There are similarities between Drinfeld modules and abelian varieties. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these similarities in terms of supersingularity. More specifically, we provide explicit formulas of Hasse invariants (or, equivalently, of supersingular polynomials) for Drinfeld modules, which is a continuation of the 2013 paper by Ahmad El-Guindy and Matthew A. Papanikolas. We present several supersingular Drinfeld modules as an application.

The variability and interdependence of local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity, which is a measure for the sinuosity of shortest transportation paths, is investigated at the example of the microstructure in sack paper. By means of statistical image analysis, these two morphological characteristics are computed for several cutouts of 3D image data obtained by X-ray microcomputed tomography. Considering cutouts of different sizes allows us to study the influence of the sample size on the local variability of the considered characteristics. Moreover, the interdependence between local porosity and local mean geodesic tortuosity is quantified by modeling their joint distribution parametrically using Archimedean copulas. It turns out that the family of Gumbel copulas is an appropriate model type, which is formally validated by a goodness of fit test. Besides mean geodesic tortuosity, we consider further related morphological characteristics, describing the sinuosity of those shortest transportation paths, whose minimum diameter exceeds a predefined threshold. Moreover, we show that the copula approach investigated in this paper can also be used to quantify the negative correlation between local porosity and these modified versions of local mean geodesic tortuosity. Our results elucidate the impact of local porosity on various kinds of morphological characteristics, which are not experimentally accessible and which are important for local air permeance – a key property of sack paper.

In this short article, we mainly give some examples to prove that the main results of Section 4 of the paper [W. S. Liao and J. Wu, Ann. Func. Anal. 6 (2015), no. 3, 191–202] are not true. Then we give the corrected matrix inequalities.

Very recently Bordelles, Dai, Heyman, Pan and Shparlinski studied asymptotic behaviour of the quantity $$\begin{aligned} S_f(x) := \sum _{n\leqslant x} f\left( \left[ \frac{x}{n}\right] \right) , \end{aligned}$$and established some asymptotic formulas for $$S_f(x)$$ under three different types of assumptions on f. In this note we offer some criticism on the paper “On an identity for zeros of Bessel functions” by Baricz et al. [3] . The paper gives identities of type Stieltjes–Calogero for the sums of reciprocals of differences of fourth powers of zeros of Bessel functions. Although interesting in principle, by containing one too many sums of similar complexity the identities fail to convey the true spirit of the work of Stieltjes and Calogero. We rectify this by providing what we think is the correct type of identity for the above-said sums, in the general setup of entire functions of order

The paper alluded to in the title contains the following striking result: Let $I$ be the unit interval and $\Delta$ the Cantor set. If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. Our examples are rather specific and actually in all cases X is isomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$ if $K$ is a metric compactum of finite covering dimension., Comment: 4 pages

The purpose of this note is to discuss how paper folding can be used to find the exact trigonometric ratios of the following four angles: 22.5°, 67.5°, 27°, and 63°.

In a recent paper referred to in the title, the author used the concept of quasi self-adjointness to obtain conservation laws for a system of the ( 2 + 1 ) -dimensional Bogoyavlensky–Konopelchenko equation. Apart from the adjoint system of equations, all the results on the quasi self-adjointness and the subsequent conservation laws obtained are inaccurate. In this comment, we clarify these inaccuracies and also generate conservation laws for a potential form of the underlying equation through Noether theorem.

Propositions 1.1–1.3 stated below contribute to results and certain problems considered in [E-S], on the behavior of products $$\Pi^n_1(1-z^{a_j}),1\leq{a_1}...\leq{a_n}$$ integers. In the discussion below, {a1,..., an} will be either a proportional subset of {1,..., n} or a set of large arithmetic diameter.

We correct a mistake in a lemma in the paper cited in the title and show that it did not affect any of the other results of the paper. To this end, we prove results on linearly disjoint field extensions that do not seem to be commonly known. We give an example to show that a separability assumption in one of these results cannot be dropped (doing so had led to the mistake). Further, we discuss recent generalizations of the original classification of defect extensions.

These notes aim to provide a deeper insight on the specifics of two articles dealing with chemotaxis models with nonlinear production. More precisely, we are referring to the papers “Boundedness of solutions to a quasilinear parabolic–parabolic chemotaxis model with nonlinear signal production” by Tao et al. (2019) [2] and “Boundedness for a fully parabolic Keller–Segel model with sublinear segregation and superlinear aggregation” by Frassu and Viglialoro (2021) [1] . These works, independently published in these last years, present results leaving open room for further improvement. Indeed, in the first a gap in the proof of the main claim appears, whereas the cornerstone assumption in the second is not sharp. In these pages we give a more complete picture to the relative underlying comprehension.

In this short review note we show that the new proof of theorem 1.1 given by Zheng Jie Sun and Ling Zhu in the paper Simple proofs of the Cusa-Huygens-type and Becker-Stark-type inequalities is logically incorrect and present another simple proof of the same.

In 1903, Epstein published his proof of meromorphic continuation and a functional equation for Dirichlet series associated with quadratic forms, now called Epstein zeta-functions. However, already in 1889 (or even earlier) Hurwitz was aware of these results as his mathematical diaries and some unpublished notes (in an almost final form) found in his estate at the ETH Zurich show. In this article we present and analyze Hurwitz's notes and compare his reasoning with Epstein's paper in detail.

We thank Holger Rootzen and Dmitrii Zholud’s for their stimulating work, that led us to further investigate the problem of best fitting the human life span distribution. Their assertion “human life is unlimited but short” is based on their conclusion that the exponential model is the best to fit. We provide results based on standard Extreme Value approaches, the Block Maxima and Peaks-over-Threshold, and on the whole data available in the IDL database (IDL A, B validations and GRG). We verify that negative values for the extreme value index are more likely, supporting the conclusion that models with finite endpoint seem better to fit to the human life span distribution.

The translation into English of Aleksandr Yakovlevich Khinchin's (1894–1959) 1926 paper entitled ‘Ideas of intuitionism and the struggle for a subject matter in contemporary mathematics’ is made available for the first time. Here, Khinchin presented the famous foundational debate between L.E.J. Brouwer and David Hilbert of the 1920s in terms of a search for a mathematics with content. His main aim seems to have been to make intuitionism ideologically acceptable to his audience at the Communist Academy by means of the claim that insofar as Brouwer's intuitionism had a clear ‘subject matter’ and Hilbert's new program was a concession to intuitionism, the alleged victory of intuitionism not only implied the defeat of ‘empty’ formalism, but also showed the compatibility and affinity of Marxism with the newest developments in modern mathematics. This introduction provides a tentative exploration of the issue of what was tactical (or due to ideological pressure) and what was real scientific interest (or due to ignorance) (or what was both) in Khinchin's 1926 paper in the form of a detailed commentary, especially, on the tactical side of his presentation of the positions of Brouwer and Hilbert.

One of the simplest examples of a robust heteroclinic cycle involves three saddle equilibria: each one is unstable to the next in turn, and connections from one to the next occur within invariant subspaces. Such a situation can be described by a third-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), and typical trajectories approach each equilibrium point in turn, spending progressively longer to cycle around the three points but never stopping. This cycle has been invoked as a model of cyclic competition between populations adopting three strategies, characterised as Rock, Paper and Scissors. When spatial distribution and mobility of the populations is taken into account, waves of Rock can invade regions of Scissors, only to be invaded by Paper in turn. The dynamics is described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) that has travelling wave (in one dimension) and spiral (in two dimensions) solutions. In this paper, we explore how the robust heteroclinic cycle in the ODE manifests itself in the PDEs. Taking the wavespeed as a parameter, and moving into a travelling frame, the PDEs reduce to a sixth-order set of ODEs, in which travelling waves are created in a Hopf bifurcation and are destroyed in three different heteroclinic bifurcations, depending on parameters, as the travelling wave approaches the heteroclinic cycle. We explore the three different heteroclinic bifurcations, none of which have been observed in the context of robust heteroclinic cycles previously. These results are an important step towards a full understanding of the spiral patterns found in two dimensions, with possible application to travelling waves and spirals in other population dynamics models., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures

Some recent analytical papers have explored limiting behaviors of Landau-deGennes models for liquid crystals in certain extreme ranges of the model parameters: limits of "vanishing elasticity" (in the language of some of these papers) and "low-temperature limits." We use simple scaling analysis to show that these limits are properly interpreted as limits in which geometric length scales (such as the size of the domain containing the liquid crystal material) become large compared to intrinsic length scales (such as correlation lengths or coherence lengths, which determine defect core sizes). This represents the natural passage from a mesoscopic model to a macroscopic model and is analogous to a "London limit" in the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity or a "large-body limit" in the Landau-Lifshitz theory of ferromagnetism. In this paper we consider, discuss and slightly complement recent fixed point results for mappings in b-metric spaces established by Sintunavarat (J Fixed Point Theory Appl 18:397–416, 2016). Thus, all our results are with shorter proofs. In addition, an application to integral equations is given to illustrate the usability of our approach.

This note is devoted to a small, but essential, extension of Theorem 2.1 of our recent paper (LeCrone et al. J Evolut Equ 14:509–533 2014). The improvement is explained in “The improvement” section and proved in “Proof of the main result” section. The importance of the extension is demonstrated in “Application to the Navier–Stokes equations” section with an application to the Navier–Stokes system in critical \(L_q\)-spaces.

In this paper we construct two limit cycles with a heteroclinic polycycle for the three-dimensional continuous model of the rockscissorspaper (RSP) game between bacteriocin producing bacteria. Our construction gives a partial answer to an open question posed by Neumann and Schuster (2007) concerning how many limit cycles can coexist for the RSP game.

In their celebrated paper (Furst et al., Math. Syst. Theory 17(1), 13---27 (12)), Furst, Saxe, and Sipser used random restrictions to reveal the weakness of Boolean circuits of bounded depth, establishing that constant-depth and polynomial-size circuits cannot compute the parity function. Such local restrictions have played important roles and have found many applications in complexity analysis and algorithm design over the past three decades. In this article, we give a brief overview of two intriguing applications of local restrictions: the first one is for the Isomorphism Conjecture and the second one is for moderately exponential time algorithms for the Boolean formula satisfiability problem.

We are studying topological properties of the Julia set of the map F ( z , p ) = ( ( 2 z p + 1 − 1 ) 2 , ( p − 1 p + 1 ) 2 ) F(z, p)=\left (\left (\frac {2z}{p+1}-1\right )^2, \left (\frac {p-1}{p+1}\right )^2\right ) of the complex projective plane P C 2 \mathbb {P}\mathbb {C}^2 to itself. We show a relation between this rational function and an uncountable family of “paper folding” plane filling curves.

We study a class of algebras we regard as generalized Rock-Paper-Scissors games. We determine when such algebras can exist, show that these algebras generate the varieties generated by hypertournament algebras, count these algebras, study their automorphisms, and determine their congruence lattices. While 3-SAT is NP-hard, 2-SAT is solvable in polynomial time. Austrin, Guruswami, and H\r{a}stad roved a result known as "$(2+\varepsilon)$-SAT is NP-hard" [FOCS'14/SICOMP'17]. They showed that the problem of distinguishing k-CNF formulas that are g-satisfiable (i.e. some assignment satisfies at least g literals in every clause) from those that are not even 1-satisfiable is NP-hard if $\frac{g}{k} < \frac{1}{2}$ and is in P otherwise. We study a generalisation of SAT on arbitrary finite domains, with clauses that are disjunctions of unary constraints, and establish analogous behaviour. Thus we give a dichotomy for a natural fragment of promise constraint satisfaction problems (PCSPs) on arbitrary finite domains. The hardness side is proved using the algebraic approach, via a new general NP-hardness criterion on polymorphisms of the problem, based on a gap version of the Layered Label Cover problem. In several recent papers, attempts have been made to apply Wardowski's method of $F$-contractions in order to obtain fixed point results for single and multivalued mappings in $b$-metric spaces. In this article, it is shown that in most cases the conditions imposed on respective mappings are too strong and that the results can be obtained directly, i.e., without using most of the properties of auxiliary function $F$.

This paper is an attempt to present the methodologically correct approach of the anisotropy-based theory for discrete-time systems with multiplicative noise. A formulation of sufficient conditions of boundedness of the anisotropic norm is the main goal of this paper. As it is shown, this problem can be reduced to the convex optimization problem. A simple numerical example to illustrate the solution procedure is given.

For any discrete valuation ring R, any R-linear mapping u from an R-module E into an R-module F and any \(y_0\in F\), a necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the equation \(u(x)=y_0\) is established, and an application of this result is presented.

In this note we show that the presented proof of [1, th. 12] , being based on a false statement appearing in this proof, is not viable for all of the proclaimed values of the involved parameters. We also determine necessary and sufficient conditions for those parameters, which provides that the considered statement, and therefore [1, th. 12] itself, still remains valid.

We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad–Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result (Gavrilov in A steady Euler flow with compact support. Geom Funct Anal 29(1):90–197, [Gav19]).

In this note, we give affirmative answers to two open problems posed by Agarwal et al. in the paper (J Optim Theory Appl 163(2):482---490, 2014).

Assume that A and G are finite groups of coprime orders such that A acts on G via automorphisms. Let p be a prime. The following coprime action version of a well-known theorem of Ito about the structure of a minimal non-p-nilpotent groups is proved: if every maximal A-invariant subgroup of G is p-nilpotent, then G is p-soluble. If, moreover, G is not p-nilpotent, then G must be soluble. Some earlier results about coprime action are consequences of this theorem.

Let [Formula: see text] be a projective variety of dimension [Formula: see text] over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We prove a Fujiki–Lieberman type theorem on the structure of the automorphism group of [Formula: see text]. Let [Formula: see text] be a group of zero entropy automorphisms of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] the set of elements in [Formula: see text] which are isotopic to the identity. We show that after replacing [Formula: see text] by a suitable finite-index subgroup, [Formula: see text] is a unipotent group of the derived length at most [Formula: see text]. This result was first proved by Dinh et al. for compact Kähler manifolds.

In this short note, it is shown that there is a gap in the proof of Theorem 11 in the paper of Meyer and Neutsch (J. of Algebra, 1993). We prove, nevertheless, that the statement of the theorem is true and fix the proof by using a certain extremal property of idempotents which has an independent interest., 6 pages, submitted 2017
