In this study, we evaluated a novel functional monomer (4-formylphenyl acrylate [FA]) that can specifically and covalently bind to the dentin collagen matrix as a potential alternative hydrophobic diluent-like monomer for improving the durability of dentin bonding. Experimental adhesives with different FA contents (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) were evaluated as partial substituents for the hydrophilic monomer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, with the commercial adhesive One-Step (Bisco, Inc.) employed as the positive control. Their degree of conversion, viscosity, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, and water absorption/solubility were measured as the comprehensive characterization. In situ zymographic assays were performed to determine the extent to which FA inhibits the endogenous hydrolytic activity of dentin. Finally, the bonding performances of the novel adhesives were evaluated with microtensile strength tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the incorporation of FA significantly improved the mobility of experimental adhesives attributable to the dilution property of FA. In contrast to the possible compromised rate of polymerization by hydroxyethyl methacrylate, FA exhibited typical characteristics of favorable copolymerization with polymerizable monomers in adhesives and improved the degree of conversion of experimental adhesives. The rigidity and hydrophobic properties of the phenyl framework of the FA molecule conferred superior mechanical properties and hydrolysis resistance to the novel experimental adhesives. An inhibitory effect on gelatinolytic activities within the hybrid layer was also observed in the in situ zymographic assays, even at a low FA concentration (10%). In conjunction with the significantly improved infiltration found via scanning electron microscopy, the experimental adhesives containing FA possessed significantly better-maintained microtensile strength, even after aging. Thus, the incorporation of this novel monomer endowed the experimental adhesives with multiple enhanced functionalities. The chemical composition of the essential oils of Passiflora sexocellata and Passiflora trifasciata (Passifloraceae, subgenus Decaloba) were studied for the first time. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of fresh leaves and flowers. The chemical composition was assessed by using GC/FID and GC/MS. For P. sexocellata leaves, the optimized analytical procedure allowed the identification of 33 compounds (75% of the total oil composition) and 29 (74% of the total oil composition) in flowers. Regarding P. trifasciata, 35 compounds (76% of the total oil composition) were detected in leaves and 32 (71% of the total oil composition) in flowers. Terpenes and mono unsaturated hydrocarbons were quantified as major constituents of the volatile fraction in flowers (17.0 to 52.6%) and (13.7 to 20.0%). Organic acids were detected in both leaves and flowers with a percentage ranging from 3.3% to 32.0%. Aldehydes were also detected in leaves (12.6 to 41.4%) and in flowers (1.4 to 5.1%). The GC/MS analyzes allowed alcohols to be detected in leaves (20.6 to 42.9%) and in flowers (8.2 to 18.1%). These compounds represent the most important feature of the large Passiflora family. Background: The food truck industry has rapidly expanded in the United States and kitchen environments can contain harmful contaminants from cooking emissions. The objective of this study was to examine the levels of aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and Particulate Matter (PM)2.5 generated from cooking process in food trucks. Methods : Area sampling was performed twice at two participating food trucks during work shifts. Nine aldehydes and eighteeen PAHs were analyzed according to the relevant standard methods while PM2.5 was measured with a real time monitor. Ventilation performance of the food truck exhaust hoods was also investigated using a thermal anemometer. Findings : Formaldehyde was the only aldehyde detected in all samples with a concentration range of 7.16 to 53.68 µg/m3. No PAHs were detected above the limit of quantification. Average PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 0.65 to 7.03 mg/m3. Food Trucks 1 and 2 have an average exhaust flow rate of 211 and 215 L/s per linear meter of hood, respectively. Conclusions/Application to practice : Overall, Food Truck 2 had consistently higher levels of aldehydes and PM2.5 with comparable ventilation performance as Food Truck 1. The higher exposure levels of Food Truck 2 could possibly be attributed to a larger volume of food orders and the heavy duty cooking equipment with an exhaust flow rate below the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommendations. Although more investigations need to be performed, the findings could be used to raise awareness of food truck workers and health practitioners to reduce potential exposure risks. Ten novel ureido-substituted 1,3-benzoxazines were synthesized in moderate yields by La(OTf)3-catalyzed reaction of some aldehydes with four ureido-substituted 2-aminomethylphenols which were prepared by a one-pot method. Evaluation of their fungicidal activity revealed that most compounds showed moderate to good activity and one of the ureido-substituted 2-aminomethylphenols showed activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotonia sclerotiorum comparable to the control compound, chlorothalonil. Antarctic buildings are enclosed structures, which provide shelter and logistic support to researchers and personnel who remain indoors for long periods and can be affected by air pollution caused by construction materials and activities inside buildings. This study aims to investigate the indoor air quality at the Brazilian Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station based on measurements of aldehydes, particulate matter and fungi conducted during the Antarctic summer in 2012. The sampling site was divided in conditioned (personnel living quarters) and unconditioned (service and utilities areas) compartments and outdoor sites. A field log book was used to record the activities in the station. Furniture and plywood coverings may have contributed to high average concentrations of formaldehyde. Cooking resulted in high average levels of acrolein and fine particles in most of the monitored environments. Other activities such as cleaning, use of personal and cosmetic products, waste incineration, building maintenance and movement of people and vehicles have also contributed to particles concentration increase. Dominance of the species Aspergillus versicolor and Penicillium sp. showed potential means of fungal proliferation. A novel method for the preparation of N-chloroaldimines from commonly available aromatic aldehydes has been developed. The reaction proceeded effectively by two steps: aldehydes were initially transformed into imines and then chloro-substitution with NaClO2 gave the N-chloroaldimines. This simple protocol allows for the preparation of a variety of aromatic N-chloroaldimines in moderate to excellent yields without the isolation of the imine intermediate. Two novel donor-π-acceptor-type dithienylethene derivatives, in which the triphenylamine group acts as electron donor and the formyl group functions as electron acceptor, have been developed. Their structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS (ESI). Investigation of their photochromic properties indicated that they had good photochromic behaviour and excellent fatigue resistance on irradiation with UV or visible light. DFT calculations further validated these experimental results for photochromic behaviour. A straightforward method for synthesising symmetrical and non-symmetrical 3,4-diaryl-substituted pyrroles is proposed, consisting of (i) the condensation reaction between phenylacetonitriles and aldehydes to give acrylonitriles, (ii) the conjugate addition of cyanide to afford succinonitriles, and (iii) reduction of the succinonitriles with DIBAL-H to provide the target pyrroles in good overall yields. The heterogeneous annulation between 2-aminopyridines and propiolaldehydes was achieved in CH2Cl2 at 25 °C in the presence of 3 mol% of MCM-41-immobilised phosphine gold(I) complex (MCM-41-PPh3-AuCl) and AgSbF6 under air, yielding a variety of 3-acylimidazo[1,2- a] pyridines in good yields. This heterogeneous gold(I) catalyst can be easily prepared by a simple procedure, recovered by filtration of the reaction solution and recycled up to seven times without significant loss of activity. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde, a derivative of catechol and an agent with an extensive pharmacological and biological activities, was used to modify collagen and prepared hydrogels. The aldehyde group of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde interacted with the ɛ-amino group of collagen, and then the catechol group of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde was oxidized and self-polymerized. The chemical network formed due to the cross-linking bridges of polymerized catechol groups among collagen molecules, resulting in the transformation from solution to hydrogel. The results of the Fourier-transform infrared measurement indicated that the triple helix structure of collagen was integrated after cross-linking. The appearance of hydrogels changed from golden to dark brown with the increasing 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde dose. When the weight ratio of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and collagen increased from 0 to 2:1, the thermal denaturation temperature of collagen increased from 40.2 to 77.6℃ while the elastic modulus of collagen increased from 13.6 to 1061.4 Pa. The addition of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde also caused more compact morphologies and a dramatic enhancement in the enzymatic resistance of hydrogels. Moreover, the results of cell proliferation assay demonstrated the favorable biocompatibility of collagen hydrogels with 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde. The effects of pMDI and nanoclay on physical and mechanical properties of particleboards bonded with a urea-glyoxal (UG) resin were compared. pMDI (4, 6 and 8%) and nanoclay (1, 2 and 3%) were added to the synthesised UG resin. The properties of the resins prepared as well as of the particleboard panels bonded with them were then measured. The gel time shortened and the viscosity increased by addition of both pMDI and nanoclay into a UG resin. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) showed that the addition of pMDI decreased the onset, curing and peak temperatures of the UG resin. Nanoclay instead, only decreased the peak temperature of the UG resin. The particleboards bonded with UG resins/isocyanate yielded lower water absorption and percentage thickness swelling when compared to those bonded with the UG resin/nanoclay and the control UG resins. The mechanical properties of the particleboards bonded with UG resins could be significantly improved by the addition of increasing percentages of nanoclay and pMDI. The panels where pMDI was added to the UG resin presented higher flexural modulus, flexural strength and IB strength compared to those bonded with UG resins containing nanoclay. A simple, straightforward and efficient method is described for the synthesis of 5-aryl-1H-indeno[2',1':5,6]pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine- 2,4,6(3H)-trione via one-pot multicomponent reaction of indane-1,3-dione, arylaldehydes and 6-aminopyrimidin-2,4(1H,3H)-dione in presence of catalytic amount of graphene oxide in water. A diastereo- and enantioselective base-catalysed aldol reaction of t-butyl isocyanoacetate with aldehydes under phase-transfer catalytic conditions yielded 19 4,5-disubstituted oxazolines, 16 of which are novel. Key to success was the use of a free 9-OH-containing cinchona alkaloid-based quaternary ammonium salt bearing bulky and electron-withdrawing aryl groups on the N-benzyl moiety. An efficient and green method for the synthesis of 1H-pyrazolo[1,2-b]phthalazine-5,10-dione derivatives has been achieved through the one-pot, three-component condensation of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate, and phthalhydrazide in the presence of 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hydroxide ([bmim]OH) as catalyst in EtOH. HAp(hydroxyapatite)-encapsulated-γ-Fe2O3 supported sulfonic acid nanoparticles were used for the preparation of two series of 2-thioxopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines. In the first series, 2-thioxopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines were synthesised from 3-(6-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxo-2-thioxopyrimidin-5-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile and arylaldehydes in the presence of [γ-Fe2O3@HAp-SO3H] as a nanocatalyst, in high yields (84-96%). The Mannich reaction of lawsone with various aldehydes and 4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine gave unexpected 3,3'-(arylmethylene)bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione) derivatives. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social and communication impairments as well as by restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. Genomic studies have not revealed dominant genetic errors common to all forms of ASD. So ASD is assumed to be a complex disorder due to mutations in hundreds of common variants. Other theories argue that spontaneous DNA mutations and/or environmental factors contribute to as much as 50% of ASD. In reviewing potential genetic linkages between autism and alcoholism, it became apparent that all theories of ASD are consistent with aldehyde toxicity, in which endogenous and exogenous aldehydes accumulate as a consequence of mutations in key enzymes. Aldehyde toxicity is characterized by cell-localized, micronutrient deficiencies in sulfur-containing antioxidants, thiamine (B1), pyridoxine (B6), folate, Zn2+, possibly Mg2+, and retinoic acid, causing oxidative stress and a cascade of metabolic disturbances. Aldehydes also react with selective cytosolic and membrane proteins in the cell of origin; then some types migrate to damage neighboring cells. Reactive aldehydes also form adducts with DNA, selectively mutating bases and inducing strand breakage. This article reviews the relevant genomic, biochemical, and nutritional literature, which supports the central hypothesis that most ASD symptoms are consistent with symptoms of aldehyde toxicity. The hypothesis represents a paradigm shift in thinking and has profound implications for clinical detection, treatment, and even prevention of ASD. Insight is offered as to which neurologically afflicted children might successfully be treated with micronutrients and which children are unlikely to be helped. There has been an increasing use of oriented strand boards (OSBs) for the construction of floors, ceilings and walls of buildings. In Germany and other European countries, OSBs are mainly produced from pine wood (Pinus sylvestris). In response to complaints about the odour and irritation of mucous membranes in connection with the use of OSBs, samples of OSBs were bought from do-it-yourself stores to test their volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by using emission test chambers. The boards emitted predominantly monoterpenes, aldehydes, acids and acetone. Aldehydes are generated during the production process by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid. Pine wood, compared with other wood species, contains more unsaturated fatty acids. Of the six acquired OSBs, four boards from three manufacturers would not meet the requirements of the German AgBB (Ausschuss zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten, Committee for Health Evaluation of Building Products), mainly because of the emissions of unsaturated aldehydes. These compounds have low LCI values (lowest concentration of interest) and are therefore problematic substances based on a health-related evaluation of building products according to the AgBB scheme. (Z,E)-9,11,13-Tetradecatrienal is a sex pheromone component emitted by virgin females of the Carob Moth Apomyelois ceratoniae Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) which is an important pest of Iranian pomegranate fruits. Chemical control of this pest is not possible and biological methods with pheromones are used. The synthesis of the major component of the sex pheromone was achieved in fewer steps and with lower cost than previously.
