Aim: Studies of the effects of COVID‐19, especially post‐acute COVID‐19 syndrome, on psychological health in non‐severe cases are limited. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated risk factors of psychological symptoms, and quality‐of‐life in three groups of outpatients, hospitalized and intensive care patients. Methods: A total 276 patients, previously confirmed with SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, attending the COVID‐19 follow‐up outpatient clinic from December 2020 to July 2021 were interviewed face‐to‐face. In this cross‐sectional, retrospective study, all participants were asked our self‐designed demographic and screening questions to assess their psychological symptoms and administered the WHQOOL‐BREF survey to evaluate quality of life. Results: In screening questions, major depressive disorder symptoms were detected at a rate of 20.3%, generalized anxiety disorder symptoms at a rate of 16.7%, panic attack symptoms at a rate of 10.9%, post‐traumatic stress disorder symptoms at a rate of 28.6% and obsessive‐compulsive disorder symptoms at a rate of 18.1%. The outpatient group with COVID‐19 infection had a higher risk of developing psychological symptoms and decreased quality of life. Conclusion: COVID‐19 infection was found to have a considerable psychological impact on those treated as outpatients despite the less severe course of their illness. Post‐intensive care syndrome affects physical, cognitive and psychological health.It is associated with symptoms such as generalized weakness, memory disturbances, cognitive function impairment, depression, anxiety and post‐traumatic stress disorder.Some physical and psychological symptoms persist for over 12 weeks in some patients and have been classified as 'Post‐acute COVID‐19 Condition or Syndrome' (PCS). At the post‐acute‐COVID‐19 period, a considerable number of outpatients with COVID‐19 infection were at higher risk for psychological distress symptoms than those who had been treated in the hospital or intensive care unit.Depression, anxiety, panic disorder and PTSD symptoms were found to be higher in outpatients and those with these symptoms were also shown to have a lower quality of life.Our findings highlight the significant psychological impact of COVID‐19 on patients, even after their reported recovery from the acute manifestations of this disease. Aims: This study aims to examine the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and identify predictors of anxiety among pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners and explore the mediating role of marital satisfaction between maternal and paternal anxiety. Design: A cross‐sectional study was conducted in Guangzhou, China, from July 2021 to May 2022. Methods: A total of 306 dyads of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners completed the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, Locke–Wallace Marital Adjustment Test and the socio‐demographic and clinical data sheet. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 32.4% and 36.6% in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners, respectively. The predictors of maternal anxiety were paternal anxiety, maternal marital satisfaction, maternal monthly salary, fasting glucose value and 1‐h glucose value. By contrast, the predictors of paternal anxiety were maternal anxiety, paternal marital satisfaction and paternal monthly salary. Moreover, the relationship between maternal and paternal anxiety was mediated by marital satisfaction. Conclusions: The anxiety symptoms of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners influence each other, and this relationship was mediated by marital satisfaction. Every couple should be screened for anxiety symptoms and treated as a team rather than focusing solely on the pregnant woman. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aims: To evaluate the mental well‐being of people undergoing and working in a supervised COVID‐19 quarantine facility. Method: Mixed methodology was used, including a cross‐sectional analysis of psychological distress (DASS‐21) and individual semi‐structured interviews (10 professionals maintaining quarantine and 10 quarantined persons). Results: Overall levels of psychological distress were low. Those quarantining from Victoria had significantly lower depression scores compared to all other departure points. Qualitative analysis identified distress being linked to a lack of control, isolation and miscommunication. Discussion: Quarantine was associated with low levels of psychological distress. This was lower in people travelling from Victoria, a state where there were higher rates of infections and restrictions. Interviews showed that psychological distress was conceptualized as being associated with supervised quarantine, but participants recognized the overall importance of quarantine. Implications for Practice: Mental health professionals supporting quarantined people should consider original departure points may predict levels of psychological distress. Implementing ways of gaining control through affording choice, improving communication channels and establishing peer support networks within quarantine settings may help maintain mental well‐being. Aims: To perform temporal validation of a risk prediction model for breast cancer‐related lymphoedema in the European population. Design: Temporal validation of a previously developed prediction model using a new retrospective cohort of women who had undergone axillary lymph node dissection between June 2018 and June 2020. Methods: We reviewed clinical records to identify women who did and did not develop lymphoedema within 2 years of surgery and to gather data regarding the variables included in the prediction model. The model was calibrated by calculating Spearman's correlation between observed and expected cases. Its accuracy in discriminating between patients who did versus did not develop lymphoedema was assessed by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: The validation cohort comprised 154 women, 41 of whom developed lymphoedema within 2 years of surgery. The value of Spearman's coefficient indicated a strong correlation between observed and expected cases. Sensitivity of the model was higher than in the derivation cohort, as was the value of the AUC. Conclusion: The model shows a good capacity to discriminate women at risk of lymphoedema and may therefore help in developing improved care pathways for individual patients. Aim: This study examined the feasibility of integrating actigraphy devices into orthopaedic surgical settings to assess the concurrent validity between objective actigraphy data and PROMIS measures. Additionally, the association between changes in actigraphy data and longitudinal changes in PROMIS measures was examined. Methods: Data were collected from 17 participants using actigraphy devices the week prior to and after orthopaedic surgery from 02/2019 to 03/2020. Participants completed PROMIS measures (Physical Function, Sleep Disturbance, Pain Interference) preoperatively and up to 6 months postoperatively. Nonparametric correlations (rs) assessed for concurrent validity. Linear mixed‐effects models examined the association between changes in actigraphy data and PROMIS measures. Results: Prolonged wake after sleep onset was associated with increased sleep disturbances (rs = 0.49; p = 0.045) and pain interference (rs = 0.51; p = 0.04). Changes in pain interference were correlated with increased awakenings (rs = 0.54; p = 0.03). Increased wake after sleep onset was associated with worsening sleep disturbance (β = 0.12; p = 0.01) and pain interference scores over the postoperative period (β = 0.12; p = 0.02). Conclusions: This study is among the first to examine changes in objective actigraphy data and longitudinal PROMIS measures following orthopaedic surgery and illustrates the feasibility of incorporating actigraphy into surgical settings to evaluate postoperative recovery. Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of professional values of nurses on their attitudes towards caregiving roles. Methods: This is a cross‐sectional, correlational and descriptive study. The data were collected from 319 nurses working at different units in a public hospital between January and May 2019. The data collection tool included a 10‐question participant information form, the nursing professional values scale and the attitude scale for nurses in caregiving roles. The variables were analysed using the multiple linear regression. Results: The nurses had professional values and attitudes towards caregiving roles at high levels. Significant differences were found in the overall scales and their subscales especially due to nurses loving their profession (P < 0.05). Attitudes of the nurses towards caregiving roles were predicted by human dignity (β = 0.52, P < 0.01), action (β = 0.34, P < 0.01) and autonomy (β = −0.29, P < 0.01). Human dignity, action and autonomy accounted for 30% of the variance in their attitudes towards caregiving roles (∆R2 = 0.30). Conclusion: Scores obtained by the nurses loving their profession from the nursing professional values scale and the attitude scale for nurses in caregiving roles were higher. In addition, nurses' caregiving roles were explained with professional values. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Professional values are the primary source of nursing practices and guide the interaction of nurses with patients, colleagues and society.Acquiring professional values enhances the quality of care.Caregiving is the oldest role of nurses forming the basis of both their traditional practices and modern nursing roles.Effectively performing the caregiving roles by nurses increases the quality of healthcare, job satisfaction and performance. Aim: The awareness for the need for end‐of‐life care has increased among noncancer patients. However, studies on the topic have rarely targeted the needs of noncancer patients who want to die at home. This study assessed the end‐of‐life care needs of noncancer patients who were receiving care and wanted to die at home. Methods: A cross‐sectional study design was used and involved 200 participants who were diagnosed as noncancer patients and receiving home care nursing. Data were collected on demographics, disease, Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) scores, and end‐of‐life care needs, in April and May, 2016. Results: Among the six areas of care, "supporting fundamental needs" of patients required the most care, followed by "coordination among family or relatives." Multivariate analysis revealed that the duration of home care nursing held a significant association with end‐of‐life care needs. Conclusion: By reflecting on the comprehensive care needs of patients with chronic illnesses and including them in the care process, it will be possible to provide better quality palliative care to patients at home in the end‐of‐life stages. Evidence suggests that burnout can lead to reduced productivity and reduced quality of care for patients. Mindfulness‐based interventions (MBIs) have demonstrated effectiveness in mitigating burnout for healthcare professionals. What the paper adds to existing knowledge: This paper reinforces the positive outcomes within the current literature that MBIs can help reduce burnout amongst mental healthcare professionals. The strength of the paper is that it reports significant correlations between decreased burnout following an increase in mindfulness. No previous research has examined this area and this is the first study to do so. The participants within this study demonstrated increased personal accomplishment and decreased emotional exhaustion following an 8‐week MBCT course which was maintained at 6‐month follow‐up. Participants completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Friedberg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI) at pre, post and 6‐month follow‐up. Results: Analysis revealed overall significance and large effect sizes on all three subscales of the MBI and the FMI. There were significant correlations in mindfulness when burnout was reduced. Discussion: These results suggest that MBCT groups for healthcare professionals offer a promising intervention for reducing burnout. Aims and objectives: To analyse nursing students' perceptions of the clinical learning environment and supervision and the connection between their satisfaction and intention of staying in their placement hospitals. Background: Global nursing shortage necessitates strategies for the recruitment and retention of nurses. It is believed that nursing students' clinical placement experiences can affect their learning outcomes, as well as influence their choice of future workplace. Design: Cross‐sectional, correlational study. Methods: One hundred and eighty nursing students participated in the study. The data were collected in person using The Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher scale tool. Students' satisfaction with the clinical learning environment and learning process was measured using a 4‐point Likert scale developed by the researchers. The STROBE checklist was used in this paper. Results: Nursing students perceived a favourable clinical learning environment and supervision in the hospitals where they undertook clinical placements, recording high levels of satisfaction and high levels of intention to stay and work there. The clinical learning environment and supervision established positive correlations with student satisfaction. Conclusions: This study promotes the development of knowledge and understanding of how student satisfaction and intention to stay and work in their placement hospitals relates to the quality of the clinical learning environment and supervision, which could be helpful to the management of healthcare facilities and faculties in improving nursing education and retention/recruitment strategies. Relevance to clinical practice: Nursing students represent the future of the nursing workforce, so managers of healthcare facilities and faculties should move towards promoting a clinical learning and supervisory environment where supervisors, tutors and staff are aware of their commitment to student education and promote optimal learning and positive experiences in order for students to feel satisfied and motivated to work in their placement hospitals. What is known on the subject?Distress screening amongst FGs is emphasized in worldwide studies, but existing general tools were found time‐consuming and sometimes inconvenient when using them amongst FGs of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.The DT, a single‐item scale, was widely used to detect distress amongst FGs of cancer patients, showing good reliability, validity and discrimination power.The 21‐item Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS21) can identify distress in the general population and serve as a criterion to determine an optimal cut‐off score of the DT. What does the paper add to existing knowledge?: The DT presented good reliability, validity and discriminatory power amongst FGs of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. A cut‐off score of six maximized sensitivity (77%) and specificity (76%). Over half of the FGs of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia reached this cut‐off score and experienced significant distress. Distress was higher in FGs of male patients, when FGs were parents, and for FGs whose educational background was primary school or below. What are the implications for practice?: The DT is an effective alternative to existing instruments in identifying distressed FGs of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. It is important to provide FGs with distress screening programmes and interventions (e.g. skill‐building psychoeducation) to identify and relieve distress. Aims: It is extremely important to determine the relationship between COPD and self‐management (SM) in the disease process. However, the impact of symptom management (SpM) on this relationship is still unclear. The study aimed to examine the mediating role of SpM in the effect of the COPD stage on SM. Design: A predictive correlational study was reported following the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Methods: This study was conducted between 15 February 2023 and 15 June 15 2023, with 306 patients. Data were collected using the Symptom Management Scale for Self‐Efficacy and the Chronic Disease Self‐Management Scale. Descriptive statistics and Process Macro Model 4 in the SPSS program were used for data analysis. Results: Most of the patients were in the moderate stage of COPD; their SM scores were at low levels; SpM scores were at moderate levels. The model was significant, and the variables explained 65% of the model. The COPD stage was significantly positively correlated with SpM and negatively correlated with SM. There was a significant positive impact between SpM and SM. The positive and significant standardised indirect effect of SpM on SM evidenced a full mediating effect. Conclusions: Symptom management has a full mediating role in the effect of the COPD stage on SM. It was revealed that the level of SM can be increased by achieving SpM. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Symptoms are vital in COPD. Progression of COPD increases symptom severity. Being successful in SpM greatly contributes to the achievement of self‐management. Therefore, nurses should definitely consider symptom control in strengthening self‐management in the care of patients with COPD. Aims: To explore the association between nurse managers' paternalistic leadership and nurses' perceived workplace bullying (WPB), as well as to examine the mediating role of organizational climate in this association. Background: There is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the relationship between nurse managers' paternalistic leadership, organizational climate and nurses' perceived WPB. Clarifying this relationship is crucial to understand how paternalistic leadership influences WPB and for nursing managers to seek organizational‐level solutions to prevent it. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey was performed from 4 January to 10 February 2022, in six tertiary hospitals in mainland China. Demographic information, Paternalistic Leadership Scale, Organizational Climate Scale and Negative Acts Questionnaire‐Revised were used in the survey. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analyses and a structural equation model were used for data analysis. Results: A total of 5093 valid questionnaires were collected. Moral leadership and authoritarian leadership have both direct and indirect effects on WPB through the mediating effect of organizational climate. The former is negatively related to WPB and the latter is positively related to WPB. Benevolent leadership was only negatively associated with WPB via the mediating effect of organizational climate. Conclusion: The three components of paternalistic leadership have different effects on WPB through the mediating effect of organizational climate. Nurse managers are recommended to strengthen moral leadership, balance benevolent leadership, reduce authoritarian leadership and strive to create a positive organizational climate in their efforts to mitigate WPB among nurses. Impact: This study enhanced our comprehension of the relationship between different leadership styles and WPB. Greater emphasis should be placed on moral leadership in the promotion of nursing managers and nursing leadership training programs. What are the implications for practice?: Nursing staff who experience (physical) aggression should be carefully monitored and should receive social support from their management to aid their well‐being. Contrary to intuition, nurses who reported a higher number of stress management skills might have to be monitored more closely if necessary. Introduction: Aggressive behaviour of forensic clients is associated with burnout symptoms in nursing staff. The role of staff characteristics as moderators is unclear. Aim: We explored the association between type and severity of aggressive behaviour as experienced by nursing staff and staff's burnout symptoms. In addition, the moderating roles of personality characteristics and emotional intelligence (EI) were studied. Moreover, the usefulness of ambulatory skin conductance assessments in detecting arousal related to burnout symptoms was studied. Method: A total of 114 forensic nursing staff members filled out questionnaires and wore an ambulatory device. Results: Experiencing physical aggression was positively associated with staff's burnout symptoms. Stress management skills, a subscale of EI, but not personality, moderated this relationship. Skin conductance was not associated with burnout symptoms. Remarkably, the association between aggression and burnout symptoms was highest for staff reporting a higher number of stress management skills. Discussion: Longitudinal research is necessary to establish causality between client aggression and staff burnout symptoms. In addition, further research is necessary on the validity of the aggression measure used in the current study. Implication for practice: Nursing staff who experience physical aggression frequently should receive social support for this, and staff who report high stress management skills should be monitored more carefully after having been confronted with aggression. Objective: A systematic review and meta‐analysis was performed to identify the factors related to cancer death anxiety based on available evidence. Design: This systematic review and meta‐analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Methods: Seven databases were searched to identify studies on the relationships of cancer death anxiety with demographic characteristics, disease factors and psychosocial factors from inception to May 2023. The Agency for Medical Research and Quality (AHRQ) scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. After two researchers independently completed the literature search, data extraction and quality evaluation, meta‐analysis was conducted by using RevMan5.3 and Stata 17.0 software. Results: In total, 52 studies were included in this review. The results revealed that there were positive correlations of death anxiety with female sex, the symptom burden, anxiety levels, depression levels, fear of recurrence, attachment avoidance, psychological distress, resignation and confrontation coping. Death anxiety was negatively correlated with age, education level, ability to perform daily activities, self‐esteem, spiritual well‐being, sense of meaning in life, resilience, quality of life, social support and religious beliefs. Conclusions: Our results can inform the design of interventions to address death anxiety and improve the overall quality of life of cancer patients. Healthcare professionals should promptly identify and focus on death anxiety in high‐risk populations of cancer patients. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Cancer patients commonly experience death anxiety, and this anxiety has a nonnegligible impact on patients' mental health and overall quality of life. Background: Post‐operative diarrhoea is a common adverse event after pancreatic surgery. While the risk factors for this condition have been identified, the increasing trend of administering chemotherapy before surgery might change these factors. This study aimed to identify the risk factors of post‐operative diarrhoea in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: Patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and pancreatectomy because of PDAC between 2021 and 2023 were included. The preoperative characteristics of, operative details of and post‐operative outcomes in patients with and without post‐operative diarrhoea were collected and compared. The independent risk factors of post‐operative diarrhoea were identified using logistic regression analysis. STROBE checklist was used. Results: Post‐operative diarrhoea occurred in 65 out of 145 (44.8%) patients during hospitalization. Elevated white blood cell count, advanced tumour stage, and late abdominal drain removal were independent risk factors for post‐operative diarrhoea (p <.001, p =.006 and p =.009, respectively). Conclusions: Some perioperative factors influence post‐operative diarrhoea in patients who undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Background: The first step in preventing pressure injuries (PIs), which represent a significant burden on intensive care unit (ICU) patients and the health care system, is to assess the risk for developing PIs. A valid risk assessment scale is essential to evaluate the risk and avoid PIs. Objectives: To compare the predictive validity of the Braden scale and Waterlow scale in ICUs. Design: A multicentre, prospective and cross‐sectional study. Methods: We conducted this study among 6416 patients admitted to ICUs in Gansu province of China from April 2021 to October 2022. The incidence and characteristics of PIs were collected. The risk assessment of PIs was determined using the Braden and Waterlow scale. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the two scales were compared. Results: Out of 5903 patients, 72 (1.2%) developed PIs. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive, and the area under the curve of the Braden scale were 77.8%, 50.9%, 0.014 and 0.996, and 0.689, respectively. These values for the Waterlow scale were 54.2%, 71.1%, 0.017, 0.994 and 0.651. Conclusions: Both scales could be used for risk assessment of PIs in ICU patients. However, the accuracy of visual inspection for assessment of skin colour, nursing preventive measures for patients and scales inter‐rater inconsistency may limited the predictive validity statistics. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Both scales could be used for PIs risk assessment. The low specificity of the Braden scale and low sensitivity of the Waterlow scale remind medical staff to use them in combination with clinical judgement and other objective indicators. This paper describes the factor analysis testing and construct validation of the Japanese version of the Caffrey Cultural Competence Health Services (J-CCCHS). The inventory, composed of 28 items, was translated using language and subject matter experts. Psychometric testing (exploratory factor, alpha reliability, and confirmatory factor analyses) was undertaken with nurses (N = 7494, 92% female, mean age 32.6 years) from 19 hospitals across Japan. Principal components extraction with varimax rotation yielded a 5-factor solution (62.31% variance explained) that was labeled: knowledge, comfort-proximal, comfort-distal, awareness, and awareness of national policy. Cronbach α for the subscales ranged from 0.756 to 0.892. In confirmatory factor analysis using the robust maximum likelihood estimator, the chi-square test was as follows: χ2(340) = 14604.44, P < .001. After correlated errors were introduced, there was evidence of improved model fit (χ2(335) = 8681.61, P < .05) but the other indices showed improvement (RMSEA = .058 [90% CI, 0.057-0.059], TLI = .891, CFI = .903, and SRMR = .059). The discriminating power of the J-CCCHS was indicated by statistically mean differences in J-CCCHS subscale scores between predefined groups. Taking into consideration that this is the first foray into construct validation for this instrument, and that fit was improved when a subsequent data driven model was tested, and it has the ability to distinguish between known groups that are expected to differ in cultural competence, the instrument can be of value to clinicians and educators alike. Background: Medication self‐management (MSM) is defined as a person's ability to cope with medication treatment for a chronic condition, along with the associated physical and psychosocial effects that the medication causes in their daily lives. For many patients, it is important to be able to self‐manage their medication successfully, as they will often be expected to do after discharge. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the willingness and attitudes of patients with schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorders regarding MSM during hospital admission. A secondary aim was to identify various factors associated with patient willingness to participate in MSM and to describe their assumptions concerning needs and necessary conditions, as well as their attitudes towards their medication. Methods: A multicentre, quantitative cross‐sectional observational design was used to study the willingness and attitudes of psychiatric patients regarding MSM during hospitalisation. The study adhered to guidelines for Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE). Results: In this study, 84 patients, of which 43 were patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and 41 were patients with bipolar disorders, participated. A majority of the patients (81%) were willing to participate in MSM during their hospitalisation. Analysis revealed patients are more willing to MSM if they are younger (r = −.417, p <.001) and a decreasing number of medicines (r = −.373, p =.003). Patients' willingness was positively associated with the extent of support by significant others during and after hospitalisation (Pearson's r =.298, p =.011). Patients were convinced that they would take their medication more correctly if MSM were to be allowed during hospitalisation (65%). Conclusion: Most of the patients were willing to self‐manage their medication during hospitalisation, however, under specific conditions such as being motivated to take their medication correctly and to understand the benefits of their medication. Relevance to Clinical Practice: From a policy point of view, our study provided useful insights into how patients look at MSM to enable the development of future strategies. Aims: To establish a cognitive appraisal path model that examines the impact of stroke knowledge on stigma with the parallel mediating effects of negative and positive coping traits, as well as the moderating effects of family functioning. Background: Stroke‐related stigma, a 'mixture' of negative emotions involving internal criticism and external judgement, has been shown to impair patients' health outcomes. However, the specific factors underlying cognitive appraisals and their pathways remain unknown. Design: A cross‐sectional design. Methods: The cross‐sectional sample was from two stroke centres in China. Questionnaires were administered to collect sociodemographic data, stroke knowledge, coping traits, family functioning and stigma. Hierarchical regression models and the moderated parallel mediation model were constructed to analyse influencing pathways. The study adhered to the strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology guideline. Results: All 144 samples reported stigma symptoms with a moderate‐to‐high standardising score. The best hierarchical regression model explains 55.5% of the variance in stigma. The parallel mediation model indicated that negative and positive coping traits co‐mediating the association of stroke knowledge and stigma. After adding the family functioning as a moderator, the moderated parallel mediation model was confirmed with adequate fit indices. Conclusion: Among the cognitive appraisal factors affecting stroke‐related stigma, stroke knowledge reduces stigma by modifying coping traits, while poor family functioning may serve as an opposing moderator. Notably, when family support is insufficient, enhanced stroke knowledge might paradoxically exacerbate the stigma. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study contributes knowledge on transforming health education and emphasises the pivotal roles of clinical nursing practitioners. Aim: The aim of this study was to test a moderated-mediation model, explaining how and under which circumstances a process- or an outcome-accountability focus affects performance. Design: Randomized controlled design, using screen-based simulations. Methods: Data were collected during 2021. Two screen-based simulations of medication administration (for low- and high-complexity tasks) were used. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of the six experimental conditions. Nurses completed validated questionnaires on strain levels and their perceptions of the simulated task complexity and accountability focus. Performance was assessed via validated checklists assessing nurses' performance of the simulation. Results: Task complexity significantly moderated the relationship between accountabilityfocus conditions and strain. For the process-accountability-focus condition, strain levels were lower during high-complexity tasks compared with low-complexity tasks, while for the outcome-accountability-focus condition, strain levels were lower during lowcomplexity tasks compared with high-complexity tasks. The highest strain levels were observed under the no accountability-focus condition. Additionally, this interaction had an impact on performance, with nurses' strain playing a mediating role. Conclusions: Any accountability focus reduces strain levels and enhances performance compared with having no accountability focus. The choice of accountability focus should be based on task-complexity considerations. Implications for the Profession and Patient Care: Managers can effectively reduce nurses' strain and improve performance by prioritizing outcome accountability focus for simpler tasks and process accountability focus for complex tasks. Impact: The study addressed previous ambiguous findings regarding the type of accountability focus that better motivates nurses' performance. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between sensory impairment and home care client's received care time. Design: A cross- sectional multi-source study. Methods: Data from a self-reported staff survey on care time allocation were merged with registry data from the Resident Assessment Instrument registry (n = 1477). The data were collected during 1 week from 17 home care units in Finland in October 2021. The relationship between sensory impairment and clients received care time was examined using linear regression analyses. Results: The linear regression analyses showed that having vision impairment alone increased care time, while dual sensory impairment resulted in decreased received care time. Hearing impairment alone was not statistically significantly associated with care time. Conclusion: The holistic care need of home care clients with dual sensory impairment may not be adequate. To ensure equality and the individually tailored care of clients, further attention must be paid to clients with sensory impairments, especially those with dual sensory impairment. Furthermore, the competence of home care workers to encounter and communicate with clients with sensory impairment must be developed to support the holistic care. Implications for the patient care: The sensory impairments of home care clients must be identified in time and considered in care planning and encountering clients. Impact: As there is a risk that clients with dual sensory impairment are not able to fully express themselves, it is imperative that further attention is paid to clients with sensory impairments, to better understand and support this vulnerable group. Method Data were collected from a total of 241 nursing enrolled in two 4-year baccalaureate nursing programmes in South Korea, using a self-administrated questionnaire. To identify predictors of happiness, stepwise regression analysis was conducted. Results The results indicated that grateful disposition and support from intimate people significantly predict happiness among Korean nursing students. These two factors accounted for 38.0% of the variance in happiness. Discussion This study indicated grateful disposition and support from intimate people as factors promoting happiness in nursing students. The findings highlight grateful disposition and support from intimate people as important factors when developing effective interventions that foster nursing students' happiness. Aims and objectives The aim of this paper is to describe how selected demographic characteristics 'explain' the observed variance in the distribution of maternal health literacy estimates in adolescents attending antenatal care in Uganda, as estimated by the 'Maternal health literacy scale'. Background By the age of 20 years, more than 60% of Ugandan females are mothers. In the Busoga region of Uganda, the percentage of pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers is at its highest (above 30%). Design Validated questionnaire survey. Methods The Maternal health literacy scale was administered to 384 adolescents aged 15-19 years attending antenatal care in Jinja and Iganga districts of the Busoga region during the period of July 2013-December 2013. The Mann-Whitney U test in SPSS21 was used to determine if the two levels of dichotomised person factors, i.e. demographic characteristics, relate to 'significantly' different mean maternal health literacy estimates, not strictly following the normal distribution, as measured by the Maternal health literacy scale. Results The person factors, age, education level, pregnancy order and prepregnancy awareness about conception, explained approximately 12% of the observed variance in maternal health literacy estimates. Conclusions Prepregnancy awareness about conception was the single most contributory factor to the observed variance in estimated maternal health literacy levels. More research on women of childbearing age is warranted to explore the impact of further person factors on the maternal health literacy in pregnant adolescents. Relevance to clinical practice Using the person factors found to show 'significant' impact on maternal health literacy in pregnant adolescents, target-specific interventions aimed at improving maternal health literacy in pregnant adolescents can be formulated. By accounting for these factors in reproductive health policy designs, one might take preventive actions to curb the prevalence of adolescent pregnancies in both developing and developed countries. Aims This paper presents the relative merits and comparative costs of conducting trial of void using Hospital-In-The-Home vs. the Day Procedure Unit. Background Hospitals increasingly discharge patients with acute urinary retention with indwelling urinary catheters. For these to be removed and patients supported to return to normal urinary function, outpatient or in-home services are used. To date, the relative effectiveness and costs of Hospital-In-The-Home care and Day Procedure Unit care for trial of void have not been examined. Design This retrospective study used a static-group comparison design. Methods Hospital administrative data from 1 February 2009-30 March 2011 for patients having trial of void in the Day Procedure Unit ( n = 107) and Hospital-In-The-Home ( n = 163) of a tertiary hospital in Western Australia were compared in terms of patient outcomes and costs. Results Day Procedure Unit patients had longer wait times than Hospital-In-The-Home patients; there was no difference between the two groups for average per patient days of service or successful first trials. Hospital-In-The-Home care did not increase the overall period of care. Per patient average ward-equivalent cost in the Day Procedure Unit was A$396 higher than the Hospital-In-The-Home ward-equivalent cost. The average cost saving per patient for Hospital-In-The-Home care including trial of void cost and emergency department visits was A$117. Conclusion Patient outcomes from Hospital-In-The-Home trial of void in low-risk patients were comparable to those of Day Procedure Unit care and less costly. Aim: To assess the prevalence and identify the predictors of breakfast skipping among 14‐ to 16‐year‐old adolescents in Jordan, focusing on mother‐related variables. Background: Breakfast is an essential meal across one's entire lifespan and especially important during the adolescent years. The practice of skipping breakfast has become so prevalent among adolescents that it is now a well‐documented nutritional problem. Design A descriptive cross‐sectional correlational design. Methods: A proportional cluster stratified sampling protocol was used to select 1896 adolescents and their mothers (1013) during the period of March to June 2016. A self‐reported questionnaire was used to collect data on breakfast‐skipping rates, the perceived reasons for this behavior, the perceived importance of consuming breakfast, and maternal encouragement of breakfast consumption. Results: The prevalence of breakfast skipping was 34.3% among adolescents and 21.5% among their mothers. A significant association was found between breakfast skipping among adolescents and their mothers (χ2 [1, n = 998] = 37.90, P =.001). Maternal encouragement of breakfast consumption, gender, and adolescent perception of the importance of this meal were found to be significant predictors of adolescent breakfast skipping. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of involving mothers in developing nutritional health plans aimed at promoting regular breakfast consumption among adolescents. Regular breakfast intake has been linked to positive benefits for adolescent health, including lower risk for obesity and fewer biomarkers of chronic illness.The practice of skipping breakfast is highly prevalent among adolescents, both in Jordan and across the globe.Parental eating habits and attitudes influence adolescent eating behaviors and attitudes. What the paper adds? Female adolescents in Jordan skipped breakfast more often than male adolescents and to a significant degree. For both groups, lack of appetite was reported as the main reason (39%) for skipping breakfast.The interrelationships found between maternal and adolescent variables related to breakfast consumption highlight the pivotal role of mothers in promoting this practice. Objectives: To determine post‐COVID syndromes in the Indian population, correlating a wide spectrum of post‐COVID manifestations with acute disease severity and associated risk factors. Background: Post‐COVID Syndrome (PCS) is defined as signs and symptoms that develop during or after acute COVID‐19 infection. Design of Study: This is a prospective observational cohort with repetitive measurements. Methods: The study followed RT‐PCR confirmed COVID‐19‐positive survivors discharged from HAHC Hospital, New Delhi, for a period of 12 weeks. The patients were interviewed over the phone at 4 weeks and 12 weeks from the onset of symptoms for evaluation of clinical symptoms and health‐related quality of life parameters. Results: A total of 200 patients completed the study. At the baseline, 50% of the patients were categorised as severe based on their acute infection assessment. At 12 weeks after symptom onset, fatigue (23.5%), hair loss (12.5%) and dyspnea (9%) were the main persistent symptoms. The incidence of hair loss (12.5%), memory loss (4.5%) and brain fog (5%) were found to be increased as compared to the acute infection period. Severity of the acute COVID infection behaved as an independent predictor for the development of PCS, with high odds of experiencing persistent cough (OR = 13.1), memory loss (OR = 5.2) and fatigue (OR = 3.3). Further, 30% of subjects in the severe group experienced statistically significant fatigue at 12 weeks (p <.05). Conclusion: From the results of our study, it can be concluded that there is a huge disease burden of post‐COVID Syndrome (PCS). The PCS comprised multisystem symptoms ranging from serious complaints of dyspnea, memory loss and brain fog to non‐serious complaints of fatigue and hair loss. Severity of the acute COVID infection behaved as an independent predictor for the development of PCS. Our findings strongly recommend vaccination against COVID‐19, for protection from disease severity as well as prevention of PCS. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The findings of our study support the multidisciplinary approach required for the management of PCS with a team comprising of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and psychiatrists working in close coordination for the rehabilitation of these patients. As nurses are considered the most trusted professionals in the community and the class of health workers associated with rehabilitation, focus should be given to educating them on PCS, which would prove to be an important strategy for efficient monitoring and long‐term management of COVID‐19 survivors. Aims and objectives: To identify the factors influencing the intent to provide care among nurses involved in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) care. Background: COVID‐19 was first reported in Wuhan, China, in 2019. In 2020, the World Health Organisation declared it a pandemic, leading to 5,827,104 deaths and 421,203,495 confirmed cases as of 19 February 2022. The high transmissibility of COVID‐19 has prolonged the pandemic for over 2 years, resulting in deleterious effects on nurses' physical and mental health. The fear of infection and isolation may lead to negative experiences and perceptions among COVID‐19 frontline nurses, which may ultimately degrade the quality of patient care. Thus, it is essential to identify factors influencing of nurses' intent to provide care. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Methods: Data were collected from 169 nurses involved in direct COVID‐19 care at a hospital designated for infectious disease care in Korea from August to September 2021 using an online questionnaire. STROBE checklist was followed. Results: Nurses' intent to provide care significantly differed based on whether they lived with parents and had adequate availability of personal protection equipment. The correlation analysis indicated that the intent to provide care was significantly positively correlated with normative beliefs, control beliefs, attitude towards the behaviour, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. Perceived behavioural control, control beliefs and attitude towards the behaviour were significant factors influencing nurses' intent to provide COVID‐19 care. Conclusion: This study showed that nurses perceived behavioural control and positive behaviour towards providing COVID‐19 care fundamentally influenced their intent to provide care. Relevance to clinical practice: In clinical practice, the safety and rights of individual nurses who participated in COVID‐19‐related patient care are promoted, and ultimately, the quality of patient care is improved. Background: Continuity of care is viewed as a hallmark of high‐quality care in the primary care context. Measures to evaluate the quality of provider performance are scarce, and it is unclear how the assessments correlate with patients' experiences of care as coherent and interconnected over time, consistent with their preferences and care needs. Aim: To develop and evaluate a patient‐reported experience measure of continuity of care in primary care for patients with complex care needs. Method: The study was conducted in two stages: (1) development of the instrument based on theory and empirical studies and reviewed for content validity (16 patients with complex care needs and 8 experts) and (2) psychometric evaluation regarding factor structure, test–retest reliability, internal consistency reliability, and convergent validity. In all, 324 patients participated in the psychometric evaluation. Results: The Patient Experienced Continuity of care Questionnaire (PECQ) contains 20 items clustered in four dimensions of continuity of care measuring Information (four items), Relation (six items), Management (five items), and Knowledge (five items). Overall, the hypothesized factor structure was indicated. The PECQ also showed satisfactory convergent validity, internal consistency, and stability. Conclusion/Implications: The PECQ is a multidimensional patient experience instrument that can provide information on various dimensions useful for driving quality improvement strategies in the primary care context for patients with complex care needs. Objectives: To explore the interrelationships between oral hygiene habits, oral health status and cognitive function in older adults. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Setting and Participants: A total of 371 participants (age 76.79 [7.99] years) were enrolled from June 2020 to November 2021 in an aged care facility. Methods: Cognitive function was screened using the mini‐mental state examination (MMSE) with adjusted cut‐off points for age and education. Periodontal status (Biofilm‐Gingival Interface index based on periodontal probing depth and bleeding on probing), dental status (plaque, calculus, and caries), and tooth loss were assessed through full‐mouth examination. Oral hygiene habits were based on self‐ or informant‐reporting. Results: Poor periodontal status was an associated factor for MCI (OR = 2.89, 95% CI = 1.20–6.95), while multiple tooth loss (OR = 4.90, 95% CI = 1.06 ~ 22.59), brushing teeth less than once a day (OR = 2.88, 95% CI = 1.12 ~ 7.45) and delayed dental visits (OR = 2.45, 95% CI = 1.05 ~ 5.68) were associated factors for cognitive impairment. An indirect effect of brushing teeth ≥2 daily on MMSE score through periodontal status was observed only in older adults without cognitive impairment (Bootstrap‐corrected B = 0.17, 95%CI = 0.03 ~ 0.36, SE = 0.08, β = 0.08). Conclusions and Implications: Adequate toothbrushing might prevent cognitive decline indirectly by improving periodontal health only in older adults without cognitive impairment. Multiple tooth loss, infrequent toothbrushing, and delayed dental visits were associated factors for cognitive impairment. Nursing professionals and health care policymakers should advocate for the improvement of basic oral hygiene in older adults, and provide regular professional oral hygiene care for older adults with cognitive impairment. Aim: To develop a parsimonious, shortened version of the Perceived Perioperative Competence Scale‐Revised for perioperative nurses to complete as part of their specialty training while retaining good psychometric properties. Design: A longitudinal online survey was adopted. Methods: A national sample of perioperative nurses from Australia completed an online survey at two different time points 6 months apart between February and October 2021. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for item reduction and construct validity, while criterion, convergent validity and internal consistency were examined. Results: Usable data for psychometric assessment were obtained from 485 operating room nurses at time 1 and 164 nurses at time 2. The original 40‐item revised scale was reduced to an 18‐item measure, maintaining its six domains. Cronbach's alpha for the 18‐item scale was.92 at time 1 and.90 at time 2. Scale validation demonstrated moderate to weak positive relationships in perceived competence scores relative to general self‐efficacy, years of operating room experience, postgraduate education and recency of training. Conclusions: Results suggest the 18‐item Perceived Perioperative Competence Scale‐Revised Short Form has initial robust psychometric properties and may be implemented in clinical settings as part of perioperative transition‐to‐practice, orientation programs and yearly professional development reviews. Implications for the Profession: This short‐form scale can help prepare perioperative nurses to demonstrate clinical competence in a climate of increasing professional demands using a valid measure of competence required in clinical practice. Impact: Short and validated scales of perioperative competence are needed in clinical practice. Aim: The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of urinary incontinence on body image, self‐esteem, and quality of life. Methods: The study was conducted with 218 women with urinary incontinence. The study data were collected using the Socio‐Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Body Cathexis Scale, Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale, and Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results: There was a weak, statistically significant, positive relationship found between the Body Cathexis Scale total average scores and the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale total average scores of the women and a weak, statistically significant, negative relationship with the Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire total average scores. In addition, a weak, statistically significant, negative relationship was found between the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale total score averages and Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire total score averages. Significant effects were seen for body image score with pad usage; for self‐esteem in relation to number of deliveries, duration, and frequency of urinary incontinence; and for incontinence quality of life and duration and frequency of urinary incontinence and pad usage. Conclusions: It was concluded that most of the women with urinary incontinence had negative body image and that more than half of them had moderate or low self‐esteem and a moderate quality of life. Aim: Nurses play an essential role in improving health‐related knowledge and self‐efficacy of patients through health education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of message‐framed informational videos on diabetes management knowledge and self‐efficacy in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A quasi‐experimental pretest and posttest design with two experimental and one standard care comparison groups was carried out to examine the effects of the message‐framed videos. The two message‐framed informational videos were developed to provide health teachings about diabetes self‐care. The knowledge and self‐efficacy of the two video groups and lecture comparison group were measured before and after the intervention using valid and reliable instruments established by the authors. Results: After the intervention, the knowledge and self‐efficacy of the two experimental groups were significantly higher than the comparison group. No significant difference was found in the knowledge scores between the two experimental groups, but a significant difference was noted in the average increase in their self‐efficacy. Conclusion: Message‐framed informational videos can be effective in increasing the diabetes management knowledge and self‐efficacy, and a gain‐framed rather than loss‐framed approach can be superior in increasing self‐efficacy. The use of an informational video in providing health education to patients improves retention of information.Message framing may be used to provide health‐related information effectively regarding gains and losses of behavioural changes among patients. Limited work has reported the magnitude of the effect of message‐framed videos on self‐efficacy. What this paper adds? Aims: To gain insights into the barriers towards the prevention and/or reduction of involuntary treatment in long‐term geriatric care. Design: Mixed methods. Background: Measures to which a person resists and/or does not provide consent for are defined as involuntary treatment. The use of involuntary treatment violates the autonomy of (older) persons and causes more harm than benefit. Moreover, it contradicts the values of person‐centred care. Nevertheless, its use among people living with dementia (PLWD) is still common practice. Methods: We conducted a cross‐sectional, mixed methods study, including an online survey for professional caregivers and a semistructured focus group interview with professional caregivers. Results: A total of 218 participants completed the questionnaire. The percentage of participants who perceived barriers in one of the 22 survey items ranged from 15% to 42%. Lack of time, the experienced need to use involuntary treatment, uncertainty about responsibilities of stakeholders and a lack of knowledge on methods to prevent and/or reduce the use of involuntary treatment were most seen as barriers. Nursing staff perceived a lack of time hindering them in the prevention or reduction of involuntary treatment more often than other professional caregivers. Working in home care and having no former experience with involuntary treatment usage increased perceived barriers. Participants of the focus group interview confirmed these findings and added that professional caregivers in general lack awareness on the concept of involuntary treatment. Conclusions: One out of four professional caregivers experiences barriers hindering prevention and/or reduction of involuntary treatment. More research is needed to gain a better understanding of how professional caregivers can be supported to remove barriers and, consequently, prevent and/or reduce the use of involuntary treatment. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Professional caregivers experience many barriers towards the prevention and reduction of involuntary treatment. Aims: To determine the risk of pressure injury development in the intensive care unit based on changes in patient conditions. Design: This retrospective study was based on secondary data analysis. Methods: Patient data from electronic health records were retrospectively obtained and we included 438 and 1752 patients with and without pressure injury, respectively, among those admitted to the medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs) from January 2017–February 2020. Changes in patient conditions were analysed based on the first and last objective data values from the day of ICU admission to the day before the onset of pressure injury and categorised as follows: improved, maintained normal, exacerbated and unchanged. Logistic regression was performed to identify the significant predictors of pressure injury development based on 11 variables. Results: The 11 selected variables were age, body mass index, activity, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score, nursing severity level, pulse and albumin, haematocrit, C‐reactive protein, total bilirubin and blood urea nitrogen levels. The risk for a pressure injury was high with exacerbation of or persistently abnormal levels of nursing severity, albumin, haematocrit, C‐reactive protein, blood urea nitrogen and pulse >100 beat/min. Conclusion: Periodic monitoring of haematological variables is important for preventing pressure injury in the intensive care unit. Reporting Method: The study followed STROBE guidelines. Background: Qualified individualised nursing care should be provided to all communities and ethnic groups with free of ethnocentrism. Aims: To evaluate nurses' individualised care behaviours and ethnocentric attitudes and predict the relationship between their individualised care behaviours and ethnocentric attitudes. Design: A descriptive and exploratory study. Methods: This study was conducted with 250 nurses working in a public and two private hospitals in a city, an area with many refugees. Data were collected using the Ethnocentrism Scale and Individualised Care Behaviours Scale. Structural equation model analysis to test hypothetical model and descriptive statistics were used. Results: Nurses working in the private hospitals had a higher individualised care decision control mean score. Those nurses who enjoyed spending time with people from different cultures had lower mean ethnocentrism scale scores, higher individualised care clinical status, personal life and decision control status subscales mean scores compared to other nurses. Mean scores of the individualised care personal life and decision control status subscales of the nurses who followed the literature on transcultural nursing was higher. A significant relationship between the ethnocentrism levels and individualised care behaviours was identified. Accordingly, the ethnocentric attitudes of the nurses negatively affected their individualised care behaviours, and the model established between the two concepts is statistically appropriate. Conclusions: Nurses who work in private hospitals, receive intercultural nursing education and enjoy spending time with different cultures have higher individualised care behaviours and lower ethnocentrism levels. Ethnocentric attitudes of the nurses negatively affected their individualised care behaviours. Care strategies should be developed that consider the factors that will maximize individualised care practices that minimize ethnocentric behaviours among nurses. Implications for the Profession: Increasing awareness on individualised care behaviours, ethnocentric attitudes and effected factors will contribute to improve of nursing care quality of nurses while giving care to individuals from different cultures. Background: Fatigue is associated with multidimensional factors in heart failure patients. Investigating longitudinal changes in fatigue and its association in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is needed to create interventions for improving fatigue during recovery. Aims: This study examined the trajectory of fatigue and its associated factors over time in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: This longitudinal study enrolled 125 patients undergoing cardiac surgery in northern Taiwan. Patients completed questionnaires before surgery, at discharge, and at 1, 3 and 6 months post‐discharge. Fatigue was measured using the General Fatigue Scale. Generalised estimating equation models were fitted to identify variables associated with fatigue over time. This study complied with the STROBE checklist. Results: The sample (mean age = 60.70 ± 10.42) was mostly male (68%). High fatigue was found in 73.6% of patients before cardiac surgery and significantly decreased over the six months after discharge. NYHA III/IV, lower haemoglobin level, more symptom distress, poor sleep quality, higher anxiety and depression and lower social and family support were significantly associated with an increase in fatigue levels over time. Compared with before discharge, decreases in sleep quality at 1, 3 and 6 months were significantly associated with an increase in fatigue levels (p <.001). The increases in social support (B = 0.20, p =.016) and family support (B = 0.37, p =.002) at 6 months were significantly associated with an increase in the fatigue scores. Conclusion: Fatigue was common and associated with symptoms, sleep quality, emotion and social support in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. In addition to symptom management, improving sleep quality and social support are important to manage fatigue for the long‐term care of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Relevance to clinical practice: Patient education on symptom management, sleep hygiene and family support is suggested to improve fatigue in patients recovering from cardiac surgery. Aim: To examine the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and health‐related quality of life in women with type‐II diabetes. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: A study questionnaire comprising three valid instruments was used to obtain data about lower urinary tract symptoms, sleep quality and physical and mental component summary health‐related quality of life between July 2017 and December 2018 (n = 343). Pearson's correlation coefficients were estimated initially to examine the relationships between the three variables. Multiple regression models were tested using a regression‐based approach Hayes PROCESS macro for SPSS to examine the significance of proposed mediation effects. Results: Most participants experienced at least one urinary symptom (n = 268, 78.1%). The total number of types of lower urinary tract symptoms experienced by participants was significantly inversely correlated with physical and mental component summary health‐related quality of life, and sleep quality. Participants' sleep quality was significantly correlated with physical and mental component summary health‐related quality of life. The relationships of lower urinary tract symptoms with physical and mental component summary health‐related quality of life were, respectively, fully and partially mediated by sleep quality. Conclusion: Sleep quality played a mediating role on the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and health‐related quality of life. Our findings could lead to improvements of diabetes care in nursing and healthcare practices. Impact Understanding the role of sleep quality in the adverse effects of lower urinary tract symptoms on health‐related quality of life contributes to the development and delivery of appropriate strategies to promote optimal health‐related quality of life. We recommended including assessments of lower urinary tract symptoms, sleep and health‐related quality of life in routine diabetes management. Nurses and healthcare professionals should concurrently reduce lower urinary tract symptoms and improve sleep to achieve this population's optimal health‐related quality of life. Aims and objectives: This study examines the relationship between social status and postpartum depression by migrant generation and determines whether social support moderates the relationship between migrant generations and postpartum depression. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) afflicts more than 1 in 10 childbearing women worldwide; and this mental health problem may be higher among vulnerable populations of women such as migrants, an increasingly prevalent group in many countries. Social support and migrant generation (1st generation—mother and her parents born outside the host country; 2nd generation—mother born in the host country but not her parents; 2.5 generation—mother and one parent born in the host country) may contribute to the conflicting findings on migrant mothers and postpartum depression. Design: This study used a cross‐sectional design. Methods: Sample recruitment of migrant and non‐migrant first‐time mothers (n=515) was implemented through an online platform. A STROBE checklist guided the reporting of this study. Results: PPD was lower among mothers with social support. While social support was negatively associated with PPD for all mothers, PPD was not associated with migrant generation nor was a moderation effect found. Conclusions: Social support is negatively associated with PPD for all mothers, but levels of PPD for migrant mothers may be linked to country‐specific healthcare resources and immigration policies. Immigrant policies influence migrant mothers' healthcare access; thus, immigration policies may influence PPD among first‐time migrant mothers and the manner in which nurses can provide formal support. This study finds that social support, including the formal social support provided by nurses, decreases the likelihood of PPD. Demands on nurses' technical and assessment skills are high, but nurses also need to remember that their skills of providing social support are equally important, and for first‐time mothers, may contribute to decreasing PPD. Aims and objectives: To analyse the status quo and influencing factors of self‐care ability in breast cancer‐related lymphedema (BCRL) patients and explore the moderating role of social support between self‐efficacy and self‐care ability, to provide references for clinical intervention. Background: The 'gold standard' for the treatment of lymphedema is two‐stage Complete Decongestion Therapy (CDT). Due to the high frequency of patients seeking treatment and CDT is not covered by medical insurance, resulting the medical cost is high, and a set integrated course of edema treatment cannot be completed. Nevertheless, with sufficient self‐care ability, patients can reduce the frequency of outpatient and inpatient treatments, and initiate detumescence procedures with affordable home care. Accordingly, it is necessary to pay attention to the self‐care ability of BCRL patients. Design: A descriptive and cross‐sectional study following the STROBE guideline checklist. Methods: From June 2021 to January 2022, 156 BCRL patients were selected as convenience samples. Questionnaires were administered to the patients using the sociodemographic information questionnaire, the exercise of self‐care agency scale, Chinese version of strategies used by people to promote health, and social support rating scale. Spearman rank correlation was used to analyse the relationship among the three, and univariate and multiple linear regression were used for factor analysis and process to explore the moderating role of social support. Results: The total score of self‐care ability of BCRL patients was 41.00 (32.50, 51.00). The self‐efficacy and social support of BCRL patients were positively correlated with the total score and its dimensions of self‐care ability. Disease duration, severity and difficulty raising limbs were negative correlation factors influencing the self‐care ability of BCRL patients, and self‐efficacy and social support were positive correlation factors, which could explain 77.8% of the total variation. The moderating role of social support between self‐efficacy and self‐care ability was significant, and its moderating role boundary value was 15.70. Conclusions: The self‐care ability of BCRL patients is at a low level. The longer duration of lymphedema, the more serious degree of edema, the more difficulty raising limbs, the lower self‐efficacy and the less social support, the poorer self‐care ability of BCRL patients. Self‐efficacy has a greater impact on the self‐care ability of patients with high levels of social support. Relevance to clinical practice: Factors and moderator‐based models are the first to identify predictors of self‐care ability and the moderating role of social support in Chinese BCRL patients, which may facilitate healthcare practitioners to develop appropriate interventions to manage self‐care ability. Aim: To explore undergraduate nursing students' understanding of fundamental care and identify educational leadership opportunities to deepen students' understanding of fundamental care concepts. Design: Sequential‐explanatory mixed methods study. Methods: We conducted a cross sectional survey (n = 202) and focus groups (n = 24) to explore undergraduate nursing students' ability to identify fundamental care needs. All data were collected between November 2020 and April 2021. Survey data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics and focus group data were thematically analysed. Results: Year One students scored significantly lower in their ability to identify fundamental care needs compared with students in other years, even after controlling for route, gender and age. Post‐degree students scored significantly higher than direct entry or transfer students. Students ≤19 years of age had significantly lower scores compared with students ≥25 years of age. Our focus group findings highlighted that students were often unable to define fundamental care, but they identified learning about various components of fundamental care in a variety of ways. While students understood that fundamental care was required in all settings, they were challenged in providing this care in acute and virtual settings. Students shared several suggestions to support fundamental care skills development across the curriculum. Conclusions: There is a need for a clear definition and description of the fundamentals of care that is used consistently by faculty, students and curriculum documents. It is important to encourage and support educators to share real‐world nursing stories, offer students time to share their personal experiences, develop creative learning opportunities and foster student reflection to deepen students' understanding of the fundamentals of care. Impact Educators need support to meaningfully incorporate fundamentals of care learning opportunities across multiple care settings. Background: Although the optimal use of prescribed medications for stroke survivors is critical for preventing secondary stroke, longitudinal observations of the natural course of medication persistence and adherence in Korean stroke survivors are rare. Furthermore, studies are needed to identify strong predictors influencing medication adherence and to determine whether these predictors change over time. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the longitudinal medication persistence and adherence at 3 months and 1 year after discharge in all stroke patients and to identify predictors of long‐term medication adherence in patients who can self‐medicate. Design: A multicentre, prospective, longitudinal descriptive study. Methods: A total of 600 consecutive ischaemic stroke patients were recruited from three stroke centres across Korea, from 1 September, 2017 to 28 February, 2019. Various factors related to medication adherence suggested by the World Health Organisation were investigated through face‐to‐face interviews at each centre during hospitalisation. Medication persistence and adherence were assessed at 3 months and 1 year after discharge using the eight‐item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale through telephone interviews. Results: Of 537 survivors at 3 months, 526 (98.0%) were persistent and 472 (89.7%) were adherent. Of 493 survivors at 1 year, 477 (96.8%) were persistent and 392 (82.2%) were adherent. Medication belief, income and health literacy were statistically significant predictors of three‐month medication adherence, which predicted one‐year medication adherence with older age and low income. Conclusions: Among Korean stroke survivors, three‐month and one‐year medication persistence and adherence were relatively good. Medication beliefs and three‐month medication adherence were important and modifiable factors predicting three‐month adherence and one‐year adherence, respectively. Relevance to clinical practice: To increase long‐term adherence to medication, various strategies are needed to improve beliefs about medication, taking into account the patient's age and level of knowledge. Aims and objectives: To determine the prevalence and the associated factors of self‐perceived medical errors among Chinese emergency department nurses. Background: The emergency department is a place with a high incidence of medical errors. Studies about the occurrence and related influencing factors of medical errors among emergency nurses in China are very insufficient. Design: A nationwide cross‐sectional study. Methods: A nationwide cross‐sectional study was conducted from July 2018–August 2018. A total of 17,582 emergency department nurses from 31 provinces across China were eventually included in the analysis. Logistic regression is applied to examine the association of the independent variables with the perceived medical errors. The reporting of this study was compliant with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist for cross‐sectional studies. Results: Of 17,582 participating nurses, 4445 (25.28%) reported self‐perceived medical errors in the past 3 months. Nurses who were serving as nurses‐in‐charge; who reported fair or bad physical health; who reported staff shortage; who were exposed to more verbal abuse at work; who experienced effort–reward imbalance; who reported more over‐commitment; or who had depressive symptoms were more likely to report medical errors. Older age and female gender were protective factors. Conclusions: In this study, a quarter of the emergency nurses reported that they had made medical errors in the past 3 months. Self‐perceived medical errors are associated with multiple domains of work‐related factors and personal distress. Feasible measures should be taken to reduce nurses' workload, improve their working environment, monitor and minimise the occurrence of medical errors among emergency department nurses. Relevance to clinical practice: Emergency nurses, who are the most frequently in contact with patients, play an important role in identifying risk factors and preventing medical errors. Identifying risk factors that may lead to medical errors in the medical environment from both internal and external aspects will help nursing practitioners, hospital administrators and policy makers to take timely preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of medical errors and reduce harm to patients. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine and compare decision‐making preferences on end‐of‐life care for older people in Japan, the Hong Kong SAR and South Korea. Background: Cultural values and beliefs influence decision‐making on end‐of‐life care. Design: A cross‐sectional design was adopted. Methods: Community‐dwelling people aged ≥65 with additional requirements were recruited in 2016–2017 in the three regions. Their decision‐making preferences on end‐of‐life care were assessed using Pang et al.'s questionnaire. These preferences and their sociodemographic and personal experience variables were compared and analysed using univariate and multiple logistic regressions. The STROBE checklist was followed. Results: This study involved 415 participants. In all three regions, the most preferred decision maker and person with whom to discuss end‐of‐life care issues was a family member. Participants in the Hong Kong SAR were less likely to select a family member as their preferred decision maker than those in Japan (adjusted odds ratio = 0.129). Koreans were less likely to discuss end‐of‐life care issues with medical professionals than people in Japan (adjusted odds ratio = 0.278). More than 70% of the participants in each region indicated that they would not prefer to leave an advance directive to decide their end‐of‐life care. Conclusion: Older Asians prefer to make their own decisions after consulting others. Family members play an important role in helping older people plan their preferred end‐of‐life care arrangements, even acting as decision makers when older people become incapable of deciding for themselves. Relevance to clinical practice: Sufficient information should be provided to older people and their families for the older people to determine their preferred care. Helping families to understand and support the planned care and advance directives is a strategy for maximising family compliance with the care. Aims: To compare nurses' non‐optimal eating behaviours across different shifts, to examine whether non‐day shifts were related to deviation from optimal dietary behaviours compared with day shifts and whether such deviation was related to non‐optimal macronutrient intake. Design: This is a 4‐day intensive longitudinal study. Methods: A convenience sample of hospital nurses was recruited in Taiwan. From September 2018 through January 2019, 120 participants completed 4‐days of 24‐h dietary recalls. One‐way ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis H test were used to compare differences in energy and macronutrient intake and frequency of meals and snacking, respectively. Generalized linear regressions examined (1) the associations between shiftwork schedules and non‐optimal eating behaviours and (2) associations between non‐optimal eating and high energy contribution of non‐optimal macronutrients. Results: Nurses consumed less energy on evening and night shifts compared with day shifts. However, energy intake from snacking was higher on evening and night shifts relative to day shifts. Nurses consumed less meals but had higher snacking frequency on non‐day shifts. In addition, high energy intake from snacking was positively associated with high energy intake from saturated fat. Conclusions: Nurses were more likely to have non‐optimal eating behaviours on non‐day shifts, which may contribute to an increased intake of saturated fat; thus, increasing their risk of chronic diseases. Strategies to improve non‐day shift nurses' non‐optimal eating behaviours may be beneficial to their health. Impact Shiftwork is known to affect nurses' eating behaviours; however, which shift is associated with unhealthy eating remains inconclusive. Despite lower energy intakes, nurses had higher intake by snacking on evening and night shifts. High snacking intake was associated with a high intake of saturated fat. Aims and Objectives: To investigate the characteristics and prevalence of demoralisation syndrome among heart transplantation patients in Taiwan. Background: Patients with end‐stage heart failure who have undergone cardiac transplantation are at risk of demoralisation syndrome. Demoralisation syndrome has been studied in cancer populations, but our understanding of the syndrome among heart transplant recipients is limited. Design and Methods: The study adopted a cross‐sectional design and analysed the baseline data from a longitudinal study with cardiac transplant patients at a heart centre in northern Taiwan. A structured questionnaire, namely the Demoralization Scale‐Mandarin Version (DS‐MV), was used to assess demoralisation syndrome. Hierarchical regression was applied to determine the predictors of demoralisation. Reporting was consistent with the STROBE checklist. Results: There were a total of 84 participants with an average age of 51.9 years and a time since heart transplantation of around 4.1 years. Among them, the prevalence of demoralisation syndrome was 35.8%, and 57.1% coped well with stress. In addition, on the DS‐MV, participants tended to choose sentences with positive rather than negative wording. Our data showed that cardiac transplant recipients with stress have higher possibility suffering from demoralisation syndrome; poor renal function and those who cannot relive from stress are predictors for loss of meaning. Conclusions: Chinese individuals tend to hide their weaknesses; nevertheless, demoralisation syndrome among cardiac transplant recipients, as related to stress status and kidney function, is still remarkable. Relevance to clinical practice: Since demoralisation is preventable, further research on this phenomenon in the cardiac transplant population is warranted and needs to be developed. Aims and objectives: To test a mediating effect of compassion satisfaction on the relationship between personality traits (Big Five) and intent to leave. Background: Nursing professionals work in high‐stress environments and exhibit more emotional distress and mental health disorders than other hospital professionals. This translates to increased intention to leave their profession. Evidence suggests that compassion satisfaction reduces intention to leave. Research also indicates that personality factors are associated with compassion satisfaction and intent to leave. Design: Using a cross‐sectional design, we collected data from 536 nurses in a maximum‐care hospital in Germany via questionnaires; the analyses included 518 participants. Method: We applied the structural equation model and followed the STROBE checklist. Results: 30% of our study participants reported high intent to leave. Compassion satisfaction mediated the relationship between agreeableness and intent to leave. Openness to experience and neuroticism had positive direct effects on intent to leave. Conclusions: The results suggest that high compassion satisfaction levels may decrease intention to leave levels. Personality traits impact compassion satisfaction and intention to leave. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nursing professionals' compassion satisfaction needs to be improved, for example by resilience training. As personality factors remain relatively stable over time, caregivers need to consider them when identifying appropriate areas of work and responsibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a delirium prevention care protocol on pain, functional status, sleep quality and delirium prevention in patients with hip fractures. Background: The development of delirium following hip fracture is common among older patients. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 30% of delirium cases are preventable. The prevention of delirium, a multifactorial syndrome, can be achieved through a multicomponent care protocol that targets specific risk factors for delirium. Design: A randomised controlled study was conducted according to the CONSORT 2010 guidelines. The Clinical Trial Registry number is NCT04188795. Methods: A total of 84 patients were assigned to two groups by block randomisation. The intervention group (n = 41) received nursing care according to a protocol and the control group (n = 43) received standard nursing care. Study data were collected using the demographic information form, the Confusion Assessment Method‐Intensive Care Unit (CAM‐ICU), the Barthel Index, the Mini Nutritional Assessment–short form and the Richards–Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ). The pain of the patients was assessed by using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: The mean age of the patients was 80.6 years (standard deviation 8.0; range 65.0– 97.5 years), and the percentage of the male patients were 36.3%. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in terms of pain and functional status in the preoperative period, on the first postoperative day, or in the predischarge period (p > 0.05 for each). The sleep quality of patients in the intervention group was significantly better than in the control group for all three time measurements (p < 0.05 for each). While 15% of patients in the control group developed delirium, no patient in the intervention group developed delirium (x2=6.486, p = 0.026). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that a delirium prevention care protocol may reduce the incidence of delirium and improve sleep quality. Relevance to practice: The study highlighted that nurses can contribute to preventing patients' delirium using nonpharmacologic and independent nursing interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To compare levels of nurse burnout across eastern and western cultures, as well as examine the influence of burnout on patient safety cross‐culturally. Design: Comparative cross‐sectional study. Methods: Survey data were collected from nurses between August and October 2017 in Australia (n = 730) and between April and October 2019 in China (n = 1107). Variables included burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment), nurse leadership and support, staffing and resource adequacy, and perceived patient safety. Data were analysed separately for each jurisdiction using bootstrapped hierarchical regressions, which tested the relationships between burnout indicators and patient safety, controlling for support resources. Results: Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores were significantly higher in the Australian sample compared with the Chinese sample. Australian participants reported significantly lower patient safety grades than Chinese participants and were less likely to agree that support resources were present in their current job. Separate regressions indicated that patient safety was significantly associated with staffing and resource adequacy, nurse leadership and support, and depersonalization among Australian participants (30% of variance explained in the final regression model), while staffing and resource adequacy, nurse leadership and support, personal accomplishment and emotional exhaustion predicted patient safety for Chinese participants (22% of variance explained in the final model). Conclusion: Australian nurses are at greater risk of burnout than Chinese nurses. Burnout dimensions are differentially associated with patient safety across cultures. Culturally relevant interventions may be more optimal than universal approaches for improving burnout and patient safety in nursing. Impact: This study increased understanding of cross‐cultural differences in nurse burnout and the relationship with patient safety. Australian nurses were at greater risk of burnout than Chinese nurses. Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment influenced patient safety distinctively across the countries.
