When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify the spectrum $\mathfrak{B}$ of the Cartan subalgebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{S}, c)$. We then show that the quotient groupoid $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ acts on $\mathfrak{B}$, and that the corresponding action groupoid is exactly the Weyl groupoid of the Cartan pair. Lastly we show that, if the quotient map $\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ admits a continuous section, then the Weyl twist is also given by an explicit continuous $2$-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S} \ltimes \mathfrak{B}$., 32 pages

In this paper we prove that a nodal hypersurface in P^4 with defect has at least (d-1)^2 nodes, and if it has at most 2(d-2)(d-1) nodes and d>6 then it contains either a plane or a quadric surface. Furthermore, we prove that a nodal double cover of P^3 ramified along a surface of degree 2d with defect has at least d(2d-1) nodes. In this paper, we prove that for the oper stratification of the de Rham moduli space $M_{\mathrm{dR}}(X,r)$, the closed oper stratum is the unique minimal stratum with dimension $r^2(g-1)+g+1$, and the open dense stratum consisting of irreducible flat bundles with stable underlying vector bundles is the unique maximal stratum., Comment: This paper comes from the last section of arXiv:1905.10765v1 as an independent paper. The original definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky has been categorified and generalised in several ways over the course of the past 20 years, giving rise to cluster theory. This study lead to Iyama and Yang's generalised cluster categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ coming from $n$-Calabi-Yau triples $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$. In this paper, we use some classic tools of homological algebra to give a deeper understanding of such categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Let $k$ be a field, $n\geq 3$ an integer and $\mathcal{T}$ a $k$-linear triangulated category with a triangulated subcategory $\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ and a subcategory $\mathcal{M}=\text{add}(M)$ such that $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$ is an $n$-Calabi-Yau triple. In this paper, we prove some properties of the triangulated categories $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Our first result gives a relation between the Hom-spaces in these categories, using limits and colimits. Our second result is a Gap Theorem in $\mathcal{T}$, showing when the truncation triangles split. Moreover, we apply our two theorems to present an alternative proof to a result by Guo, originally stated in a more specific setup of dg $k$-algebras $A$ and subcategories of the derived category of dg $A$-modules. This proves that $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ is Hom-finite and $(n-1)$-Calabi-Yau, its object $M$ is $(n-1)$-cluster tilting and the endomorphism algebras of $M$ over $\mathcal{T}$ and over $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ are isomorphic. In this paper, we study noncommutative surface singularities arising from orders. The singularities we study are mild in the sense that they have finite representation type or, equivalently, are log terminal in the sense of the Mori minimal model program for orders (Chan and Ingalls in Invent Math 161(2):427–452, 2005). These were classified independently by Artin (in terms of ramification data) and Reiten–Van den Bergh (in terms of their AR-quivers). The first main goal of this paper is to connect these two classifications, by going through the finite subgroups $$G \subset {{{\,\mathrm{GL}\,}}_2}$$ , explicitly computing $$H^2(G,k^*)$$ , and then matching these up with Artin’s list of ramification data and Reiten–Van den Bergh’s AR-quivers. This provides a semi-independent proof of their classifications and extends the study of canonical orders in Chan et al. (Proc Lond Math Soc (3) 98(1):83–115, 2009) to the case of log terminal orders. A secondary goal of this paper is to study noncommutative analogues of plane curves which arise as follows. Let $$B = k_{\zeta } \llbracket x,y \rrbracket $$ be the skew power series ring where $$\zeta $$ is a root of unity, or more generally a terminal order over a complete local ring. We consider rings of the form $$A = B/(f)$$ where $$f \in Z(B)$$ which we interpret to be the ring of functions on a noncommutative plane curve. We classify those noncommutative plane curves which are of finite representation type and compute their AR-quivers.

If $G$ is a group, a virtual retract of $G$ is a subgroup which is a retract of a finite index subgroup. Most of the paper focuses on two group properties: property (LR), that all finitely generated subgroups are virtual retracts, and property (VRC), that all cyclic subgroups are virtual retracts. We study the permanence of these properties under commensurability, amalgams over retracts, graph products and wreath products. In particular, we show that (VRC) is stable under passing to finite index overgroups, while (LR) is not. The question whether all finitely generated virtually free groups satisfy (LR) motivates the remaining part of the paper, studying virtual free factors of such groups. We give a simple criterion characterizing when a finitely generated subgroup of a virtually free group is a free factor of a finite index subgroup. We apply this criterion to settle a conjecture of Brunner and Burns., 30 pages, 1 figure. v3: added Lemma 5.8 and made minor corrections following referee's comments. In our previous paper we have elaborated a certain signed count of real lines on real projective n-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree 2n-1. Contrary to the honest "cardinal" count, it is independent of the choice of a hypersurface, and by this reason provides a strong lower bound on the honest count. In this count the contribution of a line is its local input to the Euler number of a certain auxiliary vector bundle. The aim of this paper is to present other, in a sense more geometric, interpretations of this local input. One of them results from a generalization of Segre species of real lines on cubic surfaces and another from a generalization of Welschinger weights of real lines on quintic threefolds., Comment: 20 pages, typos are corrected (most essential, in Proposition 4.3.3)

Prime end boundaries $\partial_P\Omega$ of domains $\Omega$ are studied in the setting of complete doubling metric measure spaces supporting a $p$-Poincar\'e inequality. Notions of rectifiably (in)accessible- and (in)finitely far away prime ends are introduced and employed in classification of prime ends. We show that, for a given domain, the prime end capacity of the collection of all rectifiably inaccessible prime ends together will all non-singleton prime ends is zero. We show the resolutivity of continouous functions on $\partial_P\Omega$ which are Lipschitz continuous with respect to the Mazurkiewicz metric when restricted to the collection $\partial_{SP}\Omega$ of all accessible prime ends. Furthermore, bounded perturbations of such functions in $\partial_P\Omega\setminus\partial_{SP}\Omega$ yield the same Perron solution. In the final part of the paper, we demonstrate the (resolutive) Kellogg property with respect to the prime end boundary of bounded domains in the metric space. For any symplectic manifold $${(M,\omega )}$$ , the set of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ forms a group and $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ contains an important subset $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ which consists of time one flows of autonomous(time-independent) Hamiltonian vector fields on M. One might expect that $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a very small subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ . In this paper, we estimate the size of the subset $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric which was introduced by Hofer. Polterovich and Shelukhin proved that the complement $${{\text {Ham}}^c\backslash {\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a dense subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric if $${(M,\omega )}$$ is a closed symplectically aspherical manifold where Conley conjecture is established (Polterovich and Schelukhin in Sel Math 22(1):227–296, 2016). In this paper, we generalize above theorem to general closed symplectic manifolds and general conv! ex symplectic manifolds. So, we prove that the set of all non-autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $${{\text {Ham}}^c\backslash {\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a dense subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric if $${(M,\omega )}$$ is a closed or convex symplectic manifold without relying on the solution of Conley conjecture.

Recently, Lutz and Stull used methods from algorithmic information theory to prove two new Marstrand-type projection theorems, concerning subsets of Euclidean space which are not assumed to be Borel, or even analytic. One of the theorems states that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ is any set with equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions, then $$ \dim_{\mathrm{H}} π_{e}(K) = \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\} $$ for almost every $e \in S^{n - 1}$. Here $π_{e}$ stands for orthogonal projection to $\mathrm{span}(e)$. The primary purpose of this paper is to present proofs for Lutz and Stull's projection theorems which do not refer to information theoretic concepts. Instead, they will rely on combinatorial-geometric arguments, such as discretised versions of Kaufman's "potential theoretic" method, the pigeonhole principle, and a lemma of Katz and Tao. A secondary purpose is to slightly generalise Lutz and Stull's theorems: the versions in this paper apply to orthogonal projections to $m$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, for all $0 < m < n$., 11 pages. v2: Incorporated referee suggestions

In this paper, we study large $m$ asymptotics of the $l^1$ minimal $m$-partition problem for Dirichlet eigenvalue. For any smooth domain $\Omega\in \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $|\Omega|=1$, we prove that the limit $\lim\limits_{m\rightarrow\infty}l_m^1(\Omega)=c_0$ exists, and the constant $c_0$ is independent of the shape of $\Omega$. We use hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m/F_q$, which are particular sorts of rigid local systems, to construct explicit local systems whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite general linear groups $GL_n(q)$ for any $n \ge 2$ and and any prime power $q$, so long as $q > 3$ when $n=2$. This paper continues a program of finding simple (in the sense of simple to remember) families of exponential sums whose monodromy groups are certain finite groups of Lie type, cf. [Gr], [KT1], [KT2], [KT3] for (certain) finite symplectic and unitary groups, or certain sporadic groups, cf. [KRL], [KRLT1], [KRLT2], [KRLT3]. The novelty of this paper is obtaining $GL_n(q)$ in this hypergeometric way. A pullback construction then yields local systems on $A^1/F_q$ whose geometric monodromy groups are $SL_n(q)$. In this paper, using computations done through the LiE software, we compare the tensor product of irreducible selfdual representations of the special linear group with those of classical groups to formulate some conjectures relating the two. In the process a few other phenomenon present themselves which we record as questions. More precisely, under the natural correspondence of irreducible finite dimensional selfdual representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\mathbb C})$ with those of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\mathbb C})$, it is easy to see that if the tensor product of three irreducible representations of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\rm C})$ contains the trivial representation, then so does the tensor product of the corresponding representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\rm C})$. The paper formulates a conjecture in the reverse direction. We also deal with the pair $({\rm SL}_{2n+1}({\rm C}), {\rm Sp}_{2n}({\rm C}))$., Comment: Revised version!

The motivating question of this paper is roughly the following: given a group scheme $G$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, $p$ prime, with semisimple generic fiber $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$, how far are open subgroups of $G(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ from subgroups of the form $X(\mathbb{Z}_p)\mathbf{K}_p(p^n)$, where $X$ is a subgroup scheme of $G$ and $\mathbf{K}_p(p^n)$ is the principal congruence subgroup $\operatorname{Ker} (G(\mathbb{Z}_p)\rightarrow G(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}))$? More precisely, we will show that for $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$ simply connected there exist constants $J\ge1$ and $\varepsilon>0$, depending only on $G$, such that any open subgroup of $G (\mathbb{Z}_p)$ of level $p^n$ admits an open subgroup of index $\le J$ which is contained in $X(\mathbb{Z}_p)\mathbf{K}_p(p^{\lceil \varepsilon n\rceil})$ for some proper connected algebraic subgroup $X$ of $G$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Moreover, if $G$ is defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, then $\varepsilon$ and $J$ can be taken independently of $p$. We also give a correspondence between natural classes of $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbb{Z}_p}$ and of closed subgroups of $G(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ that can be regarded as a variant over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of Nori's results on the structure of finite subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}(N_0,\mathbb{F}_p)$ for large $p$. As an application we give a bound for the volume of the intersection of a conjugacy class in the group $G (\hat{\mathbb{Z}}) = \prod_p G (\mathbb{Z}_p)$, for $G$ defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, with an arbitrary open subgroup. In a future paper, this result will be applied to the limit multiplicity problem for arbitrary congruence subgroups of the arithmetic lattice $G (\mathbb{Z})$., fixed a few inaccuracies and made some stylistic changes to appear in JEMS

The closest infinite dimensional relatives of compact Lie algebras are Hilbert-Lie algebras, i.e. real Hilbert spaces with a Lie algebra structure for which the scalar product is invariant. Locally affine Lie algebras (LALAs) correspond to double extensions of (twisted) loop algebras over simple Hilbert-Lie algebras $\mathfrak{k}$, also called affinisations of $\mathfrak{k}$. They possess a root space decomposition whose corresponding root system is a locally affine root system of one of the $7$ families $A_J^{(1)}$, $B_J^{(1)}$, $C_J^{(1)}$, $D_J^{(1)}$, $B_J^{(2)}$, $C_J^{(2)}$ and $BC_J^{(2)}$ for some infinite set $J$. To each of these types corresponds a "minimal" affinisation of some simple Hilbert-Lie algebra $\mathfrak{k}$, which we call standard. In this paper, we give for each affinisation $\mathfrak{g}$ of a simple Hilbert-Lie algebra $\mathfrak{k}$ an explicit isomorphism from $\mathfrak{g}$ to one of the standard affinisations of $\mathfrak{k}$. The existence of such an isomorphism could also be derived from the classification of locally affine root systems, but for representation theoretic purposes it is crucial to obtain it explicitely as a deformation between two twists which is compatible with the root decompositions. We illustrate this by applying our isomorphism theorem to the study of positive energy highest weight representations of $\mathfrak{g}$. The speed of a class of graphs counts the number of graphs on the vertex set $\lbrace 1,\dots, n\rbrace$ inside the class as a function of $n$. In this paper, we investigate this function for many classes of graphs that naturally arise in discrete geometry, for example intersection graphs of segments or disks in the plane. While upper bounds follow from Warren's theorem (a variant of a theorem of Milnor and Thom), all the previously known lower bounds were obtained from ad hoc constructions for very specific classes. We prove a general theorem giving an essentially tight lower bound for the number of graphs on $\lbrace 1,\dots, n\rbrace$ whose edges are defined using the signs of a given finite list of polynomials, assuming these polynomials satisfy some reasonable conditions. This in particular implies lower bounds for the speed of many different classes of intersection graphs, which essentially match the known upper bounds. Our general result also gives essentially tight lower bounds for counting containment orders of various families of geometric objects, including circle orders and angle orders. Some of the applications presented in this paper are new, whereas others recover results of Alon-Scheinerman, Fox, McDiarmid-M\"{u}ller and Shi. Let $(X,h)$ be a compact and irreducible Hermitian complex space. This paper is devoted to various questions concerning the analytic K-homology of $(X,h)$. In the fist part, assuming either $\mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{sing}(X))=0$ or $\mathrm{dim}(X)=2$, we show that the rolled-up operator of the minimal $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex, denoted here $\overline{\eth}_{\mathrm{rel}}$, induces a class in $K_0 (X)\equiv KK_0(C(X),\mathbb{C})$. A similar result, assuming $\mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{sing}(X))=0$, is proved also for $\overline{\eth}_{\mathrm{abs}}$, the rolled-up operator of the maximal $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex. We then show that when $\mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{sing}(X))=0$ we have $[\overline{\eth}_{\mathrm{rel}}]=\pi_*[\overline{\eth}_M]$ with $\pi:M\rightarrow X$ an arbitrary resolution and with $[\overline{\eth}_M]\in K_0 (M)$ the analytic K-homology class induced by $\overline{\partial}+\overline{\partial}^t$ on $M$. In the second part of the paper we focus on complex projective varieties $(V,h)$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric. First, assuming $\dim(V)\leq 2$, we compare the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson K-homology class of $V$ with the class defined analytically through the rolled-up operator of any $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex. We show that there is no $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex on $(\mathrm{reg}(V),h)$ whose rolled-up operator induces a K-homology class that equals the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson class. Finally in the last part of the paper we prove that under suitable assumptions on $V$ the push-forward of $[\overline{\eth}_{\mathrm{rel}}]$ in the K-homology of the classifying space of the fundamental group of $V$ is a birational invariant., Comment: Final version. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $\alpha$ an automorphism of $R$. This paper addresses the question: when does the skew polynomial ring $S = R[\theta; \alpha]$ satisfy the property $(\diamond)$, that for every simple $S$-module $V$ the injective hull $E_S(V)$ of $V$ has all its finitely generated submodules Artinian. The question is largely reduced to the special case where $S$ is primitive, for which necessary and sufficient conditions are found, which however do not between them cover all possibilities. Nevertheless a complete characterisation is found when $R$ is an affine algebra over a field $k$ and $\alpha$ is a $k$-algebra automorphism - in this case $(\diamond)$ holds if and only if all simple $S$-modules are finite dimensional over $k$. This leads to a discussion, involving close study of some families of examples, of when this latter condition holds for affine $k$-algebras $S = R[\theta;\alpha]$. Nielsen realization problem for the mapping class group $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ asks whether the natural projection $p_g: \text{Homeo}_+(S_g)\to \text{Mod}(S_g)$ has a section. While all the previous results use torsion elements in an essential way, in this paper, we focus on the much more difficult problem of realization of torsion-free subgroups of $\text{Mod}(S_g)$. We study the question whether rational homogeneous spaces are rigid under Fano deformation. In other words, given any smooth connected family f:X -> Zof Fano manifolds, if one fiber is biholomorphic to a rational homogeneous space S, whether is f an S-fibration? The cases of Picard number one were studied in a series of papers by J.-M. Hwang and N. Mok. For higher Picard number cases, we notice that the Picard number of a rational homogeneous space G/P is less or equal to the rank of G. Recently A. Weber and J. A. Wisniewski proved that rational homogeneous spaces G/P with Picard numbers equal to the rank of G (i.e. complete flag manifolds) are rigid under Fano deformation. In this paper we show that the rational homogeneous space G/P is rigid under Fano deformation, providing that G is a simple algebraic group of type ADE, the Picard number equal to rank(G)-1 and G/P is not biholomorphic to F(1, 2, P^3) or F(1, 2, Q^6). The variety F(1, 2, P^3) is the set of flags of projective lines and planes in P^3, and F(1, 2, Q^6) is the set of flags of projective lines and planes in 6-dimensional smooth quadric hypersurface. We show that F(1, 2, P^3) have a unique Fano degeneration, which is explicitly constructed. The structure of possible Fano degeneration of F(1, 2, Q^6) is also described explicitly. To prove our rigidity result, we firstly show that the Fano deformation rigidity of a homogeneous space of type ADE can be implied by that property of suitable homogeneous submanifolds. Then we complete the proof via the study of Fano deformation rigidity of rational homogeneous spaces of small Picard numbers. As a byproduct, we also show the Fano deformation rigidity of other manifolds such as F(0, 1, ..., k_1, k_2, k_2+1, ..., n-1, P^n) and F(0, 1, ..., k_1, k_2, k_2+1, ..., n, Q^{2n+2}) with 0, 39 pages, Comments are welcome!

Markov numbers are integers that appear in the solution triples of the Diophantine equation, $x^2+y^2+z^2=3xyz$, called the Markov equation. A classical topic in number theory, these numbers are related to many areas of mathematics such as combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, approximation theory and cluster algebras. There is a natural map from the rational numbers between zero and one to the Markov numbers. In this paper, we prove two conjectures seen in Martin Aigner's book, Markov's theorem and 100 years of the uniqueness conjecture, that determine an ordering on subsets of the Markov numbers based on their corresponding rational. The proof relies on a relationship between Markov numbers and continuant polynomials which originates in Frobenius' 1913 paper., 16 pages

Let $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$ be a non-degenerate smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, codimension $e$, and degree $d$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we first show that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X) \leq d-e$, and classify the extremal and the next to extremal cases. Our result reduces the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture for the smooth case to the problem finding a Castelnuovo-type bound for normality. It is worth noting that McCullough-Peeva recently constructed counterexamples to the regularity conjecture by showing that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X)$ is not even bounded above by any polynomial function of $d$ when $X$ is not smooth. For a normality bound in the smooth case, we establish that $\text{reg}(X) \leq n(d-2)+1$, which improves previous results obtained by Mumford, Bertram-Ein-Lazarsfeld, and Noma. Finally, by generalizing Mumford's method on double point divisors, we prove that $\text{reg}(X) \leq d-1+m$, where $m$ is an invariant arising from double point divisors associated to outer general projections. Using double point divisors associated to inner projection, we also obtain a slightly better bound for $\text{reg}(X)$ under suitable assumptions., Comment: 23 pages. For a finite group $G$, let $\H_{g,G,\xi}$ be the stack of admissible $G$-covers $C\to D$ of stable curves with ramification data $\xi$, $g(C)=g$ and $g(D)=g'$. There are source and target morphisms $\phi\colon \H_{g,G,\xi}\to \M_{g,r}$ and $\delta\colon \H_{g,G,\xi}\to \M_{g',b}$, remembering the curves $C$ and $D$ together with the ramification or branch points of the cover respectively. In this paper we study admissible cover cycles, i.e. cycles of the form $\phi_* [\H_{g,G,\xi}]$. Examples include the fundamental classes of the loci of hyperelliptic or bielliptic curves $C$ with marked ramification points. The two main results of this paper are as follows: Firstly, for the gluing morphism $\xi_A\colon \M_A\to \M_{g,r}$ associated to to a stable graph $A$ we give a combinatorial formula for the pullback $\xi^*_A \phi_*[\H_{g,G,\xi}]$ in terms of spaces of admissible $G$-covers and $\psi$ classes. This allows us to describe the intersection of the cycles $\phi_*[\H_{g,G,\xi}]$ with tautological classes. Secondly, the pull-push $\delta_*\phi^*$ sends tautological classes to tautological classes and we also give a combinatorial description of this map in terms of standard generators of the tautological rings. We show how to use the pullbacks to algorithmically compute tautological expressions for cycles of the form $\phi_* [\H_{g,G,\xi}]$. In particular, we compute the classes $[\Hyp_5]$ and $[\Hyp_6]$ of the hyperelliptic loci in $\M_5$ and $\M_6$ and the class $[\B_4]$ of the bielliptic locus in $\M_4$., Comment: 69 pages, comments very welcome

Let $N$ (resp., $U$) be a manifold (resp., an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^m$). Let $f:N\to U$ and $F:U\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$ be an immersion and a $C^{\infty}$ mapping, respectively. Generally, the composition $F\circ f$ does not necessarily yield a mapping transverse to a given subfiber-bundle of $J^1(N,\mathbb{R}^\ell)$. Nevertheless, in this paper, for any $\mathcal{A}^1$-invariant fiber, we show that composing generic linearly perturbed mappings of $F$ and the given immersion $f$ yields a mapping transverse to the subfiber-bundle of $J^1(N,\mathbb{R}^\ell)$ with the given fiber. Moreover, we show a specialized transversality theorem on crossings of compositions of generic linearly perturbed mappings of a given mapping $F:U\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$ and a given injection $f:N\to U$. Extensions of the notions of polynomially and rationally convex hulls are introduced. Using these notions, a generalization of a result of Duval and Levenberg on polynomially convex hulls containing no analytic discs is presented. As a consequence it is shown that there exists a Cantor set $X$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$ with a nontrivial polynomially convex hull that contains no analytic discs. Using this Cantor set, it is shown that there exist arcs and curves in ${\mathbb C}^4$ with nontrivial polynomially convex hulls that contain no analytic discs. This answers a question raised a few years ago by Bercovici and can be regarded as a partial answer to a question raised by Wermer over 60 years ago. More generally, it is shown that every uncountable, compact subspace of a Euclidean space can be embedded as a subspace $X$ of ${\mathbb C}^N$, for some N, in such a way as to have a nontrivial polynomially convex hull that contains no analytic discs. In the case when the topological dimension of the space is at most one, $X$ can be chosen so as to have the stronger property that $P(X)$ has a dense set of invertible elements., Several revisions have been made to make the paper more succinct and focused. In the present paper, which is a direct sequel of our paper [12] joint with Roozbeh Hazrat, we prove unrelativised version of the standard commutator formula in the setting of Chevalley groups. Namely, let $\Phi$ be a reduced irreducible root system of rank $\ge 2$, let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $I,J$ be two ideals of $R$. We consider subgroups of the Chevalley group $G(\Phi,R)$ of type $\Phi$ over $R$. The unrelativised elementary subgroup $E(\Phi,I)$ of level $I$ is generated (as a group) by the elementary unipotents $x_{\alpha}(\xi)$, $\alpha\in\Phi$, $\xi\in I$, of level $I$. Obviously, in general $E(\Phi,I)$ has no chances to be normal in $E(\Phi,R)$, its normal closure in the absolute elementary subgroup $E(\Phi,R)$ is denoted by $E(\Phi,R,I)$. The main results of [12] implied that the commutator $\big[E(\Phi,I),E(\Phi,J)]$ is in fact normal in $E(\Phi,R)$. In the present paper we prove an unexpected result that in fact $\big[E(\Phi,I),E(\Phi,J)]=\big[E(\Phi,R,I),E(\Phi,R,J)\big]$. It follows that the standard commutator formula also holds in the unrelativised form, namely $\big[E(\Phi,I),C(\Phi,R,J)]=\big[E(\Phi,I),E(\Phi,J)\big]$, where $C(\Phi,R,I)$ is the full congruence subgroup of level $I$. We investigate generalised polynomials (i.e. polynomial-like expressions involving the use of the floor function) which take the value $0$ on all integers except for a set of density $0$. Our main result is that the set of integers where a sparse generalised polynomial takes non-zero value cannot contain a translate of an IP set. We also study some explicit constructions, and show that the characteristic functions of the Fibonacci and Tribonacci numbers are given by generalised polynomails. Finally, we show that any sufficiently sparse $\{0,1\}$-valued sequence is given by a generalised polynomial. Suppose that $n\geq 1$ and that, for all $i$ and $j$ with $1\leq i,j\leq n$ and $i\neq j$, $z_{ij}\in{\mathbb T}$ are given such that $z_{ji}=\overline{z}_{ij}$ for all $i\neq j$. If $V_1,\dotsc, V_n$ are isometries on a Hilbert space such that $V_i^\ast V_j^{\phantom{\ast}}\!=\overline{z}_{ij} V_j^{\phantom{\ast}}\!V_i^\ast$ for all $i\neq j$, then $(V_1,\dotsc,V_n)$ is called an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting isometries. The generators of non-commutative tori are well-known examples. In this paper, we establish a simultaneous Wold decomposition for $(V_1,\dotsc,V_n)$. This decomposition enables us to classify such $n$-tuples up to unitary equivalence. We show that the joint listing of a unitary equivalence class of a representation of each of the $2^n$ non-commutative tori that are naturally associated with the structure constants is a classifying invariant. A dilation theorem is also established, showing that an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting isometries can be extended to an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting unitary operators on an enveloping Hilbert space., Comment: A remark on the relation between the dilation theorem in this paper and other dilation theorems for multiple operators in the literature has been added. In \cite[Problem 72]{Fuchs60} Fuchs posed the problem of characterizing the groups which are the groups of units of commutative rings. In the following years, some partial answers have been given to this question in particular cases. In a previous paper \cite{DDcharp} we dealt with finite characteristic rings. In this paper we consider Fuchs' question for finite groups and we address this problem in two cases. Firstly, we study the case of torson-free rings and we obtain a complete classification of the finite groups of units which arise in this case. Secondly, we examine the case of characteristic zero rings obtaining, a pretty good description of the possible groups of units equipped with families of examples of both realizable and non-realizable groups. The main tools to deal with this general case are the Pearson and Schneider splitting of a ring \cite{PearsonSchneider70}, our previous results on finite characteristic rings \cite{DDcharp} and our classification of the groups of units of torsion-free rings. The aim of the present paper is to introduce a generalized quantum cluster character, which assigns to each object V of a finitary Abelian category C over a finite field FF_q and any sequence ii of simple objects in C the element X_{V,ii} of the corresponding algebra P_{C,ii} of q-polynomials. We prove that if C was hereditary, then the assignments V-> X_{V,ii} define algebra homomorphisms from the (dual) Hall-Ringel algebra of C to the P_{C,ii}, which generalize the well-known Feigin homomorphisms from the upper half of a quantum group to q-polynomial algebras. If C is the representation category of an acyclic valued quiver (Q,d) and ii=(ii_0,ii_0), where ii_0 is a repetition-free source-adapted sequence, then we prove that the ii-character X_{V,ii} equals the quantum cluster character X_V introduced earlier by the second author in [29] and [30]. Using this identification, we deduce a quantum cluster structure on the quantum unipotent cell corresponding to the square of a Coxeter element. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture from the joint paper [5] of the first author with A. Zelevinsky for such quantum unipotent cells. As a byproduct, we construct the quantum twist and prove that it preserves the triangular basis introduced by A. In this paper we develop the basic tools for a classification of Killing vector fields of constant length on pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous spaces. This extends a recent paper of M. Xu and J. A. Wolf, which classified the pairs $(M,\xi)$ where $M = G/H$ is a Riemannian normal homogeneous space, G is a compact simple Lie group, and $\xi \in \mathfrak{g}$ defines a nonzero Killing vector field of constant length on $M$. The method there was direct computation. Here we make use of the moment map $M \to \mathfrak{g}^{*}$ and the flag manifold structure of $\mathrm{Ad} (G) \xi$ to give a shorter, more geometric proof which does not require compactness and which is valid in the pseudo-Riemannian setting. In that context we break the classification problem into three parts. The first is easily settled. The second concerns the cases where $\xi$ is elliptic and $G$ is simple (but not necessarily compact); that case is our main result here. The third, which remains open, is a more combinatorial problem involving elements of the first two.

This paper proves that every oriented non-disk Seifert surface $F$ for a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is smoothly concordant to a Seifert surface $F^{\prime}$ for a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume. This gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Friedl and of Kawauchi that every knot is $S$-equivalent to a hyperbolic knot of arbitrarily large volume. The construction also gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Silver and Whitten and of Kawauchi that for every knot $K$ there is a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume and a map of pairs $f:(S^3,K^{\prime})\rightarrow (S^3,K)$ which induces an epimorphism on the knot groups. An example is given which shows that knot Floer homology is not an invariant of Seifert surface concordance. Jim Propp recently introduced a variant of chip-firing on a line where the chips are given distinct integer labels. Hopkins, McConville, and Propp showed that this process is confluent from some (but not all) initial configurations of chips. We recast their set-up in terms of root systems: labeled chip-firing can be seen as a root-firing process which allows the moves $\lambda \to \lambda + \alpha$ for $\alpha\in \Phi^{+}$ whenever $\langle\lambda,\alpha^\vee\rangle = 0$, where $\Phi^{+}$ is the set of positive roots of a root system of Type A and $\lambda$ is a weight of this root system. We are thus motivated to study the exact same root-firing process for an arbitrary root system. Actually, this central root-firing process is the subject of a sequel to this paper. In the present paper, we instead study the interval root-firing processes determined by $\lambda \to \lambda + \alpha$ for $\alpha\in \Phi^{+}$ whenever $\langle\lambda,\alpha^\vee\rangle \in [-k-1,k-1]$ or $\langle\lambda,\alpha^\vee\rangle \in [-k,k-1]$, for any $k \geq 0$. We prove that these interval-firing processes are always confluent, from any initial weight. We also show that there is a natural way to consistently label the stable points of these interval-firing processes across all values of $k$ so that the number of weights with given stabilization is a polynomial in $k$. Strictly subadditive, subadditive and weakly subadditive labelings of quivers were introduced by the second author, generalizing Vinberg's definition for undirected graphs. In our previous work we have shown that quivers with strictly subadditive labelings are exactly the quivers exhibiting Zamolodchikov periodicity. In this paper, we classify all quivers with subadditive labelings. We conjecture them to exhibit a certain form of integrability, namely, as the $T$-system dynamics proceeds, the values at each vertex satisfy a linear recurrence. Conversely, we show that every quiver integrable in this sense is necessarily one of the $19$ items in our classification. For the quivers of type $\hat A \otimes A$ we express the coefficients of the recurrences in terms of the partition functions for domino tilings of a cylinder, called \emph{Goncharov-Kenyon Hamiltonians}. We also consider tropical $T$-systems of type $\hat A \otimes A$ and explain how affine slices exhibit solitonic behavior, i.e. soliton resolution and speed conservation. Let $f\colon M\to N$ be a proper map between two aspherical compact orientable 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary. We assume that $N$ is not a closed graph-manifold. Suppose that $f$ induces an epimorphism on fundamental groups. We show that $f$ is homotopic to a homeomorphism if one of the following holds: either for any finite-index subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\pi_1(N)$ the ranks of $\Gamma$ and of $f_*^{-1}(\Gamma)$ agree, or for any finite cover $\tilde{N}$ of $N$ the Heegaard genus of $\tilde{N}$ and the Heegaard genus of the pull-back cover $\tilde{M}$ agree., Comment: We split the old version into two papers. In his 1990 Inventiones paper, P. Jones characterized subsets of rectifiable curves in the plane via a multiscale sum of $\beta$-numbers. These $\beta$-numbers are geometric quantities measuring how far a given set deviates from a best fitting line at each scale and location. Jones' result is a quantitative way of saying that a curve is rectifiable if and only if it has a tangent at almost every point. Moreover, computing this square sum for a curve returns the length of the curve up to multiplicative constant. K. Okikiolu extended his result from subsets of the plane to subsets of Euclidean space. G. David and S. Semmes extended the discussion to include sets of (integer) dimension larger than one, under the assumption of Ahlfors regularity and using a variant of Jones' $\beta$ numbers. In this paper we give a version of P. Jones' theorem for sets of arbitrary (integer) dimension lying in Euclidean space. We estimate the $d$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of a set in terms of an analogous sum of $\beta$-type numbers. There is no assumption of Ahlfors regularity, but rather, only of a lower bound on the Hausdorff content. We adapt David and Semmes' version of Jones' $\beta$-numbers by redefining them using a Choquet integral. A key tool in the proof is G. David and T. Toro's parametrization of Reifenberg flat sets (with holes)., Comment: Corrected more typos. The main result (roughly) is that if (H_i) converges weakly to H and if also f(H_i) converges weakly to f(H), for a single strictly convex continuous function f, then (H_i) must converge strongly to H. One application is that if f(pr(H)) = pr(f(H)), where pr denotes compression to a closed subspace M, then M must be invariant for H. A consequence of this is the verification of a conjecture of Arveson, that Theorem 9.4 of [Arv] remains true in the infinite dimensional case. And there are two applications to operator algebras. If h and f(h) are both quasimultipliers, then h must be a multiplier. Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group, H a reductive subgroup of G and X an affine G-variety. Let Y denote the set of fixed points of H in X, and N(H) the normalizer of H in G. In this paper we study the natural map from the quotient of Y by N(H) to the quotient of X by G induced by the inclusion of Y in X. We show that, given G and H, this map is a finite morphism for all G-varieties X if and only if H is G-completely reducible (in the sense defined by J-P. Serre); this was proved in characteristic zero by Luna in the 1970s. We discuss some applications and give a criterion for the map of quotients to be an isomorphism. We show how to extend some other results in Luna's paper to positive characteristic and also prove the following theorem. For a set of primes $\mathcal{P}$, let $\Psi(x, \mathcal{P})$ be the number of positive integers $n \leq x$ all of whose prime factors lie in $\mathcal{P}$. In this paper we classify the sets of primes $\mathcal{P}$ such that $\Psi(x, \mathcal{P})$ is within a constant factor of its expected value. This task was recently initiated by Granville, Koukoulopoulos and Matom\"aki and their main conjecture is proved in this paper. In particular our main theorem implies that, if not too many large primes are sieved out in the sense that \[ \sum_{\substack{p \in \mathcal{P} \\ x^{1/v} < p \leq x^{1/u}}} \frac{1}{p} \geq \frac{1 + \varepsilon}{u}, \] for some $\varepsilon > 0$ and $v \geq u \geq 1$, then \[ \Psi(x, \mathcal{P}) \gg_{\varepsilon, v} x \prod_{\substack{p \leq x\\ p \notin\mathcal{P}}} \left(1 - \frac{1}{p}\right). \], Comment: 23 pages

This work is motivated by the papers [EG85] and [Ngu15] in which the following two problems are solved. Let $\mathcal{O}$ is a finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra that is an integrally closed domain of characteristic zero, consider the following problems: (A) Fix $s$ that is integral over $\mathcal{O}$, describe all $t$ such that $\mathcal{O}[s]=\mathcal{O}[t]$. (B) Fix $s$ and $t$ that are integral over $\mathcal{O}$, describe all pairs $(m,n)\in\mathbb{N}^2$ such that $\mathcal{O}[s^m]=\mathcal{O}[t^n]$. In this paper, we solve these problems and provide a uniform bound for a certain "discriminant form equation" that is closely related to Problem (A) when $\mathcal{O}$ has characteristic $p>0$. While our general strategy roughly follows [EG85] and [Ngu15], many new delicate issues arise due to the presence of the Frobenius automorphisms $x\mapsto x^p$. Let $\mathbf{G}$ be one of the ind-groups $GL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$, $Sp(\infty)$ and $\mathbf{P}\subset \mathbf{G}$ be a splitting parabolic ind-subgroup. The ind-variety $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ has been identified with an ind-variety of generalized flags in the paper "Ind-varieties of generalized flags as homogeneous spaces for classical ind-groups" (Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, no. 55, 2935--2953) by I. Dimitrov and I. Penkov. In the present paper we define a Schubert cell on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ as a $\mathbf{B}$-orbit on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$, where $\mathbf{B}$ is any Borel ind-subgroup of $\mathbf{G}$ which intersects $\mathbf{P}$ in a maximal ind-torus. A significant difference with the finite-dimensional case is that in general $\mathbf{B}$ is not conjugate to an ind-subgroup of $\mathbf{P}$, whence $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ admits many non-conjugate Schubert decompositions. We study the basic properties of the Schubert cells, proving in particular that they are usual finite-dimensional cells or are isomorphic to affine ind-spaces. We then define Schubert ind-varieties as closures of Schubert cells and study the smoothness of Schubert ind-varieties. Our approach to Schubert ind-varieties differs from an earlier approach by H. Salmasian in "Direct limits of Schubert varieties and global sections of line bundles" (J. We study representations of segment type of groups Sp(n) and SO(2n+1, F) over a local non-archimedean field, which play a fundamental role in the constructions of discrete series, and obtain a complete description of the Jacquet modules of these representations. Also, we provide an alternative way for determination of Jacquet modules of strongly positive discrete series and a description of top Jacquet modules of general discrete series. The birational classification of varieties inevitably leads to the study of singularities. The types of singularities that occur in this context have been studied by Mori, Kollar, Reid, and others, beginning in the 1980s with the introduction of the Minimal Model Program. Normal singularities that are terminal, canonical, log terminal, and log canonical, and their non-normal counterparts, are typically studied by using a resolution of singularities (or a semi-resolution), and finding numerical conditions that relate the canonical class of the variety to that of its resolution. In order to do this, it has been assumed that a variety X is has a $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier canonical class: some multiple $$mK_X$$ of the canonical class is Cartier. In particular, this divisor can be pulled back under a resolution $$f: Y \rightarrow X$$ by pulling back its local sections. Then one has a relation $$K_Y \sim \frac{1}{m}f^*(mK_X) + \sum a_iE_i$$ . It is then the coefficients of the exceptional divisors $$E_i$$ that determine the type of singularities that belong to X. It might be asked whether this $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier hypothesis is necessary in studying singularities in birational classification. de Fernex and Hacon (Compos Math 145:393–414, 2009) construct a boundary divisor $$\Delta $$ for arbitrary normal varieties, the resulting divisor $$K_X + \Delta $$ being $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier even though $$K_X$$ itself is not. This they call (for reasons that will be made clear) an m-compatible boundary for X, and they proceed to show that the singularities defined in terms of the pair $$(X,\Delta )$$ are none other than the singularities just described, when $$K_X$$ happens to be $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier. Thus, a wider context exists within which one can study singularities of the above types. In the present paper, we extend the results of de Fernex and Hacon (Compos Math 145:393–414, 2009) still further, to include demi-normal varieties without a $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier canonical class. Our main result is that m-compatible boundaries exist for demi-normal varieties (Theorem 1.1). This theorem provides a link between the theory of singularities for arbitrary demi-normal varieites (whose canonical class may not $$\hbox {be } {\mathbb {Q}}$$ -Cartier), that theory being developed in the present paper, and the established theory of singularities of pairs.

Let G be a finite group such that \(\mathop {{\text {SL}}}\nolimits (n,q)\subseteq G \subseteq \mathop {{\text {GL}}}\nolimits (n,q)\) and Z be a central subgroup of G. In this paper we determine the group T(G / Z) consisting of the equivalence classes of endotrivial k(G / Z)-modules where k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p such that p does not divide q. The results in this paper complete the classification of endotrivial modules for all finite groups of (untwisted) Lie type A, initiated earlier by the authors.

This is the first paper in a general program to automate skein theoretic arguments. In this paper, we study skein theoretic invariants of planar trivalent graphs. Equivalently, we classify trivalent categories, which are nondegenerate pivotal tensor categories over $\mathbb C$ generated by a symmetric self-dual simple object $X$ and a rotationally invariant morphism $1 \rightarrow X \otimes X \otimes X$. Our main result is that the only trivalent categories with $\dim \operatorname{Hom}(1, X^{\otimes n})$ bounded by $1,0,1,1,4,11,40$ for $0 \leq n \leq 6$ are quantum $SO(3)$, quantum $G_2$, a one-parameter family of free products of certain Temperley-Lieb categories (which we call ABA categories), and the $H3$ Haagerup fusion category. We also prove similar results where the map $1 \rightarrow X^{\otimes 3}$ is not rotationally invariant, and we give a complete classification of nondegenerate braided trivalent categories with dimensions of invariant spaces bounded by $1,0,1,1,4$. Let $M$ be a $d\times d$ contracting matrix. In this paper we consider the self-affine iterated function system $\{Mv-u, Mv+u\}$, where $u$ is a cyclic vector. Our main result is as follows: if $|\det M|\ge 2^{-1/d}$, then the attractor $A_M$ has non-empty interior. We also consider the set $\mathcal U_M$ of points in $A_M$ which have a unique address. We show that unless $M$ belongs to a very special (non-generic) class, the Hausdorff dimension of $\mathcal U_M$ is positive. The paper is a sequel to the paper "Application of localization to the multivariate moment problem" by the same author. A new criterion is presented for a positive semidefinite linear functional on the real polynomial algebra to correspond to a positive Borel measure on real n-space. The criterion is stronger than Nussbaum's criterion and is similar in nature to a criterion of Schmudgen. It is also explained how the criterion allows one to understand the support of the associated measure in terms of the non-negativity of the linear functional on a quadratic module of the real polynomial algebra. This latter result extends a result of Lasserre. The techniques employed are the same localization techniques employed already in two earlier papers by the same author., Comment: 5 pages

The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of the finitely generated subgroups of a family of branch groups, which includes the first Grigorchuk group and the Gupta-Sidki 3-group. This description is made via the notion of block subgroup. We then use this to show that all groups in the above family are subgroup separable (LERF). We consider products of an independent and identically distributed sequence in a set $\{f_1,\ldots ,f_m\}$ of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We can naturally associate a Lyapunov exponent $\lambda $ . Under few assumptions, it is known that $\lambda \leq 0$ and that the equality holds if and only if $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are simultaneously conjugated to rotations. In this paper, we state a quantitative version of this fact in the case where $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are $C^k$ perturbations of rotations with rotation numbers $\rho (f_1),\ldots ,\rho (f_m)$ satisfying a simultaneous diophantine condition in the sense of Moser [On commuting circle mappings and simultaneous diophantine approximations. Math. Z.205(1) (1990), 105–121]: we give a precise estimate of $\lambda $ (Taylor expansion) and we prove that there exist a diffeomorphism g and rotations $r_i$ such that $\mbox {dist}(gf_ig^{-1},r_i)\ll |\lambda |^{{1}/{2}}$ for $i=1,\ldots , m$ . We also state analogous results for random products of $2\times 2$ matrices, without any diophantine condition.
