In spoken languages, new information is often expressed with a longer duration than given information. We investigated whether signers use duration to mark information status. Fifty deaf Chinese Sign Language (CSL) signers retold a cartoon clip, and we examined how they tracked references. The results showed that CSL signers mostly used nominals, classifiers and constructed actions, but rarely used any pointing or zero anaphora. When focusing on nominals, newly introduced references had a longer duration than the maintained and re-introduced ones, while the durations of maintained and re-introduced nominals did not differ. Additionally, there was a gradient decrease in sign duration over the first three mentions followed by an increase for the fourth and fifth mentions. Furthermore, between two nominal mentions, the more non-nominal referring there were, the shorter the duration of the current nominal mention. Thus, CSL signers vary the duration of nominals to indicate the degree of accessibility.

This paper explores the use of linguistic strategies, specifically discourse markers like 'but', to express contrasts between expectations and reality when faced with unexpected events. The study concentrates on Denial of Expectation (DofE), themost powerful form of contrast, which arises when the expected value based on background assumptions is not met. The main focus of this paper is to model DofE as a weighted homogeneous relationship between object properties. The aim is to predict DofE for numerical properties in specific contexts. I aim to address a gap in previous models by considering the role of context. This is achieved by analyzing contrastive sentences from German car and motorcycle reviews. The research presents the concept of expectation intervals for scalar properties. These intervals align with expectations and exceeding them triggers a potential contrast. The study incorporates causality, expected behavior, and a shift function in selecting contrastive pairs, transforming the conditions into an algorithm.Keywords: contrast; computational and cognitive modeling; discourse analysis

A speaker's use of language is one of the most important indicators in detecting deception. To date, however, little research has focused on grammatical cues used in deceitful statements. One such cue is evidentiality which is the grammatical encoding for the source of information; i.e., whether the speaker has direct or indirect access to what they assert. This study investigates whether and how evidentiality coding in Turkish, an evidential language, interacts with producing deceitful and truthful narratives. Deceptive retellings were notably longer and syntactically more complex compared to truthful counterparts. Our hypothesis of increased past forms in deception was confirmed, alongside a heightened use of direct evidential inflection (–DI) in deceptive conditions. This exploration sheds light on the nuanced relationship between grammatical evidentiality and deceptive language use.

This article presents an ecolinguistic framework for analysing advertising and applies it to a wide range of TV advertisements for Coca-Cola. This particular product was selected because of well-publicised criticisms of its impact on health and the environment. The framework classifies advertisements into one of five types: classic-type, identity-type, narrative-type, cause-type, and counter-type, with many advertisements being hybrids of more than one type. The analysis uses multimodal discourse analysis to reveal underlying messages behind the advertisements, and judges these according to an ecosophy based on the World Health Organisation's concept of One Health. The aim of the analysis is to reveal linguistic and multimodal features that are used to persuade people to purchase products which potentially harm both the consumer and the environment. The results can be practically applied in critical language awareness materials that can promote healthier and more environmentally beneficial purchasing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the nature and structure of Polish discourses on copyright, specifically revealing to what extent social conflict over copyright is visible within these discourses and presenting the most important parties in this conflict. Following Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s discursive reconstruction of the hegemony, the article indicates that Polish copyright discourses are structured by an alternating sequence of discursive hegemonic and counter-hegemonic practices. The article specifies the most important logic applied within discursive battles over copyright by deconstructing the central dualities visible in Polish copyright debates. Hegemonization and counter-hegemonization of the discourses are indicated based on the discourse analysis of the Polish public debate on copyright and a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews and focus group interviews with representatives of selected parties in the social conflict over copyright. Public policies can be interpreted as the result of government decision-making, which is built on preferences expressed in parliament through political discourses. Objectives: to identify which are the preferences and objectives introduced in the agenda of the regional governments in order to deepen the role they play within the governance of the Higher Education System (SES). Methodology: through documentary analysis of the investiture discourses of four Spanish regional cases (Andalusia, Catalonia, Galicia, and Madrid), governmental preferences in Higher Education (HE) and Research and Development (R&D) between 1980 and 2021 are identified. It also describes territorial diversity and change in HES governance over time. Results: territorial variations in HES governance have been identified, as well as differences in the connection between HE and R&D issues. Conclusions: HES governance has moved towards self-regulation and state supervision, although this trend is far from being general, given that differentiated strategies are established at the regional level, some of them compatible with traditional forms of rational planning and control of the HES. Landscape governance challenges, particularly in peri-urban contexts like the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) region in South India, exemplify 'wicked' problems due to their inherent complexities. These challenges arise from a mix of conflicting interests, policy ambiguities, and sociocultural dynamics, which often blur the definition of problems and hinder effective solutions. Despite apparent options for resolution, stakeholder disagreements and deep uncertainties about implementation strategies complicate governance. This study, therefore, has two broad objectives. The first objective is to analyze the local discourses surrounding planned policy interventions around the BNP region in South India. Based on the findings, the second objective is to draw insights for sustainable natural resource governance research and practice. We applied Q-methodology to understand the discourses that underpin various conflicts in the rapidly urbanizing elephant corridor at BNP. We elicited information on how various local actors frame solutions to current collective action challenges in the BNP landscape and their perspectives on the proposed eco-sensitive zone notification, as well as the functioning of current policy interventions concerning conservation and development. The study uncovers the micropolitics and power regimes underpinning various natural resource governance challenges and demonstrates the utility of the Q-methodology in bringing diverse perspectives together in response to 'wicked' governance challenges. This article delves into the intricate interplay among state institutions, belief systems, dominant discourses and alternative spiritual healing practices in Egypt. It scrutinises the challenges encountered by individuals seeking spiritual healing within a societal framework shaped by educational and religious institutions, social norms, media and the law. Employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates social anthropology, discourse analysis and cultural studies, the research sheds light on the regulations and limitations imposed on individuals by state-generated discourses, compelling adherence to prescribed rules and belief systems. The analysis explores how power hierarchy and dominant institutions, which categorise certain practices as disordered due to their ritualistic nature, are challenged by practitioners persisting in their work and seekers continuing to pursue these services. Deforestation is one of the most relevant transformations characterizing global environmental change in the tropics at present. There is wide consensus in pointing the context-dependent nature of tropical deforestation. In this sense, a better characterization of the phenomenon considering the social context could provide a more accurate picture of tropical deforestation. With this aim, a Q-methodology discourse analysis was conducted to characterise the different discourses that coexist in the particular region of the Paraguayan Chaco concerning the development of cattle ranching and derived deforestation. Four different discourses were identified as making sense the wide range of interests and values coexisting and clashing in the Paraguayan Chaco, namely: the Environmentalist discourse, the Business discourse, the Resigned discourse, and the Possibilist discourse. The results point that the fundamental differences between the discourses are largely explained by the different positions on three specific domains: (i) the socio-economic benefits the expansion of cattle ranching brings about; (ii) the environmental impacts the expansion of cattle ranching and the derived deforestation brings on; and, finally (iii) the degree to which an active intervention from the side of policy making to regulate the expansion of cattle ranching and to minimize possible detrimental effects is seen as necessary. Amidst Iran's confrontation with Western modernity and the subsequent discursive conflicts, women's lives, identities, and living conditions came to the forefront as prominent topics of discourse. This resulted in an extensive array of discussions concerning them, thereby transforming women into a subject of tension. This article analyzes the discourses that emerged concerning women in the writings of the Constitutional era. It employs critical discourse analysis to investigate how the modern woman subject was formulated in the most prominent discourses of this era. The objective of this study is to comprehend the ideologies that govern each discourse of the Constitutional era as they pertain to the modern woman subject. Additionally, the position and status of each discourse within the hegemonic discourse are examined. The results suggest that the progressive discourse presents the modern woman as a demanding and critical subject, having been formed in opposition to tradition. Conversely, the traditional discourse depicts her as a liberated and European-like figure. In the midst of these semantic disputes, the integrative discourse constructs the subject of a woman who is acknowledged as a conscientious, Sharia-compliant, and dutyoriented individual. The integrative discourse's construction of meaning, which avoided explicit conflict with religious traditions, attained a more advantageous position and has maintained its existence throughout subsequent eras. Innovative communication theories propose that we understand messages not by decoding their meaning but by inferring what speakers intend to express. However scientifically accurate the messages climate scientists have put forward, the appropriate inferences may not have been drawn by most of their audiences. One of the main reasons may be that scientific metaphors allow for multiple interpretations, yet, because of their expressive power, they impact discourses disproportionately. Climate communication took a path of euphemistic scientific expressions partially due to the noble scientific norms of self-restraint and modesty, but the hidden implications of climate jargon distort the way non-experts think about the heating climate. Consequently, the current climate jargon hinders informed decisions about Earth's life support systems. Changing the softened expressions of climate language, from the cool of basic research to the heat and compassion of medical contexts, may allow for more productive public and political debates -- which may lead to more powerful policy solutions. Speaking and thinking in medical terms could turn the perception of worst case scenarios from hypotheticals or doomism to life-saving interventions. We typically start reducing fever before it gets out of control, let alone crosses a threshold of potential death. Instead of putting on a positivist mascara, a calm and serious discussion of safety measures in medical terms, for example, talking about climatic tipping cascades as metastases, could foster a more honest evaluation of the required legal and regulatory steps to keep our home planet habitable. This article interprets, through Courtine's historical semiology in dialogue with discourse analysis, the technophilic discourse inscribed in MegaBeast Investigator Jaspion. The Metal hero series, of which Jaspion is a part, establishes an alliance between the technological body and the defense of the democratic State. This alliance is established in opposition to that constituted by the monstrous body and the imperial State. For the latter, we diagnosed technophobia - technology obliterated in the monster's body - and, for the first one, technophilia - power and efficiency in the hero's technological body. The question is: "How does the technophilic discourse operate, in productions like Jaspion, the negativization of the monstrous body and the positivization of the superhero's body?" This article examines the impact of social networks on the construction of meanings around the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil in 2020 and 2021. More specifically, our objective is to analyze the virtual memorial @museudoisolamento on Instagram, observing in its emergence the forms of resignification of death and mourning generated in the face of a context of instability and of Brazilian political crisis. Through French discourse analysis, we seek to understand how this memorial became a significant linguistic event, in which it brought new senses of uniqueness, giving voice, body, and meaning to the mourners, contrary to cold statistics and official numbers. Lexical choices in a law text contribute to the creation of discourse. The issuance of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation Law in Indonesia has resulted in a controversial public discussion concerning questionable educational practices in Indonesia. This study attempted to investigate the accumulated ideas that depict a represented discourse by exploring cohesive devices used in public interpretation regarding the impacts of the inclusion of Article 65 on education policy and practices according to the Job Creation Law. The data were garnered online from public figures' opinions shared in the Academic Association, Legal Aid Agency, Taman Siswa Family's Association, Indonesian Teacher Union, Ma'arif Nahdlatul Ulama, and Education Observer Group. The collected interpretation was analyzed by identifying how lexical features were used in the interpretation to construct ideas. The analysis indicates that the public figures' interpretation shared a common conception that the Job Creation Law intended to construct. The law signals the idea of administering education as a business, potentially affecting the uncontrolled establishments of associations and foundations that administer education in Indonesia. Prompted by the increasing public focus on environmental policy and the continuous inability of States to reach environmental targets agreed upon in the context of the United Nations and the European Union, we explore the development of discourses within the Danish public agenda regarding nature management 2016–2021. This is done through a mixed-methods framework of discourse analysis and structural topic modeling based on documents from the Danish Parliament's Environmental committee 2016–2021, estimating topic prevalence, and analyzing the discourses within each topic, resulting in a qualitative overview of 21 identified topics and their associated discourses and an overview of how the different topic proportions changed over time. A shift in the public agenda was found: a change from discussions about untouched forest focused on trade-offs between timber extraction and biodiversity, to a discussion about different understandings of animal welfare in the context of large grazers in nature national parks in Denmark. Discourse analysis encompasses a variety of disciplinary approaches that broadly aim to understand how individuals and groups use language to construct and maintain their psychological and social realities. A central concept in discourse analysis is we all use discourse to accomplish our communication goals despite being unaware of most discourses we evoke. While discourse studies could help counseling professionals to better understand how they deploy discourses to maintain identities, inequalities, and status quo, the method is not well-represented in counseling research in the United States. This methodological guide presents an introduction to discourse analysis and an overview of the analytic framework, highlighting discourse studies conducted germane to counseling research and practice. This article is aimed at analysing the modes in which educational instruction and equality are joined together in the official pedagogic discourse in Argentina during the period 2003-2019. This short period encompasses two moments of engaging in debates over the nature of this articulation--namely, the presidencies of Néstor Kirchner followed by Cristina Fernández (2003-2105) and that of Mauricio Macri (2015-2019). The analysis will be constructed through conceptual tools and methodologies arising from a political analysis of the discourse and will involve a set of documents that constitute expressions of the official discursiveness on the national level. The trajectory realised in this review considers three political-pedagogical antagonisms throughout the length of the period analysed: regarding (i) the idea of equality in official discourse, (ii) pedagogy as specific language for the construction of educational policies, and (iii) the degree of politicizing in the training and work of teachers. For several decades, video games have been characterized as new forms of art and, at the same time, they are important elements of mass consumption, creating a highly successful industry with millions of fans around the world. But during its first decades of commercialization in the domestic sector, the content of video games was limited in terms of its graphic power, and its advertising resorted to the use of hand-drawn covers to better represent the game content. What is proposed is that art was used strategically to generate desire for consumption, therefore, the purpose of the work will be to reflect on the social uses of art focused on consumption, through the analysis of the discourse of some video game covers in the 1980s. This research investigated how food bloggers produce discourses about well-being and their relationship with food. The research question set for this research is: How does well-being appear in the food bloggers' discourses of their relationship with food? Two data sets were obtained: The first data collection comprised 16 bloggers (10 women and six men), who had written food blog articles in November 2017. The second data set included an email survey among the food bloggers (N=19). The data were analyzed using the discourse analysis method based on the PERMA theory. The findings showed how multidimensional a picture of well-being can be achieved when analyzing food-related discourses. In this article, we aim to analyze a preservice teaching internship report to understand the disciplinary power present in the narrative, the extent of dialogism, and the importance of active listening in the supervised curricular internship. We draw upon the studies related to discourse analysis by Mikhail Bakhtin (2004; 2011) concerning the conception of dialogism, and Michel Foucault (1999a; 1999b), regarding institutional power relations. We observe that the report presents itself as a descriptive account of the experiences during the internship, with little reflection on the process and its significance in the formation of future teachers. The report appears more as a monological discourse, where a single voice encompasses all other voices. Nevertheless, there are some parts of the report where issues related to disciplinary power are present. Our analysis emphasizes the need to cultivate dialogic reporting by encouraging prospective teachers to develop a more reflective approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a product-based teacher professional development workshop in the Just Do Math program as a case, this study investigated the discourse between teachers and teacher educators from three perspectives, namely focus, form, and flow, to see how the two cohorts communicated in the co-construction, whether the co-construction is feasible to produce innovative teaching materials, and what the feasible dialogical modes are for this co-construction. The participants included four experienced university-based mathematics teacher educators and 38 mathematics teachers. The discourse from the eight 3-hour sessions of the workshop was collected. The findings included that both teachers and teacher educators focused more on students' development of concepts than on learning motivation, even if learning motivation was one main problem to be solved. Feasible dialogical modes for co-construction in teacher professional development workshops in the context of East Asian educational cultures were revealed, which could be described as teacher educator-centred but teacher-focused. This article aims to explore the discourse construction through the institutional apparatus and technologies within Pyhä-Luosto National Park, one of the first two national parks established in Finland, by analysing visitors’ reviews. This article investigates the causes behind the differing levels of emphasis that tourists of various languages (Finnish and other languages) and cultural backgrounds place on environmental values or physical activities during their visits. By employing a mixed-methods approach, merging quantitative (frequency analysis) and qualitative (discourse analysis) methodologies, the analysis reveals a distinct divergence in the visitor experiences of the national park based on the background of visitors. Finnish-speaking visitors exhibit a stronger preference for landscape, while international visitors emphasize the experiences derived from physical activities. Through a closer field study in PyhäLuosto National Park, it is proposed that these differences originate from distinct cultural contexts and environmental engagements that shape each visitor’s interaction with the natural landscape. The contributions in this special issue explore the intersection of discourse, crises and the political during the Covid-19 pandemic. By focusing on 'the political', the contributors go beyond understandings of 'politics' as procedures and processes of decision-making. Instead, they explore the nuanced ways in which pandemic discourses shape struggles over the normalised socio-political order and its legitimate subjects. By adopting diverse theoretical perspectives on the political, ranging from governmentality to poststructuralist theory, and by employing traditions from different disciplines such as political theory, sociology, anthropology, or media-aesthetics, the articles scrutinise pandemic discourses in various regions, including in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ghana, Estonia and the Polish-German border region. The contributions highlight how discourses of the Covid-19 pandemic construct, stabilise and re-configure political identities, subjectivities and normalities within pandemic societies. They show that pandemic discourses allow for a recognition of shared vulnerabilities, while simultaneously perpetuating inequalities and reinforcing established neoliberal subjectivities, such as the 'responsible subject'. The articles compiled in the special issue offer critical insights into the complex dynamics of pandemic discourses and put a spotlight on how societies are (re-)imagined during times of crisis. Background: Recently, scholars have called for increasing so-called "soft-skills" held by engineering students, particularly their ability to empathize. In response, educational researchers at Texas Tech University developed a series of "humanities-driven STEM" (HDSTEM) courses, undergraduate courses co-taught by humanities and sciences professors. These courses expose students to an academic topic from both a humanities and STEM-based approach. This study examines the coursework of engineering students enrolled in "History and Engineering in the Second World War." Purpose: We examine the ways that engineering students expressed and developed empathetic positions in their coursework over the trajectory of the HDSTEM course. Design: Students completed four "design, measure, analyze, improve, control" (DMAIC) assignments in this course, wherein they examined a feat of engineering developed during World War 2. During the second and third assignment, they added an "empathize" step (EDMAIC). We use content and discourse analyses to compare their four assignments, especially the ways in which they empathize. We also rated their first and last assignments on an empathy rubric, using Pearson's correlations of interrater reliability to determine empathetic growth. Results: Controlling for the additional empathy step, students regularly had more to say when asked to empathize. Discourse analysis revealed students attempting various rhetorical moves and constructions of an empathetic identity within their coursework, even the final assignment that did not ask them to empathize. Pearson's correlations show, on average, a 1-point of empathetic growth for each student on a 4-point scale (r = .72; p < .01). Conclusions: If we are to teach empathetic and other humanitarian skills to engineering students, we must develop a space where this kind of thinking, and these reflections, are normalized. Doing so does not necessarily require an HDSTEM framework, but requires intentional course design to discuss and foster these attitudes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

В статье рассматривается актуализация сенсуальных параметров гастрономического медиа-дискурса на материале видео-рецептов кулинарных блогеров, говорящих на английском языке (Дженнаро Контальдо, Шерил Ли и Глен Поуэлл). В статье представлены жанровые особенности гастрономического медиа-дискурса, одной из которых является проявление сенсуальных параметров. К сенсуальным параметрам относятся вкус, запах, текстура, цвет и количество. Манифестация сенсуальных параметров характерна речи всех видео-блогеров, что говорит об универсальности данного аспекта в рамках гастрономического медиа-дискурса. Выявлены две основные функции актуализации сенсуальных параметров: привлечение зрителей к готовке и уточнение параметров приготовления. Разница проявления сенсуальных параметров зависит от условий реализации дискурса.

Diplomatic discourse is a formalized form of political communication that significantly influences a country's international perception. However, there is a research gap in the analysis of China's diplomatic discourse, particularly in relation to the speeches available on the official Chinese Foreign Ministry website. This study aims to address this gap by conducting a quantitative and qualitative analysis of China's diplomatic speeches. This study utilizes a quantitative corpus-assisted discourse analysis to explore the prevalent themes in China's official speeches. Additionally, qualitative discourse analysis is employed to examine the ideologies manifested in specific examples from the official speeches. The research combines a corpus-based approach with critical discourse analysis to investigate language use, discourse practices, and social practices. The analysis of China's diplomatic discourse reveals several key themes related to President Xi Jinping's leadership, international relations, and future community and economy. The findings provide valuable insights into China's diplomatic strategies and its international image, emphasizing its commitment to cooperation, development, and peace. This research contributes to a better understanding of China's diplomatic discourse and its role in shaping international perceptions of the country. By highlighting the prevalent themes and ideologies in China's official speeches, the study emphasizes China's commitment to fostering positive international relations. Educational landscape reports have historically contributed to advocating for changes that would benefit learners, including recommendations for digital technologies and their use. The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably affected education, pushing institutions to quickly adapt to the emergency through the use of technology. This scenario has impacted the discourse on educational technologies and their implementation. Seeking to better understand this discourse and its potential impact on education, drawing from a range of scholarly literature—including discourse analysis, critical discourse studies, and studies on educational technology and change—this study focuses on how technology has been presented in a major yearly publication in 2020, 2021, and 2022. This study adds to the literature by presenting findings that show that technology corporations can play a crucial role in shaping educational technology discourses in landscape reports, including how technology should be adopted and the very future of higher education. Additionally, it reinforces the need for critical awareness of how different publications may push corporate agendas disguised as impartial expert guidance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A discourse containing one or more sentences describes daily issues and events for people to communicate their thoughts and opinions. As sentences are normally consist of multiple textsegments, correct understanding of the theme of a discourse should take into consideration of the relations in between text segments. Although sometimes a connective exists in raw texts for conveying relations, it is more often the cases that no connective exists in between two text segments but some implicit relation does exist in between them. The task of implicit discourse relation recognition (IDRR) is to detect implicit relation and classify its sense between two text segments without a connective. Indeed, the IDRR task is important to diverse downstream natural language processing tasks, such as text summarization, machine translation, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey for the IDRR task. We first summarize the task definition and data sources widely used in the field. We categorize the main solution approaches for the IDRR task from the viewpoint of its development history. In each solution category, we present and analyze the most representative methods, including their origins, ideas, strengths, and weaknesses. We also present performance comparisons for those solutions experimented on a public corpus with standard data processing procedures. This paper focuses on the analysis of a specialised American police discourse genre and is based on a corpus of 115 probable cause affidavits. A probable cause affidavit is a sworn statement written by American police officers to state that there is probable cause to believe the defendant has committed (or is committing) a criminal offence and that legal action is required. After briefly presenting the methodological framework for this study, the paper intends to show how the police use specific linguistic, discursive and rhetorical strategies to serve a specialised purpose, which is to present the existence of probable cause to the relevant legal authorities. The findings indicate that officers use various discursive devices to inform but also—and perhaps more importantly—to convince their audience by means of a chronological and structured narrative of events that follows a prototypical three-fold internal organisation (exposition, investigation, resolution) signalled by specific linguistic markers. Finally, the paper intends to go beyond the objective description of events in order to highlight the assertive nature of this discourse genre and the additional rhetorical strategies used by PCA writers. This study investigates the multifaceted functions of language in undergraduate classroom discourse, focusing on how students utilize various language functions to enhance learning and communication in diverse educational settings. Through a descriptive qualitative analysis of classroom interactions, it reveals that students actively engage with both formal and informal teaching methods, fostering social interaction and critical thinking. Judgmental functions dominate the discourse, indicating a prevalent use of evaluation and critical analysis in student talk. However, the study also uncovers that responses to questions are multifaceted, often involving argumentative and informative discourse for deeper engagement with content. The research highlights the integral role of instructors in facilitating a classroom environment that promotes robust student discourse and equitable participation. The findings emphasize the need for educators to be aware of and integrate both recognized and uncategorized language functions into instructional strategies to support student communication and learning. Conclusively, this study provides insights into the dynamic application of language functions within classroom discourse and the crucial role of educators in guiding and enhancing this discourse. It suggests the necessity of further research into oral discourse in educational contexts, particularly the types of student explanations and clarifications, to refine teaching and learning practices. This research investigates the discourse makers found in The Ron Clark Story movie. Discourse makers are words that link the speaker to what has been uttered previously. This can improve a speaker's ability to communicate clearly. This research analyzes the discourse makers found in every scene The Ron Clark Story movie. A qualitive descriptive method was used to analyze the collected data. The result of this study the discourse marker "and" is most often used in The Ron Clark Story movie. This paper analyses the advertising discourses about social commitment in Spanish. Businesses express trough them their values and describe their activity for helping in any social cause, such as environment, sustainable economy, decent jobs, or human rights. These are texts found on company websites and are usually longer than many other types of messages realised by any business. The argumentation is not aimed directly at sales, but at improving the public image of the company itself. This image-work in turn serves as an argument for users to trust the company. Due to this special argumentative activity, this research pursues to identify the main mechanisms of textual construction aimed at this persuasive purpose. To this end, a macrosyntax model is applied. This presupposes the existence of a discourse grammar and defines textual units, categories, and functions from a pragmatic approach. This model allows to explain the main discursive phenomena which create this type of advertising texts, such as a moderate density of information, a low hierarchisation of information, the use of topics, a tendency to express coordination or the abundant use of gerunds. During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with disabilities were confronted with ableist discourses that justified unfair policy measures. This study is concerned with the discourses recorded in a range of education documents, published during the pandemic within the Republic of Cyprus. It employs an interdisciplinary framework, informed by Critical Discourse Analysis, Inclusive Education, and Critical Disability Studies, to examine the powerful actors and the ideologies that influenced the formation of discourses. The paper undertakes a critical interpretation of the disability discourses developed in Cyprus during the pandemic, links this with other relevant research conducted in other European countries prior to and during the pandemic, and suggests policy actions/measures that value children with disabilities and their families. Summary: In the Brazilian Amazon region, social, economic, and political changing structures have increased the pressure on land, generating inequalities for the region's most vulnerable residents. Simultaneously, scientific knowledge production has increased and documented the region's different realities. This document presents a scientific discourse analysis of landuse change in the Amazonian region and its interaction with socio-environmental (in)justice, considering the pluriversal perspective. We respond to the main questions: Do hierarchies in scientific knowledge production contribute to silencing subaltern voices and hiding a pluriverse approach when writing about Amazonia land issues? And if so, how? A systematic literature review was conducted using the scientific dissemination platforms Scielo, Scopus, and WoS. The results show a disproportionate representation of some stakeholders, and some states are used as near-total representatives for the Amazonia region. Furthermore, consideration of pluriversal perspectives in the articles does not guarantee high sensibility for heterogeneity of local contexts or for making subaltern voices heard. Literary criticism is the analysis of the text's semantic layers based on theories that are mostly drawn from other fields of the humanities. The new historicism, which was established by Stephen Greenblatt in the late 1970s and early 1980s, is one of the most current theories in this area. Modern historicism holds that literature and history both have an impact on one another, in contrast to conventional historicism, which speaks of the one-sided influence of history on literature. Modern historians contend that literature does more than just reflect history; rather, the link between history and literature is dialectical rather than reflective. Based on current historicism, library, and document studies, and using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study has looked into and analyzed the story of Fereydoun and Zahak, and has offered a new interpretation of it. According to the study's findings, the conflict between the Iranian discourse and the non-Iranian discourse (Fereydoun and Kaveh) in this story is driven by power, which ultimately leads to the dominance of the Iranian discourse. The characters of this story are each representative of discourse in the story community. Iranian discourse is on the margins and out of power at first, while non-Iranian discourse is dominant and in power. However, by the end of the story, the situation has changed.
