Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by several moulds of Aspergillus and Penicillium genera on many agricultural commodities used for feed production. It is primarily a nephrotoxic substance, but it can also cause immunosuppression in pigs and increase their susceptibility to infections. Porcine mycotoxic nephropathy (PMN) is a chronic poisoning associated with OTA exposure. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the content of OTA in pig kidneys which were examined during the regular monitoring of the safety and quality of food of animal origin in the Czech Republic during the years 2012–2021. Results revealed no differences between the monitored years or age categories and no differences between the year seasons, which could have an influence on the storage conditions and thus feed contamination by moulds. The values found in this study are low and similar to those assessed in several studies performed in other European countries and do not exceed the limits set in their legislation, which means these organs do not pose a risk for consumers and do not indicate PMN in monitored pigs. Czech Republic as well as EU legislation do not regulate OTA levels in the food of animal origin yet.

The wide use of cell technologies in clinical practice requires a large amount of cell material, which has led to improvement in culture conditions, making it possible to obtain more cell material in a shorter period of time. Thus, the purpose of our paper was to study the effects of different concentrations of an insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), a fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2),| a growth hormone (rhGH), and Biolaminin 521 LN (LN 521) on the proliferative activity and genetic stability of stem cell cultures derived from the cat bone marrow, adipose tissue, and myocardium. Cell cultures for the experiment were obtained from the adipose tissue, bone marrow, and myocardium of a cat. Differences were found in the effects of the various growth promoters on the proliferative activity of cells in the culture. The IGF-1 demonstrated a positive effect on the proliferative activity of all cultures. The addition of the rhGH to the bone marrow-derived cell culture increased the size of the cells and decreased the proliferation index relative to the control group. The addition of the growth factors to the culture medium did not significantly increase the number of cells with altered karyotype in any of the cultures relative to the control group.

Many important discoveries have been made in the field of nanotechnology in the last 40 years. Since then, nanoparticles became nearly ubiquitous. With their spreading use, safety concerns have warranted extensive research of nanotoxicity. This paper offers information about the occurrence, transport, and behaviour of metallic nanoparticles in the aquatic environment. It further summarizes details about parameters that dictate the toxicity of nanoparticles and discusses the general/common mechanisms of their toxicity. This review also focuses on fish exposure to nanoparticles, including the possibility of trophic transport through the food chain. Information on some of the most frequently used metallic nanoparticles, such as silver, gold, and titanium dioxide, is further elaborated on.

Angiomyolipoma is an extremely rare neoplasm in animals. It belongs to a group of perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (so-called PEComas). This study reports a case of primary soft tissue angiomyolipoma in a dog with some unusual clinical features. A 4-year old female Labrador dog with a rapidly growing pelvic tumour measuring 30 × 20 cm with a short history of 12 weeks was presented. The tumour was well-circumscribed and pushed into the right vaginal wall and into the perineum. The tumour was completely surgically excised. An extensive histological examination was performed, including immunohistochemical analysis. Histology revealed a mesenchymal neoplasm consisting of three tissue components – mature adipose tissue (which dominated), vessels, and smooth muscle (spindle) cells. The lesion showed positive immunohistochemical staining with smooth muscle actin and desmin in mature-appearing smooth muscle cells and S-100 protein positivity in adipocytes. The diagnosis of angiomyolipoma must be considered in different types of benign and malignant tumours of various lineages. The diagnostic approach to soft tissue tumours, including angiomyolipoma, requires optimal processing and sectioning of resected specimens. This paper is believed to be the first case of primary soft tissue angiomyolipoma reported in the veterinary literature.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is found worldwide, and it is estimated that more than 50% of the population is infected. The presence of H. pylori in the gastrointestinal tract is associated with the occurrence of serious human diseases such as chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer or gastric cancer. Therefore, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified H. pylori as a Group 1 carcinogen in 1994. The routes of H. pylori transmission are not yet precisely known. Many authors agree that humans may become infected by H. pylori through foodstuffs. Milk is one of the basic foods of people of all age categories. Helicobacter pylori has been isolated from milk derived from various livestock, such as cows, sheep, goat, camel or buffalo milk. This review research paper indicates that H. pylori may be present in different types of foods and suggests that consumption of milk and selected dairy products may be a source of H. pylori infection for humans.

Severe spinal cord injury (SCI) causing significant morbidity and mortality remains one of the most challenging problems in both human and veterinary medicine. Due to the restricted regeneration potential of the central nervous system (CNS) in mammals, the neurological deficit caused by spinal cord (SC) injury is permanent, and no therapeutic measures are able to completely restore neurological functions either in primates or in non-primate animals with traumatic tetraparesis/tetraplegia or paraparesis/paraplegia. The constant progress in the understanding of pathophysiologic events developing after spinal cord trauma constitute an unremitting inspiration for neuroscientists and health care professionals to test novel medicaments and treatment strategies to cope with this situation. Recent experimental studies and preclinical trials have delivered promising results. The aim of this review is a presentation of generally accepted methods of management of dogs with SCI as well as a report on new therapeutic modalities, and comment on their potential for clinical translation. The research strategy involved a search of PubMed, Medline, and ISI Web of Science from January 2010 to December 2018 using the terms “spinal cord injuryˮ and “management of spinal traumaˮ in the English language literature. References from selected papers were also scanned and evaluated for relevance.

The aim of the study was to identifyCampylobacterspecies in a group of patients with chronic gastrointestinal problems and to investigate the relationship between the presence ofCampylobacterspp. in stool samples and as well as the severity of chronic enteropathy. Twenty-six dogs with chronic gastrointestinal problems were included in the prospective study. Each research subject had their stomach, duodenum, ileum, and colon examined endoscopically. A histopathological examination of the obtained biopsy samples was then performed, excluding other potential diseases. Stool samples were collected and then examined for the presence ofCampylobacterspp. To evaluate the relationship betweenCampylobacterspp. occurrence and the intensity of chronic enteropathy, patients were divided into two groups; animals in the first group presented with no to mild inflammation whereas research subjects in the second group suffered from moderate to severe inflammation. Subsequently, the patients were divided based on positive or negative test results forCampylobacterspp. cultures. No significant relationship between the presence ofCampylobacterspp. in stool samples and chronic enteropathy was found. In contrast to other previously published papers, our study showed a lower occurrence ofCampylobacter upsaliensis.

Tissue engineering promotes tissue regeneration through biomaterials that have excellent properties and have the potential to replace tissues. Many studies show that bacterial cellulose (BC) might ensure tissue regeneration and substitution, being used for the bioengineering of hard, cartilaginous and soft tissues. Bacterial cellulose is extensively used as wound dressing material and results show that BC is a promising tissue scaffold (bone, cardiovascular, urinary tissue). It can be combined with polymeric and non-polymeric compounds to acquire antimicrobial, cell-adhesion and proliferation properties. To ensure proper tissue regeneration, the material has to be: biocompatible, with minimum tissue reaction and biodegradability; bio-absorbable, to promote tissue development, cellular interaction and grow; resistant to support the weight of the newly formed tissue. Its versatile structure, physical and biochemical properties can be adjusted by adapting the bacteria culturing conditions. The main biomedical applications seem to be as hard (bone, dental), fibrocartilaginous (meniscal) and soft tissue (skin, cardiovascular, urinary) substituents. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge, challenges and future applications of BC and its biomedical potential in veterinary medicine. It was focused on the main uses in regeneration and scaffold tissue replacement and, although BC showed promising results, there is a lack of successful results of BC use in clinical practice. Most studies were performed only at experimental level and further research is needed for BC to enter clinical veterinary practice.

A lesion of sacrococcygeal spinal nerve roots forming a structure that resembles a horse's tail results in the development of clinical entity identified as the cauda equina syndrome (CES). The disease can evolve slowly and symptomatology can be incomplete, but the fully developed CES is characterized by pain and altered sensation in the pelvic extremities, tail, perianogenital region, paresis or plegia of hind limbs, incontinence and impotence. Major causes of CES in dogs are degenerative changes of the lumbosacral vertebral column, haematoma, inflammation, neoplasm or trauma. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical presentation, neurological symptomatology, spinal röntgenography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In animals experiencing initial episodes of CES, conservative therapy can be attempted. But the only rational treatment of patients with severe neurological deficit is surgical decompression of the neural structures. The outcome depends on the underlying aetiology and the degree of sensory, motor and autonomic dysfunction. Canine and porcine experimental models mimicking the CES showed the involvement of intrinsic spinal cord structures. This points out the need for an early diagnosis followed by aggressive management before irreversible neuronal lesions develop. Parenteral iron administration has been a common practice for the prevention of iron deficiency in newborn piglets. The efficacy and safety of this method require reexamination due to the introduction of new genetic lines and management changes in swine production. The aim of this article was to review current knowledge on this method of anaemia prevention in piglets. Iron requirements, iron sources, and the mode of action, dosage, and negative effects of iron dextran injection are discussed. The paper also reviews methods for evaluating the efficacy of iron administration in piglets.

The time around calving in highly productive dairy cows is a critical period in terms of their metabolism, which is connected with high demands of the foetus as well as with the onset of lactation. Retained placenta in cows may have multifactorial aetiology, but in herds which are free from infectious diseases, the most important reasons are; periparturient metabolic changes and disturbances to the internal balance and stress. During the periparturient period, the most important factor causing immune suppression and hypotony of uterus in cows is metabolic stress due to hormonal and nutritional factors, including metabolic fluctuations, negative energy balance, as well as shortage of proteins, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. This metabolic stress as a result of an imbalance in the internal metabolic homeostasis activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPA) and increases serum corticosterid (cortisol) concentration, especially on the day of calving. Cortisol is a powerful immune suppressive factor that causes depression of leukocyte proliferation and their functions. The periparturient metabolic stress may also stimulate the production of catecholamines, especially adrenalin. Elevated levels of adrenalin activate adrenoreceptors of the myometrium, which in turn cause hypotony or atony of the uterus at calving in cows. Elevated levels of cortisol and adrenalin may significantly inhibit the rejection and expulsion of foetal membranes in cows, resulting in an increased incidence of their retention. These important mechanisms for placental retention in highly productive dairy cows often have primary nutritional metabolic aetiology, but they also occur during secondary metabolic disturbances and metabolic stress during calving. This metabolic and immunological aetiology and pathogenesis of retained placenta usually occur in highly productive periparturient cows on dairy farms in the absence of bovine infectious diseases, which can couse placentitis, stillbirth and the infectious origin of foetal membrane retention. The paper presents the most important metabolic, mineral and immunological disturbances as conditions for retained placenta in dairy cows. It also shows different methods of herd monitoring, important examples of clinical and laboratory diagnostics, and methods of nutritional and veterinary prevention of this health problem in dairy cows.
