The charge density of cellulose fibers is a key parameter in the papermaking systems, and this is particularly true for the Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) paper sizing. Zeta potential and cationic demand are often used to characterize these charges. Generally, a similar sizing performance would be obtained when the fibers with similar morphology and charge characteristics are used. However, in a mill trial, it was shown that three bleached birch pulp samples, with similar fiber morphology, and zeta potential, had different Alkyl Ketence Dimer (AKD) sizing behaviors. In this study, the surface charges of these pulp samples, measured using the poly electrolyte titration methods, were investigated. The results showed that lower sizing efficiency of fibers were due to their lower surface charges. It was concluded that the direct measurement of surface charge of cellulose fibers can be more appropriate to evaluate the AKD paper sizing efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extensive use of biocide surfactant benzalkonium chloride (BAC) during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has led to the buildup of this hazardous chemical in waste, surface and groundwater. e The study aims to elucidate whether various low-cost household materials are suitable, in their unmodified and untreated form, to effectively adsorb BAC from its aqueous solutions.. Additionally, if a proper adsorbent is identified, a description of the kinetics and thermodynamics of the process is also targeted. From among the five tested materials, a commercially available white household paper towel was chosen to best satisfy the criteria of low price, large availability, and standardization degree, as well as high adsorption capacity within a fairly short time window needed until equilibrium. Batch experiments were carried out with a commercial mixture of BAC-12 and BAC-14 within a temperature range of 18-45 degrees Celsius, and a 25-100 mg/g BAC/adsorbent initial mass ratio range, respectively. The overall process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic law, with an apparent activation energy of 73.35 KJ/mole. Both the Langmuir and the Redlich–Peterson isotherms describe the equilibrium data at 298 K well, with a Gibbs free energy of −20.64 KJ/mole. For the first time the feasibility of using an alkaline wastewater coming from the pulp and paper industry as an activator, partially (50 vol%) replacing commercial sodium hydroxide, in the production of cork-based activated carbons was evaluated. The activated carbons showed the highest value of specific surface area ever reported for cork-based activated carbons (1670 m 2 /g), surpassing several other commercial and waste-based ones. These eco-friendly cork and paper waste-based activated carbons were then evaluated as methylene blue adsorbent materials. The influence of contact time, methylene blue initial concentration and adsorbent amount on the methylene blue removal efficiency by the activated carbons was studied. Extremely fast (>99.9% removal in 5 min) and efficient methylene blue adsorption (uptake of 350 mg/g) by the cork and paper waste-based adsorbents was achieved, which demonstrates the huge potential of these innovative adsorbents. These activated carbons were produced using two unexplored industrial by-products (alkaline wastewater and cork) and, therefore, may be an inexpensive source of activated carbons, which can be used for the effective removal of dyes from wastewaters. Furthermore, despite the very large surface area and high removal efficiency this is not a nano material (being around 30–50 μm in size), its capabilities being due to its unique cork-derived microstructure, and hence it can be handled and removed/filtered much more easily than nanocarbons, and without any associated health or environmental risks. Herein, bifunctional two-dimensional copper-aluminum modified filter paper composite (2D-Cu/Al–C) was successfully prepared by simple calcination and showed ultrahigh adsorption performance and degradation potential. The adsorption removal of TC on 2D-Cu/Al–C all exceeded 92.2% under solution conditions of 10–200 mg/L TC, 100 mg/L 2D-Cu/Al–C, pH 8 and 298 K. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models better fitted the kinetic and isotherm data via spontaneous and exothermic process, and the maximum capacity of the 2D-Cu/Al–C was 2391.78 mg/g. Additionally, 2D-Cu/Al–C showed desired specific adsorption for TC (TC: 98.7%, norfloxacin: 5.8%, sulfamethoxazole: 2.1%, and ciprofloxacin: 1.8%) and it could effectively adsorbed TC even in the binary system (various coexisting ions or natural organic matter). After TC adsorbed on adsorbent was mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O by adding peroxydisulfate to generate high electrode potential radical in another limited systems, the 2D-Cu/Al–C still had ∼89.12% on TC removal (initial concentration of 50 mg/L) after five experimental cycles. Zeta potential, FT-IR and XPS results indicated that the multi-adsorption mechanism, including electrostatic interactions, complexation, and H-bonds, played a vital role in the fast and efficient adsorption process. Thus, the way of combining adsorption and regeneration via degradation are green, non-polluting strategy which are expected to be applied for water purification in future environmental remediation. The carbonization of lignocellulosic biomass with ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as an advantageous approach for the preparation of carbonaceous materials. The commonly used imidazolium and pyridinium based ILs have drawbacks such as toxicity, resistance to biodegradation, high cost and viscosity. These issues can be mitigated by diluting ILs with water, although excessive water content above 1 wt% can reduce the solubility of biomass. This research aims to investigate the potential of pretreating wastepaper with a "fully green" ILs, amino acid-based IL with high water content, followed by pyrolysis without IL, in enhancing the properties of biochar. For this purpose, the paper was treated with an aqueous solution of IL cysteine nitrate ([Cys][NO 3 ]), and the IL was not involved in the pyrolysis process to prevent the formation of secondary gaseous pollutants. The findings revealed that the hemicellulose and mineral filler in the paper were eliminated during pretreatment, leading to higher carbon content but lower oxygen content. As a result, the biochar exhibited micropores of 0.42 cm3g-1 and a specific surface area of 1011.21 m2 g−1. The biochar demonstrated high adsorption capacities for Cd2+, enrofloxacin, bisphenol A, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline, with values of 45.20 mg g−1, 49.82 mg g−1, 49.90 mg g−1, 49.88 mg g−1, and 49.65 mg g−1, respectively. The proposed mechanism for the adsorption of enrofloxacin by the biochar primarily involves physical adsorption such as pore filling and electrostatic interactions, along with chemical adsorption facilitated by graphitic nitrogen. The dynamic pore systems and high surface areas of flexible metal-organic framework materials make them excellent candidates to be used in different kinds of adsorption processes. However, the adsorption and desorption behaviors of therapeutic drugs on metal-organic frameworks in solution are not fully developed. Here, we systematically investigated the adsorption and desorption behaviors of a typical therapeutic drug, verapamil, over several Zr-based metal-organic frameworks [e.g., Zr-FUM, UiO-66(Zr), UiO-66(Zr)-NH2 and UiO-66(Zr)-2COOH] as well as ZrO2 in an acetonitrile solution by using paper spray mass spectrometry. In contrast to other materials, UiO-66(Zr)-2COOH demonstrated a superior adsorption performance to verapamil due to their strong acid-base and/or hydrogen-bond interactions, and the adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As verapamil-adsorbed materials were used for desorption experiments, ZrO2 demonstrated the most favorable desorption performance, whereas UiO-66(Zr)-2COOH yielded the poorest desorption capability. These Zr-based materials had also been coated at the surface with filter papers for the analysis of various drugs and proteins in the process of paper spray mass spectrometry. The results demonstrated that among the studied materials, ZrO2-coated paper gave the most favorable desorption performance as a pure drug solution, whereas the paper from UiO-66(Zr) demonstrated the optimal capability in the analyses of therapeutic drugs in a complex matrix (e.g., blood) and a protein (e.g., myoglobin). “Adsorption deinking” is a new concept for ink removal from suspensions using polymer particles instead of air bubbles (flotation) in a process with high efficiency, concerning the consumption of energy and water. We studied the influence of different papers and inks, of the deinking solution (compared with water), and of the duration of deinking. The process is characterized not only by the colour of polymer particles, but also by the properties in suspension such as charge, turbidity or particle size. Further it is shown, that dynamic surface tension is a useful tool to characterize not only the surfactant in suspension, but also its interaction with other substances (cellulose and ink). Based on surface science, adsorption of mineral oil, water, gas products (typified by CO2 and CH4), and acids (typified by formic acid) on meta-aramid insulation paper has been investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. When the adsorption process finishes, the free volume fraction in the crystalline region is very small owing to the stable molecular arrangement of fiber. In addition, the number of pores on the surface of the meta-aramid fiber and the pore size are small, and the stable configuration of hydrogen bonds plays an important role, so it is difficult for the mineral oil and aging products to enter the meta-aramid crystalline region. The irregular arrangement of molecules in the amorphous region means that it is easier for the mineral oil and aging products to enter the amorphous region than the crystalline region, and the influence of these substances on the amorphous region is greater than that on the crystalline region. The order of the adsorption strengths of the four types of aging products on meta-aramid fiber is formic acid > water > CO2 > CH4. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the acid and water contents in transformers with meta-aramid insulation paper as the solid insulation material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xylan is known as a strength-enhancing agent for paper. However, it is difficult to adsorb xylan onto cellulose fibers because it carries the same negative charge as fibers. Therefore, either cationization of xylan or addition of cationic polyelectrolyte is required to maximize the effect of xylan use. In this study, cationic polyelectrolyte was used to promote xylan adsorption onto cellulose fiber. The effect of the polyelectrolyte type on the successive adsorption of xylan and its influence on paper properties was examined. The mechanism for improving paper strength by xylan adsorption on polyelectrolyte pre-formed layers was investigated through the viscoelastic properties of the preformed layers on model cellulose films using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D). Both tensile and tear indices of paper were improved with the adsorption of xylan onto pulp fibers. It was suggested that the adsorbed xylan onto the polyelectrolyte preformed layer formed a complex layer that gave rise to a large contact area between xylan and fiber. The increase in the physical strength of paper depended on the structure of the polyelectrolyte-xylan layers. Highly charged cationic polyelectrolytes that form a flat adsorption layer gave a relatively lower increase in physical properties. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered an effective adsorbent for VOCs adsorption due to their excellent physical properties. But the adsorption properties of CNTS are greatly weakened due to the agglomeration effect. As a new type of structural material, microfiber composite can effectively solve this problem. In this work, camphor was used as the precursor to growing carbon nanotubes directly on the surface of paper-like stainless steel fibers (PSSF) by chemical vapor deposition, and the microfiber composite carbon nanotube membrane was prepared. The effects of growth time, temperature and flow rate of carrier gas on the growth of carbon nanotubes were discussed. The mechanism of mass transfer enhancement of the adsorption process of toluene by microfiber composites was investigated by constructing a mixed fixed bed of carbon nanotubes and composites. Compared with the structured bed of 3 cm CNTs, the length of unused bed (LUB) of 1.5 cm CNTs+ 1.5 cm CNTs/PSSF decreased by 0.209 cm, and the bed utilization ∆Z increased from 59.36 % to 66.33 %. Chitosan/polycaprolactam (PA6) nanofibrous filter paper (NFP) was prepared by electrospinning technique. Characterization with Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that there was weak interaction (hydrogen bonds) between PA6 and chitosan, and the average diameter of the composite nanofibers decreased as the chitosan content was increased. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on the NFP via filtration (114.7 mg g −1 ) was much higher than that via static adsorption (81.7 mg g −1 ) and shaking adsorption (80.7 mg g −1 ). Because the Cr(VI)-containing solution was forced to flow through the whole membrane in filtration, the chelation sites inside the membrane could be exploited, leading to the enhancement of the Cr(VI) adsorption. The hydrogen bonds between chitosan and PA6 could enhance the mechanical strength and the acid fastness of the NFP. Therefore, the NFP desorbed by H 2 SO 4 can be well reinstated, and the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) decreased slightly (only 17.9%) after three filtration cycles. On the basis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the possible mechanism for the Cr(VI) removal was that Cr(VI) was initially adsorbed on the NFP due to the electrostatic attraction, and subsequently reduced to the less toxic form Cr(III) by the amino groups of chitosan. The Ni–zero-valent iron magnetic biochar composites (Ni–ZVI-MBC) were synthesized from paper mill sludge and used as an adsorbent for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP) from the synthetic and real paper mill effluent. The synthesized Ni–ZVI-MBC was characterized and analyzed for the stability of Ni and ZVI particles in the biochar matrix. The Ni–ZVI-MBC involves simultaneous adsorption and dechlorination mechanism resulting in higher PCP removal efficiency. The presence of Ni as a catalyst in Ni–ZVI-MBC enhances the dechlorination rate and the adsorption of PCP by preventing the accumulation of PCP in the biochar matrix. The effect of operating parameters (solution pH, Ni loading, initial PCP concentration in the solution and temperature) on adsorption and dechlorination efficiency was studied. Membrane fouling is the major factor limiting the wider applicability of the membrane-based technologies in water treatment and in separation and purification processes of biorefineries, pulp and paper industry, food industry and other sectors. Endeavors to prevent and minimize fouling requires a deep understanding on the fouling mechanisms and their relative effects. In this study, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption/desorption technique was applied to get an insight into pore-level membrane fouling phenomena occurring in ultrafiltration of wood-based streams. The fouling of commercial polysulfone and polyethersulfone membranes by black liquor, thermomechanical pulping process water and pressurized hot-water extract was investigated with BET analysis, infrared spectroscopy, contact angle analysis and pure water permeability measurements. Particular emphasis was paid to the applicability of BET for membrane fouling characterization. The formation of a fouling layer was detected as an increase in cumulative pore volumes and pore areas in the meso-pores region. Pore blocking was seen as disappearance of meso-pores and micro-pores. The results indicate that the presented approach of using BET analysis combined with IR spectroscopy can provide complementary information revealing both the structure of fouling layer and the chemical nature of foulants. A hybrid montmorillonite (Mt)-rich/chitosan composite (MCC) with high adsorption performance was synthesized for the decolorization of water used in the joss paper process. The performance was reported in terms of the dye removal. The composite expressed higher performance than chitosan or Mt-rich clay, respectively. The optimum condition for complete dye removal was achieved when using at least 0.6 g of the composite over a wide pH range (3–10) and initial dye concentration (10–100 mg L−1). The composite showed good reusability without the requirement of regeneration, adsorbing the dye completely for up to eight successive cycles of adsorption (>1.33 gdye gMCC−1). Thermodynamic analyses revealed the degree of spontaneity and the endothermic adsorption process. From the isotherm studies, the Koble–Corrigan isotherm model fitted very well to the experimental data, revealing that the composite had a heterogeneous surface with various active sites to adsorb the dye molecules. This also evidenced the synergistic electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction between the dye and the composite. The pseudo-second-order model best explained the kinetic rate of adsorption. From evaluation of the adsorption process using the Webber and Morris equation and Boyd model, the rate-limiting step consisted of film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effluent reuse is a common practice for sustainable industrial water use. Salt removal is usually carried out by a combination of membrane processes with a final reverse osmosis (RO). However, the presence of silica limits the RO efficiency due to its high scaling potential and the difficulty of cleaning the fouled membranes. Silica adsorption has many advantages compared to coagulation and precipitation at high pHs: pH adjustment is not necessary, the conductivity of treated waters is not increased, and there is no sludge generation. Therefore, this study investigates the feasibility of using pseudoboehmite and its calcination product (γ-Al2O3) for silica adsorption from a paper mill effluent. The effect of sorbent dosage, pH, and temperature, including both equilibrium and kinetics studies, were studied. γ-Al2O3 was clearly more efficient than pseudoboehmite, with optimal dosages around 2.5–5 g/L vs. 7.5–15 g/L. The optimum pH is around 8.5–10, which fits well with the initial pH of the effluent. The kinetics of silica adsorption is fast, especially at high dosages and temperatures: 80–90% of the removable silica is removed in 1 h. Adsorption cooling and desalination systems have a distinct advantage over other systems that use low‐grade waste heat near ambient temperature. Since improving their performance, including reliability and failure prediction, is challenging, developing an efficient diagnostic system is of great practical significance. The paper introduces artificial intelligence (AI) and an automated machine learning approach (AutoML) in a real‐life application for a computational diagnostic system of existing adsorption cooling and desalination facilities. A total of 1769 simulated data points containing data indicating a failure status are applied to develop a comprehensive AI‐based Diagnostic (AID) system covering a wide range of 42 input parameters. The paper introduces a conditional monitoring system for adsorption cooling and desalination systems. The novelty of the presented study mainly consists of two aspects. First, the intelligent system predicts the health or failure states of various components in a complex three‐bed adsorption chiller installation using the extensive input data sets of 42 different operating parameters. The developed AID expert tool, based on selecting the best from 42 models generated by the DataRobot platform, was validated on the complex, existing three‐bed adsorption chiller. The AID system correctly identified healthy and failure states in various installation components. The developed expert system is very efficient (AUC = 0.988, RMSE = 0.20, LogLoss = 0.14) in predicting emergency states. A novel microporous ZIF-67 membrane coating on paper-like stainless steel fibers (ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF) was successfully synthesized by a wet layup papermaking-sintering method followed by the seed-induced growth method. The effects of key factors such as crystallization temperature, synthesis time and Hmim/Co2+ (2-methylimidazole/cobalt chloride) molar ratio on the morphology structure of the samples were studied by the modern characterization techniques including SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, BET, FTIR and TGA, respectively. The experimental result indicated that the as-synthesized ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF was extremely compact with the average membrane thickness of 4.8 μm. And the sample exhibited high BET surface area (440.9 m2/g), uniform pore size (1.881 nm) and large pore volume (0.2096 cm3/g). The adsorption breakthrough experiment of toluene was performed on different bed reactors filled with ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF and granular ZSM-5 zeolites, respectively. The experiment data was well fitted by Yoon–Nelson model, where the values of rate constant in the fixed bed with ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF increased by 32.2% compared with that of commercial ZSM-5 zeolites at the flow rate of 100 mL/min. And the bed pressure drop and length of unused bed (LUB) were dramatically reduced by 39.6% and 16.8% in 3 cm ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF fixed bed. In conclusion, mass transfer efficiency was significantly enhanced based the structured ZIF-67 membrane/PSSF fixed bed, and this new material is a promising adsorptive material for VOCs removal. In the last decade, biochar application research has emerged as a hot topic in water treatment studies, which made biochar adsorption one of the primary wastewater treatment strategies. This paper presents a global bibliometric analysis of 2673 publications from the Web of Science database, spanning 2011–2022. For a comprehensive understanding of the research status and trends in biochar adsorption for wastewater treatment, the advanced quantitative and visual analysis tools (i.e., CiteSpace and ArcGIS) were employed. The results showed that China emerged as the leading country with the most published articles. The key research area is on the magnetic adsorption of biochar in wastewater. The articles summarized in the review demonstrated unequivocally that biochar can treat a wide range of wastewater even though the adsorption mechanisms of biochar on heavy metals, inorganic salts and organic pollutants in wastewater are not entirely consistent. The review further analyzes the factors affecting the performance of biochar in adsorbing pollutants from wastewater and the improvement measures of biochar functional characteristics, proposing the future research directions focusing on the improvement of the adsorption capacity of biochar products. The information synthesis and discussion would provide valuable insights on the historical, current, and future trends in biochar research, beneficial to solve the practical problems of water pollution and improve the quality of the environment. Copper is a major problem in industrial wastewater streams, seriously affecting the quality of potential drinking water. Several approaches, including continuous membrane processes or batch-wise application of adsorbents, are in use to tackle this problem. Unfortunately, these processes suffer from their particular drawbacks, such as low permeance or disposal of saturated adsorbents. However, a combination of these processes could constitute a step towards a more efficient copper removal solution. Here, we present a nanopaper ion-exchanger prepared from cellulose nanofibrils produced from fibre sludge, a paper industry waste stream, for the efficient, continuous removal of copper from aqueous solutions. This nanopaper ion-exchanger comprises phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils that were processed into nanopapers by papermaking. The performance of these phosphorylated nanopaper membranes was determined with respect to their rejection of copper and permeance. It was shown that this new type of nanopaper is capable of rejecting copper ions during a filtration process by adsorption. Results suggest that functional groups on the surface of the nanopapers contribute to the adsorption of copper ions to a greater extent than phosphate groups within the bulk of the nanopaper. Moreover, we demonstrated that those nanopaper ion-exchangers could be regenerated and reused and that in the presence of calcium ions, the adsorption capacity for copper was only slightly reduced. Paper packaging materials are widely used as sustainable green materials in food packaging. The production or processing of paper materials is conducted in an environment that contains organic chlorides; therefore, potential food safety issues exist. In this study, the adsorption behavior of organic chlorides on paper materials was investigated. Chloropropanol, which has been extensively studied in the field of food safety, was employed as the research object. We studied the adsorption mechanism of chloropropanol on a crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) model. The results demonstrated that physical adsorption was the prevailing process, and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds acted as the driving force for adsorption. The adsorption effect assumed greatest significance under neutral and weakly alkaline conditions. A good linear relationship between the amount of chloropropanol adsorbed and the amount of CNC used was discovered. Thus, the findings of this study are crucial in monitoring the safety of products in systems containing chloropropanol and other chlorinated organic substances. A research on the preparation of Carbon Waste Powder, CWP, was conducted and made from carbon rod waste which was extracted from used zinc-carbon batteries. This research was an effort to overcome environmental problem caused by battery waste by converting into adsorbent for methyl orange (MO) that frequently used by textile industries. The prepared powder was then analyzed to understand its characteristic peaks, crystallinity, and to compare the properties with other carbonaceous forms, i.e. a commercial Carbon Paper (CP), and a commercial meso-carbon micro-beads (MCMB). The analysis found that CWP is dominated by graphitic carbon. An adsorption experiment was then conducted to study their adsorption ability to methyl orange solution. The result found that those three carbonaceous materials have the ability to adsorb methyl orange with different activities. MCMB has the highest adsorption capacity of 0.197 mg.g-1. Meanwhile, CWP and CP show adsorption capacity of 0.066 mg.g-1 and 0.062 mg.g-1, respectively. Methyl orange adsorption on CWP and CP were under second order, which means the adsorption could be four times faster as the MO solution doubled. Moreover, the rate constant of MO adsorption on CWP is 8×10-4 min-1, which was higher than the rate constant of MO adsorption on CP. In this paper, coal measure kaolin after flotation decarburization was made into an adsorbent by ball milling and acid modification to absorb methylene blue in water, achieving the treatment of waste with waste. The objective of this paper is to expand the application of coal measure kaolin, reduce its stock, and lower the raw material cost of adsorbents while treating wastewater containing methylene blue. The optimum milling time, acid boiling conditions, and adsorption conditions were investigated. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was investigated by kinetic calculation. The results show that the optimum milling time is 7 h. Relatively good acid modification conditions include a boiling temperature of 100 °C, a stirring time of 135 min, a stirring speed of 1000 r·min−1, and a concentration of hydrochloric acid of 8 mol·L−1. When 0.05 g of flotation kaolin adsorbent was used to adsorb the solution with pH 12 and a methylene blue concentration of 100 mg·L−1, the optimal adsorption conditions were a 38.05 °C adsorption temperature, a 160 r·min−1 stirring speed, and a 31.02 min stirring time. Under these optimal conditions, the adsorption quantity reached 39.92 mg·g−1. The adsorption process involves physical adsorption and spontaneous adsorption. The optimization of the thermal treatment of cationic starch in the paper industry offers the opportunity to reduce the energy consumption of this process. Four different industrially relevant cationic starches, varying in source, cationization method and degree of substitution were treated by a steam-jet cooking procedure, comparable to industrially employed starch cooking processes. The influence of the starch properties and cooking parameters on the adsorption behavior of the starches on cellulosic pulp was investigated. The adsorbed amount was affected by the cooking temperature and the type of starch. For some starch grades, a cooking temperature of 115 °C can be employed to achieve sufficient starch retention on the pulp fibers. The paper presents an innovative concept of the fluidization of an adsorption bed carried out under low-pressure conditions. Additionally, different bed mixes were used to test the effects of the bed composition on fluidization. Fluidization was caused by the pressure difference and the velocity of the flowing water vapor. These features make the research presented in this article significantly different from other studies known in the literature and constitute the main novelty of the paper. Silica gel with a particle diameter of 200–250 µm (Geldart group B) with aluminum and carbon nanotube additives was fluidized under reduced pressure (10–25 mbar). The pressure difference results in the flow of water vapor and, consequently, induces fluidization. The pressure in the evaporator was approx. 10 mbar, while in the reaction chamber it was approx. 25 mbar. The pressure difference of about 10–15 mbar allows for a flow of water vapor between the evaporator and the reaction chamber. During the tests, the pressures, temperatures and mass were measured. To adopt cleaner production technology of photo-catalysis in papermaking industry and improve environmental sustainability, it is essential to understand the impact of ambient humidity on photo-catalytic degradations of gaseous pollutants. This study used TiO 2 colloid as catalyst to study the effects of ambient humidity (30–60%) on the photo-catalytic degradations of formaldehyde (HCHO), benzene (C 6 H 6), and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) generated by papermaking industry. Via adsorption behavior simulations, using density functional theory (DFT) and catalytic reaction mechanisms, the effects of humidity were further investigated. The following results were found: (1) With increasing humidity, the degradation of HCHO was inhibited, because the ambient H 2 O content exceeded the demand for hydroxyl radicals produced by H 2 O, which led to competitive adsorption. (2) For C 6 H 6 , an optimum humidity of 40% was identified during the degradation process, which could be attributed to the improved catalytic reaction and the subsequent excessive H 2 O content. (3) For H 2 S, unlike the negative action for HCHO and the first positive and then negative actions for C 6 H 6 , with increasing humidity, the H 2 S degradation was promoted. This indicated that the large demand for hydroxyl radicals produced by H 2 O promoted the H 2 S catalytic reaction. In order to achieve the purpose of efficiently removing lead and cadmium as the main heavy metals from wastewater, this paper explores the adsorption properties of cadmium ions and lead ions on biochar under different modified conditions prepared from corn stalks as raw materials and potassium phosphate as surface modifiers. Before preparing biochar (BC), the mass ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 (corn stalks to potassium phosphate) were used for pre-modification, and the oxygen-restricted pyrolysis processes of 350 °C, 550 °C and 750 °C were used for treatment. The study discussed the individual and composite adsorption effects of biochar on Pb2+ and Cd2+ under different conditions. The experimental results show that phosphorus modification has changed the physical and chemical properties of the original biochar. Among them, the biochar (2PBC550) with an impregnation ratio of 1:2 and a pyrolysis temperature of 550 °C (2PBC550) exhibits excellent adsorption properties. When the pH of the simulated wastewater is 5 and the amount of adsorbent is 30 mg·L−1, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+ and Cd2+ is 145.48 mg·g−1 and 14.533 mg·g−1, respectively, which are 6.46 times and 3.67 times of the original biochar. The Pb2+ and Cd2+ adsorption data of 2PBC550 fit well with the quasi-secondary dynamics and Langmuir isothermal models, indicating that the adsorption process is controlled by single-layer chemical adsorption. In the composite metal system of Pb2+ and Cd2+, 2PBC550 exhibits a stronger affinity for Pb2+ than Cd2+. Through the analysis of characterization methods such as SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS, it is proved that the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by 2PBC550 is due to precipitation, complexation and π electron interaction. The long-term sustainability of the global water supply, with a paramount emphasis on cleanliness and safety, stands as a formidable challenge in our modern era. In response to this pressing issue, adsorption techniques have emerged as pivotal and widely recognized solutions for the removal of hazardous pollutants, with a particular emphasis on lead adsorption from wastewater. This comprehensive review explores the relentless advancements made in the adsorption domain, highlighting innovations using separation and purification techniques that surpass traditional metal oxide-based adsorbents. Of particular note is the growing exploration of alternative materials, such as starch, chitosan, nanoscale structures like zeolites and metal-organic frameworks, magnetic materials, and carbon-based substances for the development of inorganic adsorbents. These materials, with their remarkable capacity for nanoscale structural adjustment, possess extraordinary capabilities for effective contaminant removal, facilitating swift water purification. The literature survey for this review was conducted using the Google Scholar engine, with "adsorbents for lead remediation" as the starting keywords, resulting in approximately 6000 papers. The search was refined to focus on the last three years and specifically targeted review papers which are most relevant to lead remediation. More than 100 papers were analysed to investigate various techniques, surface modifications, and adsorbent materials for managing inorganic pollutants in water. This review also illuminates research limitations, with a specific focus on starch-based adsorbents in lead remediation. As we progress towards practical commercial applications, this review identifies challenges associated with the development of inorganic adsorbents and provides invaluable insights into future prospects. Surface modification emerges as a promising path, with the potential to substantially enhance adsorption capacity, potentially doubling or even quadrupling it. Moreover, the adsorbents demonstrate impressive regenerative capabilities, maintaining up to 90% regeneration efficiency after multiple cycles. In conclusion, starch-based adsorbents show considerable potential as effective agents for lead purification from aquatic environments. Generating sustainable electricity from ambient humidity and natural evaporation has attracted tremendous interest recently as it requires no extra mechanical energy input and is deployable across all weather and geography conditions. Here, we present a device prototype for enhanced power generation from ambient humidity. This prototype uses both heterogenous materials assembled from a LiCl-loaded cellulon paper to facilitate moisture adsorption and a carbon-black-loaded cellulon paper to promote water evaporation. Exposing such a centimeter-sized device to ambient humidity can produce voltages of around 0.78 V and a current of around 7.5 μA, both of which can be sustained for more than 10 days. The enhanced electric output and durability are due to the continuous water flow that is directed by evaporation through numerous, negatively charged channels within the cellulon papers. The voltage and current exhibit an excellent scaling behavior upon device integration to sufficiently power commercial devices including even cell phones. The results open a promising prospect of sustainable electricity generation based on a synergy between spontaneous moisture adsorption and water evaporation. The enhanced coalbed methane recovery using CO2 injection (CO2-ECBM) is widely proposed as a way of achieving the energy transition and reducing atmospheric CO2 in areas such as the Lorrain basin in France, where heavy industry is responsible for huge CO2 emissions and coal mines have been closed for more than a decade. This paper deals with the feasibility of extracting methane from the Lorraine basin using CO2-ECBM by comparing data from sorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analyses and breakthrough curves for two coal samples. One is bituminous (Box 18), from Folschviller (France) and is compared with another sub-bituminous (TH01) from La Houve (France), which is used as a reference because it was identified as a good candidate for CO2-ECBM in a previous research program. The quantities of adsorbed gases (CO2/CH4) obtained by sorption isotherms, thermogravimetry and CO2 breakthrough curves showed that Box 18 adsorbs more CO2 and CH4 than TH01 due to its higher porosity and good affinity for gases (CO2/CH4). Tόth model fits the experimental CH4 and CO2 adsorption isotherms better, reflecting the fact that the adsorption surface of the coals studied is heterogeneous. Adsorption enthalpies obtained by calorimetry indicated physisorption for gas-coal interactions, with higher values for CO2 than for CH4. Thermogravimetric analyses and breakthrough curves carried out at up to 50% relative humidity showed that the adsorption capacity of CO2 decreases with increasing temperature and the presence of water, respectively. The compilation of these experimental data explained the adsorption process of the studied coals and revealed their advantages for CO2-ECBM. The recovery of valuable gold from wastewater is of great interest because of the widespread use of the precious metal in various fields and the pollution generated by gold-containing wastes in water. In this paper, a water-insoluble cross-linked adsorbent material (TE) based on cyanuric chloride (TCT) and ethylenediamine (EDA) was designed and used for the adsorption of Au(III) from wastewater. It was found that TE showed extremely high selectivity (D = 49,213.46) and adsorption capacity (256.19 mg/g) for Au(III) under acidic conditions. The adsorption rate remained above 90% eVen after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting that physical adsorption with a multilayer molecular overlay dominates. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism was obtained by DFT calculation and XPS analysis, and the adsorption mechanism was mainly the electrostatic interaction and electron transfer between the protonated N atoms in the adsorbent (TE) and AuCl4−, which resulted in the redox reaction. The whole adsorption process was the result of the simultaneous action of physical and chemical adsorption. This paper proposes a new, highly effective fluorescence test for Cr(VI) detection. This method utilizes a hydrogel composed of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N–CQDs), and poly(co-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) (AMPS). The N–CQDs were successfully synthesized using a simple microwave method, and then conjugated with HEC and AMPS. The higher adsorption (99.41%) and higher reduction rate in H1 likely stems from both the presence of N–CQDs (absent in HB) and their increased free functional groups (compared to H2/H3, where N–CQDs block them). This facilitates the release (desorption) of Cr(VI) from the hydrogels, making it more available for reduction to the less toxic Cr(III). The fluorescent brightness of the HEC-N–CQDs-g-poly(AMPS) hydrogel increases gradually when Cr(VI) is added in amounts ranging from 15 to 120 mg/L. The fluorescent enhancement of the HEC-N–CQDs-g-poly(AMPS) hydrogel appeared to exhibit a good linear relationship with the 15–120 mg of the Cr(VI) concentration, with a detection limit of 0.0053 mg/L, which is lower than the standard value published by WHO. Our study found that the HEC-N–CQDs-g-poly(AMPS) hydrogel served effectively as a fluorescent probe for Cr(VI) detection in aqueous solutions, demonstrating high sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

More than 70% of the potash fertilizer globally is produced by the froth flotation process, in which 4-dodecylmorpholine (DMP) serves as a reverse flotation agent. As the potash fertilizer production rapidly rises, the increased DMP levels in discharged brine pose a threat to the production of high-value chemicals. In this paper, composite particles of basic magnesium sulfate@TiO2 (BMS@TiO2) were prepared using a simple and mild loading method. These particles were utilized for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP in brine. Compared with normal powdered materials, the granular BMS@TiO2 in this study can be easily separated from liquid, and the degradation intermediates will not enter the brine without causing secondary pollution. BMS@TiO2 consists of 5·1·7 phase (5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O) whisker clusters embedding 2.3% TiO2. The adsorption equilibrium of DMP on BMS@TiO2 particles was achieved through hydrogen bonding and pore interception with the adsorption capacity of approximately 5 mg g−1 after 6 h. The photodegradation efficiency of DMP adsorbed on BMS@TiO2 reached about 92% within 16 h, which is compared with that of pure TiO2 nanoparticles. Additionally, excellent stability and recyclability of BMS@TiO2 were also observed in five cycle tests of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP, and the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways and mechanism of DMP are proposed following molecular electrostatic potential analysis. In recent years, atmospheric composite pollution has become increasingly serious, and accelerating VOC governance has become the focus of and difficulty in atmospheric governance. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) come from a wide range of sources, and industrial sources are the main source of anthropogenic VOC emissions in China. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a multi-template molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) to target and extract naproxen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil, and efavirenz from wastewater bodies. A bulk polymerization procedure was used to synthesize the MIP and non-imprinted polymer (NIP). The specific recognition sites for each target were obtained through the removal of the imprinted targeted compounds. The interaction of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) compounds with the MIP was studied under various conditions such as pH, mass, concentration, and time factors. The results demonstrated the optimum conditions were 55 mg of MIP, pH 7.0, a concentration of 5 mg L−1, and a contact time of 10 min. For every compound studied, the extraction efficiencies for ARVs and NSAIDs in aqueous solutions was >96%. The adsorption capacity for the MIP was >0.91 mg·g−1. Adsorption obeys a second-order rate, and the Freundlich model explains the adsorption isotherm data. This study demonstrated that the synthesized multi-template MIP has huge potential to be employed for the removal of ARVs and NSAIDs from the environment as well as in drug purification or recovery processes. SO2F2 and SOF2 are the main components from the decomposition of insulation gas SF6. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) has been acknowledged as an accurate sensing technique. Polar material adsorption for SO2F2 and SOF2 in the photoacoustic gas cell of PAS may affect detection efficiency. In this paper, the optical gas-cell dynamic adsorptions of four different materials and the detection effects on SO2F2 and SOF2 are theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. The materials, including grade 304 stainless steel (SUS304), grade 6061 aluminum alloy (Al6061), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDC), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), were applied inside the optical gas cell. The results show that, compared with metallic SUS304 and Al6061, plastic PVDC and PTFE would reduce the gas adsorption of SO2F2 and SOF2 by 10 to 20% and shorten the response time during gas exchange. The complete gas defusing period in the experiment was about 30 s. The maximum variations of the 90% rising time between the different adsorption materials were approximately 3 s for SO2F2 and 6 s for SOF2, while the generated photoacoustic magnitudes were identical. With the continuous emission of greenhouse gases, the greenhouse effect is becoming more and more serious. CO2, CH4, and N2O are three typical greenhouse gases, and in order to limit their emissions, it is imperative that they are accurately monitored. In this paper, the doping behavior of Ti on the surface of HfSe2 is investigated, based on the first-nature principle. Additionally, the parameters of adsorption energy and the transfer charges of Ti−HfSe2 for CO2, CH4, and N2O are calculated and compared, while the sensing characteristics of Ti−HfSe2 are analyzed. The results show that the structure is most stable when Ti is located above the lower-layer Se atom. The CO2 and N2O adsorption systems with large adsorption energies and transfer charges are a chemical adsorption, while the CH4 system is a physical adsorption with small adsorption energies and transfer charges. In addition, Ti−HfSe2 has a good sensitivity and recovery time for CO2 at 298 K, which is feasible for industrial application. In this paper, the reported MOF ([Co(bimip)(H2O)0.5]·0.5H2O) was employed in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, antibacterial, and dye adsorption experiments. The photocatalytic activity of the MOF for CO2 reduction was systematically investigated. The high average CO generation rate of 3421.59 μmol·g−1·h−1 after 12 h confirms the efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction ability of the MOF. At the same time, the MOF can completely inhibit the growth of S. aureus and C. albicans within 24 h when its concentration reaches 400 μg/mL and 500 μg/mL, respectively. Large molecules of dyes or other substances can act as nano-adsorbents in aqueous surfactant solutions and, being coated with surfactant molecules, they resemble surfactant micelles with a solubilizate. These micelle-like particles were called protomicelles (or, more precisely, adsorption protomicelles, as in this paper). Their formation does not require a critical micelle concentration (CMC) and begins immediately when a surfactant is added to a solution. In this spectrophotometric study of Nile red (NR) in aqueous solutions of nonanoic acid (NOA), the first case where protomicelles were more important than micelles was demonstrated. It was shown that NR solubilization in both premicellar and micellar solutions proceeds through protomicelles rather than through NOA micelles. In the theoretical part of the paper, on the basis of the chemical potential of the nano-adsorbent, it was proved that the addition of a surfactant to a solution always increases the solubility of the nano-adsorbent. The dependence of adsorption on the curvature of the nano-adsorbent surface was considered, and it was shown that the adsorption equations for flat surfaces are applicable to curved surfaces with high accuracy. This paper describes a comparative study of the adsorption of methylparaben onto commercial activated carbon and olive stones activated by calcination at 300 °C and treatment with 1 M HCl. The influence of the initial concentration of methylparaben, adsorbent dose, stirring speed and pH on the adsorption capacity of methylparaben on both adsorbents was studied. To find out the isotherm model, the kinetic model and the mechanism that best describe the adsorption process on each adsorbent, the experimental equilibrium data were analyzed using six isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, Temkin, Jovanovic and Dubinin–Radushkevich), and the experimental kinetic data were analyzed using four kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich and Avrami) and two mechanistic models (Weber–Morris and Boyd). For both adsorbents, the Langmuir model best describes the adsorption equilibrium, the kinetics of the process follow a pseudo-first-order model and boundary layer diffusion is the step that mainly controls the adsorption process. The adsorption capacity of methylparaben on activated carbon is about four times higher than that of activated olive stones. The addition of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide to both adsorbents increases their methylparaben adsorption capacity, to a greater extent in the case of graphene oxide, being that increase more important in activated carbon than in activated olive stones. Adsorption systems are alternatives to compressor cooling systems. Apart from many advantages, these systems are characterized by low COP and SCP parameters. One of the most promising options to improve the performance of adsorption chillers is the replacement of the stationary bed with a fluidized one. A fluidized bed significantly increases the heat and mass transfer within the bed, enables better contact between gas and solid phases, and results in the proper mixing of adsorbent particles. This paper presents the possibility of using fluidized beds in adsorption chillers. This paper shows the results of CFD numerical modelling of the operation of a fluidized bed for an adsorption chiller and simulations of the bed temperature profiles during the adsorption and desorption processes of sorbent in a fluidized bed. Adsorption cooling technology is a promising alternative to replace conventional solutions. However, adsorption chillers still need to be improved in terms of performance parameters. One of the most important factors affecting their efficiency is the characteristics of the adsorbent, which should have the highest adsorption capacity and enable efficient heat transport in the bed. The objective of this paper is to present current developments in the field of composite sorbents with silica gel matrix as modern and very promising materials and then perform a detailed analysis of them. The paper summarises the methods of synthesis of composite sorbents and the current knowledge concerning these materials. The analysis focuses on a comparison of the available data, particular taking into account the types of matrixes, so that the analysis provides a clear and qualitative basis for further research. As a result of exploring the state of the art, this subject is found to be insufficiently described; therefore, these materials are comprehensively analysed in terms of their properties and the impact of their use on the COP (coefficient of performance) and SCP (specific cooling power) of adsorption chillers. This Special Issue includes 12 research papers on the development of various materials for adsorbing different contaminants in water, such as Sb, Cr(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), fluorine, phenol, dyes (indigo carmine, Congo red, methylene blue, and crystal violet), and drugs (dlevofloxacin, captopril, and diclofenac, and paracetamol). The commercial, natural, and synthetic materials used as adsorbents comprise commercial activated carbon, natural clay and montmorillonite, biosorbent based on sugarcane bagasse or algal, graphene oxide, graphene oxide-based magnetic nanomaterial, mesoporous Zr-G-C3N4 nanomaterial, nitrogen-doped core–shell mesoporous carbonaceous nano-sphere, magnetic Fe-C-N composite, polyaniline-immobilized ZnO nanorod, and hydroxy-iron/acid–base-modified sepiolite composite. Various operational conditions are evaluated under batch adsorption experiments, such as pH, NaCl, solid/liquid ratio, stirring speed, contact time, solution temperature, initial adsorbate concentration. The re-usability of laden materials is evaluated through adsorption–desorption cycles. Adsorption kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and mechanisms are studied and discussed. A fluorescent porous organic polymer (FPOP) with strong fluorescence and tunable emission colors, was synthesized through a simple cost-effective method via Scholl coupling reaction. Experiments proved the stability and excellent detection and adsorption ability, and microporous nature of the material. Luminescence of FPOP was quenched when addition of nitroaromatic compounds. The properties along with large-scale and low-cost preparation make these FPOP potential candidates for fluorescence detection of nitroaromatic compounds. Additionally, FPOP shows higher adsorption capacity and rate than other reported adsorbents, and has the possibility of being an effective adsorbent for industrial usage. Moreover, a fluorescent test paper was further developed and is found to be sensitive to 10–8 M level, complete with a rapid response time and visual detection. This newly developed strategy may open up an avenue for exploring porous polymers, particularly those with a strong fluorescence, for the large-scale fabrication of FPOP for various advanced applications. In this paper, we studied the scandium adsorption from aqueous solutions on the surface of low-temperature-activated alumina products (GDAH). The GDAH samples are industrially manufactured, coming from the Bayer production cycle of the Sierra Leone bauxite as aluminium hydroxide, and further, by drying, milling, classifying and thermally treating up to dehydroxilated alumina products at low temperature. All experiments related to hydroxide aluminium activation were conducted at temperature values of 260, 300 and 400 °C on samples having the following particle sizes: <10 µm, 20 µm, <45 µm and <150 µm, respectively. The low-temperature-activated alumina products were characterised, and the results were published in our previous papers. In this paper, research on pesticide adsorption mechanism of corn straw biochar based on KOH thermal activation is carried out. In this paper, corn stalks and pine needles are used as raw materials for preparing biomass charcoal, and biochar is prepared at temperatures of 200°C, 400°C, and 600°C. This paper uses thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, electron microscopy scanning, aperture measurement, infrared spectroscopy, and other characterization techniques to analyze the structure and properties of biochar in detail. Moreover, this paper uses batch method to select different organic pesticides diuron and carbaryl to test their adsorption performance. This article discusses the relationship between the adsorption mechanism and structural characteristics of biochar for organic pollutants. In addition, this paper studies the adsorption mechanism of diuron and carbaryl in the loess by adding exogenous biochar to the loess. Finally, this article analyzes the impact of the addition of biochar on the environmental behavior of diesel-contaminated loess adsorption of organic pollutants. This paper studies the role of KOH thermally activated corn stover biochar in agricultural adsorption, and verifies the reliability of the method proposed in this paper through experimental studies.
