This study reviews obstacle detection technologies in vegetation for autonomous vehicles or robots. Autonomous vehicles used in agriculture and as lawn mowers face many environmental obstacles that are difficult to recognize for the vehicle sensor. This review provides information on choosing appropriate sensors to detect obstacles through vegetation, based on experiments carried out in different agricultural fields. The experimental setup from the literature consists of sensors placed in front of obstacles, including a thermal camera; red, green, blue (RGB) camera; 360° camera; light detection and ranging (LiDAR); and radar. These sensors were used either in combination or single-handedly on agricultural vehicles to detect objects hidden inside the agricultural field. The thermal camera successfully detected hidden objects, such as barrels, human mannequins, and humans, as did LiDAR in one experiment. The RGB camera and stereo camera were less efficient at detecting hidden objects compared with protruding objects. Radar detects hidden objects easily but lacks resolution. Hyperspectral sensing systems can identify and classify objects, but they consume a lot of storage. To obtain clearer and more robust data of hidden objects in vegetation and extreme weather conditions, further experiments should be performed for various climatic conditions combining active and passive sensors.

The radar on the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission observes precipitation at 13.6 GHz (Ku-band) and 35.6 GHz (Ka-band) and also receives echoes from the earth’s surface. Statistics of surface measurements for non-raining conditions are saved in a database for later use in estimating the precipitation path-integrated attenuation. Previous work by Meneghini and Jones (2011) showed that while averaging over larger latitude/longitude bins increase the number of samples, it can also increase sample variance due to spatial inhomogeneity in the data. As a result, Meneghini and Kim (2017) proposed a new, adaptive method of database construction, in which the number of measurements averaged depends on the spatial homogeneity. The purpose of this work is to re-visit previous, single-frequency results using dual-frequency data and optimal interpolation (kriging). Results include that (1) temporal inhomogeneity can create similar results as spatial, (2) Ka-band behavior is similar to Ku-band, (3) the Ku-/Ka-band difference has less spatial inhomogeneity than either band by itself, and (4) kriging and the adaptive method can reduce the sample variance. The author concludes that finer spatial and temporal resolution is necessary in constructing the database for single frequencies but less so for the Ku-/Ka-band difference. The adaptive approach reduces sample standard deviation with a relatively modest computational increase.

Very short-term (0~3 h) radar-based quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF), also known as nowcasting, plays an essential role in flash flood warning, water resource management, and other hydrological applications. A novel nowcasting method combining radar data and a model wind field was developed and validated with two hurricane precipitation events. Compared with several existing nowcasting approaches, this work attempts to enhance the prediction capabilities from two major aspects. First, instead of using a radar reflectivity field, this work proposes the use of the rainfall rate field estimated from polarimetric radar variables in the motion field derivation. Second, the derived motion field is further corrected by the Rapid Refresh (RAP) model field. With the corrected motion field, the future rainfall rate field is predicted through a linear extrapolation method. The proposed method was validated using two hurricanes: Harvey and Irma. The proposed work shows an enhanced performance according to statistical scores. Compared with the model only and centroid-tracking only approaches, the average probability of detection (POD) increases about 25% and 50%, the average critical success index (CSI) increases about 20% and 37%, and the average false alarm rate (FAR) decreases about 14% and 16%, respectively.

The mountainous Pacific Northwest is prone to heavy winter rainfall, resulting in hundreds of landslides per year, human casualties, and billions of dollars of property damage. Precipitation is a major hydrologic trigger for landslides in the northwestern US and around the world. This paper reviews existing literature to outline a framework to study the linkage between precipitation and landslide hazards over the northwestern US using satellite remote sensing techniques including interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) methods, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite precipitation products, and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite soil moisture data, along with correlation analysis and numerical modeling. InSAR time-series displacements provide an indication of landslide occurrence and extent, and help characterize the basal slip surface and slide-body volume based on the law of mass conservation. Precipitation and soil moisture sensed from the space and ground contribute to creating hydrogeological models associated with water infiltration. These crucial parameters are tracked through correlation and slope stability analysis to understand landslide dynamics. We highlight the results on mapping landslides over the state of Washington and analyses at a few select sites over southern Washington and southwestern Oregon. We conclude that satellite observations of landslide motions and the attributing hydrological variables from both radar and optical images improve our understanding of the inter-relationships between the hydrologic processes along with topographic and geologic settings, and the landslide kinematics and mechanisms inferred from time-series measurements and landslide modeling on a regional scale.

Currently, space debris represents a threat for satellites and space-based operations, both in-orbit and during the launching process. The yearly increase in space debris represents a serious concern to major space agencies leading to the development of dedicated space programs to deal with this issue. Ground-based radars can detect Earth orbiting debris down to a few square centimeters and therefore constitute a major building block of a space debris monitoring system. New radar sensors are required in Europe to enhance capabilities and availability of its small radar network capable of tracking and surveying space objects and to respond to the debris increase expected from the New Space economy activities. This article presents ATLAS, a new tracking radar system for debris detection located in Portugal. It starts by an extensive technical description of all the system components followed by a study that estimates its future performance. A section dedicated to waveform design is also presented, since the system allows the usage of several types of pulse modulation schemes such as LFM and phase coded modulations while enabling the development and testing of more advanced ones. By presenting an architecture that is highly modular with fully digital signal processing, ATLAS establishes a platform for fast and easy development, research and innovation. Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) techniques are now well established and accepted for monitoring ground displacements. The presence of shallow-seated landslides, ubiquitous phenomena in the tropics, offers an opportunity to monitor and map these hazards using PSI at the regional scale. Thus, the Western Ghats of India, experiencing a tropical climate and in a topographically complex region of the world, provides an ideal study site to test the efficacy of landslide detection with PSI. The biggest challenge in using the PSI technique in tropical regions is the additional noise in data due to vegetation. In this study, we filtered these noises by utilizing the 95-percentile of the highest coherence data, which also reduced the redundancy of the PSI points. The study examined 12 landslides that occurred within one of the three temporal categories grouped as Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, categorized in relation to PSI monitoring periods, which was also further classified into east- and west-facing landslides. The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data is in descending mode, and, therefore, the east-facing landslides are characterized by positive deformation velocity values, whereas the west-facing landslides have negative deformation values. Further, the landslide-prone areas, delineated using the conventional factor of safety (FS), were refined and mapped using PSI velocity values. The combination of PSI with the conventional FS approach helped to identify exclusive zones prone to landslides. The main aim of such an attempt is to identify critical areas in the unstable category in the map prepared using FS and prioritizing the mitigation measures, and to develop a road map for any developmental activities. The approach also helps to increase confidence in the susceptibility mapping and reduce false alarms.

This is motivated by a requirement for robust, autonomy-enabling scene understanding in unknown environments. In the method proposed in this paper, discriminative machine-learning approaches are applied to infer traversability and predict routes from Frequency-Modulated Contunuous-Wave (FMCV) radar frames. Firstly, using geometric features extracted from LiDAR point clouds as inputs to a fuzzy-logic rule set, traversability pseudo-labels are assigned to radar frames from which weak supervision is applied to learn traversability from radar. Secondly, routes through the scanned environment can be predicted after they are learned from the odometry traces arising from traversals demonstrated by the autonomous vehicle (AV). In conjunction, therefore, a model pretrained for traversability prediction is used to enhance the performance of the route proposal architecture. Experiments are conducted on the most extensive radar-focused urban autonomy dataset available to the community. Our key finding is that joint learning of traversability and demonstrated routes lends itself best to a model which understands where the vehicle should feasibly drive. We show that the traversability characteristics can be recovered satisfactorily, so that this recovered representation can be used in optimal path planning, and that an end-to-end formulation including both traversability feature extraction and routes learned by expert demonstration recovers smooth, drivable paths that are comprehensive in their coverage of the underlying road network. We conclude that the proposed system will find use in enabling mapless vehicle autonomy in extreme environments.

Oceanic eddy is a common natural phenomenon that has large influence on human activities, and the measurement and detection of offshore eddies are significant for oceanographic research. The previous classical detecting methods, such as the Okubo&ndash, Weiss algorithm (OW), vector geometry algorithm (VG), and winding angles algorithm (WA), not only depend on expert&rsquo, s experiences to set an accurate threshold, but also need heavy calculations for large detection regions. Differently from the previous works, this paper proposes a deep eddy detection neural network with pixel segmentation skeleton on high frequency radar (HFR) data, namely, the deep eddy detection network (DEDNet). An offshore eddy detection dataset is firstly constructed, which has origins from the sea surface current data measured by two HFR systems on the South China Sea. Then, a spatial globally optimum and strong detail-distinguishing pixel segmentation network is presented to automatically detect and localize offshore eddies in a flow chart. An eddy detection network based on fully convolutional networks (FCN) is also presented for comparison with DEDNet. Experimental results show that DEDNet performs better than the FCN-based eddy detection network and is competitive with the classical statistics-based methods.

The measurement and analysis of the arterial pulse wave provides information about the state of vascular health. When measuring blood pressure according to Riva-Rocci, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure is measured non-invasively with an inflatable pressure cuff on the upper arm. Today&rsquo, s blood pressure monitors analyze the pulse wave in reference to the rising or falling cuff pressure. With the help of additional pulse wave analysis, one can determine the pulse rate and the heart rate variability. In this paper, we investigated the concept, the construction, and the limitations of ultrawideband (UWB) radar and continuous wave (CW) radar, which provide continuous and non-invasive pulse wave measurements. We integrated the sensors into a complete measurement system. We measured the pulse wave of the cuff pressure, the radar sensor (both UWB and CW), the optical sensor, and ultrasonic Doppler as a reference. We discussed the results and the sensor characteristics. The main conclusion was that the resolution of the pulse radar was too low, even with a maximum bandwidth of 10 GHz, to measure pulse waves reliably. The continuous wave radar provides promising results for a phantom if adjusted properly with phase shifts and frequency. In the future, we intend to develop a CW radar solution with frequency adaption.

Many technical infrastructure operators manage facilities distributed over large areas. They face the problem of finding out if a flood hit a specific facility located in the open countryside. Physical inspection after every heavy rain is time and personnel consuming, and equipping all facilities with flood detection is expensive. Therefore, methods are being sought to ensure that these facilities are monitored at a minimum cost. One of the possibilities is using remote sensing, especially radar data regularly scanned by satellites. A significant challenge in this area was the launch of Sentinel-1 providing free-of-charge data with adequate spatial resolution and relatively high revisit time. This paper presents a developed automatic processing chain for flood detection in the open landscape from Sentinel-1 data. Flood detection can be started on-demand; however, it mainly focuses on autonomous near real-time monitoring. It is based on a combination of algorithms for multi-temporal change detection and histogram thresholding open-water detection. The solution was validated on five flood events in four European countries by comparing its results with flood delineation derived from reference datasets. Long-term tests were also performed to evaluate the potential for a false positive occurrence. In the statistical classification assessments, the mean value of user accuracy (producer accuracy) for open-water class reached 83% (65%). The developed solution typically provided flooded polygons in the same areas as the reference dataset, but of a smaller size. This fact is mainly attributed to the use of universal sensitivity parameters, independent of the specific location, which ensure almost complete successful suppression of false alarms.

Microwave breast imaging has seen increasing use in clinical investigations in the past decade with over eight systems having being trialled with patients. The majority of systems use radar-based algorithms to reconstruct the image shown to the clinician which requires an estimate of the dielectric properties of the breast to synthetically focus signals to reconstruct the image. Both simulated and experimental studies have shown that, even in simplified scenarios, misestimation of the dielectric properties can impair both the image quality and tumour detection. Many methods have been proposed to address the issue of the estimation of dielectric properties, but few have been tested with patient images. In this work, a leading approach for dielectric properties estimation based on the computation of many candidate images for microwave breast imaging is analysed with patient images for the first time. Using five clinical case studies of both healthy breasts and breasts with abnormalities, the advantages and disadvantages of computational patient-specific microwave breast image reconstruction are highlighted.

Thanks to the availability of a significant amount of inexpensive commercial Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar sensors, designed primarily for the automotive domain, it is interesting to understand if they can be used in alternative applications. It is well known that with a radar system it is possible to identify the micro-Doppler feature of a target, to detect the nature of the target itself (what the target is) or how it is vibrating. In fact, thanks to their high transmission frequency, large bandwidth and very short chirp signals, radars designed for automotive applications are able to provide sub-millimeter resolution and a large detection bandwidth, to the point that it is here proposed to exploit them in the vibrational analysis of a target. The aim is to evaluate what information on the vibrations can be extracted, and what are the performance obtainable. In the present work, the use of a commercial Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radar is described, and the performances achieved in terms of displacement and vibration frequency measurement of the target are compared with the measurement results obtained through a laser vibrometer, considered as the reference instrument. The attained experimental results show that the radar under test and the reference laser vibrometer achieve comparable outcomes, even in a cluttered scenario.

Flood disasters have a huge effect on human life, the economy, and the ecosystem. Quickly extracting the spatial extent of flooding is necessary for disaster analysis and rescue planning. Thus, extensive studies have utilized optical or radar data for the extraction of water distribution and monitoring of flood events. As the quality of detected flood inundation coverage by optical images is degraded by cloud cover, the current data products derived from optical sensors cannot meet the needs of rapid flood-range monitoring. The presented study proposes an adaptive thresholding method for extracting water coverage (AT-EWC) regarding rapid flooding from Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with the assistance of prior information from Landsat data. Our method follows three major steps. First, applying the dynamic surface water extent (DSWE) algorithm to Landsat data acquired from the year 2000 to 2016, the distribution probability of water and non-water is calculated through the Google Earth Engine platform. Then, current water coverage is extracted from Sentinel-1 data. Specifically, the persistent water and non-water datasets are used to automatically determine the type of image histogram. Finally, the inundated areas are calculated by combining the persistent water and non-water datasets and the current water coverage as derived from the above two steps. This approach is fast and fully automated for flood detection. In the classification results from the WeiFang and Ji’An sites, the overall classification accuracy of water and land detection reached 95–97%. Our approach is fully automatic. In particular, the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional method over small water bodies (inland watersheds with few lakes) and makes up for the low temporal resolution of existing water products.

Spatially explicit data on tidal and waves are required as part of coastal monitoring applications (e.g., radar monitoring of coastal change) for the design of interventions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. A deployment over two tidal cycles of a low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) buoy at Rossall (near Fleetwood), UK demonstrated the potential to record good quality sea level and wave data within the intertidal zone. During each slack water and the following ebb tide, the sea level data were of good quality and comparable with data from nearby tide gauges on the national tide gauge network. Moreover, the GNSS receiver was able to capture wave information and these compared well with data from a commercial wave buoy situated 9.5 km offshore. Discontinuities were observed in the elevation data during flood tide, coincident with high accelerations and losing satellite signal lock. These were probably due to strong tidal currents, which, combined with spilling waves, would put the mooring line under tension and allow white water to spill over the antenna resulting in the periodic loss of GNSS signals, hence degrading the vertical solutions.

A Ka-band dual-polarization magnetoelectric (ME) dipole antenna array based on three-dimensional (3D)-printed technology with low sidelobe level (SLL) is proposed in this paper. The metal posts and cross-slots are explored to build a novel subarray with 2 × 2-unit ME-dipoles as the basic element. Creatively, a square waveguide to cross-slots transition with a pyramid horn cavity structure is investigated to feed the ME-dipole subarray. Furthermore, two types of power-tapering corporate-feed networks with laminated structures are used to design an 8 × 8-unit low-SLL array. The fabricated array has a relative bandwidth (VSWR < 2) of 14.3% and 17.1%, with a realized gain higher than 25.8 dBi and 26.1 dBi for the H-pol. and V-pol., respectively. The maximum radiation efficiency for both arrays is 73.2%. The measured first sidelobe levels are less than –17.5 dB for both polarizations. With competitive performance and low fabrication cost, the proposed dual-polarization ME-dipole antenna array would be valuable for polarization-agile radar and communication systems.

The High Efficiency Video Coding Standard (HEVC) is one of the most advanced coding schemes at present, and its excellent coding performance is highly suitable for application in the navigation field with limited bandwidth. In recent years, the development of emerging technologies such as screen sharing and remote control has promoted the process of realizing the virtual driving of unmanned ships. In order to improve the transmission and coding efficiency during screen sharing, HEVC proposes a new extension scheme for screen content coding (HEVC-SCC), which is based on the original coding framework. SCC has improved the performance of compressing computer graphics content and video by adding new coding tools, but the complexity of the algorithm has also increased. At present, there is no delay in the compression optimization method designed for radar digital video in the field of navigation. Therefore, our paper starts from the perspective of increasing the speed of encoded radar video, and takes reducing the computational complexity of the rate distortion cost (RD-cost) as the goal of optimization. By analyzing the characteristics of shipborne radar digital video, a fast encoding algorithm for shipborne radar digital video based on deep learning is proposed. Firstly, a coding tree unit (CTU) division depth interval dataset of shipborne radar images was established. Secondly, in order to avoid erroneously skipping of the intra block copy (IBC)/palette mode (PLT) in the coding unit (CU) division search process, we designed a method to divide the depth interval by predicting the CTU in advance and limiting the CU rate distortion cost to be outside the traversal calculation depth interval, which effectively reduced the compression time. The effect of radar transmission and display shows that, within the acceptable range of Bjøntegaard Delta Bit Rate (BD-BR) and Bjøntegaard Delta Peak Signal to Noise Rate (BD-PSNR) attenuation, the algorithm proposed in this paper reduces the coding time by about 39.84%, on average, compared to SCM8.7.

Respiration rate monitoring using ultra-wideband (UWB) radar is preferred because it provides contactless measurement without restricting the person’s privacy. This study considers a novel non-contact-based solution using a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) UWB impulse radar. In the proposed system, the collected radar data are converted to several narrow-band signals using the generalized Goertzel algorithm (GGA), which are used as the input of the designed phased arrays for position estimation. In this context, we introduce the incoherent signal subspace methods (ISSM) for the direction of arrivals (DOAs) and distance evaluation. Meanwhile, a beam focusing approach is used to determine each individual and estimate their breathing rate automatically based on a linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer. The experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm can achieve high estimation accuracy in a variety of test environments, with an error of 2%, 5%, and 2% for DOA, distance, and respiration rate, respectively.

Extensive efforts have been made to observe the accumulation and melting of seasonal snow. However, making accurate observations of snow water equivalent (SWE) at global scales is challenging. Active radar systems show promise, provided the dielectric properties of the snowpack are accurately constrained. The dielectric constant (k) determines the velocity of a radar wave through snow, which is a critical component of time-of-flight radar techniques such as ground penetrating radar and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). However, equations used to estimate k have been validated only for specific conditions with limited in situ validation for seasonal snow applications. The goal of this work was to further understand the dielectric permittivity of seasonal snow under both dry and wet conditions. We utilized extensive direct field observations of k, along with corresponding snow density and liquid water content (LWC) measurements. Data were collected in the Jemez Mountains, NM; Sandia Mountains, NM; Grand Mesa, CO; and Cameron Pass, CO from February 2020 to May 2021. We present empirical relationships based on 146 snow pits for dry snow conditions and 92 independent LWC observations in naturally melting snowpacks. Regression results had r2 values of 0.57 and 0.37 for dry and wet snow conditions, respectively. Our results in dry snow showed large differences between our in situ observations and commonly applied equations. We attribute these differences to assumptions in the shape of the snow grains that may not hold true for seasonal snow applications. Different assumptions, and thus different equations, may be necessary for varying snowpack conditions in different climates, suggesting that further testing is necessary. When considering wet snow, large differences were found between commonly applied equations and our in situ measurements. Many previous equations assume a background (dry snow) k that we found to be inaccurate, as previously stated, and is the primary driver of resulting uncertainty. Our results suggest large errors in SWE (10–15%) or LWC (0.05–0.07 volumetric LWC) estimates based on current equations. The work presented here could prove useful for making accurate observations of changes in SWE using future InSAR opportunities such as NISAR and ROSE-L.

Multi-source meteorological data can reflect the development process of single meteorological elements from different angles. Making full use of multi-source meteorological data is an effective method to improve the performance of weather nowcasting. For precipitation nowcasting, this paper proposes a novel multi-input multi-output recurrent neural network model based on multimodal fusion and spatiotemporal prediction, named MFSP-Net. It uses precipitation grid data, radar echo data, and reanalysis data as input data and simultaneously realizes 0–4 h precipitation amount nowcasting and precipitation intensity nowcasting. MFSP-Net can perform the spatiotemporal-scale fusion of the three sources of input data while retaining the spatiotemporal information flow of them. The multi-task learning strategy is used to train the network. We conduct experiments on the dataset of Southeast China, and the results show that MFSP-Net comprehensively improves the performance of the nowcasting of precipitation amounts. For precipitation intensity nowcasting, MFSP-Net has obvious advantages in heavy precipitation nowcasting and the middle and late stages of nowcasting.

In this paper, we analyze and mitigate the cross-channel interference, which is found in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio frequency (RF) sensing systems. For a millimeter wave (mm-Wave) MIMO system, we present a geometrical three-dimensional (3D) channel model to simulate the time-variant (TV) trajectories of a moving scatterer. We collected RF data using a state-of-the-art radar known as Ancortek SDR-KIT 2400T2R4, which is a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) MIMO radar system operating in the K-band. The Ancortek radar is currently the only K-band MIMO commercial radar system that offers customized antenna configurations. It is shown that this radar system encounters the problem of interference between the various subchannels. We propose an optimal approach to mitigate the problem of cross-channel interference by inducing a propagation delay in one of the channels and apply range gating. The measurement results prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach by demonstrating a complete elimination of the interference problem. The application of the proposed solution on Ancortek’s SDR-KIT 2400T2R4 allows resolving all subchannel links in a distributed MIMO configuration. This allows using MIMO RF sensing techniques to track a moving scatterer (target) regardless of its direction of motion.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems are sensors that are able to acquire underground images by scanning the surface of the soil/pavement under investigation. Usually, a GPR system records its own position along the scan line, using a mechanical odometer, i.e., a rolling wheel in contact with the ground. This simple and cheap solution can be ineffective on uneven terrains. In this paper, a positioning system based on an interferometric radar is presented. This kind of radar is able to detect small displacements of the targets in its field of view. Such a capability was used to track the GPR position along a line. The system was validated with simulations and tested in a realistic experimental scenario.

A new dual-frequency Doppler polarimetric cloud radar (DDCR), working at 35-GHz (Ka-band radar, wavelength: 8.6 mm) and 94-GHz (W-band radar, wavelength: 3.2 mm) frequencies, has been in operation at Yangbajing Observatory on the Tibetan Plateau (China) for more than a year at the time of writing. Calculations and field observations show that the DDCR has a high detection sensitivity of −39.2 dBZ at 10 km and −33 dBZ at 10 km for the 94-GHz radar and 35-GHz radar, respectively. The radar reflectivity measured by the two radars illustrates different characteristics for different types of cloud: for precipitation, the attenuation caused by liquid cloud droplets is obviously more serious for the 94-GHz radar than the 35-GHz radar (the difference reaches 40 dB in some cases), and the 94-GHz radar lost signals due to serious attenuation by heavy rainfall, while for clouds dominated by ice crystals where the attenuation significantly weakens, the 94-GHz radar shows better detection ability than the 35-GHz radar. Observations in the Tibetan region show that the 35-GHz radar is prone to missing cloud near the edge, such as the cloud-top portion, resulting in underestimation of the cloud-top height (CTH). Statistical analysis based on one year of observations shows that the mean CTH measured by the 94-GHz radar in the Tibetan region is approximately 600 m higher than that measured by the 35-GHz radar. The analysis in this paper shows that the DDCR, with its dual-frequency design, provides more valuable information than simpler configurations, and will therefore play an important role in improving our understanding of clouds and precipitation in the Tibetan region.

Video synthetic aperture radar (Video-SAR) allows continuous and intuitive observation and is widely used for radar moving target tracking. The shadow of a moving target has the characteristics of stable scattering and no location shift, making moving target tracking using shadows a hot topic. However, the existing techniques mainly rely on the appearance of targets, which is impractical and costly, especially for tracking targets of interest (TOIs) with high diversity and arbitrariness. Therefore, to solve this problem, we propose a novel guided anchor Siamese network (GASN) dedicated to arbitrary TOI tracking in Video-SAR. First, GASN searches for matching areas in the subsequent frames with the initial area of the TOI in the first frame are conducted, returning the most similar area using a matching function, which is learned from general training without TOI-related data. With the learned matching function, GASN can be used to track arbitrary TOIs. Moreover, we also constructed a guided anchor subnetwork, referred to as GA-SubNet, which employs the prior information of the first frame and generates sparse anchors of the same shape as the TOIs. The number of unnecessary anchors is therefore reduced to suppress false alarms. Our method was evaluated on simulated and real Video-SAR data. The experimental results demonstrated that GASN outperforms state-of-the-art methods, including two types of traditional tracking methods (MOSSE and KCF) and two types of modern deep learning techniques (Siamese-FC and Siamese-RPN). We also conducted an ablation experiment to demonstrate the effectiveness of GA-SubNet.

Soil moisture plays an important role in the land surface model. In this paper, a method of using VV polarization Sentinel-1 SAR and Landsat optical data to retrieve soil moisture data was proposed by combining the water cloud model (WCM) and the deep belief network (DBN). Since the simple combination of training data in the neural network cannot effectively improve the accuracy of the soil moisture inversion results, a WCM physical model was used to eliminate the effect of vegetation cover on the ground backscatter, in order to obtain the bare soil backscatter coefficient. This improved the correlation of ground soil backscatter characteristics with soil moisture. A DBN soil moisture inversion model based on the bare soil backscatter coefficients as the foundation training data combined with radar incidence angle and terrain factors obtained good inversion results. Studies in the Naqu area of the Tibetan Plateau showed that vegetation cover had a significant effect on the soil moisture, and the goodness of fit (R2) between the backscatter coefficient and soil moisture before and after the elimination of vegetation cover was 0.38 and 0.50, respectively. The correlation between the backscatter coefficient and the soil moisture was improved after eliminating the vegetation cover. The inversion results of the DBN soil moisture model were further improved through iterative parameters. The model prediction reached its highest level of accuracy when the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) was set to seven layers, the bias and R were 0.007 and 0.88, respectively. Ten-fold cross-validation showed that the DBN soil moisture model performed stably with different data. The prediction was further improved when the bare soil backscatter coefficient was used as the training data. The mean values of the root mean square error (RMSE), the inequality coefficient (TIC), and the mean absolute percent error (MAPE) were 0.023, 0.09, and 11.13, respectively.

The algorithm to retrieve wind speed in a wide swath from the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) was developed for the data of Dual Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) operating in scanning mode installed onboard a Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite. The data for Ku-band radar were used. Equivalent NRCS values at nadir were estimated in a wide swath under the geometrical optics approximation from off-nadir observations. Using these equivalent NRCS nadir values and the sea buoys data, the new parameterization of dependence between NRCS at nadir and the wind speed was obtained. The algorithm was validated using ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) data and revealed good accuracy. DPR data are promising for determining wind speed in coastal areas.

Debris laser ranging (DLR) is receiving considerable attention as an accurate and effective method of determining and predicting the orbits of space debris. This paper reports some technologies of DLR, such as the high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) laser pulse, large-aperture telescope, telescope array, multi-static stations receiving signals. DLR with a picosecond laser at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory is also presented. A few hundred laps of space debris laser-ranging measurements have been made. A double-pulse picosecond laser with an average power of 4.2 W, a PRF of 1 kHz, and a wavelength of 532 nm has been implemented successfully in DLR, it’s the first time that DLR technology has reached a ranging precision at the sub-decimeter level. In addition, the characteristics of the picosecond-pulse-width laser transmission with the advantages of transmission in laser ranging were analyzed. With a mode of the pulse-burst picosecond laser having high average power, the DLR system has tracked small debris with a radar cross-section (RCS) of 0.91 m2 at a ranging distance up to 1726.8 km, corresponding to an RCS of 0.1 m2 at a distance of 1000 km. These works are expected to provide new technologies to further improve the performance of DLR.

Designing beampatterns with constant beamwidth over a wide range of frequencies is useful in many applications in speech, radar, sonar and communication. In this paper, we design constant-beamwidth beamformers for concentric ring arrays. The proposed beamformers utilize the circular geometry to provide improved beamwidth consistency compared to beamformers which are designed for linear sensor arrays of the same order. In the proposed configuration, all sensors on each ring share the same weight value. This constraint significantly simplifies the beamformers and reduces the hardware and computational resources required in a physical setup. Furthermore, a theoretical justification of the beamforming method is provided. We demonstrate the advantages of the proposed beamformers compared to the one-dimensional configuration in terms of directivity index, white noise gain and sidelobe attenuation.

This study first describes the extended Grid-Point Statistical Interpolation analysis system (GSI)-based ensemble-variational data assimilation (DA) system within the North American Mesoscale Rapid Refresh (NAMRR) system for the Nonhydrostatic Multiscale Model on the B grid (NMMB). Experiments were conducted to examine three critical aspects of data assimilation configuration in this system. Ten retrospective high-impact convective cases during the warm season of 2015–2016 were adopted for testing. A 10-member, 18 h ensemble forecast was launched for each experiment. Specifically, the experiment using horizontal (vertical) localization radii (Lr) of 300 km (0.55-scaled height measured in the nature log of pressure) overall had more skills than that of 500 km (1.1-scaled height) for conventional in-situ observation assimilation. Diagnostics suggest that the higher forecast skills could be attributed to applying smaller Lr in the boundary with large temperature and moisture gradients. For radar DA, the experiment was more skillful with horizontal (vertical) Lr of 15 km (1.1-scaled height) than that of 12 km (0.55-scaled height). Diagnostics suggest that the improved forecasts were achieved by using wider Lr to spread radar observations into unobserved areas more effectively. Slight forecast skill differences between the relaxation inflation factors of 95% and 65% are presented. The impact of varying inflation magnitudes primarily occurred in the upper-level spread.

Concurrent measurements of three-dimensional wind velocities made with three co-located wind profilers operated at frequencies of 52 MHz, 449 MHz, and 1.29 GHz for the period 12–16 September 2017 are compared for the first time in this study. The velocity–azimuth display (VAD) method is employed to estimate the wind velocities. The result shows that, in the absence of precipitation, the root mean square difference (RMSD) in the horizontal wind speed velocities U and wind directions D between different pairs of wind profilers are, respectively, in the range of 0.94–0.99 ms−1 and 7.7–8.3°, and those of zonal wind component u and meridional wind component v are in the respective ranges of 0.91–1.02 ms−1 and 1.1–1.24 ms−1. However, the RMSDs between wind profilers and rawinsonde are in the range of 2.89–3.26 ms−1 for horizontal wind speed velocity and 11.17–14.48° for the wind direction, which are around 2–3 factors greater than those between the wind profilers on average. In addition to the RMSDs, MDs between wind profilers and radiosonde are around one order of magnitude larger than those between wind profilers. These results show that the RMSDs, MDs, and Stdds between radars are highly consistent with each other, and they are much smaller than those between radar and rawinsonde. This therefore suggests that the wind profiler-measured horizontal wind velocities are much more reliable, precise, and accurate than the rawinsonde measurement.

This article presents the hardware implementation and a behavioral model-based RF system modeling and simulation (M&amp, S) study of compressive sensing (CS) based 2D angle-of-arrival (AoA) measurement system for 2–18 GHz radar electronic support measures (RESM). A 6-channel ultra-wideband RF digital receiver was first developed using a PXIe-based multi-channel digital receiver paired with a 6-element random-spaced 2D cavity-backed-spiral-antenna array. Then the system was tested in an open lab environment. The measurement results showed that the system can measure AoA of impinging signals from 2–18 (GHz) with overall RMSE of estimation at 3.60, 2.74, 1.16, 0.67 and 0.56 (deg) in L, S, C, X and Ku bands, respectively. After that, using the RF high-fidelity M&amp, S (RF HF-M&amp, S) approach, a 6-channel AoA measurement system behavioral model was also developed and studied using a radar electronic warfare (REW) engagement scenario. The simulation result showed that the airborne AoA measurement system could successfully measure an S-band ground-based target acquisition radar signal in the dynamic REW environment. Using the RF HF-M&amp, S model, the applicability of the system in other frequencies within 2–18 (GHz) was also studied. The simulation results demonstrated that the airborne AoA measurement system can be used for 2–18 GHz RESM applications.

We investigate a target detection probability (TDP) using path loss of an airborne radar based on air-to-air scenarios in anomalous atmospheric and weather environments. In the process of calculating the TDP, it is necessary to obtain the overall path loss including the anomalous atmospheric environment, gas attenuation, rainfall attenuation, and beam scanning loss. The path loss including the quad-linear refractivity model and other radar input parameters is simulated using the Advanced Refractive Effects Prediction System (AREPS) software along the range and the altitude. For the gas and rainfall attenuations, ITU-R models are used to consider the weather environment. In addition, the radar beam scan loss and a radar cross section (RCS) of the target are considered to estimate the TDP of the airborne long-range radar. The TDP performance is examined by employing the threshold evaluations of the total path loss derived from the detectability factor and the free-space radar range equation. Finally, the TDPs are obtained by assuming various air-to-air scenarios for the airborne radar in anomalous atmospheric and weather environments.

Radar instruments have been widely used to measure snow water equivalent (SWE) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar is a promising approach for doing so from spaceborne platforms. Electromagnetic waves propagate through the snowpack at a velocity determined by its dielectric permittivity. Velocity estimates are a significant source of uncertainty in radar SWE retrievals, especially in wet snow. In dry snow, velocity can be calculated from relations between permittivity and snow density. However, wet snow velocity is a function of both snow density and liquid water content (LWC); the latter exhibits high spatiotemporal variability, there is no standard observation method, and it is not typically measured by automated stations. In this study, we used ground-penetrating radar (GPR), probed snow depths, and measured in situ vertically-averaged density to estimate SWE and bulk LWC for seven survey dates at Cameron Pass, Colorado (~3120 m) from April to June 2019. During this cooler than average season, median LWC for individual survey dates never exceeded 7 vol. %. However, in June, LWC values greater than 10 vol. % were observed in isolated areas where the ground and the base of the snowpack were saturated and therefore inhibited further meltwater output. LWC development was modulated by canopy cover and meltwater drainage was influenced by ground slope. We generated synthetic SWE retrievals that resemble the planned footprint of the NASA-ISRO L-band InSAR satellite (NISAR) from GPR using a dry snow density model. Synthetic SWE retrievals overestimated observed SWE by as much as 40% during the melt season due to the presence of LWC. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering LWC variability in order to fully realize the potential of future spaceborne radar missions for measuring SWE.

Radar technology is constantly evolving, and new applications are arising, particularly for the millimeter wave bands. A novel application for radar is gait monitoring for fall prevention, which may play a key role in maintaining the quality of life of people as they age. Alarming statistics indicate that one in three adults aged 65 years or older will experience a fall every year. A review of the sensors used for gait analysis and their applications to technology-based fall prevention interventions was conducted, focusing on wearable devices and radar technology. Knowledge gaps were identified, such as wearable radar development, application specific signal processing and the use of machine learning algorithms for classification and risk assessment. Fall prevention through gait monitoring in the natural environment presents significant opportunities for further research. Wearable radar could be useful for measuring gait parameters and performing fall risk-assessment using statistical methods, and could also be used to monitor obstacles in real-time.

In this paper, the localization problem of a mobile robot equipped with a Doppler–azimuth radar (D–AR) is investigated in the environment with multiple landmarks. For the type (2,0) robot kinematic model, the unknown modeling errors are generally aroused by the inaccurate odometer measurement. Meanwhile, the inaccurate odometer measurement can also give rise to a type of unknown bias for the D–AR measurement. For reducing the influence induced by modeling errors on the localization performance and enhancing the practicability of the developed robot localization algorithm, an adaptive fading extended Kalman filter (AFEKF)-based robot localization scheme is proposed. First, the robot kinematic model and the D–AR measurement model are modified by considering the impact caused by the inaccurate odometer measurement. Subsequently, in the frame of adaptive fading extended Kalman filtering, the way to the addressed robot localization problem with unknown biases is sought out and the stability of the developed AFEKF-based localization algorithm is also discussed. Finally, in order to testify the feasibility of the AFEKF-based localization scheme, three different kinds of modeling errors are considered and the comparative simulations are conducted with the conventional EKF. From the comparative simulation results, it can be seen that the average localization error under the developed AFEKF-based localization scheme is [0.0245 m0.0224 m0.0039 rad]T and the average localization errors using the conventional EKF are [1.0405 m2.2700 m0.1782 rad]T, [0.4963 m0.3482 m0.0254 rad]T and [0.2774 m0.3897 m0.0353 rad]T, respectively, under the three cases of the constant bias, the white Gaussian stochastic bias and the bounded uncertainty bias.

Crop identification is key to global food security. Due to the large scale of crop estimation, the science of remote sensing was able to do well in this field. The purpose of this study is to study the shortcomings and strengths of combined radar data and optical images to identify the type of crops in Tarom region (Iran). For this purpose, Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2 images were used to create a map in the study area. The Sentinel 1 data came from Google Earth Engine’s (GEE) Level-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) product. Sentinel 1 radar observations were projected onto a standard 10-m grid in GRD output. The Sen2Cor method was used to mask for clouds and cloud shadows, and the Sentinel 2 Level-1C data was sourced from the Copernicus Open Access Hub. To estimate the purpose of classification, stochastic forest classification method was used to predict classification accuracy. Using seven types of crops, the classification map of the 2020 growth season in Tarom was prepared using 10-day Sentinel 2 smooth mosaic NDVI and 12-day Sentinel 1 back mosaic. Kappa coefficient of 0.75 and a maximum accuracy of 85% were reported in this study. To achieve maximum classification accuracy, it is recommended to use a combination of radar and optical data, as this combination increases the chances of examining the details compared to the single-sensor classification method and achieves more reliable information.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) series provides new opportunities for continuous observation of precipitation at large scales with a high resolution. An operational quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) product has been produced based on multi-channel measurements from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) aboard the GOES-16 (formerly known as GOES-R). This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of this GOES-16 QPE product against a ground reference QPE product from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system over the continental United States (CONUS) during the warm seasons of 2018 and 2019. For the first time, the accuracy of GOES-16 QPE product was quantified using the gauge-corrected MRMS (GC-MRMS) QPE product, and a number of evaluation metrics were applied to adequately resolve the associated errors. The results indicated that precipitation occurrence and intensity estimated by the GOES-16 QPE agreed with GC-MRMS fairly well over the eastern United States (e.g., the probability of detection was close to 1.0, and the Pearson’s correlation coefficient was 0.80 during September 2019), while the discrepancies were noticeable over the western United States (e.g., the Pearson’s correlation coefficient was 0.64 for the same month). The performance of GOES-16 QPE was downgraded over the western United States, in part due to the limitations of the GOES-16 rainfall retrieval algorithm over complex terrains, and in part because of the poor radar coverage analyzed by the MRMS system. In addition, it was found that the GOES-16 QPE product significantly overestimated rainfall induced by the mesoscale convective systems in the midwestern United States, which must be addressed in the future development of GOES satellite rainfall retrieval algorithms.

As one of the main sensors for continuous maritime measurements of sea state parameters, high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) also plays an important role in ship detection and tracking. Compact HFSWR often suffers from missing targets, especially when the target appears near the Doppler region with heavy sea clutter or near another target in a multi-target scenario. To address this problem, an automatic ship detection method based on time–frequency (TF) analysis is presented in this paper. The TF target ridge areas are extracted in the TF image via the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix, image edge detection, and local maximum search. Then, whether ship signals exist in the TF ridges or not is decided by a decision threshold that is calculated by fitting the probability distribution function (PDF) of sea clutter in the TF domain. The proposed TF method can separate TF ridges of similar Doppler frequency and performs constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection for TF targets, which facilitates detecting these targets that are masked by sea clutter and other large targets. Experimental results show that the number of detected ships that match with the automatic identification system (AIS) records is four times more than that obtained by the conventional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detectors and 1.3 times more than that by the state-of-the-art TF method in consideration of approximately the same number of detected targets.

Today, a lot of research on autonomous driving technology is being conducted, and various vehicles with autonomous driving functions, such as ACC (adaptive cruise control) are being released. The autonomous vehicle recognizes obstacles ahead by the fusion of data from various sensors, such as lidar and radar sensors, including camera sensors. As the number of vehicles equipped with such autonomous driving functions increases, securing safety and reliability is a big issue. Recently, Mobileye proposed the RSS (responsibility-sensitive safety) model, which is a white box mathematical model, to secure the safety of autonomous vehicles and clarify responsibility in the case of an accident. In this paper, a method of applying the RSS model to a variable focus function camera that can cover the recognition range of a lidar sensor and a radar sensor with a single camera sensor is considered. The variables of the RSS model suitable for the variable focus function camera were defined, the variable values were determined, and the safe distances for each velocity were derived by applying the determined variable values. In addition, as a result of considering the time required to obtain the data, and the time required to change the focal length of the camera, it was confirmed that the response time obtained using the derived safe distance was a valid result.

The trapping layer refers to the atmospheric layer with vertical gradient of atmospheric refractivity less than −157 N-Units/km or vertical gradient of atmospheric modified refractivity 0 M-unit/km, which has a significant impact on radar and radio communication systems. Based on COSMIC and other radio occultation data, we show the statistical characteristics of the global trapping layer during 2005–2020.The statistical results show that the occurrence rate of the trapping layers is mainly concentrated between 50°S and 50°N, and higher occurrences of the trapping layers with more than 50% mainly occur in the boundary area between ocean and land, such as the northwest coastal area of Mexico, the west coastal area of Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, and the northwest area of Australia, etc. The altitude of the trapping layer is lower near the land and increases with the distance away from the coastline. The intensity is mainly between 6 M-unit and 24 M-unit (an M-unit is the unit of atmospheric modified refractivity), and the average value in some regions is above 24 M-unit, such as in the Arabian Sea area. In addition, the thickness of the trapping layer is between 50 and 240 m, and is generally larger over the ocean than over the land. These results reveal that the generation of the trapping layer is the result of the interaction of various background environmental factors such as radiation band migration, trade winds, monsoons, solar radiation heating, sea–land breezes and so on.

Frequency diverse array (FDA) radar has attracted much attention due to the angle and range dependence of the beam pattern. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar has high degrees of freedom (DOF) and spatial resolution. The FDA-MIMO radar, a hybrid of FDA and MIMO radar, can be used for target parameter estimation. This paper investigates a tensor-based reduced-dimension multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method, which is used for target parameter estimation in the FDA-MIMO radar. The existing subspace methods deteriorate quickly in performance with small samples and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To deal with the deterioration difficulty, the sparse estimation method is then proposed. However, the sparse algorithm has high computation complexity and poor stability, making it difficult to apply in practice. Therefore, we use tensor to capture the multi-dimensional structure of the received signal, which can optimize the effectiveness and stability of parameter estimation, reduce computation complexity and overcome performance degradation in small samples or low SNR simultaneously. In our work, we first obtain the tensor-based subspace by the high-order-singular value decomposition (HOSVD) and establish a two-dimensional spectrum function. Then the Lagrange multiplier method is applied to realize a one-dimensional spectrum function, estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) and reduce computation complexity. The transmitting steering vector is obtained by the partial derivative of the Lagrange function, and automatic pairing of target parameters is then realized. Finally, the range can be obtained by using the least square method to process the phase of transmitting steering vector. Method analysis and simulation results prove the superiority and reliability of the proposed method.

During road construction investments, the key issue affecting the structure’s safety is accurate subsoil recognition. Identifying subsoil variability zones or natural voids can be performed using geophysical methods, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is recommended for this task as it identifies the location and spatial range karst formations. This paper describes the methodology of acquisition and processing of GPR data for ground recognition for road investment. Additional subsoil research was performed after karst phenomena were identified in the investment area, formations not revealed by geological recognition from earlier studies during the pre-design stage. Mala Ramac CU II radar with a 250 MHz antenna and a Leica DS2000 with 250 and 700 MHz antennas with real-time geopositioning were used to obtain the data. Regarding GPR data postprocessing, we present a method of converting spatial visualization into a point cloud that allows for GPR and geodetic data integration and confrontation. This approach enabled us to determine the locations of control trenches, the results of which were used for material validation, which is necessary to improve the reliability of subsoil recognition. The results showed a high correlation between the recorded GPR signals and the subsoil structure. Additionally, differences in the quality of results for measurements conducted before laying supporting layers with slag and on the completed road structure surface are illustrated.

Radar data are essential to convection nowcasting and nudging-based radar data assimilation through diabatic initialization is one of the most effective approaches for forecasting convective systems with numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, used at several advanced global weather centers. It is desired to assess the uncertainty and physical consistency of this assimilation process. This paper investigated impacts of relaxation coefficient, radar data update intervals and continuous assimilation time duration and addressed the key issues and possible solutions of the radar data assimilation based on the WRF hydrometeor and latent heat nudging (HLHN) developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). It is revealed that excessively large relaxation coefficient forced the model to observations with a tendency greater than the physical terms of the convection, causing the dynamic imbalances and serious convection “ramp-down” right after the free forecast starts. Assimilating high update frequency radar data can make the tendency terms moderate and sustained thereby maintaining the assimilation effect and reducing fortuitous convection. HLHN requires a minimum continuous assimilation duration to contain the initial forced disturbance of the model. For a summer Meiyu precipitation case studied, the minimum duration is ~1 h. Appropriate selection of the HLHN parameters is able to effectively improve the temperature, humidity, and dynamic fields of the model. In addition, several issues still remain to be solved to further enhance HLHN.

Topography has an important role in shaping regional and global climate systems, as it acts as a mechanical barrier to the low-level moisture flow. Thus, a complex spatial pattern of rainfall can exist over the mountainous region. Moreover, it is critical to advance our understanding of the relationship between rainfall and topography in terms of rainfall timing, frequency, and magnitude. In this study, characteristics of austral summer (December–February) precipitation are analyzed using 17-year (1998–2014) high-spatial-resolution (0.05° × 0.05°) data obtained from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) over the Andean region focusing on topographic impact. We observe an interaction between precipitation patterns and topography, with clear precipitation–elevation relationships in the Andes regions. The rainfall maxima zone was observed over the higher terrain of the central and southern Andes, and the zone is attributed to frequency and intensity of rainfall, respectively. In the foothills of the central Andes, we find there was a persistent rain system when a moist, low-level flow was lifted due to topography. In contrast, steep mountain slopes and a relatively dry atmosphere modulate deep convection in the foothills of southern Andes.

At present, millimeter wave radar imaging technology has become a recognized human security solution in the field. The millimeter wave radar imaging system can be used to detect a concealed object, multiple-input multiple-output radar antennas and synthetic aperture radar techniques are used to obtain the raw data. The analytical Fourier transform algorithm is used for image reconstruction. When imaging a target at 90 mm from radar, which belongs to the near field imaging scene, the image resolution can reach 1.90 mm in X-direction and 1.73 mm in Y-direction. Since the error caused by the distance between radar and target will lead to noise, the original reconstruction image is processed by gamma transform, which eliminates image noise, then the image is enhanced by linearly stretched transform to improve visual recognition, which lays a good foundation for supervised learning. In order to flexibly deploy the machine learning algorithm in various application scenarios, ShuffleNetV2, MobileNetV3 and GhostNet representative of lightweight convolutional neural networks with redefined convolution, branch structure and optimized network layer structure are used to distinguish multi-category SAR images. Through the fusion of squeeze-and-excitation and the selective kernel attention mechanism, more precise features are extracted for classification, the proposed GhostNet_SEResNet56 can realize the best classification accuracy of SAR images within limited resources, which prediction accuracy is 98.18% and the number of parameters is 0.45 M.

Traditional radar target detection algorithms are mostly based on statistical theory. They have weak generalization capabilities for complex sea clutter environments and diverse target characteristics, and their detection performance would be significantly reduced. In this paper, the range-azimuth-frame information obtained by scanning radar is converted into plain position indicator (PPI) images, and a novel Radar-PPInet is proposed and used for marine target detection. The model includes CSPDarknet53, SPP, PANet, power non-maximum suppression (P-NMS), and multi-frame fusion section. The prediction frame coordinates, target category, and corresponding confidence are directly given through the feature extraction network. The network structure strengthens the receptive field and attention distribution structure, and further improves the efficiency of network training. P-NMS can effectively improve the problem of missed detection of multi-targets. Moreover, the false alarms caused by strong sea clutter are reduced by the multi-frame fusion, which is also a benefit for weak target detection. The verification using the X-band navigation radar PPI image dataset shows that compared with the traditional cell-average constant false alarm rate detector (CA-CFAR) and the two-stage Faster R-CNN algorithm, the proposed method significantly improved the detection probability by 15% and 10% under certain false alarm probability conditions, which is more suitable for various environment and target characteristics. Moreover, the computational burden is discussed showing that the Radar-PPInet detection model is significantly lower than the Faster R-CNN in terms of parameters and calculations.

Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) techniques have been motivated as a key enabling technology for advanced airborne radar applications. In this paper, a slow-time code design is considered for the STAP technique in airborne radar, and the principle for improving signal-to-clutter and noise ratio (SCNR) based on slow-time coding is given. We present two algorithms for the optimization of transmitted codes under the energy constraint on a predefined area of spatial-frequency and Doppler-frequency plane. The proposed algorithms are constructed based on convex optimization (CVX) and alternating direction (AD), respectively. Several criteria regarding parameter selection are also given for the optimization process. Numerical examples show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

As an autonomous system, an anti-radiation loitering munition (LM) experiences uncertainty in both a priori and sensed information during loitering because it is difficult to accurately know target radar information in advance, and the sensing performance of the seeker is affected by disturbance and errors. If, as it does in the state of the art, uncertainties are ignored and the LM travels its planned route, its battle effectiveness will be severely restricted. To tackle this problem, this paper studies the method of autonomous planning and control of loitering routes using limited a priori information of target radar and real-time sensing results. We establish a motion and sensing model based on the characteristics of anti-radiation LMs and use particle filtering to iteratively infer the target radar information. Based on model predictive control, we select a loitering path to minimize the uncertainty of the target information, so as to achieve trajectory planning control that is conducive to the acquisition of target radar information. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively complete the autonomous trajectory planning and control of anti-radiation LMs under uncertain conditions.

Sentinel-1 is currently the only synthetic-aperture radar, which radar measurements of the earth’s surface to be carried out, regardless of weather conditions, with high resolution up to 5–40 m and high periodicity from several to 12 days. Sentinel-1 creates a technological platform for the development of new globally remote sensing algorithms of soil moisture, not only for hydrological and climatic model applications, but also on a single field scale for individual farms in precision farming systems used. In this paper, the potential of soil moisture remote sensing using polarimetric Sentinel-1B backscattering observations was studied. As a test site, the fallow agricultural field with bare soil near the Minino village (56.0865°N, 92.6772°E), Krasnoyarsk region, the Russian Federation, was chosen. The relationship between the cross-polarized ratio, reflectivity, and the soil surface roughness established Oh used as a basis for developing the algorithm of soil moisture retrieval with neural networks (NNs) computational model. Two NNs is used as a universal regression technique to establish the relationship between scattering anisotropy, entropy and backscattering coefficients measured by the Sentinel-1B on the one hand and reflectivity on the other. Finally, the soil moisture was found from the soil reflectivity in solving the inverse problem using the Mironov dielectric model. During the field campaign from 21 May to 25 August 2020, it was shown that the proposed approach allows us to predict soil moisture values in the layer thickness of 0.00–0.05 m with the root-mean-square error and determination coefficient not worse than 3% and 0.726, respectively. The validity of the proposed approach needs additional verification on a wider dataset using soils of different textures, a wide range of variations in soil surface roughness, and moisture.

In this paper, we present a novel cooperative scheme of joint optimal resource allocation, such that the overall performance of the coexisting radar-communications (CRC) system can be improved. In our proposed scheme, target detection and multiuser communication are performed by radar and communication subsystems at the same time, as well as a control center, which is responsible for joint resource management. We aim to minimize the ISLR for target detection and maximize the sum-rate for communications simultaneously by jointly optimizing the band assignment and transmit power allocation. Since the resulting optimization problem involving two performance metrics and a binary constraint is a multiobjective nonconvex problem, a two-tier iterative decomposition (TT-ID) approach is devised to obtain the globally optimal solution. However, compared with the conventional radar signals, the autocorrelation function of the devised radar signal may still have relatively high sidelobes. In particular, when the data transmission becomes the primary purpose of the CRC system, the sidelobe performance gets worse. As a consequence, some weak targets are most likely overshadowed by the adjacent strong targets through the matched filtering at the radar receiver. To address this, a spectral estimation algorithm based on the Bayes Cauchy–Gaussian (Bayes–CG) model is employed to further reduce the range sidelobes of the matched filter output at the radar receiver according to the prior distribution of the desired autocorrelation. Finally, several numerical results are provided to show the merits of the proposed method.

In this paper, comprehensive mPoint, a method for generating 3D (range, azimuth, and elevation) point cloud of human targets using a Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) signal and Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) millimeter wave radar is proposed. Distinct from the TI-mPoint method proposed by TI technology, a comprehensive mPoint method considering both the static and dynamic characteristics of radar reflected signals is utilized to generate a high precision point cloud, resulting in more comprehensive information of the target being detected. The radar possessing 60&ndash, 64 GHz FMCW signal with two sets of different dimensional antennas is utilized in order to experimentally verify the results of the methodology. By using the proposed process, the point cloud data of human targets can be obtained based on six different postures of the underlying human body. The human posture cube and point cloud accuracy rates are defined in the paper in order to quantitively and qualitatively evaluate the quality of the generated point cloud. Benefitting from the proposed comprehensive mPoint, evidence shows that the point number and the accuracy rate of the generated point cloud compared with those from the popular TI-mPoint can be largely increased by 86% and 42%, respectively. In addition, the noise level of multipath reflection can be effectively reduced. Moreover, the length of the algorithm running time is only 1.6% longer than that of the previous method as a slight tradeoff.
