Intense eruptions of the Tonga volcano activated prominent traveling atmospheric disturbances (TADs) at 04:05UT on 15 January 2022. Himawari‐8 satellite images depict that TADs of the tropospheric Lamb wavefront propagate with a speed of 315 m/s and arrive in Taiwan at 11:30UT. Networks of 98 barometers, 28 tide gauges, an ionosonde, and 10 magnetometers are used to study the responses of magnetic fields to TADs in Taiwan. The horizontal components in magnetic field changes of the Taiwan magnetometers all point toward and away from the Tonga volcano at 11:00–12:00UT upon the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arrival and at 22:00–23:00UT when the thermospheric Lamb wavefront with speeds of 487 m/s coming, respectively. Analyses of the raytracing and beamforming techniques on the horizontal components in magnetic field changes of 69 INTERMAGNET magnetometers show that both tropospheric and thermospheric Lamb waves efficiently activate traveling ionospheric disturbances and modify ionospheric currents of the globe. Plain Language Summary: At 04:05UT on 15 January 2022, intense Tonga volcanic eruptions induce prominent atmospheric disturbances and tsunami waves. Himawari‐8 meteorological satellite images depict the induced upper‐level tropospheric disturbances with horizontal speeds of about 315 m/s at 8.2 km altitude in the Lamb wave mode travel worldwide. Upon the traveling atmospheric disturbances (TADs) of the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arriving in Taiwan at 11:30UT, 98 ground‐based barometers register increases and reach peaks at about 11:50UT in the atmospheric pressure; 28 tide gauges record enhancements and maximums of sea level fluctuations at about 14:30–17:30UT; and a local ionosonde observes that the ionosphere reaches the highest altitude at 14:30UT. The changes of the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic fields measured by 10 Taiwan magnetometers almost all point exactly toward the Tonga volcano upon the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arrival at 11:00–12:00UT, and away from the volcano at 22:00–23:00UT, which suggests a 487 m/s TAD (or thermospheric Lamb wavefront) at about 130 km altitude also being activated. The horizontal components in magnetic field changes of 69 INTERMAGNET magnetometers show that both tropospheric and thermospheric Lamb waves triggered by Tonga volcanic eruptions are very powerful, and can induce intense dynamo currents and electric fields on the globe. At 12:15 on January 15, 2022 (Beijing time), a massive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano produced violent atmospheric fluctuations, which in turn generated a global tsunami through an abrupt air pressure shock upon the sea surface. Two main components of tsunami waves, phase-locked waves and free gravity waves, were identified by significant differences in propagating speeds across the deep ocean. The phase-locked wave propagated through the ocean basin synchronously with the atmospheric Lamb wave at an average speed of approximately 306 m/s, followed by the free gravity wave at a slower speed. The locked wave reached the coast of eastern Taiwan Island at about 20:00 on January 15, in coincidence with the Lamb wave arrival. However, on the coast of Chinese mainland, tidal gauges did not record tsunami signals until at least 2 h after the Lamb wave arrivals. Theoretical analyses and numerical experiments both suggested that as a result of the incoming wave shoaling above the vast continental shelf of Chinese mainland, the locked wave was no longer trapped by the air pressure shock and gradually transformed into freely-propagating shallow water waves by slowing down its propagation. Due to the long-lasting planetary atmospheric fluctuations circling the earth many times, the sea level oscillations continuously propagated onto the Chinese shelf, which resulted in the tsunami waves excited along the Chinese coasts for at least 36 h. The maximum wave amplitude recorded on the coast of eastern Taiwan Island was 44 cm at Wushi, while on the coasts of eastern and southern Chinese mainland, the maximum amplitudes were 22 cm at Shipu and 13 cm at Zhuhai. Fourier and wavelet analyses were performed to identify the major components of the tsunami waves on the Chinese coasts. The results indicated that eastern Taiwan Island was impacted mainly by the waves with periods of approximately 10–40 min. Chinese mainland was hit by the evolved shallow water waves and subsequent free waves, with periods of approximately 40–100 and 16–20 min, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An analytically based method is proposed to simulate the acoustic-gravity waves in the horizontally stratified atmosphere-Earth structure generated by a point force on the Earth's surface. The method solves the linear momentum, continuity and adiabaticity equations in the atmosphere and elastodynamic equations in the solid Earth in the frequency–wavenumber domain. The time-domain waveforms are obtained by wavenumber integration and fast Fourier transform with respect to the frequency. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the properties of the acoustic-gravity waves, including both the high-frequency acoustic-mode waves and low-frequency gravity-mode waves. Simulations of the high-frequency responses show that disturbances in the atmosphere with three apparent horizontal velocities can be identified. They are, namely, the direct acoustic-mode wave generated by source travelling with the sound speed, the head wave generated by the seismic P -wave travelling with apparent horizontal speed identical to the P velocity, and the head wave generated by the Rayleigh wave with a horizontal speed same to the Rayleigh wave velocity. Simulations of the low-frequency responses show that the gravity-mode wave and Lamb wave can be identified. The gravity-mode wave travels with a speed lower than the sound seed and does not reach everywhere, especially the area directly above the source. The Lamb wave travels along the Earth surface with a speed of about 310 m s–1 and its energy decays with the altitude. We also apply our method to explaining the Doppler sounding data observed in Taiwan area during the 2011 Tohoku M 9 earthquake, and find good agreement between the predicted signals and observed data in the arrival time and wave envelope associated with the Rayleigh wave.
