Green innovation is an important driver for the sustainable development of the real economy and the realization of a green transformation. Previous studies have paid less attention to the relationship between dividend payments and the persistence of green innovation and neglected the mechanism of knowledge management on the relationship between the two. Using Chinese listed non-financial companies from 2007 to 2022, this paper empirically investigates the effect and mechanism of dividend payment on corporate green innovation persistence based on two perspectives: principal–agent theory and incentive theory, using Tobit and negative binomial models. It was found that there is a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship between dividend payments and the persistence of green innovation. Dividend payments influence the persistence of green innovation through agency costs and knowledge management capabilities. Both independent director networks and knowledge spillovers have a positive impact on the relationship between the two. Based on firms' characteristics, the inverted U-shaped relationship between dividend payment and green innovation persistence is found to be more significant for non-state-owned firms and high-tech firms. Depending on the shareholder type, the inverted U-shaped curve between dividend payments for shareholding managers and green innovation persistence is the steepest. This study enriches the relevant literature on green innovations. In addition, it provides companies with a reference for formulating appropriate dividend policies, improving knowledge management capabilities, and improving the persistence of green innovation at a firm level. Knowledge spillovers, driven by development and research projects, are crucial in generating new companies and services. They enhance innovation, improve competitiveness, and sustain the economic growth of nations. Hence, this paper aims to examine the relationship between knowledge spillovers and economic growth. It offers a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on the relationship between knowledge spillovers and economic growth, investigating the impact of economic cycles on knowledge spillover. Doing this provides valuable insights into how to leverage them at the different stages of the economic cycle. Hence, a PRIMA systematic review was conducted. Articles from the last 15 years were analyzed from repositories and scientific databases with a Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.8902. This review identifies and presents a systematic analysis of the impacts of favoring and hindering knowledge spillovers in the economic growth of a nation. These effects offer greater resilience to a nation after periods of recession. In addition, the case study of three countries is presented to illustrate the findings from the review. The results show that better utilizing knowledge spillovers to enhance economic growth depends on a functional compromise between the university, industry, and governments to understand and commit to knowledge-based economic development. The global digitization trend provides a favorable development environment for the efficient acquisition of knowledge and technology. However, restrictions imposed by countries on digital trade have hindered this trend. This study is based on 60 sample countries to study the impact of the digital trade barrier (DTB) on the technology innovation efficiency (TIE) of each country and the pathways from 2014 to 2020. Research finds that DTB significantly inhibits TIE. Among the five different policy fields that form DTB, Infrastructure and Connecting DTB and Other DTB have the greatest negative impact on TIE. A mechanism analysis found that DTB increases the difficulty of acquiring knowledge spillover and the high cost of research and development, leading to the mismatch and low efficiency of innovation resources, ultimately leading to a reduction in technological innovation efficiency in various countries. Participating in international technological innovation networks and improving technological innovation capabilities have a moderating effect on the aforementioned negative impacts that is beneficial for the sustainable development of national technological innovation. Heterogeneity tests indicate that countries with weaker innovation capabilities, low- and middle-income countries, and countries that have not joined the OECD have a more significant negative impact. This study serves as an important reference for the government to adjust digital trade policies and guide the effective use of external resources for sustainable and efficient technological innovation. Transitioning from a linear economy to a circular economy (CE) supports the realisation of societal values towards more sustainable development. This article identifies mechanisms by which circularity can be embedded in entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) through the flow of relevant knowledge and values. It presents a dynamic model that illustrates how reverse knowledge spillovers from entrepreneurs can complement traditional technological knowledge spillovers from incumbents, ultimately advocating for CE values and validating circular knowledge. The validated circular knowledge, in turn, alters the knowledge filter of incumbents, leading to shifts in their research and development (R&D) focus and their willingness to embrace new knowledge. This symbiotic relationship of knowledge spillovers between circular start-ups and incumbents can significantly enhance the motivation of participants in EEs to adopt CE values and leverage circular knowledge. The paper is the first attempt to integrate microdata on universities and firms across most European countries in order to disentangle the impact of knowledge spillovers from human capital (graduates) and intellectual capital (codified research output) on the performance of firms. Data cover all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) registered in the official European Tertiary Education Register (ETER). Data on performance of firms are from ORBIS and refer to change in the 2011–2015 period in turnover, total assets, intangible assets, and employment. Firms are georeferred and the spillovers from all HEIs located at a given distance are summed and integrated. The findings suggest that, among knowledge spillovers, the creation of human capital via education of students has a larger impact than the circulation of research knowledge. Moreover, the two factors seem to be complements rather than substitutes. Spatial proximity is important for embodied knowledge spillovers (i.e. educated people), while for codified and disembodied spillovers (citations to publications) the spatial dimension is less relevant. Previous empirical studies have highlighted the importance of the institutional framework in fostering a transition towards the circular economy (CE). Adopting a dynamic approach, which merges three Flash Eurobarometer surveys conducted in 2015, 2017 and 2021 into a single dataset, we observe the evolution in the factors determining the adoption of CE practices. Firstly, using factor analysis, our results indicate two groups of institutional drivers: knowledge and environmental spillovers. Secondly, applying a multivariate probit model, we observe that both spillovers have a positive effect on the adoption of the CE. Finally, we find that the effect of knowledge spillovers remains relatively constant, while that of environmental spillovers tends to increase. This suggests that firms are increasingly benefiting from the adoption of circular practices by their peers. Policymakers should take into account that a more intense knowledge spillovers and a stronger institutional framework will increase the likelihood of European small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) adopting CE practices. Objectives The aim of the paper is to measure innovation capital of Polish cities and verify whether its dispersion changed. Material and methods Data was retrieved from the Local Data Bank provided by Statistics Poland. The sample consists of 18 Polish cities. The research period covers years 2014-2021. The TOPSIS method was applied to build the innovation capital index of cities and sigma convergence of innovation capital was verified. Results The findings indicate relatively high cross-sectional disparities in the vast majority of the investigated indicators of cities’ innovation capital. The largest disparities were identified for the number of higher education graduates and the new registered enterprises in high-tech services sector. The constructed composite indicator - innovation capital index took the highest average values in the analysed period for Wrocław, Poznań, Kraków, Warszawa, and Lublin, whereas Gorzów Wielkopolski, Zielona Góra, Bydgoszcz, and Białystok achieved the lowest values. The sigma convergence analysis revealed that the differentiation of innovation capital in Polish cities remained at a similar level and there was no convergence in this area. Conclusions Innovation capital plays a key role in the development of urban economy. Given the complexity of innovation capital, its measurement should comprise a set of indicators reflecting both output and input dimensions. Identification of spatial patterns of innovation capital distribution should enable to adjust smart specialization strategy to territorial characteristics of a given city.

The purpose of this study was to synthesize the literature that has been established on the interrelationship of “knowledge spillovers and entrepreneurial ecosystem” through a systematic literature review. The query strings generated 85 articles, of which 51 were selected for final review. The analysis was performed using MySLR software that uses the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method, and the effectiveness was measured through the perplexity score and coherence value of the topics. The results reveal that although a plethora of literature is available on these two topics individually, the mutual relationship between these two concepts is understudied. A stronger research interest was observed after 2018 which indicates the infancy of the topic as a whole, which is yet to be explored and empirically tested, specifically in developing economies. Most of the research was focused on the role of universities, innovation, geographic dynamics and policies with respect to entrepreneurial ecosystems. Results reveal the disparity of knowledge spillovers with regard to other contributors; significantly lesser attention was paid to its role in relation to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Along with critical analysis and synthesis of literature, future directions have also been presented in the paper.

Multi-scale urban innovation networks are important channels for intra- and inter-city knowledge spillovers and play an important role in urban industrial innovation and growth. However, there is a lack of direct evidence on the impact of multi-scale urban innovation networks on industrial development. Drawing upon the "buzz-and-pipeline" model, this paper analyzes the impact of multi-scale urban innovation networks on industrial development by taking the automobile manufacturing industry in China's five urban agglomerations as an example. Firstly, based on the Form of Correlation between International Patent Classification and Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (2018) and co-patents, we construct urban innovation networks on three different geographical scales, including intra-city innovation networks, inter-city innovation networks within urban agglomerations, and innovation networks between cities within and beyond urban agglomerations. Then, we employ the ordinary least squares model with fixed effects at the urban agglomeration level to explore the impact of urban multi-scale knowledge linkages on the development of the automobile manufacturing industry and the results showed that urban innovation networks at three different geographical scales have different impacts on industrial development. Specifically, intra-city innovation networks have a facilitating effect on industrial development, while both inter-city innovation networks within urban agglomerations and innovation networks between cities within and beyond urban agglomerations have an inverted U-shaped impact on industrial development. The interactions between urban innovation networks on three different geographical scales have a negative effect on industrial development. Simultaneously, the agglomeration level of urban industry plays a positive moderating role in the impacts of multi-scale urban innovation networks on industrial development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under the New Pattern of Development, knowledge-based entrepreneurial activities have become avital locomotive for high-quality economic growth. The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship(KSTE)posits that, due to knowledge filters such as organizational inertia, cultural orientation, and resource and capabilities, knowledge-creating organizations as called incumbent organizations are unable to fully commercialize their newly created knowledge. The value embedded in the knowledge is rather realized through venturing behaviors outside the incumbent organizations. As such, this research first overviews the literature related to KSTE by focusing on its two theoretical premises: knowledge filters and knowledge spillovers. Then, this research conducts a comprehensive literature review and organizes this line of inquiry into a framework which includes five parts: levels of analysis, sources and measures of knowledge spillovers, types and measures of knowledge-spillover-based entrepreneurship, factors influencing the process of knowledge-spillover-based entrepreneurship, and outcomes of such entrepreneurial activities. By doing so, this research also uncovers the major limitations of KSTE. Second and more importantly, this research summarizes KSTE studies that were conducted by the research group of digitalization strategy andinnovation at Xi'an Jiaotong University and explicates four theoretical breakthroughs made by this research group:(1)proposes and empirically testes the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship in alliances. It is suggested that partners' knowledge protection can be regarded as an important form of knowledge filters in alliances. As such, this research group extends the theoretical boundary of KSTE and examines the learning paradox in alliances by introducing KSTE from the national level of analysis to organizational and interorganizational levels.(2)This research group proposes and differentiates cultural knowledge filters and capability knowledge filters. Such differences have been investigated in two different countries: the US and India. KSTE has therefore been enriched as different types of knowledge filters have been analyzed.(3)The research group examines how institutional factors such as national institutions, government policy and tax support, government transparency, market competitiveness, and industry technological turbulence can function as boundary conditions for KSTE. In addition, the interaction effects between these institutional factors have also been examined. By doing so, the theoretical boundaries of KSTE have been specified.(4)The research group develops a novel concept of national entrepreneurial values and examines its moderating role in the link between national knowledge creation and employee venturing behaviors. In this case, this research group is able to empirically examine the core theoretical relationships at the national level. Finally, this research develops several promising research directions based on the main limitations of this line of literature. In a nutshell, KSTE posits that knowledge filters are barriers that can block the transformation of organizational knowledge to commercialized knowledge, suggests that entrepreneurship especially employee venturing behaviors is an important mechanism that can penetrate knowledge filters, and argues that entrepreneurship becomes an importantconduit of knowledge spillovers. All these important propositions of KSTE are aligned perfectly with the main ideas of knowledge economy that emphasizes the creation, sharing, and exploitation of knowledge. Therefore, KSTE becomes an important conduit through which to show how knowledge at the national and organizational levels can promote economic growth and enhance social welfare. Prior work has maintained that organizations benefit from managing the transfer of proprietary knowledge. Transfer is often advantageous within organizational boundaries but may be harmful across them, because it might erode competitive advantage. Hence, we ask: How can organizations affect the direction in which knowledge flows? We examine the role of organizational climate as a governing mechanism for knowledge transfer. Our empirical strategy consists of a mixed-methods approach leveraging qualitative and experimental data over two cycles of theory building and theory testing. We start with an extensive field study of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), leveraging the insights from desk research, field observations, 53 interviews, and a laboratory-in-the-field experiment involving 518 physicists. We then provide a causal test of the emerging framework by means of two laboratory experiments with 389 participants. Our findings suggest employees are more likely to transfer knowledge to their colleagues when they identify as an integral part of the organization, but they would rather transfer knowledge to outside competitors when their organization encourages them to outperform coworkers. In the presence of an organizational climate that is unfavorable to preventing knowledge spillovers, we argue, organizations can redirect the locus of knowledge transfer internally by acting upon an individual employee's job design and socialization regime. This paper investigates the role of local knowledge specializations from universities in the artificial intelligence (AI) startup creation process. The empirical analysis is grounded in the Knowledge Spillovers Theory of Entrepreneurship. It provides evidence of the interplay between the presence of university knowledge specializations and the creation of AI startups located in Italian NUTS3 regions. More precisely, we analyze the mix of different types of university knowledge specializations able to foster the creation of AI startups, demonstrating that competencies in technological domains, such as computer science, need to be complemented with domains of applications for the emergence of AI technology. The findings indicate that the creation of AI startups is closely tied to the local knowledge present in the region. The article also proposes an empirical approach to identify and classify innovative startups operating in AI domains. Relying on high penetration and strong diffusion capabilities, the digital economy is becoming a new driving force for industrial integration and development. It is of great significance to promote the coordinated development of manufacturing and producer services. This paper took panel data on 286 prefecture-level cities and above in China from 2011 to 2019 as its research object, and used the two-way fixed effect model, threshold effect model, and the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) as its econometric testing methods. This analysis explored the impact of the digital economy on the synergetic agglomeration between manufacturing and productive service industries in China. The results of the research showed that the synergetic agglomeration of industries is significantly promoted by the digital economy. This conclusion was still valid after an endogeneity test was carried out. The digital economy's role was found to mainly involve promoting knowledge spillovers and expanding the market size. An in-depth analysis of the digital economy has enabled the collaborative agglomeration of manufacturing and producer services in large, medium-sized, and small cities. The digital economy had the greatest effect on small cities, followed by medium-sized cities and large cities. The synergetic aggregation between the manufacturing and high-end producer services industries is significantly promoted by the digital economy. However, it was not found to have had a significant effect on the synergetic agglomeration between the manufacturing and low-end producer services industries. The impact of the digital economy on industrial collaborative agglomeration is nonlinear. Only when the level of the digital economy exceeds the threshold can the promoting effect of the digital economy on industrial collaborative agglomeration be manifested. In summary, the development of the digital economy was found to have promoted industrial collaboration and agglomeration in the study areas and their neighboring regions in the study period. The research results of this article are of great significance for achieving the goal of the "two-wheel drive" of the manufacturing and producer services industries, as well as high-quality economic development in China. This study examines the impact of barriers to knowledge diffusion in energy technologies in 29 countries from 1990 to 2015, distinguishing between efficient fossil-based generation and mature renewable options, namely wind and solar. We show that knowledge flows are higher in countries with similar technological profiles, particularly for mature renewables. The study finds that international knowledge spillovers have increased in intensity for wind and solar, while the opposite is true for fossil-based technologies. That means that foreign knowledge has increasingly informed domestic investors and points to the key role that knowledge flows from abroad had in promoting innovation in low-carbon technology options. Integrated assessment models should account for the role international knowledge spillovers play in the generation of new knowledge and in contributing to rapid decrease in costs.

Advanced business services (ABS) are seen as generators and disseminators of innovation among their client companies, and their use by client companies can improve efficiency and productivity. However, one question that has not been addressed is whether ABS provision can be an explanatory factor for the total productivity of the factors (TPF). This paper aims to determine whether the innovation generated and/or transmitted by ABS companies is reflected in the TPF growth in the manufacturing sector. For this purpose, a Cobb-Douglas function was estimated using panel data analysis on data of ten OECD countries in the period 1977-1996. ABS labour was considered the proxy variable for the provision of these types of services and treated as a separate factor in the production process. The quantitative study shows that the contribution of labour endowment in ABS to the efficiency and productivity of manufacturing industry is significant, that it generates spillovers and that it is an explanatory factor for the TPF. The main goal of this paper is to empirically examine the effects of related and unrelated variety on per employee income in Polish NUTS 2 regions, and the resulting income inequality. The study is based on regional panel data for the 2003–2018 period using the GMM estimator system. The positive effect of related variety on per employee income and the negative effect of unrelated variety on per employee income are reported. Our simulation results show that regional income inequality could be reduced by promoting related variety in eastern regions of the country.

In this paper, we propose a model of national innovation production that formalizes the role of trade partnerships as a channel of knowledge spillovers across countries. The model is used to investigate the energy efficiency technological domain in the European Union (EU) using a panel database covering 19 EU countries for the time span 1990–2015. The model is estimated by using a novel empirical strategy which allows to assess the knowledge spillover effects benefiting a country depending on its relative position in the trade network, and correct for common endogeneity concerns. We show that being central in the trade network is a significant determinant of a country's innovative performance, and that learning-by-exporting mechanisms are responsible for increased innovation performances. We further reveal that neglecting network effects may significantly reduce our understanding of domestic innovation patterns. Finally, we find that the benefits obtained from knowledge diffusion varies with the domestic absorptive capacity and policy mix composition. Our main implication is that policy design informed by network-based case studies could help maximizing the exploitation of positive knowledge spillovers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to identify the significant role of HR practices in the knowledge spillover process that drives firm innovation and to ascertain doable HR- practices to accelerate this process. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Interviews were transcribed. For analysis, phenomenology is used as a research methodology to cater the essence of the phenomenon (knowledge spillover process) by studying HR-managers lived experiences. Findings validated through subjective saturated evidence of informants. The results based on data analysis revealed that frequent employee interactions, cooperative work environment and participative leadership are considered as the essence of knowledge spillovers. Another objective is fulfilled as Training and development and Employee relations are the two major HR practices that facilitate the knowledge spillover process effectively. This research benefits both academicians and practitioners. For educationist, it propounded a conceptual framework that supports in theory enhancement. For practitioners, effective implementation of HR practices can open new avenues of success for organizations.

The diffusion of knowledge is an essential triggering factor in the phase of economic growth through externalities mostly based on R&D and innovations embodied in technological products or services. As a form of transmission, knowledge spillovers arising from an external source can emerge through various channels. This study investigates the effect of knowledge spillovers via high-tech imports and international R&D cooperation on longrun economic growth, in a panel of selected emerging and developing economies for the 1995-2019 period. Based on the results of second-generation econometric methods that take into account cross-section dependence and parameter heterogeneity, it is concluded that knowledge spillovers via high-tech imports are a prominent determinant of economic growth. The results also confirm the growth-enhancing effect of domestic knowledge stock as a measure of knowledge absorption capacity. However, it is deduced that knowledge spillovers via R&D cooperation have a weak and somewhat insignificant positive impact on economic growth, when ignoring the complementary relationship between incoming knowledge and the absorptive capacity of countries. Accordingly, the results indicate the essential role of increasing absorptive capacity in gains from R&D spillovers. Lastly, human capital seems to be decisive in the growth process. Although prior research has highlighted the benefits that accrue to brokers in innovation networks, much less attention is devoted to understanding who benefits from associating with a broker. This study focuses on the impact of associating with a specific kind of broker—a core/periphery bridge—that is, one that spans central and peripheral actors. I argue that actors associated with a core/periphery bridge benefit more when they have no central connection, or are outsiders in the network, due to their greater need for sponsorship from the broker. I explore this idea in the context of the return migration of American-trained scientists to African institutions, who span the core and the periphery of the global scientific network. I evaluate the impact of their return on the publication outcomes of nonmigrant scientists based in African institutions and find that following the arrival of a returnee in their institution, the nonmigrants who are not already connected to scientists in top global institutions have a greater publication output through improved access to central knowledge and connections. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how brokers can influence innovation systems more broadly. This article sets out to investigate the relationship between the knowledge spillovers and the potential for high-value inventions to emerge. We study knowledge spillovers through the lens of knowledge networks: a web of interrelated knowledge elements with structural patterns. Knowledge spillovers influence the productivity of a technology sector and hence their pattern should impact the pathways for knowledge appropriation in the sector. It is hypothesized that a robust knowledge network is associated with knowledge appropriation leading to valuable inventions. We test the hypothesis using patent citation network of 1821 patents from 78 inventions belonging to two different technological sectors. Using a prefectural level data, we shed the light on the knowledge spillovers within three mega-economic zones (MEZs) in China by adopting spatial econometric methods. We first examine the spillovers within all regions, and then the spillovers within the MEZs, and finally the spillovers from core cities. The results show that there are pronounced spillovers between cities in China, which is stronger between cities with high techno-proximity. Moreover, spillovers within the MEZs are found to be stronger but unequal. Spillovers between cities in the Pearl River Delta are the greatest among the MEZs, while the spillovers within Jing-jin-ji are the lowest. Eventually, Shenzhen outperforms Shanghai and Beijing in knowledge spillovers, whereas Beijing may even adversely affect the innovation of neighbors.

Can dirty incumbents leverage their existing knowhow to transition to clean technologies? To address this question, we systematically measure direct and indirect knowledge spillovers between clean and dirty technologies using the patent citation network. We assume citations reflect pathways of learning and knowledge proximity. We first examine the proportion of citations in clean patents that directly refer to dirty technologies. Secondly, we investigate how clean and dirty technologies are indirectly linked in the citation network and which sectors most frequently bridge these two fields. We find that less than one-tenth of clean patents contain a direct citation to prior dirty patents, but nearly two-thirds are indirectly linked. Significant sectoral heterogeneity exists. Patents related to control technologies, data processing and optimization, and the management of heat and waste, frequently serve as bridges between clean and dirty technologies in the citation network. Our results have implications for: firm-level diversification strategies, green industrial policy, and the modelling of directed technical change, where lower knowledge spillovers between clean and dirty technologies correspond to higher path dependencies. • We present novel evidence on the extent to which clean technologies learn from prior dirty technologies. • We construct a new measure of indirect knowledge spillovers between clean and dirty sectors. • We systematically identify "bridge technologies" that connect clean and dirty sectors. • We highlight key implications for the transition from dirty to clean innovation. Technological diversification and specialization have important roles in explaining volatility, innovation, income inequality, exports, and related concerns; however, the relationships between transportation improvement and technological diversification and specialization remains unexplored. Using Chinese city-level panel data, we investigate the impact of China's high-speed rail (HSR) connection on technological diversity using the difference-in-differences method and instrumental variable regressions. The results demonstrate that HSR connection leads to reductions in technological diversity, particularly in core cities, cities along the four longest HSR lines, and cities that were initially diversified. The findings indicate that HSR connection is conducive to technological specialization rather than diversification, offering new insights for understanding the relationship between transportation improvement and innovation and determining that HSR connection spurs intra-industry knowledge spillovers more than inter-industry knowledge spillovers.

Since industrial development patterns in China are different across regions and sectors, this paper firstly estimates total factor productivity growth rate through two-stage-least-square method and then investigates the effect of agglomeration in city-industry productivity growth for 7 sectors located in 101 Chinese cities over period 2005-2013, with consideration of cross-regional effect such as knowledge spillovers between regions. Our results indicate there is no significant effect of agglomeration on city-industry TFP if the impact of cross-regional effect on agglomeration are taken into considerations. From spatial Durbin model (SDM), cross-regional effect significantly inhibits the city-industry TFP growth resulted from diversification.

The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship (KSTE) explores the effects that new knowledge and proximity have on the exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities and the resultant creation of start-ups. This paper aims to identify the types of knowledge spillovers that affect entrepreneurs in the early stages of start-up development. A conceptual model is proposed, using a multi-case study approach involving high-tech start-ups that have attended accelerator and incubator programs in Greater London, United Kingdom. The research involved 32 semistructured interviews with chief executive officers and cofounders of start-up companies. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurs are influenced by various forms of knowledge spillover which assist in determining the strategic decision of the company, in terms of formation, including partnerships or alliances, allocation of Research and Development budgets, and engagement in product innovation. Further observations confirm that high-tech start-ups focus on a fast pace of constant product innovation to cover identified gaps in the market. One significant finding is that start-ups use various technological platforms to access knowledge spillovers which challenge the ideas of geographical proximity present in existing KSTE understanding. The main sources of technological development are from abroad rather than domestic in many countries. The global networks for knowledge and technology flows are becoming sophisticated. This article examines how a country's embeddedness in the global knowledge spillover networks, particularly trade and FDI, is related to national innovation performance. Network closure and structural hole, the main arguments in network theory literature, represent the main objectives of our network analysis. The results are subsequently used to assess how these network characteristics are related to national innovation performance via panel negative binomial regression analysis. The findings show an overall tendency of a negative effect of network closure and a positive one of structural holes on a country's innovative outcome. In conclusion, this article not only highlights the significant role of network characteristics in national innovation performance, but also provides implications on how to leverage such network resources to improve national innovation systems. Green energy technology innovation (GETI) is a crucial path to achieve sustainable development. However, few studies have examined the determinants of GETI, especially from the perspective of environmental regulation. To fill this gap, this study investigates the impact of environmental regulation on GETI using the panel data of 30 provinces in Mainland China from 2001 to 2018. We first measure GETI by the latest IPC codes and patent data, and then adopt a dynamic spatial Durbin model (DSDM) to examine the relationship between environmental regulation and GETI. The main conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) There is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between environmental regulation and GETI; (2) heterogeneity analysis shows that the inverted U-shaped correlation not only exists between environmental regulations and different types of GETI, but also exists between environmental regulations and GETI in different regions. Moreover, the results also show that the spatial spillover effect and path-dependent effect exist in all cases. The findings can provide reference for policymakers to formulate more precise environmental policies. That is, environmental policies in a province should be formulated based on its position on the inverted U-shaped curve. More specifically, when it is on the left side of the inflection point, it is reasonable to strengthen environmental policies, and when it is on the right side of the inflection point, appropriate relaxation of environmental policies should be considered. This study has utilised the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) estimator method to explore the spillover effects of "technology" and "knowledge" from foreign direct investment (FDI) on Malaysian labour productivity. The study focus was on Malaysian mediumlow technology and low-technology industries from 2000 to 2018. The findings showed that the presence of FDI spillovers as diffusion channels that increased labour productivity were greater through "technology effects" compared to "learning effects" for both types of industries. A cross-comparison of the results on technological spillovers between investor countries revealed that Singaporean and Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) contributed the most significant technological effects in increasing Malaysian labour productivity, with the effects being most noticeable was in low-technology industries. These findings seem to suggest that the spillover effects of FDI are still concentrated in sectors with low-capacity technologies that commensurate with the required level of workforce capability. The negative relationship between "knowledge" spillovers and productivity found in this study seems to illustrate that the absorptive capacity of local workers to absorb high-skill-based technology from MNCs is still at a low level in both types of industries. This study has recommended that strategies and mechanisms should be devised accordingly to assist MNCs in their effort to improve knowledge and technology transfers, while simultaneously acknowledging the constraints of human factors, absorptive capacity, competition for resources or ethical dilemmas and cultural barriers. Many firms find it challenging to develop innovations, evidenced by the ever-mounting number of university-industry research alliances. This study examines the strategic choices of actors who participate in collaborative innovation alliances involving partnerships between industry and universities (U-I) based on a stochastic evolutionary game model. White noise was introduced to reflect uncertainty and the stochastic interferences caused by the differences between actors. Using the Itô stochastic differential equation theory, we analyze stability issues of player behaviors in the evolution of a collaborative innovation alliance. The results illustrate that improvements in innovation efficiency can contribute to U-I collaborative innovation alliances. High knowledge complementarity appears to be unbeneficial to the stability of these alliances, and controlling knowledge spillovers may suppress free-rider problems from both sides of the game. Due to the spatial embeddedness and stickiness of knowledge, most investigations mainly pay attention to the localized nature of KS, but what about those spillovers from other jurisdictions, or perhaps even from across the globe? To analyse the role played by international KS, the present study investigates to what extent international KS shape the evolution of the UK science and technology space. The first step involves creating knowledge spaces following the methodology outlined by Kogler et al. (2013; 2017) for the period 2006–15. Subsequently, we are following the paper trail of publications and patents developed by UK authors and inventors to depict to what degree international KS in specific science and technology domains have contributed to the production of novel knowledge in the UK. The results indicate that four out of five citations made in publications and patents in the UK are the works of authors and inventors residing elsewhere. This has important policy implications considering recent tendencies to curtail trade and the free movement of labour, all of which contribute to the diffusion of knowledge.

International theoretical and empirical studies have shown that regional development and economic growth largely depend on spatial and non-spatial proximity of regions, which generates knowledge spillovers. We developed a methodological approach to measuring and visualising spatial and structural-technological proximity affecting regional knowledge spillovers. Moreover, we tested the techniques of the cartographic visualisation of the proximity of Russian regions. Further, we analysed foreign and domestic approaches to studying spatial and non-spatial proximity and obtained new results. We described the stages constituting a methodology for the quantitative assessment of different types of regional proximity. Additionally, we proposed a method for constructing a typology of regions based on the coefficients of the non-spatial proximity matrix, calculated according to the indicator “gross value added” for 15 sectors of the Russian National Classifier of Economic Activities (OKVED) for Russian regions. Using the data for the Novosibirsk region in 2005 and 2016, we applied methodological techniques for measuring and visualising geographical and structural-technological proximity (STB) of a region in relation to other constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The Novosibirsk region is located in the middle of the country and has a diversified structure of economic activities and science. For this particular region, there has been an increase in the likelihood of the emergence of knowledge spillover channels with various European regions of Russia and some regions of the Urals and the Far East. Proximity matrices can be used in econometric studies to test hypotheses about the impact of different forms of proximity on regional economic growth. Recommendations to enhance knowledge spillover coincide with the proposals to support the areas of innovative development stated in The Strategy of Spatial Development of the Russian Federation for the period until 2025.

Open innovation, in the form of inbound and outbound open innovation, is an ever-increasing research field. Research into outbound open innovation (i.e., the inside-out process) focused mostly on the commercialisation of internal knowledge. However, we know very little about firms' voluntary nonpecuniary knowledge disclosure. This paper sheds light on this understudied research field by conducting a quantitative study that identifies which internal and external conditions foster firms' knowledge disclosures. The results show that firms' strategies to influence (i) the market and the competition and (ii) external spillovers are drivers of firms' knowledge disclosures. Further, the moderating roles of environmental characteristics are shown. Firms' environmental technological dynamism is found to strengthen the positive relationships between influencing external spillovers and knowledge disclosure. In contrast, the relationships between influencing the market and the competition and knowledge disclosure are negatively moderated by a firm's environmental technological dynamism. Trade openness is commonly viewed as one of the engines of economic growth. Hence, it is not surprising that several countries have taken measures to ensure that their industrial and trade policies permit some form of trade openness. This study analyses the relationship between trade openness and economic growth, highlighting some of the controversies on the effects of trade openness. From the existing literature, it is evident that the effects of trade openness are not always positive and significant, hence a closer investigation of the relationship between trade openness and economic growth is vital. Based on the findings, this paper recommends that policy makes must first address the enabling factors to ensure significant positive benefits from trade openness. This implies that countries must prioritise the aligning of their trade and industrial policies with trade facilitation, financial development, industrialisation, technological advancement and infrastructural development.

We examine whether establishing a new university (or faculty) in a region affects new firm creation within that given region. We identified a quasi-experimental design based on Spain’s 1983 University Reform Act, which opened the door to founding new universities at the regional level. We use a generalized difference-in-difference model to estimate this relationship. The results indicate that establishing a new university has a significant positive effect on new firm creation. We then introduce an analysis by the field of knowledge of the created university/faculty and the creation of firms in different categories of sectors defined according to their research and development intensity. In this case, the results show that creating a new university/faculty has a significant positive effect on firm formation in medium-high- and medium-low-technology manufacturing as well as in knowledge-intensive market and financial services. Moreover, creating a health faculty has a significant positive effect on new firm formation in the high-tech manufacturing sector. Finally, the results indicate ambiguous results from different sources of agglomeration economies.

Research background: Total factor productivity (TFP) determines how efficiently and intensely the available inputs are used and combined in production process. Improvement of TFP performance requires identification of its determinants, thus enabling policy actions to focus on them. Since the ability to create and absorb innovation is considered as a crucial factor of economic development, the investigation of the impact of the level of regional innovative performance on TFP distribution across EU regions is an important research problem. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we attempt to develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the impact of innovation on TFP. Secondly, we assess TFP levels for regions in the EU and investigate whether innovations account for the observed regional disparities in TFP. Methods: The research sample consists of 202 European Union (EU) regions at NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 level from 22 countries. The regional data on GDP, employment and gross fixed capital formation come from the Eurostat. The source of data on the level of innovativeness of European regions is the Regional Innovation Scoreboard. To calculate TFP, we use the multiplicatively-complete Färe-Primont index. In turn, to examine the impact of innovation on TFP, we employ the spatially-lagged X model. Findings & Value added: Our findings show a high degree of dispersion in TFP across EU regions. We find a positive impact of regional innovation performance on TFP. Although theoretical papers on economic development and regional economics suggest that improvements in TFP are key to regional economic performance, and that innovations are crucial to gain such productivity effects, there is a dearth of empirical studies on the link between innovation and TFP at the regional level. Therefore, our paper attempts to fill this gap by providing the evidence of positive effect of innovation externalities on TFP in European regions.

Two fundamental properties of knowledge underlie the model: First, it is often necessary to reveal some knowledge to demonstrate its value. Second, knowledge is freely reproducible. Larger cities generate more meetings between experts and entrepreneurs, resulting in more learning and better matches. Larger cities also foster competition for jobs, which motivates experts to raise their knowledge bids. These results demonstrate how competitive behavior can be a source of agglomeration economies, and contribute to explain the higher productivity of urban workers.
