The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has shown promising results for people suffering from mental fatigue after an acquired brain injury. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility of a MBSR program performed as an online self-study course for this group of people. Sixty participants who had suffered an acquired brain injury with lasting mental fatigue were randomized to an online MBSR course or to a waitlist control group. They answered self-report questionnaires before start and after the course. Sixteen completed the MBSR program. With the repeated ANOVA no significant difference between groups was found, although there was a significant change in time (the repetition factor). The post-hoc paired t-test indicated a significant reduction and a large-to-median effect size in mental fatigue (p = 0.003, d = 0.896), depression (p = 0.038, d = 0.569) and anxiety (p = 0.030, d = 0.598) for the MBSR group. No significant changes were found for the control group. An online self-study MBSR program for people suffering from mental fatigue after an acquired brain injury can be a feasible option for those suffering from less severe mental fatigue and emotional symptoms, while others may require a program adapted to their needs. To test the hypotheses that, after the delivery of manual wheelchairs following the WHO 8-step service-delivery process, wheelchair-related health and quality of life, wheelchair skills, wheelchair use, and poverty probability would improve; and that the number of wheelchair repairs required, adverse events, caregiver burden, and the level of assistance provided would decrease. This was a longitudinal, prospective within-subject study including 247 manual wheelchair users, and 119 caregivers, in El Salvador who received a wheelchair following the WHO 8-step process as well as maintenance reminders. Outcome measurements were performed via structured questionnaires and dataloggers at the initial assessment, at wheelchair delivery, and at 3- and 6-month follow-up. Significant improvements in wheelchair-related health indicators (all with p < 0.004) and quality of life (p = 0.001), and a significant reduction in national and "extreme" poverty probability (p = 0.004 and p = 0.012) were observed by six months. Wheelchair use significantly decreased (p = 0.011 and p = 0.035) and wheelchair skills increased (p = 0.009). Caregiver burden did not change (p = 0.226) but the number of activities of daily living (ADLs) that required no assistance significantly increased (p = 0.001) by three months and those who required complete assistance decreased (p = 0.001). No changes were observed in wheelchair repairs (p = 0.967) and breakdowns over time with new wheelchairs. Wheelchair service delivery using the WHO 8-step process on manual wheelchair users in El Salvador has positive effects on health and quality of life, wheelchair skills, caregiver assistance levels, and poverty. Further research is needed to determine the relative contributions of the intervention components. Exercise is an important occupation for wheelchair users. Limited access to adapted aerobic exercise equipment in the community and lack of knowledge on how to exercise are barriers to exercise participation among wheelchair users. To address these barriers, the adapted rower (aROW) and adapted skier (aSKI) exercise machines and educational materials were created. 1) To compare wheelchair users' perspectives of the effectiveness and usability of the aROW and aSKI. 2) To explore perceptions of educational materials to support use of the machines. A sequential, mixed-methods study design was used. Six wheelchair users trialled the machines, and completed an interview and two usability questionnaires. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic and conventional content analysis. Usability scores of both machines were compared using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Data show high usability of the aROW and aSKI. More set up challenges were reported for the aROW than the aSKI. Participants perceived both machines provided effective cardiovascular workouts, and each met their exercise goals differently. Participants preferred the instructional videos over instructional sheets and provided suggestions for improving both. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test showed no statistically significant difference in usability between the aROW and aSKI. Implementing the aROW and aSKI in the community may address some equity issues that wheelchair users face by providing more aerobic exercise options. Results will inform educational material revisions to support use of the machines. Trainees may be interested in careers in aging but unfamiliar with career options, leading to a shortage in the geriatric workforce. In response to needs identified at a national geropsychology training conference, a multisite faculty group developed a six-session webinar series about careers in geropsychology, detailing career options in six unique settings. Each webinar session featured a moderated discussion with a panel of four professionals currently employed in the career of interest. The webinar was advertised to clinical and counseling psychology trainees with a potential interest in age-related careers, with evaluation of the series primarily including trainees from graduate programs, clinical internships, and postdoctoral fellowships. Participants rated their attitudes and beliefs about each career option at pre- and post-discussion. On average, each webinar session was attended by 48 individuals (SD = 12, range = 33–60). At baseline, attendees reported significantly more interest in careers in clinical practice compared to other careers, and interest in university settings increased from pre- to post-discussion. Across all six sessions, participants reported increased understanding of training experiences that would be helpful in pursuing that specific career. The aim of this pilot study was to test an effort to provide spiritual care (SC) to oncology outpatients in the Ascension healthcare system. Medical providers referred patients who would benefit from spiritual and emotional support. Twenty-seven cancer outpatients from 5 states were enrolled in the project. Based on the chaplain assessment, 45% of the patients had moderate or severe spiritual concerns. On average patients had 4 sessions with a chaplain (range 2–9). Of the 136 chaplain sessions, 56% were in-person in the clinic and 35% were by phone. The most common chaplain activities were active listening (87% of the sessions) and demonstrate caring and concern (55%). For the 20 patients who provided follow-up data, there were decreases in all measures of religious/spiritual distress, though statistically insignificant, and a marginally significant increase (p <.054) in well-being. Although sociocognitive impairment is linked to failure of occupational reintegration in other clinical populations, less is known on the association of sociocognitive functioning and occupational reintegration in brain tumor patients such as primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Twenty PCNSL patients with ongoing complete response to therapy for at least one year were evaluated of whom eight resumed work. The association between occupational status, empathy, alexithymia and social problem solving was analyzed. Employed and non-employed patients were significantly different in their ability to provide appropriate solutions for social situations even when accounting for neurocognition. Decreased quality of life was associated with sociocognitive impairment. Although the results must be replicated in larger, more representative populations, this exploratory analysis tentatively adds facets to the literature on occupational reintegration in brain tumor patients. Problem-drinking among university students is common and poses serious health-related risks. Therefore, identifying and addressing associated factors is important. A large cross-sectional online-survey with 12,914 university students from Berlin was conducted from November 2016 to August 2017. Relative-risk- and correlation-analysis was used to identify factors associated with problem-drinking and regular heavy-drinking. Independent t-tests compared impulsivity and personality traits, chi-square-tests compared drinking motives between risk- and non-risk-drinkers. Male gender, tobacco-smoking, illegal substance use, impulsivity and various sociodemographic and psychosocial variables were significantly related to problem/heavy-drinking. Extraversion was a risk, conscientiousness and agreeableness were protective factors. Drinking-motives did not differ significantly between risk- and non-risk-drinkers. Generally, the main drinking-motives were to feel elated, relax and social purposes. The identified markers and related problem behaviors may serve as a tool to enhance the identification of student subgroups at risk for problem/heavy-drinking, and hence improve targeted health-intervention-programs. The present study investigated whether working memory (WM) training enhances morphosyntactic processing in the second language (L2). L2 learners of Spanish in the treatment group completed WM updating pre/post tasks and a moving window task containing sentences with gender agreement. Moreover, the treatment group trained with two WM tasks for five consecutive days, they completed a posttest and a delayed posttest two months after. The results show that the treatment group presented transfer to untrained WM tasks at both posttests, while the control group did not. While neither group showed sensitivity to gender disagreement at pretest, the treatment group was sensitive to violations after training, and this improvement in morphosyntactic processing was sustained at the delayed posttest. The control group, however, remained insensitive at posttest. Taken together, the findings suggest that WM is a malleable system and WM training may be used as a cognitive tool to facilitate L2 morphosyntax. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The restrictions imposed to control the COVID-19 pandemic had significant negative effects on the mental health of the general population, and particularly in nurses as frontline healthcare workers. The main goal of the present study was to analyze the direct and indirect effects, via social connectedness, of centrality of the COVID-19 outbreak on depressive symptoms. Furthermore, it is explored whether this association varied by group (nurses versus general population). The global sample included 326 individuals from the community and 316 nurses, who were administered self-reported questionnaires. Results revealed that event centrality of COVID-19 outbreak was linked to depressive symptoms, both directly and through the deterioration of social connectedness; moreover, this indirect effect was significant for both subsamples. Interventions aimed at preventing the deterioration of social connectedness may facilitate the decrease of depressive symptoms in the aftermath of the pandemic, particularly for nurses. An estimation error is the difference between motor imagery and actual motor time. Previous studies have reported that overestimation (motor imagery time < actual motor time) is related to physical functions in healthy individuals. However, this finding is unclear among individuals diagnosed with a stroke. We investigated whether overestimation is related to physical function in individuals diagnosed with a stroke. This study included 71 individuals diagnosed with a stroke (mean age, 67.2 ± 13.4 years; mean time since stroke, 68.4 ± 44.7 days). Imagined timed up and go test (iTUGT) was performed to assess the estimation error. First, the iTUGT was performed; subsequently, the TUGT was performed. The estimation error was calculated by subtracting the TUGT from the iTUGT, with two standard deviations (2 SDs) being calculated. Furthermore, patients were classified into appropriate estimation (AE, within ±2 SD) and overestimation (OE, over −2 SD) groups. Both groups were tested using the estimation error, iTUGT, TUGT, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Brunnstrom Recovery Stage (BRS). Subsequently, a correlation analysis was performed. The OE group had a significantly higher estimation error than the AE group (OE: −7.08 ± 6.87 s, AE: −0.29 ± 1.53 s, P <.001). Moreover, the OE group had significantly lower TUGT and BBS than the AE group. The estimation error was correlated with the TUGT, BBS, and lower-limb BRS (ρ = −0.454, 0.431, 0.291, respectively; P <.05). Previous studies reported inconsistent outcomes on elastic taping for three potential reasons: 1) poor control of placebo effect; 2) no consensus regarding the optimal tape tension; and 3) lack of investigation on muscle endurance, as the proposed tape recoiling force may not promote peak force generation but exert a consistently low force and improve submaximal contraction. This study compared the effects of elastic tape and its tension on muscle activity and endurance in people with extremely positive and negative personal belief on elastic tape. Using a validated instrument, we identified 20 participants with extremely positive personal belief on elastic tape (+ belief), and 20 with extremely negative personal belief (- belief). They performed wrist isometric endurance tests under three taping conditions (i.e. no tape, 50%, and 100% tension). We measured isometric wrist extensor muscle endurance, electromyography muscle activity, and self-perceived performance for each condition. The differences between the two groups in isometric muscle endurance (p =.85) and muscle activity (p =.53) were not statistically significant, regardless of tape conditions. However, participants with + belief reported better perceived performance than those with – belief (p <.001, partial eta squared = 0.70). Specifically, 100% tape tension yielded stronger self-perceived performance than 50% tension (Cohen's d = 0.91) and no tape (Cohen's d = 1.86). On the other hand, participants with – belief perceived similar performance across tape tensions (p =.55). Elastic tape does not modulate muscle activity and enhance muscle endurance. Following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), people frequently have difficulty understanding nonliteral language, including irony and indirect requests. Despite the handicap that these disorders can represent in daily life, they are rarely treated clinically, and remediation studies are scarce. The present study thus aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an explicit metapragmatic therapy targeting nonliteral language comprehension and taking into account cognitive processes likely to underlie this comprehension (i.e., contextual processing, theory of mind, and executive functions). This study was registered on the ClinicalTrials.gov system (ID: NCT04708561) before participant recruitment. Two adults with severe TBI took part in the study. An ABA design with multiple baselines was used to assess the evolution of treated and non-treated written literal and nonliteral story comprehension, as well as ecological tasks and tasks assessing the cognitive processes of interest (theory of mind and executive functions). An interview was also conducted at the end of treatment to assess participant satisfaction. Therapy resulted in significant improvement in treated items, with one-month maintenance of gains and generalisation to untreated items in both participants. The generalisation to a working memory task was also observed in one participant. Finally, participant satisfaction with the treatment was high. Our study demonstrated for the first time the potential of a therapy targeting irony and indirect request comprehension in TBI individuals. Conducted from January to December 2022, it covered 46 countries, collecting data on suicide rates, income, Human Development Index (HDI), poverty rate, life expectancy, literacy rate, and political system. Suicide rates in Muslim-majority countries could be predicted based on HDI, poverty rates, life expectancy, and literacy rates. Frequency of suicide rates varied across continents, with the highest rates in Africa. Culturally sensitive suicide prevention programs are crucial for Muslim-majority countries. Gynecological examination has an very place among to maintain women's health. Negative attitudes and anxiety about gynecological examination may affect coming to the examination. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of online training and counseling on women's attitudes and anxiety toward the gynecological examination. We randomized 100 women participating in the study into experimental and control groups. We concluded that online training and counseling had a positive effect on the attitudes of women in the experimental group toward gynecological examination. Also we determined that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety toward gynecological examinations. In this study, we determined that online training and counseling positively improved women's attitudes toward gynecological examination. We also found that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety about gynecological examinations. In the literature, most of the studies on gynecological examination have a descriptive design. This study is important since it contributes to scientific knowledge in determining the attitudes and anxiety levels of women that may affect their status of undergoing gynecological examination. In this study, the researchers aimed to investigate the effects of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) applied with telerehabilitation on urinary symptoms, quality of life, and subjective perception of improvement and satisfaction in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients having lower urinary tract symptoms. Patients were randomly divided into PFMT (n:21) and control (n:21) groups. The PFMT group received PFMT via telerehabilitation for 8 weeks and lifestyle advice, while the control group received only lifestyle advice. Although lifestyle advice alone was not effective, PFMT applied with telerehabilitation was an effective method in the management of lower urinary tract symptoms in MS patients. Our study aimed at detecting a potential cumulative effect of subsequent concussions on the neural activation patterns of young rugby athletes with or without concussion history. Event-related brain potential (ERP) data from 24 rugby players, 22-year-old on average, were retrospectively examined. All underwent a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT2) during preseason and an on-site ERP task (P300) following a recent concussion event (<48 hours). Sixteen players suffered at least one concussion in the previous 3 years and eight were without self-reported past concussion. While no differences were reported between groups regarding symptom appraisal on the SCAT2 assessment, ERP revealed significantly decreased P3b amplitude and a trend for increased P3b latency in players who experienced prior concussions. Our data thus support the cumulative effect of concussions on neuroelectric events in young rugby players, highlighting the importance of managing player's concussion load to reduce the risk of long-term injuries. The objective was to evaluate the effects of acai supplementation (AS) on markers of muscle damage. Twelve men participated in the 21-day study. All performed the damage protocol (DP) in two moments, separated by 7 days. The DP consisted of 10 sets of 10 CMJs, with a recovery of 1 min between sets. The AS was performed for 7 days with 40 g/day of dehydrated acai (GA) or placebo (GP). Blood parameters (CK, LDH and Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity – TEAC) were evaluated at 0 h and 24 h. Ultrasound images (VL, RF and GM), DOMS in lower limbs and isometric peak torque (IPT) of knee extensors and flexors were evaluated at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after DP. A time–treatment interaction was observed for TEAC (p = 0.01), in which the GA presented increases of 11% after 24 h. Similarly, time–treatment interaction was observed for knee flexors IPT (p = 0.02), where GA showed superior recovery after 24 h (GA = 108 ± 23 vs. GP = 92 ± 24 N∙m) and 72 h (GA = 113 ± 31 vs. GP = 98 ± 26 N∙m). No significance was observed in the fatigue index for knee extensors (p = 0.75) and flexors (p = 0.89), indicating similar fatigue in both situations. This study examined whether firefighters who were satisfied with their romantic relationships experienced lower severities of commonly reported mental health symptoms compared to firefighters who were dissatisfied with their relationships. The sample included 200 firefighters (97% male; Mage = 41.4, SD = 9.3) currently married or living with a romantic partner who completed self-report measures via online survey. An established cutoff score of 13.5 (Couples Satisfaction Index-4) was used to define groups. The current study investigated whether hope and its two components (agency and pathways) weakened the relations between perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation among older adults living in rural Nepal. A community sample of 300 people aged from 60 to 90 years (Mage = 67.07, SDage = 6.23) who resided in the rural mid-hills of Nepal completed standardized measures. Hope and agency moderated the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation and pathways moderated the relationship between thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation. Hope, and particularly agency, may play a protective role in reducing suicidal ideation among older Nepali adults living in rural areas who experience perceived burdensomeness. In contrast, pathways may be an additional risk factor for older adults experiencing unmet belongingness needs. Research is required to understand fearlessness about death and suicidality among older Nepali adults. Increasing hope and particularly agency may be associated with a reduction in suicidal ideation among older Nepali adults who experience feelings of being a burden. However, increasing pathways may be associated with an increase in suicidal ideation among those who experience unmet belongingness needs. The experience of waiting for breast biopsy results can cause clinically significant levels of psychological distress. This study is a replication and extension of previous work examining the well-being of patients at a breast biopsy appointment. Expanding on a previous study, we aim to identify predictors of well-being following the appointment (i.e. waiting for results). In this longitudinal study, female patients (N = 197) were surveyed at their breast biopsy appointments and then completed daily surveys assessing distress and coping during the week-long wait for results. Surveys asked about patient characteristics, subjective health, cancer history, support availability, outcome expectations, and distress. Consistent with the previous study, health history and demographic factors were largely unassociated with distress, this time while waiting for biopsy results. Latina ethnicity emerged one of the few predictors of coping, pointing to opportunities for differential clinical interventions that take cultural factors into account. Finally, anxiety was highest at the beginning and end of the wait for biopsy results, suggesting that interventions may be most effective following a breast biopsy and the days prior to learning one's result. This study aimed to investigate the additional effects of perioperative immunonutrition (IMN) compared with preoperative immunonutrition (IMN) on anthropometric, nutritional, and biochemical parameters, hospital stay and postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer. Oral supplementation enriched with arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and dietary nucleotides was given to 25 patients before and after the operation (Group 2); 25 patients received the same formula before surgery and standard isocaloric nutrition following the operation (Group 1). Postoperative body weight, body mass index (BMI), and middle upper arm circumference (MUAC) of Group 1 decreased more than Group 2 during follow-up (p < 0.05). The biochemical parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were higher, and albumin was lower than the baseline in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between CRP and Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS) 2002 scores, and prealbumin and NRS 2002 scores had a positive correlation (p = 0.007, r = 0.384; p = 0.012, r = 0.352). There was no difference in hospital stay and postoperative complications between the groups (p > 0.05). Perioperative immunonutrition, compared to preoperative immunonutrition, can be used as a positive and effective approach in improving some anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Urban green spaces benefit physical, mental health, and reduses the risk of cardiovascular disease. A study in Kaunas, Lithuania collected health data from 100 patients with symptomatic heart failure (HF) during 2006–2009. Residential greenness was measured by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). We assessed the impact of greenness on health indicators and on changes in health markers after 6 months. Higher greenness levels based on the NDVI 1-km radius were related to higher mean values of heart rate (HR) and ejection fraction and lower left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic diameter index (LV EDDI), LV end-systolic volume (ESV), left atrium size (LAS), and right atrium size (RAS) at baseline. After 6 months, a decrease in DBP and HR and an improvement in spiroergometric parameters were associated with exposure to high levels of greenness. The long-term rehabilitation group experienced significant changes in spiroergometric indicators. Adolescents who identify as asexual (i.e., do not experience sexual attraction) remain understudied despite a recent increase in studies carried out among asexual adults. The present study provides data on the frequency of asexual identities among adolescents with attention to diversity across the asexuality spectrum, including a focus on demisexual adolescents. We utilized a national sample of 17,112 LGBQA + adolescents aged 13–17—of which 773 (4.5%) identified as asexual and 105 (0.6%) identified as demisexual. We compared those identifying as asexual and those identifying as demisexual on outness and social–emotional adjustment. In addition, we tested differences between asexual adolescents and allosexual sexual minority youth (SMY) on their sexual identity outness and social–emotional adjustment, and whether the associations differed by sexual identity. We found that asexual adolescents were out to significantly fewer people and experienced fewer depressive symptoms than demisexual adolescents. Asexual adolescents reported lower outness, greater depressive symptoms, and lower self-esteem compared to allosexual SMY. Greater outness was associated with higher self-esteem across asexual and allosexual SMY. These findings suggest increasing identification as asexual among youth compared to previous generations and point to greater social–emotional adjustment challenges for asexual compared with allosexual SMY. To evaluate the balance in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and knee osteoarthrosis (KOA), measured by postural stability computerized evaluation (PSCE), and to evaluate the effect of post-TKA patients' characteristics in their performance on PSCE. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in two sets of patients: (A) patients with KOA and primary TKA surgery scheduled and (B) patients who underwent primary TKA >9 months. Sociodemographic, radiographic, clinical and PSCE parameters (using the Biodex Balance System) were assessed. Post-TKA patients placed more load on the replaced knee than the contralateral osteoarthritic knee (p = 0.027). They had less imbalance on the balance tests performed with the eyes open, on stable (p = 0.032), and unstable platforms (p = 0.022). These patients also showed better postural stability in monopodalic stance, both standing on the TKA (p = 0.010) and contralateral knee (p = 0.017). Age, weight, pain on the operated knee, extension deficit on the operated knee, and Berg Balance Scale scores on post-TKA patients were significantly associated with their performance on PSCE tests. PSCE can be useful to quantify the balance of post-TKA and KOA patients. Total knee arthroplasty is the definitive treatment for knee osteoarthrosis and it has several benefits, but its effect on balance is still unknown. Postural stability computerized evaluation is used to evaluate balance on vestibular diseases and it has been recently studied on musculoskeletal conditions. Manual co-speech gestures can facilitate language comprehension, especially in adverse listening conditions. However, we do not know whether gestures influence simultaneous interpreters' language comprehension in adverse listening conditions, and if so, whether this influence is modulated by interpreting experience, or by active simultaneous interpreting (SI). We exposed 24 interpreters and 24 bilinguals without interpreting experience to utterances with semantically related gestures, semantically unrelated gestures, or without gestures while engaging in comprehension (interpreters and bilinguals) or in SI (interpreters only). Tasks were administered in clear and noisy speech. Accuracy and reaction time were measured, and participants' gaze was tracked. During comprehension, semantically related gestures facilitated both groups' processing in noise. Facilitation was not modulated by interpreting experience. However, when interpreting noisy speech, interpreters did not benefit from gestures. Empathy is thought to be reduced in videoconference (VC) compared to face-to-face (F2F) therapy. To empirically test this possibility, therapist and client ratings of empathy and its correlates were examined in VC and F2F sessions. Forty-eight students in clinical training programs were randomly assigned to the role of 'therapist' or 'client', forming 24 dyads. Each dyad completed a simulated clinical session in F2F and in VC and reported on empathy and telepresence. Both therapist and client ratings of empathy were significantly lower in VC compared to F2F. Therapist empathy correlated with telepresence, particularly its physical subcomponent, and therapeutic presence, but these associations were not found for clients. The relationship between empathy and telepresence was investigated further in a real-world study. Twelve clients met with clinical psychology trainees over VC and reported on empathy and telepresence. The associations between therapist empathy, total telepresence, and the physical component of telepresence were replicated. Again, client ratings of empathy and telepresence did not correlate. These results provide the first empirical evidence that empathy is reduced in VC teletherapy compared to F2F and highlight the connection between the degree of empathy felt by therapists and their sense of telepresence during teletherapy. Social norms are common in persuasive messaging. For norms trending in a positive direction, it may be beneficial to emphasize change (i.e. dynamic norm) rather than the status quo (i.e. static norm). To test this proposition, we examined college students' responses to social norm messages encouraging moderate alcohol use. Undergraduates (N = 842) were randomly assigned to view a dynamic norm ("More college students drinking in moderation"), a static descriptive norm ("Most college students drink in moderation"), or a no message control. Four mechanisms were examined as potential mediators, three of which have been examined in previous work (preconformity, perceived importance, self-efficacy) and one of which was novel (psychological reactance). Results revealed that exposure to either social norm message (dynamic or static descriptive) was associated with more favorable attitude relative to a no message control. Attitude did not differ between the dynamic norm and static descriptive norm conditions. Only psychological reactance mediated the relationship between message condition (dynamic vs. static descriptive norm) and favorable attitude. Implications and future directions are discussed. In 2006, Marks and Fraley published research suggesting that people remembered more information that was consistent rather than inconsistent with a sexual double standard. Despite the impact of that paper on the field, there were several caveats of that research, including a small sample. The present research, therefore, aims to replicate and extend Marks and Fraley's research. Presently, 400 participants read a vignette about a sexually active man or woman for two minutes. This vignette contained an equal amount of positive and negative information. Participants then had 5 minutes to recall the information from the vignette. In the extension portion of the research, some participants experienced an experimentally varied delay, which was used to create forgetting curves in an effort to parse apart whether any differences in recall were due to differences in the encoding process, retrieval process, or both. Recall results replicated the pattern of results from Marks and Fraley (2006), in that participants remembered more negative information about the woman than the man, and more negative than positive information about the woman. Analyses of forgetting curves were inconclusive, as the predictors explained less than 0.5% of the variance in recalled information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Older adults (OA) after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have a high risk of developing persistent post-injury cognitive impairments. Lower pre-morbid cognitive reserve (CR) is increasingly investigated as a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction in OA. However, how CR protects against effects of mTBI at the brain level remains largely understudied. We examined 22 OA who sustained mTBI (mean 67.69 years, SD 5.11) in the sub-acute phase and 15 age- and CR-matched healthy OA (mean 68 years, SD 5.55) performing a three-level visual N-back task using electroencephalography. We calculated inverse efficiency scores of performance from accuracy and reaction times. Event-related potentials served as neurocognitive correlates of attentional (P2) and working memory (P3) processing. Overall, mTBI OA performed worse than healthy OA (p = 0.031). Lower CR generally decreased performance (p < 0.001). Furthermore, with increasing task difficulty, task performance was more affected by CR (p = 0.004). At the brain level, P2 amplitude was lower in mTBI OA than in healthy OA (p = 0.05). There was no clear effect of CR on P2 or P3 measures. As mTBI OA with lower CR performed worse on a working-memory task, lower CR may be a risk factor for worse recovery after mTBI in this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Without standard guidelines, there is a critical need to examine anal cancer screening uptake in the South which has the highest HIV incidence in the U.S. We identified factors associated with screening among men living with HIV (MLHIV) at a large academic HIV outpatient clinic in Alabama. Relationships between sociodemographic, clinical, sexual risk characteristics and screening were examined using T-tests, Fisher's exact, Chi-square, and logistic regression analyses. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) were computed to estimate the odds of screening. Among 1,114 men, 52% had received annual anal cytology (pap) screening. Men who were screened were more likely to have multiple sexual partners compared to men who were not screened (22.8% vs. 14.8%, p = 0.002). Among men with one partner, the youngest were almost five times more likely to be screened compared to middle-aged men (AOR = 4.93, 95% CI: 2.34–10.39). Heterosexual men had lower odds and men who reported unprotected anal sex had higher odds of screening. Our findings suggest a racial disparity, with older black MLHIV being the least likely to be screened. In the South, MLHIV who are older, black, heterosexual, or live in high social vulnerability counties may be less likely to receive annual anal cancer screening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) might affect all aspects of life including perceived stigma, but research on perceived stigma is still in its infancy among SLE patients. The objective of this study was to assess the relationships among socioeconomic status, clinical parameters, disease activity, quality of life, depression, and the perceived stigma in Chinese patients with SLE. A total of 133 SLE patients (mean age: 39.36 ± 12.91 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. All data were collected consecutively by face-to-face questionnaires from January 2021 to January 2022. SLE patients completed questionnaires for demographic or clinical variables, the 10-cm Visual Analog Scale for pain, the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) for disease activity, the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depression, the Perceived Devaluation Discrimination (PDD) Scale for the perceived stigma, and the Short Form 12 health survey (SF-12) for quality of life. Independent sample t-test, Spearman or Pearson correlations analysis, and the multivariable linear regression model were used to analyze these data. The mean PDD scale score in the SLE patients was 2.79 ± 0.33, which were statistically significant compared with the midpoint (2.50 ± 0.38) of the scale (P < 0.05). The perceived stigma was significantly correlated with income, pain, disease activity, depression, and quality of life. The SF-12 mental composite summaries (MCS) score and depression were the important predictors of the perceived stigma by the multivariable linear regression. This study demonstrates that psychological status is significantly associated with the perceived illness stigma in Chinese SLE patients; dealing with this stigma may be important in promoting optimal coping for these patients. Based on the ERG (Existence, Relatedness and Growth) theory, a scale was developed to evaluate the professional needs of psychological counsellors in China and its related factors were explored. A total of 209 counsellors participated in the study and completed two online questionnaires. The majority of participants were female (n = 163, 78%). The average age of participants is 41.00 (SD = 8.66). The results showed that the existence needs ($\bar{x}$ x ¯ = 4.49, SD = 0.60), relatedness needs ($\bar{x}$ x ¯ = 4.20, SD = 0.65) and growth needs ($\bar{x}$ x ¯ = 4.66, SD = 0.50) of counsellors were all at a high level. Work setting, marital status and regular supervision had a significant influence on the professional needs of counsellors. Counsellors working in private practice had more existence and growth needs compared to those working in institutions. Counsellors, who were married, had more existence and relatedness needs than those who were single. Counsellors without regular supervision had more existence, relatedness and growth needs. Orthotic devices may be prescribed for the management of foot and ankle deformities caused by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). However, the actual use of these devices is variable. No studies have evaluated the impact of prescription, delivery and follow-up of orthotic devices on their use. We aimed to describe the relationship between the pathways followed by individuals with CMT and orthotic device use. Exploratory, cross-sectional, 35-item survey of orthotic device management. Individuals with CMT were recruited from CMT-France Association. Of the 940 respondents, 795 were included, mean age of 52.9 (SD 16.9) years. Rate of orthotic device use was 49.2% (391/795). The most frequent reason for non-use was a poor fit. Non-use was related to the orthotic device type, the health professionals consulted, and the severity of the CMT-related impairments. Follow-up visits (38.7%), re-evaluation of orthotic devices (25.3%) and consultations with the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physician were infrequent (28.3%). Orthotic devices are massively underused. Follow-up and re-evaluation are infrequent. Care pathways, prescription and delivery of orthotic devices must be optimized to meet the expectations of people with CMT. Device fitting, individual needs, and changes in the clinical state must be re-evaluated regularly by specialists to improve orthotic device use. Foot deformities and foot drop contribute to disability in people with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease but use of orthotic devices is poor. To improve orthotic device use, regular multidisciplinary consultations and regular re-evaluation of the device by specialists in neuro-orthopaedics are important. The device fit should be regularly re-evaluated by the prescribing doctor or the practitioner who made the device. Regular multimodal evaluation of foot deformity, including muscle strength and length, and the individual's needs and expectations is also important to improve orthotic device use. The Osteoarthritis Research Society International has recommended a core set of performance-based tests of physical function for use in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. The core set includes 30-second chair stand test (30-s CST), 4 × 10 m fast-paced walk test (40-m FPWT), and a stair climb test. This study aimed to evaluate responsiveness and minimal important changes (MICs) of these performance-based measures in knee OA patients following physiotherapy. Sixty patients with knee OA, undergoing 4-week physiotherapy performed 30-s CST, 40-m FPWT, and 4-step stair climb test (4-step SCT) at pre- and post-intervention. Patients also completed the 7-point global rating scale as an external anchor at post-intervention. Responsiveness was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics curve and correlation analysis. All three performance-based measures of physical function showed area under the curve > 0.70. Correlation analysis showed relationship of 30-s CST, 40-m FPWT, and 4-Step SCT with the external anchor fell within moderate to good range (Spearman = 0.43–0.63). Furthermore, MIC values reflecting improvement for 30-s CST, 40-m FPWT, and 4-Step SCT were 2.5, 0.21, and 3.21, respectively. Our findings demonstrated all three performance-based measures have good responsiveness to measure improvement in physical functions of knee OA patients following physiotherapy. Chronic lymphedema is a progressive and inflammatory disease caused by impaired lymphatic transport. This study evaluates the effects of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) and aquatic physiotherapy on markers of the inflammatory process and lower limb volumes in individuals with lymphedema. A randomized controlled clinical trial was carried out with three groups: patients with lymphedema submitted to CDT, patients with lymphedema submitted to aquatic physiotherapy, and control group of individuals without lymphedema. The evaluation was performed through blood count, CRP measurements, C3, C4 complement, measurement of serum levels of cytokines interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukins 4 (IL-4), 6 (IL-6), and 10 (IL-10), and the volume of a lower limb using the volume formula of a truncated cone. The study was registered with the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (RBR-4tpkszn). Our work showed a reduction in the TNF-α levels of patients in the CDT group (p =.028). Significant differences were found between the control group and the CDT group for IL-10 (p =.049) and Monocytes (p =.039). No significant reduction in limb volume was found. Our results show that CDT was able to significantly reduce the inflammatory marker TNF-α in patients with lymphedema, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect of the therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) seeks to improve students' learning with the support of technology. Although CSCL facilitates an enriching environment for cooperation, CSCL activities might be affected by asymmetrical participation. Group awareness tools have proven to enhance learners' interactions, balancing the levels of participation and increasing the learning outcomes. This study investigates the effect of a group awareness tool (GAT) on participation within synchronous CSCL activities in the context of extracurricular activities. We designed a quasi-experimental within-subject study (GAT exposure and control condition) and tested an ad hoc GAT in a web-based CSCL platform with high school students (N = 140). The measured variables included the effect of the GAT on students' participation and the quality of discussion. A complementary analysis evaluated students' perceptions of the tool. Results revealed that the implementation of a GAT encourages students to take part in CSCL discussions without explicitly hindering its quality. Even so, the balance of participation was not significantly affected. Students further reported that they found the GAT useful to regulate collaboration. The results from the study provide further knowledge of the functioning of group awareness tools in secondary education and share an insight into how students perceive them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For users to adopt information systems, they must develop trust in such systems. Even though trust theories consistently define trust as dynamic, the development of trust over time has received little empirical attention. The present study examined the development of trust in a newly introduced information system and its association with antecedents related to the individual (e.g. disposition to trust), the information system (e.g. reliability), and the context (e.g. support) at different time points. We further assessed users' reliance, performance, and well-being as outcomes of trust. Employees (N = 313) of a German public university assessed a newly introduced invoice processing system on four occasions (before system launch, after initial use, five months after launch, ten months after launch). Results from latent growth curve modelling show a non-linear increase of trust in the information system over time with changing predictors: Person factors were stronger predictors of trust in early phases, whereas system characteristics were stronger predictors later in the process. Moreover, users' trust in the information system correlated positively with reliance, performance, and well-being. Our results highlight the central role of trust for the successful adoption of information systems at work, and offer specific suggestions for their building and maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is among the most commonly used broadband inventories of psychological functioning. For the purposes of assessing trauma specifically, the most relevant aspect of the PAI is the Traumatic Stress subscale of the Anxiety-Related Disorders scale (ARD-T), which measures the degree to which a person feels wounded by something in their past. Research suggests that ARD-T is associated with exposure to a variety of different traumatic stressors. However, there is little research on the degree to which traumatic stressors that entail a component of interpersonal betrayal (i.e. betrayal trauma) are associated with higher scores on ARD-T relative to other stressors. In this study, we evaluated the relative associations between traumas with varying degrees of betrayal and scores on ARD-T in a secondary analysis of two non-clinical samples (college sample N = 494; crowdsourced sample N = 364) using a Bayesian approach to multiple regression. In both samples, traumas with both high and medium (but not low) degrees of betrayal were associated with elevated ARD-T scores. Findings suggest that ARD-T scores are associated with interpersonal trauma regardless of betrayal, which has implications for interpretation of the ARD-T scale in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate differences in tinnitus impact, hyperacusis and hearing threshold level (HTL) between patients with unilateral and bilateral tinnitus. For patients with unilateral tinnitus, to compare audiological variables for the tinnitus ear and the non-tinnitus ear. To assess whether the presence of unilateral tinnitus increases the likelihood of interaural hearing asymmetry (relative to bilateral tinnitus) that warrants referral for an MRI scan. Retrospective cross-sectional. Data regarding HTLs and responses to self-report questionnaires were collected from the records of 311 patients attending a tinnitus clinic. 38.5% had unilateral tinnitus and the ears with tinnitus had higher HTLs and greater HTL slopes than the ears without tinnitus. There was no significant difference in tinnitus impact and hyperacusis between patients with unilateral and bilateral tinnitus. 40% of patients with unilateral tinnitus and 13% of patients with bilateral tinnitus had a between-ear difference in HTL ≥15 dB at two adjacent frequencies (2AF15 asymmetry). Unilateral tinnitus increased the risk of 2AF15 asymmetry by a factor of 4.4. Unilateral tinnitus increases the risk of having interaural asymmetry in HTLs that warrants referral for an MRI scan. Smartphone ownership and engagement are at an all-time high. Excessive smartphone use may impart smartphone-specific anxiety; specifically, the fear of being unable to access or use one's smartphone, or nomophobia. Young adults, in particular, are at higher risk for nomophobia, given higher ownership of and engagement with smartphones. Notably, little research has been done in a Canadian context. Objective: To conduct an environmental scan of nomophobia prevalence in a Canadian university. Participants: Full-time and part-time university students. Methods: The Nomophobia Questionnaire and demographics were collected via mass emailer of all students at the host institution (n = 1,002). Results: Findings indicate moderate-to-high levels of nomophobia among respondents, with nearly a quarter of respondents reporting severe nomophobia. Respondents who identified as women were an undergraduate, and/or owned an Apple device reported significantly higher nomophobia. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for comparable levels of nomophobia between Canadian post-secondary students and recent global research. To compare participation patterns, environmental supports, and barriers to community activities in adolescents with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Turkey. Participants were 94 adolescents with ADHD and 109 adolescents without ADHD ages 13-17 years (mean age 14.6, S.D 1.49 years) Participation frequency, involvement rate, mothers who desired change, and environmental supports and barriers in a community setting were assessed with the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY). Adolescents with ADHD participated 20.3% less frequently in socializing with peers in the community than adolescents without ADHD. With moderate to large effect sizes, the mean involvement rate in four community activities, including neighborhood outings, community events, socializing with peers in the community, and religious activities, was significantly lower for adolescents with ADHD than for adolescents without ADHD. Adolescents with ADHD participate less frequently and are less involved in socializing with peers in the community. Almost half of all ADHD adolescents never participate in community events. As adolescents turn to online resources for health information, obstetricians and gynaecologists can play an active role in creating evidence-based resources for sexual health education. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a sexual health education website on adolescent girls' reproductive health knowledge and self-efficacy. It took the form of a prospective study among girls aged 14–18 in a rural area of the USA. Informed consent and parental consent were obtained. Participants completed a pre-test survey containing a 20 question validated Reproductive Health Knowledge Index (RHKI) and six self-efficacy questions. They then completed the website curriculum (), followed by a post-test survey containing RHKI and same self-efficacy questions. Thirty-three girls completed the study with an average age of 16.42 (SD 1.09). Ten (30.3%) reported never having received sexual health education in school. Overall mean RHKI score improved from pre-test to post-test (87.67 SD 6.35 vs 90.82 SD 7.45, p = 0.012). Change in knowledge score ranged from −16.25 to+19.17 with a mean increase of+3.14 (SD 6.77). Practitioners who work with children and young people such as educators, psychologists, and social workers, are required to understand and respond to various sexual behaviours in children and young people. However, there is a dearth of training programmes dealing with sexual development. To reduce over- and under-reporting of risk, which can have serious adverse outcomes, it is essential to educate practitioners in understanding and responding appropriately to sexual behaviours. This study evaluated Traffic Lights® professional development training programme – a one-day programme offered across Queensland, Australia, with the goal of educating practitioners and promoting safe and respectful sexual health among children and young people. Thirty postgraduate psychology students working with/interested in working with children and young people received Traffic Lights® training, and accuracy of understanding and responding to sexual behaviours presented in scenarios was assessed pre- and post-training. Participant responses were scored using criteria developed by a local sexual health organisation's research specialists. Findings revealed no significant improvement in understanding and responding to sexual behaviours in children and young people. Implications of this study include recommendations for small-scale evaluations with sexual health experts and follow-up research, which is critical given the need for evidence-based practice in this area. To evaluate the efficacy of environment-based intervention on participation outcomes and parent efficacy in autistic children. Twenty-one autistic children 6–10 years old and their parents were randomized to environment-based intervention (n = 11) or usual care (n = 10). The environment-based intervention targets individualized participation goals in leisure and community activities through changing environment and activity demands. The study outcomes were Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Goal attainment scaling (GAS), and Parent Empowerment and Efficacy Measure (PEEM). Assessments included baseline, 12 weeks (post-test), and 24 weeks (follow-up). Mixed ANOVAs were used to examine within-group and between-group effects in outcome variables. The COPM performance and satisfaction scores and GAS T-scores increased after environment-based intervention from baseline to 12 weeks and 24 weeks (p < 0.001) but did not significantly differ from usual care. The medium to large effect sizes of COPM performance and GAS T-scores favored the environment-based intervention. For the PEEM scores, no significant differences were found. Environment-based intervention may support school-age autistic children to participate in self-chosen activities over time. The intervention effects on participation goals and parent efficacy, however, were inconclusive and need further research. Environmental barriers are important attributes to participation restriction in autistic children. Interventions focusing on modifying the task and environment is viable in supporting the participation of autistic children. The environment-based intervention appears to improve the participation goals in leisure and community-based activities over time. The environment-focused strategies may include providing social support, enabling access to a sensory-friendly environment, finding inclusive programs, adapting task demands, and managing routines. The IndieTrainer system, comprised of both a mobility device and gamified training modules, was developed to aid powered wheelchair (PWC) skills acquisition in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The aims of this small-scale study are to: explore use of the IndieTrainer system to improve PWC skills in children who have CP and document parental/caregiver perceptions of, and satisfaction with, the IndieTrainer system. This small-scale study is an open-label single-arm clinical trial involving a three-week PWC training intervention consisting of two 60-minute training sessions per week. A single session retention trial will be held four weeks after the completion of the intervention period. All research activities will take place in-person in a laboratory-based setting located within a university. Twenty-five child-parent/caregiver dyads will participate in the study. Each child participant will be 3 to 21 years of age and have a diagnosis of CP or other similar condition. The Assessment of Learning Powered mobility use will be the primary outcome measure. Secondary outcome measures will include the Wheelchair Skills Checklist, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, the Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire-8, and a qualitative interview. Data analyses will involve one-way repeated measures ANOVAs followed by paired samples t-tests with Bonferroni adjustments. The IndieTrainer system allows children to explore and use power mobility in their own manual wheelchair and was designed to meet the needs of power mobility learners across the continuum of learning. It is the first PWC training system to optimize learning for early learners who do not yet understand cause and effect concepts. The IndieTrainer system is designed to meet the needs of power mobility learners across the continuum of learning. This protocol outlines a novel means of providing progressive power mobility training. Notwithstanding the documented greater endurance capacity of experienced climbers, the mechanisms explaining these training-induced adaptations remain unknown. We therefore investigate whether two non-competing strategies – muscle adaptation and alternate muscle recruitment – may explain the disparity in endurance capacity in participants with different climbing experience. We analysed high-density surface electromyograms (EMGs) from 38 Advanced and Intermediate climbers, during suspension exercises over three different depths (15, 20, 30 mm) using a half-crimp grip position. From the spatial distribution of changes in MeDian Frequency and Root Mean Square values until failure, we assessed how much and how diffusely the myoelectric manifestations of fatigue took place. Advanced climbers exhibited greater endurance, as evidenced by significantly longer failure time (p < 0.009) and lower changes in MDF values (p < 0.013) for the three grip depths. These changes were confined to a small skin region (nearly 25% of the grid size), centred at variable locations across participants. Moreover, lower MDF changes were significantly associated with longer suspension times. Collectively, our results suggest that muscle adaptation rather than load sharing between and within muscles is more likely to explain the improved endurance in experienced climbers. Stroke can affect all aspects of a person's health and functioning. Therefore, it is important occupational therapists, have a comprehensive understanding of various levels of function and the factors affecting function. The ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) and the selections of ICF categories or Core Sets relevant for people with a specific health condition, offer a model for intervention. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ICF-CS-based occupational therapy interventions on the function and satisfaction of individuals with chronic stroke. This study was designed as a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group clinical trial. Twenty-five patients with stroke were randomly assigned to the control group (which received traditional occupational therapy) or the treatment group (Stroke ICF-CS based occupational therapy). Patients were evaluated before and after the intervention (two months, three sessions per week, 45 minutes each session), as well as two weeks after the end of the intervention, using Fugl-Meyer and COPM (Canadian Occupational Performance Measure) tools. The independent T-test, Chi-square, and ANOVA with repeated measures were used to analyze the data. The results showed that the interaction effect of time and group was not significant in none of the Fugl-Meyer test sections (p > 0. 05), but it was significant in the performance and satisfaction of COPM (p < 0.05). This study examined the effects of an 8-week horizontal speed deceleration training (HSDT) programme in combination with regular handball-specific training as compared with handball-specific training only in measures of physical fitness in male youth handball players. Thirty-nine players were randomly assigned to either an HSDT group (n = 18; 15.55 ± 0.24 years) or an active-control group (CG; n = 21; 14.59 ± 0.23 years). The results showed significant and large between-group differences at post-test in countermovement jump, change-of-direction speed, and repeated sprint ability (RSA) (all p < 0.01; d = 2.04 and 1.37, 1.39, 1.53, and 1.53 for the CMJ, 505 CoD, RSAbest, RSAaverage, and RSAtotal performances, respectively). The post-hoc-analysis demonstrated significant and large improvements in all measures of physical fitness in the HSDT group (∆2.49% to 16,25%; d = 1.01 to 1,70; all p < 0,01). The CG, however, failed to reach any significant difference in all measures of physical fitness ((∆0.31% to 1.98%; d = 0.15 to 0.22; p = 0.379; p > 0.05). To summarise, an 8-week in-season HSDT programme alongside regular handball-specific training yielded positive effects on various performance measures including jumping ability, CoD speed, and RSA, when compared to handball-specific training alone. Across most developmental periods, males tend to drink at a higher frequency and at a higher intensity than females. In identifying the mechanism responsible for these differences, biological factors have been a prevalent focus; however, gender expression is also highlighted. The purpose of this paper is to decipher how differences in binge drinking are attributed to sex differences and gendered traits. Using data from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (ADD Health) (n = 8,882), we conducted a multiple group moderation analysis to examine how differences in biological sex and gender roles in emerging adulthood predicted binge drinking. We found that binge drinking in emerging adulthood was most strongly predicted by high levels of masculinity and low levels of femininity in emerging adulthood. As masculinity decreased, alcohol use decreased. Femininity significantly moderated masculinity's association with binge drinking, primarily when masculinity was high, and this did not vary across sex after controlling for gender roles. Our findings expand sex and gender research surrounding alcohol use. For both males and females, the higher the masculinity the more frequent alcohol use, an effect of which was buffered by higher levels of femininity. Despite the high prevalence of sleep disturbances in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the relationship between physical activity in daily life (PADL) and sleep in this population remains unclear Investigate the impact of sleep on different domains of PADL in IPF and characterize their PADL profile Sixty-seven participants (thirty-three with IPF and thirty-four healthy subjects [control group]) were included. The subjects underwent assessments of pulmonary function, exercise capacity, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, PADL, sleep, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life. PADL and sleep measures were assessed using an activity monitor (Actigraph®, wGT3x-BT). Associations between sleep and PADL were done using correlation and regression models. In the IPF, sleep duration at night associated significantly with step counts, sedentary, light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (−0.82 ≤ R ≤ 0.43; p <.05 for all). Lung function and sleep partially explained PADL variables (0.19 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.65, p <.05 for all). Compared to controls, the IPF subjects presented lower step counts, less time spent in MVPA, standing position, and more time spent in lying position (p <.05, for all) Sleep duration is associated with PADL in IPF.
