Conservation management practices often produced positive but limited desirable outcomes in US Southeast sandy soils, likely due to their intrinsically low clay contents that constrain the soil’s capacity to preserve organic carbon (C) and nutrients. In the field, we tested the effectiveness of a novel approach, that is, clay soil amendment, to improve sandy soils. In October 2017, clay-rich soils (25% clay) were spread at 25 metric tons ha−1 and tilled onto a sandy soil (1.9% clay) in the field, which was further mixed by light tillage at 0- to 15-cm depth, followed by planting winter cover crop mixtures (cereal rye, crimson clover, and winter pea). The crop rotation was cotton and corn with cover crop mixtures planted in the winter fallow season. Soils (0–15 cm) were collected in August 2021 and subjected to physiobiochemical analyses. Clay amendment increased soil clay content to 3.4%, which improved nitrogen (N) availability by 51% but inhibited the activities of C (β-Dcellubiosidase [CB]; β-xylosidase [BX]; N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase [NAG]) and N (leucine aminopeptidase [LAP]) cycling enzymes, resulting in up to 78% reduction in microbial respiration. A follow-up kinetic study on BG and LAP enzymes suggested that clay addition can have different impacts on enzymes with diverse biological origins through distinct mechanisms. Clay addition can potentially improve sandy soils by stabilizing the organic inputs in soils. However, more research is required to understand its long-term impacts making this approach practical. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is responsive to boron (B) fertilization when there is low soil availability, but the best source and rate to be used and whether this response is dependent on soil texture are still unknown. This study aimed to adjust boron fertilization for cotton as a function of the production environment and B source used. Two field experiments were conducted in the 2020/2021 season in Chapadão do Sul, MS (clayey soil—adequate B content) and Dracena, SP (sandy soil—low B content), Brazil. Treatments consisted of B sources (ulexite [low solubility], borax pentahydrate [BP] [intermediate solubility], and boric acid [BA] [high solubility]), and B rates (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 kg ha−1) applied to the soil at 25 days after plant emergence. In sandy soil with low B content, application of 2 (high and medium solubility sources) and 4 kg B ha−1 (low solubility source) improved fiber yield between 10% (210 kg ha−1 fiber) and 28% (555 kg ha−1), respectively, as well as micronaire index, strength, elongation, uniformity, and short fibers. Application of B greater than 4 kg ha−1 via soluble sources reduced (between 9% (175 kg ha−1)—BP and 14% (257 kg ha−1)—BA) fiber yield only in sandy soil. When B content in the soil is adequate, B fertilization did not improve yield, but increased fiber strength (4%—1.1 g tex−1) and reduced the short fiber index (16%) by applying 1 kg B ha−1, regardless of the source used. The highest fiber yields were obtained with leaf B contents between 12 and 17 mg kg−1 (sandy soil) and 25 and 27 mg kg−1 (clayey soil). We recommend applying 2 kg B ha−1 (solubility sources) and 4 kg B ha−1 (low solubility source) in sandy soils with low B content to improve yield and fiber quality, and 1 kg B ha−1 in clayey soil with adequate B content to improve fiber quality and replace B amounts removed through harvesting. Soil total carbon (STC) and total nitrogen (TN) play important roles in providing essential nutrients for vegetation growth, improving soil structural properties, dissipating organic pollutants, and reflecting the fertility of black soils. Based on 1,057 soil samples collected 0 to 20 cm below the surface, geostatistical analysis was used to explore the spatial distribution and factors influencing STC, TN, and C/N ratios in the study area, which is a typical black soil area in northeast China measuring 83,439.04 km2. The soil sampling points were based on randomness and accessibility, spaced 1.25 km apart. The average STC and TN contents and C/N ratios in typical black soil areas of northeast China were 19.25 and 1.88 g kg–1 and 10.07, respectively, and the STC and TN were significantly higher than the national averages (13.26 and 1.32 g kg–1, respectively). The spatial distribution showed a decreasing trend from northeast to southwest, and the nucleation density of STC and TN was highest in the central part and decreased to the north and south. The STC and TN contents and C/N ratio were highest in clayey soil and were 46.11 and 4.23 g kg–1 and 11.39, respectively. The sandy soils had the lowest STC, TN, and C/N ratios. The distribution of STC and TN content is governed by multiple factors, such as human activities, soil type, climate, topography, soil acidity and alkalinity, and land use changes. This study provides the benchmark needed for the development and conservation of China's black soil resources. In this letter, the authors propose a microwave sensor capable to detect soil moisture content parameter for use in precision agriculture and agricultural smart monitoring applications. The novel sensor is based on complementary split‐ring resonator metamaterial topology, microstrip line and was built under biodegradable dielectric substrate of polylactic acid for sustainable purposes. The sensing mechanism relates the sensor's resonant frequency to the soil moisture content changes over time. For experimental validation purposes, a compact sensor prototype (75 mm × 35 mm × 1.55 mm and 12 g) with fundamental resonant frequency at 958 MHz was built and submitted to calibration process on typically sandy and clay soils to get fitting models capable to estimate soil moisture content. Simulated and experimental results are presented together and show good agreement with each other. The calibration data for both soil types were processed using the least‐squares method and the proposed curve‐fitting models are capable to estimate soil moisture content levels from 5% to 20% for sandy soil and from 12% to 23% for clay soil with satisfactory accuracy, proving the device viability. In savannas, partitioning of below‐ground resources by depth could facilitate tree–grass coexistence and shape vegetation responses to changing rainfall patterns. However, most studies assessing tree versus grass root‐niche partitioning have focused on one or two sites, limiting generalization about how rainfall and soil conditions influence the degree of rooting overlap across environmental gradients.We used two complementary stable isotope techniques to quantify variation (a) in water uptake depths and (b) in fine‐root biomass distributions among dominant trees and grasses at eight semi‐arid savanna sites in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Sites were located on contrasting soil textures (clayey basaltic soils vs. sandy granitic soils) and paired along a gradient of mean annual rainfall.Soil texture predicted variation in mean water uptake depths and fine‐root allocation. While grasses maintained roots close to the surface and consistently used shallow water, trees on sandy soils distributed roots more evenly across soil depths and used deeper soil water, resulting in greater divergence between tree and grass rooting on sandy soils. Mean annual rainfall predicted some variation among sites in tree water uptake depth, but had a weaker influence on fine‐root allocation.Synthesis. Savanna trees overlapped more with shallow‐rooted grasses on clayey soils and were more distinct in their use of deeper soil layers on sandy soils, consistent with expected differences in infiltration and percolation. These differences, which could allow trees to escape grass competition more effectively on sandy soils, may explain observed differences in tree densities and rates of woody encroachment with soil texture. Differences in the degree of root‐niche separation could also drive heterogeneous responses of savanna vegetation to predicted shifts in the frequency and intensity of rainfall. This study investigates the condition of commercial miscanthus fields, growers' concerns and reasons for growing the crop and also the modelling of a realistic commercial yield. Juvenile and mature Miscanthus × giganteus crops of varying age are surveyed in growers' fields across mid‐England. We record in‐field plant density counts and the morphology of crops of different ages. Mature crops thrive on both clay and sandy soils. Plants surveyed appear robust to drought, weeds and disease, the only vulnerability is rhizome condition when planting. Mature miscanthus planted pre‐2014 continues to develop, spreading into planting gaps and growing more tillers. In stands planted post‐2014, improved planting techniques reduce planting gaps and create a reasonably consistent planting density of 12,500 plants/ha. The main reason for growers' investment in miscanthus is not financial return, but relates to its low requirement for field operations, low maintenance cost and regeneration. This offers practical solutions for difficult field access and social acceptability near public places (related to spray operations and crop vandalism). Wildlife is abundant in these fields, largely undisturbed except for harvest. This contributes to the greening of agriculture; fields are also used for gamebird cover and educational tours. This crop is solving practical problems for growers while improving the environment. Observed yield data indicate gradual yield increase with crop age, a yield plateau but no yield decrease since 2006. In stands with low planting densities, yields plateau after 9 years. Surveyed yield data are used to parameterize the MiscanFor bioenergy model. This produces options to simulate either juvenile yields or a yield for a landscape containing different aged crops. For mature English crop yields of 12 t ha−1 year−1, second‐ and third‐year juvenile harvests average 7 t ha−1 year−1 and a surrounding 10 km by 10 km area of distributed crop age would average 9 t ha−1 year−1. Mixed application of controlled‐release and normal urea (MCU) is considered as a promising alternative to farmers' practice with one‐time nitrogen fertilization (FP) and optimal split nitrogen fertilization (OPT). In this study, MCU effectiveness on maize (Zea mays L.) were investigated by conducting 2‐yr field experiments on sandy and clay soils. Across the 2 yr, grain yields in MCU increased by 22 and 18% relative to FP on sand and clay soils, respectively, and net returns increased by 65 and 19%, respectively, while total N losses reduced by 228 and 193 kg N ha−1, respectively. In general, MCU showed significant advantages in agronomic, economic, and environmental benefits relative to FP across soil types, and the advantages were more remarkable on sandy soil. Although OPT also showed better effectiveness relative to FP, while its performances were similar to MCU on clay soil but slightly less effective on sandy soil. Compared to FP, the lower N rate and optimized N management in MCU and OPT effectively reduced N loss and ensured sufficient soil N availability to meet maize N demand at the later growth stage, accumulated more dry matter (DM) and N in plants that associated with larger post‐silking ratios, and consequently improved grain yield and nitrogen recovery efficiency (REN). Our results demonstrated that MCU is an effective and promising method to concurrently meet smallholders' requirement for simplified fertilization and the optimal N management strategy, could replace OPT as an optimal N management method for maize on both two soil types, especially on sandy soil. The nitrogen (N) release from composted and un‐composted biosolids and plant available N (PAN) of the biosolids were quantified to evaluate if composting can contribute to stabilize biosolids N and reduce the nitrate (NO3-) leaching potential in biosolids‐amended soil. Biosolids were composted at >55°C for 21 days after mixing the biosolids with yard waste at 1:1 (w/w) ratio. In the N release study, we installed field lysimeters filled with soil (sand and clay) amended with composted and un‐composted biosolids at two rates (30 and 150 dry Mg/ha) and measured the inorganic N in leachate after each rainfall and soil inorganic N monthly. The N released from composted biosolids during the two‐year study period were lower (6% of organic N added for clay and 11% for sandy loam soil) as compared to un‐composted biosolids (14% of organic N added for clay and 21% for sandy soils). Composted biosolids showed a lower N release rate constant k value of 0.0014 and 0.0027 month−1 for clay and sandy soil, respectively, compared to corresponding values of 0.0035 and 0.0068 month−1 for un‐composted biosolids. We used greenhouse bioassay with corn (Zea mays), ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and Miscanthus (Miscanthus giganteus) as test plants grown for six months with reference to N chemical fertilizer ranging from 0, 75, 150 to 300 kg N/ha to evaluate the PAN of the biosolids. Based on our study, plant growth was not affected by using either composted or un‐composted biosolids but the PAN was lower in composted biosolids (4.0%–5.9%) than un‐composted biosolids (11.4%–13.6%). Composting results in higher N‐retention efficiency in biosolids and composted biosolids are a valuable source of N to support the plant growth with lower N released to the environment. Thus, the potential of N leaching would still be low in the situations where a high rate of biosolids needs to be applied for land reclamation or landscaping soil reconstruction. This study was carried out in order to assess the influence of biochar applications on the estimation of colorimetric‐based enzymatic assays and to verify the effectiveness of the most common methods. Since most methods used to determine enzymatic activities in the soil are based on colorimetry, biochar may absorb substrates and/or coloured products thereby distorting the analytical result. Biochar was added to two soils, with different textures and cation exchangeable capacities, at a rate of 2% (w/w), and seven enzyme activities were determined following standard methods. The biochar amendment lowered the spectrophotometer reading of the activity of FDAase and dehydrogenase in the sandy soil. In the three enzymatic activities based on p‐nitrophenol production (β‐glucosidase, phosphatase and arylsulphatase), the addition of biochar did not change the enzyme assays. The biochar led to an overestimation in terms of the protease and urease activities in the sandy soil. In the clay loamy soil, biochar did not change the response of any of the enzyme activities tested. A biochar dose of up to 2% only guarantees the effectiveness of the most common spectrophotometric methods for not excessively sandy soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we examined the efficiency of a kaolinite clayey soil to mitigate water repellency of a sandy soil with olive trees. The treatment was applied to the soil zone below the tree canopy, which displayed the highest degree of water repellency [average water drop penetration time (WDPT) value = 820 s]. Both dry (incorporated onto the top soil) and wet clay applications (after dispersion in irrigation water) were examined in a replicated experiment, with control trees being used for comparison. The application rate of the clayey soil was maintained in both cases (wet and dry mode) equal to 1 kg m−2, while the effect of subsequent wetting and drying cycles on the treatment performance was evaluated. The results of the study verify that clay application was effective to mitigate soil water repellency. Dry supplementation displayed low efficiency (26% reduction of the air-dry WDPT compared with the control soil) within the first week of application. The efficiency of the dry-clay treatment increased to 76% after applying three subsequent wetting and drying cycles. In comparison with the dry mode, the wet clay was efficient immediately after application (74% reduction of the WDPT), indicating that the limiting step in the overall process was clay dispersion. ABSTRACT Development of rock physical properties in well-sorted and poorly-sorted unconsolidated mono-quartz sands and sand-clay mixtures as a function of effective stress in both dry and brine-saturated conditions is assessed in this study. The tested samples were prepared with full control on their mineralogy, grain size, grain shape, sorting, and fabric. The experiments were performed in a high-stress uniaxial oedometer up to a maximum of 30 MPa vertical effective stress. Sand-clay samples were a mixture of sand grains and clay particles (kaolinite or smectite) in different proportions. The maximum clay volume fraction used in the experiments was at most 30%. The initial bulk density of the tested sand-dominated samples was adjusted to be close to the maximum index density expected for natural sediments (sand-clay mixtures) during deposition. In pure sand samples, finer grained sand show higher initial porosity than relatively coarser grained sands. Moreover, sand-clay mixtures have lower initial porosity than pure sands. Porosity decreases as a function of increasing clay content. The poorly-sorted sand samples are less compaction prone than the well-sorted sand samples. Among well-sorted sand samples, coarser grained sands are more compressible than finer grained sands. At a given effective stress level, sand-clay mixtures are more compaction prone compared with their sand component alone. Pure sands and clay-poor sand-clay mixtures (either sand-kaolinite or sand-smectite) show almost the same degree of compaction when tested in both dry and brine-saturated conditions. In contrast, clay-rich sand-kaolinite and sand-smectite mixtures (clay volume >20%) are significantly more compact in brine-saturated condition. The Vp values of brine-saturated sand-kaolinite mixtures shows a positive correlation with the kaolinite content, whereas Vp starts to decrease substantially when the volume fraction of smectite exceeds 10% of the whole sand-smectite samples. Saturated bulk moduli estimated by Gassmann's fluid substitution agree with measurements for brine-saturated clay-poor sand samples. However, the model does not yield proper predictions for sand-clay samples containing 20% clay volume and above, particularly when the clay is mainly smectite. The acoustic and physical properties derived from experimental compaction of pure sands and sand-clay mixtures show a good agreement with rock properties derived from well logs of mechanically compacted pure sands and shaly sands in progressively subsided basins such as Viking Graben in the North Sea. Thus, the outcome of this study can provide reliable constraints for rock physical properties of sands and shaly sands within the mechanical compaction domain and contribute to improved basin modelling and identification of hydrocarbon presence, overconsolidation, and/or undercompaction.
