Aim: This study aims to examine the relationship between older adults' health literacy and their psychological well‐being and the role of worry about future unmet needs for medical care in mediating this relationship. Methods: We adopted a sample of 965 older Chinese people aged 60+ (49.74% female) from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey. A series of structural equation models (SEMs) were performed. Health literacy was measured by three items regarding older people's ability to understand medical professionals, ask them questions, and read medical instructions. A single‐item question was adopted to measure participants' worry about unmet needs for future medical care. Psychological well‐being was measured by three items regarding emotional problems and depressed or anxious mood in the past 4 weeks. Results: Worry about future unmet needs for medical care mediates the relationship between lack of health literacy and Chinese older people's psychological well‐being. The indirect effect accounts for 22.3% of the total effect. The SEM model has a satisfactory model fit (goodness of fit index = 1.000, comparative fit index = 0.999, Tucker‐Lewis index = 0.997, root mean square error of approximation = 0.009, standardized root mean square residual = 0.023, chi‐square test = 50.96, P = 0.321). Conclusions: The findings of this study underscore the importance of improving communication quality between healthcare providers and older adults. Aim: To explore the mediating role of psychological capital between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour among Chinese nurses. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: In December 2021, online surveys were delivered among nurses from 37 hospitals in Anhui Province by convenience sampling approach. The data was collected using the Chinese version of the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, Nurse Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Nurse Innovative Behaviour Scale. The structural equation model and bootstrap test examined the mediating role of psychological capital between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour. Results: 3495 Chinese nurses from 37 Anhui Province hospitals participated in this study. The mean item score of authentic leadership was 3.25 (SD 0.83), psychological capital was 4.85 (SD 0.89), and innovative behaviour was 2.82 (SD 0.84). Authentic leadership perceived by nurses, psychological capital, and innovative behaviour were statistically significant and positively correlated with each other (r = 0.524 ~ 0.806, p < 0.01). Psychological capital significantly mediated the association between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour (β = 0.449, p < 0.001), and its mediating effect accounted for 76.75% of the total effect. Conclusion: Results suggest the importance of developing nurse managers' authentic leadership to foster nurses' psychological capital and innovation behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The longitudinal associations of sleep timing and time in bed (TIB) with dementia and cognitive decline in older adults are unclear. Methods: This population‐based cohort study used data from 1982 participants who were aged ≥60 years, free of dementia, and living in rural communities in western Shandong, China. At the baseline (2014) and follow‐up (2018) examinations, sleep parameters were assessed using standard questionnaires. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia was diagnosed following the DSM‐IV criteria, and the NIA‐AA criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD). Data were analyzed using restricted cubic splines, Cox proportional‐hazards models, and general linear models. Results: During the mean follow‐up of 3.7 years, dementia was diagnosed in 97 participants (68 with AD). Restricted cubic spline curves showed J‐shaped associations of sleep duration, TIB, and rise time with dementia risk, and a reverse J‐shaped association with mid‐sleep time. When sleep parameters were categorized into tertiles, the multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of incident dementia was 1.69 (95%CI 1.01–2.83) for baseline sleep duration >8 hours (vs. 7–8 h), 2.17 (1.22–3.87) for bedtime before 9 p.m. (vs. 10 p.m. or later), and 2.00 (1.23–3.24) for mid‐sleep time before 1 a.m. (vs. 1–1.5 a.m.). Early bedtime and mid‐sleep time were significantly associated with incident AD (HR range: 2.25–2.51; p < 0.05). Among individuals who were free of dementia at follow‐up, baseline long TIB, early bedtime and mid‐sleep time, early and late rise time, and prolonged TIB and advanced bedtime and mid‐sleep time from baseline to follow‐up were associated with a greater decline in MMSE score (p < 0.05). These associations with cognitive decline were statistically evident mainly among men or participants who were aged 60–74 years. Conclusions: Long TIB and early sleep timing are associated with an increased risk of dementia, and the associations with greater cognitive decline are evident only among older people aged 60–74 years and men. Background: Sleep disturbance is common in patients with heart failure. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with heart failure, and to examine the serial multiple mediation effects of psychological distress and sleep hygiene practices on the relationship between symptom burden and sleep quality. Methods: We recruited eligible heart failure patients in a large, university‐affiliated hospital in Shandong Province, China, from November 2018 to June 2019. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Heart Failure Somatic Perception Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale were used to assess patients' sleep quality, symptom burden, psychological distress, and sleep hygiene practices. The mediation effects were analyzed using the PROCESS tool in SPSS. Results: Two hundred and thirty seven heart failure patients were included in the final analyses. Among these patients, 189 patients (67.1%) had a sleep disturbance (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score of >5). Higher symptom burden, higher level of psychological distress, and poorer sleep hygiene practices were associated with patients' poorer sleep quality. The psychological distress and sleep hygiene practices had mediation effects on the relationship between symptom burden and sleep quality in patients with heart failure. Conclusions: Patients' symptom burden could affect their sleep quality through psychological distress and sleep hygiene practices besides a direct effect. Thus, psychological distress and sleep hygiene practices should be fully considered in the development of interventions to improve patients' sleep quality, apart from alleviating patients' symptom burden. Background China has the world's highest diabetes prevalence, which along with hypertension and inflammation continues to grow particularly among children. Little is known about the strength of the association of these cardiometabolic risk factors between parents and their children; thus, the potential of household-based strategies to reduce risk is unknown. Objectives The objective of the study is to examine the parent-child association for haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), blood pressure (BP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in a large, geographically diverse Chinese sample. Methods In 940 parent-child pairs (children aged 7-17 years) who participated in the 2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey, we measured each individual's HbA1c and CRP using fasting blood and BP. We used sex-specific random-effects linear regression to examine the parent-child association for these risk factors, accounting for within-family clustering. Results Child's HbA1c was positively associated with parental HbA1c. Beta coefficients ranged from 0.06 (95% CI 0.03-0.12) for father-daughter to 0.43 (95% CI 0.28-0.58) for mother-son pairs. We also detected a positive mother-daughter association for BP and positive father-child associations for CRP. Conclusion The statistically significant parent-child association for HbA1c, BP and CRP in Chinese families suggests that household-based interventions could be useful for confronting the high rates of diabetes, hypertension and inflammation in China.
