Environmental contamination by chromium represents a serious public health problem. Therefore, it is crucial to develop and optimize remediation technologies to reduce its concentration in the environment. The aims of this study were to evaluate the uptake of chromium by live and complete microbial mats in experimental mesocosms under different pH and salinity conditions to understand how these factors affect the microphytobenthic community and, consequently, how chromium removal process is influenced. Microbial mats from the estuarine environment were exposed to 15 mg Cr/L under different pH (2, 4, and 8) and salinity (2, 15, and 33) conditions. Salinity, redox potential, and pH were measured throughout the trial in solutions and in microbial mats, while total Cr determinations were performed at the end of the assay. The results demonstrated that the removal efficiency of Cr by microbial mats was significantly improved in solutions at pH 2, remaining unaffected by variations in salinity. Notably, both cyanobacteria and diatoms showed remarkable resistance to Cr exposure under all conditions tested, highlighting their exceptional adaptability. In 2011, Texas experienced record heat and drought that escalated concerns about environmental flows for rivers. In response to these worries, fishes and water quality were sampled in the Lower Neches River, Texas, from May-August 2012 during continued drought. Potential effects of hydrology on environmental parameters and assemblages of small (seine samples) and large (gillnet samples) fishes were evaluated at multiple locations. Approximately 1 km downstream from the saltwater barrier, paper mill effluent discharges into the river. Salinity was higher and dissolved oxygen lower below the saltwater barrier during low-flow intervals. Fish species richness in seine samples, was higher when the barrier was open, and species richness for both gear types was lowest at sites closest to the paper mill effluent discharge. Overall, species richness was higher at sites below the barrier, with more estuarine and marine species present. When the barrier was closed, richness and abundance of sensitive freshwater species were lower below the barrier. Closure of the barrier during drought results in accumulation of dissolved organic compounds from paper mill effluent and lower dissolved oxygen in the reach below the barrier. To sustain biodiversity in the system, subsistence flows must pass across the saltwater barrier during droughts.

Along with sea-level rise, one of the most detrimental effects of climate change, is salinity leakage, which significantly affects agricultural activities throughout most of the world. This occurrence is becoming increasingly dangerous. The purpose of this study was to use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to assess the current situation of agricultural lands in the province of Al-Diwaniyah, by employing GIS to document the salt-affected sites and arrive at the most important criteria affecting those lands as well as build an application model for suitability to clarify the affected sites and come up with paper and digital maps. To accomplish this, the study relied on the available data by extrapolating and analyzing remote sensing images using salt equations to analyze the Landsat 8 satellite images, after which these data were subjected to spatial statistical treatment in ArcGIS software. Moreover, 20 samples were taken from ground sampling points and subjected to laboratory analysis to compare and document the results. The research resulted in the creation of an up-to-date database for the locations of salt ratio growth or decrease in the province of Al-Diwaniyah, which can be relied on, starting from and expanding in the future. Land maps, both paper and digital, have been created and can be used and inferred. The findings demonstrated the model's ability to steadily discriminate among all salinity groups while maintaining consistency with the ground truth data. Each of the four major salinity categories was highlighted. The best-performing indicators were used to build the MLR model, which was then used to anticipate soil salinity. The salt levels may be determined by the MLR combining NDVI and SI-5 with a high correlation value (R2 = 75.29%). Finally, it is shown that by combining spectral indicators with field measurements, it is possible to chart and forecast soil salinity on a large scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater resources are increasingly under demand to support human activities and economic development. This naturally clean resource is threatened by human and natural pollutions. Protecting groundwater has become a challenge for both urban and rural communities. This work aims to develop a simple and effective approach to assess the risk of aquifer pollution and the delineation of risk zones. To do so, an aquifer risk index (ARI) was presented as an overall indicator of the risk of groundwater pollution. The ARI is calculated using the groundwater vulnerability index (GVI) and the normalized water quality index (WQI). The multi-linear regression (MLR) model was used to assign weights to each parameter. This model has been applied and validated in the Koutine area of southern Tunisia. The results revealed that the groundwater in the study area is characterized by low and moderate risk. Fifty-six percent (56%) of the total study area presents a low risk. The remaining 44% of the study area is classified as medium risk, primarily in the Wadi and Lowland plains. ARI considers the intrinsic characteristics of the aquifer and groundwater quality when assessing the risk of pollution. The approach developed for assessing groundwater risks is simple to implement, realistic, and efficient. AVI is a parametric approach that uses aquifer data without losing information. Roots have important roles for plants to withstand adverse environmental conditions, including salt stress. Biostimulant application was shown to enhance plant resilience towards abiotic stresses. Here, we studied the effect of a tannin-based biostimulant on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) grown under salt stress conditions. We investigated the related changes at both root architecture (via imaging and biometric analysis) and gene expression (RNA-Seq/qPCR) levels. Moreover, in order to identify the main compounds potentially involved in the observed effects, the chemical composition of the biostimulant was evaluated by UV/Vis and HPLC-ESI-Orbitrap analysis. Sixteen compounds, known to be involved in root development and having a potential antioxidant properties were identified. Significant increase of root weight (+ 24%) and length (+ 23%) was observed when the plants were grown under salt stress and treated with the biostimulant. Moreover, transcriptome analysis revealed that the application of the biostimulant upregulated 285 genes, most of which correlated to root development and salt stress tolerance. The 171 downregulated genes were mainly involved in nutrient uptake. These data demonstrated that the biostimulant is able not only to restore root growth in salty soils, but also to provide the adequate plant nourishment by regulating the expression of essential transcription factors and stress responsive genes.

Salinity is a crucial environmental problem leading to profound consequences in wetland plants and aquatic habitats including the rapid development of Phragmites australis in the marshland. These Phragmites australis are extremely vulnerable to capture fire, which might eventually affect the overall ecosystem of the marsh. However, in order to restore the marsh, a hydrologic investigation is needed, which is possible if a watershed is gauged, and long-term data are available. In this study, a systematic approach has been presented to conduct hydrologic modeling and salinity prediction in an ungauged watershed in order to implement the possible removal of salt fill sites. The stage and electrical conductivity were measured continuously, whereas stream cross sections and velocity of the streamflow were recorded intermittently in the Blackbrook Creek to develop a rating curve and generate continuous streamflow data. The watershed model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was calibrated and validated to a monthly scale with good model performance. In the next step, critical sources of salinity were identified from the two tributaries in order to implement the removal of salt fill sites for the possible reduction of salinity in the marsh. While salinity loading was approximately 10 times higher from Marsh Creek (65.63 tons to 2028.13 tons per month) compared with Blackbrook Creek (10.23 tons to 163.98 per month), the analysis suggested that salinity concentration was higher from Blackbrook Creek, which was particularly due to abandoned salt fill sites near the Creek. The salinity loadings were linearly correlated with streamflow on a monthly (R 2  = 0.81) scale, which was utilized to generate the salinity loadings that were diverted due to the rerouting of the Creek through the new location in order to avoid salt fill sites and reduce salinity in the Mentor Marsh. Our analysis suggested that approximately 74 kg/day salinity was being rerouted from the Marsh; however, the salt fill sites contribute salinity to the Marsh equivalent to 63 kg/day, which still needs to be removed. The research findings are expected to be helpful for monitoring small ungauged watersheds.

A compilation of several cruises data from 1998 to 2013 was used to derive polynomial fits that estimate total alkalinity (AT) and total inorganic carbon (CT) from measurements of salinity and temperature in the Mediterranean Sea surface waters. The optimal equations were chosen based on the 10-fold cross validation results and revealed that a second and third order polynomials fit the AT and CT data respectively. The AT surface fit showed an improved root mean square error (RMSE) of ±10.6 μmol kg-1. Furthermore we present the first annual mean CT parameterization for the Mediterranean Sea surface waters with a RMSE of ±14.3 μmol kg-1. Excluding the marginal seas of the Adriatic and the Aegean, these equations can be used to estimate AT and CT in case of the lack of measurements. The seven years averages (2005-2012) mapped using the quarter degree climatologies of the World Ocean Atlas 2013 showed that in surface waters AT and CT have similar patterns with an increasing eastward gradient. The surface variability is influenced by the inflow of cold Atlantic waters through the Strait of Gibraltar and by the oligotrophic and thermohaline gradient that characterize the Mediterranean Sea. The summer-winter seasonality was also mapped and showed different patterns for AT and CT. During the winter, the AT and CT concentrations were higher in the western than in the eastern basin, primarily due to the deepening of the mixed layer and upwelling of dense waters. The opposite was observed in the summer where the eastern basin was marked by higher AT and CT concentrations than in winter. The strong evaporation that takes place in this season along with the ultra-oligotrophy of the eastern basin determines the increase of both AT and CT concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aiming at the problem of long soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) testing times and the difficulty of prediction accuracy in complex environments, this paper establishes a SWCC prediction model based on a neural network machine learning algorithm which can take into account the influence of multiple factors such as temperature, deformation, and salinity. The input layer of the model can reflect the physical properties of the soil and the influence of the external environment, while the suction is taken as an input variable, which in turn can directly obtain the water content under the corresponding conditions. The predictive ability of the model is verified by comparing and analyzing the predicted results of the SWCC under different temperature, void ratio, and salinity conditions with the experimental results. The research in this paper provides a new method for predicting the SWCC considering multiple factors, and the prediction accuracy of the model is related to the amount of experimental data. The thickness of the thin wetting film depends on disjoining pressure forces, and it evolves with pH evolution due to brine acidification at the physical and chemical conditions of geological carbon dioxide storage becoming thinner in response to dewetting. In the literature, molecular dynamic simulation (MDS) studies have been employed to understand the effect of pressure/capillary pressure on the thin wetting film evolution. In this paper, a theoretical approach based on the Frumkin–Derjaguin Equation (FDE), models of electric double layer repulsion, and van der Waals forces have been used for the calculation of the wetting film thickness. The approach excluded hydration forces contribution to disjoining pressure forces due partly to its poorly understood nature, and partly to the high salinity conditions encountered in geological carbon storage. Due to its promising global storage capacity compared to other lithologies, the carbon dioxide–brine–silica systems was chosen to simulate sandstone saline aquifers. The validation of the model benefited much from literature resources on data and a universal model of carbon dioxide–brine interfacial tension. Calculated results confirm pH-induced dewetting and they follow trends controlled by pH and pressure as found in the literature. The novelty of the paper can be seen from the fact that it has demonstrated a theoretical supplement to MDS studies in addition to justifying the fundamental utility and versatility of the FDE. Moreover, the paper links for the first time, a transcendental equation to the thin wetting film theory encountered in the carbon dioxide–solid–brine system found in geological carbon storage. Currently, China's river water quality evaluation adopts the "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water", while the seawater quality evaluation uses the "Seawater Quality Standard". However, estuarine areas, where rivers meet the sea, do not have evaluation standards, and most often, the "Seawater Quality Standard" is applied. At present, the water quality in the estuary area sometimes exceeds the corresponding seawater quality standards, even though the quality of the surface water does not exceed surface water environmental quality standards and the quality of the seawater before mixing also meets the seawater quality standards. This paper proposes a dynamic evaluation standard based on the salinity of estuarine water and uses this standard to evaluate the water quality in estuaries, thus solving the abovementioned issue. The implementation of this method is simple and effective. Taking the Pearl River Estuary as an example, this paper introduces the dynamic standard evaluation method for water quality in the Pearl River Estuary. Compared to the existing seawater quality standards implemented in estuaries, this dynamic evaluation standard can assess the water quality in estuaries more accurately and provide a reference for water quality evaluation methods in estuaries. Freshwater salinization is an escalating global environmental issue that threatens freshwater biodiversity, including fish populations. This study aims to uncover the molecular basis of salinity physiological responses in a non-native minnow species (Phoxinus septimaniae x P. dragarum) exposed to saline effluents from potash mines in the Llobregat River, Barcelona, Spain. Employing high-throughput mRNA sequencing and differential gene expression analyses, brain, gills, and liver tissues collected from fish at two stations (upstream and downstream of saline effluent discharge) were examined. Salinization markedly influenced global gene expression profiles, with the brain exhibiting the most differentially expressed genes, emphasizing its unique sensitivity to salinity fluctuations. Pathway analyses revealed the expected enrichment of ion transport and osmoregulation pathways across all tissues. Furthermore, tissue-specific pathways associated with stress, reproduction, growth, immune responses, methylation, and neurological development were identified in the context of salinization. Rigorous validation of RNA-seq data through quantitative PCR (qPCR) underscored the robustness and consistency of our findings across platforms. This investigation unveils intricate molecular mechanisms steering salinity physiological response in non-native minnows confronting diverse environmental stressors. Specific mechanisms of precipitation change due to global climate variability on plant communities in coastal salt marsh ecosystems remain unknown. Hence, a field manipulative precipitation experiment was established in 2014 and 5 years of field surveys of vegetation from 2017 to 2021 to explore the effects of precipitation changes on plant community composition. The results showed that changes in plant community composition were driven by dominant species, and that the dominance of key species changed significantly with precipitation gradient and time, and that these changes ultimately altered plant community traits (i.e., community density, height, and species richness). Community height increased but community density decreased with more precipitation averaged five years. Furthermore, changes in precipitation altered dominant species composition and functional groups mainly by influencing soil salinity. Salinity stress caused by decreased precipitation shifted species composition from a dominance of taller perennials and grasses to dwarf annuals and forbs, while the species richness decreased. Conversely, soil desalination caused by increased precipitation increased species richness, especially increasing in the dominance of grasses and perennials. Specifically, Apocynaceae became dominance from rare while Amaranthaceae decreased in response to increased precipitation, but Poaceae was always in a position of dominance. Meanwhile, the dominance of grasses and perennials has the cumulative effect of years and their proportion increased under the increased 60% of ambient precipitation throughout the years. However, the annual forb Suaeda glauca was gradually losing its dominance or even becoming extinct over years. Our study highlights that the differences in plant salinity tolerance are key to the effects of precipitation changes on plant communities in coastal salt marsh. The saline wastewater produced in industrial activities and seawater use would flow into wastewater treatment plants and affect the characteristic of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of activated sludge, which could potentially impact the removal of antibiotics via adsorption. Nonetheless, the effect of salinity on trimethoprim adsorption by activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances at trace concentration and the underlying mechanism remain largely unknown. In this study, the effect of salinity on the adsorption removal of a typical antibiotic, i.e., trimethoprim (TMP) at trace concentration (25.0 μg/L) was evaluated. The results showed the content of EPS was decreased significantly from 56.36 to 21.70 mg/g VSS when the salinity was increased from 0 to 10 g/L. Protein fractions occupied the predominant component of EPS, whose concentration was decreased from 38.17 to 12.83 mg/g VSS. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of activated sludge for TMP was decreased by 49.70% (from 4.97 to 2.50 μg/g VSS). The fluorescence quenching results indicated the fluorescence intensity of tryptophan-like substances was decreased by 30% and the adsorption sites of EPS were decreased from 0.51 to 0.21 when the salinity was increased. The infrared spectrum and XPS results showed that the nitrogen-containing groups from protein were decreased significantly. Microplastics pollution and salinity intrusion in freshwater ecosystem is one of the worldwide climate change consequences those have negative impacts on the physiology of aquatic organisms. Hence, a 15-day experiment was carried out where Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was exposed to different salinity gradients i.e. 0 ‰, 3 ‰, 6 ‰, 9 ‰, and 12 ‰ alone and along with 10 mg/L polyamide microplastics (PA-MP) in order to measure its effects on the hematology, gill, and intestinal morphology. The results exhibited that all the fish treated with PA-MP ingested microplastics and the quantity of accumulation was significantly greater in higher salinity gradients (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). In addition, the PA-MP treated fish showed increased glucose level and at the same time reduced hemoglobin concentration with the increase of salinity. The percentages of abnormalities in erythrocytes both cellular (twin, teardrop and spindle shaped) and nuclear (notched nuclei, nuclear bridge and karyopyknosis) significantly enhanced with PA-MP exposure again in higher salinity treatments (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). The principal component analysis (PCA) exhibited that the addition of 10 mg/L PA-MP negatively affected the hematology of Nile tilapia than that of salinity treatments alone. Besides, the exposure of PA-MP in 9 ‰ and 12 ‰ salinity gradients escalated the severity of histological damages in gills and intestine. Salinization is a severe threat to agriculture and the environment in many areas, and the same in Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, Northwestern China. Microorganisms have an important influence on regulating the biochemical cycles of ecosystems; however, systematic research exploring microbial diversity and interactions with saline-soil ecosystems' environmental variables remains scarce. Thus, 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was performed in this paper to characterize microbial diversity under different levels of salinized soils: non-salinized (NS, 2.25 g/L), moderately salinized (MS, 6.14 g/L) and highly salinized (HS, 9.82 g/L). The alpha diversity results showed that the HS soil was significantly different from the NS and MS soils. An analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) and a principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that NS and MS clustered closely while HS separated from the other two. Significant differences in microbial composition were observed at the taxonomic level. Proteobacteria (42.29-79.23 %) were the most abundant phyla in the studied soils. Gammaproteobacteria (52.49 and 66.61 %) had higher abundance in the MS and HS soils at the class level; Methylophaga and Pseudomonas were the predominant bacteria in the HS soil; and Azotobacter and Methylobacillus were abundant in the MS soil. Most genera belonging to Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were detected via a linear discriminate analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) analysis, which indicated that microbes with the ability to degrade organic matter and accomplish nutrient cycling can be well-adapted to salt conditions. Further analyses (redundancy analysis and Mantel test) showed that the microbial communities were mainly related to the soil salinity, electrical conductivity (EC 1:5 ), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N). Overall, the findings of the study can provide insights for better understanding the dominant indigenous microbes and their roles in biochemical cycles in different saline soils in the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. Constructed wetlands use vegetation and microorganisms to remove contaminants like nitrogen and phosphorus from water. For mariculture, the impact of salinity on the efficiency of wastewater treatment of wetlands is unneglectable. However, little is known about their impact on the microbiome in constructed wetlands. Here, we set four salinity levels (15, 22, 29, and 36) in Salicornia constructed wetlands, and the experiment was conducted for a period of 72 days. The 15 group exhibited the highest removal rates of nitrogen compounds and phosphate, compared to the other salinity groups, the nosZ gene exhibited significantly higher expression in the 22 group (p < 0.05), indicated that microorganisms in 22 salinity have higher denitrification abilities. The three dominant phyla identified within the microbiomes were Proteobacteria, known for their diverse metabolic capabilities; Cyanobacteria, important for photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation; and Firmicutes, which include many fermenters. The ecological network analysis revealed a 'small world' model, characterized by high interconnectivity and short path lengths between microbial species, and had higher co-occurrence (45.13%) observed in this study comparing to the Erdös-Réyni random one (32.35%). The genus Microbulbifer emerged as the sole connector taxon, pivotal for integrating different microbial communities involved in nitrogen removal. A negative correlation was observed between salinity levels and network complexity, as assessed by the number of connections and diversity of interactions within the microbial community. Precise prediction of soil salinity using visible, and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy is crucial for ensuring food security and effective environmental management. This paper focuses on the precise prediction of soil salinity utilizing visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy, a critical factor for food security and effective environmental management. The objective is to utilize vis-NIR spectra alongside a multiple regression model (MLR) and a random forest (RF) modeling approach to predict soil salinity across various land use types, such as farmlands, bare lands, and rangelands accurately. To this end, we selected 150 sampling points representatives of these diverse land uses. At each point, we collected soil samples to measure the soil salinity (ECe) and employed a portable spectrometer to capture the spectral reflectance across the full wavelength range of 400 to 2400 nm. The methodology involved using both individual spectral reflectance values and combinations of reflectance values from different wavelengths as input variables for developing the MLR and RF models. The biodegradation of guar gum by microorganisms sourced from coalbeds can result in low-temperature gel breaking, thereby reducing reservoir damage. However, limited attention has been given to the influence of salinity on the synergistic biodegradation of coal and guar gum. In this study, biodegradation experiments of guar gum and lignite were conducted under varying salinity conditions. The primary objective was to investigate the controlling effects and mechanisms of salinity on the synergistic biodegradation of lignite and guar gum. The findings revealed that salinity had an inhibitory effect on the biomethane production from the co-degradation of lignite and guar gum. The biomethane production declined with increasing salinity levels, decreasing from 120.9 mL to 47.3 mL. Even under 20 g/L salt stress conditions, bacteria in coalbeds could effectively break the gel and the viscosity decreased to levels below 5 mPa s. As salinity increased, the removal rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) decreased from 55.63% to 31.17%, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulated in the digestion system. High salt environment reduces the intensity of each fluorescence peak. Alterations in salinity led to changes in microbial community structure and diversity. Under salt stress, there was an increased relative abundance of Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium, ensuring the continuity of anaerobic digestion. Hydrogentrophic methanogens exhibited higher salt tolerance compared to acetoclastic methanogens. Plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems is increasing and plastic particles may adsorb and transport a diverse array of contaminants, thereby increasing their bioavailability to biota. This investigation aimed to evaluate the effects of varying polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) and naphthalene (NAPH) concentrations on the survival and feeding rates of the model organism, Artemia salina, as well as NAPH adsorption to microplastics at different salinity levels (17, 75, 35.5 and 52.75 g L -1 ) under selected climate change scenarios. Survival (48 h) and feeding rates (6 h) of A. salina were also monitored, revealing that the presence of higher PE and NAPH concentrations lead to decreased survival rates while also increasing the number and size of microplastic particles in the saline solutions. Higher PE concentrations negatively affected A. salina feeding rates and NAPH concentrations were positively correlated with particle number and size, as well as with NAPH and PE adsorption rates in solution. Our findings demonstrate that the co-occurrence of microplastics and NAPH in aquatic environments can result in detrimental zooplankton survival and feeding rate effects. To explore the intrinsic influence of different salinity content on aniline biodegradation system in high temperature condition of 35 ± 1 °C, six groups at various salinity concentration (0.0%-5.0%) were applied. The results showed that the salinity exerted insignificant impact on aniline removal performance. The low-level salinity (0.5%-1.5%) stimulated the nitrogen metabolism performance. The G5-2.5% had excellent adaptability to salinity while the nitrogen removal capacity of G6-5.0% was almost lost. Moreover, high throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the g&#95;&#95;norank&#95;f&#95;&#95;NS9&#95;marine&#95;group, g&#95;&#95;Thauera and g&#95;&#95;unclassified&#95;f&#95;&#95;Rhodobacteraceae proliferated wildly and established positive correlation each other in low salinity systems. The g&#95;&#95;SM1A02 occupying the dominant position in G5 ensured the nitrification performance. In contrast, the Rhodococcus possessing great survival advantage in tremendous osmotic pressure competed with most functional genus, triggering the collapse of nitrogen metabolism capacity in G6. The dynamics of hydrographic and biogeochemical properties in a Northwestern coastal area of the Adriatic Sea were investigated. The time series data from continuous observation (2007-2022) allowed the investigation of annual trends and seasonal cycles along a coastal transect influenced by local river discharge. Various statistical models were used to investigate water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, dissolved organic, inorganic and particulate nutrients, precipitation and river discharge. It was found that the local river discharge regime played an essential role in interannual, and seasonal biogeochemical dynamics associated with global climate change in the Mediterranean region. A significant trend towards oligotrophic conditions was detected, as evidenced by the downward trend in the river mouth and on the sea of chlorophyll a (-0.2 μg L -1 in the sea), dissolved organic and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus (i.e., -0.43 μM yr -1 of DON in the sea and -6.67 of DIN μM yr -1 in the river mouth or -0.07 μM yr -1 of DOP and -0.02 μM yr -1 of DIP in the river mouth) and silicate (-2.47 μM yr -1 in the river mouth) concentrations. Salinity showed a long-term increase in the sea (0.08 yr -1 ), corresponding to a significant decrease in water discharge from the local river (-0.27 m 3  s -1 yr -1 ) and precipitation (-0.06 mm yr -1 ). The dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients highlighted a different seasonal accumulation under the river runoff regime. The nutrient enrichment was predominantly driven by river contribution. Soil salinization and sodification, the primary causes of land degradation and desertification in arid and semi-arid regions, demand effective monitoring for sustainable land management. This study explores the utility of partial least square (PLS) latent variables (LVs) derived from visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, combined with remote sensing (RS) and auxiliary variables, to predict electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) in northern Xinjiang, China. Using 90 soil samples from the Karamay district, machine learning models (Random Forest, Support Vector Regression, Cubist) were tested in four scenarios. Modeling results showed that RS and Land use alone were unreliable predictors, but the addition of topographic attributes significantly improved the prediction accuracy for both EC and SAR. The incorporation of PLS LVs derived from Vis-NIR spectroscopy led to the highest performance by the Random Forest model for EC (CCC = 0.83, R 2  = 0.80, nRMSE = 0.48, RPD = 2.12) and SAR (CCC = 0.78, R 2  = 0.74, nRMSE = 0.58, RPD = 2.25). The variable importance analysis identified PLS LVs, certain topographic attributes (e.g., valley depth, elevation, channel network base level, diffuse insolation), and specific RS data (i.e., polarization index of VV + VH) as the most influential predictors in the study area. This study affirms the efficiency of Vis-NIR data for digital soil mapping, offering a cost-effective solution. In conclusion, the integration of proximal soil sensing techniques and highly relevant topographic attributes with the RF model has the potential to yield a reliable spatial model for mapping soil EC and SAR. Tidal wetlands play a critical role in emitting greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere; our understanding of the intricate interplay between natural processes and human activities shaping their biogeochemistry and GHG emissions remains lacking. In this study, we delve into the spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of the GHG emissions from five tidal wetlands in the Scheldt Estuary by focusing on the interactive impacts of salinity and water pollution, two factors exhibiting contrasting gradients in this estuarine system: pollution escalates as salinity declines. Our findings reveal a marked escalation in GHG emissions when moving upstream, primarily attributed to increased concentrations of organic matter and nutrients, coupled with reduced levels of dissolved oxygen and pH. These low water quality conditions not only promote methanogenesis and denitrification to produce CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively, but also shift the carbonate equilibria towards releasing more CO 2 . As a result, the most upstream freshwater wetland was the largest GHG emitter with a global warming potential around 35 to 70 times higher than the other wetlands. When moving seaward along a gradient of decreasing urbanization and increasing salinity, wetlands become less polluted and are characterized by lower concentrations of NO 3 , TN and TOC, which induces stronger negative impact of elevated salinity on the GHG emissions from the saline wetlands. Consequently, these meso-to polyhaline wetlands released considerably smaller amounts of GHGs. Global climate change as well as human activities have been reported to increase the frequency and severity of both salinization and harmful algal blooms (HABs) in many freshwater systems, but their co-effect on benthic invertebrates has rarely been studied. This study simultaneously examined the joint toxicity of salinity and different cyanobacterial diets on the behavior, development, select biomarkers, and partial life cycle of Chironomus pallidivittatus (Diptera). High concentrations of salts (e.g., 1 g/L Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) and toxic Microcystis had synergistic toxicity, inhibiting development, burrowing ability and causing high mortality of C. pallidivittatus, especially for the Mg 2+ treatment, which caused around 90% death. Low Ca 2+ concentration (e.g., 0.01 g/L) promoted larval burrowing ability and inhibited toxin accumulation, which increased the tolerance of Chironomus to toxic Microcystis. However, low Mg 2+ concentration (e.g., 0.01 g/L) was shown to inhibit the behavior, development and increase algal toxicity to Chironomus. Toxic Microcystis resulted in microcystin (MC) accumulation, inhibited the burrowing ability of larvae, and increased the proportion of male adults (>50%). The combined toxicity level from low to high was verified by the weight of evidence and the grey TOPSIS model, which integrated five lines of evidence to increase the risk assessment accuracy and efficiency. This is the first study that provided insights into ecological risk arising from the joint effect of salinity and harmful algae on benthic organisms. Ammonia removal by nitrifiers at the extremely high salinity poses a great challenge for saline wastewater treatment. Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was conducted with a stepwise increase of salinity from 10 to 40 g-NaCl·L -1 , while sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) with one-step salinity enhancement, their nitrification performance, microbial structure and interaction were evaluated. Both SBR and SBBR can achieve high-efficiency nitrification (98% ammonia removal) at 40 g-NaCl·L -1 . However, SBBR showed more stable nitrification performance than SBR at 40 g-NaCl·L -1 after a shorter adaptation period of 4-15 d compared to previous studies. High-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the abundance and capability of conventional ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas) were suppressed in SBBR relative to SBR. Gelidibacter, Anaerolineales were the predominant genus in SBBR, which were not found in SBR. NorB and nosZ responsible for reducing NO to N 2 O and reducing N 2 O to N 2 respectively had s strong synergistic effect in SBBR. The key to the resource recycling of saline wastes in form of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) is to enrich mixed cultures with salt tolerance and PHA synthesis ability. However, the comparison of saline sludge from different sources and the salt tolerance mechanisms of salt-tolerant PHA producers need to be clarified. In this study, three kinds of activated sludge from different salinity environments were selected as the inoculum to enrich salt-tolerant PHA producers under aerobic dynamic feeding (ADF) mode with butyric acid dominated mixed volatile fatty acid as the substrate. The maximum PHA content (PHAm) reached 0.62 ± 0.01, 0.62 ± 0.02, and 0.55 ± 0.03 g PHA/g VSS at salinity of 0.5%, 0.8%, and 1.8%, respectively. Microbial community analysis indicated that Thauera, Paracoccus, and Prosthecobacter were dominant salt-tolerant PHA producers at low salinity, Thauera, NS9&#95;marine, and SM1A02 were dominant salt-tolerant PHA producers at high salinity. High salinity and ADF mode had synergistic effects on selection and enrichment of salt-tolerant PHA producers. Combined correlation network with redundancy analysis indicated that trehalose synthesis genes and betaine related genes had positive correlation with PHAm, while extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content had negative correlation with PHAm. The compatible solutes accumulation and EPS secretion were the main salt tolerance mechanisms of the PHA producers. This study aims to thoroughly investigate the impact mode of salinity carried by industrial wastewater on the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A 2 O) sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Through comprehensive investigation of the A 2 O stage activated sludge (AS) from 19 industrial WWTPs in the downstream area of the Yangtze River, China, A total of 38 samples of anaerobic sludge and oxic sludge were collected and analyzed. We found that salinity stress significantly inhibits the growth of the AS community, particularly evident in the anaerobic sludge community. Furthermore, the high-saline environment induces changes in the structure and functional patterns of the AS community, leading to intensive interactions and resource exchanges among microorganisms. Halophilic microorganisms may play a crucial role in this process, significantly impacting the overall community structure, especially in the oxic sludge community. Additionally, salinity stress not only suppresses the nitrogen transformation potential of the AS but also leads to the accumulation of nitrite, thereby increasing the emission potential of both NO and N 2 O, exacerbating the greenhouse effect of the A 2 O process in industrial WWTPs. The widespread usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant environmental risks, such as toxicity to organisms and the emergence of superbugs. In this study, different inorganic salts (NaCl, KCl, CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 ) were used to induce endophytes LSE01 isolated from hyperaccumulating plants. After five generations of cultivation under 80 g/L NaCl, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LSE01 to QACs increased by about 3-fold, while its degradation extent increased from 8% to 84% for C 12 BDMA-Cl and 5%-89% for C 14 BDMA-Cl. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and three-dimensional fluorescence spectra indicated that the cells induced by high concentration of salt caused plasmolysis and secreted more bound extracellular polymeric substances (B-EPS); these changes are likely to be an important reason for the observed increased resistance and enhanced degradation extent of LSE01 to QACs. Human impacts on wild populations are numerous and extensive, degrading habitats and causing population declines across taxa. Though these impacts are often studied individually, wild populations typically face suites of stressors acting concomitantly, compromising the fitness of individuals and populations in ways poorly understood and not easily predicted by the effects of any single stressor. Developing understanding of the effects of multiple stressors and their potential interactions remains a critical challenge in environmental biology. Here, we focus on assessing the impacts of two prominent stressors associated with anthropogenic activities that affect many organisms across the planet - elevated salinity (e.g., from road de-icing salt) and temperature (e.g. from climate change). We examined a suite of physiological traits and components of fitness across populations of wood frogs originating from ponds that differ in their proximity to roads and thus their legacy of exposure to pollution from road salt. When experimentally exposed to road salt, wood frogs showed reduced survival (especially those from ponds adjacent to roads), divergent developmental rates, and reduced longevity. Family-level effects mediated these outcomes, but high salinity generally eroded family-level variance. When combined, exposure to both temperature and salt resulted in very low survival, and this effect was strongest in roadside populations. Taken together, these results suggest that temperature is an important stressor capable of exacerbating impacts from a prominent contaminant confronting many freshwater organisms in salinized habitats. The impact of desalination brine on the marine environment is a global concern. Regarding this, salinity is generally accepted as the major environmental factor in desalination concentrate. However, recent studies have shown that the influence of organic contaminants in brine cannot be ignored. Therefore, a non-targeted screening method based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC × GC-qMS) was developed for identifying organic contaminants in the desalination brine. A total of 404 compounds were tentatively identified from four seawater desalination plants (three reverse osmosis plants and one multiple effect distillation plant) in China. The identified compounds were prioritized based on their persistence, bioaccumulation, ecotoxicity, usage, and detection frequency. Twenty-one (21) compounds (seven phthalates, ten pesticides, four trihalomethanes) were then selected for further quantitative analysis and ecological risk assessment, including compounds from the priority list along with substances from the same chemical classes. Ecologically risky substances in brine include diisobutylphthalate and bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate, atrazine and acetochlor, and bromoform. Most of the contaminants come from raw seawater, and no high risk contaminants introduced by the desalination process have been found except for disinfection by-products. In brine discharge management, people believed that all pollution in raw seawater was concentrated by desalination process. This study shows that not all pollutants are concentrated during the desalination process. In this study, the total concentration of pesticide in the brine increased by 58.42%. The concentration of ∑PAEs decreased by 13.65% in reverse osmosis desalination plants and increased by 10.96% in the multi-effect distillation plant. The concentration of trihalomethane increased significantly in the desalination concentrate. The change in the concentration of pollutants in the desalination concentrate was related to the pretreatment method and the chemical characteristics of the contaminants. Agricultural run-off in Australia's Mackay-Whitsunday region is a major source of nutrient and pesticide pollution to coastal and inshore ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef. While the effects of run-off are well documented for the region's coral and seagrass habitats, the ecological impacts on estuaries, the direct recipients of run-off, are less known. This is particularly true for fish communities, which are shaped by the physico-chemical properties of coastal waterways that vary greatly in tropical regions. To address this knowledge gap, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to examine fish assemblages at four locations (three estuaries and a harbour) subjected to varying levels of agricultural run-off during a wet and dry season. Pesticide and nutrient concentrations were markedly elevated during the sampled wet season with the influx of freshwater and agricultural run-off. Fish taxa richness significantly decreased in all three estuaries (F = 164.73, P = <0.001), along with pronounced changes in community composition (F = 46.68, P = 0.001) associated with environmental variables (largely salinity: 27.48% contribution to total variance). In contrast, the nearby Mackay Harbour exhibited a far more stable community structure, with no marked changes in fish assemblages observed between the sampled seasons. Among the four sampled locations, variation in fish community composition was more pronounced within the wet season (F = 2.5, P = 0.001). Notably, variation in the wet season was significantly correlated with agricultural contaminants (phosphorus: 6.25%, pesticides: 5.22%) alongside environmental variables (salinity: 5.61%, DOC: 5.57%). Historically contaminated and relatively unimpacted estuaries each demonstrated distinct fish communities, reflecting their associated catchment use. Most of the available data on diffusion in natural clayey rocks consider tracer diffusion in the absence of a salinity gradient despite the fact that such gradients are frequently found in natural and engineered subsurface environments. To assess the role of such gradients on the diffusion properties of clayey materials, through-diffusion experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of a salinity gradient using salt-diffusion and radioisotope tracer techniques. The experiments were carried out with vermiculite samples that contained equal proportions of interparticle and interlayer porosities so as to assess also the role played by the two types of porosities on the diffusion of water and ions. Data were interpreted using both a classical Fickian diffusion model and with a reactive transport code, CrunchClay that can handle multi-porosity diffusion processes in the presence of charged surfaces. Introduction: Salinity is a key variable in the dynamic and thermal balance of the entire climate system. To address the complexities of diverse terrains and fluctuating ocean waves, we commonly use free-surface models with quasistationary (e.g. height, pressure, or terrain following) coordinates for simulating salinity. In such models, the vertical grid dynamically adjusts with the undulation of seawater. However, this adjustment also occurs when freshwater enters or exits the ocean. Freshwater-induced salinity changes at the ocean's surface are artificially distributed to each vertical layer within a model time step. This means that the freshwater at the ocean surface instantaneously and directly affects the seafloor. This process is different from physical diffusion processes. The diffusion effects caused by the influx and outflow of freshwater have a very small impact on the seafloor. This error leads to salinity non-conservation and disrupts the vertical distribution structure of salinity. Previous studies have also addressed this issue with solutions such as the vertical Lagrangian-remap method. Method: This paper proposes a natural vertical distribution calculation scheme (NVDCS) which is different from the approaches of our predecessors. In the discrete formulation of the original ocean equations, freshwater flux is introduced to ensure salinity conservation. In each model time step, by calculating the seawater volume changes due to freshwater inflow or outflow, as well as the vertical grid changes caused by sea surface undulations, the aforementioned artificial error is eliminated from each vertical layer. Discussion: This scheme ensures that changes in the vertical coordinates of each layer result solely from internal oceanic dynamic processes, avoiding the instantaneous and directly impact of surface freshwater. Ultimately, the influence of freshwater is confined to the ocean surface. Results: This method is straightforward to implement and user-friendly. Sensitivity experiments indicate that in free-surface models, quasi-stationary coordinates introduce artificial errors. The proposed calculation scheme not only eliminates this error but also achieves a better vertical distribution structure than using virtual salt flux, while ensuring salinity conservation. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genetic and agronomic advances consistently lead to an annual increase in global barley yield. Since abiotic stresses (physical environmental factors that negatively affect plant growth) reduce barley yield, it is necessary to predict barley resistance. Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) models are new and powerful tools for predicting product resilience. Considering the research gap in the use of molecular markers in predicting abiotic stresses, this paper introduces a new approach called GenPhenML that combines molecular markers and phenotypic traits to predict the resistance of barley genotypes to drought and salinity stresses by ML models. GenPhenML uses feature selection algorithms to determine the most important molecular markers. It then identifies the best model that predicts atmospheric resistance with lower MAE, RMSE, and higher R2. The results showed that GenPhenML with a neural network model predicted the salinity stress resistance score with MAE, RMSE and R2 values of 0.1206, 0.0308 and 0.9995, respectively. Also, the NN model predicted drought stress scores with MAE, RMSE and R2 values of 0.0727, 0.0105 and 0.9999, respectively. The GenPhenML approach was also used to classify barley genotypes as resistant and stress-sensitive. The results showed that the accuracy, accuracy and F1 score of the proposed approach for salinity and drought stress classification were higher than 97%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
