Starch paste is an adhesive that is used in the field of book and paper conservation. This adhesive has a very short shelf life, and for this reason, it must be prepared in small quantities. Also, preparing starch paste for use in protection is a time-consuming process. This research was done with the aim of facilitating the use of starch paste in the conservation of paper works, long-term storage of starch pastes without fungicidal additives and increasing its durability in the long term without changing the quality of the adhesive. The application of fresh starch pastes and activated starch film increased the pH of the samples coated by these adhesives compared to the control samples without adhesive. The samples covered by the activated starch film after moist-heat aging and light aging had the highest pH compared to other samples. The samples coated with fresh starch paste showed the lowest amount of color changes (ΔE*) after moist-heat aging and light aging, respectively. Application of fresh starch paste and activated starch film increased the tensile strength of the samples. After aging, the tensile strength of the samples decreased compared to the previous stage, but the tensile strength of the samples covered by these adhesives increased compared to the control samples without adhesives. This research explores the practical advantages and potential applications of spray adhesives, focusing on testing their suitability for artwork mounting uses. Their solubility in common low-toxicity solvents (ethanol and acetone) was evaluated. Seven commercial spray adhesives from different commercial brands and compositions were applied on paper samples and subjected to different ageing conditions. The samples were then immersed in the solvent, and the degree of adhesive removal was measured. One of the most relevant conclusions is that commercial neoprene-based spray adhesives become brittle and fragile in a few weeks, which makes them unsuitable for both long-term and temporary applications in the heritage field. On the other hand, the solubility was high or very high in some cases: up to 98 % of adhesive removal was achieved in acetone wash. These tests and the convenience, cost and availability of spray adhesives suggest that some of them may be safely used in some scenarios such as temporary mountings or transport. Formaldehyde-free adhesives are gaining attention due to their compatibility with green production methods. Decorative base paper (DBP) is known for its physical strength and printability and has a high ability for absorbing aldehyde-free adhesives for impregnation. In this paper, DBP was prepared with TiO2 and SiO2 combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), where the amount of TiO2 was reduced in the pulp process. The prepared DBP was impregnated by aldehyde-free adhesive and hot-pressed on wood-based panels. The results showed that upon SiO2 coating, the surface smoothness of base paper increased by 132.3 %, whereas the tensile strength increased by 33.6 %. Furthermore, the colour density of cyan, magenta, yellow and black colours increased by 75.4 %, 99.2 %, 51.9 % and 90.5 %, respectively. The surface properties like surface bonding strength and wear resistance of the covered wood-based panels were found to satisfy the standard requirements, which indicates the products can be used for furniture products. In addition to satisfying a book binding criterion, the paperback should provide content moments. Its binding style must be adjusted to book purpose. In publishing longruns production, the perfect (adhesive) binding style with flexible hotmelt provides optimal binding durability with reasonable book price. Paperback should appeal to everyone through its visual-tactile senses. Taking the required actions in binding quality realization keeps track of comprehensive knowledge on various standardized paper substates (EN643:G3) that need to be wisely joined to realize perfect binding technique practices effectively. Moreover, designer technological awareness gained by experience provides potentials to understanding binding ability principles. The conducted research gives specific answers regarding paper cohesive capacity impact on consistency changes of adhesive bound book. It was concluded that higher paper drape capacity leads to increase of single sheet paper tension. Inappropriate bound book constructing was achieved although the flexible adhesive was used. The rise of fentanyl and fentanyl analogs in the drug supply pose serious threats to public health. Much of these compounds enter the United States through shipping routes. Here we provide a method for fentanyl screening and analysis that utilizes pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) lined paper to recover drug residues from parcel‐related surfaces. The paper used is commercially available repositionable notes (also called post‐it or sticky notes). From this paper, mass spectra were obtained by paper spray‐mass spectrometry (PS‐MS), where PSA paper served as both a sampling and analysis substrate. Seven fentanyl‐related compounds were analyzed: fentanyl, 4‐anilino‐N‐phenethylpiperidine (4‐ANPP), N,1‐diphenethyl‐N‐phenylpiperidin‐4‐amine (phenethyl‐4‐ANPP), valerylfentanyl, 4‐fluoroisobutyrylfentanyl (4‐FIBF), carfentanil, and p‐fluorofentanyl. These compounds were recovered by PSA paper and identified by PS‐MS from packaging tape and plastic at 50 ng and from cardboard and shipping labels at 100 ng. The impact of cutting agents on PS‐MS analysis of fentanyl analogs was explored. No trends of analyte suppression were found at high concentrations of the cutting agents caffeine, diphenhydramine, and lidocaine when recovered from surfaces. A cartridge that required no precise cutting of PSA paper prior to sampling or analysis was evaluated for use in PS‐MS for fentanyl screening. Recovery and detection of fentanyl from plastic sheeting was demonstrated with this cut‐free cartridge. The cut‐free cartridge showed somewhat less consistency and lower analyte signal than the standard cartridge, but performance was suitable for potential screening applications. In combining PSA surface sampling with PS‐MS for drug screening, both sampling and detection of fentanyl‐related compounds is simple, rapid, and low‐cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research is to facilitate the use of starch paste in the restoration of paper works. Especially the works where ink and colors used are not sensitive to water. In this research, starch paste with a ratio of 3 to 1 (3 parts paste and 1 part water) was used. The use of starch paste increased the pH of the samples coated with this paste compared to the control samples without paste. The samples coated with starch paste had the lowest pH after moist-heat aging compared to other samples. The samples coated with starch paste showed the lowest amount of color changes (AE) after moist-heat aging and light aging, respectively. The use of starch paste increased the tensile strength of the samples. After light aging and moist heat aging, the tensile strength of the samples decreased compared to the previous stage, but the tensile strength of the samples coated with starch paste increased compared to the control samples without paste. The results of the adhesion resistance test of the samples showed that the amount of adhesion of the samples decreased to a greater extent after moist-heat aging compared to light aging. In this study, Kozo fibres were fibrillated using the stone wet milling method and the wet atomisation method both deriving from nanocellulose production processes. Kozo fibres with a high degree of external fibrillation were obtained by using the stone mill wet grinding method. Although fibres exhibited the same structure as untreated Kozo fibres, their bonding properties improved. Applying the wet atomisation method, fibrillated Kozo fibres with different degrees of fibrillation were obtained depending on the number of treatments. Fibrillated Kozo fibres can be used in conservation as an adhesive for lining and other stabilisation treatments and may in certain cases replace starch paste, which is susceptible to microbiological damage. Only Kozo fibres and water were used in both mechanical fibrillation methods; therefore, the resulting material can be considered a safe alternative to more traditional adhesives. A novel silica coated paper substrate is developed through a facile vacuum filtration method by using the commercially available silica particles as the coating material and corn starch as the adhesive agent. Unlike the commercial silica coated paper (namely grade SG81 paper), the resulting paper substrate was covered by a layer of silica particles on the top side of the paper, and no cellulosic fibers were exposed at its surface. After loading a solution sample on its surface, the coated silica particles allowed the target analytes to remain at the top side rather than penetration through the substrate. Owing to this effect and the special interactions with analytes, the as-prepared silica coated paper demonstrated superior performance in the analysis of different pesticides in milk using paper spray mass spectrometry to the uncoated filter paper and grade SG81 paper. Compared to the other two papers, paper spray analysis using the as-prepared paper improved the estimated lower limit of quantitation of seven pesticides (alachlor, acetochlor, pretilachlor, butachlor, metolachlor, napropamid and benzeneacetamide) in milk by a factor of 2 to 19-fold depending on the pesticide. The effect of paper properties on the strength of starch gluing for Kraft sack papers has been investigated. We analyzed the effect of surface roughness, wettability and glue penetration. Surface roughness was found not to be related to gluing strength, also surface wetting measured by contact angle showed only a weak relation. Liquid penetration measured by ultrasound (ULP) was found to have a substantial correlation to gluing strength. Comparing ULP liquid penetration speed with actual glue uptake during the gluing process we found that they are only moderately connected. We are attributing this to the fact that the penetration and spreading of the glue on the paper is driven by applying an external pressure during the gluing process, which is not the case for the liquid penetration measurement. Investigating how asymmetrical glue penetration affects gluing strength we found that the relationship was low. The best indication for gluing strength turned out to be the surface wetting/substrate swelling parameter from the ultrasonic liquid penetration measurement. Instead of using finite petroleum-based resources and harmful additives, starch can be used as a biodegradable, low-cost, and non-toxic ingredient for green adhesives. This work employs K3PO4 catalyzed transesterifications of cassava starch and methyl laurate at varying reaction times (1–10 h), resulting in the enhanced hydrophobicity of starch laurates. At longer reaction times, starch laurates having higher degrees of substitution (DS) were obtained. While starch laurates are the major products of transesterification, relatively low-molecular-weight byproducts (1%) were detected and could be hydrolyzed starches based on gel permeation chromatography results. Contact angle measurements confirmed the relatively high hydrophobicity of the modified starches compared with that of native starch. The modified starches were then employed to prepare water-based adhesives on paper (without any additional additives). Notably, the shear strength of the esterified starch adhesives appears to be independent of the DS of esterified samples, hence the transesterification reaction times. Additionally, the shear strength of water-based adhesives (0.67–0.73 MPa) for bonding to paper substrates is superior to that of two other commercially available glues by a factor of 10 to 80 percent. This article describes the implementation of results from a test series exploring non-aqueous facing methods in paper conservation (Bedenikovic 2018). The lessons learnt during the systematic study of different materials and methods were applied in a real-life conservation situation, and findings from the test series could be complemented with observations made in practice. The case study will discuss the conservation of a seventeenth century drawing damaged by ink corrosion. The severely degraded, brittle paper had to be secured with a facing before it could be removed from the mounting board. Adhesives introduced during earlier treatments posed additional challenges during the conservation process. A facing made of Rayon, coated with 2.5 % Klucel® G in water and reactivated with 96 % ethanol stabilized the drawing effectively during treatment and could be easily removed without damaging the object's surface or leaving residues behind. Currently, the industrial success of bio-based adhesives remains limited, despite the growing interest in these compounds. One example is the use of lignosulfonates (LS), a byproduct from the pulp and paper industry, which requires long pressing times to ensure proper performance for wood-based panel production. This study successfully manufactured particleboards using a low press factor of 7.5 s/mm, commonly used for conventional urea-formaldehyde resins on a lab scale. To the best of our knowledge, lignin-based particleboards have never been reported using such low press factors. Thus, 3-layer boards were manufactured in which the core layer was bonded with polymeric isocyanate (pMDI), and the surface layers were bonded with LS. Propylene carbonate (PC) was used as a solvent for pMDI to improve adhesive distribution. The optimum amounts of adhesive were determined using response surface methodology: 1.3% pMDI with 2.2% PC in the core layer and 15% LS in the surface layers. These boards obeyed the requirements of standard EN 312 for general-purpose boards for use in dry conditions (type P1). Their formaldehyde content, determined through the perforator method, was equal to that of the wood mix at the maximum value set by IKEA for class E0.5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paper based assays are paving the way to automated, simplified, robust and cost-effective point of care testing (POCT). We propose a method for fabricating three dimensional (3D) microfluidic paper based analytical devices (μPADs) via combining thin adhesive films and paper folding, which avoids the use of cellulose powders and the complex folding sequence and simultaneously permits assays in several layers. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, a 3DμPADs was designed to conduct more assays on a small footprint, allowing dual colorimetric and electrochemical detections. More importantly, we further developed a 3D platform for implementing automated and multiplexed ELISA in parallel, since ELISA, a routine and standard laboratory method, has rarely been used in practical analyses outside of the laboratory. In this configuration, complex and multistep diagnostic assays can be carried out with the addition of the sample and buffer in a simple fashion. Using Troponin I as model, the device showed a broad dynamic range of detection with a detection limit of 0.35 ng/mL. In this work, barium sulfate (BS) fibers with a three‐level nanorod‐assembled hierarchical structure have been synthesized in a large scale by the barium oleate precursor hydrothermal method. A new kind of anti‐acid and anti‐alkali fire‐resistant BS inorganic paper has been developed using BS fibers, glass fibers and inorganic adhesive, and it has advantages such as high flexibility, good tensile strength, excellent fire‐resistant properties, excellent corrosion resistance to strong acids and strong alkalis. Two different types of waste melamine impregnated paper (WMIP) were generated in the manufactured coated board product plants. First one is obtained when the neat décor papers were impregnated (in the impregnation line) with melamine urea formaldehyde and other chemicals (WMIP1). The second one is generated during the coating of the melamine impregnated papers on the board surfaces (WMIP2). In this study, the utilization of both WMIPs in the production of particleboard as an adhesivereplacement was investigated. First, waste melamine impregnated papers (WMIPs) granulated into flour form using Pulverizator with cooling capabilities. Then, they were dry-mixed with surface and core layer particles at 10% or 15% loadings. Three different WMIPs (WMIP1, WMIP2 or their mixtures - 70% WMIP1+30% WMIP2) were used as adhesive-replacement. Mechanical properties including bending strength, modulus of elasticity, internal bond strength and surface stability of the samples were determined according to EN 310, EN 319 and EN 317 standards, respectively. Based on the results, the type of WMIP had significant effect on all mechanical properties investigated. Particleboards produced with both 10% and 15% of WMIP1 loading provided adequate results for the related standards. The best result was obtained when 15% of WMIP1 was used. It is concluded that WMIP1 might be used as an adhesive-replacement in particleboard manufacturing and may provide economic and environmental benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hemicellulose materials are arguably the second most abundant renewable component of lignocellulosic biomass after cellulose. They are relatively under-utilized hetero-polysaccharides present in lignocellulosic biomass. In this research an alkaline treatment was optimized for extraction of polymeric hemicellulose from fully bleached hardwood pulp (B-HWP) and partially delignified switchgrass (SWG). The hemicellulose extracted from B-HWP was relatively pure with zero percent lignin and 89.5% xylose content whereas the partially delignified SWG hemicellulose contained about 6-3% lignin and 72–82% xylose, depending on the NaOH concentration during extraction (3–17% NaOH solution). A maximum molecular weight of SWG hemicellulose of 64,300 g/mol was achieved for the 10% NaOH solution extraction, whereas the MW of B-HWP hemicellulose at 10% NaOH solution extraction was lower at 49,200 g/mol. We have demonstrated that the residual lignin in SWG hemicellulose lowered the system T g and this might be utilized as a way to increase the applications of hemicellulose in high value biomaterials. Furthermore, the hemicellulose could be crosslinked with zirconium to develop a water resistant gel for coating or adhesive applications. Our results showed that the loading stress required to break an hemicellulose based adhesive connection between two paper surfaces was 0.89, 2.02, 2.75, 3.46, and 3.11 (MPa) for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% AZC samples, indicating that up to about 8% AZC crosslinker in the hemicellulose increases the adhesive behavior of the material. • The consolidating and adhesive properties of funori are described. • SEM analysis and mechanical tests confirm the consolidation of common and ancient paper. Aim of the present work was to deepen the knowledge on the effects of funori on cellulose fibers with particular attention paid to their consolidation. Compared to canvas, paper samples (untreated or artificially aged) show different fiber packaging and liquid-absorbing properties. Herein, we conducted observations of cellulose fibers by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate the seaweed extraction method employed in this work, as well the consolidation action had on the fibers through multiple additions of the prepared solutions. Surface homogeneity and fiber stiffness observed by us increased over time and the fibers, initially frayed and disordered, were eventually incorporated into the purified funori after several solution additions accompanied also by a progressive occlusion of the pores. The achieved consolidation effect was confirmed by means of mechanical tests. Moreover, the method herein developed was slightly modified in view of the application of the funori solution to a cultural asset of historical and botanical interest, still scarcely studied. A novel method was introduced to evaluate the quality of fiber material from paper for recycling. The new concept, fiber integrity value, its components, and its relationship with paper strength properties were examined in more detail. The effect of deinking and screening on fiber integrity value, and its component parameters was shown. The fiber integrity value is closely connected to the strength potential of the pulp. It was shown that when the bonding degree was also considered, there was very good correlation with the tensile strength, tensile stiffness, and compressive strength (SCT) values. Traditional wood-based panels composed of wood and petroleum based adhesives is widely used in furniture manufacturing and construction industries. However, these adhesives are not biodegradable, inhibiting the recycling of artificial board. More seriously, the emission of carcinogenic formaldehyde will lead to severe pollution and environmental issues. This study presents a method for preparing self-bonding composites. Waste poplar powder is used as raw material in the biocomposite, in which exogenous lignin is added, and lignin is extracted from the waste of the paper industry - black liquor, which is beneficial to the environment and the recycling of resources. The resulting biocomposites are characterized by aldehyde-free, better strength, and water stability. The dimensional stability and mechanical strength, bending strength (84.40 MPa), and tensile strength (35.40 MPa) of the biocomposite are 2.0 and 1.6 times that of composites obtained by hot pressing without pretreatment and are 2.7 and 2.4 times that of medium density fiberboard (MDF), lignin plays an important role as an adhesive, which is the key to improving mechanical properties. Moreover, the biocomposite features higher water stability and fire resistance than the traditional wood fiberboard. In conclusion, the developed black liquor-wood biocomposites are potential alternatives used to replace the formaldehyde wood-based fiberboard. To create a green, safe, and aldehyde‐free indoor heating environment, an eco‐friendly emulsion polymer‐isocyanate (EPI) adhesive was applied to the preparation of electrothermal plywood with built‐in carbon fiber paper. The optimized process parameters of electrothermal plywood were 0.9 MPa, 120°C, 6 min, and 200 g/m2 for hot‐pressing pressure, temperature, time, and glue spread amount, respectively. After water immersion for 24 h, the bonding strength of wet‐treated electrothermal plywood decreased to 0.89 MPa. The pull‐out cracks of the carbon fiber paper were the main fracture form of the wet‐treated electrothermal plywood, and the wood failure percentage was 0%–10% under the tensile load. Hydrolysis of the adhesive layer of the wet‐treated electrothermal plywood occurred. The relative C and N contents in the wet‐treated electrothermal plywood decreased by 6.1% and 25.3%, respectively. Moreover, the resistance of the wet‐treated electrothermal plywood increased by 273.4% because the internal conductive path was interrupted during the intrusion of the water molecules. The highest electric‐to‐radiant transfer efficiency of the electrothermal plywood was 72.4%, with a power density of 200 W/m2. In conclusion, wet treatment has a significant effect on the bonding strength and electrothermal performance of the electrothermal plywood bonded with EPI adhesive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to develop bio-based adhesives that can be used for various packaging papers. In addition to commercial paper samples, papers produced from harmful plant species in Europe, such as Japanese Knotweed and Canadian Goldenrod, were used. In this research, methods were developed to produce bio-based adhesive solutions in combinations of tannic acid, chitosan, and shellac. The results showed that the viscosity and adhesive strength of the adhesives were best in solutions with added tannic acid and shellac. The tensile strength with adhesives of tannic acid and chitosan was 30% better than with commercial adhesives and 23% for combinations of shellac and chitosan. For paper from Japanese Knotweed and Canadian Goldenrod, the most durable adhesive was pure shellac. Because the surface morphology of the invasive plant papers was more open and had numerous pores compared to the commercial papers, the adhesives penetrated the paper structure and filled the voids. There was less adhesive on the surface and the commercial papers achieved better adhesive properties. As expected, the bio-based adhesives also showed an increase in peel strength and exhibited favorable thermal stability. The formaldehyde‐free resin impregnated paper is expected to be applied to interior decoration materials and furniture. This is not only conducive to the development of indoor environment toward green and environmental protection, but also beneficial to people's health. In this work, the formaldehyde‐free resin (waterborne polyurethane and waterborne acrylic acid) mixed with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) were separately coated on a raw decorative paper by a dipping method to obtain formaldehyde‐free impregnated paper with outstanding surface bound strength and abrasion resistance. The surface bound strength and abrasion resistance were tested by means of universal ability test machine and abrasion tester. The results showed that waterborne polyurethane and waterborne acrylic acid enhanced by CNC had excellent dispersion, and the bonding properties of formaldehyde‐free impregnated paper were improved by 41.3 and 33.3%, respectively. Herein, soybean meal-based adhesives were fabricated via the addition of dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) obtained from waste paper dissolved in an alkali–urea system and oxidized with sodium periodate. Due to the dissolution by the alkali–urea system, DAC dispersed well in the solution and did not aggregate in the adhesive matrix. Because of the oxidation treatment, DAC was crosslinked with the adhesive matrix via a Schiff base reaction. Meanwhile, hydrogen bonds were formed at the interface between the DAC and the adhesive matrix. Plywood with the SM/DAC/PTGE adhesive reached its highest wet bonding strength of 1.27 MPa (4 wt% DAC addition), a 95% increase compared to that with the unmodified SM/PTGE adhesive. Fine DAC-to-SM interfacial bonding and a dense crosslinking network were constructed in the SM/DAC/PTGE adhesive systems. The cycle of reuse for the alkali–urea system in the experiments demonstrated that the preparation method of the cellulose solution was scalable and sustainable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the present study is to offer an optimal model to predict the tensile index of the paper being consumed to make veneer impregnated with different weight ratios of modified starch (from 3.18 to 36.8%) to urea formaldehyde resin (WR) containing different formaldehyde to urea molar ratios (MR, from 1.16:1 to 2.84:1) enriched by different contents of silicon nano-oxide (NC, from 0 to 4%) using multiple linear regression (MLR) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and compare the precision of these two models to estimate the response being examined (tensile index). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM) were also used to analyze the results. The results of studying the adhesive structure using FTIR analysis showed that as the WR increased to the maximum level and MR increased to the average level (3%), more ether and methylene linkage forms due to cross-linking. TEM analysis also indicated that if an average level of silicon nano-oxide is applied, there will be more cross-linking due to the more uniform distribution and suitable interactions between the adhesive and nanoparticles. The modeling results showed that the ANFIS model estimates have been closer to the actual values compared to the MLR model. It can be concluded that the model offered by ANFIS has a higher potential to predict the tensile index of the paper impregnated with the combined adhesive of UF resin and modified starch. However, the MLR model could not offer a good estimate to predict the response. According to the preferred approach to predict the most effective property of resin coated paper, modelling would be useful to the research community and the results are beneficial in industrial applications without spending more cost and time. Removal of tenacious adhesives is one of the major challenges in paper conservation. This article examines what water-resistant adhesives were used from 1870 to 1920 and comments on the implications of these findings to the practising paper conservator. Water-resistant formulations were found to be more likely to contain animal glue and linseed oil as binders. Other non-water-soluble binders, such as plant resins, shellac, gutta-percha and casein, were also used, as were mixtures of starch or flour paste with animal glue. A variety of chemical hardeners were employed, including tannic acid, formaldehyde and alum. The addition of substances containing multivalent metals such as copper, lead, calcium and aluminium may also have had a hardening effect, though they may not have been added for this reason. Booklice (Liposcelis bostrychophila) are pests in museums and libraries, but it is not known whether a population can build up on paper and adhesives alone in the absence of any other significant nutrient sources. Insects were reared on incubated cellulose paper, either alone or combined with different adhesives, in order to observe if any of these conditions could support population growth. A comparison was also made with insects reared on samples of paper combined with a diet mixture used to culture booklice. Changes in the physical condition of each paper were additionally noted. The paper with diet mixture exhibited significant population increase (6142 per cent) after 49 days. The paper alone and the combinations of paper and adhesives were not able to support population growth, although the proportions of insects surviving after ten months differed, with the paper alone and paper in combination with proprietary starch-based glue (SBG) maintaining the greatest proportions of surviving insects. The paper and adhesives had become discoloured and brittle in all of the combinations tested, although there was very little visible evidence of fungal growth outside of the control groups (paper alone). Chemical indicators of paper degradation were not detected in extracts of incubated paper (paper alone). Controlled atmospheres, good housekeeping and close monitoring of the most vulnerable collections are key to preventing infestations of Liposcelis bostrychophila. Abstract In paper conservation practice, adhesives are used for several purposes, such as mending tears and gaps, or paper consolidation. The criteria to choose one or another adhesive should be based on the knowledge of the properties and stability of those adhesives. However, the several different adhesives available on the market still lack enough information to help the process of a rational decision-making. In the present work, five adhesives currently used in the paper conservation field (starch paste, unsupported Archibond TM, carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose and methylcellulose) were analyzed for their chemical stability and fungal bioreceptivity (the ability of a material to be colonized by fungi). Bioreceptivity of products used in conservation and restoration is a still poorly explored subject, despite its great relevance for the preservation of objects. The chemical and physical properties of the adhesives, before and after moist heat artificial ageing, were analyzed by thermogravimetry, capillary viscometry, measurement of water absorption capacity, colourimetry, and pH measurement. Fungal bioreceptivity of the adhesives was tested on two different substrates (paper and glass) against three fungal species: Aspergillus niger, Aureobasidium pullulans and Penicillium pinophilum. Along 56 days of incubation, the colonization area on the adhesives was measured through digital photo analysis. Starch paste was the most bioreceptive adhesive, but on other hand was also the most stable adhesive to artificial ageing, regarding colour alteration, degree of polymerization and pH. Carboxymethylcellulose and Archibond TM showed chemical deterioration with ageing. Nevertheless, these two adhesives presented only scarce bioreceptivity to the tested fungi. Methylcellulose and hydroxypropylcellulose showed the best relationship between higher chemical stability with artificial ageing and lower fungal bioreceptivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The factors influencing the backing process of the book block spine are determined and their priorities are established. The method of backing the spine of book blocks in the production of publications by the method of perfect binding is proposed. This method involves gluing the backing-captal braid to the spine of the block with a pre-applied adhesive layer. The positive influence of the presence of the adhesive layer of a certain thickness on the physical and mechanical characteristics of the backing material is determined. It is established that the thickness of the blocks, the type of paper, from which the publications are made, and the direction of the cutting of the backing material is influenced by the process of backing the spine. With the growth of the tension deformation of backing materials from 1.2% (for kraft paper) to 3.8% (for the backing braid), the stability of the spine zone of the block increases to damage in the process of multiple flippers. The investigated materials in the longitudinal direction are more durable than in the transverse in 2-2.5 times, so the backed blocks can withstand 4,800 to 15,000 flippers when using kraft paper and backing braid, respectively. With the help of optical microscopy, changes in the structure of the backing-captal braid after the multiple flippers of the book block have been investigated. It is shown that the strength of the binding of a book block depends on the choice of the method of backing. In the process of optimizing the parameters of backing the block root, various variants of linear models were tested, which are described by the functions of the dependences of the breaking forces in the longitudinal or transverse directions Z on the thickness of the block Tb. The allowable elongation of the edging material for its longitudinal and transverse cuttingV is also taken into account. The obtained models allow for the particular type of paper to pick up the necessary backing materials, which will provide a sufficient strength to the perfect binding book blocks. The paper aims to study the effect of aqueous adhesives on color performance of paper-based 3D printing. Sixty-four color cubes of 3D Color Puzzle were printed in Matrix 300A, whose L*a*b* color values on six faces were measured before and after all the faces of the 64 cubes were coated with aqueous adhesives. Before the coating operation, the color differences between the upper and the lower surfaces on the 64 cubes were all below 2.84 NBS, and the color differences between two of four side faces were all below 2.88 NBS. However, the color differences between the front and the side were large, with a maximum of up to 32.53 NBS; After the coating operation, the average color difference between the upper and the lower surfaces of the 64 color cubes was 1.60 NBS, and the maximum was 4.92 NBS, the average color difference between two of four side faces was 1.97 NBS, and the maximum was 4.61 NBS. However, the color differences between the front and the side were greatly reduced, with an average value of 4.02 NBS, and a maximum value of 6.03 NBS. Moreover, the average color difference between the front on 64 color cubes before and after the coating operation was 2.59 NBS, with a maximum of 3.57 NBS. Relative to the effect on the side, aqueous adhesives had a minimal effect on the front. The coating operation could reduce the gap of the color difference between the front and the side, thereby ensuring a more realistic 3D color reproduction and color accuracy control. The presence of pressure-sensitive tapes (PSTs) on paper artworks, either fortuitous or specifically applied for conservation purposes, is one of the most frequent and difficult issues encountered during restoration. Aged PSTs can damage or disfigure artworks, compromising structural integrity, readability, and enjoyment. Current procedures are often inherently hazardous for artistic media and paper support. Challenged by the necessity to remove PSTs from a contemporary and an ancient drawing (20th century, by artists da Silva and Hayter, and a 16th-century drawing of one figure from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo), we addressed this issue from a physicochemical perspective, leveraging colloid and interface science. After a characterization of the specific PSTs present on the artifact, we selected a highly water-retentive hydrogel as the host of 23% wt/wt of "green" organic solvents uniformly dispersed within the gel in the form of nanosized droplets. The double confinement of the organic solvent in the nanodroplets and into the gel network promotes a tailored, controlled removal of PSTs of different natures, with virtually no interaction with the solvent-sensitive artwork. This noninvasive procedure allows complete retrieval of artwork readability. For instance, in the ancient drawing, the PST totally concealed the inscription, "di mano di Michelangelo" ("from Michelangelo's hand"), a possibly false attribution hidden by a collector, which is now perfectly visible and whose origin is currently under investigation. Remarkably, the same methodology was successful for the removal of aged PST adhesive penetrated inside paper fibers of a drawing from the celebrated artist Lucio Fontana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We design a facile strategy to manufacture a high-performance composite of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) made from brown paper and PVC film. Brown paper with little fiber damage is prepared using bamboo pulping via a moderate method, and a high content of lignin enhances the lipophilicity of the fibers. The "layer-network" porous paper provides "green" framework support. When hot and cold pressing of the stacks of paper sheets and PVC films is performed, PVC resin fills the pores of the framework support, and then, strong mechanical interlocking structures are established, similar to the vastly distributed microscale "mortise riveting". Then, a dense and lightweight paper/PVC composite is produced. The composite exhibits strong mechanical properties in terms of tensile strength (132.65 MPa), flexural strength (183.45 MPa), flexural modulus (10.44 GPa), and internal bonding strength (2.6 MPa), with good thermal stability and flame resistance. The strength is 5- to 10-fold that of commercial artificial boards, substantially surpassing that of bamboo, PVC, and other PVC composite resin profiles. Additionally, PVC replaces adhesives that contain or release formaldehyde, and a high percentage (>60 wt%) of green cellulose fibers is used. The simple technology directly uses existing manufacturing methods of papermaking, film stretching, and press laminating systems. Therefore, the high-performance paper/PVC composite is environmentally sustainable and more cost-effective than PVC composites prepared with other fillers. The new materials have great potential prospects for the development of high-strength materials and the implementation of carbon neutrality in prefabricated houses, furniture, vehicles, ships, containers, and color steel plates. Paper acidification causes paper relics to undergo embrittlement and decay, to form dregs, and even to break upon a single touch; therefore, reinforcement and deacidification treatments are essential steps for paper conservation and to retard the deterioration and prolong the life of objects. Polymeric adhesives play an essential role in reinforcement and deacidification treatments, although it is not well studied. In this work, the effect of polymeric adhesives on the conservation process and their protective effects on acidified paper relics were studied. Firstly, three polymeric adhesives, including wheat starch paste, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), were selected as research objects. Subsequently, their effects on four popular conservation methods were further discussed, including traditional mounting, hot-melt with silk net, alcohol-soluble cotton mesh, and water-soluble cotton mesh. Additionally, as an example, the reversibility and long-term durability of water-soluble adhesive PVA-217 were assessed. Using a computer measured and controlled folding endurance tester, pendulum tensile strength tester, tear tester, burst tester, FT-IR, video optical contact angle tester, and other instruments, the conservation application of water-soluble adhesives in paper relics was evaluated. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are used as antifungal agents and imparted in starch paste. The zinc oxide nanoparticles are synthesized using starch as a stabilizing agent under sonochemical irradiation, and then used in the preparation of ZnO NPs‐based starch paste. The effects of starch and ultrasonic irradiation on the formation of ZnO NPs are subsequently investigated. Characterization by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveals that ZnO NPs synthesized under an optimal condition are highly dispersed and well‐defined crystals with diameters of approximately 5 nm. The antifungal performance of ZnO NPs‐based starch paste is evaluated under a high temperature and humidity environment, and is compared with traditional fungicides, alum, and pure terephthalic acid (PTA). In addition, the paste shows negligible toxicity and deterioration to the mechanical properties of the mounted paper. Lastly, the paper mounted with ZnO NPs‐based starch paste shows superior antifungal performance, an essential property protecting paper documents from mold growth, compared to pristine starch paste. On the market there are increased quantities of laminated cardboard packaging with glossy surface. Laminated packaging is being used for its appealing appearance. However, laminated paper treatment creates additional problems in the process of recycling of used product. Adhesives and foil are a specific issue in the separation of impurities in recycled paper. It is crucial that the paper packaging products contained in the paper for recycling are repulpable within standard operating time and equipment. In this research three methods (without chemicals, INGEDE 11 and their combination) of removing impurities from paper pulp are compared and their efficiencies are determined to gain deeper insight into the recycling process. The procedures determine the recyclability of existing printed material, as well as the possible adhesive and material improvements. A specific issue in the separation of impurities was the presence of adhesives as well as silver foil (BOPET metallized film) for lamination. All three applied procedures successfully separate impurity particles from paper pulp and printed laminated boxes in a more sustainable manner, without the use of chemical agents.

Lignin was grafted onto starch main chain by free radical-initiated graft copolymerization and hyperbranched polyester H102 as dispersant to prepare a bio-based paper adhesive (Fig. 1). In the graphical abstract, a represents the structure of adhesives, b indicates the adhesiveness of adhesive to paper, c and d imply that only a trace of adhesive is dissolved when soaked in room temperature for 12 h. However, the adhesive is completely dissolved after the adhesive is shaken in hot water at 80 °C for 0.5 h. This indicates that the adhesive can be dissolved by heating and excluded by water during the waste paper recycling process, and does not affect the recovery of waste paper. One major defect in paper adhesives is that it is difficult to remove the adhesive in waste paper. These adhesives can easily adhere to paper-making equipment, which hampers recycling. Herein, the hyperbranched polyester H 102 is used to act as dispersant, and grafting copolymerization of lignin onto the starch backbone was carried out by initiation of free radicals to prepare a bio-based paper adhesive in water. The results show that the adhesive can achieve the best adhesion properties under m(H 2 O)/m(St) = 15:1, m(SLS)/m(St) = 0.15:1, m(APS)/m(St) = 0.02:1, and pH = 4 at 80 °C for 6 h. The addition of H 102 stabilizes the performance of the adhesive and extends the shelf life. The feasibility was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ultraviolet-visible Spectrophotometry (UV–vis), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and rheological property analysis. Moreover, the as-prepared adhesive can be dissolved in H 2 O by heating, which is beneficial to improve the recovery and recycling of waste paper compared with the traditional adhesives.
