In many important applications of precision medicine, the outcome of interest is time to an event (e.g., death, relapse of disease) and the primary goal is to identify the optimal individualized decision rule (IDR) to prolong survival time. Existing work in this area have been mostly focused on estimating the optimal IDR to maximize the restricted mean survival time in the population. We propose a new robust framework for estimating an optimal static or dynamic IDR with time-to-event outcomes based on an easy-to-interpret quantile criterion. The new method does not need to specify an outcome regression model and is robust for heavy-tailed distribution. The estimation problem corresponds to a nonregular M-estimation problem with both finite and infinite-dimensional nuisance parameters. Employing advanced empirical process techniques, we establish the statistical theory of the estimated parameter indexing the optimal IDR. Furthermore, we prove a novel result that the proposed approach can consistently estimate the optimal value function under mild conditions even when the optimal IDR is nonunique, which happens in the challenging setting of exceptional laws. We also propose a smoothed resampling procedure for inference. The proposed methods are implemented in the R-package QTOCen. This opinion paper focuses on foregrounding the issue of the hidden curriculum in L2 writing and how addressing its negative sides can greatly move forward our understanding of students’ writing learning experiences and further promote more effective and equal writing teaching. Specifically, this paper argues that the negative sides of the hidden curriculum could partially account for students’ dissatisfying writing development and unpleasant writing learning experiences and discusses its possible harm to educational effectiveness and equality. Phytoremediation of arsenic (As) by Pteris vittata (P. vittata) is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for restoring As-contaminated sites. However, the phytoextraction efficiency is low in some cases, such as clay soil, thus biochar was applied to enhance the efficiency of As extraction. The paper investigated the effect of biochar on soil characteristic, As mobility, and As uptake in P. vittata with a 90-day greenhouse experiment. Biochar derived from rice straw was added at rates of 0.5, 1.5, and 4% (w/w). The results showed that, under biochar amendment, soil pH raised from 5.24 to 6.03 and 4.91 to 5.85, soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) increased 11.1–46.1% and 2.8–11.2%, respectively, in rhizosphere and bulk soils. Biochar also increased soil catalase (CAT) activity significantly, especially for the rhizosphere soil. Besides, biochar increased the labile As in the soils and transfer coefficient from roots to aboveground, thereby enhancing As accumulation by P. vittata tissues. The accumulation of As in fronds of P. vittata was up to 350 mg kg−1 in 1.5% biochar, which was more than twice the control and far beyond other biochar treatments. The results indicate that biochar addition is favorable to improve phytoremediation of P. vittata in As-contaminated soil and 1.5% (w/w) biochar may be a reasonable application ratio, thus providing an effective solution to enhance the efficiency of As phytoextraction. Biochar increased soil catalase activity in the rhizosphere of P. vittata. Biochar increased the labile concentration of arsenic in soil and arsenic accumulation in P. vittata significantly. Food safety and food security are subjects of great concern around the world. Ensuring a sustainable supply of nutrient-dense and safe food is a grand challenge. Nanotechnology will bring great opportunities to improve food safety and enhance agricultural productivity in a sustainable way. This study presents a critical concise overview of the basic principles and applications of diverse nanotechnologies in solving food safety and security issues. Following an overview of recent work relevant to food safety issues, several key applications of nanotechnology in food packaging and contaminant detection are outlined. The important role of nanotechnology in addressing agricultural production, water resource management (such as nanofiltration and nanosterilization), harmful substance adsorption, and nutrient delivery is discussed. Finally, opportunities for further research and development in nanotechnology for food safety and security are identified. It is noteworthy that large scale industrial applications of nanotechnology are not commonplace yet as major issues of cost and potential adverse effects on human health continue to remain impediments to be overcome. Consider the fluctuation of environmental noise and the incubation period of virus, a stochastic vector-host model with incubation delay is proposed to describe the transmission of Dengue fever virus (DFVs) between humans and mosquitoes. By constructing suitable stochastic Lyapunov functional, the existence and uniqueness of global positive solutions of this model are proved. Furthermore, some sufficient conditions are obtained for the asymptotic pathwise estimation of solutions. In addition, we also consider the asymptotic pathwise estimation of solutions, the existence and uniqueness of stationary distribution of this model without delay, which imply that disease is stochastic persistent. Finally, numerical simulations explain the theoretical results and discuss the effects of stochastic perturbations and delays on DFVs transmission. Our results imply that the spread of DFVs presents many unpredictability under the influence of stochastic perturbation, and the reproduction number can no longer be used as a threshold condition for the extinction or persistence of disease. Moreover, ignoring the incubation delay will not only overestimate the risk of disease outbreaks but also underestimate the duration of diseases. An ethnically diverse society calls for an in-depth understanding of national identity construction. This study investigates the perception of Chinese national identity among a group of ethnic Tibetans living in Southwest China. It identifies an indirect relationship between Chinese media use and Chinese national identity through the mediation of media trust and the moderation of age. The moderated mediation model shows that media use does not directly affect the perception of Chinese national identity among the ethnic Tibetans. Instead, it is indirectly related to Chinese national identity via media trust. The relationship between media trust and Chinese national identity is also moderated by a respondent's age, with the relationship stronger among younger than among older respondents. The moderated mediation model is significant after controlling for respondents' gender, general education, religiosity, perceived discrimination, bilingual education and peer influence. Effective maritime accident prediction will benefit both maritime safety management and the insurance industry. Due to the complex non-linearity and non-stationarity nature of maritime accident data, its prediction is still a challenge in the research field. An autoregressive integrated moving average with explanatory variables (ARIMAX) model was proposed to predict maritime accidents accurately, and a multi-factor accident prediction framework was developed. Additionally, the impacts of eight influencing factors on the number of maritime accidents were also investigated, and the predictions from the ARIMAX model were contrasted with those from earlier maritime accident prediction models, as well as autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), back-propagation neural network (BPNN), and support vector regression (SVR). The findings imply that an increase in any one of the eight factors may increase the number of maritime accidents worldwide. The ARIMAX model, which incorporates accident factors, is accurate enough to estimate the number of global maritime accidents and outperforms the ARIMA, BPNN, and SVR models in terms of prediction precision and robustness. Studies investigating the relationship between cognitive function and academic performance have recently shifted focus from differences in intelligence to executive function. To date, these studies have focused disproportionately on samples recruited from Western countries, despite evidence in support of cultural differences in the development of executive function. To address this gap, the present study investigated whether differences in two dimensions of executive function, inhibitory and attentional control, could predict academic performance in a sample of Chinese adolescents (n = 42). Participants reported on demographic details and completed both the Simon task and Attention Network Test. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression controlling for gender, age, SES, English language proficiency, processing speed, and fluid intelligence. Results showed that one index of inhibitory control derived from non-cue trials on the Attention Network Test explained a significant amount of unique variance in academic performance. This study seeks to explore the road-crossing behavior of elderly pedestrians and whether time cues can effectively reduce the risk of crossing. Past studies on road-crossing decision-making mostly focus on the increased risk in older pedestrians due to diminished cognitive functions but often overlooked the impact of providing information about time. Therefore, this study examined the effects of assistive systems providing two different types of time information, namely, remaining time and arriving time, on road-crossing in older pedestrians under different traffic situations. The results showed that both assistive systems reduced the road-crossing response time and collision rate in older adults. In general, the "remaining time system" was more effective, especially in the combination of short vehicle gap and high vehicle speed. Remaining time was found to be more intuitive for road-crossing decision-making. These findings contribute to effective ways to reduce the risk of road crossing in elderly pedestrians. The widespread use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has led to an increased twin pregnancy rate and increased risk of pregnancy complications. Pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and maternal age are both risk factors for pregnancy complications. This study aimed to explore whether there is an interaction effect between pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal age on pregnancy complications in women with twin pregnancies after ART. Data of 445,750 women with twin pregnancies after ART were extracted from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) database in 2016-2021 in this retrospective cohort study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore (1) the associations between pre-pregnancy BMI, maternal age, and total pregnancy complications; (2) interaction effect between pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal age on total pregnancy complications; and (3) this interaction effect in parity, race, gestational weight gain (GWG), and preterm birth subgroups. The evaluation indexes were odds ratios (ORs), relative excess risk of interaction (RERI), attributable proportions of interaction (AP), and synergy index (S) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 6,827 women had pregnancy complications. After adjusting for the covariates, compared with women had non-AMA and pre-pregnancy BMI <25 kg/m2, higher maternal age combined with higher pre-pregnancy BMI was associated with higher odds of total pregnancy complications [OR = 2.16, 95%CI: (1.98-2.36)]. The RERI (95% CI) was 0.22 (0.04-0.41), AP (95% CI) was 0.10 (0.02-0.19), and S (95% CI) was 1.24 (1.03-1.49). Subgroup analysis results indicated that the potential additive effect between pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal age on total pregnancy complications was also found in women with different race, multipara/unipara, GWG levels, or preterm births/non-preterm births (all p < 0.05). Breakthroughs in biotechnology, globalizing intellectual property rights legislations, and growing venture capital in the past thirty years have given rise to new forms of capitalist accumulation that scholars called biocapitalism. Bioscientific knowledge under biocapitalism is increasingly parceled out from a global common to private enclosures for biotech and pharmaceutical companies, contributing to vast inequalities and fractures of global access to innovation evident in the COVID-19 pandemic. The assetization and financialization of knowledge have shifted the ground of innovation from competitive commodity production and exchanges to generating, managing, and commercializing patents and associated monopoly rights, thus raising the challenges of innovation for those developing countries specialized in production. Many Asian countries have invested heavily in biomedical sciences to enhance their knowledge assets but had limited success in translating the scientific development to a globally significant biomedical industry. This article discusses the evolution of China's biomedical industry from a technological laggard to a recent innovation boom after a regulatory overhaul in 2015. Analyzing the patent collaborative networks of China's biomedical industry since 2003, we found the central roles of domestic public research institutions, in contrast to multinational corporations, as cutting-edge knowledge providers. We argue that China's path of the biomedical industry is distinct from its other technology industries that rely on multinational corporations for core knowledge. It represents a national articulation in response to global biocapitalism by situating the domestic research institutions and biomedical firms at the center of knowledge assets production and engaging globally in the science and drug regulatory systems. The application of foam drilling fluid in CBM drilling is constrained by the deterioration of foam stability in complex formation conditions. This article proposed introducing nanoparticles with different wettability into system. The results showed that hydrophilic silica nanoparticles can effectively improve foam quality of the amphoteric foaming agent BS-12. It was due to that hydrophilic silica nanoparticles could block both the direction of gas diffusion and gravity drainage path to the foam liquid membrane surface. Interestingly, particle size distribution of foams also changed from "single-peaked" to "double-peaked," which contributed to the sealing effect of foams on the microfractures in the formation. Moreover, the response surface method was adopted to optimize the dosing of drilling fluid additives and to analyze the interaction of additive dosing on the comprehensive index Fq of foams. The result of the evaluation experiments suggested that it can reduce the linear expansion rate of upper strata shale by 65% and increase the recovery rate of coal rock core by 53%. In addition, the gas permeability recovery rate of the coal core was above 90%. These findings are dedicated to promoting the application of foam drilling fluid in CBM drilling. To evaluate the impact of F in soil on seed germination, growth performance and biochemical parameters of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), a pot experiment was conducted by amending soil with 0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg F kg−1 spiked soil. During aging of exogenous F in soil, an increase in the soil pH and concentrations of all F fractions was noted at elevated F concentrations. Fluorine in the soil was mainly found in the residual fraction (88% and 86%). The results of pot experiment revealed that the percentages of seed germination rate, chlorophylls concentration, and the dry biomass of Chinese cabbage and oilseed rape decreased by 31, 23, 16%, and 24, 38, 31%, respectively, as compared with their respective controls. The free proline concentration increased by 40% for Chinese cabbage and by 151% for oilseed rape. It was observed that F mainly accumulated in the roots of both plants, and the bioaccumulation factor and translocation factor remained <1. The processing of the proximal and distal poly(A) sites in alternative polyadenylation (APA) has long been thought to independently occur on pre-mRNAs during transcription. However, a recent study by our groups demonstrated that the proximal sites for many genes could be activated sequentially following the distal ones, suggesting a multi-cleavage-same-transcript mode beyond the canonical one-cleavage-per-transcript view. Here, we review the established mechanisms for APA regulation and then discuss the additional insights into APA regulation from the perspective of sequential polyadenylation, resulting in a unified leverage model for understanding the mechanisms of regulated APA. Dimethyl itaconate (DMI) is an analog of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), an approved NF-E2-related Factor 2 (Nrf2) activator for multiple sclerosis. This study evaluated the potential of DMI as an anti-inflammatory agent by comparing DMI with DMF in electrophilicity, Nrf2 activation, and anti-inflammation in vitro. The results showed that DMI was less electrophilic but better at inducing a durable activation of Nrf2 when compared with DMF. However, DMI demonstrated poor anti-inflammatory effects in Jurkat cells, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells, and RAW264.7 cells. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder related to abnormal keratinocyte proliferation. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are significant regulators in the progression of skin diseases. In this study, we explored how lncRNA MALAT-1 controls the pathogenesis of psoriasis by examining its impact on keratinocyte proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis. A psoriasis cell model was established by treating HaCaT keratinocytes with the inflammatory factor, IL-22 (100 ng/ml), for 24 h. The MALAT-1 and S100A7 levels in psoriatic lesions, normal skin tissues, and IL-22-stimulated HaCaT cells were determined by RT–qPCR and western blotting. Cell proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis were detected by the MTT assay, western blotting, and flow cytometry analysis, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis was used to identify the miRNAs that bind to MALAT-1 and S100A7. The relationships between MALAT-1 or miR-330-5p and S100A7 were assessed using a luciferase reporter assay. The MALAT-1 and S100A7 levels were upregulated in both psoriatic lesion samples and IL-22-stimulated HaCaT cells. Silencing MALAT-1 significantly reversed the IL-22-stimulated promotion of HaCaT proliferation and changes in Ki67 and KRT5/14/1/10 protein levels, and MALAT-1 deficiency also reversed the upregulation of TNF-α, IL-17, and IL-23 protein levels as well as suppression of cell apoptosis. As a ceRNA, MALAT-1 competed with S100A7 to prevent miR-330-5p-induced inhibition of S100A7 expression. There was a negative correlation between miR-330-5p and MALAT-1 (or S100A7) expression in psoriatic lesion tissues. In response to IL-22 treatment, miR-330-5p silencing eliminated the effects of MALAT-1 knockdown in HaCaT cells. Objectives: To investigate the effects of the human chromosomal segregation 1-like (CSE1L) gene on the biological behaviour of human placental cells.Study Design: The CSE1L gene plays important roles in chromosome segregation during mitosis, cell proliferation and apoptosis. We used MTT, Cellomics, cell colony formation and flow cytometry assays in this study.Results: CSE1L mRNA was significantly increased in human placental cells (JAR) and decreased when CSE1L was knocked down. Lentiviral CSE1L knockdown reduced cell proliferation (p < .05) and colony formation (p = .00) and induced apoptosis (p < .000). CSE1L knockdown inhibited the G0/G1 phase (p = .00) and increased the G2/M phase (p = .00) of the cell cycle, but no significant change in the S phase was observed (p = .158).Conclusion: The CSE1L protein is expressed in human placental carcinoma cells, and its knockdown altered biological behaviours, implying that the CSE1L gene may affect human placental formation and even foetal development. Depression is known to be one of the most common mental disorders raising global concerns. However, evidence regarding the association between short-term air pollution exposure and risk of development of depression is limited. The aim of this was to assess the relationship between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and depression in outpatient visits in Xi'an, a northwestern Chinese metropolis. Data for air pollutants including particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels from October 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013 and number of daily depression outpatient visits (92,387 in total) were collected. A time-series quasi-Poisson regression model was adopted to determine the association between short-term air pollutant concentrations and frequency of outpatient visits for depression with different lag models. Consequently, 10 μg/m3 increase of SO2 and NO2 levels corresponded to significant elevation in number of outpatient-visits for depression on concurrent days (lag 0), and this relationship appeared stronger in cool seasons (October to March). However, the association of PM10 was only significant in males aged 30–50 at lag 0. Evidence indicated that short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants especially in cool seasons might be associated with increased risk of outpatient visits for depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractFor achieving high separation efficiency and a large throughput in the nuclear fuel reprocessing industry, it is crucial to have a profound understanding of the flooding characteristics in pulsed disc and doughnut extraction columns (PDDCs). For this purpose, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was utilized to obtain predictive equations that provide high applicability and analytical convenience. The effects of three operating conditions (dispersed-phase velocity, continuous-phase velocity, and pulse intensity) on the hydrodynamic parameters (dispersed phase holdup, slip velocity, characteristic velocity, and flooding point) were studied in a Φ50 PDDC in the kerosene-water system.The LASSO method was applied to select highly correlated features of the hydrodynamic parameters and to propose second-order prediction equations. The effectiveness of LASSO was also compared to the published correlations and traditional linear regression. The second-order-regression of LASSO produced more intuitive prediction equations with the mean relative error within 15%. The impact of each operating variable on the hydrodynamic parameters was quantitatively analyzed by calculating the partial derivatives of these prediction equations. The dispersed-phase flow rate predominantly affects the holdup within the operating conditions. As internet privacy concern (IPC) keeps spiking, it is imperative to reexamine privacy concern among social media users in a cross-cultural context. Using the purposive sampling method, this study recruited 1,340 social media users aged 18–82 in the United State and China. It integrates medium theory and cultural perspectives to study IPC by analyzing the technological antecedents of social media use among young users who grew up with social media and their "digital immigrant" parents who did not. U.S. and Chinese respondents were concerned about IPC regardless of their genders. Young people reported a lower IPC level than elder users. IPC was negatively related to social media power use, but not to social media habitual use. Some cultural differences were revealed. Among those aged 18–25, U.S. users had significantly lower IPC than their Chinese counterparts. In those aged 50+, little difference concerning IPC existed between U.S. and Chinese users. This study represents the first attempt of integrating both technology and cultural perspectives to examine internet privacy concern. The findings, including one's cultural background moderating the association between social media power use and IPC, should contribute to a better understanding of privacy concerns in a cross-cultural setting. Application of the electric field to water-in-oil system can accelerate the coalescence of droplets. However, when an excessively high electric field is applied, droplets will exhibit break-up behavior. In addition to the strength of the electric field, the salt type in droplets significantly affects their break-up behavior. However, the break-up behavior of droplets containing the same valence cation is rarely investigated, and the mechanism underlying the influence of ionic type remains unclear. In this study, the break-up behavior of droplets containing chlorine salt with the same valence cation is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The influences of electric field strength and ionic type on the break-up behavior of droplets are analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the droplet deformation increases with the increase in the electric field, and the droplets break when the degree of deformation exceeds a critical value. The ionic type mainly affects the break-up time of droplets through drift velocity, which is proportional to the electric field strength and ionic mobility. The glycemic indices (GI) of pea and chickpea are normally lower than 60, which are commonly considered as middle or low GI foods. Different processing conditions would influence proportions of rapidly digestible starch (RDS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), and resistant starch (RS) in the processed pea and chickpea. In general, high-temperature cooking followed by high-temperature drying (HCHD) largely kept total starch (68.58% and 61.99% of dry matter in pea and chickpea, respectively), increased RDS (29.89% and 33.40% of total starch in pea and chickpea, respectively) and RS proportions (25.78% and 17.08% of total starch in pea and chickpea, respectively) while the opposite effect in pea and chickpea was observed. Glycemic response of panelists after consuming HCHD pea or chickpea would cause a faster increase of incremental plasma glucose concentration within 30 min, followed by a rapid decrease to baseline compared with the pea or chickpea processed by low-temperature cooking followed by lowtemperature drying (LCLD). The GI of HCHD pea and chickpea were 59.02 and 49.15, respectively, which were significantly higher than those processed by LCLD (pea: 32.63, chickpea: 31.91). The homogeneous errors-in-variables (HEIV) model is extended from the regular EIV model for a more wide range of applications. Necessary constraints are imposed to avoid trivial solution or provide ancillary information of parameters. For the constrained HEIV (CHEIV) model with linearly structured data matrix, a generic constrained homogeneous weighted total least squares (CHWTLS) algorithm based on Newton method is derived by assuming the measurements are mutually correlated. An approximate accuracy assessment method is proposed with first order approximation by treating the CHEIV model as a constrained Gauss-Helmert problem. A quadratic constrained HEIV model frequently encountered in fitting and photogrammetry task is proposed as a specific CHEIV model, and a simpler WTLS method based on iterative singular value decomposition (SVD) is developed. A typical two dimensional rectangular building reconstruction problem is simulated to demonstrate the advantages of the homogeneous EIV model and the proposed WTLS algorithms in overcoming the possible ill-posedness and enhancing the numerical efficiency compared with the regular one. Air pollution has become a serious environmental problem causing severe consequences in our ecology, climate, health, and urban development. Effective and efficient monitoring and mitigation of air pollution require a comprehensive understanding of the air pollution process through a reliable database carrying important information about the spatiotemporal variations of air pollutant concentrations at various spatial and temporal scales. Traditional analysis suffers from the severe insufficiency of data collected by only a few stations. In this study, we propose a rigorous framework for the integration of air pollutant concentration data coming from the ground-based stations, which are spatially sparse but temporally dense, and mobile sensors, which are spatially dense but temporally sparse. Background: Patients with Meniere's disease (MD) may present with peripheral vestibular end organ dysfunction and balance dysfunction. Objective: This study aimed to compare the results of vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) tests with those of the sensory organization test (SOT) in patients with MD to determine whether they are correlated. Material and methods: In total, 132 patients with unilateral MD were evaluated using an audiometric test, the SOT, a caloric test and VEMP tests. Results: Cervical VEMP and ocular VEMP tests were conducted in 132 patients with MD, and the response rates of the affected side were lower than those of the unaffected side. The composite score, C5ES, and C6ES of the SOT were significantly decreased in patients with no VEMP responses compared to those with VEMP responses. Conclusions and significance: MD patients with no VEMP responses are more likely to develop balance impairment than those with VEMP responses. Purpose: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) involved in asthmatic airway remodeling. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an epithelial-derived cytokine, was a key component in airway immunological response in asthma. But the role of TSLP in the EMT process was unknown. We aimed to access whether TSLP could induce EMT in airway epithelia and its potential mechanism. Materials and Methods: Human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells were incubated with TSLP or transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) or both. SB431542 was used to block TGF-β1 signal while TSLP siRNA was used to performed TSLP knockdown. Changes in E-cadherin, vimentin, collagen I and fibronectin level were measured by real-time PCR, western blot and immunofluorescence staining. Expressions of TGF-β after TSLP administration were measured by real-time PCR, western blot and ELISA. Results: TSLP induced changes of EMT relevant markers alone and promoted TGF-β1-induced EMT in HBEs. Intracellular and extracellular expression of TGF-β1 were upregulated by TSLP. SB431542 blocked changes of EMT relevant markers induced by TSLP. Knockdown of TSLP not only reduced TSLP and TGF-β1 expression but also inhibited changes of EMT relevant markers induced by TGF-β1 in HBEs. Conclusions: TSLP could induce early stage of EMT in airway epithelial cells through upregulation of TGF-β1. This effect may act as a targeting point for suppression of asthma. Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are a class of disinfection by-products (DBPs), widely occurring in drinking water, wastewater and swimming pool water with concentrations at sub-μg/L to mid-μg/L levels. HAAs arose public attention due to their cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Monitoring HAA concentration levels in aqueous environments is required. This review presents an overview of all techniques or methods for sample pretreatment, analysis and removal of HAAs in aqueous environments since 2000. For the pretreatment methods, the commonly used methods are compared and discussed in terms of advantages and drawbacks. Microextraction techniques are preferred as they are efficient, rapid and environment-friendly. Emerging pretreatment methods, such as techniques based on novel materials or liquids, have also been introduced. For the analytical methods, LC and GC coupled with various detectors are frequently used allowing detection at the required low μg/L levels in aquatic environments. The advances in mass spectrometers (MS) and a comparison between their pros and cons are summarized herein. Recent high resolution MS gave give mass accuracy of 0.0001 Da with a resolving power up to 140,000 full width at half maximum height improving feature identifications in nontargeted analyses. For HAA removal methods, advanced oxidation techniques, adsorption and biodegradation were updated, improved and upscaled. Combining two or more removal techniques, the efficiency can reach 99%. This study aimed to investigate the motivations for Chinese patients seeking operative labiaplasty. Data was collected from January 2018 to December 2019 using a standardized questionnaire, which examined factors influencing patients' motivations, including aesthetic and functional reasons, as well as psychological factors. Of the 216 patients who responded to the questionnaire within 24 months, 22.2% cited cosmetic reasons, while 38.4% reported functional discomfort. Both functional and aesthetic reasons were cited by 35.2% of patients, while 4.2% reported psychological troubles. It is noteworthy that patients who sought surgical intervention for physical complaints did so as a personal decision, and only 6.3% of patients seeking labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons were influenced by their sexual partner. Additionally, 7.9% and 66.7% of patients with other motivations were influenced by their male spouse, while 2.6% and 33.3% were influenced by the media. In conclusion, this study suggests that most Chinese patients seek labiaplasty for functional reasons, with few being influenced by sexual partners or media. What is already known on this subject? The growing demand and interest in labiaplasty surgery has been widely acknowledged. Existing reports from western countries have highlighted that aesthetic concerns are the primary motivations behind patients' requests for this surgical intervention. However, there is limited information available regarding the factors influencing Chinese patients' decisions to undergo labiaplasty, as China has a large population. The accurate prediction of the extraction behaviors of various solutes in PUREX reprocessing process is crucial for the operation and implementation of the actual process. In this paper, an integrated model is developed to predict the extraction behaviors of U, Np, Pu, and HNO3 in the co-decontamination step (1A extraction step) in a pulsed extraction column. The model couples several physical and chemical processes, such as countercurrent flow, mass transfer, and chemical reaction. The mass transfer coefficients and the distribution ratios of U(VI), Pu(IV), Np(IV), Np(V), Np(VI), HNO3 and HNO2 can be obtained using this model. In particular, the redox and disproportion reactions of Np are considered in the model, and the flow direction of Np can be judged under various process conditions and the corresponding influential factors can be analyzed. The judgment is based on the yield calculated from the relative concentration profiles of Np(VI), Np(V), and Np(IV) in the two phases. For neptunium to inter 1AP step, it is necessary to select high nitric acid concentration, low nitrite concentration and especially high flow ratio. For neptunium to inter 1AW step, low nitric acid concentration, high nitrite concentration and low flow ratio are needed. Compared with the experimental data, the relative errors of the distribution ratios of various solutes are less than 30%, and the relative errors of the concentrations of U(VI) and Pu(IV) at the outlet of the organic phase are less than 10%, and our model is indicated to be reliable and applicable for co-decontamination step in the PUREX reprocessing process. Context: Epidermal cells play an important role in regulating the regeneration of skin after burns and wounds. Objective: The aim of our study is to explore the role of Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) in the apoptosis of epidermal HaCaT cells induced by H2O2, with a focus on mitochondrial homeostasis and inverted formin-2 (INF2). Materials and methods: Cellular viability was determined using the MTT assay, TUNEL staining, western blot analysis and LDH release assay. Adenovirus-loaded INF2 was transfected into HaCaT cells to overexpress INF2 in the presence of Tan IIA treatment. Mitochondrial function was determined using JC-1 staining, mitochondrial ROS staining, immunofluorescence and western blotting. Results: Oxidative stress promoted the death of HaCaT cells and this effect could be reversed by Tan IIA. At the molecular levels, Tan IIA treatment sustained mitochondrial energy metabolism, repressed mitochondrial ROS generation, stabilized mitochondrial potential, and blocked the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Furthermore, we demonstrated that Tan IIA modulated mitochondrial homeostasis via affecting INF2-related mitochondrial stress. Overexpression of INF2 could abolish the protective effects of Tan IIA on HaCaT cells viability and mitochondrial function. Besides, we also reported that Tan IIA regulated INF2 expression via the ERK pathway; inhibition of this pathway abrogated the beneficial effects of Tan IIA on HaCaT cells survival and mitochondrial homeostasis. Conclusions: Overall, our results indicated that oxidative stress-mediated HaCaT cells apoptosis could be reversed by Tan IIA treatment via reducing INF2-related mitochondrial stress in a manner dependent on the ERK signaling pathway. Background: Cryptorchidism is a common condition of childhood, and it is known to impair fertility potential. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Methods: This study constructed two cryptorchid rat models to investigate the roles of apoptosis and autophagy in testicular impairment induced by cryptorchidism. Pregnant rats were randomly divided into three groups. Group I: non-treated rats were used as controls. Group II: injected with drug Flutamide (Flu) 25 mg/kg/bw/d from gestation day (GD) 11-19. Group III: daily intragastric administration of 750 mg/kg/bw/d di-2-ethylhexylphosphate (DEHP) from GD 7-19. The cubs were feed normally and the testes were excised on postnatal day (PND) 30. Results: Our results demonstrated cryptorchidism models induced noticeable decreased fertility, significantly reduced sperm count, increased sperm abnormality rate, decreased testosterone and severe testicular damage in histomorphology. Intriguingly, the level of apoptosis marker FAS, Cytochrome C and caspase-3 increased in Flu-induced and DEHP-induced groups. DEHP-induced treatment simultaneously increased the number of autophagosomes and the levels of autophagy marker LC3-II and p62. Significant decrease of autophagy gene (LC3-II and p62) expression is found in Flu-induced rats testes. Conclusion: Taken together, deficient autophagy is involved in testicular spermatogenesis damage of cryptorchidism rats. And this autophagy defect is caused by deficient degradation. Finding the optimal treatment regime (or a series of sequential treatment regimes) based on individual characteristics has important applications in areas such as precision medicine, government policies, and active labor market interventions. In the current literature, the optimal treatment regime is usually defined as the one that maximizes the average benefit in the potential population. This article studies a general framework for estimating the quantile-optimal treatment regime, which is of importance in many real-world applications. Given a collection of treatment regimes, we consider robust estimation of the quantile-optimal treatment regime, which does not require the analyst to specify an outcome regression model. We propose an alternative formulation of the estimator as a solution of an optimization problem with an estimated nuisance parameter. This novel representation allows us to investigate the asymptotic theory of the estimated optimal treatment regime using empirical process techniques. We derive theory involving a nonstandard convergence rate and a nonnormal limiting distribution. The same nonstandard convergence rate would also occur if the mean optimality criterion is applied, but this has not been studied. Thus, our results fill an important theoretical gap for a general class of policy search methods in the literature. The article investigates both static and dynamic treatment regimes. In addition, doubly robust estimation and alternative optimality criterion such as that based on Gini’s mean difference or weighted quantiles are investigated. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed estimator. A data example from a trial in HIV+ patients is used to illustrate the application. In this review, an updated summary of the latest trends in pretreatment and analytical techniques for nicotine is provided. Topological insulators are always a hot topic owing to their various peculiar physical effects, which are useful in spintronics and quantum information processing. Herein, we systematically investigate the elastic, thermodynamic and lattice thermal conductivity of a new typical topological insulator LaAs by combining the first-principles approach and an iterative solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. The obtained elastic constants and other lattice structural parameters of LaAs are well consistent with the experimental and other theoretical results. For the first time, the lattice thermal conductivity (5.46 W/(m∙K)) and mean free path (14.4 nm) of LaAs are obtained，which manifests that the LaAs is more likely to be a desirable thermoelectric material. It is noted that the obtained mode-averaged Grüneisen parameters by different ab initio simulation packages are very similar, suggesting that our results are rather responsible. From the phonon scattering rates of LaAs, we speculate that the reduction of acoustic-optical gap and the larger phonon scattering may jointly result in reduction of thermal conductivity for LaAs. Meanwhile, the temperature dependence curves of the lattice thermal conductivity, heat capacity and phonon mean free path are also presented. While youth violence reduction program is a necessity to prevent long-term criminal and violent offending, its effectiveness in youth violent offenders is not well researched. This study investigated the effectiveness of the Violence Prevention Program (VPP) in addressing the aggression, anger, self-control, and empathy of youth violent offenders. One hundred and seventy youths (mean age 15.8 years) who completed VPP from 2008 to 2014 completed self-report measures on study outcomes both before and after the intervention. Repeated measures analyses revealed significant improvement in youths’ anger, aggression, and self-control at post-treatment, but changes in youths’ empathy were not significant. Subsequent analysis found that only youths with lower empathy scores at pre-treatment showed significant increase in empathy post-treatment. Overall, the results suggest that VPP can reduce aggression and mitigate the criminogenic needs of youth offenders. But its effect on empathy may be contingent on youths’ pre-treatment profiles. Amphiphilic polyurethanes based on methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) and poly(ϵ-caprolactone) diol (PCL) with different arm numbers such as two, three and four were successfully synthesized. Their structures were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effects of arm number on properties of amphiphilic polyurethanes were studied. Pyrene fluorescence probe technique and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses showed that the CMC value and the micellar size of the resultant amphiphilic polyurethanes decreased and the micellar stability against dilution enhanced with increasing the arm number of polyurethane. Using indometacin (IMC) as a model drug, the results indicated that the drug loading capacity and in vitro drug sustained release effect of polyurethane with four arms were better than those of polyurethanes with two and three arms. Aminoglycosides, as effective, broad-spectrum antibiotics, have been widely used in animal husbandry. These antibiotics can cause potential hazards to human health, as they can accumulate through the food chain. To obtain a better control of food quality and safety, developing effective and sensitive methods for the pretreatment and determination of aminoglycosides is essential. This review aims at elucidating on the health risk-toxicology of aminoglycosides in food and to provide a comprehensive overview of aminoglycosides pretreatment and detection methods since 2010. Urine-powered microbial fuel cells (UMFCs) can recover energy from urine, a typical constituent of urban wastewater. Three-dimensional (3D) structure is advantageous for improving the anode performance, especially using carbon nanotube (CNT), which has good biocompatibility. It is proposed in this paper to use 3D carbon nanotube sponge (3DCS), which has a proper size of pores as anodes for UMFCs. The maximum output voltage is as high as 231.89 mV, and the power density is 1.24 W m−3(per anode volume). The results show that 3DCS is a good choice for fabricating 3D anode for UMFCs. Breast cancer (BC) patients in China suffered from a variety of psychology stress such as perceived stress and anxiety, posttraumatic growth (PTG) as a positive factor could promote their psychology health and quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on promoting PTG, decreasing perceived stress and anxiety of Chinese BC patients. A randomized controlled trial of 60 BC patients (Stages I–III) was conducted. They were randomly divided to the 8-week MBSR group or usual care (UC) group. PTG inventory, Perceived Stress Scale of Chinese version (CPSS) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) evaluated the PTG level, perceived stress and anxiety at three times(before intervention-T1, after intervention-T2 and follow up at 3 months-T3). A repeated-measures analysis of variance model was used to compare each outcome measure of two groups at the three times. There was one patient discontinued the intervention and one lose to follow up in MBSR group, finally 58 BC patients completed the research. There was no difference between two groups before the intervention. The results showed significant improvements in MBSR group comparing with the UC group that PTG level was much higher after the 8-week intervention and the follow up (F = 34.73,p < .00). At the same time, CPSS (F = 14.41,p < .00) and STAI (F = 15.24,p < .00) scores were significant decreased at T2 and T3. The results showed that MBSR promoted the level of PTG and decreased perceived stress and anxiety state of Chinese BC patients, and the results persisted at three months after intervention. An adaptive multilevel correlation analysis, a kind of data-driven methodology, is proposed. The analysis is done by subdividing the time series into segments such that adjacent segments have significantly different mean values. It is shown that the proposed methodology can provide multilevel information about the correlation between two variables. An integrated coefficient with its significance testing is also proposed to summarize the correlation at each level. Using the adaptive multilevel correlation analysis methodology, the correlation between streamflow and water level is investigated for a case study, and the results indicate that real correlation might be far more complicated than the empirically constructed picture. A novel 1,8-disulfonamidocarbazole-dipyrromethane Schiff-base macrocycle (1) and its amine analogue (2) were designed and synthesised, and their anion binding properties were studied via UV–vis and1H NMR titration spectra. The obtained results showed that a small change in the macrocyclic structure (by reducing imines into the corresponding amines) produced a remarkable impact on its binding affinity and selectivity for anions. Pregnancy is not recommended for patients with severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to the significant risks it poses to both the mother and fetus. The objective of this study is to describe the maternal-fetal outcomes in pregnant women with PH and identify the factors that influence these outcomes. This retrospective study analyzed clinical data from 25 patients with severe PH who were admitted to our hospital between January 2018 and December 2022. The data we used came from a public general hospital in Fujian Province. The mean systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) of 25 patients was 105.12 ± 22.70 mmHg. All patients had received one or more multidisciplinary team (MDT) treatments before terminating their pregnancies. Among the pregnant women, four experienced a pulmonary hypertensive crisis (PHC), seven had heart failure, and one had postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Among them, seven (28%) pregnant women died primarily due to heart failure and PHC. Among the fetal outcomes, twelve resulted in therapeutic abortion, and eleven resulted in preterm birth. Among the perinatal complications, eleven infants (84.6%) were born prematurely, six infants (46.2%) experienced neonatal asphyxia, eight infants (61.5%) had low birth weight, and two infants (15.4%) died during the perinatal period. According to the etiology, seven individuals had idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (iPAH), ten had pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease (CHD-PAH), six had pulmonary hypertension associated with left heart disease (LDH-PH), and two had pulmonary arterial hypertension caused by other diseases (oPAH). The sPAP levels of iPAH and CHD-PAH were significantly higher than those of LDH-PH and oPAH (p < 0.05). Additionally, the gestational weeks of LDH-PH were higher than those of iPAH (p < 0.05). The number of patients with New York Heart Association (NYHA) heart function grade III-V was higher in the death group compared to the non-death group (p < 0.05). Pregnancy in women with severe PH carries a high risk of mortality. Therefore, contraception is strongly recommended for these women. For this reason, this paper sets out to make a comprehensive review of the preparation and determination methods for PPIs based on multiple matrices since 2010.
