Estimating ecological environmental flow in tidal rivers is one of the major challenges for sustainable water resource management in estuaries and river basins. This paper presents an ecological environmental flow framework that was developed to accommodate highly dynamic medium tidal estuaries found along the Yellow Sea coast of China. The framework not only proposes a method of water quality-based ecological flow for tidal gate-controlled rivers but also proposes a method of water demand for scouring and silting to protect ports in coastal viscous sediment environments. The framework integrates the instream water requirements of water quality, sediment and basic ecological flow, and considers the temporal and spatial variation differences for the environmental flow requirements of tidal rivers. This study emphasizes the significance and necessity of continuous monitoring of ecological data in determining the environmental flow of tidal rivers. The output of this study could provide vital references for decision-making and management of the water resource allocation and ecological protection in tidal rivers. As human activity increases, coastal ecosystems are becoming increasingly vulnerable to a range of challenges. Oyster reefs are coastal ecosystems that provide habitats for a diverse range of marine species while also purifying water and providing natural coastal defense. However, because of human activity, global oyster reef areas have drastically diminished and are in grave danger. Simultaneously, it is impossible to determine the negative impact of human engineering activity on oyster reefs, due to the lack of intuitive and quantitative study methodologies. To address this issue, we applied a hydrodynamic model to analyze the impact on oyster reefs. First, we considered that human engineering activity, that is, coastal engineering, mainly affects the development of Liyashan Oyster Reefs by influencing hydrodynamics, sediment concentration, and bed-level evolution. We then applied MIKE3 to establish and validate a 3D hydrodynamic model of the southern part of the Yellow Sea around oyster reefs. Results showed that regional variations in flow velocity and suspended sediment concentration occurred in oyster reef waters, but the magnitude of these variations was limited. However, seabed elevation increased substantially in the Center Protection Area, which had a negative impact on oyster reefs. In general, our study provided a paradigm for analyzing the degree of impact on oyster reefs, showed the advantages of hydrodynamic models in quantitatively analyzing impact factors, and had reliable results.

The morphological changes and evolutionary mechanism of the Baisha Shoal in the Qiongzhou Strait were investigated using various methods, including bathymetric chart comparisons, geomodeling, hydrodynamic modeling, and hydrologic statistical analysis. Water depths were extracted from digitized charts to explore the evolution of the Baisha Shoal and to quantitatively estimate the changes in the shoal area within the 5-m isobath. The grain-size trend analysis (GSTA) model was introduced to explain the features of bed sediment distribution and to analyze the sources of the sediment. Tidal flow models and wave models were adopted to simulate the tidal flows and wave fields around the Baisha Shoal and to reveal the sediment transport dynamics. Further comparisons based on a Mann-Kendall trend analysis and remote-sensing image data from different years were used to discuss the reason for the recent evolution of the Baisha Shoal. The results show that the formation of the Baisha Shoal was caused by the combined effects of reciprocating flow in the eastern and western directions and waves from the NE direction. However, in recent years, the Baisha Shoal has demonstrated an unsteady geomorphological state and is transitioning from a deposition-dominated state to an erosion-dominated state. Erosion has become most significant since 2004, as reflected in the shoal area within the 5-m isobath, which is decreasing by 0.732 km2/y. The analysis demonstrated that a reduction in sediment load and increased sand mining are the two most significant factors that are progressively altering the shoal morphology. If these issues cannot be resolved, the strong dynamic surroundings will aggravate the erosion of the Baisha Shoal. This study on the Baisha Shoal highlights the necessity of combining different approaches to better understand coastal evolutionary features, dynamic mechanisms, and evolutionary causes, as well as to guide future coastal protection engineering design. The development of tidal energy in Australia is still a challenge with few studies performed on the characterisation of the resource, due to the difficulty to acquire data and uncertainties about the influence of this anthropogenic activity on the marine environment. Changes in flow could lead to alterations in sediment transport and have further influence on the marine habitat. A case study in a promising area, Banks Strait (Australia), was created using high resolution 2D and 3D models validated against in situ data to investigate changes to hydrodynamic conditions with two scenarios of tidal farms (100 and 300 turbines). Comparison between 2D and 3D is performed to find the best compromise between model accuracy and computational time for preliminary assessment. Changes to current speed and bed shear stress over a 35 day period were found to be localised around the tidal farms and did not extent more than 7 km from the farm (300 turbines) for both 2D and 3D. The results showed that for near field and far field, 2D models are sufficient to give a first approximation of the hydrodynamic influence of tidal farm deployment on its environment. As the largest freshwater lake in China, Poyang Lake plays an important role in the ecosystem of the Yangtze River watershed. The high suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has been an increasingly significant problem under the influence of extensive sand dredging. In this study, a hydrodynamic model integrated with the two-dimensional sediment transport model was built for Poyang Lake, considering sand dredging activities detected from satellite images. The sediment transport model was set with point sources of sand dredging, and fully calibrated and validated by observed hydrological data and remote sensing results. Simulations under different dredging intensities were implemented to investigate the impacts of the spatiotemporal variation of the SSC. The results indicated that areas significantly affected by sand dredging were located in the north of the lake and along the waterway, with a total affected area of about 730 km2, and this was one of the main factors causing high turbidity in the northern part of the lake. The SSC in the northern area increased, showing a spatial pattern in which the SSC varied from high to low from south to north along the main channel, which indicated close agreement with the results captured by remote sensing. In summary, this study quantified the influence of human induced activities on sediment transport for the lake aquatic ecosystem, which could help us to better understand the water quality and manage water resources.
