Zirconia ceramics are widely used in medical and dental industry due to their excellent biocompatibility and aesthetics. In this respect, stereolithography apparatus (SLA) is popular method for 3D printing of ceramic suspensions. However, deformation and cracking of SLA-printed ceramics caused by residual stress seriously limit their application in clinical dentistry. In this investigation, 75 wt. % ZrO2 suspensions were successfully prepared, and ZrO2 ceramic composites were produced via SLA 3D printing. Special attention was paid to the establishment of theoretical model of residual stress in SLA. According to results, the development of residual stress in SLA-printed ceramics depended on various parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, and radius of curvature, as well as linear shrinkage, stress wave, and pure bending stress. The variations of surface residual stress at different laser beam powers, scan speeds, and radii of curvature were found to be consistent with that predicted theoretically. The errors between the theoretical and experimental value were 2.8%, 1.4%, 4.3%, 5.3%, and 4.2%, respectively, when the laser beam powers increased in turn. The errors between the theoretical and the experimental value were 2.5%, 3.9%, 2.8%,2.4%, and 3.8%, respectively, when the scan speeds increased in turn. Thus, theoretical model established was proved high accuracy and conformity to 3D printing standards.

In this work, novel antibacterial cellulose diacetate/poly(ethylenimine)/hyaluronic acid (CDA/PEI/HA) composite three-dimension (3D) scaffolds were prepared through electrospinning and post-processing. Firstly, CDA/PEI 2D composite nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning, and then the CDA/PEI/HA 3D composite scaffolds were fabricated by post-processing and freeze-drying of CDA/PEI membranes. In particular, HA was added to improve the biocompatibility of composite scaffolds. Compared with CDA/PEI scaffolds, CDA/PEI/HA composite scaffolds showed higher water absorbing rate, higher water retention rate and higher mechanical strength. Moreover, CDA/PEI/HA composite scaffolds with abundant positive charge were benefit for improving antibacterial activity. CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds with biology function of HA were benefit for improving hemocompatibility and cell proliferation of CDA/PEI scaffolds. In summary, antibacterial CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds could protect wound from bacterial infection, improve cellular behavior and accelerate wound healing. Thus, CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds could be potential application for wound dressing.

Temperature-responsive resistance transition behaviors of the melamine sponges wrapped with different graphene oxide derivatives (i.e. nanoribbon, wide-ribbon and sheet) were investigated. Melamine sponge composites coated by three types of GO derivatives were prepared by a simple dip-coating approach. All these composites show good mechanical flexibility and reliability (almost unchanged compressive stress at 70 % strain after 100 cycles), high hydrophobicity (water contact angle >120°), excellent flame resistance (self-extinguishing) and structural stability even after burning, which was used to construct the resistance-based fire alarm/warning sensor. Notably, the different resistance response behaviors of such sensors are strongly dependent on the GO size and network formed on the MF skeleton surface. Typically, at a fixed high temperature of ∼350 ℃, the three fire alarm sensors show different response time (to trigger the alarm light) of 6.3, 8.4 and 11.1 s for nanoribbon, wide-ribbon and sheet at the same concentration, respectively. The structural observation and chemical analysis demonstrated that the discrepancy of temperature-responsive resistance transition behaviors of various GO derivatives was strongly determined by their different thermal reduction degrees during the high-temperature or flame treating process. This work offers a design and development for construction of smart fire alarm device for potential fire prevention and safety applications.

Multifunctional nanodevices have shown great promise as robust tools in cancer theranostics. Carbon nanohorns (CNHs) of large specific surface area, low toxicity and unique physicochemical properties are among one of ideal platforms to fabricate the nanodevices. Herein, we develop a water-dispersible carbon nanohorn−polyglycerol−gold (CNH-PG-Au) nanohybrid through surface engineering of CNHs, which is further loaded with chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) to afford DOX@CNH-PG-Au nanodevice. Benefiting from the excellent hydrophilicity of PG, as-prepared multifunctional DOX@CNH-PG-Au possesses good aqueous dispersibility and colloidal stability enabling biomedical applications. DOX@CNH-PG-Au nanoparticles are taken up by 4T1 mouse breast cancer cells and mainly disperse in the lysosomes, where the mild acidic condition promotes the release of DOX. DOX@CNH-PG-Au induces more cell apoptosis under X-ray irradiation than DOX@CNH-PG of the same DOX concentrations, which is attributed to increased DNA damage by synergistic effect of DNA intercalation of DOX and radiosensitization of Au nanoparticles. Upon intravenous administration, DOX@CNH-PG-Au nanoparticles steadily accumulate in 4T1 tumor through enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, and the tumor can be clearly observed by photoacoustic imaging. In vivo tumor treatment using DOX@CNH-PG-Au together with X-ray irradiation effectively inhibits tumor growth through radiochemotherapy. Our work demonstrates the great potential of DOX@CNH-PG-Au nanodevice in cancer theranostics.

Single-atom catalysis recently attracts great attentions, however, whether single atom or their nanoparticle (NP) has the advantage in its intrinsic activity remains under heated debate. Ag/Al2O3 is a widely used catalyst for many catalytic reactions, while the effect of Ag particle size on the activity is seldom investigated due to the great difficulty in synthesizing single atom Ag and Ag clusters/particles with different sizes. Herein, we firstly prepared an atomically dispersed Ag/Al2O3 catalyst using a nano-sized γ-Al2O3 as the support, subsequently obtained a series of Ag0/Al2O3 catalysts with different Ag particle sizes by H2 reducing single-atom Ag/Al2O3 catalyst at various temperatures. The Ag0/Al2O3 treated at 600 °C demonstrated superior CO oxidation performance over single-atom Ag/Al2O3 and the Ag/Al2O3 treated at 400 and 800 °C. Based on experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, we reveal that the larger Ag0 particle is beneficial to oxygen activation and improves the valence stability during oxidation reaction, while the aggregation of Ag0 particle also accordingly decreases the concentration of surface active sites, hence, there is an optimum Ag0 particle size. Our findings clearly confirm that Ag0 nanoparticle has the advantage over single-atom Ag species in its intrinsic activity for CO oxidation.

Compared to other crops, maize production demands relatively high temperatures. However, temperatures exceeding 35°C lead to adverse effects on maize yield. High temperatures (≥ 35°C) are consistently experienced by summer maize during its reproductive growth stage in the North China Plain, which is likely to cause irreversible crop damage. This study investigated the effects of elevating temperature (ET) treatment on the yield component of summer maize, beginning at the 9th unfolding leaf stage and ending at the tasseling stage. Results demonstrated that continuous ET led to a decrease in the elongation rate and activity of silks and an elongated interval between anthesis and silking stages, and eventually decreased grain number at ear tip and reduced yield. Although continuous ET before tasseling damaged the anther structure, reduced pollen activity, delayed the start of the pollen shedding stage, and shortened the pollen shedding time, it was inferred, based on phenotypical and physiological traits, that continuous ET after the 9th unfolding leaf stage influenced ears and therefore may have more significant impacts. Overall, when maize plants were exposed to ET treatment in the ear reproductive development stage, the growth of ears and tassels was blocked, which increased the occurrence of barren ear tips and led to large yield losses.

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a two-dimensional polymer semiconductor material, has good semiconductor properties, suitable electronic energy band structure, excellent physical and chemical stability. It is widely used in the field of energy and materials science such as photoelectric conversion. In this paper, the progress of g-C3N4 in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) and perovskite solar cells (PSC) was reviewed. As a new semiconductor material, g-C3N4 has the advantages of simple preparation, abundant amino and Lewis basic groups. Therefore, on the basis of excellent structure of g-C3N4, its electronic and optical properties are utilized to further expand its application in the field of photoelectric conversion.

Carbon nitride (CN) polymer is considered as a potential material for photocatalysis, but surfers from the low photoconversion efficiency due to its high defect density. Although the defects can be limited through the crystallization of CN, the photocatalytic activity of single-component photocatalyst is still restricted by the recombination of photoexcited carriers. In our work, the ordered Schottky heterojunction of heptazine-based crystalline carbon nitride (HCN) and Ti3C2 MXene was successfully prepared through ionothermal method. The HCN/Ti3C2 composites exhibit higher photocatalytic performance than pristine HCN. Particularly, the HCNT20 sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic H2 evolution activity, which is about 8 and 2 times higher than that of bulk CN and pristine HCN, respectively. The results of charge transfer dynamics and DFT calculation reveal that the photocatalytic enhancement mechanism is primarily attributed to the synergistic effects of crystallization of CN, excellent conductivity of Ti3C2 and well-constructed Schottky heterojunction.

Bronsted acid-catalyzed direct C(sp2)-H alkylation of N-heteroaromatics with cyclic ethers via a cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction in the presence of benzoyl peroxide was developed. This methodology successfully provided an easy access to a variety of alkyl-substituted quinoxaline, benzoimidazole, pyrazine, pyrimidine, quinoline, isoquinoline, and pyridine derivatives in up to 94% yield under metal-free conditions.

Yttrium borides have attracted much attention for their superconducting and high chemical stability. However, the fundamental knowledge of the mechanical properties and hardness of yttrium borides is rather lack. Here, we performed a systematic investigation on yttrium borides with various stoichiometries based on an unbiased CALYPSO structure search method and first-principles calculations. A new YB6 compound with R3m hexagonal structure is observed, which is more stable than the experimental synthesized Pm3m phase. The calculated formation enthalpy, elastic constants, and phonon dispersions distinctly show that the R3m-YB6 is energetically, mechanically, and dynamically stable. The density of states and electronic band structure reveal that all the stable yttrium borides are metallic. Based on a semiempirical method, the Vicker hardness of R3m-YB6 is expectant to be 37.0 GPa, indicating it is a potential ultrahard metal. Our results provide insights for future synthesis and design of new type functional materials.

It is well-known that the Kadec-Klee property is an important property in the geometry of Banach spaces. It is closely connected with the approximation compactness and fixed point property of non-expansive mappings. In this paper, a criterion for Musielak-Orlicz function spaces equipped with the Orlicz norm to have the Kadec-Klee property are given. As a corollary, we obtain that a class of non-reflexive Musielak-Orlicz function spaces have the Fixed Point property.

T-junction is widely used as a phase separation component to separate two-phase flow because of its simple structure and low cost. Previous studies suggest that an increase in the number of T-junction branches is conducive to raise phase separation efficiency. In this paper, the pressure distribution and phase separation performance of two-phase flow of R134a in horizontal double T-junctions are studied. The phase separation performance between two branches is compared. The parameters including inlet quality (0.3-0.6), inlet mass flow rate (10.0 g s−1-25.0 g s−1), diameter ratio (1, 0.75) and the distance between two branches (0.3 m-2.6 m) are studied. The inlet mass flow rate has significant influence on the phase separation, and the separation performance reaches best when it is 10.0 g s−1. Results show that the change of parameters has greater influence on the phase separation performance of the second branch compared with the first branch. When the distance between branches is 2.0 m, the total phase separation capacity of the branches reaches the best. By comparing the phase separation of branches, it can be found that when the distance increases gradually, the phase separation performance of the second branch first increases and then decreases, indicating that there is a specific distance that maximizes the gas phase separation efficiency of branches. The optimal distance is also related to the mass flow ratio of the second branch. Therefore, an empirical correlation equation which can accurately predict the gas phase separation efficiency of the second branch is proposed.

The galvanic distortion caused by small-scale electrical inhomogeneities near the shallow surface perturbs the overall frequency response curve of magnetotelluric (MT) records and adversely affects the imaging of deep electrical structures. Various efforts have been made to suppress the galvanic distortion, but they are still difficult to use in complex regional structures. To effectively recover the deeper electrical structures, we develop an inversion technique in which the shallow electrical structures are constrained by other types of electromagnetic data and used as part of the prior model to remove the galvanic distortion. When other types of electromagnetic data are unavailable, we can also simulate the galvanic distortion by using a refined forward mesh and putting small-scale electrical resistivity anomalies beneath the surface. We validate our inversion approach using synthetic examples and apply it to field MT data collected from the northern Trans North China Orogen. A three-dimensional electrical resistivity model is obtained based on the prior model designed according to the locations of distorted MT stations. In our resulting model, artifacts caused by galvanic distortion are removed as compared to previous work. We demonstrate that our method is effective in improving the reliability of MT inversions in complex regions, leading to better interpretations of deep electrical structures.

Two rearranged triterpenoids, representing new subtypes of pentacyclic triterpenoids, with unique 6/6/6/7/5 and 6/6/5/6/6/6 ring systems were isolated from Alstonia scholaris. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Both compounds exhibited potent antihyperuricemic bioactivity in vitro and in vivo.

We report herein the asymmetric total synthesis of norzoanthamine using radical reactions as key steps for rapid access to the congested carbocyclic core, which is the major synthetic challenge for most zoanthamine alkaloids. (1) The Ueno-Stork radical cyclization was applied to construct the adjacent quaternary centers at the C-9 and C-22 positions; (2) a Co-catalyzed HAT radical reaction was successfully applied to construct the quaternary center at C-12 via Csp3 -Csp2 bond formation; (3) a Mn-catalyzed HAT radical reaction was used to stereospecifically reduce the tetra-substituted olefin (C13=C18) and install the contiguous stereocenters in proximity to the quaternary center. A one-pot bio-inspired cyclization step was finally applied to forge the unstable bis-amino acetal skeleton. Our approach can precisely control the stereochemistry of seven vicinal stereocenters and effectively construct the highly congested heptacyclic skeleton.

Sophora davidii is an ideal material for studying the response to low phosphorus (P) because of its strong adaptability to low-P habitats. However, to date, there has been no research on S. davidii under low-P stress. In this paper, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of S. davidii were studied on days 3 and 9 of low-P treatment by transcriptome sequencing and analysed with GO and KEGG analyses. Under low-P stress, the contents of antioxidants (POD, SOD and CAT), osmotic adjusters (soluble protein and proline) and anthocyanin increased. Under low-P and normal-P conditions, 323 (209 and 114 of whose expression was upregulated and downregulated, respectively) and 504 DEGs (280 and 224 of whose expression was upregulated and downregulated, respectively) were found in S. davidii on days 3 and 9, respectively. The analysis of transcriptomics data revealed certain aspects of genes regulation under low-P stress. First, several key candidate genes, such as Orphans, GNAT, bZIP, MYB, AP2-EREBP, NAC and WRKY genes, were predicted to determine tolerance to low-P stress. Second, four pathways (starch and sucrose metabolism; plant hormone signal transduction; phenylpropanoid biosynthesis; and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism) were correlated with low-P stress and were highly differentially regulated in two time treatments. These results provide new insights into the complex mechanisms of the low-P response in S. davidii or even other plant species.

The combination of yttria-zirconia (3Y–ZrO2) and stereolithography (SLA) is essential for forming alternative bioceramics for complex, custom-designed dental implants. In addition, suitable bioceramic suspensions are preconditions for such fabrication using SLA technology. In this study, 3Y–ZrO2 and 3Y–ZrO2/graphene oxide (GO) powders dispersed in ultraviolet curable acrylic-based resins are developed. A sedimentation experiment is performed to evaluate various ratios of monomers and dispersants to ensure good stability and dispersion of the suspensions. The hydrophobic structures of KH560 are introduced on the surfaces of ceramic powders, representing better wettability performances with 40 vol% NPG2PODA and 60 vol% Di-TMPTA. Moreover, the effects of premixed solvents and solid contents on the rheological behaviors of suspensions are investigated to confirm shear thinning and pseudo plasticity, with the experimental results fitting the Krieger–Dougherty curves. Further, the cure depth and width of the ceramic suspensions are studied, the results of which show that the penetration depth and critical exposure of the 3Y–ZrO2 (3Y–ZrO2/GO) pastes are 17.2 ± 0.50 μm and 4.80 ± 0.62 mJ/cm2 (11.8 ± 1.20 μm and 22.80 ± 9.34 mJ/cm2), respectively. The addition of GO results in a sharp increase in critical exposure, which intensifies the light scattering and hinders the curing of the ceramic paste. The research is expected to serve as a technical guide for the fabrication of ceramic suspensions for dental implants using SLA technology.

At present, there are two ways to obtain temperature information: contact type and nonintrusive type. As a nonintrusive temperature measurement method, ultrasonic thermometry can be used to acquire the temperature distribution of complex fields conveniently. By measuring the time-of-flight (TOF) between ultrasonic transmitters and receivers, and according to the relationship between temperature and ultrasonic velocity, the temperature distribution can be reconstructed. Among the existing algorithms, the least square method (LSM) will lose much information near the edges of the temperature field, and the algebra reconstruction technique (ART) is time-consuming with low reconstruction accuracy. In this article, an improved reconstruction algorithm based on an inverse quadratic function and singular value decomposition (IQ-SVD) is proposed, which can effectively increase the reconstruction accuracy. The simulations of the real temperature data are conducted in ideal and noisy environments, respectively. Moreover, the influence of region division and shape parameters on reconstruction accuracy is discussed. The simulation results indicate that, compared with conventional algorithms, the proposed algorithm can accurately reflect the temperature distribution, and the root mean square error in the central region and the edge region is reduced by 0.49% at least, and 1.28% at most.

The aphid parasitoid, Aphelinus maculatus Yasnosh (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), first described as a new record in China in 2016, is one of the most important natural enemies of the Chinese wolf-berry aphids. In order to relate its larval development stages to morphological changes of both the parasitoid and its host aphid during the parasitoid development, and to explore the larval taxonomic significance, a laboratory dissection study was conducted under the light microscope. There are three larval instars during immature development of A. maculatus. Instars differ in body shape, mandibles and numbers of respiratory spiracles. The first instar larva of A. maculatus is elongate in shape, the second instar larva is thick spindle-shaped to spindle-shaped, and the third instar larva is spherical-shaped with a small tail. Mandibles of the first and second instar larvae of A. maculatus are almost invisible, and their pharynxes are well developed. Mandibles of the third instar larva are well developed and are made of a pair of dark yellow sharp pointed spines each projecting from a transparent broad triangular base. The third instar larva possesses seven pairs of respiratory spiracles with one pair on the mesothorax and other six pairs successively on the second to seventh abdominal segments. As the larval development proceeds, a brown patch (the midgut of parasitoid larva) in the center of host aphid abdomen becomes larger in size and darker in color. The host aphid turns entirely black as a mummy and dies at the prepupal stage of the parasitoid, pine-nut shaped meconium is excreted at this time. The life cycle of A. maculatus from eggs to adults lasts 11.5–14 days at the temperature of 26 ± 1 °C. Morphological features of mandibles, respiratory spiracles and meconium are useful in the larval taxonomy of aphelinids.

Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai is a dual-purpose Chinese herbal medicine and functional food favored by minorities in Southwest China, and its fruits are used for the treatment of dyspepsia, dysentery, enteritis, and rheumatism inflammation. Some diseases may be related to microbial infection; however, it is not known how the fruits possess antimicrobial activity. We evaluated the antimicrobial bioctivity of different evaluation extracts of C. speciosa fruits by in vitro and in vivo with colony-forming unit assays, and the strongest bioactive-guided fraction was selected for column chromatography (CC), UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, and NMR spectroscopy to confirm the chemical constituents. The most possible antimicrobial mechanism of C. speciosa fruits was explored by metabolomics approach, fluorescence microscopy imaging, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thirty compounds, which were major characteristic ions of the bioactive fraction, were determined precisely. The bioactive fraction could inhibit 18 pathogenic microorganisms, significantly reduced, especially drug-resistant bacteria, compared to ampicillin sodium salt, fluconazole, and berberine chloride form; and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) or minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values were in the range of 0.1-1 mg/mL. The compounds 2'-methoxyaucuparin (1) and oleanolic acid (20) not only have antibacterial activity but also may have synergistic effects. Further, the bioactive fraction might inhibit the biofilm formation, enhance immunity, and restore bacterial infection damage in vitro and in vivo to kill microorganisms. The data indicated that C. speciosa fruits' major bioactive fraction enriched with triterpenes, flavonoids, and phenolics could be developed as a functional supplement for individuals to prevent and treat microbial infection.

A series of triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives with various substituent groups were prepared and showed different absorption and fluorescence characteristics due to the substituent effect. On account of the existence of pyridine units, these TPA derivatives exhibited acid-induced tunable multicolor fluorescence emission including white light emission. In addition, acid-induced fluorescence regulation of these compounds has been also realized in the solid state, which enable them to be successfully constructed the stimuli-responsive fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing.

Context Capsule of alkaloids from the leaf of Alstonia scholaris (L.) R.Br. (Apocynaceae) (CALAS) is a new investigational botanical drug (No. 2011L01436) for bronchitis, post-infectious cough and asthma. Objective To observe the clinical safety and tolerability of CALAS. Materials and methods Subjects were assigned to eight cohorts, and each received randomly CALAS or placebo in one of single ascending dose (SAD) of 8, 40, 120, 240, 360, 480, or in one of multiple ascending dose (MAD) of 40 or 120 mg, three times daily for 7 days. Each cohort contained two placebo subjects. Results Sixty-two enrolled volunteers completed the study and no serious adverse events and clinically significant changes in vital signs, electrocardiography, and upper abdominal Doppler ultrasonography were observed. The ratios of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were reported in 11/46 (23.91%) of CALAS groups and 3/16 (18.75%) of the placebo group (p > 0.05), respectively, based on the results of SAD and MAD. All TEAEs were mild, transient, and disappeared without any intervention. The TEAEs possibly related to CALAS treatment were as followings: hiccups (4/46: 8%), dry mouth and nausea (3/46: 6%), increased sleep (2/46: 4%), abdominal distension (1/46: 2%), bilirubin elevated (1/46: 2%). Discussion and conclusions CALAS is safe and well-tolerated with no unexpected or clinically relevant safety concerns up to a single dose of 360 mg and three times daily for 7 days up to 120 mg in healthy Chinese volunteers, supporting further Phase II studies.

The reaction conditions and scope of the excited-state Nazarov reaction of dicyclicvinyl ketones were studied. The stereochemistry of this electrocyclization is consistent with the mechanism of the pericyclic reaction and Woodward-Hoffmann rule. UV-light-promoted excited-state Nazarov reactions gave hydrofluorenones bearing a syn-cis configuration via a disrotatory cyclization. The core tricyclic hydrofluorenones of pyrrocidines and wortmannines were constructed via the excited-state Nazarov reactions, which demonstrated their synthetic potential in complex natural product total synthesis.

Aggregation of antibodies, especially multimers, is a problem that puzzles scientific and industrial fields, and it is more serious in high concentration antibodies. We found that the high concentration antibody solution with rich multimers has a deeper color, which was confirmed by SEC–HPLC, DLS, and SEC–DLS methods. After that, the reasons for formation of multimers were analyzed. LC–MS was used for complete molecular weight analysis, which showed that the multimer sample could not be ionized, indicating a complex structure of multimers. ICP–MS was carried out to analyze the elements in the multimers, and revealed an important message that iron ion in the multimers was significantly higher. On further analysis of the interaction between iron ions and antibody molecules, the results showed that iron ions (Fe(III)) and antibody monomers irreversibly formed multimers under acidic conditions. This study provided useful insights for optimizing the development of antibody drug substances.

Nowadays, more fashion companies have started to adopt various sustainability practices and communicate these practices through their annual public CSR reports. In this study, we aim to provide a holistic perspective of fashion companies’ sustainable development and investigate the sustainability practices of global fashion companies. A total of 181 CSR reports from 29 fashion companies were collected. A Dictionary approach text classification method, combined with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a computer-assisted topic modeling algorithm, was implemented to detect and summarize the themes and keywords of detailed practices disclosed in CSR reports. The findings identified 12 main sustainability practices themes based on the triple bottom line theory and the moral responsibility of corporate sustainability theory. In general, waste management and human rights are the most frequently mentioned themes. The findings also suggest that global fashion companies adopted different sustainability strategies based on their product categories and competitive advantages.

Dental implants are in direct contact with living tissue, therefore, biological performance as well as mechanical properties and tribological behavior of implant materials are important and must be systematically investigated. In our study, 3Y–ZrO2 was modified with different concentrations of bioactive, biocompatible graphene oxide (GO). The 3Y–ZrO2/GO composites were fabricated by hot-press sintering. Compared to raw 3Y–ZrO2, addition of GO sharply increased bending strength and fracture toughness, representing an increase of 200% and 41%, respectively. Crack deflection, crack bridging, and GO pull-out were main toughening mechanisms, associated with the formation of a C–O–Zr bond. The addition of GO reduced coefficient of friction and wear rate and lowered surface roughness of 3Y–ZrO2, mainly owing to self-lubricating properties of the composites. In addition, thin film of hydroxyl groups (OH-) on the surface of composites improved wetting properties, as indicated by low contact angle. GO did not cause any obvious signs of cytotoxicity and promoted proliferation, growth, and adhesion of cells. Fully elongated cell morphology was observed on composites. Overall, 3Y–ZrO2/GO composite ceramic with 0.15 wt% GO is promising biomaterial for dental implant applications.

The coordinated utilization of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is vital for plants to maintain nutrient balance and achieve optimal growth. Previously, we revealed a mechanism by which nitrate induces genes for phosphate utilization; this mechanism depends on NRT1.1B-facilitated degradation of cytoplasmic SPX4, which in turn promotes cytoplasmic-nuclear shuttling of PHR2, the central transcription factor of phosphate signaling, and triggers the nitrate-induced phosphate response (NIPR) and N-P coordinated utilization in rice. In this study, we unveiled a fine-tuning mechanism of NIPR in the nucleus regulated by Highly Induced by Nitrate Gene 1 (HINGE1, also known as RLI1), a MYB-transcription factor closely related to PHR2. RLI1/HINGE1, which is transcriptionally activated by PHR2 under nitrate induction, can directly activate the expression of phosphate starvation-induced genes. More importantly, RLI1/HINGE1 competes with PHR2 for binding to its repressor proteins in the nucleus (SPX proteins), and consequently releases PHR2 to further enhance phosphate response. Therefore, RLI1/HINGE1 amplifies the phosphate response in the nucleus downstream of the cytoplasmic SPX4-PHR2 cascade, thereby enabling fine-tuning of N-P balance when nitrate supply is sufficient.

Hydrogel-based wearable devices have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in electronic skins, soft robotics, and sensors. However, it is still a challenge for hydrogel-based wearable devices to be integrated with high conductivity, a self-healing ability, remoldability, self-adhesiveness, good mechanical strength and high stretchability, good biocompatibility, and stimulus-responsiveness. Herein, multifunctional conductive composite hydrogels were fabricated by a simple one-pot method based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and tannic acid (TA) using borax as a cross-linker. The composite hydrogel network was built by borate ester bonds and hydrogen bonds. The obtained hydrogel exhibited pH- and sugar-responsiveness, high stretchability (780% strain), and fast self-healing performance with healing efficiency (HE) as high as 93.56% without any external stimulus. Additionally, the hydrogel displayed considerable conductive behavior and stable changes of resistance with high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 15.98 at a strain of 780%). The hydrogel was further applied as a strain sensor for monitoring large and tiny human motions with durable stability. Significantly, the healed hydrogel also showed good sensing behavior. This work broadens the avenue for the design and preparation of biocompatible polymer-based hydrogels to promote the application of hydrogel sensors with comfortable wearing feel and high sensitivity.

The design and synthesis of low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting are critical and challenging. Hereby, a bimetallic phosphide embedded in a N and P co-doped porous carbon (FeCoP2@NPPC) material was synthesized by using sustainable biomass-derived N- and P-containing carbohydrates and non-noble metal salts as precursors. The obtained material exhibits good catalytic activities in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting. The bimetallic alloy phosphide (FeCoP2) is the active site for electrocatalysis. Theoretical calculation indicates that the sub-layer Fe atoms and top-layer Co atoms in FeCoP2 exhibit a synergistic effect for enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The carbon matrix around the FeCoP2 can prevent the corrosion during the catalytic reactions. The hierarchically porous structure of the FeCoP2@NPPC material can promote the transfer of electrons and electrolyte, and increase the contact area of the active sites and electrolytes. N- and P-containing functionalities improve the wetting and conductivity properties of the porous carbon. Due to the synergistic effects, FeCoP2@NPPC requires a low overpotential of 114 and 150 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 for HER in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, and an overpotential of 236 mV for OER in 1.0 M KOH solution, which are much lower than those of FeP@NPPC and CoP@NPPC. Based on the density functional theory calculation, FeCoP2 yields the smallest Gibbs free energy change of rate-determining step among the samples, which leads to better electrochemical performances. In addition, when FeCoP2@NPPC was used as a bifunctional catalyst in water splitting, the electrolyzer needed a low voltage of 1.60 V to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, this work provides a strategy for preparing sustainable, stable, and highly active electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Excess N deposition has aroused concerns about its negative impacts on forest ecosystems. A two-year study was conducted to assess the responses of stomatal conductance (Gc) and carbon assimilation (Anet) of dominant tree species (Liquidambar formosana, Quercus acutissima and Quercus variabilis) to increased N deposition at a canopy and understory N additions experimental platform in a temperate deciduous broadleaved forest. Five treatments included N addition of 25 and 50 kg ha−1 y−1 onto either the canopy (C25 and C50) or the understory (U25 and U50), and a control treatment (CK, without N addition). Our results showed that neither canopy nor understory N addition had an impact on carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), the light saturated rate of electron transport (Jmax) and leaf-level net assimilation (AnL) of the studied tree species. Higher concentrations of N addition (U50 and C50 treatments) exerted negative impacts on Gc and Anet of L. formosana and Quercus acutissima under lower precipitation conditions, while lower concentrations of N addition (U25 and C25 treatments) had minimal impacts on overall ecophysiological function. The U50 treatment increased tree water use efficiency (WUE) of L. formosana in the second experimental year. Canopy and understory N addition generated differential effects on forest vegetation. The traditional approach with understory addition could not fully reflect the effects of increased N deposition on the canopy-associated assimilation processes.

Organic and nitrogen pollutants in mine water could be removed effectively during the storage and transport of water in a coal mine underground reservoir packed with coal gangue through various water-rock interactions. However, little is known about the effect of the released dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from the packed matrix on their removal. Column experiments were performed at a Darcy flux of 1.56 cm·h-1 at 25 °C to investigate the characteristics of DOM derived from Jurassic and Permian coal gangue individually packed in underground reservoirs of Bulianta (BL1) and Baode (BD2) coal mines. Chemical characteristics of the DOM were analyzed by using the ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Results showed that the values of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and electricity (EC) in the outlet of column packed with BL1 were obviously higher than those from BD2 due to the higher permeability of BL1 with more complex mineralogical and chemical compositions. The parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) indicated that the fluorescence components in the DOM derived from BL1 and BD2 were individually dominated by the humic-like and tryptophan-like substances. Thus, the higher aromaticity, hydrophobicity, and humification indicated by the specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254) and 260 nm (SUVA260) and humification index (HIX) were observed in the DOM from the younger Jurassic BL1, implying that the DOM may contain more plant-derived precursors. Meanwhile, the higher values of fluorescence index (FI) and biological/autochthonous index (BIX) confirmed the stronger autochthonous characterization of DOM originated from the earlier Permian BD2. The observed characterization of DOM will further extend the understanding of purification mechanism of mine water during its storage and transport in coal mine underground reservoirs packed with coal gangue of different geologic ages.

This investigation was aimed at determining the concentration levels of five toxic heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and mercury) in dried Porphyra and Laminaria samples from coastal city of China. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for determination of lead, cadmium and total arsenic. Atomic fluorescence spectrometry was used for mercury, and liquid chromatography coupled with ICP-MS was used for arsenic speciation. The mean concentrations of lead, cadmium, chromium, total arsenic, and mercury were 0.96 ± 0.03 mg/kg, 2.62 ± 0.07 mg/kg, 1.64 ± 0.08 mg/kg, 36.67 ± 0.53 mg/kg, and 7.56 ± 0.42 μg/kg for Porphyra samples and 0.61 ± 0.03 mg/kg, 0.48 ± 0.02 mg/kg, 3.78 ± 0.56 mg/kg, 43.85 ± 1.42 mg/kg, and 46.61 ± 2.02 μg/kg for Laminaria samples. The results were comparable with previous similar research. The potential health risk assessment was conducted by comparing the calculated weekly intakes of toxic metals from Porphyra and Laminaria with provisional tolerable weekly intake. Consumption of these seaweeds does not seem to pose a risk for the consumers' health regarding their content of heavy metals. However, the potential health risk of cadmium should not be overlooked for consumers with high intake of Porphyra.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effect of ambient temperature on hospitalization due to acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI) in Shenyang, China. We used the distributed delayed nonlinear model to evaluate the impact of ambient temperature on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The study population was divided into four groups: < 65 group and ≥ 65 age groups, female and male groups. The < 65 age group of AECOPD patients was more likely to be affected by high ambient temperature, while the ≥ 65 age group of AECOPD patients was more sensitive to low ambient temperature. The hospitalization risk of MI admission increased in the ≥ 65 age group at 1–8 days delay under low ambient temperature conditions. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on conventional P25 photoanode films have poor photovoltaic performance due to their inability to utilize the infrared light, which accounts for 43% of the solar spectrum. To overcome this defect, we prepared the upconversion luminescent material NaYbF4: Ho3+ by the solvent thermal method and incorporated it into the photoanode of DSSCs. The upconversion luminescent material NaYbF4: Ho3+ is a composite multifunctional material that can absorb infrared light and emit different bands of visible light. The composite film formed by doping NaYbF4: Ho3+ in the photoanode film can indirectly utilize infrared light to broaden the spectral absorption range and improve the absorption of photons. The effect of different incorporation ratios of fluorescent materials on cell performance was studied. Optimal performance devices based on optimized ratios of UCNPs achieve a high-power conversion efficiency of 7.52%, an improvement of 28.8% compared to conventional P25 nanoparticle-based DSSCs (5.84%). The improved performance of NaYbF4: Ho3+-based DSSCs could be attributed to the upconversion luminescence effect, high light-trapping efficiency, low charge transfer resistance, and long electron lifetime. This work provides a new possible way to extend the spectral response range of DSSCs and to prepare high-performance solar cells.

Occurrence and flow of hydrocarbons in nanopores are two important issues in the effective exploitation of shale oil reservoirs. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the mechanisms about occurrence and flow of octane in slit-shaped quartz nanopores. We show that the occurrence state of octane and, therefore, its flow behavior are profoundly affected by the potential field from quartz walls and adsorption layers if the nanopore width w becomes less than 50 Å. Two main adsorption layers are always formed, adjacent to the walls and independent of w, due to two potential wells generated by the attractive potentials of the walls. Each pair of symmetrical adsorption layers, each of which can be considered as a solid-like surface, forms a confined environment similar to a nano-slit. The attractive potentials from them are found to be the cause for the formation of the adsorption layers between them. The obvious bulk phase of octane is formed in the pore of w = 50 Å due to the wide zero potential barrier induced by the innermost two adsorption layers. The nonlinear dependence of flow rate on pressure gradient shows that Darcy's law fails to describe the flow in the nanopore. The non-Darcy behavior mainly arises from adsorption effects from the walls and the adsorption layers, slippage between octane and walls and between adjacent two adsorption layers, and the molecular exchange between adsorption layers. A modified microscopic model is established to predict the dependence of flow rate on potential field, pressure gradient and w, which is in a good agreement with our simulation results and verified by the dodecane flow through the nanopore. Our work can be of great importance for revealing the mechanisms of occurrence and transport and guiding the estimation and exploitation of shale oil resources.

Zirconia ceramics and carbon-based materials are widely adopted in medical and dental applications due to their excellent biocompatibility and aesthetics. However, fracture toughness of ceramic materials limits their application in clinical dentistry because of the existence of residual stress. In this study, zirconia/graphene oxide (ZrO2-GO) composite ceramics were fabricated by hot-press sintering. Residual stresses developed on the surface of ZrO2-GO composite ceramics were evaluated by X-ray residual stress analysis and indentation techniques. The variation of surface residual stress with GO content was evaluated, and found to be consistent with that of fracture toughness. The generation of residual stress was found to be directly related to fracture toughness. Residual stress calculated by theoretical formula of indentation method was consistent with that measured by X-ray diffraction in line with the content of GO. Based on above results, it is concluded that 0.1–0.15 wt% GO composite ceramics possessed better mechanical properties.

A series of fully conjugated macrocycles Mn (n = 4–7) consisting of N-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenyl) substituted carbazole (Cz-Ar) were successfully synthesized. The aryl carbazole and macrocycle M4 can be readily oxidized and the corresponding radical cation species were found to be highly stable. Moreover, macrocycle M5 was found to form 1 : 1 stoichiometric complexes with fullerenes C60 and C70 with association constants as high as (8.38 ± 0.33) × 104 M−1 and (7.64 ± 0.26) × 104 M−1, respectively.

The design and fabrication of highly efficient artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) are of great importance in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Benefitting from the convenient construction process of supramolecular self-assembly, herein, a dual-donor artificial LHS was efficiently constructed through hierarchical self-assembly approaches involving metal–ligand coordination interactions, host–guest interactions and hydrophobic interactions. Notably, compared to the model single-donor artificial LHS with only one donor chromophore, the prepared dual-donor artificial LHS exhibited higher energy transfer efficiency and antenna effects. This research provides an efficient strategy for the construction of artificial LHSs with high energy transfer efficiency and antenna effects.

Chiral assemblies by combining natural biomolecules with plasmonic nanostructures hold great promise for plasmonic enhanced sensing, imaging, and catalytic applications. Herein, we demonstrate that human serum albumin (HSA) and porcine serum albumin (PSA) can guide the chiral assembly of gold nanorods (GNRs) with left-handed chiroptical responses opposite to those by a series of other homologous animal serum albumins (SAs) due to the difference of their surface charge distributions. Under physiological pH conditions, the assembly of HSA or PSA with GNRs yielded left-handed twisted aggregates, while bovine serum albumin (BSA), sheep serum albumin, and equine serum albumin behaved on the contrary. The driving force for the chiral assembly is mainly attributed to electrostatic interaction. The opposite chiroptical signals acquired are correlated with the chiral surface charge distributions of the tertiary structures of SAs. Moreover, the chirality of the assembly induced by both HSA and BSA can be enhanced or reversed by adjusting the pH values. This work provides new insights into the modulation of protein-induced chiral assemblies and promotes their applications.

Health and wellbeing are significantly impaired by alcoholic liver disease (ALD), and although some lactic acid bacteria strains have been shown previously to relieve ALD symptoms, the mechanisms behind these effects are still unclear. Here, the Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet containing alcohol was fed to C57BL/6J mice for 6 weeks to build a chronic alcoholic liver lesion model to study the protective effects and possible mechanisms of Lactobacillus mixture (Lactobacillus plantarum KLDS1.0344 and Lactobacillus acidophilus KLDS1.0901). The results showed that Lactobacillus mixture improved intestinal epithelial permeability and reduced the serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels. Furthermore, Lactobacillus mixture inhibited liver lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation by regulating AMPK, Nrf-2, and TLR4/NF-κB pathways. Importantly, the Lactobacillus mixture modulated the gut microbiota, resulting in increased short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producers and decreased Gram-negative bacteria. Taken together, these findings indicated that the Lactobacillus mixture could positively regulate the gut microbiota, causing increased levels of SCFAs, which inhibited alcohol-induced liver lipid accumulation and oxidative stress through the gut-liver axis. Moreover, following administration of the Lactobacillus mixture, the improvement of intestinal epithelial permeability and the reduction of Gram-negative bacteria led to the decrease of LPS entering the portal vein, thereby inhibiting alcohol-induced liver inflammation.

In Caenorhabditis elegans, SHN-1 is the homologue of SHANK, a scaffolding protein. In this study, we determined the molecular basis for SHN-1/SHANK in the regulation of innate immune response to fungal infection. Mutation of shn-1 increased the susceptibility to Candida albicans infection and suppressed the innate immune response. After C. albicans infection for 6, 12, or 24 h, both transcriptional expression of shn-1 and SHN-1::GFP expression were increased, implying that the activated SHN-1 may mediate a protection mechanism for C. elegans against the adverse effects from fungal infection. SHN-1 acted in both the neurons and the intestine to regulate the innate immune response to fungal infection. In the neurons, GLR-1, an AMPA ionotropic glutamate receptor, was identified as the downstream target in the regulation of innate immune response to fungal infection. GLR-1 further positively affected the function of SER-7-mediated serotonin signaling and antagonized the function of DAT-1-mediated dopamine signaling in the regulation of innate immune response to fungal infection. Our study suggests the novel function of SHN-1/SHANK in the regulation of innate immune response to fungal infection. Moreover, our results also denote the crucial role of neurotransmitter signals in mediating the function of SHN-1/SHANK in regulating innate immune response to fungal infection.

A candidate gene, designate PpRPH, in the D locus was identified to control fruit acidity in peach. Fruit acidity has a strong impact on organoleptic quality of fruit. Peach fruit acidity is controlled by a large-effect D locus on chromosome 5. In this study, the D locus was mapped to a 509-kb interval, with two markers, 5dC720 and 5C1019, co-segregating with the non-acid/acid trait of peach fruit. Within this interval, a candidate gene encoding a putative small protein, designated PpRPH, showed a consistency between gene expression and fruit acidity, with up- and down-regulation in non-acidic and acidic fruits, respectively. Transient ectopic expression of PpRPH in tobacco leaves caused an increase of pH by approximately 40% compared to the control transformed with empty vector. Whereas, the concentrations of citrate and malate decreased significantly by 22% and 37%, respectively, with respect to the empty vector control. All these results suggest that PpRPH is a strong candidate gene of the D locus. These findings contribute to our overall understanding of the complex mechanism underlying fruit acidity in peach as well as that in other fruit crops.

Mammalian carboxylesterases (CES) are key enzymes that participate in the hydrolytic metabolism of various endogenous and exogenous substrates. Human carboxylesterase 2A (hCES2A), mainly distributed in the small intestine and colon, plays a significant role in the hydrolysis of many drugs. In this study, 3-arylisoquinolones 3 h [3-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl)-7,8-dimethoxyisoquinolin-1(2H)-one] and 4 a [3-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-bromo-7,8-dimethoxyisoquinolin-1(2H)-one] were found to have potent inhibitory effects on hCES2A (IC50 =0.68 μΜ, Ki =0.36 μΜ) and excellent specificity (more than 147.05-fold over hCES1 A). Moreover, 4 a exhibited threefold improved inhibition on intracellular hCES2A in living HepG2 cells relative to 3 h, with an IC50 value of 0.41 μΜ. Results of inhibition kinetics studies and molecular docking simulations demonstrate that both 3 h and 4 a can bind to multiple sites on hCES2A, functioning as mixed inhibitors. Structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that the lactam moiety on the B ring is crucial for specificity towards hCES2A, while a benzyloxy group is optimal for hCES2A inhibitory potency; the introduction of a bromine atom may enhance cell permeability, thereby increasing the intracellular hCES2A inhibitory activity.

The h -good neighbor connectivity κ h ( G ) is an important parameter to evaluate the fault tolerance of an interconnection network G . So far, almost all known results of κ h ( G ) are about small h ′ s except the hypercubes, the star graphs, the k -ary n -cubes and hierarchical hypercube network H H C n et al. In this paper, we focus on κ h ( B n , k ) for the ( n , k ) -bubble-sort network B n , k , which is a generalization of the bubble-sort graph B n as it is a special case of ( n , k ) -bubble-sort networks for k = n − 1 . We show that κ h ( B n , k ) = n + h ( k − 2 ) − 1 for 2 ≤ k ≤ ⌈ n + 3 2 ⌉ and 0 ≤ h ≤ ⌊ n − 3 2 ⌋ , which implies that at least n + h ( k − 2 ) − 1 vertices of B n , k have to be deleted to get a disconnected graph without vertices of degree less than h .

Seismic anisotropy beneath Anatolia is complex, with several layers of different anisotropy. The average anisotropy is well constrained by shear-wave splitting measurements [Kaviani et al., 2009], suggesting very strong anisotropy (over 1.5s delay time). However, the vertical layering of anisotropy and the contribution of each layer is still an open question. We construct anisotropic phase-velocity maps of fundamental-mode Rayleigh waves for the Anatolia region using records from several regional seismic stations, using both earthquake and ambient noise data. The collision between the Arabia and Eurasia plates leads to the westward extrusion (and EW anisotropy) of the Anatolian crust, consistent with the seismic anisotropy patterns we found in the crust (1%, EW fast axis) and with previous studies [Mutlu et al., 2011; Legendre et al., 2020].The Aegean/Anatolian subduction system with slab tearing and breakoff induces a complex flow pattern and anisotropy in the upper mantle [van Hinsbergen et al., 2010; Kaviani et al., 2018].This is in agreement with the anisotropy we image in the lithosphere (1%, N020E and N100E fast axes) and asthenosphere (1%, N120E). However, the anisotropy in these layers display limited amplitudes.At deeper depth, remnant Bitlis and Tethyan slabs are lying flat above the 660-km discontinuity [Berk Biryol et al., 2011]. The uniform pattern of anisotropy from shear-wave splitting observations can not be explained solely by a single anisotropic layer, and is not consistent with the anisotropy observed in the crustl lithospheric and asthenospheric mantle. This suggests that main contribution of the anisotropy likely originates from a deep source around the mantle transition zone [Legendre et al., 2021].

Redox-responsive ferrocene (Fc)-containing hydrogels have attracted increasing interest for their potential applications in materials science, biomedicine and catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel polynorbornene-based tetrablock terpolymer containing consecutively aldehyde, Fc, and dentritic triethylene glycol and aldehyde groups in the side chain by the ring-opening metathesis polymerization with the aid of the 3rd generation Grubbs catalyst. Owing to the presence of Fc and triazole groups, this copolymer could be used as both reducing and stabilizing agents for the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Also, this copolymer could be used as a crosslinking agent to fabricate gelatin hydrogels based on the Schiff's base reaction between the aldehyde groups and the side-chain amino groups of gelatin. Based on the above properties, the AgNPs composites of gelatin hydrogels were further successfully fabricated by blending this copolymer, gelatin and AgNO3 together or soaking this Fc-containing gelatin hydrogels into the AgNO3 solution, in which the AgI was in situ reduced into Ag0 by the Fc groups. Results of inhibition zone experiments confirmed the antibacterial activities of the obtained composites against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcal aureus.
