Permeable pavements are vital in sustainable urban water management, addressing critical challenges while enhancing environmental resilience. This study focuses on the innovative polyurethane-bound Porous Rubber Pavement (PRP), which possesses high permeability and elasticity due to its unique composition of stone and crumb rubber aggregates with polyurethane binders. PRP's useful benefits, such as noise reduction, efficient snow/ice management, and others, enhance its appeal, emphasizing the necessity for a thorough investigation into its performance and characteristics, especially in North America. To address these gaps, this paper comprehensively analyzes PRP's durability and performance, including its strength range, failure criteria, and susceptibility to moisture-induced damage. Various testing methods are utilized, such as evaluating the abrasion loss of the stone aggregate, rutting, stripping due to moisture susceptibility, resistance to degradation from impact and abrasion, and permeability tests. This study evaluates five distinct mix compositions with varied proportions of aggregates and binders. Further, it investigates the effects of different binder types on PRP performance, such as aromatic and aliphatic binders obtained from various sources. Upon the analysis of the comprehensive test results, it was found that the mix characterized by increased rubber aggregates and a high binder content demonstrated a superior performance across various tests for PRP applications. This mix exhibited an enhanced resistance to abrasion, raveling, rutting, and permanent deformation, showcasing its durability and functionality. Additionally, when combined with an aliphatic binder, it displayed an optimal performance even in challenging freeze–thaw conditions, making it a recommended choice for long-term pavement solutions. The importance of environmental consciousness and sustainability is increasing among transportation governing bodies worldwide. Many government bodies are concerned with maximizing the usage of recycled substances in road construction. Therefore, assessing the effect of recycled materials consumption is essential, mainly when designing new 'green' pavement types. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the impact of different treatments on improving the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of coarse recycled concrete aggregate (CRCA) and its application in asphalt mixes. Such an aim is accomplished by enhancing its physical and mechanical characteristics, as well as its microstructure. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and intermix phases of the ITZ area and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) compounds for CRCA were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDAX), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The performance of asphalt mixtures that included treated and untreated CRCA was also examined using different tests. It was found that heat treatment is an effective technique for enhancing the ITZ. However, cracks were seen in the mortar of CRCA when exposed to high temperatures (500 °C), which adversely affects the characteristics of the mortar. Acid treatment appeared to be an effective approach for improving the ITZ area. Nevertheless, the treatment that used acetic acid, a weak acid, was more effective than HCl acid, a strong acid. The outcomes revealed that the ITZ microstructure is significantly enhanced under different treatment types; however, microstructure improvements mainly included increased surface homogeneity and CSH compounds and a reduced Ca/Si ratio. It was also found that the asphalt mixtures with different proportions of untreated CRCA exhibited enhanced resistance to rutting. Furthermore, their tensile strength ratio (TSR) values were above the minimal level requirements. Moreover, the asphalt mixture with 30% CRCA, which was treated with various treatment methods, demonstrated a significant improvement in the mixtures' mechanical properties; therefore, its application is highly successful and an environmentally friendly solution. Permanent deformation, or rutting, is one of several critical distresses in flexible pavements. This paper introduced a novel experimental method, a penetration test, for asphalt mixtures to quantify the effects of glass fibre geogrids embedded in asphalt under repeated loading. It was found that the evolution of permanent deformation (εp) and its strain rate have three clearly identifiable stages. It was also observed that the presence of the geogrid increased the flow number and the number of cycles to failure significantly compared to control samples. Some of the current εp fitting models were found to be valid for deformation prediction under penetration. In addition, a new simple FN calculation method was also proposed based on strain rate and it showed consistent results. In particular, geogrid type "Grid10", which has smaller aperture size (12.7 mm) had slightly better reinforcement performance regarding the rutting resistance due to its larger contact area. Geosynthetic materials (i.e., geogrids, geotextiles and other geocomposites) act as an interlayer system and are widely used in construction applications. In pavement structures, geosynthetic layers provide potential benefits such as reinforcement, reflective cracking mitigation, increased fatigue life, and improved drainage and filtering. However, few studies have addressed the installation and construction practices of geosynthetics in pavements. Furthermore, the study of geosynthetics and their contribution during construction are limited. In this paper, a full-scale field study was conducted and three trial sections were constructed; two types of geosynthetics, a fibreglass geogrid and a geogrid composite, were installed in the asphalt binder course and at the interface between the subgrade and base layer, respectively, to be compared with a control section without geosynthetic reinforcement. Trial sections were instrumented to monitor the pressure applied on the subgrade, the strain in the base lift of the asphalt binder course, the temperature, and the moisture within the pavement structure during construction. In addition, post-construction field testing was performed to measure the stiffness of the pavements after construction. The results indicated that geosynthetic-reinforced pavements can maintain pavement resilience during construction and significantly mitigate the disturbances caused by construction activities. The geogrid embedded in the asphalt layer was demonstrated to reduce the pressure at the subgrade caused by paving equipment by 70% compared with the control section, while simultaneously reducing the longitudinal and transverse strain at the bottom of the asphalt layer by 54% and 99%. Observations from the geogrid composite test section also demonstrate the potential to minimize the impacts of future freeze–thaw at the subgrade due to the improved drainage and indirect insulation effect. Rising temperatures due to climate change can significantly impact the freeze–thaw condition of airport pavements in cold regions. This case study investigates the implications of warming temperatures on the freeze–thaw penetration and frost heave of pavements in critical airports across Canada. To this end, different methods were used in the quantification process through climate change simulations considering emission scenario RCP8.5 in 20 and 40 year time horizons. The results show that climate change would have different design implications for airport pavements, depending on their location. The predictions suggest a shallower frost penetration depth, and possibly less frost heave, for the airports not underlain by permafrost, while airports over permafrost areas might experience an increase in thickness of the active layer, ranging from 41 to 57 percent, by 2061. Among the different methods used in this study, it was observed that some methods performed better in predicting the frost depth of fine soils, while others worked better in the frost depth prediction of coarse soils. The results indicate the need for more mechanistic models to provide a more realistic prediction of freeze–thaw penetration, as compared to existing empirical models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of engineers to improve the long-term performance of road infrastructure in changing global climate has led to the development of alternate materials for pavement construction. Lightweight cellular concrete (LCC) is a viable option for colder climates where pavements undergo several freeze-thaw cycles each year, resulting in faster deterioration of pavements. This is due to LCCs' excellent freeze-thaw resistance, ease of placement, and potential sustainability benefits such as reduced use of virgin material and industrial by-products. However, there is a need to quantify these benefits and develop unified specifications for using LCC in the pavement structure. Therefore, this study examined the performance of flexible pavement sections that included a subbase layer, unbound granular materials for the control section, and three LCC densities (400, 475, and 600 kg/m3) for the LCC sections. Post-construction evaluation of pavement stiffness and roughness were evaluated using a Lightweight deflectometer and SurPro equipment. The results showed that LCC subbase thickness ≥ 250 mm produced over 22% smoother riding surfaces than unbound granular pavements while increasing pavement stiffness by up to 21%. Finally, this study recommends that LCC subbase thickness should not be thinner than 250 mm when using densities below 475 kg/m3 over weak subgrades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous pavements are designed and used in current construction practices to address environmental and safety issues related to wet weather. Porous rubber pavement (PRP) is a novel porous pavement material consisting of recycled crumb tire rubbers, stone aggregates, and polyurethane binders. The higher permeability (up to 45% of air voids) of PRP and its composition offers excellent benefits to the urban hydrological system and environment. Due to its recent outset in the Canadian climate, its properties and performance are not yet investigated. This research investigates PRP's properties and performance as pavement material through the construction of two trial sections incorporating three newly developed PRP mixes along with a Control Mix. Samples were obtained from the field and tested in the laboratory to determine the mechanical and durability properties, including indirect tensile strength, moisture-induced damage due to freeze-thaw cycles and permanent deformation. A field evaluation was also performed three times: right after construction, three weeks later and after seven months to determine stiffness, frictional properties, roughness and permeability. The results revealed that all PRP mixes exhibited excellent permeability and retained more than 68% of tensile strength after five freeze-thaw cycles. Although PRP showed significantly lower initial elastic modulus than conventional pavement material, ranging between 28 MPa to 59 MPa, in the springtime none of them went below 23 MPa. This study investigated the pore structure and its effects on mechanical properties of lightweight cellular concrete (LCC) in order to understand more and detailed characteristics of such structure. As part of investigation, environment scanning electron microscopes (ESEM) and industrial high-definition (HD) macro photography camera were separately used to capture and compare images of specimens. Physical properties of the pore structure, including pore area, size, perimeter, fit ellipse, and shape descriptors, were studied based on the image processing technology and software applications. Specimens with three different densities (400, 475, and 600 kg/m3) were prepared in the laboratory. Firstly, the effects of density on the characteristics of pore structure were investigated; furthermore, mechanical properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength of LCC) were tested. The relationships among pore characteristics, density, and mechanical properties were analyzed. Based on the results obtained from the lab test—comparisons made between specimens with high-densities and those with low-densities—it was found significant variability in bubble size, thickness, and irregularity of pores. Furthermore, the increase of density is accompanied by better mechanical properties, and the main influencing factors are the thickness of the solid part and the shape of the bubble. Coal gangue, a solid waste produced in coal production, had caused serious environmental pollution due to accumulation on dumps. Embankment filling can solve the problem while significantly consuming the amount of coal waste for mining. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and microscopic structure of coal gangue when it is subjected to erosion from water environment with different acidity. Using immersion testing to evaluate its stability in different hydro-chemical environments. Mechanical property parameters of coal gangue treated by solutions were investigated. The action microstructure of coal gangue was revealed through a series of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The results show that acidic solution behaved better improvement effect on compressive modulus and fraction of coal gangue samples owing to the generation of quartz and the reduction of aluminum, dissolving of some substances, and transforming of small scattered angular grains through soaking treatment. Alkalinity treatment can be chosen to improve cohesion of coal gangue as a result of polymeric silicon aluminum salt, with high viscosity, was produced by chemical reaction during immersion. Therefore, aqueous solution treatment contributes to engineering properties and presents great potential in both supplement road building materials and recycling of coal gangue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
