In real-world applications, feature selection is crucial for enhancing the performance of data science and machine learning models. Typically, feature selection is a complex combinatorial optimization problem and a multi-objective optimization problem. Its primary goals are to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and enhance the performance of machine learning algorithms. The selection of features in high-dimensional datasets is challenging due to the intricate relationships between features, which pose significant challenges to the performance and computational efficiency of algorithms. This paper introduces a Knowledge-Guided Competitive Co-Evolutionary Algorithm (KCCEA) for feature selection, especially for high-dimensional features. In the proposed algorithm, we make improvements to the foundational dominance-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm in two aspects. First, the use of feature correlation as knowledge to guide evolution enhances the search speed and quality of traditional multi-objective evolutionary algorithm solutions. Second, a dynamically allocated competitive–cooperative evolutionary mechanism is proposed, integrating the improved knowledge-guided evolution with traditional evolutionary algorithms, further enhancing the search efficiency and diversity of solutions. Through rigorous empirical testing on various datasets, the KCCEA demonstrates superior performance compared to basic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, providing effective solutions to multi-objective feature selection problems while enhancing the interpretability and effectiveness of prediction models. As a classical combinatorial optimization problem, the traveling salesman problem (TSP) has been extensively investigated in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research. Due to being NP-complete, it is still rather challenging to solve both effectively and efficiently. Because of its high theoretical significance and wide practical applications, great effort has been undertaken to solve it from the point of view of intelligent search. In this paper, we propose a two-stage probe-based search optimization algorithm for solving both symmetric and asymmetric TSPs through the stages of route development and a self-escape mechanism. Specifically, in the first stage, a reasonable proportion threshold filter of potential basis probes or partial routes is set up at each step during the complete route development process. In this way, the poor basis probes with longer routes are filtered out automatically. Moreover, four local augmentation operators are further employed to improve these potential basis probes at each step. In the second stage, a self-escape mechanism or operation is further implemented on the obtained complete routes to prevent the probe-based search from being trapped in a locally optimal solution. The experimental results on a collection of benchmark TSP datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is more effective than other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. In fact, it achieves the best-known TSP benchmark solutions in many datasets, while, in certain cases, it even generates solutions that are better than the best-known TSP benchmark solutions. In this paper, we study the knapsack problem with conflict pair constraints. After a thorough literature survey on the topic, our study focuses on the special case of bipartite conflict graphs. For complete bipartite (multipartite) conflict graphs, the problem is shown to be NP-hard but solvable in pseudo-polynomial time, and it admits an FPTAS. Extensions of these results to more general classes of graphs are also presented. Further, a class of integer programming models for the general knapsack problem with conflict pair constraints is presented, which generalizes and unifies the existing formulations. The strength of the LP relaxations of these formulations is analyzed, and we discuss different ways to tighten them. Experimental comparisons of these models are also presented to assess their relative strengths. This analysis disclosed various strong and weak points of different formulations of the problem and their relationships to different types of problem data. Heterogeneous architecture-based systems-on-chip enable the development of flexible and powerful multifunctional RF systems. In complex and dynamic environments where applications arrive continuously and stochastically, real-time scheduling of multiple applications to appropriate processor resources is crucial for fully utilizing the heterogeneous SoC's resource potential. However, heterogeneous resource-scheduling algorithms still face many problems in practical situations, including generalized abstraction of applications and heterogeneous resources, resource allocation, efficient scheduling of multiple applications in complex mission scenarios, and how to ensure the effectiveness combining with real-world applications of scheduling algorithms. Therefore, in this paper, we design the Multi-Application Scheduling Algorithm, named MASA, which is a two-phase scheduler architecture based on Deep Reinforcement Learning. The algorithm is made up of neural network scheduler-based task prioritization for dynamic encoding of applications and heuristic scheduler-based task mapping for solving the processor resource allocation problem. In order to achieve stable and fast training of the network scheduler based on the actor–critic strategy, we propose optimization methods for the training of MASA: reward dynamic alignment (RDA), earlier termination of the initial episodes, and asynchronous multi-agent training. The performance of the MASA is tested with classic directed acyclic graph and six real-world application datasets, respectively. Experimental results show that MASA outperforms other neural scheduling algorithms and heuristics, and ablation experiments illustrate how these training optimizations improve the network's capacity. The introduction of 5G technologies has enabled the possibility of designing and building several new classes of networked information systems that were previously impossible to implement due to limitations on data throughput or the reliability of transmission channels. Among them, one of the most interesting and successful examples with a highly positive impact in terms of the quality of urban environments and societal and economical welfare is a system of semi-autonomous connected vehicles, where IoT devices, data centers, and fleets of smart vehicles equipped with communication and computational resources are combined into a heterogeneous and distributed infrastructure, unifying hardware, networks, and software. In order to efficiently provide various services (e.g., patrolling, pickup and delivery, monitoring), these systems typically rely on collecting and broadcasting large amounts of data (e.g., sensor data, GPS traces, or maps), which need to be properly collected and processed in a timely manner. As is well documented in the literature, one of the most effective ways to achieve this purpose, especially in a real-time context, is to adopt a graph model of the data (e.g., to model communication networks, roads, or interactions between vehicles) and to employ suitable graph algorithms to solve properly defined computational problems of interest (e.g., shortest paths or distributed consensus). While research in this context has been extensive from a theoretical perspective, works that have focused on the implementation, deployment, and evaluation of the practical performance of graph algorithms for real-world systems of autonomous vehicles have been much rarer. In this paper, we present a study of this kind. Specifically, we first describe the main features of a real-world information system employing semi-autonomous connected vehicles that is currently being tested in the city of L'Aquila (Italy). Then, we present an overview of the computational challenges arising in the considered application domain and provide a systematic survey of known algorithmic results for one of the most relevant classes of computational problems that have to be addressed in said domain, namely, pickup and delivery problems. Finally, we discuss implementation issues, adopted software tools, and the deployment and testing phases concerning one of the algorithmic components of the mentioned real-world system dedicated to handling a specific problem of the above class, namely, the pickup and delivery multi-vehicle problem with time windows. The mathematical side of applied problems in multiple subject areas (biology, pattern recognition, etc.) is reduced to the problem of discrete optimization in the following mathematical method. We were provided a network and graphs in its leaves, for which we needed to find a rearrangement of graphs by non-leaf nodes, in which the given functional reached its minimum. Such a problem, even in the simplest case, is NP-hard, which means unavoidable restrictions on the network, on graphs, or on the functional. In this publication, this problem is addressed in the case of all graphs being so-called "structures", meaning directed-loaded graphs consisting of paths and cycles, and the functional as the sum (over all edges in the network) of distances between structures at the endpoints of every edge. The distance itself is equal to the minimal length of sequence from the fixed list of operations, the composition of which transforms the structure at one endpoint of the edge into the structure at its other endpoint. The list of operations (and their costs) on such a graph is fixed. Under these conditions, the given discrete optimization problem is called the reconstruction problem. This paper presents novel algorithms for solving the reconstruction problem, along with full proofs of their low error and low polynomial complexity. For example, for the network, the problem is solved with a zero error algorithm that has a linear polynomial computational complexity; and for the tree the problem is solved using an algorithm with a multiplicative error of at most two, which has a second order polynomial computational complexity. Outlier detection is of great significance in the domain of data mining. Its task is to find those target points that are not identical to most of the object generation mechanisms. The existing algorithms are mainly divided into density-based algorithms and distance-based algorithms. However, both approaches have some drawbacks. The former struggles to handle low-density modes, while the latter cannot detect local outliers. Moreover, the outlier detection algorithm is very sensitive to parameter settings. This paper proposes a new two-parameter outlier detection (TPOD) algorithm. The method proposed in this paper does not need to manually define the number of neighbors, and the introduction of relative distance can also solve the problem of low density and further accurately detect outliers. This is a combinatorial optimization problem. Firstly, the number of natural neighbors is iteratively calculated, and then the local density of the target object is calculated by adaptive kernel density estimation. Secondly, the relative distance of the target points is computed through natural neighbors. Finally, these two parameters are combined to obtain the outlier factor. This eliminates the influence of parameters that require users to determine the number of outliers themselves, namely, the top-n effect. Two synthetic datasets and 17 real datasets were used to test the effectiveness of this method; a comparison with another five algorithms is also provided. The AUC value and F1 score on multiple datasets are higher than other algorithms, indicating that outliers can be found accurately, which proves that the algorithm is effective. In the scenario of device-free localization under multiple effects, the accuracy of localization based on compressed sensing theory is severely affected. Most existing localization techniques directly ignore multiple path effects. However, it is not practical to ignore the multiple path effect due to its high signal strength, which can provide localization information. In this paper, we formulate the sensing matrix optimization problem in compressed sensing for device-free localization scenarios based on multiple reflections. To solve this problem, we model it as a constrained combinatorial optimization problem and propose a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm. First, smart reflection surfaces and virtual node models are used to construct the desired communication links. Second, we iteratively improve the properties of the measurement matrix by using K-means clustering to obtain reasonable thresholds, and use a meta-heuristic algorithm to optimize the sensing matrix. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently optimizes the sensing matrix and achieves fast and high-precision localization while conserving communication resources. In recent years, metaheuristic methods have shown remarkable efficacy in resolving complex combinatorial challenges across a broad spectrum of fields. Nevertheless, the escalating complexity of these problems necessitates the continuous development of innovative techniques to enhance the performance and reliability of these methods. This paper aims to contribute to this endeavor by examining the impact of solution initialization methods on the performance of a hybrid algorithm applied to the set union knapsack problem (SUKP). Three distinct solution initialization methods, random, greedy, and weighted, have been proposed and evaluated. These have been integrated within a sine cosine algorithm employing k-means as a binarization procedure. Through testing on medium- and large-sized SUKP instances, the study reveals that the solution initialization strategy influences the algorithm's performance, with the weighted method consistently outperforming the other two. The use of optimal control theory for motion planning is a challenging task. Cell mapping offers a way to formulate combinatorial optimization problems, allowing the inclusion of complex cost functions as well as multi-objective optimization problems. This paper presents a suboptimal solution for a trajectory planning problem in a workspace with obstacles, for a differential drive mobile robot. This method relies on the use of any linearization technique that allows the regularization of the combinatorial optimization problem. We explore some classical problems in optimal control, i.e., distance, control effort, and navigation time), as well as the multi-objective optimization problem (MOP). We also performed a comparison with two classical path planning algorithms, namely A ∗ and R R T ∗ , to validate the proposed method when the multi-objective optimization problem includes distance in the cost function, achieving a compromise of less than 2 % for the worst-case scenario for our case study. Hybridized algorithms are commonly employed to improve the performance of any existing method. However, an optimal learning algorithm composed of evolutionary and swarm intelligence can radically improve the quality of the final neuron states and has not received creative attention yet. Considering this issue, this paper presents a novel metaheuristics algorithm combined with several objectives—introduced as the Hybrid Election Algorithm (HEA)—with great results in solving optimization and combinatorial problems over a binary search space. The core and underpinning ideas of this proposed HEA are inspired by socio-political phenomena, consisting of creative and powerful mechanisms to achieve the optimal result. A non-systematic logical structure can find a better phenomenon in the study of logic programming. In this regard, a non-systematic structure known as Random k Satisfiability (RANkSAT) with higher-order is hosted here to overcome the interpretability and dissimilarity compared to a systematic, logical structure in a Discrete Hopfield Neural Network (DHNN). The novelty of this study is to introduce a new multi-objective Hybrid Election Algorithm that achieves the highest fitness value and can boost the storage capacity of DHNN along with a diversified logical structure embedded with RANkSAT representation. To attain such goals, the proposed algorithm tested four different types of algorithms, such as evolutionary types (Genetic Algorithm (GA)), swarm intelligence types (Artificial Bee Colony algorithm), population-based (traditional Election Algorithm (EA)) and the Exhaustive Search (ES) model. To check the performance of the proposed HEA model, several performance metrics, such as training–testing, energy, similarity analysis and statistical analysis, such as the Friedman test with convergence analysis, have been examined and analyzed. The dynamic vehicle routing problem (DVRP) is a variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) in which customers appear dynamically. The objective is to determine a set of routes that minimizes the total travel distance. In this paper, we propose a monarch butterfly optimization (MBO) algorithm to solve DVRPs, utilizing a greedy strategy. Both migration operation and the butterfly adjusting operator only accept the offspring of butterfly individuals that have better fitness than their parents. To improve performance, a later perturbation procedure is implemented, to maintain a balance between global diversification and local intensification. The computational results indicate that the proposed technique outperforms the existing approaches in the literature for average performance by at least 9.38%. In addition, 12 new best solutions were found. This shows that this proposed technique consistently produces high-quality solutions and outperforms other published heuristics for the DVRP. Previous studies on Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) demonstrated the potential to coordinate the behaviors of multiple connected vehicles for traffic improvements. In this paper, we first propose a Conflict Duration Graph-based (CDG-based) coordination framework to resolve collisions and improve the traffic capacity of signal-free intersections. Secondly, a Speed Control-based Intersection Coordination Model (SICM) is developed to identify complex constraints in multi-vehicle collision scenarios. Thirdly, a geometric Translation-based Intersection Coordination Algorithm (TICA) is proposed to calculate the ideal location of time blocks in CDGs and then obtain the near-optimal design speed in the form of combinatorial optimization. Twelve groups of test scenarios with different traffic volumes were designed and tested on a MATLAB-based simulation platform. Simulation results showed that the proposed method can resolve all the collisions and instruct the vehicles to pass signal-free intersections collaboratively without stopping in low to medium level of congestion. In real life, many problems are instances of combinatorial optimization. Cross-functional team selection is one of the typical issues. The decision-maker has to select solutions among ( k h ) solutions in the decision space, where k is the number of all candidates, and h is the number of members in the selected team. This paper is our continuing work since 2018; here, we introduce the completed version of the Min Distance to the Boundary model (MDSB) that allows access to both the "deep" and "wide" aspects of the selected team. The compromise programming approach enables decision-makers to ignore the parameters in the decision-making process. Instead, they point to the one scenario they expect. The aim of model construction focuses on finding the solution that matched the most to the expectation. We develop two algorithms: one is the genetic algorithm and another based on the philosophy of DC programming (DC) and its algorithm (DCA) to find the optimal solution. The Cockroach Swarm Optimization (CSO) algorithm is inspired by cockroach social behavior. It is a simple and efficient meta-heuristic algorithm and has been applied to solve global optimization problems successfully. The original CSO algorithm and its variants operate mainly in continuous search space and cannot solve binary-coded optimization problems directly. Many optimization problems have their decision variables in binary. Binary Cockroach Swarm Optimization (BCSO) is proposed in this paper to tackle such problems and was evaluated on the popular Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), which is considered to be an NP-hard Combinatorial Optimization Problem (COP). A transfer function was employed to map a continuous search space CSO to binary search space. The performance of the proposed algorithm was tested firstly on benchmark functions through simulation studies and compared with the performance of existing binary particle swarm optimization and continuous space versions of CSO. The proposed BCSO was adapted to TSP and applied to a set of benchmark instances of symmetric TSP from the TSP library. The sensor-weapon–target assignment (S-WTA) problem is a crucial decision issue in C4ISR. The cooperative engagement capability (CEC) of sensors and weapons depends on the S-WTA schemes, which can greatly affect the operational effectiveness. In this paper, a mathematical model based on the synthetical framework of the S-WTA problem is established, combining the dependent and independent cooperative engagement modes of sensors and weapons. As this problem is a complex combinatorial optimization problem, a novel genetic algorithm is proposed to improve the solution of this formulated S-WTA model. Based on the prior knowledge of this problem, a problem-specific population initialization method and two novel repair operators are introduced. The performances of the proposed algorithm have been validated on the known benchmarks. Extensive experimental studies compared with three state-of-the-art approaches demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can generate better assignment schemes for the most of the benchmarks. Process planning is a typical combinatorial optimization problem. When the scale of the problem increases, combinatorial explosion occurs, which makes it difficult for traditional precise algorithms to solve the problem. A hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve problems of process planning. A hierarchical coding method including operation layer, machine layer and logic layer is designed in this algorithm. Each layer of coding corresponds to the decision of a sub-problem of process planning. Several genetic operators of the genetic algorithm are designed to replace the update formula of particle position and velocity in the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Operation Sequencing (OS) is one of the most critical tasks in a CAPP system. This process could be modelled as a combinatorial problem where finding a suitable solution within a reasonable time interval is difficult. This work implements a novel Discrete Differential Evolution Algorithm (DDEA) to solve the OS problem, focusing on parts of up to 76 machining operations; the relationships among operations are represented as a directed graph; the contributions of the DDEA are as follows: (1) operates with a discrete representation in the space of feasible solutions; (2) employs mutation and crossover operators to update solutions and to reduce machining and setup costs, (3) possess a local search strategy to achieve better solutions, and (4) integrates a statistical method based on quantiles to measure the quality and likelihood for an achieving a solution. To demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the DDEA, five prismatic parts with different numbers of machining operations as benchmarks to address the OS problem were selected. The results generated the same OS for parts with a few machining operations (up to 23 machining operations). The team orienteering problem (TOP) is a well-studied optimization challenge in the field of Operations Research, where multiple vehicles aim to maximize the total collected rewards within a given time limit by visiting a subset of nodes in a network. With the goal of including dynamic and uncertain conditions inherent in real-world transportation scenarios, we introduce a novel dynamic variant of the TOP that considers real-time changes in environmental conditions affecting reward acquisition at each node. Specifically, we model the dynamic nature of environmental factors—such as traffic congestion, weather conditions, and battery level of each vehicle—to reflect their impact on the probability of obtaining the reward when visiting each type of node in a heterogeneous network. To address this problem, a learnheuristic optimization framework is proposed. It combines a metaheuristic algorithm with Thompson sampling to make informed decisions in dynamic environments. Furthermore, we conduct empirical experiments to assess the impact of varying reward probabilities on resource allocation and route planning within the context of this dynamic TOP, where nodes might offer a different reward behavior depending upon the environmental conditions. Our numerical results indicate that the proposed learnheuristic algorithm outperforms static approaches, achieving up to 25 % better performance in highly dynamic scenarios. Flexible job shop scheduling problem (FJSP), widely prevalent in many intelligent manufacturing industries, is one of the most classic problems of production scheduling and combinatorial optimization. In actual manufacturing enterprises, the setup of machines and the handling of jobs have an important impact on the scheduling plan. Furthermore, there is a trend for a cluster of machines with similar functionalities to form a work center. Considering the above constraints, a new order-driven multi-equipment work center FJSP model with setup and handling including multiple objectives encompassing the minimization of the makespan, the number of machine shutdowns, and the number of handling batches is established. An improved shuffled frog leading algorithm is designed to solve it through the optimization of the initial solution population, the improvement of evolutionary operations, and the incorporation of Pareto sorting. The algorithm also combines the speed calculation method in the gravity search algorithm to enhance the stability of the solution search. Some standard FJSP data benchmarks have been selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, and the experimental results confirm the satisfactory performance of the proposed algorithm. This paper comprehensively reviews the spiral dynamics optimization (SDO) algorithm and investigates its characteristics. SDO algorithm is one of the most straightforward physics-based optimization algorithms and is successfully applied in various broad fields. This paper describes the recent advances of the SDO algorithm, including its adaptive, improved, and hybrid approaches. The growth of the SDO algorithm and its application in various areas, theoretical analysis, and comparison with its preceding and other algorithms are also described in detail. A detailed description of different spiral paths, their characteristics, and the application of these spiral approaches in developing and improving other optimization algorithms are comprehensively presented. The graph bandwidth problem, where one looks for a labeling of graph vertices that gives the minimum difference between the labels over all edges, is a classical NP-hard problem that has drawn a lot of attention in recent decades. In this paper, we focus on the so-called Embed and Project Algorithm (EPA) introduced by Blum et al. in 2000, which in the main part has to solve a semidefinite programming relaxation with exponentially many linear constraints. We present several theoretical properties of this special semidefinite programming problem (SDP) and a cutting-plane-like algorithm to solve it, which works very efficiently in combination with interior-point methods or with the bundle method. Solving combinatorial problems on complex networks represents a primary issue which, on a large scale, requires the use of heuristics and approximate algorithms. Recently, neural methods have been proposed in this context to find feasible solutions for relevant computational problems over graphs. However, such methods have some drawbacks: (1) they use the same neural architecture for different combinatorial problems without introducing customizations that reflects the specificity of each problem; (2) they only use a nodes local information to compute the solution; (3) they do not take advantage of common heuristics or exact algorithms. Following this interest, in this research we address these three main points by designing a customized attention-based mechanism that uses both local and global information from the adjacency matrix to find approximate solutions for the Minimum Vertex Cover Problem. We evaluate our proposal with respect to a fast two-factor approximation algorithm and a widely adopted state-of-the-art heuristic both on synthetically generated instances and on benchmark graphs with different scales. Experimental results demonstrate that, on the one hand, the proposed methodology is able to outperform both the two-factor approximation algorithm and the heuristic on the test datasets, scaling even better than the heuristic with harder instances and, on the other hand, is able to provide a representation of the nodes which reflects the combinatorial structure of the problem. The identifying code problem for a given graph involves finding a minimum subset of vertices such that each vertex of the graph is uniquely specified by its nonempty neighborhood within the identifying code. The combinatorial optimization problem has a wide variety of applications in location and detection schemes. Finding an identifying code of minimum possible size is a difficult task. In fact, it has been proven to be computationally intractable (NP-complete). Therefore, the use of heuristics to provide good approximations in a reasonable amount of time is justified. In this work, we present a new population-based local search algorithm for finding identifying codes of minimum cost. Computational experiments show that the proposed approach was found to be more effective than other state-of-the-art algorithms at generating high-quality solutions in different types of graphs with varying numbers of vertices. This paper presents a methodology to minimize the airspace congestion of aircraft trajectories based on slot allocation techniques. The traffic assignment problem is modeled as a combinatorial optimization problem for which a selective simulated annealing has been developed. Based on the congestion encountered by each aircraft in the airspace, this metaheuristic selects and changes the time of departure of the most critical flights in order to target the most relevant aircraft. The integration of different energy resources from traditional power systems presents new challenges for real-time implementation and operation. In the last decade, a way has been sought to optimize the operation of small microgrids (SMGs) that have a great variety of energy sources (PV (photovoltaic) prosumers, Genset CHP (combined heat and power), etc.) with uncertainty in energy production that results in different market prices. For this reason, metaheuristic methods have been used to optimize the decision-making process for multiple players in local and external markets. Players in this network include nine agents: three consumers, three prosumers (consumers with PV capabilities), and three CHP generators. This article deploys metaheuristic algorithms with the objective of maximizing power market transactions and clearing price. Since metaheuristic optimization algorithms do not guarantee global optima, an exhaustive search is deployed to find global optima points. The exhaustive search algorithm is implemented using a parallel computing architecture to reach feasible results in a short amount of time. The global optimal result is used as an indicator to evaluate the performance of the different metaheuristic algorithms. In an electrical safe microenvironment, all kinds of electrical appliances can be operated safely to ensure the safety of life and property. The significance of safety hazard factors detection is to detect safety hazards in advance, to remind the administrators to exclude risk, to reduce the unnecessary loss, and to ensure that the electrical operation is healthy and orderly before the occurrence of accidents. In this paper, batteries are selected as the primary research subject of safety detection because batteries are used more and more in the Internet of Things (IOT), and they often cause fire in the process of discharging and charging. The existing algorithms need to be embedded into the specialized sensor for each important electrical appliance. However, they are limited by the actual deployment, so it is extremely difficult to spread widely. According to the opinions above, an improved load disaggregation algorithm based on dictionary learning and sparse coding with optimal dictionary matrix period is proposed to detect potential safety hazards of battery loads. For safety-related electrical applications, doing so can increase interpretability. Through experiments, we test this algorithm on the REDD dataset, and compare it with the baseline algorithms (combinatorial optimization, factorial hidden Markov model, basic discriminative dictionary sparse coding algorithm) to achieve a degree of trust. There are various situations in which real-world problems can be modeled and solved as minimum flow problems. Sometimes, in these situations, minor data changes may occur, leading to corresponding changes of the networks in which the practical problems are modeled as flow problems, such as slight variations in capacity or lower bound. For instance, the capacity or the lower bound of an arc may increase or decrease in time, leaving one with no other choice than finding the new minimum network flow. Given both the various ways in which the networks can be changed and the high frequency of these changes, it is desirable to find as fast a computation method for minimum flow as possible. This paper is focused on the cases that concern increasing and decreasing the capacity or the lower bound of an arc. For these cases, both the minimum flow algorithms and the dynamic minimum flow algorithms that are already known are inefficient. Our incremental algorithms for determining minimum flow in the modified network are more efficient than both the above-mentioned types of algorithms. The proposed method starts from the initial network minimum flow and solves the minimum flow problem in a significantly faster way than recalculating the new network minimum flow starting from scratch. In recent years, to infer phylogenies, which are NP-hard problems, more and more research has focused on using metaheuristics. Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood are two effective ways to conduct inference. Based on these methods, which can also be considered as the optimal criteria for phylogenies, various kinds of multi-objective metaheuristics have been used to reconstruct phylogenies. However, combining these two time-consuming methods results in those multi-objective metaheuristics being slower than a single objective. Therefore, we propose a novel, multi-objective optimization algorithm, MOEA-RC, to accelerate the processes of rebuilding phylogenies using structural information of elites in current populations. We compare MOEA-RC with two representative multi-objective algorithms, MOEA/D and NAGA-II, and a non-consensus version of MOEA-RC on three real-world datasets. In this paper, we present a hybrid genetic-hierarchical algorithm for the solution of the quadratic assignment problem. The main distinguishing aspect of the proposed algorithm is that this is an innovative hybrid genetic algorithm with the original, hierarchical architecture. In particular, the genetic algorithm is combined with the so-called hierarchical (self-similar) iterated tabu search algorithm, which serves as a powerful local optimizer (local improvement algorithm) of the offspring solutions produced by the crossover operator of the genetic algorithm. This paper addresses the problem of the locating and sizing of distributed generators (DGs) in direct current (DC) grids and proposes a hybrid methodology based on a parallel version of the Population-Based Incremental Learning (PPBIL) algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method. The objective function of the method is based on the reduction of the power loss by using a master-slave structure and the consideration of the set of restrictions associated with DC grids in a distributed generation environment. In such a structure, the master stage (PPBIL) finds the location of the generators and the slave stage (PSO) finds the corresponding sizes. For the purpose of comparison, eight additional hybrid methods were formed by using two additional location methods and two additional sizing methods, and this helped in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the proposed solution. Such an evaluation is illustrated with the electrical test systems composed of 10, 21 and 69 buses and simulated on the software, MATLAB. This article addresses the problem of converting a single-objective combinatorial problem into a multi-objective one using the Pareto front approach. Although existing algorithms can identify the optimal solution in a multi-objective space, they fail to satisfy constraints while achieving optimal performance. To address this issue, we propose a multi-objective artificial bee colony optimization algorithm with a classical multi-objective theme called fitness sharing. This approach helps the convergence of the Pareto solution set towards a single optimal solution that satisfies multiple objectives. This article introduces multi-objective optimization with an example of a non-dominated sequencing technique and fitness sharing approach. The experimentation is carried out in MATLAB 2018a. In addition, we applied the proposed algorithm to two different real-time datasets, namely the knapsack problem and the nurse scheduling problem (NSP). The outcome of the proposed MBABC-NM algorithm is evaluated using standard performance indicators such as average distance, number of reference solutions (NRS), overall count of attained solutions (TNS), and overall non-dominated generation volume (ONGV). In the algorithm selection problem, where the task is to identify the most suitable solving technique for a particular situation, most methods used as performance mapping mechanisms have been relatively simple models such as logistic regression or neural networks. In the latter case, most implementations tend to have a shallow and straightforward architecture and, thus, exhibit a limited ability to extract relevant patterns. This research explores the use of attention-based neural networks as meta-learners to improve the performance mapping mechanism in the algorithm selection problem and fully take advantage of the model's capabilities for pattern extraction. We compare the proposed use of an attention-based meta-learner method as a performance mapping mechanism against five models from the literature: multi-layer perceptron, k-nearest neighbors, softmax regression, support vector machines, and decision trees. We used a meta-data dataset obtained by solving the vehicle routing problem with time window (VRPTW) instances contained in the Solomon benchmark with three different configurations of the simulated annealing meta-heuristic for testing purposes. Overall, the attention-based meta-learner model yields better results when compared to the other benchmark methods in consistently selecting the algorithm that best solves a given VRPTW instance. Moreover, by significantly outperforming the multi-layer perceptron, our findings suggest promising potential in exploring more recent and novel advancements in neural network architectures. With wearable sensors, the acquisition of physiological signals has become affordable and feasible in everyday life. Specifically, Photoplethysmography (PPG), being a low-cost and highly portable technology, has attracted notable interest for measuring and diagnosing cardiac activity, one of the most important physiological and autonomic indicators. In addition to the technological development, several specific signal-processing algorithms have been designed to enable reliable detection of heartbeats and cope with the lower quality of the signals. In this study, we compare three heartbeat detection algorithms: Derivative-Based Detection (DBD), Recursive Combinatorial Optimization (RCO), and Multi-Scale Peak and Trough Detection (MSPTD). In particular, we considered signals from two datasets, namely, the PPG-DALIA dataset (N = 15) and the FANTASIA dataset (N = 20) which differ in terms of signal characteristics (sampling frequency and length) and type of acquisition devices (wearable and medical-grade). The comparison is performed both in terms of heartbeat detection performance and computational workload required to execute the algorithms. Finally, we explore the applicability of these algorithms on the cardiac component obtained from functional Near InfraRed Spectroscopy signals (fNIRS).The results indicate that, while the MSPTD algorithm achieves a higher F1 score in cases that involve body movements, such as cycling (MSPTD: Mean = 74.7, SD = 14.4; DBD: Mean = 54.4, SD = 21.0; DBD + RCO: Mean = 49.5, SD = 22.9) and walking up and down the stairs (MSPTD: Mean = 62.9, SD = 12.2; DBD: Mean = 50.5, SD = 11.9; DBD + RCO: Mean = 45.0, SD = 14.0), for all other activities the three algorithms perform similarly. In terms of computational complexity, the computation time of the MSPTD algorithm appears to grow exponentially with the signal sampling frequency, thus requiring longer computation times in the case of high-sampling frequency signals, where the usage of the DBD and RCO algorithms might be preferable. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has drawn increasing attention in recent years, especially in executing tasks such as natural disaster rescue and detection, and battlefield cooperative operations. Task assignment and path planning for multiple UAVs in the above scenarios are essential for successful mission execution. But, effectively balancing tasks to better excavate the potential of UAVs remains a challenge, as well as efficiently generating feasible solutions from the current one in constrained explosive solution spaces with the increase in the scale of optimization problems. This paper proposes an efficient approach for task assignment and path planning with the objective of balancing the tasks among UAVs and achieving satisfactory temporal resolutions. To be specific, we add virtual nodes according to the number of UAVs to the original model of the vehicle routing problem (VRP), thus make it easier to form a solution suitable for heuristic algorithms. Besides, the concept of the universal distance matrix is proposed to transform the temporal constraints to spatial constraints and simplify the programming model. Then, a Swap-and-Judge Simulated Annealing (SJSA) algorithm is therefore proposed to improve the efficiency of generating feasible neighboring solutions. Extensive experimental and comparative studies on different scenarios demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm compared with the exact algorithm and meta-heuristic algorithms. In this paper, we study the problem of developing new combinatorial generation algorithms. The main purpose of our research is to derive and improve general methods for developing combinatorial generation algorithms. We present basic general methods for solving this task and consider one of these methods, which is based on AND/OR trees. This method is extended by using the mathematical apparatus of the theory of generating functions since it is one of the basic approaches in combinatorics (we propose to use the method of compositae for obtaining explicit expression of the coefficients of generating functions). As a result, we also apply this method and develop new ranking and unranking algorithms for the following combinatorial sets: permutations, permutations with ascents, combinations, Dyck paths with return steps, labeled Dyck paths with ascents on return steps. For each of them, we construct an AND/OR tree structure, find a bijection between the elements of the combinatorial set and the set of variants of the AND/OR tree, and develop algorithms for ranking and unranking the variants of the AND/OR tree. Zero-one quadratic programming is a classical combinatorial optimization problem that has many real-world applications. However, it is well known that zero-one quadratic programming is non-deterministic polynomial-hard (NP-hard) in general. On one hand, the exact solution algorithms that can guarantee the global optimum are very time consuming. And on the other hand, the heuristic algorithms that generate the solution quickly can only provide local optimum. Due to this reason, identifying polynomially solvable subclasses of zero-one quadratic programming problems and their corresponding algorithms is a promising way to not only compromise these two sides but also offer theoretical insight into the complicated nature of the problem. By combining the basic algorithm and dynamic programming method, we propose an effective algorithm in this paper to solve the general linearly constrained zero-one quadratic programming problem with a k-diagonal matrix. In our algorithm, the value of k is changeable that covers different subclasses of the problem. The theoretical analysis and experimental results reveal that our proposed algorithm is reasonably effective and efficient. In addition, the placement of the phasor measurement units problem in the power system is adopted as an example to illustrate the potential real-world applications of this algorithm. The quadratic minimum spanning tree problem (QMSTP) is a spanning tree optimization problem that considers the interaction cost between pairs of edges arising from a number of practical scenarios. This problem is NP-hard, and therefore there is not a known polynomial time approach to solve it. To find a close-to-optimal solution to the problem in a reasonable time, we present for the first time a clustering-enhanced memetic algorithm (CMA) that combines four components, i.e., (i) population initialization with clustering mechanism, (ii) a tabu-based nearby exploration phase to search nearby local optima in a restricted area, (iii) a three-parent combination operator to generate promising offspring solutions, and (iv) a mutation operator using Lévy distribution to prevent the population from premature. Computational experiments are carried on 36 benchmark instances from 3 standard sets, and the results show that the proposed algorithm is competitive with the state-of-the-art approaches. In particular, it reports improved upper bounds for the 25 most challenging instances with unproven optimal solutions, while matching the best-known results for all but 2 of the remaining instances. The integrated scheduling problem is a classical combinatorial optimization problem. The existing integrated scheduling algorithms generally adopt the short-time scheduling strategy that does not fully consider the impact of the degree of process parallelism on scheduling results. In order to further optimize the total processing time of a product and the utilization rate of a device, an integrated scheduling algorithm based on a process end time-driven and the long-time scheduling strategy is proposed. The proposed integrated scheduling algorithm sets up a separate candidate process queue for each device and determines the scheduling order for each scheduling queue on the premise of satisfying the constraint conditions of the process tree. Driven by the process end time, the algorithm finds schedulable processes for each device. If the schedulable process is unique, it is scheduled. Otherwise, if the schedulable process is not unique, the process with long-path and long-time is scheduled. In particular, the scheduling strategies of the scheduling queues of different devices are symmetric, and the constraint relationships between the processes in different queues are asymmetric. The case analysis results show that the proposed integrated scheduling algorithm is better than some existing algorithms in terms of the total processing time of a product and the average utilization rate of devices. The triple-frequency linear combination method can provide combinations with different characteristics and is one of the important methods to improve the performance of navigation services. Due to the large number of combinations and different combination performances, combinatorial clustering optimization is very important, and the efficiency of manual screening is very low. Firstly, based on the basic model, the objective equations are derived. Secondly, based on the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm, three improved PSO-FCM algorithms are proposed, namely the S-PSO-FCM algorithm, L-PSO-FCM algorithm, and LOG-PSO-FCM algorithm. Thirdly, according to the different combination characteristics, the two datasets whose combined coefficients sum to 0 and 1 are emphatically discussed. Finally, the effectiveness of the improved PSO-FCM algorithms is studied based on the public dataset and the measured BeiDou-3 navigation satellite system (BDS-3) data of short baseline, long baseline, and ultra-long baseline. The subject of the study was an application of nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms to node configuration optimization in optical networks. The main objective of the optimization was to minimize capital expenditure, which includes the costs of optical node resources, such as transponders and amplifiers used in a new generation of optical networks. For this purpose a model that takes into account the physical phenomena in the optical network is proposed. Selected nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms were implemented and compared with a reference, deterministic algorithm, based on linear integer programming. For the cases studied the obtained results show that there is a large advantage in using metaheuristic algorithms. In particular, the evolutionary algorithm, the bees algorithm and the harmony search algorithm showed superior performance for the considered data-sets corresponding to large optical networks; the integer programming-based algorithm failed to find an acceptable sub-optimal solution within the assumed maximum computational time. All optimization methods were compared for selected instances of realistic teletransmission networks of different dimensions subject to traffic demand sets extracted from real traffic data. This article aims to bring quantum computing to robotics. A quantum algorithm is developed to minimize the distance traveled in warehouses and distribution centers where order picking is applied. For this, a proof of concept is proposed through a Raspberry Pi 4, generating a quantum combinatorial optimization algorithm that saves the distance travelled and the batch of orders to be made. In case of computational need, the robot will be able to parallelize part of the operations in hybrid computing (quantum + classical), accessing CPUs and QPUs distributed in a public or private cloud. We developed a stable environment (ARM64) inside the robot (Raspberry) to run gradient operations and other quantum algorithms on IBMQ, Amazon Braket (D-Wave), and Pennylane locally or remotely. The proof of concept, when run in the above stated quantum environments, showed the execution time of our algorithm with different public access simulators on the market, computational results of our picking and batching algorithm, and analyze the quantum real-time execution. Our findings are that the behavior of the Amazon Braket D-Wave is better than Gate-based Quantum Computing over 20 qubits, and that AWS-Braket has better time performance than Qiskit or Pennylane. An automated NMR chemical shift assignment algorithm was developed using multi-objective optimization techniques. The problem is modeled as a combinatorial optimization problem and its objective parameters are defined separately in different score functions. Some of the heuristic approaches of evolutionary optimization are employed in this problem model. Both, a conventional genetic algorithm and multi-objective methods, i.e., the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms II and III (NSGA2 and NSGA3), are applied to the problem. The multi-objective approaches consider each objective parameter separately, whereas the genetic algorithm followed a conventional way, where all objectives are combined in one score function. Several improvement steps and repetitions on these algorithms are performed and their combinations are also created as a hyper-heuristic approach to the problem. Additionally, a hill-climbing algorithm is also applied after the evolutionary algorithm steps. The algorithms are tested on several different datasets with a set of 11 commonly used spectra. The test results showed that our algorithm could assign both sidechain and backbone atoms fully automatically without any manual interactions. Let G = (V , E) be an undirected graph with vertex set V and edge set E. A clique C of G is a subset of the vertices of V with every pair of vertices of C adjacent. A maximum clique is a clique with the maximum number of vertices. A tabu search algorithm for the maximum clique problem that uses an exact algorithm on subproblems is presented. The exact algorithm uses a graph coloring upper bound for pruning, and the best such algorithm to use in this context is considered. The final tabu search algorithm successfully finds the optimal or best known solution for all standard benchmarks considered. It is compared with a state-of-the-art algorithm that does not use exact search. It is not uncommon for today's problems to fall within the scope of the well-known class of NP-Hard problems. These problems generally do not have an analytical solution, and it is necessary to use meta-heuristics to solve them. The Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP) is one of these problems, and for its solution, techniques based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) form the most common approach used in the literature. However, GAs are easily compromised by premature convergence and can be trapped in a local optima. To address these issues, researchers have been developing new methodologies based on local search schemes and improvements to standard mutation and crossover operators. In this work, we propose a new GA within this line of research. In detail, we generalize the concept of a massive local search operator; we improved the use of a local search strategy in the traditional mutation operator; and we developed a new multi-crossover operator. In this way, all operators of the proposed algorithm have local search functionality beyond their original inspirations and characteristics. Our method is evaluated in three different case studies, comprising 58 instances of literature, which prove the effectiveness of our approach compared to traditional JSSP solution methods. The minimum weight vertex independent dominating set (MWVIDS) problem is an important version of the minimum independent dominating set. The MWVIDS problem has a number of applications in many fields. However, the MWVIDS problem is known to be NP-hard and thus computationally challenging. In this work, we present the improved memetic algorithm called MSSAS for solving the MWVIDS problem. The proposed MSSAS algorithm combines probability-based dynamic optimization (PDO) (to generate good and diverse offspring solutions by assembling elements of existing good solutions) as well as a local search phase named C_LS (to seek high-quality local optima by combining the idea of constrained-based two-level configuration checking strategy and tabu mechanism). The extensive results on popular DIMACS and BHOLIB benchmarks demonstrate that MSSAS competes favorably with the state-of-the-art algorithms. In addition, we analyze the benefits of the newly raised components including two above proposed ideas with our memetic framework. The core–periphery structure is one of the key concepts in the structural analysis of complex networks. It consists of a partitioning of the node set of a given graph or network into two groups, called core and periphery, where the core nodes induce a well-connected subgraph and share connections with peripheral nodes, while the peripheral nodes are loosely connected to the core nodes and other peripheral nodes. We propose a polynomial-time algorithm to detect core–periphery structures in networks having a symmetric adjacency matrix. The core set is defined as the solution of a combinatorial optimization problem, which has a pleasant symmetry with respect to graph complementation. We provide a complete description of the optimal solutions to that problem and an exact and efficient algorithm to compute them. The proposed approach is extended to networks with loops and oriented edges. In this work we show how to use a quantum adiabatic algorithm to solve multiobjective optimization problems. For the first time, we demonstrate a theorem proving that the quantum adiabatic algorithm can find Pareto-optimal solutions in finite-time, provided some restrictions to the problem are met. A numerical example illustrates an application of the theorem to a well-known problem in multiobjective optimization.
