This research was conduct to determine the situation of learning mathematics physics online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants in this study were physics semester 4th students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar with 21 students. Data collection techniques include online interviews and questionnaires. The collected data analyzed by reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study describe the learning process of mathematical physics not conducive during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The problem that arises in the form of difficulty lectures in teaching explicit physics material that has many mathematical formulas and calculations. The difficulty on the part of students is that students experience limited costs to buy internet quota in online learning. The lecturer provides the solution by creating a mathematical physics module that is given in stages. This module is presented with language and examples of questions that are easily understood by students through the google classroom application. Lectures also occasionally use the zoom application, and Google meets to explain the material that is difficult to understand.

Teaching disciplines of physics and mathematics in the age of information technology requires innovative teaching methods application. These methods complement traditional forms; they are aimed at developing the systematic and creative thinking of students. The disciplines of the physical and mathematical profile include such discipline as “Equations of Mathematical Physics”. They help students develop skills in creating mathematical models of physical processes and phenomena. It is advisable to apply software packages to create computer models of situational problems when studying the discipline “Equations of Mathematical Physics”. The mathematical packages application makes it possible to take various situations by changing the input parameters of the model on the basis of computer models of physical processes. The problems of mathematical physics are based on the study of the second-order partial differential equations of three main types: hyperbolic, elliptic, and parabolic. The paper discusses the mathematical package MathCad application in the study of free and forced vibrations of a string. Mathematical models of free and forced oscillations are presented. The d’Alembert formula for solving equations of hyperbolic type is presented. The authors describe stages of the study of free vibrations of the membrane in MathCad. Bessel functions are constructed. Membrane surface animation has been created. Observations of membrane vibrations were carried out.

The study of physical phenomena that include conservative principles is part of the research field of the equations of mathematical physics. To deepen in methods to solve the equations of mathematical physics is a contribution in understanding the modeling of applications in different areas. This research studies the physical phenomenon of heat transport with convection from the viewpoint of modeling with differential equations. The advantage of working with equations is to apply the techniques of mathematical analysis and numerical methods to obtain the temperature function. In the research, the solution of the heat transport model is computed according to the analytical method of separable variables in order to represent the temperature function as a trigonometric series. With the help of a simple numerical method, it is possible to derive a scheme of calculation of the temperature function. By performing a case study, the methods are compared, and their fit is verified by simulation.

The use of the method of lines in solving multidimensional problems of mathematical physics makes it possible to eliminate the discrepancies caused by the use of the sweep method in certain coordinates. As a result, the solution of the Poisson equation, for example, is obtained without using the relaxation method. In the article, the problem on the eigenvalues and vectors of the transition matrix is solved for boundary conditions of the third and first types, used to solve a one-dimensional equation of parabolic type by the method of lines. Due to the features of boundary conditions of the third type for determining the eigenvalues, a mixed method was proposed based on the Vieta theorem and the representation of the characteristic equation in trigonometric form typical for the method of lines. To solve the eigenvector problem, a simple sweep method was used with the algebraic compliments to the transition matrix. Discontinuous solutions of a one-dimensional parabolic equation were presented for various values of complex 1 -αl; the method for solving the characteristic equation was selected based on these values. The calculation results are in good agreement with the analytical solution.

The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activity in Mathematical Physics learning has helped students perform the stages of problem solving reflectively. The FGD implementation was conducted to explore the problems and find the right strategy to improve the students' ability to solve the problem accurately which is one of reflective thinking component that has been difficult to improve. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by using single subject response in Physics student. During the FGD process, one student was observed of her reflective thinking development in solving the physics problem. The strategy chosen in the discussion activity was the Cognitive Apprenticeship-Instruction (CA-I) syntax. Based on the results of this study, it is obtained the information that after going through a series of stages of discussion, the students' reflective thinking skills is increased significantly. The scaffolding stage in the CA-I model plays an important role in the process of solving physics problems accurately. Students are able to recognize and formulate problems by describing problem sketches, identifying the variables involved, applying mathematical equations that accord to physics concepts, executing accurately, and applying evaluation by explaining the solution to various contexts.

We present a list of open questions in mathematical physics. After a historical introduction, a number of problems in a variety of different fields are discussed, with the intention of giving an overall impression of the current status of mathematical physics, particularly in the topical fields of classical general relativity, cosmology and the quantum realm. This list is motivated by the recent article proposing 42 fundamental questions (in physics) which must be answered on the road to full enlightenment (Allen and Lidstrom 2017 Phys. Scr. 92 012501). But paraphrasing a famous quote by the British football manager Bill Shankly, in response to the question of whether mathematics can answer the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, mathematics is, of course, much more important than that.

A modified collocation method for the numerical solving boundary value problems of mathematical physics is proposed. The irregular arrangement of collocation nodes in the problem solving domain can sharply increase the accuracy of the numerical solution by improving the quality of the linear algebraic equations system, to which the solved boundary value problem leads. Various basis functions systems are considered. The proposed method allows one to obtain an approximate solution of boundary value problems for a wide range of linear and nonlinear elliptic, parabolic and wave equations in an analytical form. This numerical method makes it possible to significantly expand the application field of traditional numerical methods when solving applied problems for modelling fields of various physical natures, described by linear and nonlinear equations of mathematical physics. The developed method is used to solve a quantum-mechanical problem for a hydrogen molecule ion. The results obtained in this work show the high potentialities of the complete collocation method, which are based on the universality of the method and high accuracy of numerical solutions. The energy of the ion ground state calculated with the minimum number of collocation nodes differs from the experimentally obtained value by 13%.

In this article the computational experiment on the numerical solution of the most popular linear inverse problems for equations of mathematical physics are presented. The discretization of retrospective inverse problem for parabolic equation is performed using difference scheme with non-positive weight multiplier. Similar difference scheme is also used for the numerical solution of Cauchy problem for two-dimensional Laplace equation. The results of computational experiment, performed on model problems with exact solution, including ones with randomly perturbed input data are presented and discussed.

In this article, an efficient analytical technique, called Sumudu variational iteration method (SVIM), is used to obtain the solution of fractional partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics. The fractional derivatives are described in terms of Caputo sense. This method is the combination of the Sumudu transform (ST) and variational iteration method (VIM). The solution of the suggested technique is represented in a series form, which is convergent to the exact solution of the given problems. Furthermore, the results of the present method have shown close relations with the exact approaches of the investigated problems. Illustrative examples are discussed, showing the validity of the current method. The attractive and straightforward procedure of the present method suggests that this method can easily be extended for the solutions of other nonlinear fractional-order partial differential equations.

In this paper, we apply a new technique, namely fractional Sumudu homotopy analysis method (FSHAM) on fractional partial differential equations to obtain the analytical approximate solutions. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. This method is the combination of the Sumudu transform (ST) and homotopy analysis method (HAM). The method in general is easy to implement and yields good results. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the new technique.

The collection of papers in this volume was presented during the X Mexican School on Gravitation and Mathematical Physics, which was held in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, December 1-5, 2014. The Mexican School on Gravitation and Mathematical Physics is a series of conferences sponsored by the Mexican Physical Society that started in 1994 with the purposes of discussing and exchanging current ideas in gravitational physics. Each Mexican School has been devoted to a particular subject, and these have included supergravity, branes, black holes, the early Universe, observational cosmology, quantum gravity and numerical relativity. In this ocasion the theme of the school was Reaching a Century: Classical and Modified General Relativity's Attempts to explain the evolution of the Universe, which focused on the discussion of classical and modified aspects of general relativity. Following our previous Schools, world leaders in the field were invited to give courses and plenary lectures. More specialized talks were also presented in parallel sessions, and some of them have been included in these proceedings. The contributions in this volume have been reviewed and represent some of the courses, plenary talks and contributed talks presented during our X School. We are indebted to the contributors of these proceedings as well as to the rest of the participants in our Mexican School all for making of it a complete success. A quantum chain model of many molecule motors is proposed as a mathematical physics theory on the microscopic modeling of classical force-velocity relation and tension transients of muscle fibre. We proposed quantum many-particle Hamiltonian to predict the force-velocity relation for the slow release of muscle fibre which has no empirical relation yet, it is much more complicate than hyperbolic relation. Using the same Hamiltonian, we predicted the mathematical force-velocity relation when the muscle is stimulated by alternative electric current. The discrepancy between input electric frequency and the muscle oscillation frequency has a physical understanding by Doppler effect in this quantum chain model. Further more, we apply quantum physics phenomena to explore the tension time course of cardiac muscle and insect flight muscle. Most of the experimental tension transients curves found their correspondence in the theoretical output of quantum two-level and three-level model. A relationship between generalized hypergeometric functions of a special type and modified Bessel functions has been established. Using this relationship the solution of inhomogeneous differential equations of Bessel type containing even degrees of an independent variable in the right-hand part can be expressed in a form convenient for engineering and technical applications.

We describe a method, based on "hard" contact topology, of showing the existence of semi-infinite trajectories of contact Hamiltonian flows which start on one Legendrian submanifold and asymptotically converge to another Legendrian submanifold. Oceanic internal waves often have curvilinear fronts and propagate over vertically sheared currents. We present the first study of long weakly-nonlinear internal ring waves in a three-layer fluid in the presence of a horizontally uniform background current with a constant vertical shear. The leading order of this theory leads to the angular adjustment equation—a nonlinear first-order ordinary differential equation describing the dependence of the linear long-wave speed on its angle to the direction of the current. The compact ring waves, well studied in the absence of a current, correspond to the singular solution (envelope of the general solution) of this equation, and they can exist only under certain conditions. The constructed solutions reveal qualitative differences in the shapes of the wavefronts of the two baroclinic modes: the wavefront of the faster mode is elongated in the direction of the current, while the wavefront of the slower mode is squeezed. Moreover, depending on the vorticity strength, several different regimes have been identified. When the vertical shear is weak, part of the wavefront is able to propagate upstream, while when the shear is strong enough, the whole wavefront propagates downstream. A richer pattern of behaviour is observed for the slower mode. As the shear increases, singularities of the swallowtail-type may arise and, eventually, solutions with compact wavefronts crossing the downstream axis cease to exist. We show that the latter is related to the long-wave instability of the base flow. We obtain the cKdV-type amplitude equation and examine analytical expressions for its coefficients. Using this cKdV-type equation we numerically model the evolution of the waves for both modes. The initial stage of the evolution is in agreement with the leading-order predictions for the deformations of the wavefronts. Then, as the wavefronts expand, strong dispersive effects occur in the upstream direction. Moreover, when nonlinearity is enhanced, fission of waves is observed in the upstream part of the ring waves.

Rate-induced tipping (R-tipping) occurs when time-variation of input parameters of a dynamical system interacts with system timescales to give genuine nonautonomous instabilities. Such instabilities appear as the input varies at some critical rates and cannot, in general, be understood in terms of autonomous bifurcations in the frozen system with a fixed-in-time input. This paper develops an accessible mathematical framework for R-tipping in multidimensional nonautonomous dynamical systems with an autonomous future limit. We focus on R-tipping via loss of tracking of base attractors that are equilibria in the frozen system, due to crossing what we call regular R-tipping thresholds. These thresholds are anchored at infinity by regular R-tipping edge states: compact normally hyperbolic invariant sets of the autonomous future limit system that have one unstable direction, orientable stable manifold, and lie on a basin boundary. We define R-tipping and critical rates for the nonautonomous system in terms of special solutions that limit to a compact invariant set of the autonomous future limit system that is not an attractor. We focus on the case when the limit set is a regular edge state, introduce the concept of edge tails, and rigorously classify R-tipping into reversible, irreversible, and degenerate cases. The central idea is to use the autonomous dynamics of the future limit system to analyse R-tipping in the nonautonomous system. We compactify the original nonautonomous system to include the limiting autonomous dynamics. Considering regular R-tipping edge states that are equilibria allows us to prove two results. First, we give sufficient conditions for the occurrence of R-tipping in terms of easily testable properties of the frozen system and input variation. Second, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of reversible and irreversible R-tipping in terms of computationally verifiable (heteroclinic) connections to regular R-tipping edge states in the autonomous compactified system.

We consider Lagrangians that are defined only on the horizontal distribution of a sub-riemannian manifold. The associated Hamiltonian is neither strictly convex nor coercive. We prove a result on homogenization of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation following the approach in Contreras et al (2015 Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 52 237–52). To establish the result, we need to extend weak KAM and Aubry–Mather theories to the sub-riemannian setting. We obtain a Tonelli theorem to dispend of the Lagrangian dynamics tools used in standard weak KAM theory. In the way towards our main result we observe that, the long time convergence of the Lax-Oleinik semigroup, and the vanishing discount convergence of the discounted value function hold.

We consider the classical momentum- or velocity-dependent two-dimensional Hamiltonian given by $$\mathcal H_N = p_1^2 + p_2^2 +\sum_{n=1}^N \gamma_n(q_1 p_1 + q_2 p_2)^n ,$$ where $q_i$ and $p_i$ are generic canonical variables, $\gamma_n$ are arbitrary coefficients, and $N\in \mathbb N$. For $N=2$, being both $\gamma_1,\gamma_2$ different from zero, this reduces to the classical Zernike system. We prove that $\mathcal H_N$ always provides a superintegrable system (for any value of $\gamma_n$ and $N$) by obtaining the corresponding constants of the motion explicitly, which turn out to be of higher-order in the momenta. Such generic results are not only applied to the Euclidean plane, but also to the sphere and the hyperbolic plane. In the latter curved spaces, $\mathcal H_N $ is expressed in geodesic polar coordinates showing that such a new superintegrable Hamiltonian can be regarded as a superposition of the isotropic 1:1 curved (Higgs) oscillator with even-order anharmonic curved oscillators plus another superposition of higher-order momentum-dependent potentials. Furthermore, the symmetry algebra determined by the constants of the motion is also studied, giving rise to a $(2N-1)$th-order polynomial algebra. As a byproduct, the Hamiltonian $\mathcal H_N $ is interpreted as a family of superintegrable perturbations of the classical Zernike system. Finally, it is shown that $\mathcal H_N$ (and so the Zernike system as well) is endowed with a Poisson $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb R)$-coalgebra symmetry which would allow for further possible generalizations that are also discussed., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures. We consider the eigenvalues of non-Hermitian random matrices in the symmetry class of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble, which are known to form a Pfaffian point process in the plane. It was recently discovered that the limiting correlation kernel of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble in the vicinity of the real line can be expressed in a unified form of a Wronskian. We derive scaling limits for variations of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble and obtain such Wronskian structures for the associated universality classes. These include almost-Hermitian bulk/edge scaling limits of the elliptic symplectic Ginibre ensemble and edge scaling limits of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble with boundary confinement. Our proofs follow from the generalised Christoffel-Darboux formula for the former and from the Laplace method for the latter. Based on such a unified integrable structure of Wronskian form, we also provide an intimate relation between the function in the argument of the Wronskian in the symplectic symmetry class and the kernel in the complex symmetry class which form determinantal point processes in the plane., Comment: v1: 29 pages, 4 figures; v2: 30 pages, 5 figures

Measure-theoretic slow entropy is a more refined invariant than the classical measure-theoretic entropy to characterize the complexity of dynamical systems with subexponential growth rates of distinguishable orbit types. In this paper we prove flexibility results for the values of upper and lower polynomial slow entropy of rigid transformations as well as maps admitting a good cyclic approximation. We present an algorithm for a rigorous computation of lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of Julia sets for a wide class of holomorphic maps. We apply this algorithm to obtain lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets of some infinitely renormalizable real quadratic polynomials, including the Feigenbaum polynomial $p_{\,\mathrm{Feig}}(z)=z^2+c_{\,\mathrm{Feig}}$. In addition to that, we construct a piecewise constant function on $[-2,2]$ that provides rigorous lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets of all quadratic polynomials $p_c(z) = z^2+c$ with $c \in [-2,2]$. Finally, we verify the conjecture of Ludwik Jaksztas and Michel Zinsmeister that the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of a quadratic polynomial $p_c(z)=z^2+c$, is a $C^1$-smooth function of the real parameter $c$ on the interval $c\in(c_{\,\mathrm{Feig}},-3/4)$., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we prove Morse index theorems for a big class of constrained variational problems on graphs. Such theorems are useful in various physical and geometric applications. Our formulas compute the difference of Morse indices of two Hessians related to two different graphs or two different sets of boundary conditions. We consider the 3D cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) with a strong toroidal trap. In the first part, we show that as the confinement is strengthened, a large class of global solutions to the time-dependent model can be described by 1D flows solving the 1D periodic NLS (Theorem 1.4). In the second part, we construct a steady state as a constrained energy minimizer, and prove its dimension reduction to the well-known 1D periodic ground state (Theorem 1.6 and 1.7). Then, employing the dimension reduction limit, we establish the local uniqueness and the orbital stability of the 3D ring soliton (Theorem 1.8). These results justify the emergence of stable quasi-1D periodic dynamics for Bose-Einstein condensates on a ring in physics experiments., Comment: 52 pages

We investigate critical points of a Landau–de Gennes (LdG) free energy in three-dimensional (3D) cuboids, that model nematic equilibria. We develop a hybrid saddle dynamics-based algorithm to efficiently compute solution landscapes of these 3D systems. Our main results concern (a) the construction of 3D LdG critical points from a database of two-dimensional (2D) LdG critical points and (b) studies of the effects of cross-section size and cuboid height on solution landscapes. In doing so, we discover multiple-layer 3D LdG critical points constructed by stacking 2D critical points on top of each other, novel pathways between distinct energy minima mediated by 3D LdG critical points and novel metastable escaped solutions, all of which can be tuned for tailor-made static and dynamic properties of confined nematic liquid crystal systems in 3D.

Fully localised patterns involving cellular hexagons or squares have been found experimentally and numerically in various continuum models. However, there is currently no mathematical theory for the emergence of these localised cellular patterns from a quiescent state. A key issue is that standard techniques for one-dimensional patterns have proven insufficient for understanding localisation in higher dimensions. In this work, we present a comprehensive approach to this problem by using techniques developed in the study of axisymmetric patterns. Our analysis covers localised patterns equipped with a wide range of dihedral symmetries, avoiding a restriction to solutions on a predetermined lattice. The context in this paper is a theory for the emergence of such patterns near a Turing instability for a general class of planar reaction-diffusion equations. Posing the reaction-diffusion system in polar coordinates, we carry out a finite-mode Fourier decomposition in the angular variable to yield a large system of coupled radial ordinary differential equations. We then utilise various radial spatial dynamics methods, such as invariant manifolds, rescaling charts, and normal form analysis, leading to an algebraic matching condition for localised patterns to exist in the finite-mode reduction. This algebraic matching condition is nontrivial, which we solve via a combination of by-hand calculations and Gr\"obner bases from polynomial algebra to reveal the existence of a plethora of localised dihedral patterns. These results capture the essence of the emergent localised hexagonal patterns witnessed in experiments. Moreover, we combine computer-assisted analysis and a Newton-Kantorovich procedure to prove the existence of localised patches with 6m-fold symmetry for arbitrarily large Fourier decompositions. In this work we study the orbital stability/instability in the energy space of a specific family of periodic wave solutions of the general ϕ 4 n -model for all n ∈ N . This family of periodic solutions are orbiting around the origin in the corresponding phase portrait and, in the standing case, are related (in a proper sense) with the aperiodic Kink solution that connect the states − v 2 with v 2 . In the traveling case, we prove the orbital instability in the whole energy space for all n ∈ N , while in the standing case we prove that, under some additional parity assumptions, these solutions are orbitally stable for all n ∈ N . Furthermore, as a by-product of our analysis, we are able to extend the main result in (de Loreno and Natali 2020 arXiv:2006.01305) (given for a different family of equations) to traveling wave solutions in the whole space, for all n ∈ N .

We study the magnetic geodesic flows on 2-surfaces having an additional first integral which is independent of the Hamiltonian at a fixed energy level. The following two cases are considered: when there exists a quadratic in momenta integral, and also the case of a rational in momenta integral with a linear numerator and denominator. In both cases certain semi-Hamiltonian systems of PDEs appear. In this paper we construct exact solutions (generally speaking, local ones) to these systems: in the first case via the generalized hodograph method, in the second case via the Legendre transformation and the method of separation of variables., 22 pages
