Network traffic classification is a fundamental and intricate component of network management in the modern, high-tech era of 5G architectural design, planning of resources, and other areas. Investigation of traffic classification is a key responsibility of traffic engineering in SDN. SDN is a network programmability technology used in 5G networks that divides the control plane from the data plane. It also points the way for autonomous and dynamic network control. SDN needs data from the classification system's flow statistics to apply the appropriate network flow policies. To control the volume of heterogeneous network traffic data in 5G network service, the network administrator must implement a carefully supervised traffic investigation system. This study uses machine learning techniques to examine alternative ways of handling heterogeneous network traffic. The suggested approach is Ensemble Learning for Automated Network Traffic Categorization. i.e., CatBoosting for Automated network traffic classification for multiclass (Cat-ANTC) predicts traffic categorization and offers a higher prediction accuracy than individual models and a more regularized model formalization to decrease over-fitting and boost efficiency. The Cat-ANTC is evaluated using benchmark network traffic datasets that are openly accessible and contrasted with current classifiers and optimization methods. It is clear that when compared to the currently used ensemble techniques, the suggested ensemble methodology produces promising outcomes. Due to recent advancements in connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), freeway traffic control (FTC) has become a trendy area of research. Combining CAVs and control measures has opened more efficient traffic flow possibilities. However, while there is extensive research on how traffic control and CAVs can enhance traffic flow performance, their safety benefits should be evaluated more comprehensively. It is challenging to distinguish their contributions to traffic flow safety. Studies on the safety of CAVs in traffic flow indicate that traffic flow safety improves with higher market penetration rates (MPR) of CAVs. However, this finding only sometimes aligns with the traffic flow performance effects of CAVs on freeways. This paper introduces a framework for assessing the safety effects of FTC strategies in mixed traffic scenarios involving human-driven vehicles and CAVs. The proposed framework is tested through a microsimulation-based case study in Istanbul, Turkey. The results show that, despite varying MPRs, the safety effects of CAVs and FTC methods do not consistently reduce the number of conflicts in the traffic flow context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurately obtaining accurate information about the future traffic flow of all roads in the transportation network is essential for traffic management and control applications. In order to address the challenges of acquiring dynamic global spatial correlations between transportation links and modeling time dependencies in multi-step prediction, we propose a spatial linear transformer and temporal convolution network (SLTTCN). The model is using spatial linear transformers to aggregate the spatial information of the traffic flow, and bidirectional temporal convolution network to capture the temporal dependency of the traffic flow. The spatial linear transformer effectively reduces the complexity of data calculation and storage while capturing spatial dependence, and the time convolutional network with bidirectional and gate fusion mechanisms avoids the problems of gradient vanishing and high computational cost caused by long time intervals during model training. We conducted extensive experiments using two publicly available large-scale traffic data sets and compared SLTTCN with other baselines. Numerical results show that SLTTCN achieves the best predictive performance in various error measurements. Recently, the Non-Standalone Architecture option 3 standard is proposed to facilitate the deployment of 5th Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) cellular systems. According to this standard, 5G NR base stations can utilize the 4th Generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) core network to provide network services. Additionally, the network can be configured to support LTE-NR dual connectivity enhancement, which means that a User Equipment (UE) can connect to a 4G LTE and a 5G NR base station at the same time. In such a dual connectivity network, the 4G LTE base station dispatches downlink traffic flows between the 4G LTE and 5G NR base stations for UEs. As investigated in previous works, traffic flow controls between 4G LTE and 5G NR base stations will affect network performance. In this work, we propose a downlink flow control algorithm based on the concept of Genetic Algorithm, with the objectives of maximizing throughput and fairness of throughput. We verify our designs through simulation programs and experiments on real platforms. The results indicate that the proposed solution effectively achieves the designed objectives. The research of traffic congestion control has been developed rapidly in recent years. Researching the bifurcation characteristics of traffic flow and designing control schemes for unstable bifurcation points can provide some new methods for relieving the traffic congestion. In this paper, we study the bifurcation characteristics and nonlinear control of traffic flow based on the continuum model considering the new energy vehicles effect. First, a macroscopic traffic flow model considering the number of new energy vehicles and their range is proposed. Then, we transform it into a traffic flow stability model suitable for branching analysis using the traveling wave transformation. Therefore, we can transform the traffic flow problem into the stability analysis problem of systems and reflect unstable traffic characteristics such as congestion. Based on the stability model, the existence conditions of the Hopf bifurcation are proved and some bifurcation points of the traffic system are found. Second, we study the congestion and stability abrupt change behaviors near the equilibrium point and branching point to seek for the formation mechanism of traffic congestion. Finally, for the unstable bifurcation point, the control scheme is designed by Chebyshev polynomial approximation, stochastic feedback control, and other methods to delay or disappear the unstable bifurcation point and alleviate traffic congestion. Traffic congestion not only has a great impact on people's travel, but also increases energy consumption and air pollution. The control analysis of the macroscopic traffic flow model considering the vehicle braking effect is particularly important, reflecting the impact on the actual traffic flow density wave, so as to better solve the actual traffic problems. In this paper, based on a speed difference optimization speed model, the micro–macro-variables are transformed into a high-order continuous traffic flow model. Then, a random function considering the physical correlation of random components is added to the high-order continuous traffic flow model to establish a random traffic flow model that can reflect the uncertain behavior of traffic flow acceleration or deceleration. Based on this stochastic traffic model, the existence of Hopf bifurcation and bifurcation control of the traffic flow system model considering stochastic characteristics are derived by using Hopf bifurcation theorem. By Chebyshev polynomial approximation method, the stochastic problem of the system is transformed into the bifurcation control problem of its equivalent deterministic system. A feedback controller is designed to delay the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation and control the amplitude of the limit cycle. Without changing the equilibrium point of the system, the complete elimination of Hopf bifurcation can be achieved by controlling the amplitude of the limit cycle. That is, the feedback controller is used to modify the bifurcation characteristics of the system, such as the bifurcation appearing at the equilibrium point in the control system moves forward, moves backward or disappears, so as to achieve the effect of preventing or alleviating traffic congestion. In the process of collecting traffic information, traditional traffic flow control methods have some problems, such as high loss rate of sensing and detection information and long average queue length, which lead to the unsatisfactory effect of traffic control and evacuation in main roads. Therefore, based on multi-sensor information fusion technology, this study designs a new intelligent control method of traffic flow on main road. According to the multi-sensor information, the fusion algorithm and measurement equation are designed to obtain the main road traffic sensor position, vehicle linear velocity and other parameters, and update the fusion results in real time. Then, the short-term characteristics of traffic flow are used to control the appearance time of target section. Based on the ordinary differential equation, the main road traffic network is represented by intelligent directed graph, and the intelligent dredging model of urban main road traffic flow is constructed. The simulation results show that in five experimental roads, the average delay time of this method is less than 35 s, the maximum average number of stops is only 8.8, the average queue length is less than 30 m, the average travel speed is more than 25 km/h, the traffic flow per unit time is more than 250veh/10 min, and the traffic congestion index of main road is always more than 5.5. Traffic congestion is a major concern in urban centers, as it can affect society, the environment, and the economy. There are many studies on the use of computational intelligence (CI) to improve mobility in urban centers. Some of these researches focus on developing strategies for traffic light programming, since traffic coordination is complex due to its many parameters, variables, and dynamic behavior, and also an inefficient traffic control plan can lead to increased delays and contribute to traffic congestion. Although there are many works in the literature on strategies for traffic control, there are still some contributions and gaps to be filled, especially because some studies do not consider the automatic optimization of traffic signals in real time, that is, according to the demand of vehicles on the roads, considering multiple objectives and the use of a network of intersections in their experiments. In addition, some of the proposed models are not independent of simulation to evaluate the solutions of CI algorithms, resulting in a more complex deployment in real situations. In this context, this paper presents a new method to optimize traffic light plan in a network of intersections and in real time, called Active Control of Traffic Signals (ACTS) associated with the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, considering multiple objectives in the optimization process (minimizing the average delay time and the number of vehicles stops per cycle). To test the applicability of the model, a real dataset of vehicle demand collected by the Company of Transport and Traffic of Belo Horizonte (BHTrans) is loaded into the AIMSUN simulator, then the method is applied and compared with the current traffic control plan used by BHTrans. The results show that the ACTS method reduces the average vehicle delay by almost half compared to the results obtained with the current solution used by BHTrans. Smart cities can effectively improve urban life quality. But, with the rise in population size, there is an increase in the use of vehicles for transportation. In smart city development, traffic control and route planning are the primary tasks to address the problem of travel time estimation. It has become complex due to concerns of wrapped spatio-temporal data on dynamic real-time traffic conditions. The existing methods failed to estimate travel time efficiently due to not considering the spatio-temporal features and lack of computing resources. There is a need for a system like intelligent transportation system to monitor and accurately predict traffic flow to avoid traffic congestion and reduce the impact on the ecological system. This paper developed a novel hybrid deep learning model to estimate optimized travel time and possible trajectories. In this work, U-Net used to reduce the number of feature points for each temporal data and GNN is used to build the graph with connectivity between vehicular nodes. This hybrid model helps us predict traffic flow and aims to estimate accurate travel time from one location (node) to another. The model's performance is evaluated on the standard benchmark datasets Q-Traffic, TaxiBJ, and Chengdu. The experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly improves performance in extracting travel patterns and provides an optimal route with an estimated travel time than existing methods with RMSE 4%, MAE 20.49%, and MAPE 18%. The rapid development of urbanization in China has contributed to traffic events, such as traffic accidents and delays. It is difficult to detect and resolve highway traffic congestion in a timely manner using traditional methods because they are slow, require a large number of workers, and require the installation of a large amount of monitoring equipment. Therefore, it is imperative to introduce advanced technology to address these challenges. Recently, deep learning technology has made significant breakthroughs and has been widely applied to various fields with satisfactory results. Deep learning is among the most important technologies for the detection and evaluation of traffic congestion, enabling the accurate detection of the state of the expressway network's traffic congestion, the evaluation of traffic congestion, and the prediction of possible traffic congestion. This enables management to formulate traffic dredging strategies in advance to prevent the negative impact of traffic congestion on normal traffic flow. This paper proposes a framework based on deep learning for next-generation highway traffic management. This framework selects traffic congestion indicators to construct an index model, and then constructs a deep learning model based on self-coding. It predicts and classifies highway traffic environment data and excavates sample data based on the characteristics of traffic parameters. As soon as traffic data were classified, a prediction model based on SoftMax was established to detect and predict highway traffic congestion. We conducted a traffic congestion analysis of the Shanghai expressway network based on the speed performance data obtained from the China Traffic Management Bureau. As a result of their research, we developed an index to measure highway traffic congestion. For traffic control and management organizations to function effectively, it is crucial to have an accurate and clear picture of traffic network operations. We evaluated the proposed framework using data gathered from highway monitoring scenes, and the results indicated that 98.6% of the data could be correctly detected. Using the prediction model based on SoftMax for expressway vehicles during peak hours, the accuracy was 92%, and the misjudgment rate was 8%. This study demonstrates that detecting and evaluating the state of highway traffic environments using deep learning has high accuracy, can be applied to actual highway traffic systems, and is extremely useful for detecting highway congestion. Accurate traffic flow forecasting (TFF) is a prerequisite for urban traffic control and guidance, which has become the key to avoiding traffic congestion and improving traffic management in intelligent transportation systems. To precisely characterize the spatial structure of road networks and discover temporal and spatial characteristics, we propose an attention-based spatial–temporal adaptive dual-graph convolutional network (ASTA-DGCN) for TFF in this paper. Specifically, we employ a spatial–temporal attention module to explore the hidden temporal correlation information of traffic data and the implicit influence of weights among road network nodes and to further capture the dynamic influence of different spatial–temporal positions on the current spatial–temporal position. Then, we utilize an adaptive graph modeling module to automatically extract the one-way relationship between variables and integrate external knowledge into the module. The FastDTW algorithm is exploited to measure the similarity of road network nodes, and the non-Euclidean pairwise association between regions is encoded into graphs to discover the hidden temporal pattern similarity effectively. Furthermore, temporal and spatial correlations are explicitly modeled using dual-graph convolution and sequential convolution based on the obtained graphs to mine the spatial–temporal patterns in dynamic traffic flow, and the final prediction result is produced based on the weighted fusion of the output values of the recent, daily, and weekly components. Finally, the ASTA-DGCN algorithm is successfully applied to TFF on two real-world traffic datasets. In this paper, first we introduce the notions of size, order, and degree of vertices and edges in a soft graph, and we give some examples for a better understanding of these concepts. Then, we define the fundamental concepts of the adjacency matrix of soft graphs, complement of soft graphs, and regularity based on the degree of vertices of soft graphs, and we investigate some related results. Moreover, we introduce the concept of soft multiset and soft multigraph and define the notions of union, intersection, complement, and sum, and then we investigate the relations among them. Predicting future traffic state (e.g., traffic speed, volume, travel time, etc.) accurately is highly desirable for traffic management and control. However, network-wide traffic flow has complicated spatial-temporal dependencies, making it challenging to predict. This study proposes a multi-weighted graph 3D convolution network (MWG3D) to predict future network-wide traffic speed, considering the spatial-temporal heterogeneous effects of multiple external factors (i.e., points of interests (POIs), roadway physical characteristics and incidents). The network is composed of a Graph-3D convolution (G3D) module and an incident impact module. In G3D module, a weighted graph convolution is developed first, which extracts complex spatial dependencies of traffic flow considering heterogeneous effects of POIs and roadway physical characteristics. These external factors have great influence on the periodicity of human daily activities, which in turn cyclically affect traffic flow. The weighted graph convolution is further connected with 3D convolutions to extract temporal dependencies of traffic flow, accounting for temporal heterogeneous effects of these external factors. An incident impact module is separately developed to account for spatial-temporal heterogeneous effects of incidents. These external factors could lead to abrupt and temporary changes in traffic flow. The proposed network is evaluated on two real-world datasets. Accurate assessment of road conditions can effectively alleviate traffic congestion and guide people's travel plans, traffic control decisions of transportation departments, and formulation of traffic-related laws and regulations. This paper proposes a quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) and adaptive hybrid exponential smoothing with residual correction (AHES-RC) for the nonlinearity and randomness of traffic flow. In the proposed algorithm, the single–double-exponential smoothing method is mixed with adaptive weights to form AHES, a new method of mixing weights according to real-time traffic trend changes. After the residual correction of AHES is calculated by the extreme learning machine algorithm, the parameters of AHES-RC are optimized using QPSO to improve the prediction accuracy further. This paper comprehensively compares the QPSO-AHES-RC algorithm with other benchmark models through testing on 26 real-world data sets. The results show that the proposed algorithm can adaptive forecasting under various traffic conditions, yielding the best forecasting performance in terms of various forecast error metrics. Compared with advanced machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost and CatBoost, the mean RMSE and mean MAPE have been improved by over 20% on average. The construction and operation of linear infrastructure has major impacts on biodiversity through loss of habitat, increased mortality and loss of connectivity. In particular, minimising the impact of roads which pass through ecologically sensitive areas on surrounding species at the construction and operational phases is critical for conservation. However, potential impacts are rarely known perfectly at the construction phase and early in the operational phase. To address this problem, a company could build flexibility into road operation so that it can respond rapidly to future ecological impacts if necessary. In this paper we analyse the value of this flexibility using stochastic dynamic programming and use the results to guide a global search algorithm to find high value roads in the region. We consider flexibility in terms of the proportion of traffic volume routed along the road, with the remainder passing along an existing higher-cost, lower-impact road. We applied this to an example scenario where a road must be routed through a region with a vulnerable species present. By incorporating flexibility, the proposed model was able to find a road that met a desired ending population of animals and was more valuable than roads found under existing design alternatives. Bifurcation of traffic flow involves complex dynamic characteristics of the system. In order to understand the complex traffic phenomenon, this work designed a macro traffic model considering the driver's memory which plays an important role in the traffic flow. Based on this model, we investigate the effects of the driver's memory and wave velocity on the stability of the traffic flow. By means of one and two parameter bifurcation analysis, we explore how these parameters affect the bifurcation structure of the system, and further investigate the dynamic mechanisms of traffic flow. We explain various traffic phenomena related to the different types of equilibrium points and limit cycles by phase plane analysis. We also study how the initial density and bifurcation structure affect the energy consumption in the system. The results show that the driver's memory and wave velocity play an important role in the stability of the traffic flow. Computational science depends on complex, data intensive applications operating on datasets from a variety of scientific instruments. A major challenge is the integration of data into the scientist's workflow. Recent advances in dynamic, networked cloud resources provide the building blocks to construct reconfiguration, end-to-end infrastructure that can increase scientific productivity, but applications are not taking advantage of them. In our previous work, we introduced DyNamo, that enabled CASA scientists to improve the efficiency of their operations and effortlessly leverage capabilities of the cloud resources available to them that previously remained underutilized. However, the provided workflow automation did not satisfy all the operational requirements of CASA. Custom scripts were still in production to manage workflow triggering, while multiple layer 2 connections would have to be allocated to maintain network QoS requirements. To address these issues, we enhance the DyNamo system with advanced network manipulation mechanisms, end-to-end infrastructure monitoring and ensemble workflow management capabilities. DyNamo's Virtual Software Defined Exchange (vSDX) capabilities have been extended, enabling link adaptation, flow prioritization and traffic control between endpoints. These new features allow us to enforce network QoS requirements for each workflow ensemble and can lead to more fair network sharing. Additionally, to accommodate CASA's operational needs we have extended the newly integrated Pegasus Ensemble Manager with event based triggering functionality, that improves managing CASA's workflow ensembles. The Pegasus Ensemble Manager, apart from managing the workflow ensembles can also create conditions for a more fair resource usage, by employing throttling techniques to reduce compute and network resource contention. We evaluate the effects of the DyNamo's vSDX policies by using two CASA workflow ensembles competing for network resources, and we show that traffic shaping of the ensembles can lead to a fairer sharing of the network links. Finally, we study how changing the Pegasus Ensemble Manager's throttling for each of the two workflow ensembles affects their performance while they compete for the same network resources, and we assess if this approach is a viable alternative compared to the vSDX policies. Traffic congestion is becoming a serious problem with the large number of vehicle on the roads. In the traditional traffic control system, the timing of the green light is adjusted regardless of the average traffic rate at the junction. Many strategies have been introduced to solve and improve vehicle management. However, in order to handle road traffic issues, an intelligent traffic management solution is required. This article represents a self adaptive real-time traffic light control algorithm based on the traffic flow. We present a machine learning approach coupled with image processing to manage the traffic clearance at the signal junction. The proposed system utilizes single image processing via neural network and You Only Look Once (YOLOv3) framework to establish traffic clearance at the signal. We employed YOLO architectures because it is accurate in terms of mean average precision (mAP), interaction over union (IOU) values and fast in object detection tasks as well. It runs significantly faster than other detection methods with comparable performance. The average processing time of single image was estimated to be 1.3 s. Further based on the input from YOLO we estimated the 'on' time period green light for effective traffic clearance. Several real time parameters like number of vehicles (two wheelers, four wheelers), road width and junction crossing time are considered to estimate the 'on'time of green light. Moreover, we used the real traffic images to test the performance and trained the system with different dataset. Our experiments investigation reveals that the predicted vehicle counts were well matched with the actual vehicle count and proposed method apprehended an average accuracy of 81.1%. Traffic lights are an important controlling factor in traffic flows, and good policies will facilitate traffic congestion. A car's waiting time is highly related to the period in which the traffic lights are green or red; thus, a proper controlling policy reduces the waiting time and speeds up the car movement. Emergency vehicles always have a higher priority than other cars and need to reach their destination faster. In the last decade, a lot of research has been done to solve the traffic light scheduling issue using artificial intelligence techniques. Reinforcement learning with simulating human learning has the outstanding performance to solve complex problems, such as traffic lights control. In this study, a deep reinforcement learning traffic light control was implemented at a crossroad using real-time traffic information with an emphasis on emergency vehicles. The agent learns to adjust its policies to prioritize the emergency cars over the other cars. The results show less waiting time and speed up the cars' movement. It also indicates the emergency vehicles will cross the intersection with the least delay. With 200 to 600 cars and one emergency vehicle, the average delay decreases 2–16% in total using reinforcement learning. Urban mobility is one of the critical challenges in modern cities that should be tackled carefully. The exponential growth of cars number badly impacts the transportation system (TS) on which most cities are living on. Traffic control is one of the most critical issues in TS, which depends on a set of cooperative traffic lights. Smart Traffic lights, which can receive and analyze traffic data, can solve traffic problems by efficiently predict the accurate waiting time for each traffic lane at the intersections. This can improve the traffic flow and accordingly promotes the transportation system performance. This paper introduces a Fog-Based Traffic Light Management Strategy (TLMS) based on Fuzzy Inference Engine. TLMS can accurately calculate the optimal waiting time for each traffic lane at the intersections to decrease the average waiting time for the stopped vehicles. TLMS applies Vehicle to infrastructure protocol (V2I) that allows vehicles to interact directly with the infrastructure of the road such as GPS sensors and the traffic light signals. At each traffic intersection, the number of waiting vehicles, their locations relative to TLMS, and their sizes are detected and sent to TLMS in real time. Then, based on fuzzy inference, TLMS can calculate the optimal waiting time for each lane, which optimizes the traffic flow at the intersection by minimizing the waiting time for the vehicles. The performance of the proposed TLMS has been compared and tested against recently proposed techniques via simulation. The results of the experiment showed that TLMS outperforms recent technologies as it minimizes the average waiting time of vehicles around the intersections and accordingly maximizes the performance of the traffic system. Traffic flow forecasting (TFF) is critical for constructing intelligent transportation systems and offering real-time traffic applications, and especially accurate flow forecasting based on traffic big data can drive reliable strategies for traffic management and control. To consider the weight of the influence of the spatial correlation among the road segments and capture the nonlinear characteristics of traffic flow, this paper presents a parallel Normal Distribution and Attention Mechanism Weighted Deep Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (NAW-DBLSTM) algorithm on Spark. Specifically, we employ the resilient distributed data set (RDD) to preprocess large-scale mobile trajectory data (e.g., taxi GPS trajectory data), and then Kalman Filter (KF) is utilized to smooth the taxi trajectory big data. Next, the parallel NAW-DBLSTM algorithm is put forward on a Spark distributed computing platform to enhance the accuracy and scalability of TFF, combined with the attention mechanism and the normal distribution, and then the time window is used for TFF. Finally, the traffic flow is forecasted successfully on Spark by our NAW-DBLSTM algorithm with the real-world GPS trajectories of taxicabs. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with LSTM, BiLSTM, DBLSTM, DNN, SVR, KNN, SAEs, BP, CNN, GRU, and ANNs, NAW-DBLSTM can produce better performance with the MAPE value that is 85.1%, 80.1%, 85.8%, 73.1%, 78.2%, 77.9%, 78.8%, 84.6%, 96.4%, 86.2%, and 73.2% lower than that of comparable algorithms, respectively. This paper is devoted to the mathematical modeling of traffic flow in a large automobile network. A statistical model of traffic flow proposed by the authors and designed for full-scale modeling of the operation of large-scale transport systems on long time intervals is used. A model has been constructed for one of the sides of the Moscow Ring Road and experiments have been carried out for two ways of jamming on the highway. The functionality of the naive entry control model has been tested in both types of the experiments. A statistical model of traffic flows designed for modeling the motion of vehicles on long highways is proposed. The model simulates the motion of groups of vehicles on the road using the fundamental flow–density diagram on a selected segment of the road with the purpose of calculating the speed of the group; it is assumed that the group size linearly depends on its speed. The proposed approach combines the advantages of macroscopic and microscopic simulation. That is, it allows one to simulate the motion of vehicles in megalopolises to a high accuracy and with low requirements for computational resources. The principles of simulation are described, algorithms for recalculating the model states are presented, and computational experiments confirming the validity and workability of the simulation results for various configurations of the road network are discussed. As the global economy develops rapidly, traffic congestion has become a major problem for first-tier cities in various countries. In order to address the problem of failed real-time control of the traffic flow data by the traditional traffic light control as well as malicious attack and other security problems faced by the intelligent traffic light (ITL) control system, a multi-agent distributed ITL control method was proposed based on the fog computing platform and the Q learning algorithm used for the reinforcement learning in this study, and the simulation comparison was conducted by using the simulation platform jointly constructed based on the VISSIM-Excel VBA-MATLAB software. Subsequently, on the basis of puzzle difficulty of the computational Diffie–Helleman (CDH) and Hash Collision, the applicable security control scheme of ITL under the fog computing was proposed. The results reveal that the proposed intelligent control system prolongs the time of green light properly when the number of vehicles increases, thereby reducing the delay time and retention rate of vehicles; the security control scheme of ITL based on the puzzle of CDH is less efficient when the vehicle density increases, while that based on the puzzle of Hash collision is very friendly to the fog equipment. Short-term traffic flow prediction is an important basis of intelligent transportation systems. Its accuracy directly affects the performance of traffic control and induction. To improve prediction accuracy, in this paper, a traffic flow prediction model is proposed by combining hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC), standardized Euclidean distance (SED), and a long short-term memory network (LSTM). The proposed model is called the CHS-LSTM model. In this model, HAC is used to carry out cluster analysis on the original traffic flow data sample set of target detection sections. Based on the results of cluster analysis, traffic flow data are divided into several categories. For different categories of traffic flow, SED is used to calculate the spatial correlation of the road network where the target sections are located, and the K sections most relevant to the target detection sections are used in the construction of an input data matrix for LSTM. The prediction result with the minimum root-mean-square error is regarded as the final prediction result. The electronic toll collection data of Taiwan are used as the fundamental data in this paper to verify the performance and effectiveness of the CHS-LSTM model. The experimental results indicate that the CHS-LSTM model can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of LSTM. In order to improve the traffic efficiency of official vehicles in the traffic road network, a backpressure routing control strategy for multi-commodity flow (official traffic flow) using official vehicle network environmental data information is proposed. Firstly, the road network composed of official service vehicle-mounted wireless network nodes is used to collect information on road conditions and official service vehicles. In order to improve the real-time and forward-looking route control, an official service vehicle flow forecasting method is introduced to construct a virtual official service vehicle queue. A multi-commodity flow (official service vehicle flow) backpressure route method is proposed, and an official service vehicle control strategy is designed to improve the self-adaptive route of K-means algorithm. In addition, the weight of backpressure strategy is improved according to traffic pressure conditions, and the adaptability of backpressure route algorithm is improved by using optimized parameters. In this paper, we propose enhanced fundamental diagrams based on different water film depths by considering the effects of hydroplaning using a physical method. Various factors are calculated to describe the total safe distance headway of main vehicle components. These factors include the driver reaction times, reaction distances, vehicle braking times, and vehicle braking distances corresponding to different water film depths. An excellent match is found between the computed braking distance, the braking time calculated using the proposed numerical model, and the results published in other papers. These calculations are performed to estimate the distance headway and quantitatively analyse the relationships between the speed, density, and water film depth. By using three road-specific parameters estimated by our proposed model, namely, the free-flow speed, jam density, and capacity flow, a link transmission model is developed to analyse the dynamic impact of the water film depth. Traffic streams in most of the urban areas of developing countries are highly heterogeneous with poor lane discipline. Traffic simulation and optimization packages based on microscopic traffic flow models are popular for modeling traffic flow and optimizing traffic controls all around the globe. However, applying microsimulation packages to model undisciplined and heterogeneous traffic streams may not yield perfect results. But, macroscopic models can be easily calibrated for such heterogeneous and undisciplined traffic streams. This research applies the calibrated Cell Transmission Model (CTM)-based optimization tool to determine optimal signal plans and to evaluate the potential of reduction in control delay at signalized intersections. Most of the traffic signals in Karachi are pre-timed with a constant signal plan throughout the day, despite significant changes in traffic dynamics within a day. This study evaluates the performance of existing signal timing plans at two different locations in Karachi. The selected locations include a segment of urban arterial with three consecutive signals in close proximity. The second location was a standalone signalized intersection. Twelve-hour traffic and delay data on typical working days were collected through video recording technique. The data collected from the field were simulated using CTM-based signal optimization software, DISCO. The optimization results show an improvement of 45% in the existing delay at the selected segment of Khayaban-e-Ittehad. The delay at KDA intersection can be reduced by 29% by optimizing signal plans. Based on the hypothesis that all vehicles on roads are floating vehicles equipped with vehicular terminals and upload their traffic information to the traffic control center in real time, many traffic flow guidance algorithms are proposed in order to improve the road capacity in Intelligent Transportation System. Based on this complete information scenario, the traffic control center can obtain all traffic information on roads and compute the guidance metrics according to the traffic flow guidance algorithm. The vehicle therefore can select the route with the guidance. However, due to the cost and technology limits, in short time, some vehicles cannot be equipped with vehicular terminals, which are non-floating vehicles and cannot upload their traffic information to the traffic control center. In this incomplete information scenario, the guidance effect will be affected by non-floating vehicles. In this paper, the method of estimating non-floating vehicles' driving information according to floating vehicles' information is introduced. With the estimation method, a new traffic flow guidance algorithm, Estimated Weighted Vehicle Density Feedback Strategy based on Weighted Vehicle Density Feedback Strategy (WVDFS) is proposed. In the simulation, the guidance effect of the new algorithm is performed based on the two-route scenario, which is the simplified model of traffic network. NaSch model is also used as the vehicle mobility model, which can simulate the vehicle motion. The simulation results show that non-floating vehicles have great negative influence on the performance of WVDFS, and the applicability of our algorithm is validated to have better performance in incomplete information scenarios. Mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG) or Pavement ME Design requires traffic inputs in three levels based on the availability of data and the importance of the project. The availability of site-specific (Level 1) traffic data is generally limited due to expensive cost and the accuracy of Level 3 average is unsatisfactory, and therefore the intermedium level (Level 2) traffic data need to be developed. Using multiple years of weigh-in-motion (WIM) and vehicle classification data from Oklahoma, this paper starts with a comprehensive check of the traffic data quality, and generates site-specific traffic inputs that are required in Pavement ME Design. Cluster analysis is then applied to develop homogeneous groups for each traffic input. Subsequently, decision tree model and multinomial regression model are developed for the selection of appropriate traffic clusters under given site design conditions. With the increasing number of vehicles in large- and medium-sized cities challenges in urban traffic management, control, and road planning are being faced. Taxi GPS trajectory data is a novel data source that can be used to study the potential dynamic traffic characteristics of urban roads, and thus identify locations that show a notable lack of road planning. Considering that road traffic characteristics on their own are insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of urban traffic, we develop a road traffic characteristic time series clustering model to analyze the relationship between urban road traffic characteristics and road grade based on existing taxi trajectory data. We select the main urban area of Nanjing as our study area and use the taxi trajectory data of a single month for evaluating our method. The experiments show that the clustering model exhibit good performance and can be successfully used for road traffic characteristic classification. Moreover, we analyze the correlation between traffic characteristics and road grade to identify road segments with planning designs that do not match the actual traffic demands. In recent years, the number of motor vehicles in the country has risen rapidly. Traffic demand has continued to grow, while land resources, capital and energy have become increasingly tense. The development trend of urban transport system is not optimistic. Especially in the face of major events, vehicle evacuation suddenly increased, which is a serious planning for the evacuation of a serious challenge. Reasonable and accurate implementation of the emergency evacuation plan is to make the evacuation time at least, to minimize the major traffic congestion protection. Among them, route selection and traffic flow distribution are the core contents of emergency evacuation plan. In this paper, traffic emergency evacuation of major activities is taken as the research object, and the state vector of each road is introduced into the navigation system according to the linking analysis algorithm thought. Purpose: Freight vehicle parking facilities at large urban freight traffic generators, such as urban retail malls, are often characterized by a high volume of vehicle arrivals and a poor parking supply infrastructure. Recurrent congestion of freight parking facilities generates environmental (e.g. pollution), economic (e.g. delays in deliveries) and social (e.g. traffic) negative externalities. Solutions aimed at either improving or better managing the existing parking infrastructure rely heavily on data and data-driven models to predict their impact and guide their implementation. In the current work, we provide a quantitative study of the parking supply and freight vehicle drivers' parking behaviour at urban retail malls. Methods: We use as case studies two typical urban retail malls located in Singapore, and collect detailed data on freight vehicles delivering or picking up goods at these malls. Insights from this data collection effort are relayed as data stories. We first describe the parking facility at a mall as a queueing system, where freight vehicles are the agents and their decisions are the parking location choice and the parking duration. Results: Using the data collected, we analyse (i) the arrival rates of vehicles at the observed malls, (ii) the empirical distribution of parking durations at the loading bays, (iii) the factors that influence the parking duration, (iv) the empirical distribution of waiting times spent by freight vehicle queueing to access the loading bay, and (v) the driver parking location choices and how this choice is influenced by system congestion. Conclusions: This characterisation of freight driver behaviour and parking facility system performance enables one to understand current challenges, and begin to explore the feasibility of freight parking and loading bay management solutions. Purpose: Road traffic incidents cause delay, affect public safety and the environment. The CEDR PRIMA project aims to extend practical guidance for traffic managers in pro-active Traffic Incident Management (TIM) techniques to reduce the impacts and associated costs of incidents. Methods: The paper describes modelling methods used in the project for assessing the effect of different management techniques on incident duration and travel delay under various scenarios, including collision, adverse weather, heavy vehicle breakdown and other obstruction, assuming various management strategies and generic impacts of novel technologies. Macroscopic simulations of 178 variations of 13 basic scenarios have been performed using a flexible and computationally efficient macroscopic queue model, results being verified by simulation using a velocity-based Cell Transmission Model (CTM-v). Results: The results of the two modelling methods are broadly consistent. While delays estimated by the two methods can differ by up to 20%, this is small compared to the factor of 30 range of modelled delays caused by incidents, depending on their nature and circumstances, and is not sufficient to affect general conclusions. Under the peak traffic conditions assumed, the most important factor affecting delay is whether running lanes can be kept open, but quick clearance of carriageway is not always feasible. Conclusions: Comparison of two very different modelling methods confirms their consistency within the context of highly scenario-dependent results, giving confidence in the results. Future research and data needs include further validation of the models, potential application to traffic flow and conflict prediction and incident prevention, and more complete and consistent recording of incident timelines and impacts. Development of speed model is a challenging task particularly under mixed traffic condition where the traffic composition plays a significant role in determining the individual vehicle speed. Estimation of passenger car equivalent (PCE) which is essential in converting the mixed traffic volume into its equivalent homogeneous also requires the speed information of individual vehicle categories at varying traffic conditions on the road. The present research was carried out to model the individual vehicle speed and to study the effects of traffic volume and its composition on individual speed and PCE in the context of urban mixed traffic. Traffic data on classified traffic volume and speed information were collected at six-lane divided arterial mid-block road sections in New Delhi, India. The methodology of artificial neural network was adopted to develop a volume-based speed prediction model for individual vehicle category. Validation results showed a great deal of agreement between the predicted and the observed speeds. Then, the sensitivity analysis was performed utilizing the model developed in order to examine the effects of traffic volume and its composition on individual speed and corresponding PCE. Purpose In order to explore the effect of curb parking on dynamic traffic and formulate some reasonable and effective traffic management measures, the effects on capacity and traffic safety are studied. Methods Four road segments with curb parking were selected as the investigation location. Several traffic characteristics and parameters were then investigated and counted, including traffic flow volume, speed, headway and traffic conflict. Based on a reduction of lane effective width and the Gap Acceptance Theory, two effect models describing curb parking and road capacity were constructed. Considering the factors involved in motor vehicle conflicts (such as non-motor vehicle lane distribution and stopping sight distance), the effects of curb parking on both motor vehicle and non-motor vehicle traffic safety was analyzed, as well as pedestrian crossing safety. This case study analyzes both the capacity and traffic safety of all four investigation segments. Results Results show that the lane effective width of road segment with curb parking significantly influences the road capacity and impacts the traffic flow volumes of the parking lane and its adjacent lane. In order to ensure that traffic capacity is stable, and avoid incident congestion is anabatic, a double-layer ramp-metering model is proposed in this paper to control the traffic flow at each on-ramp, nearby incident congestion. The function of the lower model is to recognize where the incident congestion exists, based on an adaptive neural network, whose inputs are traffic flow, velocity and density. The outputs of the lower model are the section number where the congestion occurs and the ramp number which should be controlled. If there is congestion, the upper model would be activated. The function of the upper model is to calculate the control strategy. The required control ramp number from the lower model would be transmitted to the upper model together with the real-time state of controlled section. The upper model would calculate the ramp-metering ratio for each required ramp by minimizing the main time cost, total average queue length and equity index. In order to describe the traffic state more accurately, a tailored traffic model for urban freeway in China is established in the upper model to get the prediction, which considers the speed-limited value on main roadway, and corrects the calculation method of traffic flow state on origin point and exit ramp. Braess's paradox exposes a counterintuitive phenomenon that when travelers selfishly choose their routes in a network, removing links can improve the overall network performance. Under the model of nonatomic selfish routing, we characterize the topologies of k-commodity undirected and directed networks in which Braess's paradox never occurs. The traffic input parameters in the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) are: (a) general traffic inputs, (b) traffic volume adjustment factors, and (c) axle load spectra (ALS). Of these three traffic inputs, the traffic volume adjustment factors specifically monthly adjustment factor (MAF) and the ALS are widely considered to be important and sensitive factors, which can significantly affect design of and prediction of distress in flexible pavements. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess the sensitivity of ALS and MAF traffic inputs on rutting distress of a flexible pavement. The traffic data of four years (from 2008 to 2012) were collected from an instrumented test section on I-35 in Oklahoma. Site specific traffic input parameters were developed. It was observed that significant differences exist between the MEPDG default and developed site-specific traffic input values. However, the differences in the yearly ALS and MAF data, developed for these four years, were not found to be as significant when compared to one another. In addition, quarterly field rut data were measured on the test section and compared with the MEPDG predicted rut values using the default and developed traffic input values for different years. The increasing volume of traffic in cities has a significant effect on the road traffic congestions and the time it takes for road users to reach their destinations as well. Adaptive signal control system has shown powerful ability to effectively alleviate urban traffic congestions to achieve desirable objectives (e.g., minimization of delay). The real-time adaptive traffic signal control system can obtain traffic density information by taking advantage of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication system to prepare efficient measurement statistics for traffic controllers. In this paper, we present a novel multi-agent based control method for an integrated network of adaptive traffic signal controllers under V2I communication environment which is characterized by the following features: flow model free, area coordinated, co-learning and suitable for parallel processing. Our method has been tested on a large-scale network covering 23 km $$^{2}$$ with 22 intersections in the downtown area of Xiaogan, China. This paper introduces a new centrality measure, nominated by the authors as mobility centrality ( C), which arose during the study of the interregional road network in Greece. The proposed measure is constructed by the use of the anagogic method considering the formula of the kinetic energy of a particle in Physics and adjusting its mathematical analogue to the case of the interregional road network. The new centrality measure is estimated to be useful for the operational analysis of a network (such as the analysis of network flows), since it characterizes as central these vertices that appear to have the greatest tendency to attract or expel network flows. The ability of the proposed centrality measure to illustrate flow tendencies was examined empirically by correlating and regressing mobility centrality to the commuting status of the Greek interregional network and to four of the most common existing centrality measures (betweenness, closeness, straightness and degree centrality) of the available data. The empirical analysis indicated that the proposed centrality measure ( C) presents sufficient ability to describe the status of the Greek interregional commuting system and it is believed that it is able to describe the inner potential that produces flows in a network. A novel algorithm capable of estimating free space for vehicle navigation is presented. When a disparity map - dense or sparse - from stereo matching and a longitudinal profile of the road surface on the disparity domain are provided, the free space is estimated precisely. According to the longitudinal profile of the road surface, the disparity map is classified into an obstacle disparity map and a road surface disparity map. After combining these two disparity maps through a score map, a border line separating the road surface and the non-road surface is estimated using dynamic programming on a udisparity representation. The main contribution of the proposed approach is the robust detection of the free space and the distance between stereo cameras and obstacles, whereby the detection is sufficiently rapid for vehicle navigation. Roads impact wildlife in multiple ways, most conspicuous amongst which are animal-vehicle collisions (AVCs). Mitigation measures to reduce AVCs at the local scale are often centred on species-specific crossing zones and collision hotspots. However, at the road network scale, consideration of interactions among road, species and traffic characteristics influencing AVC occurrence is required to design effective mitigation strategies. We modelled traversability—the probability of an animal successfully crossing a road- across an Indian highway for six large mammal species under different scenarios of road and traffic characteristics. Among the study species, group-living and slow-moving animals had higher AVC probabilities that increased significantly with increasing traffic volume and proportions of heavy vehicles in the traffic flow. The risk of AVC was higher for species that were active near roadside habitat during peak traffic hours. Our approach could help identify roads that pose potential mortality risks to animals using empirical data on animal and traffic characteristics. Results suggest that regulating traffic volume and heterogeneity on existing road stretches could potentially reduce animal mortality and barrier effect. Mitigation on roads expected to carry heavy traffic loads passing through ecologically-sensitive areas should be prioritised to ensure traversability for animal communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Due to the menacing increase in the number of vehicles on a daily basis, abating road congestion is becoming a key challenge these years. To cope-up with the prevailing traffic scenarios and to meet the ever-increasing demand for traffic, the urban transportation system needs effective solution methodologies. Changes made in the urban infrastructure will take years, sometimes may not even be feasible. For this reason, traffic signal timing (TST) optimization is one of the fastest and most economical ways to curtail congestion at the intersections and improve traffic flow in the urban network. Purpose: Researchers have been working on using a variety of approaches along with the exploitation of technology to improve TST. This article is intended to analyze the recent literature published between January 2015 and January 2020 for the computational intelligence (CI) based simulation approaches and CI-based approaches for optimizing TST and Traffic Signal Control (TSC) systems, provide insights, research gaps and possible directions for future work for researchers interested in the field. Methods: In analyzing the complex dynamic behavior of traffic streams, simulation tools have a prominent place. Nowadays, microsimulation tools are frequently used in TST related researches. For this reason, a critical review of some of the widely used microsimulation packages is provided in this paper. Background: The intersection traffic signal control problem (ITSCP) has become even more important as traffic congestion has been more intractable. The ITSCP seeks an efficient schedule for traffic signal settings at intersections with the goal of maximizing traffic flow while considering various factors such as real-time strategies, signal timing constraints, rapid developments in traffic systems, and practical implementation. Since the factors constituting the ITSCP exhibit stochastically complicated interactions, it is essential to identify these factors to propose solution methods that can address this complexity and still be practically implemented. Objective: The objective of this review is to provide a survey of problems, methods, and practices in the evaluation of the ITSCP. In this paper, a unified terminology for the ITSCP and a citation network of the current body of relevant research are accordingly presented, and various assumptions, constraints, and solution approaches are summarized. A review across the entire body of knowledge throughout the history of the ITSCP is therefore provided. Quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) is the mathematical formalism for phrasing and solving a class of optimization problems that are combinatorial in nature. Due to their natural equivalence with the two-dimensional Ising model for ferromagnetism in statistical mechanics, problems from the QUBO class can be solved on quantum annealing hardware. In this paper, we report a QUBO formatting of the problem of optimal control of time-dependent traffic signals on an artificial grid-structured road network so as to ease the flow of traffic, and the use of D-Wave Systems' quantum annealer to solve it. Since current-generation D-Wave annealers have a limited number of qubits and limited inter-qubit connectivity, we adopt a hybrid (classical/quantum) approach to this problem. As traffic flow is a continuous and evolving phenomenon, we address this time-dependent problem by adopting a workflow to generate and solve multiple problem instances periodically. This paper studies the rate control algorithm to improve the performance of semi-TCP, which adopts a buffer-based hop-by-hop congestion control mechanism. By analyzing the impact of the buffer-based sending strategy on the medium contention and interference, we find that this sending strategy is too aggressive to increase the throughput, which leads to severe contention and interference in the channel. Extensive simulations are then carried out and reveal the significance of the channel status of the first hop in rate control. Based on the findings in the simulations, we propose a binary search-based rate control to improve semi-TCP using only local information. The proposed rate control relies on the media status in the first hop to adjust the source rate to approach the peak throughput, without the assistance of end-to-end feedback. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the end-to-end throughput and delay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
