The European cultural heritage represents one of the concerns of the European community that was taken into consideration when it comes to express the development of the international relations among its member states, but also in increasing the awareness of the importance of cultural diversity. At EU level, were developed some initiatives regarding the cooperation between the member states in the cultural field, one of the most important being the creation of the European digital heritage, one of the concerns of the European Commission. This considers the development of European policies in this field, as well as their financing in each member state of the European Union, for easier access to information on cultural heritage, but also the preservation of the European digital heritage as a whole. This paper addresses the digitization of cultural heritage from European perspective, while analyzing the Romanian national framework regarding digitization of the cultural heritage and the way that the Romanian authorities are involved in this process. The scope of this paper is also to identify good practices that may be successfully implemented at the national level. Also, the paper approaches the concept of national cultural heritage vs European cultural heritage, from the perspective of preserving the national identity of the member states. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Grand Canal of China has a rich intangible cultural heritage along its route. The intangible cultural heritage of folk songs is an important representative. The study of its distribution characteristics and influencing factors is of practical and social significance for promoting the protection and development of intangible cultural heritage in relevant areas and the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt. This paper uses the theories of musicology, geography, sociology, data statistical analysis and spatial analysis to analyze the distribution pattern of intangible cultural heritage items in the Grand Canal basin from the dimensions of geographical space and folk song genre, and from the perspective of natural and social conditions. The results show that the spatial distribution of folk songs in the Grand Canal basin shows a trend of "distribution along the river, two cores and two belts". Water system, landform and regional culture are the main influencing factors for the formation and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage of folk songs. At the same time, compared with the mountainous areas in western China, the economic and social development and frequent population flow in the Grand Canal basin lead to the diversified and unified musical culture characteristics of folk songs. In the face of the rapid erosion of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage globally, the urgency for effective, wide-ranging preservation methods has never been greater. Traditional approaches in cultural preservation often focus narrowly on specific niches, overlooking the broader cultural tapestry, particularly the preservation of everyday cultural elements. This article addresses this critical gap by advocating for a comprehensive, scalable model for cultural preservation that leverages machine learning and big data analytics. This model aims to document and archive a diverse range of cultural artifacts, encompassing both extraordinary and mundane aspects of heritage. A central issue highlighted in the article is the dominance of English, especially in popular culture, and its role in reshaping cognitive patterns, leading to the loss of traditional languages and cultures. This trend, favoring orality over literacy, amplifies the need for the preservation actions proposed. The article underscores the importance of establishing a more meaningful and comprehensive lingua franca as the first step in this endeavor. This approach is not just about safeguarding languages but also about preserving the nuanced ways in which different linguistic paradigms shape our understanding of the world. The paper explores how language evolution, translation nuances, and the unique perspectives inherent in various linguistic paradigms contribute to a rich cultural diversity. It also examines the impact of technology and social media on traditional cultural norms and the critical need for deliberate efforts to reinforce endangered languages and practices. The proposed model aims to bridge the gap between past and present cultural expressions, using technology to reinforce mother-tongue contexts and enhance the appreciation of diverse human identities and worldviews. This study introduces a brief history of the discovery of and conservation efforts to preserve the Nara Palace Site in Japan, which brought about the recognition of this heritage site as a World Cultural Heritage location by UNESCO in 1996. Accordingly, the 1994 Nara Document on Authenticity plays an important role in contributing to Japanese cultural heritage conservation achievements, with the expansion of cultural diversity and heritage diversity and the concepts of values and authenticity, which proposed a new orientation in terms of awareness and openness to develop a broader vision when identifying architectural heritage values. Against this background, we first discuss the newly proposed concept of so-called "architectural heritage DNA" and its potential structure, providing a simple formula for appraising the authentic values of architectural heritage conservation works. Working within conservation theory, besides the doctrinal study of the 1994 Nara Document on Authenticity, this study also focuses on other important international conventions, such as the 1964 Venice Charter and the 1999 Burra Charter, to clarify the concepts of conservation, restoration, and reconstruction, adding the concept of inheritance between conservation and development, which addresses the lack of international conventions regarding cultural heritage conservation. The viewpoints expressed in this paper are based on the most common concepts of these international conventions but are interpreted in a novel, understandable, practical, and highly applicable approach suited to both the current socio-political situation and future scenarios. Timely, comprehensive, and continuous protection, as well as the use and presentation of authentic tangible and intangible cultural-historical heritage of a certain area can greatly contribute to the economic, ecological and social development of the community and the strengthening of the competitive position. Digitization should relax all previously known forms of cultural expression and enable access to the broadest audience and their participation in cultural life. This paper has the ambition to contribute to a more comprehensive appreciation of the digitization process, facilitate access to digital content and motivate new thinking about the continuous improvement of the availability of movable and immovable cultural assets, as well as intangible cultural heritage. A primary questionnaire was created in order to assess the views and opinions of the citizens of the Republic of Serbia on the importance of the digitization process for the promotion of cultural heritage. The research sample was an opportunistic, convenient sampling of residents of the Republic of Serbia from all 5 regions (n=138). The importance of the digitization process for the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage has been established. Modern technologies are insufficiently represented in the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage, while this attitude is supported by a slightly higher percentage of respondents with the highest level of education. The importance of the digitization process for the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage has been proven, and respondents with the highest level of education attach the highest degree of importance to it. The greatest contribution can be seen in the preservation of the national identity and cultural diversity of the national communities, of our region, with social networks being the media that can contribute the most to the promotion of cultural heritage. Undoubtedly, heritage buildings serve as essential embodiments of the cultural richness and diversity of the world's states, and their conservation is of the utmost importance. Specifically, the protection of the structural integrity of these buildings is highly relevant not only because of the buildings themselves but also because they often contain precious artworks, such as sculptures, paintings, and frescoes. When a disaster causes damage to heritage buildings, these artworks will likely be damaged, resulting in the loss of historical and artistic materials and an intangible loss of memory and identity for people. To preserve heritage buildings, state-of-the-art recommendations inspired by the Venice Charter of 1964 suggest real-time monitoring of the progressive damage of existing structures, avoiding massive interventions, and providing immediate action in the case of a disaster. The most up-to-date digital information and analysis technologies, such as digital twins, can be employed to fulfil this approach. The implementation of the digital twin paradigm can be crucial in developing a preventive approach for built cultural heritage conservation, considering its key features of continuous data exchange with the physical system and predictive analysis. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the digital twin concept in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) domain. It also critically discusses some applications within the context of preserving the structural integrity of architectural heritage, with a particular emphasis on masonry structures. Over the last century, cultural heritage in Nigeria has experienced advanced neglect and continual degradation. This debacle created a trend whereby heritage resources have been wholly or partially replaced by new structures. The few heritage remnants in the locale will disappear if schemes to ameliorate, conserve and adaptive reuse are lacking. This research seeks a paradigm shift that balances the debacle and creates a sustainable physical development and cultural identity. This study is an empirical analysis of Old Oyo town in Nigeria and how it might be transformed into a living heritage rather than a deteriorating locale. This paper utilises the case study approach by presenting examples of the regeneration of the historic city in Fez, Morocco and the Kano ancient area in Nigeria. The findings show culture-led urban regeneration as a viable strategy for place making and sustainable development. It has the potential to drive the needed heritage development in Old Oyo while contributing to its environmental, economic and social sustainability. In addition, the project's archeo-tourism potential is essential for socio-cultural sustainability and the revival of indigenous urban solutions and practices. As a result of its geographic location, cultural diversity and historical trajectory, the Gaza strip is a key zone of scholarly enquiry and has a central role in the historical, social, political, economic, legislative and environmental discourses for the wider region. Existing historical knowledge of Gaza is dominated by combative narrative trends that emphasise the events of the 20th and 21st centuries and invoke archaeology extensively. In this context, cycles of material preservation and damage—often accompanying other forms of violence—have attracted the attention of academics and international media. Among the corollaries of this situation, is the destruction and marginalisation of vulnerable cultural heritage, particularly maritime cultural heritage, which is subjected to additional environmental, climatic, and anthropogenic pressures. As a means of countering the challenges on current field research in the region and to further assess the damage and threats faced by archaeological fabric, this paper combines data from coastal and archaeological research conducted in the Gaza Strip to create a benchmark for the study of its maritime archaeology. Additional information on the alteration of coastal landscape is deduced through the analysis of aerial photographs and satellite imagery. This study falls within the scope of the Maritime Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and Africa Project (MarEA). MarEA aims to comprehensively document and assess vulnerable maritime archaeology (underwater, nearshore, coastal) and produce baseline information that can enhance existing infrastructure on archaeological monitoring and management. This paper analyses connections between music, culture and language. Grant's (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013) work on ethnomusicology encourages the exploration of musical genres as well as their sustenance in the cultural heritage. This study is limited to music in Pakistan. The sustenance of genres is addressed in a way that uncovers its weaknesses and limitations through a detailed analysis. The paper attempts to discuss L1 interference on English blogs and websites dealing with music. It refers to classical music found on the internet, websites and blogs in Pakistan in which local words are incorporated in English in order to establish the diversity of the cultural heritage. In accordance with the given aims and objectives, this paper employs the mixed model of Schneider's (2007) exonormativism, Leitner's (2004b) notion of epi-centre and Grant's (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) idea of sustainability of musical trends. This exercise has been undertaken in order to gauge the extent to which classical music on English blogs and websites has adopted loans and has been sustained in an ethnolinguistic community with a diverse culture. The project "Monuments and Artworks in East Central Europe Research Infrastructure" exemplifies introducing methods and tools of digital humanities to art-historical problems in multilingual and culturally diverse milieu. East Central Europe is a region with historically changing borders and different national cultures of knowledge. For such a region, a proper transnational scientific infrastructure is vital for the adequate description and classification of art-historical monuments, and dynamic networks of actors and cultural phenomena. Drawing on our project experience, we argue that the model of knowledge created through the process of data modelling and setting standards for digital images can be seen as an interpretative and epistemological frame for research. This paper analyses the transnational integration of catalogued data into the infrastructure through a semantic data model. We tackle the question of implementation of multilingual external vocabularies and authority control in the database. The method of indexing photos in the context of the material turn is another crucial issue in the infrastructure. Contemporary post-industrial riverside areas like Marvila and Beato, in Lisbon, are being addressed by public and private bodies towards their urban regeneration. The aim of this paper is to present the ROCK project analysis of cultural heritage meaning, reappropriation and urban sustainability. Methodologically, we developed an inquiry to the local population around the residents' perceptions on cultural heritage, the ongoing changes and existing retail, a cultural heritage mapping, and a conceptual analysis on urban sustainability. The results show the residents' vision on cultural heritage and its relationship with the social and spatial changes, and the resilience process strengthening urban decayed areas, as a crucial element for urban life and socioeconomic development. Our conclusions present the relevance of cultural heritage as a public and private investment against the urban crisis, as well as the diversity in the process of cultural heritage reappropriation, including the residents' participation to cultural led commodification processes developed by private companies. This paper reports on the exploration of potential design opportunities for social media and technology to identify issues and challenges in involving people in generating content within a cultural heritage context. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, arguments are informed by findings from 22 in-depth semi-structured interviews with representatives of cultural institutions and with people from a general audience who recently participated in a cultural activity. The key findings show that social media could be used more extensively to achieve a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, with opportunities in redefining the expert, extending the experience space, and decentralising collaboration. To further support these findings, a case study was set up evaluating the experience of a mini audio tour with user-generated (i.e., personal stories from a local audience) vs. non user-generated (i.e., professional stories including facts) narratives. These were delivered using text and 3D sound on a mobile device. The narratives were related to a built environment in central London near world-renown museums, cultural buildings, and a royal park. Observations, a standardised spatial presence questionnaire, and a short open interview at the end of the tour were used to gain insights about participants preferences and overall experience. Thematic analysis and triangulation were used as a means for understanding and articulating opportunities for social media to better involve and engage people using user-generated narratives presented through 3D sound. Although numerous participatory methods and assessments have been tested in the western context, the community participation practice is still limited in China, a developing country. In addition, due to the diversity of cultural, historical, economic, and social backgrounds, Chinese community participation differs from similar international approaches. Hence it is critical to explore how engaging Chinese people with their own heritage properties can foster stewardship, multi-stakeholder connection, and support policy and strategy making.It is very challenging to preserve the character of historic urban landscapes because they change over time in a rapidly developing urban context. Research on revealing people's stories and preferences concerning the Chinese historic urban landscape in their visiting and living experience is needed to address this concern directly. The study applies a novel approach to explore public attitudes based on the fusion of social media data, land use data and other information. It examines the spatial patterns of public responses towards the government-led urban heritage conservation projects in the historic city centre of Harbin, China, in sixteen months (2021–2022). The article concludes that social media plays an important role in accessing broader communities, monitoring people's preferences, and observing heritage attributes and values for inclusive urban heritage management. The article "Boundaries and Transgressions in the Anthropocene: Intangible Cultural Heritage as a Case Study" examines the significance of Intangible Cultural Heritage for education, learning, and socialization. In the Anthropocene, where humans play a crucial role in the fate of the planet, it is important to engage with nature and culture as a shared heritage of humanity. Intangible Cultural Heritage can make an important contribution to the development of global citizenship. The five areas of the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage are of great importance: oral traditions and expressions, music, body language, performing arts, customs, festivals, rituals throughout the year, humans and nature, craftsmanship. UNESCO is committed to preserving these works and practices and using them for intercultural dialogues and global partnerships to safeguard cultural diversity and develop global citizenship. Technologies and scientific progress are of major importance in monitoring cultural heritage (CH). Studies of CH preservation play a crucial role in understanding human history, inheriting splendid nations' cultures, and safeguarding cultural diversity. The scientific community and the countries must lead a battle to maintain and preserve CH. The possibilities in the search for underground objects (using non-invasive methods) that have been forgotten are presented. This article presents the results of research conducted in the area of the Citadel in Lviv (Ukraine) and an execution site of the Second World War (Kazimierz Biskupi, Poland). This research makes it possible to highlight the problem of researching to find and adequately commemorate objects and events that are essential elements of the CH of Ukraine and Poland. The paper aims to propose a new model of cultural competence in health organizations based on the paradigm of client orientation. Starting from a literature review, this study takes inspiration from dimensions that characterize the cultural competence of health organizations, and re-articulates them in more detail by applying a client orientation view. The resulting framework is articulated into six dimensions (formal references; procedures and practices; cultural competences of human resources; cultural orientation toward client; partnership with community; and self-assessment) that define the ability of a health organization to achieve its mission, acknowledging, understanding, and valorizing cultural differences of internal clients (staff) and external clients (consumers). This study makes an effort to address the paucity of studies linking approaches to managing cultural diversity in health organizations with cultural competence within the framework of client orientation. Over the last few decades (especially since 1970s) international folklore festivals across the globe have been showcasing, promoting, publicizing and safeguarding traditional cultures (specifically dance, music and art) from different parts of the world. Prominently, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) supported organizations such as CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Art), IOV (International Organisation of Folk Art) and CID (International Dance Council) has been focused in terms of the promotion and protection of folk and cultural heritage. A significant number of these international folklore festivals are organized by various cities, towns and villages across the world, for example, Festival Les Cultures du Monde in Gannat, France, Parade Brunssum in Brunssum, Netherlands, Mondial Des Cultures in Drummondville, Canada and WOMAD in Adelaide, Australia. On an average ten to twenty folk music and dance groups are invited from various parts of the world to participate in these festivals that run for several days/weeks, thereby not only providing an opportunity to the groups to showcase their culture, but also, to mingle with other folk groups and local people. Utilising first hand interviews with the organizers of the festival, folk group members and volunteers conducted during the 39th edition of Les Cultures du Monde - the international folklore festival of Gannat in France 2012, this research paper will examine, how the Gannat festival has become a venue for celebrating cultural diversity and in what ways it attempts to promote and safeguard the intangible cultural heritage. Despite vibrant paradigmatic shifts in archaeological thought, Norwegian heritage legislation remains unchanged since the 1970s and is anchored in a traditional identity ideology assuming continuous links between contemporary populations and ancient societies. In the context of current and expected major demographic changes as a result of global migration, policy-makers and developers of alternative frameworks face the challenge of epistemic standstill and recycling of ideas. This article examines and seeks insights into causes for the current status, focusing on tensions between paradigms of value and between various levels of heritage management in and around Oslo, one of the fastest growing urban areas in Europe. Combining the discourse theoretical concept of nodal points with the method of qualitative coding analysis, we study responses by heritage management to perceived challenges of globalisation and demographic changes in all available official white papers produced after the year 2000. By reflecting on present narratives, our discussion relates to struggles over defining 'Norwegianness' and criticism of such notions. The identification of four levels of tension allows us to centre attention on key issues of importance to the societal aim of including and engaging an increasingly heterogeneous population, and to argue for a bottom-up and recursive approach. [Display omitted] Computed Tomography (CT) has proven itself as a powerful technique for analysing the internal structure of cultural heritage objects. The process followed by conservators and technical art historians for investigating an object is explorative: each time a new question is asked based on the outcome of the previous investigation. This workflow however conflicts with the static nature of CT imaging, where the planning, execution and image analysis for a single CT scan can take days, or even weeks. A new question often requires conducting a new experiment, repeating the process of planning, execution and image analysis. This means that the time that is needed to complete the investigation is often longer than originally anticipated. In addition, it brings up more practical challenges such as the transportation of the object, facility availability and dependence on the imaging operator, as well as the cost of running additional experiments. A much needed interactive imaging process, where the user can adapt the CT scanning process based on the insights discovered on the spot, is hard to accomplish. Therefore, in this paper we show how a time-efficient explorative workflow can be created for CT investigation of art objects, where the object can be inspected in 3D while still in the scanner, and based on the observations and the resulting new questions, the scanning procedure can be iteratively refined. We identify the technical requirements for a CT scanner that can address the diversity in cultural heritage objects (size, shape, material composition), and the need for adaptive steering of the scanning process required for an explorative workflow. Our approach has been developed through the interdisciplinary research projects The See-Through Museum and Impact4Art. It discusses the coloniality of power in heritage studies and the importance of decolonial perspectives in resisting domination. The article includes case studies from various regions, emphasizing the intercultural heritage of migrants beyond Europe. Overall, it aims to contribute to the theoretical and empirical discussion on the cultural heritage of people on the move and the link between heritage practices, interculturality, and identities. Understanding the cultural characteristics and evolution of traditional dwellings in the context of ethnic integration is of great significance for protecting the diversity of residential cultural heritage of ethnic minorities. This article compares the ethnic differences in the internal spatial configuration of vernacular dwellings in Xiangxi region, China, a typical multi-ethnic area where "line-shaped" dwellings are prevalent among the Miao, Dong, Yao, Tujia, and Han groups. This study found that the spatial sequence, ritual axis, importance of fireplace, spatial hierarchy, and privacy of bedrooms of each ethnic group's dwellings present a trend towards Han's dwelling culture in the order of "Western Miao, Southern Dong, Northern Dong, Yao, Eastern Miao, Tujia". Based on the analysis of the lifestyles, ethnic customs, and historical development processes of ethnic minorities, this study identifies that the main reasons for the formation of the aforementioned sequence lie in the differences in the historical diffusion patterns and paths of Han culture in Xiangxi. This article analyses the ethnicity of minority residential culture in Xiangxi and its spatial configuration formation process, revealing the relationship between the spatial effect of Han cultural diffusion pattern and the spatial difference pattern of each ethnic group's vernacular dwelling space configuration, and expanding the connotation of "cultural genotypes" in multi-ethnic areas. This paper focuses on a specific community of individuals who have mixed Southern Chinese and Filipino cultural heritage in the Philippines – the 'Lannangs'. I investigate the Lannang identity and, with ethnographic interviews and survey data, propose that the identity should be broadly defined as comprising of four dynamic parts: being Filipino, being Chinese, being neither, and being both. Focusing on the Manila community, I show how the Lannangs navigate between these orientations depending on the social context and the interlocutors. Moreover, drawing on the notions of indexicality and simultaneity, I investigate the role of language in the characterization of the Lannang identity. I also show that Hokkien, Lánnang-uè, Tagalog, English, among other languages, are being used to embody the aspects of 'Lannang-ness'. • The Lannang identity is not just a static 'Chinese' identity. • Being Chinese, being Filipino, being both, and being neither Chinese nor Filipino are crucial facets of the Lannang identity. • Certain Lannang languages are associated with the four facets of Lannang identity and have acquired indexical value. • The Lannangs use these languages to assert aspects of their Lannang identity, depending on the context and situation. • Embracing the complexities of the Lannang identity can help mitigate ethnic attrition in the Lannang community. • Acknowledging the role languages other than Sinitic ones play in the characterization of the Lannang identity can too. Palestine has fluctuated between prosperity and hardships because of political turmoil. Known for their resilience, Palestinians have adapted their living experience and their style to the ever-changing situations, which was reflected on a rich cultural landscape. This cultural diversity has also left a rich cultural heritage on all parts of Palestine that has been inhabited by populations since the Neolithic revolution. The study aims to describe and highlight the characteristics and main components of the cultural landscapes in the central mountains of Palestine utilizing literature review, including analyzing old documents, aerial photos, and pictures to show the relationship between the cultural landscape construction, maintenance, or destruction based on its importance in the Palestinian society and geographical location. In particular, the study answers the following question: what are the characteristics of the cultural landscapes in Palestine? The article concludes that the cultural landscapes in the area can be characterized as: consistency in position and variety of types. Consistency includes their locations and names that have not changed overtime. Variety includes the elements of types such as clustered villages, Khirbets, caves, Maqams, caravanserais, agricultural terraces, stone huts etc., It finds that cultural landscapes in the area have been shaped and reshaped reflecting the Palestinian identity that shows people's relationship with their land. This research, spanning three months from March to June 2023, delves into the community's unique religious practices, challenges, and resilience, shedding light on Indonesia's complex landscape of religious diversity. The Towani Tolotang community's unwavering commitment to their ancestral beliefs, despite being classified under the umbrella of Hinduism by the Indonesian government, exemplifies the resilience of indigenous traditions. Their syncretic belief system, interweaving animism, Hindu rituals, and historical adaptations set them apart within a predominantly Muslim society. Traditional leaders safeguarding their rituals and traditions are critical to cultural preservation. The community's resilience lies in its adaptability, secrecy maintenance, and strategies for transmitting religious knowledge across generations. Challenges persist, with discriminatory policies and interactions with the majority Muslim society. However, the Towani Tolotang community's unwavering commitment to its unique identity serves as an inspiring example of cultural preservation. This paper illustrates the evolution of the concept in the context of the World Heritage Convention, following the World Heritage Committee's records as primary source materials. Already in the late 1970s and the 1980s, the at-that-time-valid normative framework of the convention was under pressure from sections of the international community for revision based on a shift in emphasis from physical aspects to the cultural significance of properties. The change from physical to intangible significance is reflected in the expansion of heritage concepts and the recognition of diverse conservation practices. Against such a background, authenticity was given a new approach by the Nara Document: authenticity as credibility of information sources. The Nara Document was introduced into heritage practices in various regions and was accepted in UNESCO's ''Operational Guidelines'' in 2005. The Nara Document recognized that the authenticity of a site is rooted in specific sociocultural contexts. Under the World Heritage Committee's Global Strategy, certain types of properties may obtain new values attributed by society, and conservation of certain properties involves the continuous interrelationship between people, their activities, and heritage. Indigenous people's cultural heritage is increasingly being subjected to political, social, and economic pressures in the light of capitalism, foreign investment, and displacement perpetuated by external development programmes. Shangaan people in Chilonga communal lands, Chiredzi District in Masvingo Province of south-eastern Zimbabwe are victims of such regimes as the government seeks to evict them from their ancestral lands. The Zimbabwean government's plan to relocate the Shangaan people from their communal territory is problematic for many reasons; it shows the government's failure to uphold human rights, respect property rights, Indigenous rights, and cultural rights. The displacement has a longer-lasting socio-cultural, ecological, and economic impact, affecting cultural diversity and socio-cultural interactions as the government plans to forcefully remove families from their heritage and way of life and change their community set-up. This may, in turn, lead to new patterns of inequalities, loss of cultural heritage, and vulnerabilities. This paper proposes possible formulas for the modification or Implementation of the principles and rights of cultural policies regulated in Spanish Constitution. As a starting point, it must be considered the entire previous experience developed in those Autonomies that reformed their "Estatutos", offering possible alternatives of concretion or improvement of the pre-existing regulation. Today these alternatives could be projected on the constitutional text itself, once the circumstances are given to facilitate Its effective reform. On the other hand, other possible improvements could come from the incorporation of principles already entrenched in the cultural policies of the EU, particularly appropriate for political models such as the Spanish case. As a combination of toponym and cultural heritage with rich connotation of toponymic word-culture and entity-culture, toponymic cultural heritage has the significance of protection and inheritance. It is important for transmitting culture and expanding the cultural connotations of tourism activities. Previous analyses of such heritage protection and tourism exploitation mostly concentrated on resource value from an internal perspective, and the researches focused on toponymic words while paying less attention to toponymic cultural heritage entities, neglecting the influence of environmental condition. This study selected an ecologically and culturally sensitive region with environmental complexity and cultural diversity as an example and constructed a toponym database from multi-source heterogeneous toponym data; screened out toponymic cultural heritages based on a decision tree model; constructed an evaluation model of heritage protection value based on internal and external conditions by considering environmental effects, including toponymic words and entities; complemented an environmental condition evaluation by including natural and man-made disturbances; further widened resource value evaluation dimension with expert judgment and public judgment; and formulated a relatively comprehensive protection value assessment for such heritage. South Africa boasts some of the richest diversity of fauna and flora in the world; it also claims to be a world in one country given its cultural diversity. In a time of climate change, rapid population growth and urbanisation, the country's natural resources as well as its cultural diversity are under threat. We report a multi-dimensional survey conducted among Xhosa-speaking people in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, that collected detailed information on indigenous knowledge of nature and its impact on cultural practices and well-being. Survey respondents included both rural and urban dwellers, a majority of whom professed to be Christians who also held traditional religious beliefs and acknowledged the ancestors. Survey respondents described their Best and Worst periods of life in line with Bernheim's Anamnestic Comparative Self-Assessment, and indicated whether going into nature had contributed to their Best life experience and helped them to cope during their Worst one. Being in nature typically contributed to well-being across many of the Best social domains of life, such as celebrations with family, personal achievements and milestones in life, including traditional rites of passage to adulthood. Deaths in the family represented by far the most common Worst experience in life when going into nature often provided comfort and solace. Findings suggest that experience of the multiple benefits of being in nature may be universal across cultures and that many traditional Xhosa religious beliefs and cultural practices go hand in hand with access and exposure to nature that enhances well-being.
