Permo–Triassic (P–T) successions in Iran are known as one of the most extensive carbonate–evaporite sequences in the world, holding prolific hydrocarbon accumulations, such as the gas fields in the Zagros Basin. This study addresses the impact of paleoenvironmental changes across the P–T extinction boundary, variations in eustatic level and diagenesis on the carbonate reservoir quality of the Permo–Triassic Upper Dalan and Kangan formations in the Lavan Gas Field (offshore Zagros). A total of eight lithofacies have been defined and interpreted, representing the shallower parts (inner ramp to shoal) of a carbonate homoclinal ramp. The diagenetic features show the mixing influence of marine, meteoric and burial processes, with prevalence of multistage dolomitization and late meteoric‐related imprints. The main dolomitization processes are interpreted to be penecontemporaneous and associated with continuous seawater reflux and high evaporation within the intertidal environment. Combined analysis of facies and petrophysical properties has been utilized to define six rock types, including RT4 (grainstones from oolitic shoals) as the best reservoir, whereas RT1 (supratidal anhydrite) is acting as the main cap rock within the studied carbonate–evaporite sequence. Multiscale characterization of lithological and petrophysical properties suggest that the Upper Dalan Formation has a single reservoir unit (D1), whereas the Kangan Formation may be divided into two reservoir units (K1 and K2). The best reservoir quality is promoted by dissolution and dolomitization associated with late Transgressive Sequence Tracts (TST) to early Highstand Sequence Tracts (HST) sequences, while low reservoir quality corresponds to late HST sequences accompanied by pore‐occluded cements. Petrophysical analysis suggest better porosity‐permability for the Upper Dalan than for the Kangan Formation. This observation is closely associated with the different nature of lithofacies, where the Kangan Formation contains more fine‐grained carbonate rocks, and the higher intensity of porosity‐grain dolomitization in the Upper Dalan Formation. This study provides a better understanding on reservoir quality prediction across the P–T boundary and the effect of eustatic fluctuations and diagenesis in controlling porosity‐permeability evolution with similar settings elsewhere. During the Early Carboniferous, the northeastern Qaidam Basin probably formed in an active continental margin setting. Due to marine regression after the late Early Carboniferous, the marginal shelf began to receive more terrestrial clastic sediments, and alternating occurrence of carbonates and siliciclastics characterized this region. Consequently, shales or mudstones with considerable thickness were deposited in the Upper Carboniferous, especially in the Keluke Formation. In order to illuminate a more accurate sedimentary environment of shales and further evaluate the shale gas potential, multidisciplinary traditional methods were conducted including rock core examinations and laboratory analysis. Results reveal that the sedimentary microfacies of shales in the Keluke Formation can be divided into the upper shoreface, the lower shoreface, and the upper to transition offshore. These microfacies developed on a homoclinal carbonate ramp with a gentle slope. The thickest succession of mudstone develops in the lower shoreface, which is a counterpart with the lagoonal setting of a stationary hydraulic system. The quartz content of shale samples ranges from 30% to 66% and clay minerals from 24% to 43% by bulk compositional analysis, which indicates the content of brittle minerals and shales fissility to some extent. The total organic carbon content ranges from 0.5% to 7.6% by weight, with an average value of 2.69% in ZK1‐1 and 1.11% in ZK3‐2, indicating abundant organic matter richness. The kerogen is mainly of type II, which indicates that source for the organic matter is a mixture of higher terrestrial plants and acquatic organisms. The vitrinite reflectance ranges from 1.22% to 1.55%, indicating a moderate to high thermal maturity. Three types of pores are recognized in the shales, including organic pores, intrapartical pores, and interparticle pores. The significance of this work emphasizes two aspects. First, it gives a more detailed classification of sedimentary environment of the mudstone succession; second, it acquires the preliminary subsurface data regarding to the shale gas potential evaluation. Integration of the geological context, core analysis, and petrographic investigation, together with data from wireline logs, resulted in the recognition of petrofacies types and the representation of facies models characterizing the X-XII sand groups of the K2qn3 Formation in the Daqingzijing area of the Songliao Basin, China. The results show that the lithology of the reservoir’s X-XII sand groups includes shale calcium-bearing siltstone and sandstone, calcareous siltstone and silty sandstone. The petrofacies consist mainly of quartz, feldspar and rock fragments cemented by clay, and some samples include calcite. The studied interval was deposited onto a delta front. Four types of petrofacies were recognized: subaqueous distributary channel, mouth bar, distal bar and subaqueous interdistributary bay. According to background investigation, the study area’s X-XII sand groups have experienced a large-scale decline in lake level. In this study, the geochemistry (major, trace and rare earth elements) of fluvial deposits of the Çaybağı and Palu Formations, Eastern Elazığ, have been investigated. The basement of the studied basin is composed of the Guleman Group, Elazığ Magmatics, Hazar-Maden Group, and Kırkgeçit Formation which consist of volcanic materials derived from the Elazığ Magmatics. The Çaybağı Formation is composed of thick fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary sequence. Palu Formation consists of alluvial fan deposits and braided river, lacustrine sedimentary deposits. Samples were collected from braided river deposits of Çaybağı and Palu Formation along Hacısamdere-Çaybağı section (Ç-samples) and Hacısamdere-Palu section (PL samples). Significant positive correlation between Zr/Sc and Th/Sc ratios of two sample groups show that the siliciclastic sample groups do not represent considerable sediment recycling. Çaybağı and Palu samples have similar geochemical indices (Al2O3/TiO2, Ti/Zr, La/Th, La/Sc, Cr/Th, Co/Th, (La/Yb)N, (Gd/Yb)N, LREE/HREE ratios) and indicate derivation from intermediate-basic source rocks. In Si vs. Na/K diagram samples plot in arc field and La/Sc and Ti/Zr ratios show that samples were plotted in an oceanic island arc environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The SW Barents Sea margin experienced a pulse of extensional deformation in the Middle-Late Devonian through the Carboniferous, after the Caledonian Orogeny terminated. These events marked the initial stages of formation of major offshore basins such as the Hammerfest and Nordkapp basins. We mapped and analyzed three major fault complexes, (i) the Måsøy Fault Complex, (ii) the Rolvsøya fault, and (iii) the Troms-Finnmark Fault Complex. We discuss the formation of the Måsøy Fault Complex as a possible extensional splay of an overall NE-SW-trending, NW-dipping, basement-seated Caledonian shear zone, the Sørøya-Ingøya shear zone, which was partly inverted during the collapse of the Caledonides and accommodated top-NW normal displacement in Middle to Late Devonian-Carboniferous times. The Troms-Finnmark Fault Complex displays a zigzag-shaped pattern of NNE-SSW- and ENE-WSW-trending extensional faults before it terminates to the north as a WNW-ESE-trending, NE-dipping normal fault that separates the southwesternmost Nordkapp basin in the northeast from the western Finnmark Platform and the Gjesvær Low in the southwest. The WNW-ESE-trending, margin-oblique segment of the Troms-Finnmark Fault Complex is considered to represent the offshore prolongation of a major Neoproterozoic fault complex, the Trollfjorden-Komagelva Fault Zone, which is made of WNW-ESE-trending, subvertical faults that crop out on the island of Magerøya in NW Finnmark. Our results suggest that the Trollfjorden-Komagelva Fault Zone dies out to the northwest before reaching the western Finnmark Platform. We propose an alternative model for the origin of the WNW-ESE-trending segment of the Troms-Finnmark Fault Complex as a possible hard-linked, accommodation cross fault that developed along the Sørøy-Ingøya shear zone. This brittle fault decoupled the western Finnmark Platform from the southwesternmost Nordkapp basin and merged with the Måsøy Fault Complex in Carboniferous times. Seismic data over the Gjesvær Low and southwesternmost Nordkapp basin show that the low-gravity anomaly observed in these areas may result from the presence of Middle to Upper Devonian sedimentary units resembling those in Middle Devonian, spoon-shaped, late- to post-orogenic collapse basins in western and mid-Norway. We propose a model for the formation of the southwesternmost Nordkapp basin and its counterpart Devonian basin in the Gjesvær Low by exhumation of narrow, ENE-WSW- to NE-SW-trending basement ridges along a bowed portion of the Sørøya-Ingøya shear zone in the Middle to Late Devonian-early Carboniferous. Exhumation may have involved part of a large-scale metamorphic core complex that potentially included the Lofoten Ridge, the West Troms Basement Complex and the Norsel High. Finally, we argue that the Sørøya-Ingøya shear zone truncated and decapitated the Trollfjorden-Komagelva Fault Zone during the Caledonian Orogeny and that the western continuation of the Trollfjorden-Komagelva Fault Zone was mostly eroded and potentially partly preserved in basement highs in the SW Barents Sea. With the recent discovery of new oil fields around the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, a better understanding of the origin of its high-quality lacustrine carbonate reservoirs has become important. The lacustrine carbonates of the upper fourth member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation (ES4s) have been examined using a variety of methods, including core and thin section observations, XRD, SEM, CL and fluid inclusion and isotope testing. The δ13C and δ18O values of the Dongying carbonates differ significantly from Eocene marine values, and the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of carbonate minerals are higher than Eocene marine water and the same as the surrounding Palaeozoic carbonate bedrock. Additionally, the distribution of the carbonates is controlled by the surrounding Palaeozoic carbonate bedrock, all of which indicate their lacustrine origin. Six major carbonate lithofacies are distinguished in the southern gentle slope zone. Bioclastic, oolitic and intraclastic grainstones dominate the littoral to sublittoral zones, while mudstones are mainly distributed in the profundal zone. The ES4s interval is composed of a third-order depositional sequence that contains several small-scale, higher frequency depositional cycles. Overall, stacking patterns of high-frequency depositional cycles are consistent with the general facies variation from basin to shore. Shallow-water grainstones contain both primary intergranular and secondary dissolution pores, whereas the dolomitized mudstones in the profundal zone contain intercrystalline pores and fractures. Diagenetic processes that improve reservoir quality include dissolution and dolomitization. Reservoir quality was diminished by burial calcite cementation and compaction. High-quality reservoirs are mostly distributed in dolomitized grainstones and wackestones, which are deposited in the shoal facies of shallow lakes. Variations in reservoir quality in the Dongying Depression are due to a combination of lithofacies type, dissolution intensity, early dolomitization and tectonic-related deformation. Due to the influx of meteoric waters and shallow burial depth, the grainstones in the littoral zone have the best reservoir quality. Continental rifting and ocean basin formation is occurring today in the Red Sea, providing a possible modern analogue for the creation of mid-ocean ridges. Yet many of the seafloor features observed along the axis of the Red Sea appear anomalous compared to ancient and modern examples of mid-ocean ridges in other parts of the world, making it unclear, until recently, whether the Red Sea is truly analogous. Recent work suggests that the main morphological differences between the Red Sea Rift (RSR) and other mid-ocean ridges are due to the presence and movement of giant, submarine salt flows, which blanket large portions of the rift valley and thereby the oceanic crust. Using ship-based, high-resolution multibeam bathymetry of the central RSR between 16.5°N and 23°N we focus here on the RSR volcanic terrains not covered by salt and sediments and compare their morphologies to those observed along slow and ultra-slow spreading ridges elsewhere. Regional variations in style and intensity of volcanism can be related to variations in volcanic activity and mantle heat flow. The Red Sea oceanic seafloor shows typical features of mature (ultra)slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges, such as 2nd order discontinuities (overlapping spreading centres) and magma focussing in the segment centres (forming spreading-perpendicular volcanic ridges of thick oceanic crust). The occurrence of melt-salt interaction at locations where salt glaciers blanket the neovolcanic zone, and the absence of large detachment faults are unique features of the central RSR. These features can be related to the young character of the Red Sea and may be applicable to all young oceanic rifts, associated with plumes and/or evaporites. Thus, the RSR falls in line with (ultra)slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges globally, which makes the Red Sea a unique but highly important type example for initiation of slow rifting and seafloor spreading and one of the most interesting targets for future ocean research. Wulanhuxiu, a middle Eocene locality in the Erlian Basin, Nei Mongol (China) has been commonly regarded as belonging to the Ulan Shireh Formation, equated with the Irdin Manha Formation. We recognized two separate mammalian faunas of different age from the beds exposed at Wulanhuxiu. The lower fossiliferous horizon contains an anagalid, uncommon duplicidentate representatives (Gomphos progressus sp. nov., Mimolagus, Erenlagus, and Strenulagus), and diverse perissodactyls. This combination of taxa points to an Irdinmanhan age, but one element of the fauna (Schlosseria) may represent an Arshantan relic. Overall, the assemblage comprises "paleoplacental" mammals mixed with "neoplacentals". The upper horizon is less species-rich and the only paleoplacentals present are scarce creodonts. However, this horizon is marked by abundant remains (including postcranial material) of the lagomorph Gobiolagus and by the presence of an advanced form of Gobiomys (Rodentia), and is most probably Sharamurunian in age. Thus, Wulanhuxiu documents replacement, albeit incomplete, of paleoplacentals by neoplacentals in the Chinese Eocene record. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Upper Jurassic Emuerhe Formation was developed with abundant sedimentary facies types in the western section of the Mohe Basin. Based on the systematic sampling and detailed observation on the Emuerhe Formation of this section, the research on the sandstone grain size characteristics of the Emuerhe Formation was carried out with the grain size parameters features (Mz, SK1, KG and σ1), the sensitive components parameters features (SCPGS, SCGSR and SCPV) and the grain size analytical graphs features (grain size frequency curves, grain size cumulative curves, probability cumulative curves and C-M plots). The comprehensive analytical results illustrate that the hydrodynamic energy of the Emuerhe Formation (three times fan delta facies, two times sandy shallow lake microfacies and five times turbidite deposit) in the western section gradually reduced from bottom to top. In addition, the hydrodynamic energy of each fan delta facies gradually enhanced from bottom to top. Based on the analysis of the hydrodynamic conditions of the Emuerhe Formation in the western section, the hydrodynamic conditions evolution history of this section can be divided into five sedimentary phases, namely respectively for the fan delta sedimentary phase, the first-time sandy shallow lake microfacies sedimentary phase, the short-term deep lake subfacies sedimentary phase, the second-time sandy shallow lake microfacies sedimentary phase and the relatively stable deep lake subfacies sedimentary phase from bottom to top. The Oligocene and Early Miocene Khojak Formation represent a deltaic to sub-marine fan succession in the Khojak-Pishin flysch belt within the Katawaz basin of Pakistan. The sandstone within this succession is dominated by sedimentary and metamorphic clasts and has been derived from recycled orogeny. The higher SiO2/Al2O3 atios (4.0) show moderately mature nature of the sandstone. The weathering indices such as 2 2 3 Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA; 76.69), Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW; 86.79), Chemical Proxy of Alteration (CPA; 92.33) and Index of Chemical Variability (ICV; 16.83) suggest moderate to intense weathering at the source terrain. The high Th/U values (5.25) as compared to Upper Continental Crust (UCC; 3.82) also support the enhanced weathering of the source area. Trace elements such as Zr, Nb, Y, Th and U are slightly enriched compared to UCC suggest the dominantly felsic sources for the formation. High enrichment of Cr, Ni and V, and moderate ratios of Cr/Ni (1.72) and Cr/V (1.83) indicate substantial contributions from ultramafic sources while fairly high percentages of Fe2O3 (7.66) and MgO (3.90) as compared to UCC (5.03% 2 3 and 2.20%, respectively) hints toward mafic sources. The tectonic setting for the Khojak sandstone is considered as continental arc to active continental margin. This study supports the notion that the western Himalayan orogenic belt was shedding largely felsic detritus to Katawaz basin through proto-Indus River, while mafic and ultramafic detritus were being fed by distant Kohistan Island Arc and en-route Waziristan, Zhob and Muslim Bagh Ophiolite and associated mélanges. Miano gas field is one of the prominent gas-producing fields of the Middle Indus Basin, SW Pakistan. The Lower Goru is the distinct reservoir that is producing hydrocarbons for the last two decades. This study attempts to characterize the Goru reservoir using preliminary seismic interpretation to the 2D seismic profiles of the Miano gas field Pakistan. The velocity models confirm the presence of possible hydrocarbon bearing sands within the reservoir interval of interest. The Iso-pach map of the Lower Goru coincides with the identified low velocity zones. The massive clean sands are identified on the NE and the SE flanks within the reservoir zone. The well correlation show the maximum sand thickness near the well 02, suggesting the possible locations for the future oil and gas explorations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Anayet Basin, in the central Pyrenees, records a Stephanian–Permian continental succession including three Permian volcanic episodes. The absolute chronology of these rocks has allowed us to better constrain the early post-Variscan evolution of the Pyrenees. The transtensional regime responsible for the formation of the pull-apart Anayet Basin began at least in Stephanian times, the age of the first post-Variscan deposits in the area, and lasted until Late Permian. During Middle Eocene times, the Alpine Orogeny inverted the Anayet Basin and led to the formation of south-vergent chevron folds and axial plane penetrative cleavage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The late Permian thermal events related to Emeishan Basalt has made a great impact on the underlying carbonate rock properties in the western margin of the Yangtze Platform. In this paper, we investigate the carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of the Qixia Formation carbonates from two sections: the Qiaoting Section in the northeastern part of the Sichuan Basin and the Changjianggou Section at the northwestern edge of the Basin. The data reveal that: (i) Samples from Qiaoting section show a relatively narrow range of d13C and d18O, varying from 2.7? to 5.2? with an average of 4.2?, and -3.8? to -7.8? with an average of -5.4?, respectively. In contrast, Samples from Changjianggou section exhibit larger magnitude of variation in d13C and d18O, ranging from -1? to 3.8? with an average of 1.5?, and -2.1 to -9.2?, with an average of -6.0? respectively; (ii) d13C and d18O records in carbonates from Qiaoting section are similar to those of Middle Permian seawater whereas carbonates from the Changjianggou section are depleted in 13C and 18O compared to contemporary seawater; (iii) On the basis of combined petrographic and paleo-heat flow evidence, the lower carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of the carbonates from the Changjianggou section are interpreted to be the results of thermal effects of Emeishan Basalt because of its proximity to the eruption center of the basalt. The high temperature reduced the d18O values of the carbonates and forced the organic matter to mature at an early stage, thus producing 13C-enriched carbon dioxide to participate in the formation of carbonates. The end-Permian extinction records the greatest ecological catastrophe in Earth history. The vertebrate fossil record in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, has been used for more than a century as the standard for understanding turnover in terrestrial ecosystems, recently claimed to be in synchrony with the marine crisis. Workers assumed that systematic turnover at the Dicynodon assemblage zone boundary, followed by the appearance of new taxa directly above the base of the Lystrosaurus assemblage zone, is the continental expression of the end-Permian event and recovery. To test this hypothesis, we present the first high-precision age on strata close to the inferred Permian-Triassic boundary. A U-Pb isotope dilution--thermal ionization mass spectrometry zircon age of 253.48 ± 0.15 Ma (early Changhsingian) is from a silicified ash layer ~60 m below the current vertebrate-defined boundary at Old Lootsberg Pass (southern South Africa). This section yields newly discovered plants and vertebrates, and is dominated by a normal polarity signature. Our collective data suggest that the Dicynodon-Lystrosaurus assemblage zone boundary is stratigraphically higher than currently reported, and older than the marine extinction event. Therefore, the turnover in vertebrate taxa at this biozone boundary probably does not represent the biological expression of the terrestrial end-Permian mass extinction. The actual Permian-Triassic boundary in the Karoo Basin is either higher in the Katberg Formation or is not preserved. The Julian Alps (western Slovenia) structurally belong to the eastern Southern Alps. The Upper Triassic succession mostly consists of shallow water platform carbonates of the Dolomia Principale-Dachstein Limestone system and a deep water succession of the Slovenian Basin outcropping in the southern foothills of the Julian Alps. In addition to the Slovenian Basin, a few other intraplatform basins were present, but they remain poorly researched and virtually ignored in the existing paleogeographic reconstructions of the eastern Southern Alps. Herein, we describe a deepening-upward succession from the Tamar Valley (north-western Slovenia), belonging to the Upper Triassic Tarvisio Basin. The lower, Julian-Tuvalian part of the section comprises peritidal to shallow subtidal carbonates (Conzen Dolomite and Portella Dolomite), and an intermediate carbonate-siliciclastic unit, reflecting increased terrigenous input and storm-influenced deposition (Julian-lowermost Tuvalian shallow-water marlstone and marly limestone of the Tor Formation). Above the drowning unconformity at the top of the Portella Dolomite, Tuvalian well-bedded dolomite with claystone intercalations follows (Carnitza Formation). The latter gradually passes into the uppermost Tuvalian-lowermost Rhaetian bedded dolomite with chert and slump breccias, deposited on a slope and/or at the toe-of-slope (Bača Dolomite). Finally, basinal thin-bedded bituminous limestone and marlstone of Rhaetian age follow (Frauenkogel Formation). The upper part of the Frauenkogel Formation contains meter-scale platform-derived limestone blocks, which are signs of platform progradation. The Tarvisio Basin may have extended as far as the present Santo Stefano di Cadore area, representing a notable paleogeographic unit at the western Neotethys margin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon isotopes are analyzed for the first time from the Ordovician-Silurian boundary interval in the Williston and Hudson Bay basins of Manitoba, revealing a prominent positive excursion. The nature of this excursion and its co-occurrence with the appearance of the Ozarkodina hassi Conodont Zone and a distinctive coral-dominated macrofauna indicate that this is the upper portion ( Metabolograptus persculptus Graptolite Zone) of the globally recognized Hirnantian isotopic carbon excursion (HICE). As a result, the Ordovician-Silurian boundary is placed at a higher position than previously thought, at the disconformable Stonewall - Fisher Branch formational boundary in the Williston Basin, and probably the Port Nelson - Severn River formational boundary in the Hudson Bay Basin. Disconformities within sections suggest periods of nondeposition due to subaerial exposure as sea level fluctuated during the Late Ordovician glaciation. Latest Ordovician (Hirnantian) deposition was far more widespread on the Laurentian craton than realized previously.
