Arctic sea ice change is one of the critical factors affecting the global climate environment; hence, it is crucial to obtain sea ice thickness with high accuracy while studying polar and global climate change. In the process of using altimetry data to estimate sea ice thickness, the mean sea surface height will bring greater uncertainty to the extraction of sea ice freeboard, which will affect the accuracy of sea ice thickness. Also, the influence of snow cover on radar signal penetration will bring greater uncertainty to sea ice thickness. In this paper, we present a processing chain for sea ice thickness estimation. First, we compare the effect of four different MSS models on the freeboard estimation. Then, considering the incomplete penetration of radar signals and the different speeds of radar signals penetrating the snow layer and the vacuum, the traditional sea ice thickness model is optimized to obtain the sea ice thickness. Compared with the Operation IceBridge (OIB) sea ice thickness, the accuracy of sea ice thickness obtained by the optimized model is better than 0.350 m, with a root mean square error of 0.260 m and a mean bias of 0.048 m. The comparison results show that the combination of the latest DTU18 MSS model and sea ice thickness optimization model effectively improve the accuracy of sea ice thickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate the performance of the eXtensible Bremen Aerosol/cloud and surfacE parameters Retrieval (XBAER) algorithm, presented in the Part 1 companion paper to this paper, we apply the XBAER algorithm to the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) instrument on board Sentinel-3. Snow properties – snow grain size (SGS), snow particle shape (SPS) and specific surface area (SSA) – are derived under cloud-free conditions. XBAER-derived snow properties are compared to other existing satellite products and validated by ground-based and aircraft measurements. The atmospheric correction is performed on SLSTR for cloud-free scenarios using Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and the aerosol typing strategy according to the standard XBAER algorithm. The optimal SGS and SPS are estimated iteratively utilizing a look-up-table (LUT) approach, minimizing the difference between SLSTR-observed and SCIATRAN-simulated surface directional reflectances at 0.55 and 1.6 µm. The SSA is derived for a retrieved SGS and SPS pair. XBAER-derived SGS, SPS and SSA have been validated using in situ measurements from the recent campaign SnowEx17 during February 2017. The comparison shows a relative difference between the XBAER-derived SGS and SnowEx17-measured SGS of less than 4 %. The difference between the XBAER-derived SSA and SnowEx17-measured SSA is 2.7 m 2 /kg. XBAER-derived SPS can be reasonably explained by the SnowEx17-observed snow particle shapes. Intensive validation shows that (1) for SGS and SSA, XBAER-derived results show high correlation with field-based measurements, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.85. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) of SGS and SSA are around 12 µm and 6 m 2 /kg. (2) For SPS, aggregate SPS retrieved by XBAER algorithm is likely to be matched with rounded grains while single SPS in XBAER is possibly linked to faceted crystals. The comparison with aircraft measurements, during the Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project (PAMARCMiP) campaign held in March 2018, also shows good agreement (with R=0.82 and R=0.81 for SGS and SSA, respectively). XBAER-derived SGS and SSA reveal the variability in the aircraft track of the PAMARCMiP campaign. The comparison between XBAER-derived SGS results and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Snow-Covered Area and Grain size (MODSCAG) product over Greenland shows similar spatial distributions. The geographic distribution of XBAER-derived SPS over Greenland and the whole Arctic can be reasonably explained by campaign-based and laboratory investigations, indicating a reasonable retrieval accuracy of the retrieved SPS. Arctic and Subarctic environments are among the most vulnerable regions to climate change. Increases in liquid precipitation and changes in snowmelt onset are cited as the main drivers of change in streamflow and water temperature patterns in some of the largest rivers of the Canadian Arctic. However, in spite of this evidence, there is still a lack of research on water temperature, particularly in the eastern Canadian Arctic. In this paper, we use the CEQUEAU hydrological‐water temperature model to derive consistent long‐term daily flow and stream temperature time series in Aux Mélèzes River, a non‐regulated basin (41 297 km2) in the eastern Canadian subarctic. The model was forced using reanalysis data from the fifth‐generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalyses (ERA5) from 1979 to 2020. We used water temperature derived from thermal infrared (TIR) images as reference data to calibrate CEQUEAU's water temperature model, with calibration performed using single‐site, multi‐site, and upscaling factors approaches. Our results indicate that the CEQUEAU model can simulate streamflow patterns in the river and shows excellent spatiotemporal performance with Kling‐Gupta Efficiency (KGE) metric >0.8. Using the best‐performing flow simulation as one of the inputs allowed us to produce synthetic daily water temperature time series throughout the basin, with the multi‐site calibration approach being the most accurate with root mean square errors (RMSE) <2.0°C. The validation of the water temperature simulations with a three‐year in situ data logger dataset yielded an RMSE = 1.38°C for the summer temperatures, highlighting the robustness of the calibrated parameters and the chosen calibration strategy. This research demonstrates the reliability of TIR imagery and ERA5 as sources of model calibration data in data‐sparse environments and underlines the CEQUEAU model as an assessment tool, opening the door to its use to assess climate change impact on the arctic regions of Canada. Due to the existence of seasonal or perennial sea ice cover, the determination of the Arctic sea surface is more difficult than that of mid-low latitudinal oceans. Focusing on the sea surface height in the ice-covered region, this paper constructs a new Arctic mean sea surface (MSS) model, named SUST22, by combining the measurements from ICESat and Cryosat-2 missions. The lead detection methods of ICESat and Cryosat-2 are first studied and modified to acquire sea surface measurements with better accuracy. The results have shown that the standard deviation of Cryosat-2-derived Arctic sea surface height is about 3–4 cm in 10-km resolution grids, while the value of ICESat is 5–6 cm. Then the MSS construction procedure is discussed and the SUST22 MSS model is constructed. The new model is compared with the other four Arctic MSS models. The best agreement is found between SUST22 and DTU21 with an average difference of −4.0 ± 5.2 cm. These models are also validated by ICESat-2 samples. The average difference between ICESat-2 and SUST22 is 15.8 ± 7.4 cm, which shows that the new model SUST22 presents better consistency with the ICESat-2 than any of the other models. Information about the state of the Arctic sea ice is becoming increasingly important. This paper describes an approach for automatic retrieval of daily thin sea ice thickness maps around Svalbard. The algorithm uses thermal satellite imagery from MODIS to estimate the surface temperature of the ice and further uses a thermal model of the ice surface to estimate the thickness of the sea ice. The approach is usable for thin sea ice, up to ca. 50 cm thick, during cold weather (freezing) conditions and without cloud cover present. The algorithm is compared with helicopter-borne electromagnetic ice thickness measurements. The comparison yields increasing root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) for thicker ice. The lowest RMSD found is 8.7 cm for ice thickness in the range 10 cm < hi ≤ 20 cm. The highest RMSD found is 25.2 cm for ice thickness in the range 30 cm < hi ≤ 40 cm. The bias shows no such trend, and the overall bias is found to be −5.5 cm. The results show that this is a promising approach, allowing monitoring of thin sea ice thickness at relatively higher spatial resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Sea ice concentration (SIC), which is defined as the proportion of a given area of ocean that is covered by ice, is a significant parameter for Arctic sea ice and climate change, an important input for regional climate model and numerical weather prediction model. The passive microwave sensors are able to penetrate the atmosphere and clouds, regardless of observation time, and their data is commonly used to retrieve SIC. Passive microwave obtained from the microwave radiation imager (MWRI) aboard on the Chinese Fengyun‑3 (FY ‑3) series satellites can be used to extract polar SIC. However, the study on its accuracy is limited. Methods: This paper focuses on the application of MWRI to Arctic SIC estimation accuracy, and compares the SIC obtained using special sensor microwave imager sounder (SSMIS), MWRI and advanced microwave scanning radiometer 2 (AMSR2) data, and utilizes Bootstrap, NASA Team (NT), fully constrained least squares (FCLS), Enhanced NASA Team (NT2) and Arctic radiation and turbulence interaction study (ARTIST) sea ice (ASI) methods with the in‑situ data. Results: Validation results show that MWRI has the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) at different spatial resolution (20.4%- 24.4%). FCLS performed better than the other five algorithms for three passive microwave data because the error was considered during the SIC retrieve, the SIC was constrained with non‑negative constrain, and numerical optimization was used to solved the SICs. In addition, MWRI performs well in summer (17.9%-23.0%) and winter (11.2%-17.8%).Conclusions: MWRI has relatively stable performance and a great potential for sea ice monitoring. Uncertainty also exists in evaluation, such as the uncertainty of accuracy of in ‑situ data in Arctic and tie points. Ground-based high resolution observations of downward longwave irradiance (DLI), surface air temperature, water vapor surface partial pressure and column amount, zenith sky infrared (IR) radiance in the atmospheric window, and all-sky camera images are regularly obtained at the Thule High Arctic Atmospheric Observatory (THAAO, 76.5° N, 68.8° W), northwestern Greenland. The datasets for the years 2017 and 2018 have been used to assess the performance of different empirical formulas used to infer clear sky DLI. An algorithm to identify clear sky observations has been developed, based on value, variability, and persistence of zenith sky IR radiance. Seventeen different formulas to estimate DLI have been tested against the THAAO dataset, using the originally determined coefficients. The formulas that combine information on total column water vapor and surface air temperature appear to perform better than others, with a mean bias with respect to the measured DLI smaller than 1 W m -2 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) around 6 W m -2. Unexpectedly, some formulas specifically developed for the Arctic are found to produce poor statistical results. This is attributed partly to limitations in the originally used dataset, which does not cover a whole year or is relative to very specific condition (i.e., the presence of an ice sheet). As expected, the bias displays a significant improvement when the coefficients of the different formulas are calculated using the THAAO dataset. The presence of 2 full years of data allows the determination and the applicability of the coefficients for singular years and the evaluation of results. The smallest values of the bias and RMSE reach 0.1 and 5 W m -2 , respectively. Overall, the best results are found for formulas that use both surface parameters and total water vapor column content, and have been developed from global datasets. Conversely, formulas that express the atmospheric emissivity as a linear function of the logarithm of the column integrated water vapor appear to reproduce poorly the observations at THAAO. Local weather forecasts in the Arctic outside of settlements are challenging due to the dearth of ground-level observation stations and high computational costs. During winter, these forecasts are critical to help prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions, while in spring, these forecasts may be used to determine flood risk during annual snow melt. To this end, a hybrid VMD-WT-InceptionTime model is proposed for multi-horizon multivariate forecasting of remote-region temperatures in Alaska over short-term horizons (the next seven days). First, the Spearman correlation coefficient is employed to analyze the relationship between each input variable and the forecast target temperature. The most output-correlated input sequences are decomposed using variational mode decomposition (VMD) and, ultimately, wavelet transform (WT) to extract time-frequency patterns intrinsic in the raw inputs. The resulting sequences are fed into a deep InceptionTime model for short-term forecasting. This hybrid technique has been developed and evaluated using 35+ years of data from three locations in Alaska. Different experiments and performance benchmarks are conducted using deep learning models (e.g., Time Series Transformers, LSTM, MiniRocket), and statistical and conventional machine learning baselines (e.g., GBDT, SVR, ARIMA). All forecasting performances are assessed using four metrics: the root mean squared error, the mean absolute percentage error, the coefficient of determination, and the mean directional accuracy. The climate in the Arctic has warmed much more quickly in the last 2 to 3 decades than at the mid-latitudes, i.e., during the Arctic amplification (AA) period. Radiative forcing in the Arctic is influenced both directly and indirectly by aerosols. However, their observation from ground or airborne instruments is challenging, and thus measurements are sparse. In this study, total aerosol optical depth (AOD) is determined from top-of-atmosphere reflectance measurements by the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) on board ENVISAT over snow and ice in the Arctic using a retrieval called AEROSNOW for the period 2003 to 2011. AEROSNOW incorporates an existing aerosol retrieval algorithm with a cloud-masking algorithm, alongside a novel quality-flagging methodology specifically designed for implementation in the high Arctic region (≥ 72 ∘ N). We use the dual-viewing capability of the AATSR instrument to accurately determine the contribution of aerosol to the reflection at the top of the atmosphere for observations over the bright surfaces of the cryosphere in the Arctic. The AOD is retrieved assuming that the surface reflectance observed by the satellite can be well parameterized by a bidirectional snow reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The spatial distribution of AOD shows that high values in spring (March, April, May) and lower values in summer (June, July, August) are observed. The AEROSNOW AOD values are consistent with those from collocated Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements, with no systematic bias found as a function of time. The AEROSNOW AOD in the high Arctic was validated by comparison with ground-based measurements at the PEARL, OPAL, Hornsund, and Thule stations. The AEROSNOW AOD value is less than 0.15 on average, and the linear regression of AEROSNOW and AERONET total AOD yields a slope of 0.98, a Pearson correlation coefficient of R=0.86 , and a root mean square error (RMSE) of =0.01 for the monthly scale in both spring and summer. The AEROSNOW observation of increased AOD values over the high Arctic cryosphere during spring confirms clearly that Arctic haze events were well captured by this dataset. In addition, the AEROSNOW AOD results provide a novel and unique total AOD data product for the springtime and summertime from 2003 to 2011. The formation and distribution of melt ponds have an important influence on the Arctic climate. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain more accurate information on melt ponds on Arctic sea ice by remote sensing. The present large-scale melt pond products, especially the melt pond fraction (MPF), still require verification, and using very high resolution optical satellite remote sensing data is a good way to verify the large-scale retrieval of MPF products. Unlike most MPF algorithms using very high resolution data, the LinearPolar algorithm using Sentinel-2 data considers the albedo of melt ponds unfixed. In this paper, by selecting the best band combination, we applied this algorithm to Landsat 8 (L8) data. Moreover, Sentinel-2 data, as well as support vector machine (SVM) and iterative self-organizing data analysis technique (ISODATA) algorithms, are used as the comparison and verification data. The results show that the recognition accuracy of the LinearPolar algorithm for melt ponds is higher than that of previous algorithms. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient results achieved by using the LinearPolar algorithm with L8 and Sentinel-2A (S2), the SVM algorithm, and the ISODATA algorithm are 95.38% and 0.88, 94.73% and 0.86, and 92.40%and 0.80, respectively, which are much higher than those of principal component analysis (PCA) and Markus algorithms. The mean MPF (10.0%) obtained from 80 cases from L8 data based on the LinearPolar algorithm is much closer to Sentinel-2 (10.9%) than the Markus (5.0%) and PCA algorithms (4.2%), with a mean MPF difference of only 0.9%, and the correlation coefficients of the two MPFs are as high as 0.95. The overall relative error of the LinearPolar algorithm is 53.5% and 46.4% lower than that of the Markus and PCA algorithms, respectively, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 30.9% and 27.4% lower than that of the Markus and PCA algorithms, respectively. In the cases without obvious melt ponds, the relative error is reduced more than that of those with obvious melt ponds because the LinearPolar algorithm can identify 100% of dark melt ponds and relatively small melt ponds, and the latter contributes more to the reduction in the relative error of MPF retrieval. With a wider range and longer time series, the MPF from Landsat data are more efficient than those from Sentinel-2 for verifying large-scale MPF products or obtaining long-term monitoring of a fixed area. The low accuracy of satellite cloud fraction (CF) data over the Arctic seriously restricts the accurate assessment of the regional and global radiative energy balance under a changing climate. Previous studies have reported that no individual satellite CF product could satisfy the needs of accuracy and spatiotemporal coverage simultaneously for long-term applications over the Arctic. Merging multiple CF products with complementary properties can provide an effective way to produce a spatiotemporally complete CF data record with higher accuracy. This study proposed a spatiotemporal statistical data fusion framework based on cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching and the Bayesian maximum entropy (BME) method to produce a synthetic 1 ∘ × 1 ∘ CF dataset in the Arctic during 2000–2020. The CDF matching was employed to remove the systematic biases among multiple passive sensor datasets through the constraint of using CF from an active sensor. The BME method was employed to combine adjusted satellite CF products to produce a spatiotemporally complete and accurate CF product. The advantages of the presented fusing framework are that it not only uses the spatiotemporal autocorrelations but also explicitly incorporates the uncertainties of passive sensor products benchmarked with reference data, i.e., active sensor product and ground-based observations. The inconsistencies of Arctic CF between passive sensor products and the reference data were reduced by about 10 %–20 % after fusing, with particularly noticeable improvements in the vicinity of Greenland. Compared with ground-based observations, R2 increased by about 0.20–0.48, and the root mean square error (RMSE) and bias reductions averaged about 6.09 % and 4.04 % for land regions, respectively; these metrics for ocean regions were about 0.05–0.31, 2.85 %, and 3.15 %, respectively. Compared with active sensor data, R2 increased by nearly 0.16, and RMSE and bias declined by about 3.77 % and 4.31 %, respectively, in land; meanwhile, improvements in ocean regions were about 0.3 for R2 , 4.46 % for RMSE, and 3.92 % for bias. The results of the comparison with ERA5 and the Meteorological Research Institute – Atmospheric General Circulation model version 3.2S (MRI-AGCM3-2-S) climate model suggest an obvious improvement in the consistency between the satellite-observed CF and the reanalysis and model data after fusion. This serves as a promising indication that the fused CF results hold the potential to deliver reliable satellite observations for modeling and reanalysis data. Moreover, the fused product effectively supplements the temporal gaps of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based products caused by satellite faults and the data missing from MODIS-based products prior to the launch of Aqua, and it extends the temporal range better than the active product; it addresses the spatial insufficiency of the active sensor data and the AVHRR-based products acquired at latitudes greater than 82.5 ∘ N. A continuous monthly 1 ∘ CF product covering the entire Arctic during 2000–2020 was generated and is freely available to the public at 10.5281/zenodo.7624605 (Liu and He, 2022). Under global climate change, the characteristics of oceanic dynamics are gradually beginning to change due to melting sea ice. This study focused on inter-annual variation in waves and mesoscale eddies (radius > 40 km) in the Arctic Ocean from 1993 to 2021. The waves were simulated by a numerical wave model, WAVEWATCH-III (WW3), which included a parameterization of ice–wave interaction. The long-term wind data were from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis (ERA-5), and current and sea level data from the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM)were used as the forcing fields. The simulated significant wave heights (SWHs) were validated against the 2012 measurements from the Jason-2 altimeter, yielding a 0.55 m root mean square error (RMSE) with a 0.95 correlation (COR). The seasonal variation in WW3-simulated SWH from 2021 to 2022 showed that the SWH was the lowest in summer (July and August 2021) and highest in winter (November 2021 to April 2022). This result indicates that parts of the Arctic could become navigable in summer. The mesoscale eddies were identified using a daily-averaged sea level anomalies (SLA) product with a spatial resolution of a 0.25° grid for 1993−2021. We found that the activity intensity (EKE) and radius of mesoscale eddies in the spatial distribution behaved in opposing ways. The analysis of seasonal variation showed that the increase in eddy activity could lead to wave growth. The amplitude of SWH peaks was reduced when the Arctic Oscillation Index (AOI) was <−1.0 and increased when the AOI was >0.5, especially in the case of swells. The amplitude of SWH oscillation was low, and the EKE and radius of eddies were relatively small. In this study, a new technique is proposed to retrieve temperature and relative humidity profiles under clear sky conditions in the Arctic region based on the artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm using Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) vertical atmospheric sounder suit (VASS: HIRAS, MWTS-II, and MWHS-II) observations. This technology combines infrared (IR) and microwave (MW) observations to improve retrieval accuracy in the middle and low troposphere by reducing the sensitivity of the neural networks (NNs) to cloud coverage. The approach was compared against other methods available in the literature on retrieving profiles only from FY-3D/HIRAS data. Furthermore, its retrieval performance was tested by comparing the NNs' prediction accuracy versus the corresponding FY-3D/VASS and Aqua/AIRS L2 products. The results showed that: (1) NNs retrieval accuracy is higher during the warm season and over the ocean; (2) the retrieval accuracy of NNs has been significantly improved compared with satellite L2 products; (3) referring to radiosonde observations, the retrieval accuracy of NNs below 600 hPa is effectively improved by adding the information of the MW channel, especially on land where cloud clearing is more difficult. The root mean square error (RMSE) of temperature and relative humidity in the cold season were reduced by 0.3 K and 2%, respectively. The advanced NNs proposed herein offer a more stable retrieval performance compared with NNs built only by FY-3D/HIRAS data. The study results indicated the potential value in time and space domain of the NN algorithm in retrieving temperature and relative humidity profiles of the Arctic region from FY-3D/VASS observations under clear-sky conditions. The extensive global climate observing system (GCOS) reference upper-air network (GRUAN) datasets provide a chance to validate newly released Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) version 7 (v7) products over the Arctic. This manuscript reports on the analysis performed to evaluate errors from AIRS version 6 (v6) and v7 temperature profiles and to characterize the derived low-level temperature inversion (LLI) representativeness in the Arctic region. The AIRS averaging kernel, representing the AIRS measurement sensitivity, is applied to reduce the vertical resolution of the radiosonde profiles for comparison. Due to improved retrieval algorithms, v7 produces smaller biases in the troposphere and suppresses the cold bias in v6. Nevertheless, the profile-averaged root mean square error (RMSE) increased by over 30% in v7, particularly in the winter half-year when v7 showed a larger RMSE below 800 hPa. The AIRS temperature retrieval accuracy is primarily sensitive to surface type and cloud fraction. Compared to v6, v7 has less bias over frozen land and sea ice in different cloud fraction conditions. However, the RMSEs of v7 are more sensitive to the effective cloud fraction (ECF) and are highly influenced by a more significant contribution from nonfrozen land samples. Compared to the kernel-averaged radiosonde profiles, more than 80% of the temperature profiles from v6 and v7 accurately detect LLIs. The discreteness of the AIRS's predefined pressure level results is consistent with the radiosondes only 65% of the time for LLI depth calculation. In contrast, the AIRS can obtain LLI intensity with a relatively high correlation (>0.9). With the AIRS temperature retrieval in the boundary layer further improved, it has the potential to be used as an independent LLI detector in the Arctic region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces the Continuity Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Cloud Mask (MVCM), a cloud detection algorithm designed to facilitate continuity in cloud detection between the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on the Aqua and Terra platforms and the series of VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instruments, beginning with the Soumi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft. It is based on the MODIS cloud mask that has been operating since 2000 with the launch of the Terra spacecraft (MOD35) and continuing in 2002 with Aqua (MYD35). The MVCM makes use of fourteen spectral bands that are common to both MODIS and VIIRS so as to create consistent cloud detection between the two instruments and across the years 2000–2020 and beyond. Through comparison data sets, including collocated Aqua MODIS and Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) from the A-Train, this study was designed to assign statistical consistency benchmarks between the MYD35 and MVCM cloud masks. It is shown that the MVCM produces consistent cloud detection results between Aqua MODIS, SNPP VIIRS, and NOAA-20 VIIRS and that the quality is comparable to the standard Aqua MODIS cloud mask. Globally, comparisons with collocated CALIOP lidar show combined clear and cloudy sky hit rates of 88.2%, 87.5%, 86.8%, and 86.8% for MYD35, MVCM Aqua MODIS, MVCM SNPP VIIRS, and MVCM NOAA-20 VIIRS, respectively, for June through until August, 2018. For the same months and in the same order for 60S–60N, hit rates are 90.7%, 90.5%, 90.1%, and 90.3%. From the time series constructed from gridded daily means of 60S–60N cloud fractions, we found that the mean day-to-day cloud fraction differences/standard deviations in percent to be 0.68/0.55, 0.94/0.64, −0.20/0.50, and 0.44/0.82 for MVCM Aqua MODIS-MVCM SNPP VIIRS day and night, and MVCM NOAA-20 VIIRS-MVCM SNPP VIIRS day and night, respectively. It is seen that the MODIS and VIIRS 1.38 µm cirrus detection bands perform similarly but with MODIS detecting slightly more clouds in the middle to high levels of the troposphere and the VIIRS detecting more in the upper troposphere above 16 km. In this paper, we presented a method for retrieving sea surface wind speed (SSWS) from Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) horizontal-horizontal (HH) polarization data in extra-wide (EW) swath mode, which have been extensively acquired over the Arctic for polar monitoring. In contrast to the conventional algorithm, i.e., using a geophysical model function (GMF) to retrieve SSWS by spaceborne SAR, we introduced an alternative retrieval method based on a GMF-guided neural network. The SAR normalized radar cross section, incidence angle, and wind direction are used as the inputs of a back propagation (BP) neural network, and the output is the SSWS. The network is developed based on 11,431 HH-polarized EW images acquired in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Arctic from 2015 to 2018 and their collocated scatterometer wind measurements. Verification of the neural network based on the testing dataset yields a bias of 0.23 m/s and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.25 m/s compared to the scatterometer wind data for wind speeds less than approximately 30 m/s. Further comparison of the SAR retrieved SSWS with independent buoy measurements shows a bias and RMSE of 0.12 m/s and 1.42 m/s, respectively. We also analyzed the uncertainty of the retrieval when reanalysis model wind direction data are used as inputs to the neural network. By combining the detected sea ice cover information based on SAR data, sea ice and marine-meteorological parameters can be derived simultaneously by spaceborne SAR at a high spatial resolution in the Arctic. Climate change is occurring rapidly in the Arctic, and an improved understanding of the response of aquatic biota and ecosystems will be important for this data‐limited region. Here, we applied biochronology techniques and mixed‐effects modelling to assess relationships among growth increments found on lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) otoliths (N = 49) captured from 13 lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska, observed and modelled climate patterns, and individual‐level fish and lake characteristics. We found that annual growth varied by year, fish growth slowed significantly as individuals aged, and females grew faster than males. Lake trout had higher growth in flow‐through lakes relative to lakes that were perennially or seasonally connected. Annual growth was positively correlated with observed air temperature measurements from a local weather station for the period 1998–2014, but no clear warming trend was evident for this period. Modelled August air temperatures from 1978–2014 predicted lake trout annual growth (root mean squared error = 0.045 mm) and indicated increasing temperatures and annual lake trout growth over the period 1950–2014. This study demonstrated that biochronology techniques can reconstruct recent climate patterns and provide a better understanding of trends in Arctic lake ecosystems under a changing climate. Although snow depth on sea ice is a key parameter for sea ice thickness (SIT) retrieval, there currently does not exist reliable estimations. In the Arctic, nearly all SIT products use a snow depth climatology (the modified Warren-99 climatology, W99m) constructed from in situ data obtained prior to the first significant impacts of climate change. In the Antarctic, the lack of information on snow depth remains a major obstacle in the development of reliable SIT products. In this study, we present the latest version of the altimetric snow depth (ASD) product computed over both hemispheres from the difference of the radar penetration into the snow pack between the Ka-band frequency SARAL/Altika and the Ku-band frequency CryoSat-2. The ASD solution is compared against a wide range of snow depth products including model data (Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modelling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) or its equivalent in the Antarctic the Global Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (GIOMAS), the MERCATOR model, and NASA's Eulerian Snow On Sea Ice Model (NESOSIM, only in the Arctic)), the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) passive radiometer data, and the Dual-altimeter Snow Thickness (DuST) Ka–Ku product (only in the Arctic). The ASD product is further validated in the Arctic against the ice mass balance (IMB) buoys, the CryoSat Validation Experiment (CryoVEx) and Operation Ice Bridge's (OIB) airborne measurements. These comparisons demonstrate that ASD is a relevant snow depth solution, with spatiotemporal patterns consistent with those of the alternative Ka–Ku DuST product but with a mean bias of about 6.5 cm. We also demonstrate that ASD is consistent with the validation data: comparisons with OIB's airborne snow radar in the Arctic during the period of 2014–2018 show a correlation of 0.66 and a RMSE of about 6 cm. Furthermore, a first-guess monthly climatology has been constructed in the Arctic from the ASD product, which shows a good agreement with OIB during 2009–2012. This climatology is shown to provide a better solution than the W99m climatology when compared with validation data. Finally, we have characterised the SIT uncertainty due to the snow depth from an ensemble of SIT solutions computed for the Arctic by using the different snow depth products previously used in the comparison with the ASD product. During the period of 2013–2019, we found a spatially averaged SIT mean standard deviation of 20 cm. Deviations between SIT estimations due to snow depths can reach up to 77 cm. Data on surface solar radiation are scarce in high‐latitude regions, and few studies have evaluated the performance of reanalysis products in estimating solar radiation in those regions. Here, an extensive solar radiation dataset is compiled from 98 stations across Alaska to evaluate 11 different surface solar radiation products (seven reanalysis and four observation‐derived). No product can capture all aspects of the ground‐based observations, and there is ample room for improvement; root mean square errors (RMSEs) of daily, monthly, and annual average comparisons of the products against observations are 38–65, 19–39, and 11–17 W⋅m−2, respectively. ERA5, MERRA2, and ERA‐Interim performed the best in Alaska. Daily records from all products show large RMSEs of 60–108 W⋅m−2 during May–July, equivalent to 30–55% of the observed solar radiation during this season. Measurements of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) performed between January and June 2020 at 10 Arctic and subarctic locations are compared with historical observations. Differences between 2020 and prior years are also assessed with total ozone column and UVR data from satellites. Erythemal (sunburning) UVR is quantified with the UV Index (UVI) derived from these measurements. UVI data show unprecedently large anomalies, occurring mostly between early March and mid‐April 2020. For several days, UVIs observed in 2020 exceeded measurements of previous years by up to 140%. Historical means were surpassed by more than six standard deviations at several locations in the Arctic. In northern Canada, the average UVI for March was about 75% larger than usual. UVIs in April 2020 were elevated on average by about 25% at all sites. However, absolute anomalies remained below 3.0 UVI units because the enhancements occurred during times when the solar elevation was still low. Plain Language Summary: The ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the Sun depends on the amount of ozone in the atmosphere. During March and April 2020, ozone concentrations in the Arctic atmosphere were exceptionally low and this led to large increases in UV radiation at the surface. Realizing high-resolution (sub-kilometer scale) automatic detection of sea ice drift from massive Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data is an important requirement for mastering polar sea ice dynamics and better understanding global climate change. A fully automatic SAR sea ice drift detection method has been developed in this paper, which is based on the idea of multi-scale observation. First, ice cracks or lead structures was detected from down-sampled sequential SAR images. Because the ice cracks or leads have scattering intensities and shape features which differ significantly from the surrounding ice regions, these structures can help to detect the overall drift of the sea ice region which we called the trend of ice drift (TID). Then, a modified feature tracking (FT) method was used to extract sea ice drift vectors from the original SAR imagery by considering the constraints of TID. The aims of the proposed algorithm are to improve the accuracy of sea ice drift retrieval and the spatial density of ice drift vectors, as well as reducing execution time. Three pairs of dual-polarization Sentinel-1 SAR images of the Arctic were used for experimental validation. The experimental results show that the proposed method takes the least time, and the extracted sea ice drift vector is far more than the classical Speeded-up Robust Features (SURF) method and Normalized cross-correlation (NCC) method in both spatial density and area coverage. In terms of the accuracy of sea ice drift speed and direction detection, for HH polarization, the sea ice drift speed retrieved by the proposed method has a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.158 cm/s and a relative error (RE) of 1.838 %; and the RMSE of retrieved sea ice drift direction is 0.112° and the RE is 0.267 %. For HV polarization, the RMSE of sea ice drift velocity inversion is 0.138 cm/s and RE is 1.504 %; the RMSE of sea ice drift direction inversion is 0.123°and RE is 0.753 %. The most discernible and devastating impacts of climate change are caused by events with temporary extreme conditions (‘‘extreme events’’) or abrupt shifts to a new persistent climate state (‘‘tipping points’’). The rapidly growing amount of data from models and observations poses the challenge to reliably detect where, when, why, and how these events occur. This situation calls for data-mining approaches that can detect and diagnose events in an automatic and reproducible way. Here, we apply a new strategy to this task by generalizing the classical machine-vision problem of detecting edges in 2D images to many dimensions (including time). Our edge detector identifies abrupt or extreme climate events in spatio temporal data, quantifies their abruptness (or extremeness), and provides diagnostics that help one to understand the causes of these shifts. We also publish a comprehensive toolset of code that is documented and free to use. We document the performance of the new edge detector by analyzing several datasets of observations and models. In particular, we apply it to all monthly 2D variables of the RCP8.5 scenario of the Coupled Model Inter comparison Project (CMIP5). More than half of all simulations show abrupt shifts of more than 4 standard deviations on a time scale of 10 years. These shifts are mostly related to the loss of sea ice and permafrost in the Arctic. Our results demonstrate that the edge detector is particularly useful to scan large datasets in an efficient way, for example multi model or perturbed-physics ensembles. Passive microwave satellite brightness temperatures (TB) that were observed by the F13 Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) and the subsequent F17 Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) were inter-calibrated using empirical relationship models during their overlap period. Snow depth (SD) on the Arctic first-year sea ice was further retrieved. The SDs derived from F17 TB and F13C TB which were calibrated F17 TB using F13 TB as the baseline were then compared and evaluated against in situ SD measurements based on the Operational IceBridge (OIB) airborne observations from 2009 to 2013. Results show that Cavalieri inter-calibration models (CA models) perform smaller root mean square error (RMSE) than Dai inter-calibration models (DA models), and the standard deviation of OIB SDs in the 25 km pixels is around 6 cm on first-year sea ice. Moreover, the SDs derived from the calibrated F17 TB using F13 TB as the baseline were in better agreement than the F17 SDs as compared with OIB SDs, with the biases of -2 cm (RMSE of 5 cm) and -9 cm (RMSE of 10 cm), respectively. We conclude that TB observations from F17 SSMIS calibrated to F13 SSM/I as the baseline should be recommended when performing the sensors' biases correction for SD purpose based on the existing algorithm. These findings could serve as a reference for generating more consistent and reliable TB, which could help to improve the retrieval and analysis of long-term snow depth on the Arctic first-year sea ice. NASA's Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) mission was launched in September 2018. The sole instrument onboard ICESat-2 is ATLAS, a highly precise laser that now provides routine, very-high-resolution, surface height measurements across the globe, including over the Arctic. To further improve the detection accuracy of the sea ice concentration (SIC), we demonstrate a new processing chain that can be used to convert the along-track sea ice freeboard products (ATL10) obtained by ICESat-2 into the SIC, with our initial efforts being focused on the Arctic. For this conversion, we primarily make use of the classification results from the type (sea ice or lead) and segment length data gathered from ATL10. The along-track SIC is the ratio of the area that is covered by sea ice segments to the area of all of the along-track segments. We generated a monthly gridded SIC product with a 25 km resolution and compared this to the NSIDC Climate Data Record (CDR) sea ice concentration. The highest correlation was determined to be 0.7690 in September at high latitudes and the lowest correlation was found to be 0.8595 in June at mid-latitudes. The regions with large standard deviations in summer and autumn are mainly distributed in the thin-ice areas at mid-latitudes. In the Laptev Sea and Kara Sea of east Siberia, the differences in the standard deviation were large; the maximum bias was −0.1566, in November, and the minimum bias was −0.0216, in June. Arctic sea ice and snow affect the energy balance of the global climate system through the radiation budget. Accurate determination of the snow cover over Arctic sea ice is significant for the retrieval of the sea ice thickness (SIT). In this study, we developed a new snow depth retrieval method over Arctic sea ice with a long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning algorithm based on Operation IceBridge (OIB) snow depth data and brightness temperature data of AMSR-2 passive microwave radiometers. We compared climatology products (modified W99 and AWI), altimeter products (Kwok) and microwave radiometer products (Bremen, Neural Network and LSTM). The climatology products and altimeter products are completely independent of the OIB data used for training, while microwave radiometer products are not completely independent of the OIB data. We also compared the SITs retrieved from the above different snow depth products based on Cryosat-2 radar altimeter data. First, the snow depth spatial patterns for all products are in broad agreement, but the temporal evolution patterns are distinct. Snow products of microwave radiometers, such as Bremen, Neural Network and LSTM snow depth products, show thicker snow in early winter with respect to the climatology snow depth products and the altimeter snow depth product, especially in the multiyear ice (MYI) region. In addition, the differences in all snow depth products are relatively large in the early winter and relatively small in spring. Compared with the OIB and IceBird observation data (April 2019), the snow depth retrieved by the LSTM algorithm is better than that retrieved by the other algorithms in terms of accuracy, with a correlation of 0.55 (0.90), a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.06 m (0.05 m) and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.05 m (0.04 m). The spatial pattern and seasonal variation of the SITs retrieved from different snow depths are basically consistent. The total sea ice decreases first and then thickens as the seasons change. Compared with the OIB SIT in April 2019, the SIT retrieved by the LSTM snow depth is superior to that retrieved by the other SIT products in terms of accuracy, with the highest correlation of 0.46, the lowest RMSE of 0.59 m and the lowest MAE of 0.44 m. In general, it is promising to retrieve Arctic snow depth using the LSTM algorithm, but the retrieval of snow depth over MYI still needs to be verified with more measured data, especially in early winter. Mapping and monitoring of Arctic vegetation biochemical and biophysical properties is gaining importance as global climate change is disproportionately affecting this region. Previous studies using remote sensing to model Arctic vegetation biochemical and biophysical properties have generally involved empirical modelling with nadir looking broadband sensors and have typically been conducted at the field scale in one study area. Satellite hyperspectral remote sensing has not been previously investigated for retrieving leaf and canopy biochemical and biophysical properties of Arctic vegetation across multiple sites using either empirical or physically-based modelling approaches. Furthermore, multi-angle hyperspectral sensors (CHRIS/PROBA), which can provide insight into vegetation reflectance anisotropy and potentially improve vegetation parameter estimation, have also not been investigated for this purpose. In this study, three modelling approaches previously investigated with field spectroscopy data (Kennedy et al., 2020) were used with CHRIS Mode-1 imagery to predict leaf chlorophyll content, plant area index and canopy chlorophyll content across a bioclimatic gradient in the Western Canadian Arctic. Modelling approaches included: parametric linear regression based on vegetation indices (VI), non-parametric machine learning Gaussian processes regression (GPR) and inversion of the PROSAIL radiative transfer model using a look-up table approach (LUT). CHRIS imagery was acquired with −55°, −36°, 0°, +36°, +55° view zenith angles (VZA) between 2011 and 2014 over three field sites extending from the Richardson Mountains in central Yukon, Canada to the north end of Banks Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. Field measurements were acquired within several weeks of satellite acquisitions. GPR had the best model fit (mean cross-validated (cv) coefficient of determination, r2cv = 0.61 across all vegetation variables, sites and VZAs vs. 0.59 for the simple ratio, SR) and predictive performance (normalized root mean square error, NRMSEcv = 0.13 vs. 0.14 for SR). The revised optimized soil adjusted VI (ROSAVI) performance was slightly poorer (r2cv = 0.51; NRMSEcv = 0.15). The physically-based PROSAIL model performed poorer than all empirical models (r2 = 0.50; NRMSE = 0.18). This ranking of model performance is similar to that found in the previous field spectroscopy study, where empirical model fits and predictive performance were only slightly worse. With respect to view angle performance, NRMSE varied only slightly, indicating no distinct advantage for any one VZA. Overall, strong potential has been demonstrated for empirical modelling of Arctic vegetation chlorophyll and plant area index using hyperspectral data combined with band selection/optimization procedures in the Arctic. Shrub proliferation across the Arctic from climate warming is expanding herbivore habitat but may also alter forage quality. Dietary fibers—an important component of forage quality—influence shrub palatability, and changes in dietary fiber concentrations may have broad ecological implications. While airborne hyperspectral instruments may effectively estimate dietary fibers, such data captures a limited portion of landscapes. Satellite data such as the multispectral WorldView-3 (WV-3) instrument may enable dietary fiber estimation to be extrapolated across larger areas. We assessed how variation in dietary fibers of Salix alaxensis (Andersson), a palatable northern shrub, could be estimated using hyperspectral and multispectral WV-3 spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) in a greenhouse setting, and whether including structural information (i.e., leaf area) would improve predictions. We collected canopy-level hyperspectral reflectance readings, which we convolved to the band equivalent reflectance of WV-3. We calculated every possible SVI combination using hyperspectral and convolved WV-3 bands. We identified the best performing SVIs for both sensors using the coefficient of determination (adjusted R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) using simple linear regression. Next, we assessed the importance of plant structure by adding shade leaf area, sun leaf area, and total leaf area to models individually. We evaluated model fits using Akaike's information criterion for small sample sizes and conducted leave-one-out cross validation. We compared cross validation slopes and predictive power (Spearman rank coefficients ρ) between models. Hyperspectral SVIs (R2 = 0.48–0.68; RMSE = 0.04–0.91%) outperformed WV-3 SVIs (R2 = 0.13–0.35; RMSE = 0.05–1.18%) for estimating dietary fibers, suggesting hyperspectral remote sensing is best suited for estimating dietary fibers in a palatable northern shrub. Three dietary fibers showed improved predictive power when leaf area metrics were included (cross validation ρ = +2–8%), suggesting plant structure and the light environment may augment our ability to estimate some dietary fibers in northern landscapes. Climate change results in the alteration of the size structure of plankton, which consequently may affect higher trophic levels, such as planktivorous seabirds. In this study Laser Optical Plankton Counter measurements were performed over seven summer seasons (2010-2016) to test the ratio of large versus small zooplankton in relation to environmental conditions. Investigated transects were repeated during the same time of the year (July/August) in different zones of the West Spitsbergen Shelf crossing the Arctic front. The plankton particles were grouped into two size fractions: "Calanus", potentially consisting of a majority of the high-energetic, older life stages of the preferred prey for little auk (Alle alle) and the "small" fraction including less preferred items. The vertical availability of the Calanus fraction was tested on the background of usually abundant smaller zooplankton, which may hinder the detection of larger zooplankters by little auk. Larger zooplankton were found closer to the coast, in the upper 20-m depth layer in years characterized by significantly lower mean temperatures. Potential availability of prey for the little auk thus could be higher in colder years than in warmer years. Additionally, our study indicated the tendency of the small plankton fraction to concentrate near the locations of the highest chlorophyll fluorescence, in the 20-30-m water layer. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the data indicated a variation in the proportion of large versus small zooplankton, and thus in the availability of Calanus to little auk with respect to temperature.
