Young people in Colombia present high rates of mental health problems, to which the country’s history of armed internal conflict contributes in complex ways. Mental health services in Colombia are fragmented, inadequate, and difficult to access for many. Young people’s help)seeking is often hindered by mental health stigma and/or poor experiences with services. This paper presents a thematic analysis of qualitative data from a mixed-methods study aimed at developing and testing a mental health intervention for Colombian youths. We draw upon theoretical lenses from scholarly work on stigma and Sen’s ‘capabilities approach’ to inform our analysis of interviews and group discussions with staff and young people involved in the state-funded human capital building programme ‘Jovenes en Acción’ (JeA). By illustrating how study participants talked about stigma, vulnerability, mental health services organisation, and the challenges of discussing mental health topics in a learning environment, we illuminate aspects of mental health support and anti-stigma interventions that might need enhancing. In particular, we suggest that more emphasis on ‘community competencies’ as complementary to and interrelated with individual competencies would strengthen young people’s individual and collective resources for mental wellbeing while being in line with the sociocritical principles of existing human capital-enhancing programmes. Purpose: Those travelling overseas for work or leisure including male expatriates, longer-term and frequent travellers (ELoFTs) may be at heightened risk for a range of health and wellbeing issues. Social support may mediate this risk. However, from a public health perspective, little is written about how ELoFTs access health information and support and the role of their social networks in facilitating health and wellbeing outcomes. This research was part of a study examining social network processes of Australian male ELoFTs travelling, living, or working in Southeast Asia (SEA). Methods: Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory were the conceptual framework and methodology supporting semi-structured, in-depth interviews (n = 25) conducted in Australia and Thailand with Australian male ELoFTs to SEA, aged 18 years or older. Results: Findings highlight supports that assist ELoFT transition and adjustment to country of destination or manage their transnational experience. Influential places, people, and points in the migration journey mediated engagement with social support. Conclusions: ELoFT social networks and the support provided within them may provide a mechanism for intervention across a range of public health issues. Health inequalities arise already during the first thousand days of a child's life. Participatory action research (PAR) is a promising approach, addressing adverse contexts that impact health inequalities. This article describes the experience of mothers involved in a PAR process to develop a health promotion action that supports both children's and mothers' health. It also describes the experiences of mothers who attended the developed action and trainers who facilitated it. The PAR process resulted in the development of a sustained action called Mama's World Exercise Club aimed at promoting the health of mothers and their children. Results showed that the PAR process empowered the mothers and gave them a sense of pride at playing a useful role in their community. The developed action was highly valued by other mothers in the neighbourhood and widely implemented. These positive results can be ascribed to the strong collaboration between the researchers and the mothers, and the willingness of local stakeholders to support the action. Future studies should investigate if the results of this study sustain over a longer period of time and improve health outcomes of children and mothers in the long run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the concept of social connectedness for adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), generally and during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, to help inform contemporary CF healthcare. Social connectedness is an essential component of belonging and refers to an individual's sense of closeness with the social world. Unique disease factors make exploration of social connectedness pertinent, added to by COVID-19, with the CF population potentially facing increased risk for severe illness. Seventeen adults with CF in Western Australia undertook interviews, with findings categorized as overarching themes. In a general sense, participants described social connectedness challenges caused by CF, despite which they reported meaningful connections that benefits their mental and physical health. Within a COVID-19 specific context, participants demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, highlighted the importance of empathy in relation to the pandemic, and described how social support is both an outcome and enhancer of social connectedness. This study contributes to limited social connectedness literature within CF and chronic illness in general, highlighting the importance of social connectedness awareness raising, assessments and interventions in CF healthcare inside and outside the COVID-19 pandemic. To assess fibromyalgia patients' experiences and appraisals about a multidisciplinary intervention programme, in Catalonia's primary care, regarding its format and contents, benefits, and health impact in the short and long term. Qualitative interpretative research design through hermeneutic phenomenology perspective. Two focus groups discussions were conducted in February and July 2020. The purposive heterogeneous sample included 19 fibromyalgia patients who attended a multicomponent programme. In addition, thematic analysis on the verbatims was performed. Findings were organized into five main domains with an explanatory theme each. Overall, the informants valued the programme as a positive experience due to its holistic approach, health benefits, suffering relief, group effect, and fibromyalgia legitimacy promotion. Detected improvable aspects focused on extending the timeframe, including family members as beneficiaries, deepening the thematic contents, and getting regular access to this healthcare service. Furthermore, the intervention was considered feasible to be incorporated into usual clinical care. the programme fulfilled users' expectations about results and procedure and showed promise as a treatment strategy to reinforce the usual practice. Our findings suggest a broad perspective on fibromyalgia patients' suffering, which urges us to adjust the intervention programme to their real health needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: In order for health professionals to encourage pregnant women with a low socioeconomic status (SES) to move towards empowerment for a healthy dietary intake, crucial steps are to understand the perspectives of pregnant women of food and eating and to identify opportunities for empowerment. This study aimed to examine the perspectives of pregnant women on food and eating and to identify the opportunities for empowerment towards a healthy dietary intake. Methods: This was a qualitative participatory study. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with low SES pregnant women in the Netherlands and analysed using an inductive approach. Results: Five perspectives on food and eating emerged: 1) health-promoting foods and products, 2) challenges in healthy eating, 3) risky products, 4) strategies for healthy eating, and 5) motivational aspects. Opportunities for empowerment were: searching balanced and personalized information, developing strategies to implement healthy diets, navigating the social environment, and dealing with different motivations. Conclusion: Pregnant women hold diverse perspectives regarding food and eating, signalling the need to adjust dietary support from health-care professionals. Professionals in antenatal care could optimize their interactions by engaging in pregnant women's empowerment processes to make healthy modifications to their dietary intake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background:Physical activity plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain, but chronic pain may implicate a poor rehabilitation outcome. The concept of physical activity on prescription (PAP) is a therapeutic option for various diseases, but there is a lack of knowledge about how patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain experience receiving the prescription. Objectives:The objective of this study was to describe the experiences of and thoughts about receiving a prescription for physical activity of people with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Design:Interviews analysed using qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Setting:Three primary healthcare centres in a mixed rural and suburban area in the vicinity of a large city in western Sweden. Subjects:Fifteen individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Results:Four categories were identified with the overarching theme “Physical activity in chronic pain requires extra support”. There were several barriers for increasing activity level and these patients suffered from the additional burden of pain. The categories were: “Important to identify needs”, “Barriers and facilitators for physical activity”, “Perceptions of PAP vary” and “Effects found of receiving PAP”. Conclusions:Despite the many positive experiences of receiving PAP, patients described confusion about the role and execution of PAP. Chronic pain is an additional barrier for increasing activity level, and it is crucial to consider these patients’ circumstances. This study suggests that patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain have a greater need for information and extra support to overcome existing barriers, before or when physical activity is prescribed.Key PointsPhysical activity is important for prevention and treatment of chronic pain and has earlier been shown to be increased by “physical activity on prescription”.Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain required the prescriber to listen and take the patients’ circumstances, context, symptoms and current activity level into account to a greater extent.Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain experienced more obstacles to increase their physical activity and, therefore, had a greater need for individually tailored information and support when prescribed physical activity.Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain found it difficult to distinguish between physical activity on prescription and physiotherapy and perceived that also the physicians could not tell the difference.
