To investigate determinants of willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, core affect regarding using telerehabilitation, and digital competencies in rehabilitation professionals in Austria and Germany before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional paper-based and online survey was conducted before and during COVID-19, respectively, with three cohorts of rehabilitation professionals. Outcomes were the willingness to adopt telerehabilitation evaluated using the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology; willingness of technology use using the short scale for assessing the willingness of technology use; digital competencies and core affect using the Digital Competence Framework and semantic differential, respectively. Multivariate ordinal regression analysis was performed to determine predictors. Included were 603 rehabilitation professionals. Analysis revealed differences between Austria and Germany and before and during the pandemic for most outcomes. German residency, the pandemic, and a higher educational level were most important predictors of higher willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, digital competencies, and positive core affect. The pandemic increased most aspects of willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, digital competencies, and positive core affect. Results confirm that rehabilitation professionals with higher degrees are more prone to adopt innovations in healthcare.Registration: German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00021464) The willingness to adopt telerehabilitation is associated with external factors increasing the need for alternative rehabilitation delivery, such as COVID-19, and with financial facilitators, such as reimbursement. In this paper, we study the empirical likelihood and estimation of parameters of interest in a partially linear varying coefficient model with right censored data. Two cases are considered: censoring is independent of the covariates, and censoring depends on the covariates. The bias-corrected empirical log-likelihood ratios for the regression parameters are presented, Wilks' theorem is proved, and thus the confidence regions of the regression parameters are constructed. The estimators of parametric and nonparametric components are constructed, their asymptotic distributions are obtained, and the consistent estimators of the asymptotic variances are also given. Furthermore, the partial profile empirical log-likelihood ratios for each component of the regression parameters and the coefficient functions are constructed, and show they are asymptotically chi-squared. The obtained results can be directly used to construct the confidence regions/intervals for the regression parameters and the pointwise confidence intervals for the coefficient functions. Our approach is to directly calibrate the empirical log-likelihood ratio so that the resulting ratio is asymptotically chi-squared, undersmoothing of the coefficient functions is avoided, and existing data-driven methods can be effectively used to select the optimal bandwidth. We introduce a newly developed R package AZIAD for analysing zero-inflated or zero-altered data. Compared with existing R packages, AZIAD covers a much larger class of zero-inflated and hurdle models, including both discrete and continuous cases. It provides more accurate parameter estimates, along with the corresponding Fisher information matrix and confidence intervals. It achieves significantly larger power for model identification and selection. To facilitate the potential users, in this paper we provide detailed formulae and theoretical justifications for AZIAD, as well as new theoretical results on zero-inflated and zero-altered models. We use simulation studies to show the advantages of AZIAD functions over existing R packages and provide real data examples and executable R code to illustrate how to use our package for sparse data analysis and model selection. This paper explores the impact of phonological overlap amongst items on short term memory recall performance by manipulating the type, number and syllabic position of shared phonemes between words in a serial recall task. Roodenrys et al [Roodenrys, S., Miller., L. M., & Josifoski, N. (2022b). Phonemic interference in short-term memory contributes to forgetting but it is not due to overwriting. Two experiments are reported that further examine the nature of this interference effect. Experiment 1 varied the type and number of phonemes shared with the single syllable target word by other list words and found a single shared vowel impaired target word recall performance as much as two shared consonants. Experiment 2 altered the syllabic position of the overlapping phonemes and found shared syllabic position was necessary to impair recall of the target word. It is argued these results show that not all phonological overlap is equally detrimental and specific psycholinguistic conditions are necessary to produce interference that impairs recall performance. Consistency of word production contributes to carers' ability to understand children's speech. Reports of the proportion of words produced consistently by typically developing preschool children, however, vary widely from 17% to 87%. This paper examines the quantitative (consistency count) and qualitative (e.g. phonemic analysis) characteristics of word consistency in 96 children aged 36–60 months. Children named 15 pictures twice, in separate trials, in the same assessment session. The mean consistency of the production for the whole group was 82%. Older children were more consistent than younger children. Girls were more consistent than boys. Words produced correctly in one trial and in error in another may indicate resolving error patterns. Words produced in error in two different ways provided useful evidence about the nature of inconsistent word production in typically developing children. This paper aims to analyze the levels and trajectories of physical rehabilitation needs across five resource-poor world regions, against global and key country-specific benchmarks. This comparative, secondary cross-region analysis uses data from the Global Burden of Diseases study 2017 [1990–2017], specifically varied metrics of the Years Lived with Disability (YLD) measure from the health conditions likely benefiting from physical rehabilitation. All the resource-poor world regions had significant increases (p < 0.01) in the absolute, relative, and percentage of physical rehabilitation needs [1990–2017]. Nonetheless, The Asia-Pacific region stood out with the greatest YLD Rates (i.e., per population size) in 2017, the greatest growth in YLD Rates since 1990 (38%), and an exponential growth in the rehabilitation-sensitive YLD Rates. The Asia-Pacific region also had the greatest portion of their YLDs coming from rehabilitation-sensitive conditions (72% in 2017), closely followed by the Latin America & Caribbean (67%). Nonetheless, in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, we observed the greatest percent increases in the portion of physical rehabilitation needs among all YLDs, out of lower initial values. An overall growth but differential patterns were observed in the evolution of physical rehabilitation needs across the resource-poor world regions. Asia-Pacific and Latin America & Caribbean regions had over than two-thirds of their non-fatal health loss arising from conditions sensitive to physical rehabilitation, and important growths in rehabilitation need indicators have been observed also for South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The scale-up and strengthening of rehabilitation services and resources should be informed by needs-based data. In this paper, we explore the performance of past-tense inflection of non-verbs (NVI) in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and in typically developing controls, to investigate its accuracy as a clinical marker for Swedish-speaking children with DLD. Further, we investigate the relationship between NVI, nonword-repetition, and family history. The sample consists of 36 children with DLD (mean age 9;5 years) and 60 controls (mean age 9;2 years). The DLD group performed significantly lower than the controls on the NVI task, with a large effect size of the difference (d = 1.52). Analysis of the clinical accuracy of NVI resulted in 80.6% sensitivity and 76.6% specificity. NVI was significantly and moderately associated with nonword-repetition in the controls, but not in the DLD group. A positive family history, 80.6% in the DLD group and 6.9% in the controls, was associated with lower performance on NVI. When controlling for group (DLD and controls), a non-significant association between family history and performance on the NVI task was found. NVI is a potential clinical marker of DLD in Swedish school-aged children, but the current NVI task does not reach the level of being acceptable. In survival analysis and reliability theory, the mean past lifetime (MPL), arises in situations where the mean time elapsed since the failure of a component T, given that it has failed before time t, is of interest. For inference on the MPL function, some procedures have been proposed in the literature for the MPL function's estimator. In this paper, an empirical likelihood (EL) inference procedure of the MPL function is developed. In addition to that, we obtain the adjusted EL and mean EL confidence interval for the MPL function. The EL confidence intervals are compared through extensive simulation studies in terms of coverage probability and the average length of the confidence interval. The simulation studies showed that the proposed EL methods have better coverage probability and shorter average lengths than the normal approximation results. Introduction: For parents who have experienced childhood maltreatment, parenting an adolescent may trigger memories of abuse or neglect, intensifying parent-adolescent conflict. This paper extends an earlier report of outcomes from a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) of Tuning Relationships with Music™, an intervention for parent-adolescent dyads where parents have a trauma history and dyads are experiencing conflict, in order to look systemically at dyads' emotion regulation during their musical representation of nonverbal conflict interaction (NCI). Method: The RCT randomly allocated 26 parent-adolescent dyads into intervention or control conditions, and analysed dyads' self-report and observation measures completed at baseline and 4-month post-baseline follow-up. Aims of the current paper were (1) to examine relationships between parents' trauma history, parent-adolescent conflict, parents' reactivity and responsiveness, and dyads' emotion regulation, consistency and predictability during NCI; and (2) whether a systemic music intervention focused on nonverbal communication (NVC) and emotion regulation would change the dynamics of dyads' relational conflict. Results: Higher parents' childhood betrayal trauma and adolescent-reported conflict scores were correlated with predictable NVC sequences whilst dyads were emotionally dysregulated, and parents' reactivity was correlated with dyads' inconsistent NVC during NCI. Post-intervention dyads were more emotionally regulated, consistent and predictable during NCI, reported lower levels of conflict and showed increased parent emotional responsiveness and reduced reactivity. Discussion: Findings indicate that where parents have experienced childhood maltreatment, conflictual parent-adolescent dyads may benefit from intervention focusing on skills that promote emotionally regulated, predictable and consistent NVC during conflict interactions. We investigated the correlations and agreement between cognitive assessments made using a computerised (CogState™, six domains) and a standard pen-and-paper battery (five domains) in PWH and lifestyle-similar HIV-negative individuals. Demographically adjusted domain and global T-scores were obtained and used to define cognitive impairment according to the multivariate normative comparison (MNC) criteria. Correlations between T-scores and the agreement between the classifications of cognitive impairment obtained from the two batteries were assessed using the Spearman's rank correlation and Cohen's κ, respectively. The correlation between global T-scores from the two batteries was 0.52 (95% CI 0.44–0.60) in PWH and 0.45 (0.29–0.59) in controls (p = 0.38 for their difference). Correlations were generally stronger between domains within the same battery than between those from different batteries. The agreement between the two batteries in classifying individuals as cognitively impaired or not impaired was fair in PWH (κ = 0.24) and poor in HIV-negative individuals (κ = −0.02). The moderate correlation between overall cognitive function and the modest agreement between binary classifications of cognitive impairment obtained from two different batteries indicate the two batteries may assess slightly different components of cognition. In this paper, reliability comparison indices are developed for log-normally distributed populations. In this regard, three indices are proposed for reliability comparison of products respectively in earlier, later, and entire stages of their lifetime. These indices are based on the confidence interval of difference between quantiles of two independent lognormal distributions. Therefore, we apply a generalized confidence interval (GCIN), and a method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER) to construct confidence intervals for difference between quantiles. The coverage probability and average length of the proposed approaches are compared through Monte Carlo simulations. In the past few years, medicine has upgraded its therapeutic techniques and practices, with the use of various modern methods that are due to advancement in technology and sciences. It is recognized that the physical health of the patients is significantly associated to their mental state, their motivation and engagement in overcoming the illness. This paper presents experimental comparison between virtual reality (VR) technology and conventional mode of therapy for physical rehabilitation among patients of neurological deficits. The objective was to explore the effectiveness of VR during physical interactions with different game-like virtual environment and potentially leading to increased mental health (i.e., lower depression, anxiety and stress), self-esteem, social support and intrinsic motivation (task-based competence, choice and interest). The study sample consisted of thirty-four subjects with Cerebral palsy (CP), Traumatic brain injury (TBI), Spinal cord injury, Stroke and Parkinson's disease; divided into two experimental groups virtual reality exercise group (n = 17), and conventional therapy group (n = 17); who have upper- or lower-limb impairment. The outcome measures revealed significant differences across pretest and post-test conditions of both the experimental groups. Findings emerged from the study showed noticeable effectiveness of virtual-reality based rehabilitation in TBI, stroke and CP patients. Relationships between study variables and demographic variables (age and gender) were also presented. This study opens the way for future researchers, psychologists, physiotherapist and other practitioners to do more extensive work in the domain of virtual reality with different sample, constructs and approaches. It has become increasing important to introduce new state-to-art technologies in domain of rehabilitation. People are reluctant to use all the traditional modes of treatment. As these conventional ways of treatment are least motivating and interesting to indulge the patients without force and burden. It is evident in the present study that addition of virtual reality-based exercise increases the self-motivated balance during functional task in contrast to conventional and task-dependent training participants. In this paper, we consider the empirical likelihood inferences for a class of varying coefficient ARCH-M models, which is an extended version of parametric ARCH-M models. By constructing a weighted auxiliary random vector, we propose a weighted empirical likelihood method for estimating the functional-coefficients. Under some regularity conditions, the constructed empirical log-likelihood ratio is shown to be asymptotically χ 2 , and then the pointwise confidence interval for functional-coefficient is constructed. Some simulation studies are carried out to compare finite sample performances of the proposed empirical likelihood estimation method with some existing estimation methods under various model settings. Purpose:The construct validity, test–retest reliability, and measurement error of the Arm Function in Multiple Sclerosis Questionnaire (AMSQ) were examined. Additionally, the influence of administration-method on reliability and measurement error was investigated. Method:112 Dutch adult MS-patients from an academic- and a residential care-facility participated. Questionnaires were administered on paper, online or as interview, and patients performed several performance tests. Construct validity was assessed by testing pre-defined hypotheses. Reliability was assessed using Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs), Standard Error of Measurements (SEMs) and Smallest Detectable Changes (SDCs). Results:For construct validity (N = 105) 9 of 13 hypotheses were confirmed (69%). As expected, the AMSQ showed moderate to strong relationships with the instruments measuring similar constructs. The test–retest reliability coefficient was 0.96 (95% Confidence Interval 0.94–0.97); SEM was 6.3 (6.3% of scale range); SDC was 17.5 (on a sale from 0 to 100). Different administration-methods showed good reliability (ICC 0.88–0.94) and small standard errors (SEM 5.6–7.2). Conclusion:The AMSQ shows satisfying results for validity and excellent reliability; allowing for proper use in research. Due to a large SDC value, caution is needed when using the AMSQ in individual patient care. Cox proportional hazards (PH) model evaluates the effects of interested covariates under PH assumption without specified the baseline hazard. In clinical trial applications, however, the explicitly estimated hazard or cumulative survival function for each treatment group helps to assess and interpret the meaning of treatment difference. In this paper, we propose to use a flexible mixture model under the PH constraint to fit the underline survival functions. Simulations are conducted to evaluate its performance and show that the proposed mixture PH model is very similar to the Cox PH model in terms of estimating the hazard ratio, bias, confidence interval coverage, type-I error and testing power. Application to several real clinical trial examples demonstrates that the results from this approach are almost identical to the results from Cox PH model. The relationship between victimization and offending is complex. Purpose: This paper simultaneously examines the trajectory of individual, family and neighborhood factors related to victimization and offending. Applying general strain theory, this study posits that victimized youth with little parental monitoring, have a lower sense of self-control and diminish feelings of guilt. In turn, the study hypothesizes that youth with low guilt is more likely to offend if they previously offended. Methods: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was conducted using Wave 1 and Wave 2 data from 625 young males from the Buffalo Longitudinal Study of Young Men (BLSYM). Results: Direct victimization is associated with guilt through a mediated relationship involving past offending. Furthermore, past offending and subsequent offending are mediated by guilt, independent of the weak effect of psychological distress. Discussion: Examining the relationship between victimization, psychological distress, and guilt in predicting trajectories from victimization to offending warrants further attention. In this paper we introduce a new type-II progressive censoring scheme for two samples. It is observed that the proposed censoring scheme is analytically more tractable than the existing joint progressive type-II censoring scheme proposed by Rasouli and Balakrishnan. The maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters are obtained and their exact distributions are derived. Based on the exact distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators exact confidence intervals are also constructed. For comparison purposes we have used bootstrap confidence intervals also. Two-tailed asymptotic inferences for the difference d = p2 − p1 with independent proportions have been widely studied in the literature. Nevertheless, the case of one tail has received less attention, despite its great practical importance (superiority studies and noninferiority studies). This paper assesses 97 methods to make these inferences (test and confidence intervals [CIs]), although it also alludes to many others. The conclusions obtained are (1) the optimal method in general (and particularly for errors α = 1% and 5%) is based on arcsine transformation, with the maximum likelihood estimator restricted to the null hypothesis and increasing the successes and failures by 3/8; (2) the optimal method for α = 10% is a modification of the classic model of Peskun; (3) a more simple and acceptable option for large sample sizes and values of d not near to ±1 is the classic method of Peskun; and (4) in the particular case of the superiority and inferiority tests, the optimal method is the classic Wald method (with continuity correction) when the successes and failures are increased by one. We additionally select the optimal methods to make compatible the conclusions of the homogeneity test and the CI for d, both for one tail and for two (methods which are related to arcsine transformation and the Wald method). In risk assessment, it is often desired to make inferences on the risk at certain low doses or on the dose(s) at which a specific benchmark risk (BMR) is attained. At times, dose levels or BMRs are of interest, and some form of multiplicity adjustment is necessary to ensure a valid simultaneous inference. Bonferroni correction is often employed in practice for such purposes. Though relative simple to implement, the Bonferroni strategy can suffer from extreme conservatism (Nitcheva et al., 2005; Al-Saidy et al., 2003). Recently, Kerns (2017) proposed the use of simultaneous hyperbolic and three-segment bands to perform multiple inferences in risk assessment under Abbott-adjusted log-logistic model with the dose level constrained to a given interval. In this paper, we present and compare methods for deriving multiplicity-adjusted upper limits on extra risk and lower bounds on the benchmark dose under Abbott-adjusted log-logistic model. This paper reports new evidence on students’ evaluation of a first-year induction experience programme and examines the relationship between gender and perceptions. The programme was provided to 610 business studies students at the University of Granada (Spain). The programme includes individual and group sessions providing psychosocial and instrumental support. Gender differences were investigated using nonparametric techniques. Structural equation models were used to test relationships between variables of overall satisfaction with the programme and its activities and the moderating effects of gender. The results obtained show that gender significantly influences enrolment and satisfaction with the programme and with the individual sessions. Satisfaction with group and individual activities is directly related to overall satisfaction with the programme. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a standardized, psychoeducational programme developed to empower the public to approach, support and refer individuals in distress by improving course participants' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to mental ill-health. The present paper aims to synthesize published evaluations of the MHFA programme in a meta-analysis to estimate its effects and potential as a public mental health awareness-increasing strategy. Fifteen relevant papers were identified through a systematic literature search. Standardized effect sizes were calculated for three different outcome measures: change in knowledge, attitudes, and helping behaviours. The results of the meta-analysis for these outcomes yielded a mean effect size of Glass's Δ = 0.56 (95% CI = 0.38 - 0.74; p < 0.001), 0.28 (95% CI = 0.22 - 0.35; p < 0.001) and 0.25 (95% CI = 0.12 - 0.38; p < 0.001), respectively. Results were homogenous, and moderator analyses suggested no systematic bias or differences in results related to study design (with or without control group) or 'publication quality' (journal impact factor). The results demonstrate that MHFA increases participants' knowledge regarding mental health, decreases their negative attitudes, and increases supportive behaviours toward individuals with mental health problems. Purpose:To analyse the effect of a six-month home-based phase III cardiac rehabilitation (CR) specific exercise program, performed in a virtual reality (Kinect) or conventional (booklet) environment, on executive function, quality of life and depression, anxiety and stress of subjects with coronary artery disease. Methods:A randomized controlled trial was conducted with subjects, who had completed phase II, randomly assigned to intervention group 1 (IG1), whose program encompassed the use of Kinect (n = 11); or intervention group 2 (IG2), a paper booklet (n = 11); or a control group (CG), only subjected to the usual care (n = 11). The three groups received education on cardiovascular risk factors. The assessed parameters, at baseline (M0), 3 (M1) and 6 months (M2), were executive function, control and integration in the implementation of an adequate behaviour in relation to a certain objective, specifically the ability to switch information (Trail Making Test), working memory (Verbal Digit Span test), and selective attention and conflict resolution ability (Stroop test), quality of life (MacNew questionnaire) and depression, anxiety and stress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale 21). Descriptive and inferential statistical measures were used, significance level was set at .05. Results:The IG1 revealed significant improvements, in the selective attention and conflict resolution ability, in comparison with the CG in the variable difference M0 − M2 (p = .021) and in comparison with the IG2 in the variable difference M1 − M2 and M0 − M2 (p = .001 andp = .002, respectively). No significant differences were found in the quality of life, and depression, anxiety and stress. Conclusions:The virtual reality format had improved selective attention and conflict resolution ability, revealing the potential of CR, specifically with virtual reality exercise, on executive function.Implications for RehabilitationIn cardiac rehabilitation, especially in phase III, it is important to develop and to present alternative strategies, as virtual reality using the Kinect in a home context.Taking into account the relationship between the improvement of the executive function with physical exercise, it is relevant to access the impact of a cardiac rehabilitation program on the executive function.Enhancing the value of the phase III of cardiac rehabilitation. Many patients with chronic fatigue syndrome(CFS) and/or fibromyalgia(FM) have little understanding of their condition, leading to maladaptive pain cognitions and coping strategies. These should be tackled during therapy, for instance by pain neurophysiology education (PNE). Although positive effects of PNE are well-established, it remains unclear why some patients benefit more than others. This paper aims at exploring characteristics of patients responding poor to PNE to further improve its effectiveness. Data from two RCT's were pooled to search for baseline predictors. Subjects (n = 39) suffering from CFS/FM, as defined by the American College of Rheumatology, underwent PNE treatment. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS); Pain Coping Inventory (PCI); and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) were defined as outcome measures. There was a significant negative relationship between baseline TSK and the change in both PCS total score (r = −0.584; p < 0.001) and PCS rumination (r = −0.346; p < 0.05). There was a significant negative relationship between the change in PCS total score and baseline PCI worrying (r = −0.795; p < 0.001) and retreating (r = −0.356; p < 0.05). FM/CFS patients who tend to worry allot about their pain and with high levels of kinesiophobia are likely to experience less reductions in catastrophizing following PNE. Purpose: Media-based rehabilitation provides a powerful opportunity to examine vocational behaviors in the disability sector. However, this research is preliminary at best. This paper reports pilot data. Method: Eighteen adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) accessed an email-delivered, resource-based package, Work and MS. Pre- and post-access vocational self-efficacy and identity (Job-Procurement Self Efficacy Scale, My Vocational Situation Scale- primary outcomes), life orientation and depressed mood (Life Orientation Test – revised and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 – secondary outcomes) were assessed. Pre- and post-change scores were examined with Wilcoxon signed ranks tests and Hedges g effect sizes with associated 95% confidence intervals. Reliable change analyses were additionally calculated to determine the clinical significance of individual change scores. Results: Significant and positive effects were reported for vocational self-efficacy, identity, and optimism. Reliable change scores in one or more of these key outcomes were reported by 30% of the sample. Satisfaction with the content and delivery of the email-based intervention was also noted. Conclusions: Preliminary evidence suggests that Work and MS can help to promote vocational goals, interests and strengths among job seekers with a disability by providing a set of tools, information and linkages relating to vocational pursuits and career development. Replication with a randomized control design is indicated. Research indicates a high unemployment rate among working-age adults with MS. A combination of disease-specific, psychological, programmatic and societal variables contribute to employment instability in this group. This pilot study demonstrates that an e-mail-based resource package, Work and MS, provides an innovative and feasible option for promoting consumer engagement with vocational services and, potentially, improving vocational outcomes. Objectives: This systematic review aimed to critically appraise the literature on the efficacy and effectiveness of psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Method: A systematic search of electronic databases was carried out. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using a quality assessment tool and comparisons were made with a review of the quality of research on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for people with IDD. Results: The search yielded 13 papers which provided evidence for the effectiveness but not efficacy of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy; but none were found for psychoanalysis. The quality of the research was generally poor compared to the current research on the effectiveness of CBT. Conclusions: Positive outcomes have been indicated for psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy with people with IDD. Context:There is a growing body of research investigating assessor judgments in complex performance environments such as OSCE examinations. Post hoc analysis can be employed to identify some elements of “unwanted” assessor variance. However, the impact of individual, apparently “extreme” assessors on OSCE quality, assessment outcomes and pass/fail decisions has not been previously explored. This paper uses a range of “case studies” as examples to illustrate the impact that “extreme” examiners can have in OSCEs, and gives pragmatic suggestions to successfully alleviating problems. Method and results:We used real OSCE assessment data from a number of examinations where at station level, a single examiner assesses student performance using a global grade and a key features checklist. Three exemplar case studies where initial post hoc analysis has indicated problematic individual assessor behavior are considered and discussed in detail, highlighting both the impact of individual examiner behavior and station design on subsequent judgments. Conclusions:In complex assessment environments, institutions have a duty to maximize the defensibility, quality and validity of the assessment process. A key element of this involves critical analysis, through a range of approaches, of assessor judgments. Aims: In India, opioid substitution therapy (OST) has been scaled-up in the recent years for HIV prevention among injecting drug users. This study aimed to assess the change in knowledge and attitude of the OST staff who underwent a five-day training programme on OST.Methods: Using a “pre-test post-test” design, routine data collected from 267 staff who underwent the OST training was analysed. The staff composition was: doctors (n = 42, 15.7%), nurses (n = 49, 18.4%), counsellors (n = 45, 16.9%) and other programme staff (n = 131, 49.1%). A 20-item, pen and paper questionnaire was administered right before the beginning of and immediately after the completion of the training. The questions were categorised into one of the five domains to assess whether changes in scores are confined to certain domains. Overall scores and scores in different domains were compared using paired-sample t-tests. The score difference in different cadres was compared using univariate general linear model with post-hoc comparisons.Findings: The difference between the total mean pre-test scores (9.24) (out of maximum possible score of 20) and post-test score (13.8) was significant. Comparison between various domains showed significant differences across all cadres. Doctors recorded significantly higher scores compared to other cadres.Conclusion: It is feasible to train different cadres of service providers together on OST in five days. Objectives: Loneliness and social isolation are two important health outcomes among older adults. Current assessment of these outcomes relies on self-report which is susceptible to bias. This paper reports on the relationship between loneliness and objective measures of isolation using a phone monitoring device. Method: Phone monitors were installed in the homes of 26 independent elderly individuals from the ORCATECH Life Laboratory cohort (age 86 ± 4.5, 88% female) and used to monitor the daily phone usage for an average of 174 days. Loneliness was assessed using the 20-item University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness scale. A mixed effects negative binomial regression was used to model the relationship between loneliness and social isolation, as assessed using the total number of calls, controlling for cognitive function, pain, age, gender, and weekday. A secondary analysis examined the differential effect of loneliness on incoming and outgoing calls. Results: The average UCLA Loneliness score was 35.3 ± 7.6, and the median daily number of calls was 4. Loneliness was negatively associated with telephone use (IRR = 0.99, p < 0.05). Daily phone use was also associated with gender (IRR = 2.03, p < 0.001) and cognitive status (IRR = 1.51, p < 0.001). The secondary analysis revealed that loneliness was significantly related to incoming (IRR = 0.98, p < 0.01) but not outgoing calls. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the close relationship between loneliness and social isolation, showing that phone behaviour is associated with emotional state and cognitive function. We focus on the nonparametric regression of a scalar response on a functional explanatory variable. As an alternative to the well-known Nadaraya-Watson estimator for regression function in this framework, the locally modelled regression estimator performs very well [cf. In this paper, the asymptotic properties of locally modelled regression estimator for functional data are considered. The mean-squared convergence as well as asymptotic normality for the estimator are established. We also adapt the empirical likelihood method to construct the point-wise confidence intervals for the regression function and derive the Wilk's phenomenon for the empirical likelihood inference. This paper discusses inferential issues related to estimation of offspring mean and variance in a second order branching process, when both the offspring distributions are assumed to have identical mean and variance. Estimating equation approach is used to find the estimator of the offspring mean and the fact that a second order branching process model can be modeled as an autoregressive process is utilized to obtain the estimator of the offspring variance. Both the estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. The second order branching process model is applied to H1N1 data for Pune, India, and Mexico and is found to be a suitable model. This paper reports on Kganya Motsha Adolescent Centre, an adolescent program specifically established to provide voluntary counseling and testing as well as management of HIV-positive young people in Soweto, South Africa. A retrospective cross-sectional analysis, using clinic records of young people accessing services from 2008 to 2012, was conducted. Of the 11,522 who tested, 7689 (67%) were females. The total number of HIV infections was 410, with an HIV prevalence of 3.6% (95% CI 3.2–3.9%). More females (332, 4% vs. 72, 2%;p< 0.0001) were HIV-infected than males. Of those testing HIV positive, 109 (26.5%) had a median CD4 cell count of 491 (IQR 345–686) cells/mm3. Only 12/410 individuals (2.9%) were eligible for antiretroviral treatment and 10 (2.4%) of those successfully received treatment. The program observed that young people testing HIV positive would not return for follow up blood specimens or confirmatory results. Future programs should consider innovative ways of retaining adolescents in care to reduce potential HIV transmissions that could lead to deteriorating health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accelerated life testing is widely used in product life testing experiments since it provides significant reduction in time and cost of testing. In this paper, assuming that the lifetime of items under use condition follow the two-parameter Pareto distribution of the second kind, partially accelerated life tests based on progressively Type-II censored samples are considered. The likelihood equations of the model parameters and the acceleration factor are reduced to a single nonlinear equation to be solved numerically to obtain the maximum-likelihood estimates (MLEs). Based on normal approximation to the asymptotic distribution of MLEs, the approximate confidence intervals (ACIs) for the parameters are derived. Two bootstrap CIs are also proposed. The classical Bayes estimates cannot be obtained in explicit form, so we propose to apply Markov chain Monte Carlo method to tackle this problem, which allows us to construct the credible interval of the involved parameters. Analysis of a simulated data set has also been presented for illustrative purposes. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to investigate the precision of the Bayes estimates with MLEs and to compare the performance of different corresponding CIs considered. Recently, exact inference under hybrid censoring scheme has attracted extensive attention in the field of reliability analysis. However, most of the authors neglect the possibility of competing risks model. This paper mainly discusses the exact likelihood inference for the analysis of generalized type-I hybrid censoring data with exponential competing failure model. Based on the maximum likelihood estimates for unknown parameters, we establish the exact conditional distribution of parameters by conditional moment generating function, and then obtain moment properties as well as exact confidence intervals (CIs) for parameters. Furthermore, approximate CIs are constructed by asymptotic distribution and bootstrap method as well. We also compare their performances with exact method through the use of Monte Carlo simulations. The challenges associated with facilitating an organizational environment that promotes work engagement and is supportive of employee psychological well-being are well documented. This study focused on the longitudinal relationships between work engagement and three supportive job resources: supervisor support, colleague support and individual perceptions of the wider resource of work culture support. The sample comprised 1196 employees of an Australian state police service, both police officers and civilian staff, who completed self-report surveys across three waves of data collection. Work culture support predicted higher supervisor support, colleague support and work engagement over time lags of 12 and 18 months. Furthermore, work engagement was a significant predictor of work culture support over the two time lags. Significant indirect relationships were also observed. With the large volume of work-related factors potentially influencing work engagement, the results of this research assist in clarifying the specific supportive job resources that impact upon work engagement over time. Aim: To compare fine motor performance of 3-year-old children with visual impairment with peers having normal vision, to provide reference scores for 3-year-old children with visual impairment on the ManuVis, and to assess inter-rater reliability.Method: 26 children with visual impairment (mean age: 3 years 7 months (SD 3 months); 17 boys) and 28 children with normal vision (mean age: 3 years 7 months (SD 4 months); 14 boys) participated in the study. The ManuVis age band for 3-year-old children comprised two one-handed tasks, two two-handed tasks, and a pre-writing task.Results: Children with visual impairment needed more time on all tasks (p< .01) and performed the pre-writing task less accurately than children with normal vision (p< .001). Children aged 42–47 months performed significantly faster on two tasks and had better total scores than children aged 36–41 months (p< .05). Inter-rater reliability was excellent (Intra-class Correlation Coefficient = 0.96–0.99).Conclusions: The ManuVis age band for 3-year-old children is appropriate to assess fine motor skills, and is sensitive to differences between children with visual impairment and normal vision and between half-year age groups. The article reports on controversy created by magnitude-based inference (MBI) when reporting the results of studies. Statistician Kristin Sainani was concerned about the consequences of using MBI that she wrote a formal analysis of the MBI method. Declaring that many interventions work when they do not is said to be unacceptable to editors and practitioners. Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise decided not to accept for publication papers that use MBI.
