Purpose: Dyslipidemia is a major health issue worldwide. There is growing interest in understanding the potential role of kimchi consumption on serum lipid profiles. However, there are limited epidemiological studies available on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between kimchi intake and serum lipid profiles. Methods: We conducted an epidemiological study on participants (aged 40–69 years old) selected from the Health Examinees (HEXA) cohort study (n = 61,761). Four types of kimchi, including Baechu kimchi (cabbage kimchi), Kkakdugi (radish kimchi), Nabak kimchi/Dongchimi (a type of water kimchi made with fermented vegetables), and other kimchi, were assessed by a 106-food item semi-quantitative validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Each kimchi intake is the average value calculated from the FFQ of the baseline and follow-up surveys. Fasting blood data were obtained at baseline and follow-up visits. Linear regression was used to examine the relationship between the intake of kimchi and the change in serum lipid profiles. Results: The mean years between the baseline survey and a follow-up survey was 4.97 years. In this study, compared to the lowest category (< 1 serving/day), Baechu kimchi intake (2− < 3 servings/day) had more negative correlations with the change in values of total cholesterol (β: −1.600, 95% confidence interval [CI, −2.744, −0.456]), triglycerides (β: −3.372, 95% CI [−5.414, −1.330]), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (β: −1.155, 95% CI [−2.214, −0.095]) in women. In men, Baechu kimchi intake (2− < 3 servings/day) had a more positive correlation associated with the changes in values of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (β: 0.049, 95% CI [0.031, 0.907]) compared to the lowest intake category (< 1 serving/day). Conclusions: Among Korean adults, consumption of kimchi, particularly Baechu kimchi, was found to be associated with improvements in serum lipid profiles. Summary: It has been hypothesized that lipid profiles are associated with bone mineral density (BMD), but previous results have been controversial. In this study, serum triglycerides showed a significant inverse association with BMD, and the relationship is thought to correlate with vitamin D status among older adults. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lipid profiles and bone mineral density (BMD) in older adults using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: We enrolled men older than 50 years and postmenopausal women who participated in the KNHANES 2008–2011. Subjects with liver cirrhosis, thyroid disease, or renal dysfunction and those receiving treatment for hyperlipidemia or osteoporosis were excluded. Results: A total of 4323 subjects (2286 men and 2037 women) was analyzed. The prevalence of osteoporosis was 8.7% in men older than 50 years and 38.4% in postmenopausal women. Osteopenia and osteoporosis groups were generally older and tended to have a lower body mass index compared to the normal group (p for trend < 0.001). The correlation between each lipid profile and BMD was analyzed in the linear model adjusted for age and body mass index. Total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol showed a negative correlation with BMD in the total population, but there was no significant correlation when analyzed separately for men and women. Triglycerides had a negative association with whole-body BMD in both men and women (p < 0.05). The adjusted odds ratio of logarithmic triglyceride level for osteoporosis was 2.50 (95% confidence interval 1.13–5.51) in women older than 65 years. This nationwide population-based cohort study evaluated the association between lipid profiles and the future risk of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using authorized clinical data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service. A total of 6,129,616 subjects over 50 years of age who participated in the Korean National Health Screening Program in 2013 or 2014 were included. Data on risk factors, including age, sex, comorbidities, behavioral factors, and baseline lipid profiles, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels were collected. Patients were followed-up patients until December 2018, and incident cases of exudative AMD were identified using registered diagnostic codes. During an average follow-up period of 4.91 years, 18,803 patients were newly diagnosed with exudative AMD. Compared to the lowest HDL cholesterol quartile group, the highest HDL cholesterol quartile group had a greater risk of future exudative AMD development with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.13 (1.08–1.18) in the fully adjusted model. The highest TG quartile group had a lower risk of exudative AMD than the lowest TG quartile group, with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.84 (0.81–0.88). An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped and pink-colored bacterial strain, designated BRD72T, was isolated from a crater lake (Baengnokdam) at the top of Mt. Hallasan in the Republic of Korea. Cells were catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate was a member of the genus Hymenobacter and most closely related to Hymenobacter marinus KJ035T (96.2% similarity). The isolate was found to produce carotenoid pigment, but not flexirubin-type pigment. The predominant fatty acids of strain BRD72T were summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c, 21.6%), iso-C15:0 (17.9%), anteiso-C15:0 (13.3%) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17:1 I and/or anteiso-C17:1 B, 11.3%). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified amino lipid, and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7), and the main polyamine was homospermidine. The DNA G+C content was 59.8 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, physiological, and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain BRD72T represents a novel species, for which the name Hymenobacter baengnokdamensis sp. nov. is proposed. Purpose: This study was to see the effects of a balanced Korean diet (BKD) on metabolic risk factors in overweight or obese Korean adults, comparing with those of a typical American diet (TAD) and a diet recommended by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2010DGA). Methods: The study was designed as a randomized crossover controlled trial, in which 61 overweight or obese volunteers were divided into six groups and each consumed the BKD, 2010DGA, and TAD in a random order for 4 weeks separated by 2-week washout intervals. Anthropometric indices, blood pressure, blood lipid content, fasting blood glucose, and blood insulin level were measured at the beginning and end of each diet period. Results: A total of 54 participants completed the trial. The BKD caused more significant reductions of body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), body fat percent (p < 0.001), blood total cholesterol (p < 0.001), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (p = 0.007) compared with the 2010DGA or TAD (all p values for differences between diets < 0.05). All three diets significantly lowered blood triglyceride levels (p < 0.05). The BKD decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (p = 0.001) and increased fasting blood glucose (p = 0.018), whereas TAD and 2010DGA increased HDL cholesterol and did not affect blood glucose levels. Furthermore, the BKD significantly decreased the proportion of individuals with elevated total cholesterol (p < 0.001) and LDL cholesterol (p < 0.01), whereas the 2010DGA significantly reduced the number of obese individuals (p < 0.05), and the TAD decreased the number of participants with elevated triglyceride levels (p < 0.05), but increased that of those with elevated LDL cholesterol (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The Korean diet based on dietary guidelines improved metabolic risk factors such as BMI, body fat percent, and blood lipid profiles in overweight or obese Korean adults. These results provide evidence to recommend the Korean diet for preventing various metabolic diseases. A Gram-negative, aerobic, motile by gliding, rod-shaped bacterium, strain 17J68-2T, was isolated from a soil sample taken from Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The isolate displayed high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the members of the genus Lysobacter in the family Lysobacteraceae, with Lysobacter humi FJY8T (98.4% similarity), Lysobacter xinjiangensis RCML-52T (98.3%), and Lysobacter mobilis 9NM-14T (98.1%) as closest phylogenetic neighbors. Growth of strain 17J68-2T occurred at 15–42 °C, pH 7–8, and in the presence of 0–1.0% NaCl. Draft genome was 2.94 Mb in size with G+C content of 70.5 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Ubiquinone Q-8 was the predominant respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids were C16:0 iso (39.4%), summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c) (6.6%), C11:0 iso 3–OH (6.4%), C15:0 iso (6.4%), and C16:1 iso H (6.2%). The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain 17J68-2T and L. humi, L. xinjiangensis, and L. mobilis were 39.9, 39.4, and 25.3%, respectively. From these results, it is concluded that the novel isolate possesses sufficient characteristics to differentiate it from the most closely affiliated Lysobacter species, and strain 17J68-2T represents a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the name Lysobacter segetis sp. nov. Purpose: Hormonal changes after menopause can cause dyslipidemia by the cessation of endogenous estrogen. We analyzed the lipid profile of the Korean healthy menopausal women according to the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).Methods: Data obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2012 were analyzed. The study included 428 healthy postmenopausal women with HRT (HRT group) and 1804 healthy postmenopausal women without HRT (NHRT group).Results: After adjustment for confounding factors, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were lower in the HRT group than in the NHRT group (TC: 200.1 ± 2.0 vs. 204.9 ± 1.1, P = 0.04; LDL: 120.3 ± 1.0 vs. 124.5 ± 1.0 mg/ml, P = 0.033). Triglycerides (TG) were lower in the HRT group than in the NHRT group [106.8, (95 % CI 99.8-114.3) vs. 115.1 (95 % CI 111.8-118.5), P = 0.04]. Non-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was lower in the HRT group than in the NHRT group (145.4 ± 1.9 vs. 151.2 ± 1.0 mg/ml, P = 0.008). Patients with HRT were lower in the LDL cholesterol level (OR 0.601, 95 % CI 0.397-0.917, P = 0.018), the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein ratio (OR 0.787, 95 % CI 0.617-0.997, P = 0.016), and the non-HDL level (OR 0.68, 95 % CI 0.509-0.907, P = 0.009).Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the use of HRT may have a positive effect on dyslipidemia in postmenopausal women. Summary: This study investigated the association between lipid profiles and insulin resistance and bone mineral content (BMC) in Korean adolescents and found that BMC was inversely associated with triglyceride (TG) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). This association did not differ according to obesity status in either boys or girls. Introduction: To prevent future osteoporosis, it is important to identify factors that affect bone health in adolescents as well as adults. This study aimed to examine the association between lipid profiles and insulin resistance and BMC in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from 706 boys and 621 girls, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2011, were analyzed. Lipid profiles were measured, and HOMA-IR was calculated to assess insulin resistance. BMC was measured for the total femur, femur neck, and lumbar spine by using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results: TG level and HOMA-IR were negatively correlated with BMC at all three sites in boys. In girls, TG level showed a negative correlation with BMC at the femur neck and lumbar spine, and HOMA-IR was negatively associated with BMC at the femur neck only. These inverse associations did not differ according to obesity status in either sex. Adjusted means of BMC at the three sites in boys tended to decrease in the higher tertile groups of TG and HOMA-IR, and the adjusted means of BMC for the total femur in girls tended to decrease in the higher tertile groups of TG and HOMA-IR. Conclusions: BMC was inversely associated with TG and HOMA-IR in Korean adolescents, and this association was more pronounced in boys.
