We examined whether positive emotions interacted with task instructions and topic beliefs to influence processing and memory of a dual-position text. Participants provided emotion and belief ratings, were instructed to focus on one position in a dual-position text while reading silently (Experiment 1) or thinking-aloud (Experiment 2), and then orally remembered the text. Independently of beliefs, higher positive emotion was associated with assimilative processes (backward inferences and elaborations). However, participants with higher positive emotion used more inferential processes for belief-consistent text, but spent more time reading and rehearsing belief-inconsistent text. Participants with lower positive emotion used more inferential processes for belief-inconsistent text, but spent more time reading and rehearsing belief-consistent text. Finally, participants in all groups provided supportive evaluations for belief-consistent text and refutational evaluations for belief-inconsistent text. Relational memory (RM) is severely impaired in schizophrenia. Unitisation can circumvent RM impairments in clinical populations as measured by the transverse-patterning (TP) task, a well-established measure of RM capacity. We compared memory performance on a new ecological RM measure, the Relational Trip Task (RTT), to that of TP at baseline and examined the effects of a unitisation intervention in RTT performance. RTT involves learning relational information of real-life stimuli, such as the relationship between people and places or objects. TP and RTT performances were examined in 45 individuals with schizophrenia. TP-impaired participants (n = 22) were randomised to either the intervention or an active control group. TP and RTT were administered again after unitisation training. Task validity and reliability were assessed. Intervention group's pre- and post-RTT accuracies were compared and contrasted to that in the control group. RTT and TP were moderately correlated. TP non-learners had inferior performance in RTT at baseline. Improvement in RTT performance after unitisation training was observed in the intervention group; no pre–post improvement was observed in the control group. RTT has an acceptable criterion validity and excellent alternate-form reliability. Unitisation seemed to be successfully generalized to support associations of real-life stimuli. We examined behavioral and electrophysiological indices of self-referential and valence processing during a Self-Referential Encoding Task in 9- to 12-year-old children, followed by surprise memory tasks for self- and other-referential trait adjectives. Participants endorsed more positive than negative self-referential information but equally endorsed positive and negative information about the other character. Children demonstrated enhanced parietal LPP amplitudes in response to self- compared to other-referential trait adjectives. Positive and negative information was differentially remembered depending on the order of the referent cues presented, suggesting that social information undergoes differential consolidation processes depending on the referent and the order of presentation. The rise of mobile usage, as well as increasing amount of information, contributes to the individual's inattention to ads and multitasking behavior. In many situations, multitasking has taken attention away from advertising messages, leading to a decrease in message effectiveness. Nonetheless, previous research has shown a potential benefit of multitasking on memory because, in some situations, multitasking could reduce mind wandering, which is a hidden distraction in ad processing. This research compares how different types of secondary tasks (cognitive vs. perceptual) affect ad memory. The results showed that a low perceptual load secondary task increased memory about ad content while decreasing mind wandering. Although incidental learning (IL) routinely occurs in everyday life, it is infrequently assessed during neuropsychological evaluations. This study aimed to further examine the concurrent validity of IL measures based on the Vocabulary and Similarities subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV). Participants included 43 Veterans referred for outpatient neuropsychological testing. Performances on the IL procedures correlated strongly with performances on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status Immediate and Delayed Recall Indices (r = .48 to r = .78). These results indicate that the IL procedures from selected WAIS-IV subtests provided an efficient and valid measure of memory. In particular, the task based on the Similarities subtest provided exceptionally high value as a screen for memory problems. These IL procedures, which require minimal additional administration time, capitalize on the semantic encoding that is inherent in completing the Vocabulary and Similarities subtests, and offer a complementary approach to standard memory assessment. The present study adopted the retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) effect to determine whether semantic representation might favour the enactment effect, in which noun-verb phrases are remembered better by enacting during learning (subject-performed tasks, SPTs) than by studying verbally (verbal tasks, VTs). Experiment 1 controlled the semantic category to investigate the RIF effect in SPT vs. VT conditions. The RIF effect was similar irrespective of the mode of encoding (SPT vs.VT), indicating that semantic representation was not the main factor for favouring the enactment effect. Furthermore, Experiment 2 added motor physical properties to simultaneously control the semantic category and one category by motor features. The results of Experiment 2 showed stronger cooperative representation of semantic and motor information under the VT condition, indicating that the processing of action memory may be conceptual. The distinctiveness effect refers to the memorial benefit of processing unique or item-specific features of a memory set relative to a non-distinctive control. Traditional distinctiveness effects are accounted for based on qualitative differences in how distinctive items are encoded and subsequently retrieved. This study evaluates whether a separate species of distinctiveness – statistical distinctiveness – may provide an additional benefit to memory beyond traditional task-based processes. Statistical distinctiveness refers to the relative frequency with which a specific memory item or set is processed. The current study examined the presence of statistical distinctiveness through a series of levels-of-processing mixed groups in which related lists were studied using two of the following three tasks to promote either shallow ("E" identification), neutral (reading silently), or deep/distinctive (pleasantness ratings) processing followed by a recognition test. Participants studied lists in which these tasks were used frequently (80% of lists), equally (50% of lists), or infrequently (20% of lists). No recognition advantage was found when tasks were completed infrequently versus frequently. Instead, recognition was greatest for the deeper/more distinctive task – a pattern consistent with an encoding but not a statistical distinctiveness account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies have shown that the presence of psychosocial stress impairs the ability to retrieve episodic memories, which raise questions about the specific cognitive processes that underlie this impairment. Here, we tested the hypothesis that stress targets retrieval processes needed to reliability discriminate previously learned from new information within episodic memory, pattern separation processing by measuring the effects of retrieval-induced stress on a modified version of the Mnemonic Similarity Task. In a two-part between-subjects design, all participants studied a series of object images in an initial testing session. In a second session, held 24 h later, half of the participants completed a stress induction task (stress group) and half performed a similarly structured but non-stressful task (control group) and all were then given a recognition memory test for the previously studied images which included new images similar to those studied (lures), and images that were completely novel (foils). Both groups performed equally well in terms of overall recognition memory, but the stress group was significantly impaired in discriminating new and similar (lure) items from studied items. This pattern of results suggests that stress specifically targets pattern separation processing when retrieving information from episodic memory. The technological advancement that is rapidly taking place in today's society allows increased opportunity for "cognitive offloading" by storing information in external devices rather than relying on internal memory. This opens the way to fundamental questions regarding the interplay between internal and external memory and the potential benefits and costs of placing information in the external environment. This article reports the results of three pre-registered online experiments investigating the consequences of prior cognitive offloading on A) subsequent unaided ability, and B) strategic decisions whether to engage in future cognitive offloading. We administered a web-based task requiring participants to remember delayed intentions for a brief period and manipulated the possibility of setting reminders to create an external cue. Earlier cognitive offloading had little effect upon individuals' subsequent unaided ability, leading to a small and nonsignificant drop in subsequent performance. However, there was a strong effect on participants' subsequent likelihood of setting reminders. These findings suggest that the short-term impact of cognitive offloading is more likely to be seen on individuals' strategy choices rather than basic memory processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In three experiments we investigated whether memory-independent evaluative conditioning (EC) and other memory-independent contingency learning (CL) effects occur in the valence contingency task (VCT). In the VCT, participants respond to the valence of a target word that is preceded by a nonword. Across trials, each nonword is mostly combined with either positive or negative targets. Schmidt and De Houwer (2012. Contingency learning with evaluative stimuli. Experimental Psychology, 59, 175–182. doi:) showed faster and more often correct responses on trials that conformed to this contingency. Additionally, the authors found EC on valence ratings assessed after the VCT. All effects occurred also in the absence of contingency memory. Our Experiments 1a and 1b replicated the CL effects on measures assessed during the VCT (RT, errors) and showed that they occurred in the absence of contingency memory, but they did not replicate the EC effect assessed after the VCT. In Experiment 2, we tested whether this dissociation between EC and other CL effects was due to the different phases (during vs. after VCT) with a CL measure that could be used in both phases. On this measure, the CL effect was memory-dependent after, but not during the VCT. Across measures and experiments, we thus find memory-independent CL during the VCT, but not afterwards. We use an old-new recognition memory task to investigate the correlates of high and low decision confidence throughout all stages of the memory process. Group-level ERP analysis and single-trial and single-subject classification are performed on four stages of the task (information encoding, retrieval, old/new decision formation, and evaluative feedback processing). The study shows that decision confidence is significantly reflected on a group, as well as on a single-trial basis, in all investigated stages at the neural level, except during encoding. The most pronounced differences between high and low confidence can be found in the ERPs during feedback presentation after a correct answer, whereas almost no differences can be found following a wrong answers. In the feedback stage, the two levels of confidence can be separated with classification accuracies of up to 70 % on average, therefore showing potential to be used as a control state in a BCI application. The effectiveness of banner advertisements has gained considerable attention among academics and practitioners. Despite the research progress in investigating the effect of banner properties (e.g., animation and location) on user perception and behavior, there is still a very limited understanding of how the properties of a banner and the surroundings of a website on which a banner is displayed can jointly influence its effectiveness. This study used eye-tracking technology to investigate the impact of banner animation and webpage complexity on users' attention and memory performance. The results show that, during a free browsing task, an animated banner can attract earlier, greater, and more frequent attention from users and lead to better memory performance than a static one. Similarly, a banner on a low-complexity webpage also attracts earlier and more frequent attention among users and results in better memory performance than that on a high-complexity webpage. One implication is that an animated banner or a banner on a low-complexity webpage can provide a promising means of attracting users' attention and enhancing their memory of the banners. Moreover, this study finds an interaction effect between banner animation and webpage complexity on the time to first fixation on a banner, but not on the total numbers or duration of fixations on a banner, or users' memory performance. The finding highlights that an animated banner on a low-complexity website can be the most effective means to shorten the time to first fixation and quickly attract users' attention. However, it cannot be deemed the most effective in generating greater and more frequent fixations on a banner, or leading to superior user memory performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was previously shown that words representing living things are better remembered than those representing nonliving things. Here we address the influence of animacy on novel word memory formation in adults, dissecting its effect on semantic and orthographic learning. Participants received training on a set of new picture-name-description mappings corresponding to animate or inanimate items, simulating word learning in the first language. The integration of novel words was indexed in a semantic judgment task, performed at 30 min or 48 h after learning. Results show that novel word forms and meanings corresponding to animate items are better recalled than inanimate ones. In addition, animate items are processed faster than inanimate items in a semantic judgment task 30 min after learning, while the speed advantage is not evident in the long-term. Thus, animacy is a pervasive memory enhancer during novel word acquisition but its effects on lexical processing are short-lived. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, we have shown that two types of initial testing (recall of a list or guessing of critical items repeated over 12 study/test cycles) improved final recognition of related and unrelated word lists relative to restudy. These benefits were eliminated, however, when test instructions were manipulated within subjects and presented after study of each list, procedures designed to minimise expectancy of a specific type of upcoming test [Huff, Balota, & Hutchison, 2016. The costs and benefits of testing and guessing on recognition memory. We follow-up these experiments by examining test-expectancy processes in guessing and testing. Testing and guessing benefits over restudy were not found when test instructions were presented either after (Experiment 1) or before (Experiment 2) a single study/task cycle was completed, nor were benefits found when instructions were presented before study/task cycles and the task was repeated three times (Experiment 3). Testing and guessing benefits emerged only when instructions were presented before a study/task cycle and the task was repeated six times (Experiments 4A and 4B). These experiments demonstrate that initial testing and guessing can produce memory benefits in recognition, but only following substantial task repetitions which likely promote task-expectancy processes. Learning and memory abilities tend to decline as people age. The current study examines the question of whether a learning situation that emphasises collaborative social interaction might help older persons overcome age-related learning and memory changes and thus perform similarly to younger persons. Younger and Older participants (n= 34 in each group) completed the Barrier Task (BT), a game-like social interaction where partners work together to develop labels for a set of abstract tangrams. Participants were also administered standard clinical neuropsychological measures of memory, on which the Older group showed expected inferiority to the Younger group. On the BT, the Older group performed less well than the Younger group early on, but as the task progressed, the performance of the Older group caught up and became statistically indistinguishable from that of the Younger group. These results can be taken to suggest that a learning milieu characterised by collaborative social interaction can attenuate some of the typical memory disadvantages associated with being older.
