Objective We analyzed application and match rates for pain medicine training in the United States and hypothesized that there would be (1) greater growth in the number of training positions than applicants, (2) higher match rates among US allopathic graduates relative to non-US allopathic graduates, and (3) greater number of unfilled training positions over time. Design Retrospective, cross-sectional study of all applicants for pain medicine training in the United States. Method National Resident Matching Program data were obtained over a ten-year period (2014-2023). Match rates and applicant-to-position ratios were calculated and compared over time with linear regression. Comparisons were made with chi-square tests. Results Growth in the number of annual training positions (261-377, 44% increase) exceeded growth in the number of interested applicants (398-415, 4% increase) (P  < .001). Annual applicant-to-training position ratios decreased (1.5-1.1, P  < .001). The representation of US allopathic graduates among incoming pain medicine fellows decreased over the study period (73%-58%, P  < .001) while US osteopathic graduates increased (9%-28%, P  < .001). Match rates increased for both US allopathic graduates (71%-91%, P  < .001) and non-US allopathic graduates (51%-81%, P  < .001). From 2018 to 2023, US allopathic graduates (79%) had higher match rates than US osteopathic graduates (60%, P  < .001) and international medical graduates (57%, P  < .001). More available annual training positions went unfilled over the study period (2%-5%, P  = .006). Conclusions Stagnant annual applicant volume and increasing number of available training positions have led to increasing match rates for pain medicine fellowship training. Background Recent studies have suggested that Kaposi sarcoma (KS) rates might be increasing in some racial/ethnic groups, age groups, and US regions. We estimated recent US trends in KS incidence among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PLWH). Methods Incident KS patients aged 20–59 years were obtained from 36 cancer registries and assumed to be living with HIV. The number of PLWH was obtained from national HIV surveillance data from 2008 to 2016. Age-standardized KS rates and annual percent changes (APCs) in rates were estimated by age, sex, race/ethnicity, state, and region. Results Between 2008 and 2016, the age-adjusted KS rate among PLWH was 116/100 000. Rates were higher among males, in younger age groups, and among white PLWH. Washington, Maine, and California had the highest KS rates among PLWH. KS rates among PLWH decreased significantly (average APC = −3.2% per year, P  < .001) from 136/100 000 to 97/100 000 between 2008 and 2016. There were no statistically significant increases in KS rates in any age, sex, or racial/ethnic group or in any geographic region or state. However, there were nondecreasing trends in some states and in younger age groups, primarily among black PLWH. Conclusions KS incidence rates among PLWH have decreased nationally between 2008 and 2016. Though there were no statistically significant increases in KS rates in any demographic or geographic group, nondecreasing/stagnant KS trends in some states and among younger and black PLWH highlight the need for early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection. We empirically assess the dynamic linkages among sovereign bond yield spreads (both short- and long-term) and monetary policy rates/spreads during the Eurozone's sovereign and banking crises in the post-2008 period when unconventional monetary policy replaced conventional policy. Our focus is on two subperiods, the crisis period (30 November 2009 to 25 July 2012) and the tranquil period (26 July 2012 to 30 April 2014). For the first subperiod, we noted significant spillovers from the overnight interest spreads spread to almost all sovereign bond yield spreads, at both the mean and volatility levels. Thus, during that period expectations on monetary surprises led bond spreads and their corresponding volatilities compared to the tranquil period, regardless of the bond yields maturities. Overall, we infer that monetary policy and sovereign risk were highly linked during the crisis period and thus, the interest-rate monetary policy transmission mechanism was effective in reducing these yield spreads. Long-term nominal interest rates are surprisingly sensitive to high-frequency (daily or monthly) movements in short-term rates. Since 2000, this high-frequency sensitivity has grown even stronger in U.S. data. By contrast, the association between low-frequency changes (at 6- or 12-month horizons) in long- and short-term rates, which was also strong before 2000, has weakened substantially. This puzzling post-2000 pattern arises because increases in short rates temporarily raise the term premium component of long-term yields, leading long rates to temporarily overreact to changes in short rates. The frequency-dependent excess sensitivity of long-term rates that we observe in recent years is best understood using a model in which (i) declines in short rates trigger "rate-amplifying" shifts in investor demand for long-term bonds, and (ii) the arbitrage response to these demand shifts is both limited and slow. We study, theoretically and empirically, how such rate-amplifying demand can be traced to mortgage-refinancing activity, investors who extrapolate recent changes in short rates, and investors who "reach for yield" when short rates fall. Mutation rate estimates for vegetatively reproducing organisms are rare, despite their frequent occurrence across the tree of life. Here we report mutation rate estimates in two vegetatively reproducing duckweed species, Lemna minor and Spirodela polyrhiza. We use a modified approach to estimating mutation rates by taking into account the reduction in mutation detection power that occurs when new individuals are produced from multiple cell lineages. We estimate an extremely low per generation mutation rate in both species of duckweed and note that allelic coverage at de novo mutation sites is very skewed. We also find no substantial difference in mutation rate between mutation accumulation lines propagated under benign conditions and those grown under salt stress. Recent observations have uncovered a correlation between the accretion rates (measured from the UV continuum excess) of protoplanetary discs and their masses inferred from observations of the submm continuum. While viscous evolution models predict such a correlation, the predicted values are in tension with data obtained from the Lupus and Upper Scorpius star-forming regions; for example, they underpredict the scatter in accretion rates, particularly in older regions. Here, we argue that since the submm observations trace the discs' dust, by explicitly modelling the dust grain growth, evolution, and emission, we can better understand the correlation. We show that for turbulent viscosities with α ≲ 10−3, the depletion of dust from the disc due to radial drift means we can reproduce the range of masses and accretion rates seen in the Lupus and Upper Sco data sets. One consequence of this model is that the upper locus of accretion rates at a given dust mass does not evolve with the age of the region. Moreover, we find that internal photoevaporation is necessary to produce the lowest accretion rates observed. In order to replicate the correct dust masses at the time of disc dispersal, we favour relatively low photoevaporation rates ≲ 10−9 M⊙ yr−1 for most sources but cannot discriminate between EUV or X-ray-driven winds. A limited number of sources, particularly in Lupus, are shown to have higher masses than predicted by our models which may be evidence for variations in the properties of the dust or dust trapping induced in substructures. Theories predict that directional selection during adaptation to a novel habitat results in elevated meiotic recombination rate. Yet the lack of population-level recombination rate data leaves this hypothesis untested in natural populations. Here, we examine the population-level recombination rate variation in two incipient ecological species, the microcrustacean Daphnia pulex (an ephemeral-pond species) and Daphnia pulicaria (a permanent-lake species). The divergence of D. pulicaria from D. pulex involved habitat shifts from pond to lake habitats as well as strong local adaptation due to directional selection. Using a novel single-sperm genotyping approach, we estimated the male-specific recombination rate of two linkage groups in multiple populations of each species in common garden experiments and identified a significantly elevated recombination rate in D. pulicaria. Most importantly, population genetic analyses show that the divergence in recombination rate between these two species is most likely due to divergent selection in distinct ecological habitats rather than neutral evolution. A growing body of evidence suggests that mutation rates exhibit intra-species specific variation. We estimated genome-wide loss of heterozygosity (LOH), gross chromosomal changes, and single nucleotide mutation rates to determine intra-species specific differences in hybrid and homozygous strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The mutation accumulation lines of the S. cerevisiae hybrid backgrounds - S288c/YJM789 (S/Y) and S288c/RM11-1a (S/R) were analyzed along with the homozygous diploids RM11, S288c, and YJM145. LOH was extensive in both S/Y and S/R hybrid backgrounds. The S/Y background also showed longer LOH tracts, gross chromosomal changes, and aneuploidy. Short copy number aberrations were observed in the S/R background. LOH data from the S/Y and S/R hybrids were used to construct a LOH map for S288c to identify hotspots. Further, we observe up to a sixfold difference in single nucleotide mutation rates among the S. cerevisiae S/Y and S/R genetic backgrounds. Our results demonstrate LOH is common during mitotic divisions in S. cerevisiae hybrids and also highlight genome-wide differences in LOH patterns and rates of single nucleotide mutations between commonly used S. cerevisiae hybrid genetic backgrounds. Structural change at both farmer and cooperative levels has significantly altered the vertical relationships between these, with increased switching activities resulting in negative economic impacts on cooperatives. This paper uses spatial panel modelling to identify how prices, cooperative member density and competitors' processing volume affect member switching rates in a large dairy cooperative. With a unique data set, we find that these local indicators influence local members' switching decisions. Furthermore, the detected pattern indicates a spatial interdependence of local switching rates, hinting at potential interaction processes among the members, ultimately influencing the occurrence of switching decisions in the membership base. Background Successful management of pediatric low-grade glioma (pLGG) can be complicated by eloquent anatomical location, as well as specific pathologic and molecular features. Some authors have proposed using the VEGF inhibitor bevacizumab to improve disease control, but its safety and efficacy are poorly defined. Correspondingly, our aim was to pool systematically identified clinical data in the literature to assess the clinical utility of bevacizumab for pLGG at progression. Methods A systematic search of 7 electronic databases from inception to June 2019 was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Articles were screened against prespecified criteria. Outcomes were then pooled by random-effects meta-analyses of proportions. Results Seven pertinent studies described the outcomes of 110 progressive pLGG patients managed with bevacizumab in largely multiagent regimens. While on treatment, the rate of clinical response was 58% (95% CI, 43%-72%), and the rate of response on imaging was 80% (95% CI, 58%-96%). The rate of grade 3 or higher toxicity was 8% (95% CI, 2%-17%), with proteinuria the most commonly described. In the off-treatment period up to median 1 year, the rate of progression was estimated to be 51% (95% CI, 28%-74%). Conclusions Bevacizumab has the potential to control clinical and radiographic disease with relatively low grade 3 or higher toxicity risk in progressive pLGG patients. However, the long-term off-treatment benefits of this therapy are not yet well defined. As species richness varies along the tree of life, there is a great interest in identifying factors that affect the rates by which lineages speciate or go extinct. To this end, theoretical biologists have developed a suite of phylogenetic comparative methods that aim to identify where shifts in diversification rates had occurred along a phylogeny and whether they are associated with some traits. Using these methods, numerous studies have predicted that speciation and extinction rates vary across the tree of life. In this study, we show that asymmetric rates of sequence evolution lead to systematic biases in the inferred phylogeny, which in turn lead to erroneous inferences regarding lineage diversification patterns. The results demonstrate that as the asymmetry in sequence evolution rates increases, so does the tendency to select more complicated models that include the possibility of diversification rate shifts. These results thus suggest that any inference regarding shifts in diversification pattern should be treated with great caution, at least until any biases regarding the molecular substitution rate have been ruled out. Metabolism is linked with the pace‐of‐life, co‐varying with survival, growth, and reproduction. Metabolic rates should therefore be under strong selection and, if heritable, become less variable over time. Yet intraspecific variation in metabolic rates is ubiquitous, even after accounting for body mass and temperature. Theory predicts variable selection maintains trait variation, but field estimates of how selection on metabolism varies are rare. We use a model marine invertebrate to estimate selection on metabolic rates in the wild under different competitive environments. Fitness landscapes varied among environments separated by a few centimeters: interspecific competition selected for higher metabolism, and a faster pace‐of‐life, relative to competition‐free environments. Populations experience a mosaic of competitive regimes; we find metabolism mediates a competition‐colonization trade‐off across these regimes. Although high metabolic phenotypes possess greater competitive ability, in the absence of competitors, low metabolic phenotypes are better colonizers. Spatial heterogeneity and the variable selection on metabolic rates that it generates is likely to maintain variation in metabolic rate, despite strong selection in any single environment. Migration is a process with important implications for the genetic structure of populations. However, there is an aspect of migration seldom investigated in plants: migration between temporally isolated groups of individuals within the same geographic population. The genetic implications of temporal migration can be particularly relevant for semelparous organisms, which are those that reproduce only once in a lifetime after a certain period of growth. In this case, reproductive asynchrony in individuals of the same population generates demes of individuals differing in their developmental stage (non-reproductive and reproductive). These demes are connected by temporal migrants, that is, individuals that become annually asynchronous with respect to the rest of individuals of their same deme. Here, we investigated the extent of temporal migration and its effects on temporal genetic structure in the biennial plant Erysimum mediohispanicum. To this end, we conducted two independent complementary approaches. First, we empirically estimated temporal migration rates and temporal genetic structure in four populations of E. mediohispanicum during three consecutive years using nuclear microsatellites markers. Second, we developed a demographic genetic simulation model to assess genetic structure for different migration scenarios differing in temporal migration rates and their occurrence probabilities. We hypothesized that genetic structure decreased with increasing temporal migration rates due to the homogenizing effect of migration. Empirical and modelling results were consistent and indicated a U-shape relationship between genetic structure and temporal migration rates. Overall, they indicated the existence of temporal genetic structure and that such genetic structure indeed decreased with increasing temporal migration rates. However, genetic structure increased again at high temporal migration rates. The results shed light into the effects of reproductive asynchrony on important population genetic parameters. Rate variation adds considerable complexity to divergence time estimation in molecular phylogenies. Here, we evaluate the impact of lineage-specific rates —which we define as among-branch-rate-variation that acts consistently across the entire genome. We compare its impact to residual rates —defined as among-branch-rate-variation that shows a different pattern of rate variation at each sampled locus, and gene-specific rates —defined as variation in the average rate across all branches at each sampled locus. We show that lineage-specific rates lead to erroneous divergence time estimates, regardless of how many loci are sampled. Further, we show that stronger lineage-specific rates lead to increasing error. This contrasts to residual rates and gene-specific rates, where sampling more loci significantly reduces error. If divergence times are inferred in a Bayesian framework, we highlight that error caused by lineage-specific rates significantly reduces the probability that the 95% highest posterior density includes the correct value, and leads to sensitivity to the prior. Use of a more complex rate prior—which has recently been proposed to model rate variation more accurately—does not affect these conclusions. Finally, we show that the scale of lineage-specific rates used in our simulation experiments is comparable to that of an empirical data set for the angiosperm genus Ipomoea. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that lineage-specific rates cause error in divergence time estimates, and that this error is not overcome by analyzing genomic scale multilocus data sets. Do web surveys still yield lower response rates compared with other survey modes? To answer this question, we replicated and extended a meta-analysis done in 2008 which found that, based on 45 experimental comparisons, web surveys had an 11 percentage points lower response rate compared with other survey modes. Fundamental changes in internet accessibility and use since the publication of the original meta-analysis would suggest that people's propensity to participate in web surveys has changed considerably in the meantime. However, in our replication and extension study, which comprised 114 experimental comparisons between web and other survey modes, we found almost no change: web surveys still yielded lower response rates than other modes (a difference of 12 percentage points in response rates). Furthermore, we found that prenotifications, the sample recruitment strategy, the survey's solicitation mode, the type of target population, the number of contact attempts, and the country in which the survey was conducted moderated the magnitude of the response rate differences. Dispersal and fecundity are two fundamental traits underlying the spread of populations. Using integral difference equation models, we examine how individual variation in these fundamental traits and the heritability of these traits influence rates of spatial spread of populations along a one-dimensional transect. Using a mixture of analytic and numerical methods, we show that individual variation in dispersal rates increases spread rates and the more heritable this variation, the greater the increase. In contrast, individual variation in lifetime fecundity only increases spread rates when some of this variation is heritable. The highest increases in spread rates occur when variation in dispersal positively co-varies with fecundity. Our results highlight the importance of estimating individual variation in dispersal rates, dispersal syndromes in which fecundity and dispersal co-vary positively and heritability of these traits to predict population rates of spatial spread. This paper presents experimental results of dynamic breakdown voltage and delay response as functions of gamma ray air kerma rate for xenon-filled tube at 2.7 mbar pressure. Gamma ray air kerma rate range was considered from 123 nGy h–1 up to 12.3 mGy h–1 in order to investigate the possibility of the application of this tube in gamma radiation dosimetry. It was shown that the variations of the above-mentioned parameters are considerable up to the dose rate of 1.23 μGy h–1, which points to the possibility for application in small dose rate gamma ray dosimetry. Molecular phylogenies are a key source of information about the tempo and mode of species diversification. However, most empirical phylogenies do not contain representatives of all species, such that diversification rates are typically estimated from incompletely sampled data. Most researchers recognize that incomplete sampling can lead to biased rate estimates, but the statistical properties of methods for accommodating incomplete sampling remain poorly known. In this point of view, we demonstrate theoretical concerns with the widespread use of analytical sampling corrections for sparsely sampled phylogenies of higher taxonomic groups. In particular, corrections based on "sampling fractions" can lead to low statistical power to infer rate variation when it is present, depending on the likelihood function used for inference. In the extreme, the sampling fraction correction can lead to spurious patterns of diversification that are driven solely by unbalanced sampling across the tree in concert with low overall power to infer shifts. Stochastic polytomy resolution provides an alternative to sampling fraction approaches that avoids some of these biases. We show that stochastic polytomy resolvers can greatly improve the power of common analyses to estimate shifts in diversification rates. We introduce a new stochastic polytomy resolution method (Taxonomic Addition for Complete Trees [TACT]) that uses birth–death-sampling estimators across an ultrametric phylogeny to estimate branching times for unsampled taxa, with taxonomic information to compatibly place new taxa onto a backbone phylogeny. We close with practical recommendations for diversification inference under several common scenarios of incomplete sampling. Understanding how and why rates of character evolution vary across the Tree of Life is central to many evolutionary questions; for example, does the trophic apparatus (a set of continuous characters) evolve at a higher rate in fish lineages that dwell in reef versus nonreef habitats (a discrete character)? Existing approaches for inferring the relationship between a discrete character and rates of continuous-character evolution rely on comparing a null model (in which rates of continuous-character evolution are constant across lineages) to an alternative model (in which rates of continuous-character evolution depend on the state of the discrete character under consideration). However, these approaches are susceptible to a "straw-man" effect: the influence of the discrete character is inflated because the null model is extremely unrealistic. Here, we describe MuSSCRat , a Bayesian approach for inferring the impact of a discrete trait on rates of continuous-character evolution in the presence of alternative sources of rate variation ("background-rate variation"). We demonstrate by simulation that our method is able to reliably infer the degree of state-dependent rate variation, and show that ignoring background-rate variation leads to biased inferences regarding the degree of state-dependent rate variation in grunts (the fish group Haemulidae). Gamma-ray dose rates have been measured in the indoor and outdoor air of Hassan City. The measurements were done from 25 locations of Hassan City at 1 m above the ground surface for radiometric, geophysical and environmental surveys using a lightweight portable radiation survey meter (scintillometer). The meter reading fluctuates around a mean value and is proportional to the count rate detected by the unit. This is because of the random nature of radioactivity. In the present study, the absorbed gamma dose rates in indoor and outdoor air varies from 69 ± 2 to 481 ± 18 nGy h−1 with a geometric mean of 180 ± 6 nGy h−1 and 20 ± 0 to 371 ± 14 nGy h−1 with a geometric mean of 107 ± 3 nGy h−1. The annual effective gamma dose rates in indoor and outdoor air varies from 0.34 to 2.36 mSv y−1 with a geometric mean of 0.88 mSv y−1 and 0.02 to 0.45 mSv y−1 with a geometric mean of 0.12 mSv y−1. Although the links between species richness and diversification rates with clade age have been studied extensively, few studies have investigated the relationship between the rates of trait evolution and clade age. The rate of morphological trait evolution has repeatedly been shown to vary through time, as expected, for example, for adaptive radiations, but the strength and sources of this variation are not well understood. We compare the relationship between the rates of trait evolution and clade age across eight monophyletic clades of passerine birds by investigating ecomorphological traits, i.e. morphological traits that influence the ecology of the species directly. We study the ecomorphological divergence pattern using analyses of the disparity through time and determine the best-fitting model of evolution for each trait in each clade. We find no support for a consistent dependence of evolutionary rates on clade age across wing, tail, tarsus and beak shape in our eight clades and also show that early burst models of trait evolution are rarely the best-fitting models within these clades. These results suggest that key innovations or adaptive radiations might be less common evolutionary patterns and processes than generally thought or might depend on the taxonomic level investigated. Taking the potential instability of the Kaleckian model of growth as his starting point, M. Setterfield ('Long-run variation in capacity utilisation in the presence of a fixed normal rate', Cambridge Journal of Economics , 2018, doi:10.1093/cje/bey016) investigates, inter alia , the possibility of taming Harrodian instability. His investigation uses a range of tolerable values, rather than a unique value, for the normal rate of capacity utilisation. After illustrating his point theoretically, Setterfield then proposes empirical methods to estimate the normal capacity utilisation rate and the corresponding tolerance range. This paper suggests improved methods to estimate the normal rate of capacity utilisation and its tolerance range. The proposed alternative solutions offer better consistency with post-Keynesian behavioural theories, and the presented exploratory narrative based on these suggestions can partly explain the current stagnation. Gray seals were historically distributed along the northeastern coast of the United States, but bounties and lack of protection reduced numbers and they were rarely observed for most of the 20th century. Once protections were enacted, the population started to rebound. Here, we describe the recolonization and recovery of gray seals in the United States, focusing on the re-establishment of pupping sites. We fit individual generalized linear models to various time series (1988–2019) to estimate rates of increase in observed pup counts at four of the more data-rich sites. Annual rate of increase at individual sites ranged from −0.2% (95% CI : −2.3–1.9%) to 26.3% (95% CI : 21.6–31.4%). The increase in sites and number of pups born in the United States is driven by population growth and immigration from Canadian colonies and is part of a larger recovery of the Northwest Atlantic population. Wildlife protection, a healthy source population, habitat availability, and species traits that allow for dispersal and high productivity were all important factors in this recovery. This article reports on a randomized field experiment in which potential work migrants from Nepal to Malaysia and the Persian Gulf countries are provided with information on wages and mortality incidences at their intended destinations. It is found that, particularly for the group of potential migrants without prior foreign migration experience, the information changes their expectations of earnings and mortality risks abroad, which further changes their actual migration decisions. Using the exogenous variation in expectations, it is estimated that the elasticity of migration with respect to mortality rate expectation is 0.8, and the elasticity of migration with respect to earnings expectation is 1.1. The rate of meiotic recombination is one of the central factors determining genome-wide levels of linkage disequilibrium which has important consequences for the efficiency of natural selection and for the dissection of quantitative traits. Here we present a new, high-resolution linkage map for Populus tremula that we use to anchor approximately two thirds of the P. tremula draft genome assembly on to the expected 19 chromosomes, providing us with the first chromosome-scale assembly for P. tremula (Table 2). We then use this resource to estimate variation in recombination rates across the P. tremula genome and compare these results to recombination rates based on linkage disequilibrium in a large number of unrelated individuals. We also assess how variation in recombination rates is associated with a number of genomic features, such as gene density, repeat density and methylation levels. We find that recombination rates obtained from the two methods largely agree, although the LD-based method identifies a number of genomic regions with very high recombination rates that the map-based method fails to detect. Linkage map and LD-based estimates of recombination rates are positively correlated and show similar correlations with other genomic features, showing that both methods can accurately infer recombination rate variation across the genome. Recombination rates are positively correlated with gene density and negatively correlated with repeat density and methylation levels, suggesting that recombination is largely directed toward gene regions in P. tremula. Background: Clinical and functional recovery is usually achieved after treatment for a first episode of psychosis (FEP). Unfortunately, subsequent relapse remains common, occurring within a year for approximately 30% of individuals and up to 80% over 5 years. Factors that make relapse more likely in any given individual remain poorly understood. Methods: This article presents a naturalistic cohort study of young people (15-24 years old) accessing an early intervention in psychosis service in Melbourne, Australia between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2016. Demographic and clinical predictors of relapse were collected and analyzed using Cox regression analysis. Results: A total of 1220 young people presented with an FEP during the study period; 37.7% (N = 460) experienced at least 1 relapse during their episode of care. Over half of all relapses resulted in an admission to hospital. Non-adherence to medication, substance use, and psychosocial stressors were commonly noted as clinical precipitants of relapse. Significant predictors of relapse (vs no relapse) were a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.62) or affective psychotic disorder (aHR = 1.37), lifetime amphetamine use (aHR = 1.48), and any substance use during treatment (aHR = 1.63). Conclusion: These findings suggest that relapse occurs frequently for young people who have experienced FEP. This is one of the first studies to report that amphetamine use (predominantly illicit methamphetamine) increases the risk of relapse. This article analyses an explicit temporal splitting numerical scheme for the stochastic Allen–Cahn equation driven by additive noise in a bounded spatial domain with smooth boundary in dimension |$d\leqslant 3$|⁠. The splitting strategy is combined with an exponential Euler scheme of an auxiliary problem. When |$d=1$| and the driving noise is a space–time white noise we first show some a priori estimates of this splitting scheme. Elevated levels of natural background radiation due to scattered patches of monazite sand around the beaches of Mangalore, India, have been reported earlier. A comparative study of gamma dose rates was performed in both normal background and high natural background radiation areas around Mangalore using different types of portable gamma dosimeters. In addition to this, gamma-ray energy spectra were acquired, in situ , using a NaI(Tl) based portable gamma spectrometer. Soil and sand samples were collected for laboratory analysis with HPGe detectors. Measurements were carried out during the years 2016–18 revealed that in majority of the locations the gamma dose rates were similar to the normal background regions, whereas, in certain locations the dose rates were higher with values up to 530 nSv/h. Background Burden estimates of medically and nonmedically attended influenza-associated illness across syndromes and levels of severity are lacking. Methods We estimated the national burden of medically and nonmedically attended influenza-associated illness among individuals with different clinical presentations (all-respiratory, all-circulatory, and nonrespiratory/noncirculatory) and levels of severity (mild, fatal, and severe, nonfatal) using a combination of case-based (from laboratory-confirmed influenza surveillance) and ecological studies, as well as data from healthcare utilization surveys in South Africa during 2013–2015. In addition, we compared estimates of medically attended influenza-associated respiratory illness, obtained from case-based and ecological studies. Rates were reported per 100 000 individuals in the population. Results The estimated mean annual number of influenza-associated illness episodes was 10 737 847 (19.8% of 54 096 705 inhabitants). Of these episodes, 10 598 138 (98.7%) were mild, 128 173 (1.2%) were severe, nonfatal, and 11 536 (0.1%) were fatal. There were 2 718 140 (25.6%) mild, 56 226 (43.9%) severe, nonfatal, and 4945 (42.8%) medically attended should be after fatal episodes. Influenza-associated respiratory illness accounted for 99.2% (10 576 146) of any mild, 65.5% (83 941) of any severe, nonfatal, and 33.7% (3893) of any fatal illnesses. Ecological and case-based estimates of medically attended, influenza-associated, respiratory mild (rates: ecological, 1778.8, vs case-based, 1703.3; difference, 4.4%), severe, nonfatal (rates: ecological, 88.6, vs case-based, 75.3; difference, 15.0%), and fatal (rates: ecological, 3.8, vs case-based, 3.5; difference, 8.4%) illnesses were similar. Conclusions There was a substantial burden of influenza-associated symptomatic illness, including severe, nonfatal and fatal illnesses, and a large proportion was nonmedically attended. Objective: Determine rate of high plasma normetanephrine or metanephrine (PNM-PMN) in a large sample of patients according to PNM-PMN posture and age-adjusted references. Design: Retrospective re-analysis of PNM-PMN from a Canadian reference laboratory (n = 5452), 2011-2015; most were in seated position (n = 5112) rather than supine (n = 340). An international PPGL database demonstrated expected distribution of supine PNM-PMN in PPGL patients. Methods: All PNM-PMN from a tertiary referral laboratory were reviewed. Any PNM-PMN result greater than 2× upper reference limit (URL) was considered likely true PPGL. Results 1-2× URL were uncertain, requiring additional testing/follow-up despite most being false positive given the r arity of PPGL. The rate of results in the 1-2× URL category were calculated for each group according to collection posture and differing published URL: seated, supine or supine age adjusted. Results: When collected and interpreted by seated URL, 19.6% of PNM req uired additional testing; only 4.6% being >2× URL. For patients over age 50 years, the abnormal rate was 24. 9%. When collected supine, interpreted by supine age-adjusted URL, only 5.3% of PNM were mildly elevated. Possible false positives may be even lower when considering PMN or plasma methoxytyramine which were commonly h igh in true PPGL despite mild PNM elevations. Conclusions: In a general medical population, seated PNM has a high rate of abnormal results, far exceeding expected prevalence. Supine measurement with supine, age-adjusted interpretation is strongly preferred prior to costly or invasive PPGL investigations. The rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) depends sensitively on the stellar properties of the central galactic regions. Simulations show that galaxy mergers cause gas inflows, triggering nuclear starbursts, increasing the central stellar density. Motivated by these numerical results, and by the observed overrepresentation of post-starburst galaxies among TDE hosts, we study the evolution of the TDE rate in high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of a galaxy merger, in which we capture the evolution of the stellar density around the massive black holes (BHs). We apply analytical estimates of the loss-cone theory, using the stellar density profiles from simulations, to estimate the time evolution of the TDE rate. At the second pericentre, a nuclear starburst enhances the stellar density around the BH in the least massive galaxy, leading to an enhancement of the TDE rate around the secondary BH, although the magnitude and the duration of the increase depend on the stochasticity of star formation on very small scales. The central stellar density around the primary BH remains instead fairly constant, and so is its TDE rate. After the formation of the binary, the stellar density decreases, and so does the TDE rate. Aims: Infection can occur via surface touch. A new method was developed to more accurately evaluate the bacterial transfer rate from a finger to a surface. Methods and Results: Staphylococcus aureus was used as the model bacteria to inoculate a thumb. Sequential touches were made between the contaminated thumb and a series of clean microscope slides. The bacteria on the glass surface were cultured in situ, and the bacterial transfer rate was evaluated by fitting the colony‐forming units (CFUs) on glass surfaces with the exponential decay function. The resident microflora on thumb were also used to validate the new method. Conclusions: The average transfer rate was 12·9% for S. aureus under the baseline condition. The CFUs counted on the glass surfaces were well fitted by the exponential decay function. A set of trials with more surfaces resulted in a more accurate evaluation. No statistically significant difference was found in the estimated transfer rate between the standard strain and the resident microflora. Significance and Impact of the Study: The new method significantly increases the accuracy of evaluation of the microbial transfer rate from a finger to a surface while maintaining a low workload. Background Preservation of residual kidney function (RKF) is a relevant objective in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The influence of dietary protein intake (PI) on this variable has not been adequately investigated. Methods Following an observational design, we studied 336 patients incident on PD, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. The main study variable was the mean PI [normalized rate of protein nitrogen appearance (nPNA)] during the first 4 months on PD. The main outcome variables were the absolute rate of decline of RKF and the proportion of patients presenting a >50% decay of their RKF during the first year of follow-up. We applied univariate and multivariate strategies of analysis, taking into consideration the main control variables bearing a correlation with nPNA and/or RKF. Results Mean nPNA (first 4 months) was 1.23 ± 0.33 g/kg/day, while the overall rate of decline of RKF was −0.13 ± 0.29 mL/min/month; 69 patients (25.1%) had lost >50% of their initial RKF by the end of the first year. Univariate analysis disclosed consistent associations between the main study variable on one hand and baseline RKF (r  = 0.32, P < 0.0005) and its rate of decline (r = −0.23, P < 0.0005) on the other. The latter two variables were also significantly correlated (r = −0.36, P < 0.0005). Multivariate analysis identified mean nPNA as an independent predictor of the rate of decline of RKF [odds ratio 1.09 per 0.10 g/kg/day, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.99–1.19, P = 0.058] and, in particular, of the probability of losing >50% of the baseline RKF during the first year of treatment (odds ratio 1.15 per 0.10 g/kg/day, 95% CI 1.04–1.27, P = 0.006). Conclusion Higher rates of PI during the first months of therapy are associated with a faster decline of RKF among patients incident on PD. Our results underline the convenience of keeping an adequate balance between sufficient protein ingestion, to prevent malnutrition and wasting, and sensible restriction in stable, adequately nourished individuals with rates of intake in the higher range or above-recommended allowances. Mutations are the origin of genetic diversity, and the mutation rate is a fundamental parameter to understand all aspects of molecular evolution. The combination of mutation–accumulation experiments and high-throughput sequencing enabled the estimation of mutation rates in most model organisms, but several major eukaryotic lineages remain unexplored. Here, we report the first estimation of the spontaneous mutation rate in a model unicellular eukaryote from the Stramenopile kingdom, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (strain RCC2967). We sequenced 36 mutation accumulation lines for an average of 181 generations per line and identified 156 de novo mutations. The base substitution mutation rate per site per generation is μ bs = 4.77 × 10−10 and the insertion–deletion mutation rate is μ id = 1.58 × 10−11. The mutation rate varies as a function of the nucleotide context and is biased toward an excess of mutations from GC to AT, consistent with previous observations in other species. Interestingly, the mutation rates between the genomes of organelles and the nucleus differ, with a significantly higher mutation rate in the mitochondria. This confirms previous claims based on indirect estimations of the mutation rate in mitochondria of photosynthetic eukaryotes that acquired their plastid through a secondary endosymbiosis. Let |$A$| be an abelian variety defined over a number field and let |$G$| denote its Sato–Tate group. Under the assumption of certain standard conjectures on |$L$| -functions attached to the irreducible representations of |$G$|⁠ , we study the convergence rate of any virtual character of |$G$|⁠. We find that this convergence rate is dictated by several arithmetic invariants of |$A$|⁠ , such as its rank or its Sato–Tate group |$G$|⁠. The results are consonant with some previous experimental observations, and we also provide additional numerical evidence consistent with them. The techniques that we use were introduced by Sarnak in a letter to Mazur, in order to explain the bias in the sign of the Frobenius traces of an elliptic curve without complex multiplication defined over |${\mathbb Q}$|⁠. We show that the same methods can be adapted to study the convergence rate of the characters of its Sato–Tate group, and that they can also be employed in the more general case of abelian varieties over number fields. Background Respiratory rate is often measured over a period shorter than 1 min and then multiplied to produce a rate per minute. There are few reports of the performance of such estimates compared with rates measured over a full minute. Aim Compare performance of respiratory rates calculated from 15 and 30 s of observations with measurements over 1 min. Design A prospective single center observational study Methods The respiratory rates calculated from observations for 15 and 30 s were compared with simultaneous respiratory rates measured for a full minute on acutely ill medical patients during their admission to a resource poor hospital in sub-Saharan Africa using a novel respiratory rate tap counting software app. Results There were 770 respiratory rates recorded on 321 patients while they were in the hospital. The bias (limits of agreement) between the rate derived from 15 s of observations and the full minute was −1.22 breaths per minute (bpm) (−7.16 to 4.72 bpm), and between the rate derived from 30 s and the full minute was −0.46 bpm (–3.89 to 2.97 bpm). Rates observed over 1 min that scored 3 National Early Warning Score points were not identified by half the rates derived from 15 s and a quarter of the rates derived from 30 s. Conclusion Practice-based evidence shows that abnormal respiratory rates are more reliably detected with measurements made over a full minute, and respiratory rate measurement 'short-cuts' often fail to identify sick patients. We consider the problem of approximating an analytic function on a compact interval from its values at |$M+1$| distinct points. When the points are equispaced, a recent result (the so-called impossibility theorem) has shown that the best possible convergence rate of a stable method is root-exponential in M , and that any method with faster exponential convergence must also be exponentially ill conditioned at a certain rate. This result hinges on a classical theorem of Coppersmith & Rivlin concerning the maximal behavior of polynomials bounded on an equispaced grid. In this paper, we first generalize this theorem to arbitrary point distributions. We then present an extension of the impossibility theorem valid for general nonequispaced points and apply it to the case of points that are equidistributed with respect to (modified) Jacobi weight functions. This leads to a necessary sampling rate for stable approximation from such points. We prove that this rate is also sufficient, and therefore exactly quantify (up to constants) the precise sampling rate for approximating analytic functions from such node distributions with stable methods. Numerical results—based on computing the maximal polynomial via a variant of the classical Remez algorithm—confirm our main theorems. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for polynomial least-squares approximations. In particular, we theoretically confirm the well-known heuristic that stable least-squares approximation using polynomials of degree N < M is possible only once M is sufficiently large for there to be a subset of N of the nodes that mimic the behavior of the |$N$| th set of Chebyshev nodes. The observational follow-up campaign of the gravitational wave (GW) multimessenger event GW170817/GRB170817A has shown that the prompt gamma-rays are consistent with a relativistic structured jet observed from a wide viewing angle ≳20°. We perform Bayesian inference using the data from early and late EM observations to determine the jet profile of GRB170817A assuming a structured jet model. We use the geometric dependence on the burst luminosity to produce a short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) efficiency function with redshift, which folded in with binary neutron star detection rate, allows us to estimate the future joint GW/sGRB detection rates for LIGO and Virgo detectors. We show that if the jet structured profile of GRB170817A is a relatively common feature of sGRBs, then there is a realistic probability of another off-axis coincident detection during the third aLIGO/Virgo observing run (O3). We also find that up to 4 yr−1 joint events may be observed during the advanced LIGO run at design sensitivity and up to 10 yr−1 by the upgraded advanced LIGO configuration A+. We show that the detection efficiencies for wide-angled sGRB emissions will be limited by GRB satellites as the GW detection range increases through proposed upgrades. Therefore, although the number of coincident detections will increase with GW detector sensitivity, the relative proportion of detected binary neutron stars with gamma-ray counterparts will decrease; 11 per cent for O3 down to 2 per cent during A+. Chlorarachniophyte and cryptophyte algae are unique among plastid-containing species in that they have a nucleomorph genome: a compact, highly reduced nuclear genome from a photosynthetic eukaryotic endosymbiont. Despite their independent origins, the nucleomorph genomes of these two lineages have similar genomic architectures, but little is known about the evolutionary pressures impacting nucleomorph DNA, particularly how their rates of evolution compare to those of the neighboring genetic compartments (the mitochondrion, plastid, and nucleus). Here, we use synonymous substitution rates to estimate relative mutation rates in the four genomes of nucleomorph-bearing algae. We show that the relative mutation rates of the host versus endosymbiont nuclear genomes are similar in both chlorarachniophytes and cryptophytes, despite the fact that nucleomorph gene sequences are notoriously highly divergent. There is some evidence, however, for slightly elevated mutation rates in the nucleomorph DNA of chlorarachniophytes—a feature not observed in that of cryptophytes. For both lineages, relative mutation rates in the plastid appear to be lower than those in the nucleus and nucleomorph (and, in one case, the mitochondrion), which is consistent with studies of other plastid-bearing protists. Given the divergent nature of nucleomorph genes, our finding of relatively low evolutionary rates in these genomes suggests that for both lineages a burst of evolutionary change and/or decreased selection pressures likely occurred early in the integration of the secondary endosymbiont. Previous estimates of drug development success rates rely on relatively small samples from databases curated by the pharmaceutical industry and are subject to potential selection biases. Using a sample of 406 038 entries of clinical trial data for over 21 143 compounds from January 1, 2000 to October 31, 2015, we estimate aggregate clinical trial success rates and durations. We also compute disaggregated estimates across several trial features including disease type, clinical phase, industry or academic sponsor, biomarker presence, lead indication status, and time. In several cases, our results differ significantly in detail from widely cited statistics. For example, oncology has a 3.4% success rate in our sample vs. 5.1% in prior studies. However, after declining to 1.7% in 2012, this rate has improved to 2.5% and 8.3% in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The different proteins of any proteome evolve at enormously different rates. One of the primary factors influencing rates of protein evolution is expression level, with highly expressed proteins tending to evolve at slow rates. This phenomenon, known as the expression level–evolutionary rate (E–R) anticorrelation, has been attributed to the abundance‐dependent deleterious effects of misfolding or misinteraction. We have recently shown that secreted proteins either lack an E–R anticorrelation or exhibit a significantly reduced E–R anticorrelation. This effect may be due to the strict quality control to which secreted proteins are subject in the endoplasmic reticulum (which is expected to reduce the rate of misfolding and its deleterious effects) or to their extracellular location (expected to reduce the rate of misinteraction and its deleterious effects). Among secreted proteins, N‐glycosylated ones are under particularly strong quality control. Here, we investigate how N‐linked glycosylation affects the E–R anticorrelation. Strikingly, we observe a positive E–R correlation among N‐glycosylated proteins. It is well known that the Galactic bar drives a gas inflow into the Central Molecular Zone, which fuels star formation, accretion on to the central supermassive black hole, and large-scale outflows. This inflow happens mostly through two symmetrical dust lanes, similar to those often seen in external barred galaxies. Here, we use the fact that the Milky Way dust lanes have been previously identified in 12CO datacubes and a simple geometrical model to derive the first observational determination of the mass inflow rate into the Central Molecular Zone. We find that the time-averaged inflow rate along the near-side dust lane is |$1.2^{+0.7}_{-0.8}\, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$| and along the far-side dust lane is |$1.5^{+0.9}_{-1.0}\, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$|⁠, which gives a total inflow of |$2.7^{+1.5}_{-1.7}\, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$|⁠. We also provide the time series of the inflow rate |$\dot{M}$| for the future few Myr. Accurate modeling of the complexity of morphological evolution is crucial for morphological phylogenetics and for performing tests on a wide variety of evolutionary scenarios. In this context, morphological integration and the problem of correlated categorical characters represent a major challenge. In particular, the magnitude and implications of correlations among serially homologous structures such as teeth have been much debated but were never tested statistically within a broad phylogenetic context. Here, we present a large-scale empirical study analyzing the serial variation of cingular crests on successive molars (M1, M2, and M3) of 274 placental species in a phylogenetic context. Both likelihood analyses and analysis of phylogenetic co-distributions demonstrated highly correlated evolution in the entire sample and thus the non-independence of these serial features at a macroevolutionary scale. Likelihood analyses show that their serial variation should be better scored within a single composite character model with constrained paths for transitions enabling simultaneous changes on all three molars, which suggests a strong developmental or genetic integration. These results are congruent with current genetic and developmental knowledge related to dental morphological variation and call into question the frequent use of separate characters scored on serially homologous structures of the dentition in phylogenetic analyses. Overall, they provide long-overdue and clear empirical evidence that in-depth studies of patterns of integration constitute an essential step toward more realistic character construction and modeling. Motivation Numerous sequencing studies, including transcriptomics of host-pathogen systems, sequencing of hybrid genomes, xenografts, mixed species systems, metagenomics and meta-transcriptomics, involve samples containing genetic material from divergent organisms. A crucial step in these studies is identifying from which organism each sequencing read originated, and the experimental design should be directed to minimize biases caused by cross-mapping of reads to incorrect source genomes. Additionally, pooling of sufficiently different genetic material into a single sequencing library could significantly reduce experimental costs but requires careful planning and assessment of the impact of cross-mapping. Having these applications in mind we designed Crossmapper, the first to our knowledge tool able to assess cross-mapping prior to sequencing, therefore allowing optimization of experimental design. Results Using any combination of reference genomes, Crossmapper performs read simulation and back-mapping of those reads to the pool of references, quantifies and reports the cross-mapping rates for each organism. Crossmapper performs these analyses with numerous user-specified parameters, including, among others, read length, read layout, coverage, mapping parameters, genomic or transcriptomic data. Additionally, it outputs the results in highly interactive and publication-ready reports. This allows the user to perform multiple comparisons at once and choose the experimental setup minimizing cross-mapping rates. Moreover, Crossmapper can be used for resource optimization in sequencing facilities by pooling different samples into one sequencing library. Motivation When different lineages of organisms independently adapt to similar environments, selection often acts repeatedly upon the same genes, leading to signatures of convergent evolutionary rate shifts at these genes. With the increasing availability of genome sequences for organisms displaying a variety of convergent traits, the ability to identify genes with such convergent rate signatures would enable new insights into the molecular basis of these traits. Results Here we present the R package RERconverge, which tests for association between relative evolutionary rates of genes and the evolution of traits across a phylogeny. RERconverge can perform associations with binary and continuous traits, and it contains tools for visualization and enrichment analyses of association results. Background The aim of the study was to measure the effect of colder winters compared to warmer winters on hospital admission rates in Suffolk County. Methods The setting of this study was Suffolk County in eastern England. The period of the study was financial years 2003/04–2012/13. The study was an analytic ecological study. Analysis involved calculation of rate ratios of hospital admission rates in colder winters compared to warmer winters, in all persons and the elderly. Results The main finding of the study was that all rate ratios for hospital admission rates in colder winters compared to warmer winters were significantly raised with effects of 2–5%. Rate ratios for all admissions in persons of all ages and persons aged 65 years and over were, respectively, 1.02 (99% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 1.03; P < 0.001) and 1.02 (99% CI: 1.01, 1.04; P < 0.001). Rate ratios for emergency admissions in persons of all ages and persons aged 65 years and over were, respectively, 1.05 (99% CI: 1.03, 1.06; P < 0.001) and 1.04 (99% CI: 1.01, 1.06; P < 0.001). Conclusion In Suffolk County, hospital admission rates are significantly raised in colder winters compared to warmer winters. This evidence may be useful in planning hospital services.
