVSankle flexion. Significance This study demonstrated that HR, next to foot kinematics, additionally affects lower limb kinematics evaluated with an objective gait index score, i.e. GPS. The positive correlation between the GPS and patient-reported outcome can be seen as the first step in defining whether objectively measured gait indices can be used in considering surgery since most of the benefit of surgery will be expected in the patients with most gait deviation.

Background:Double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) is a well-known treatment that restores the stability of ACL-deficient knees. However, some isolated ACL-reconstructed knees ultimately show rotatory laxity and develop osteoarthritis. Whether combined ACLR with anterolateral structure (ALS) augmentation (ALSA) can provide better improvement in the in vivo knee rotational kinematics remains unknown.Hypothesis:When compared with isolated double-bundle ACLR, combined double-bundle ACLR with ALSA can improve knee in vivo rotational kinematics and provide better restoration of knee kinematics.Study Design:Controlled laboratory study.Methods:Sixteen patients with unilateral ACL injury were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive either combined double-bundle ACLR and ALSA (ALSA group) or isolated double-bundle ACLR (ACLR group). All patients performed a single-leg lunge using the operative and nonoperative/contralateral legs under dual-fluoroscopic imaging system surveillance during a hospital visit at a minimum 1 year (12-13 months) of follow-up to assess the 6 degrees of freedom knee kinematics. Functional evaluation using the Lysholm and Marx rating scales and clinical examinations were also performed.Results:From full extension to approximately 90° of knee flexion at 5° intervals, the mean ± SD internal rotation of the reconstructed knees in the ALSA group (1.5°± 0.9°) was significantly smaller than that of the contralateral knees (8.2°± 1.9°; P = .008). The ALSA group knees also showed significantly ( P = .045) more medial translation than the contralateral knees. In the ACLR group, the mean internal rotation of the reconstructed knee (6.0°± 2.1°) was significantly smaller than that of the contralateral knees (8.9°± 0.6°; P < .001). At full extension, the tibia was significantly more externally rotated than that of the contralateral legs (0.5°± 7.4° vs 7.6°± 3.4°, P = .049).Conclusion:When compared with isolated double-bundle ACLR, double-bundle ACLR augmented with ALS reconstruction resulted in anterolateral rotatory overconstraint during the lunge motion.Clinical Relevance:Additional ALSA of double-bundle ACL-reconstructed knees overconstrained rotatory stability. Therefore, the use of ALSA for ACL-reconstructed knees should be considered with caution for patients with ACL deficiency and anterolateral rotatory instability. Longer-term follow-up to evaluate long-term outcomes and altered kinematics over time is recommended.

In baseball pitching, biomechanical parameters have been linked to ball velocity and potential injury risk. However, although the features of a biomechanical model have a significant influence on the kinematics and kinetics of a motion, this influence have not been assessed for pitching. The aim of this study was to evaluate the choice of the trunk and shoulder features, by comparing two models using the same input. The models differed in thoraco-humeral joint definition (moving or fixed with the thorax), joint centre estimation, values of the inertial parameters and computational framework. One professional pitcher participated in the study. We found that the different features of the biomechanical models have a substantial influence on the kinematics and kinetics of the pitchers. With a fixed thoraco-humeral joint the peak average thorax angular velocity was delayed and underestimated by 17% and the shoulder internal rotation velocity was overestimated by 7%. The use of a thoraco-humeral joint fixed to the thorax will lead to an overestimation of the rotational power at the shoulder and will neglect the power produced by the forward and upward translation of the shoulder girdle. These findings have direct implications for the interpretation of shoulder muscle contributions to the pitch.

Study aim: Three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis is one of the available methods used to evaluate body kinematics. The aim of this study was to assess the intrarater reliability of measurement of pelvic and lower limb kinematics during two single leg landing tasks using 3D motion analysis. Material and methods: 19 healthy volunteers (8 women, 11 men, age 23.1 ± 2.8 years, weight 70.7 ± 9.2 kg, height 174.8 ± 6.7 cm) performed five repeated single leg hurdle hops (SLHH) (30 cm height) and five single leg drop landings (SLDL) from a box (40 cm height) in one measurement session with a 15-minute break and after marker replacement with 3D assessment. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and the smallest detectable differences (SDD) were used to examine the reliability of kinematic parameters during the landing phase. Results: The average intrarater ICC for SLHH was 0.92 (SEM = 1.69°, SDD 4.68°) and for SLDL was 0.96 (SEM = 0.81°, SDD = 2.26°). After marker replacement ICC decreased to an average value of 0.81 (SEM = 2.05°, SDD 5.68°) for SLHH and 0.82 (SEM = 2.36°, SDD 6.53°) for SLDL. Conclusions: Using the 3D method to evaluate pelvis and lower limb kinematics during single leg landing in one measurement session is a high reliability method for most parameters. Marker replacement is one of the factors that reduce the reliability of measures. When applying the SEM and SDD values, which the present paper contains, it is worth mentioning that the obtained results are caused by measurement error or they are due to individual issues.

This study explored the relationship between single motor unit (MU) firing rates (FRs) and limb movement velocity during voluntary shortening contractions when accounting for the effects of time course variability between different kinematic comparisons. Single MU trains recorded by intramuscular electromyography in agonist muscles of the anconeus (n = 15 participants) and lateral head of the triceps brachii (n = 6) were measured during each voluntary shortening contraction. Elbow extension movements consisted of a targeted velocity occurring along the sagittal plane at 25, 50, 75 and 100% of maximum velocity. To account for the effect of differences in contraction time course between parameters, each MU potential was time locked throughout the shortening muscle contraction and linked with separated kinematic parameters of the elbow joint. Across targeted movement velocities, instantaneous FRs were significantly correlated with elbow extension rate of torque development (r = 0.45) and torque (r = 0.40), but FRs were not correlated with velocity (r = 0.03, p = n.s.). Instead, FRs had a weak indirect relationship with limb movement velocity and position assessed through multiple correlation of the stepwise kinematic progression. Results show that voluntary descending synaptic inputs correspond to a more direct relationship between agonist muscle FRs and torque during shortening contractions, but not velocity. Instead, FRs were indirectly correlated to preparing the magnitude of imminent movement velocity of the lagging limb through torque.

Organismic, task, and environmental constraints are known to differ between skilled male and female cricket batters during power hitting tasks. Despite these influences, the techniques used in such tasks have only been investigated in male cricket batters. This study compared power hitting kinematics between 15 male and 15 female batters ranging from university to international standard. General linear models were used to assess the effect of gender on kinematic parameters describing technique, with height and body mass as covariates. Male batters generated greater maximum bat speeds, ball launch speeds, and ball carry distances than female batters on average. Male batters had greater pelvis-thorax separation in the transverse plane at the commencement of the downswing (β = 1.14; p = 0.030) and extended their lead elbows more during the downswing (β = 1.28; p = 0.008) compared to female batters. The hypothesised effect of gender on the magnitude of wrist uncocking during the downswing was not observed (β = −0.14; p = 0.819). The causes of these differences are likely to be multi-factorial, involving aspects relating to the individual players, their history of training experiences and coaching practices, and the task of power hitting in male or female cricket.

This study was aimed to compare the knee kinematic parameters between dominant and non-dominant legs of adolescent female athletes during change of direction (CoD) in fatigued and unpredictable settings. Knee kinematic parameters on 49 athletes (mean± SD; age = 14.69 ± 0.14 years; mass = 49.05 ± 1.22 kg; height = 1.61 ± 0.08 m) during CoD before and after performing the Bruce protocol and also in predictable and unpredictable setting situations were collected. Kinematic data were recorded at a sampling rate of 200 Hz. The results showed that the dominant leg had significantly 18.7% more flexion (p = 0.001, η = 0.95), 7.1% less valgus (p = 0.001, η = 0.95) and 0.32% lower tibia rotation (p = 0.003, η = 0.16) compared to the non-dominant leg in predictable and pre-fatigue (p < 0.05) conditions. With unpredictable and post-fatigue conditions the dominant limb again demonstrated 17.4% (p = 0.001, η = 0.67), greater knee flexion, 6.8% (0.003,η = 0.97) lower knee valgus and 1.4% (p = 0.001, η = 0.71) less tibiarotation. In conclusion, there may be an increased risk of injury withthe non-dominant leg due to changes in kinematic parameters caused by fatigue and unpredictable CoD manoeuvres.

Background The morphology of foot muscles that support the medial longitudinal arch differs between normal and pronated feet. The degree to which the difference depends on the severity of the pronated foot deformity is unclear. In the clinical setting, however, to reduce the pronated deformity, muscle-strengthening exercises are performed. Research question Does a relationship exist between foot muscle morphology and severity of the pronated foot deformity and foot kinematics during gait? Methods Using the six-item foot posture index (FPI-6), 26 study participants were assessed for their foot posture and divided into two groups of 13 participants each based on the FPI-6 score: pronated foot group (with a score of 6–9) and highly pronated foot group (with a score of 10–12). Select foot muscles were scanned with ultrasonography, and muscle thicknesses were measured. The following were the muscles of interest: abductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis and longus, flexor digitorum brevis and longus, and peroneus longus. Foot kinematic data during gait was collected using a three-dimensional motion capture system as a dynamic navicular drop. Results No between-group differences were noted for muscle thickness and dynamic navicular drop. However, the abductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis thicknesses were correlated with the dynamic navicular drop, but not with the severity of the pronated foot deformity. Significance In individuals with pronated foot deformity, more developed abductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis muscles may reduce the dynamic navicular drop that represents the degree of medial longitudinal arch deformation during the stance phase of gait.

Biped models (BMs) have extensive applications in structural vibration, robotics, and sports medicine, but the differences between the walking kinematics simulated by the BM model and those measured through an experiment have not been comprehensively recognized. This paper used wireless inertial measurement units (IMUs) to monitor the acceleration of center of masses (COMs) of 6 volunteers walking under the conditions of natural and fixed-knee gait. The observations were compared with the simulations from two typical BMs and also with the measurements from former research studies. The results show that when the step frequency is lower than 2.0 Hz, the peaks of acceleration simulated by BM are close to those observed in experiments and the errors are acceptable, while the step frequency is higher than 2.0 Hz, the discrepancy between the numerical and the experimental results is increasingly larger with higher step frequencies, and the errors can reach 60% at most. The comparison between numerical and experimental results indicates that the knee-fixing assumption of BMs may lead to overestimating the peaks of accelerations, but this assumption fails to explain the different increasing rates with respect to step frequency. Further research studies about the accuracy of BMs and relative modification methods are expected for civil engineering applications.

Synopsis Larvae of barnacles typically pass through naupliar and cyprid planktonic stages before settlement and metamorphosis. As the final larval stage, cyprids swim much faster than nauplii and in turbulent fluid environments with high shears as they seek habitat. Cyprids swim with six pairs of reciprocating thoracic appendages and use two anterior antennules during settlement. Our understanding of how thoracic appendages generate movement is limited due to short stroke intervals (∼5 ms) that impede observations of the shape and trajectory of appendages. Here, we used high-speed videography to observe both free-swimming and tethered cyprids of the intertidal acorn barnacle Balanus glandula to produce a comprehensive description of thoracic appendage swimming kinematics. Cyprids used a drag-based method of swimming: their six pairs of thoracic appendages moved through metachronal power strokes and synchronous recovery strokes similar to the thoracopod motions in calanoid copepods during escape swimming. During the power stroke, plumose setae on each appendage pair spread laterally into a high surface area and high drag paddle composed of a meshwork of fused setules. This interconnected setal array collapsed into a low surface area and low drag shape during the recovery stroke. These effective swimming appendages allowed cyprids to move upward at an average speed of 1.4 cm/s (∼25 body lengths/s) with an average beat frequency of 16 beats/s, and reach an instantaneous velocity of up to 6 cm/s. Beat frequency of the thoracic appendages was significantly associated with speed, with higher beat frequencies indicating faster swimming speed. At their average speed, cyprids moved at the intermediate Reynolds number of ∼10, in which both viscous and inertial forces affected movement. Cyprids could alter swimming direction by sweeping the posterior-most appendage pair to one side and beating the remaining thoracic appendages synchronously through the power stroke with greater motion on the outside of their turn. These results greatly enhance our understanding both of cyprid motility and how small planktonic organisms can use swimming appendages with fused setule arrays to reach high swimming speeds and affect directional changes.

Athletes use either a seven-step or eight-step strategy to reach the first hurdle in the 110 m hurdle event. This study investigated the effect of step strategy on the start position, the block exit and the first four approach steps. Two-dimensional video data were collected in the sagittal plane from 12 male sprinters, grouped as seven-step (n = 6) or eight-step (n = 6) strategists. Mean block spacing was 0.08 m further apart, block contact time 0.06s longer, first step 0.25 m longer and first ground contact 0.03s longer for seven-step athletes compared with eight-step athletes. There was also a greater vertical displacement of the centre of mass (CoM) (0.04 m) for the seven-step athletes compared with the eight-step athletes. Additionally, the front hip mean angular acceleration was 197°/s2 slower for the seven-step athletes than the eight-step athletes. There was limited difference between groups for mean horizontal velocity at the moment of block exit (0.14 m/s). These technical alterations provide an important first insight into start kinematics. The findings of this study identify the position in the starting blocks, and the key parameters which pertain to the initial phases for a successful seven-step approach strategy to be employed.

Overuse knee injuries are common in bicycling and are often attributed to poor bicycle-fit. Bicycle-fit for knee health focuses on setting saddle height to elicit a minimum knee flexion angle of 25-40°. Equations to predict saddle height include a single input, resulting in a likely suboptimal bicycle-fit. The purpose of this work was to develop an equation to predict saddle height from anthropometrics, bicycle geometry, and user-defined joint kinematics.

The acoustic measure, relative fundamental frequency (RFF), has been proposed as an objective metric for assessing vocal hyperfunction; however, its underlying physiological mechanisms have not yet been fully characterized. This study aimed to characterize the relationship between RFF and vocal fold kinematics. Simultaneous acoustic and high-speed videoendoscopic (HSV) recordings were collected as younger and older speakers repeated the utterances /ifi/ and /iti/. RFF values at voicing offsets and onsets surrounding the obstruents were estimated from acoustic recordings, whereas glottal angles, durations of voicing offset and onset, and a kinematic estimate of laryngeal stiffness (KS) were obtained from HSV images. No differences were found between younger and older speakers for any measure. RFF did not differ between the two obstruents at voicing offset; however, fricatives necessitated larger glottal angles and longer durations to devoice. RFF values were lower and glottal angles were greater for stops relative to fricatives at voicing onset. KS values were greater in stops relative to fricatives. The less adducted vocal folds with greater KS and lower RFF at voicing onset for stops relative to fricatives in this study were in accordance with prior speculations that decreased vocal fold contact area and increased laryngeal stiffness may decrease RFF.

BACKGROUND Suspension training (SET) is a method of neuromuscular training that enables the body to carry out active training under unstable support through a suspension therapy system. However, there have been few reports in the literature on the application of SET to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients. It is not clear what aspects of the patient's function are improved after SET. AIM To investigate the effect of SET on the neuromuscular function, postural control, and knee kinematics of patients after ACLR surgery. METHODS Forty participants were randomized to an SET group or a control group. The SET group subjects participated in a SET protocol over 6 wk. The control group subjects participated in a traditional training protocol over 6 wk. Isokinetic muscle strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings, static and dynamic posture stability test, and relative translation of the injured knee were assessed before and after training. RESULTS The relative peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstrings in both groups increased significantly (P < 0.001), and the SET group increased by a higher percentage than those in the control group (quadriceps: P = 0.004; hamstrings: P = 0.011). After training, both groups showed significant improvements in static and dynamic posture stability (P < 0.01), and the SET group had a greater change than the control group (P < 0.05). No significant improvement on the relative translation of the injured knee was observed after training in either group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings show that SET promotes great responses in quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength and balance function in ACLR patients.

Gaze stability is the ability of the eyes to fixate a stable point when the head is moving in space. Because gaze stability is impaired in peripheral vestibular loss patients, gaze stabilization exercises are often prescribed to facilitate compensation. However, both the assessment and prescription of these exercises are subjective. Accordingly, here we quantified head motion kinematics in patients with vestibular loss while they performed the standard of care gaze stability exercises, both before and after surgical deafferentation. We also correlate the head kinematic data with standard clinical outcome measures. Using inertial measurement units, we quantified head movements in patients as they transitioned through these two vestibular states characterized by different levels of peripheral damage. Comparison with age-matched healthy control subjects revealed that the same kinematic measurements were significantly abnormal in patients both pre- and post-surgery. Regardless of direction, patients took a longer time to move their heads during the exercises. Interestingly, these changes in kinematics suggest a strategy that existed preoperatively and remained symmetric after surgery although the patients then had complete unilateral vestibular loss. Further, we found that this kinematic assessment was a good predictor of clinical outcomes, and that pre-surgery clinical measures could predict post-surgery head kinematics. Thus, together, our results provide the first experimental evidence that patients show significant changes in head kinematics during gaze stability exercises, even prior to surgery. This suggests that early changes in head kinematic strategy due to significant but incomplete vestibular loss are already maladaptive as compared to controls.

Background\ud The double-leg jump-landing (DLJL) task is commonly used as a movement screen that can be implemented in large cohorts of athletes. However, it is debatable whether the DLJL is ecologically valid and reflects sporting requirements or injury-prone situations, such as cutting and pivoting.\ud \ud Research question\ud Which jump-landing movement variation best represents the kinematics of unanticipated side-step cutting?\ud \ud Methods\ud Forty-two participants (25 males and 17 females) performed unanticipated side-step cutting and four jump-landing tasks: DLJL, rotated DLJL (DLJLrot), single-leg jump-landing (SLJL), and rotated SLJL (SLJLrot). Ankle, knee, hip, pelvis, and trunk angles and angular velocities, and pelvic linear accelerations were collected at initial contact and during the first 100 milliseconds after initial contact (minimum, maximum, and range values) using a three-dimensional infrared camera system and inertial measurement units. Pre-contact foot-ground angles and subjective task difficulty ratings were also recorded. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) between cutting and jump-landing kinematics were calculated for each participant and jump-landing variation. Friedman tests with pairwise comparisons were then used to compare the degree of association between the four different jump-landing tasks at the specified time events and to compare the difficulty ratings.\ud \ud Results\ud Considering the ICC values across the events of interest, the kinematics of the DLJL were the least associated with those of cutting (ICC = 0.00 to 0.81), and DLJLrot (ICC = 0.34 to 0.81) and SLJLrot (ICC = 0.31 to 0.80) biomechanics the most. Participants rated the perceived challenge of the single-leg tasks in a similar manner to cutting (p > 0.103), and the SLJLrot as the most difficult task (median = “neutral”, mode = “neutral”).\ud \ud Significance\ud Due to their biomechanical associations with cutting maneuver and subjectively-rated difficulty levels, both DLJLrot and SLJLrot may be more appropriate and ecologically valid for screening for risk of injury across a range of sports.

The aim was to compare the differences in kinematics of elbow and wrist and shock transmission of the upper extremity in wheelchair tennis players and able-bodied players (in standing and sitting position) during backhand strokes. Fifteen wheelchair tennis and 15 able-bodied tennis players enrolled. Electromagnetic system and trial-axial accelerometers were used to measure the difference in the kinematic parameters of the upper extremity and the impact vibration transferred across the wrist joint. The results indicated that wheelchair players demonstrated unique elbow and wrist kinematics, especially shorter total swing time, greater elbow flexion at preparation, lower wrist extension acceleration before impact, and smaller racket vibration at impact. Comparing to able-bodied players in standing, wheelchair players and players in sitting demonstrated significantly greater elbow joint flexion/extension angle, angular velocity, angular acceleration during extension, and wrist joint flexion angle. Wheelchair players also differ significantly with the players in sitting regarding elbow joint angular velocity and acceleration, and wrist joint flexion velocity. These adaptations and adjustments can be attributed to the missing lower extremity function and deficient trunk kinetic chain. The differences between wheelchair tennis players and able-bodied players in sitting could represent the progress as the wheelchair players moving from novices to experts.

To determine if anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) with lateral extraarticular tenodesis (LET) is beneficial for restoring knee kinematics with concomitant meniscal pathology causing rotatory knee instability. Twenty patients with an ACL tear were randomized to either isolated ACLR or ACLR with LET. Patients were divided into four groups based on the surgery performed and the presence of meniscal tear (MT): ACLR without MT, ACLR with MT, ACLR with LET without MT, and ACLR with LET with MT. Kinematic data normalized to the contralateral, healthy knee were collected using dynamic biplanar radiography superimposed with high-resolution computed tomography scans of patients’ knees during downhill running. Anterior tibial translation (ATT) and tibial rotation (TR) as well as patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were analyzed at 6- and 12-months postoperatively. At 6 months, ACLR with LET resulted in significantly decreased ATT at heel strike compared to ACLR (ACLR without MT: 0.3 ± 0.8 mm and ACLR with MT: 1.4 ± 3.1 mm vs. ACLR with LET without MT: − 2.5 ± 3.4 mm and ACLR with LET with MT: − 1.5 ± 1.2 mm ATT, p = 0.02). At 6 months, at toe off ACLR with LET better restored ATT to that of the contralateral, healthy knee in patients with meniscal pathology, while in patients without meniscal pathology, ACLR with LET resulted in significantly decreased ATT (1.0 ± 2.6 mm ATT vs. − 2.6 ± 1.7 mm ATT, p = 0.04). There were no significant differences in kinematics or PROMs between groups at 12 months. For combined ACL and meniscus injury, ACLR with LET restores native knee kinematics at toe off but excessively decreases ATT at heel strike in the early post-operative period (6 months) without altering knee kinematics in the long term. Future large-scale clinical studies are needed to better understand the function of LET and ultimately improve patient outcomes. III.
