Douglas M. MacDowell (1931–2010) was a scholar of international renown and the articles included here cover a significant area of classical scholarship, discussing Athenian law, law-making and legal procedure, Old Comedy, comedy and law, politics and lexicography. All of these articles, published between 1959 and 2010, bear the characteristic marks of his scholarship: precision, balanced judgement, brevity and deep learning; they are rational and sober accounts of complicated and controversial issues. Many of these essays are virtually inaccessible as they were originally published in celebratory volumes or article collections which are now out of print or difficult to find outside major libraries. This collection of MacDowell's articles will make these works available to a broad scholarly audience, and make it easier to bring this scholarship to the classroom as part of courses in Classics, ancient history, legal history and theatre studies. The volume includes a biography of MacDowell by Christopher Carey, based on the testimony of his closest colleagues and personal friends, which was presented to the British Academy.

Equality Dancesport uses a queer feminist lens to examine the materialisation of gender and sexuality through moving and dancing bodies, by taking readers through the initiation journey of becoming an equality dancesport competitor. A recent shift in the media representation of ballroom dancing on British televised entertainment shows such as Strictly Come Dancing inspired active media discourse around same- sex dance partnerships. Questions arise as to whether and how such partnerships should be screened on television, and the extent to which gender and sexual norms around traditional ballroom dancing should be maintained in its representation. This monograph provides an analysis and contextualization of an extraordinarily successful book, the History of the Great Kingdom of China (Rome 1585), by the Spanish Augustinian friar Juan González de Mendoza (1545–1618). Within a few years, this book had reached 30 editions and had been translated into several languages, including English. Mendoza's chronicle shaped the late Renaissance interpretation of China across Europe. It had its origin in an embassy to emperor Wanli of China sent by Philip II, ruler of the Spanish and Portuguese overseas empires in America and Asia. This book examines the many functions of paper in the fine art and aesthetics of the early twentieth-century modernist or historic avant-garde (Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism and many more).With its many collages and photomontages, the historic avant-garde is generally considered to have transformed paper from a mere support into an artistic medium and to have assisted in art on paper gaining a firm autonomy. Bringing together an international team of scholars, this book shows that the story of paper in the avant-garde has thereby hardly been told. The first section looks at a selection of canonized individual avant-gardists'work on paper to demonstrate that the material and formal analysis of paper in the avant-garde's artistic production still holds much in store. In the second section, chapters zoom in on forms and formats of collective artistic production that deployed paper to move around reproductions of fine art works, to facilitate the dialogue between avant-gardists, to better promote their work among patrons, and to make their work available to a wider audience. Chapters in the third section lay bare how certain groups within the avant-garde began to massively create monochrome works, because these could be easily reproduced when transferred to, or reproduced as, linocuts. In the last section of the book, chapters explore how the avant-garde's attentiveness to paper almost always also implied a critique of the ways in which paper, and all that it stood for, was treated and labored in European culture and society more broadly.The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, modernism, and design.

This volume makes an important contribution to the understanding of translation theory and practice in the Early Modern period, focusing on the translation of knowledge, literature and travel writing, and examining discussions about the role of women and office of interpreter.Over the course of the Early Modern period, there was a dramatic shift in the way that translation was conceptualised, a change that would have repercussions far beyond the world of letters. At the beginning of the period, translation was largely indistinguishable from other textual operations such as exegesis, glossing, paraphrase, commentary, or compilation, and theorists did not yet think in terms of the binaries that would come to characterise modern translation theory. Just how and when this shift occurred in actual translation practice is one of the topics explored in this volume through a series of case studies offering snapshots of translational activity in different times and places. Overall, the picture that emerges is of a translational practice that is still very flexible, as source texts are creatively appropriated for new purposes, whether pragmatic, pedagogical, or diversional, across a range of genres, from science and philosophy to literature, travel writing and language teaching. This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. This book is the first to use a multidisciplinary approach to study the Knights'Templars of Bologna, Italy. Archaeological, scientific, historical and archival sources are combined to consider the Templars in the context of Bologna's growing economic and political power during this period. A complete picture of urban and suburban Templar properties in Bologna is provided, detailing lucrative activities such as Templar land use, agricultural innovations and wine production. Because the Crusades were influential in this era and directly impacted the urbanization of the city, the Bolognese Templars are also studied in relation to the five other military orders in Bologna, including the understudied Crucifers and Knights of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Many formerly unexplored historical and archival sources are integrated with scientific data from this project's archaeological excavations and architectural surveys of the Templar House in Bologna, allowing for its precise dating and the development of an architecturally accurate 3D film reconstruction of this property. Particular attention is also given to the Order's rise and fall under the ecclesiastical governance of the archbishops of Ravenna, as well as the Templar trial conducted by Archbishop Rinaldo da Concorezzo. In addition, the biography of the famous Templar brother Peter of Bologna is explored, due to his considerable impact on the events of the Templar trial of 1310. While many Freemasons believe Peter of Bologna escaped from the Paris trial and went to Scotland in 1313, bringing information crucial to that organization's founding, the research included here suggests that Peter returned to Bologna instead, serving as a Hospitaller until his death in the city in 1329.This book therefore suggests alternative conclusions regarding Peter of Bologna's death and legacy, based on the latest available interdisciplinary research.

A series of historical revolutions has largely tamed this scarcity in ways few could have imagined. These revolutions, however, have generated new, potentially catastrophic challenges for the world – the problems of plenty.In this Adelphi book, Francis J. Gavin argues that the institutions, practices, theories and policies that helped explain and largely tamed scarcity by generating massive prosperity, and which were sometimes used to justify punishing conquest, are often unsuitable for addressing the problems of plenty.
