Since power transformers are valuable components of power networks, reliable determination of the remaining lifetime of a transformer is very important for power utilities. Power transformers consist of oil, a core, wire, and paper (cellulose), and their performance and remaining useful lifetime depend on the state of the oil-impregnated paper. Changing the oil over the lifetime of a transformer is possible, but it is not possible to change the insulation paper. Thus, the end of the paper lifetime will also be the end of the transformer lifetime (typically more than 40 years). Load profile classification is very important in load forecast, planning and management. Although customers are generally grouped by utilities into residential, commercial classes and respective subclasses, there is a lack of systematic framework that can be used to characterize different classes with signatures that are both human-readable and machine-readable. The work presented in this paper attempts to formulate the theoretical framework for customer classification using the annual load profiles. This paper demonstrates how to extract characteristic attributes in frequency domain (CAFD) and use these CAFDs to formulate a hierarchy of load profiles that can be used as the systematic framework for customer load classification. As signatures for customer classes and subclasses, the CAFDs are obtained by using a data mining method called CART (classification and regression tree). The paper presents a load profile classification test to establish the efficacy of the proposed approach which is significant improvement over current practices that provide mostly qualitative labeling. Multiphase variable-speed drives and generation systems (systems with more than three phases) have become one of the mainstream research areas during the last decade. The main driving forces are the specific applications, predominantly related to the green agenda, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs), locomotive traction, ship propulsion, “more-electric” aircraft, remote offshore wind farms for electric energy generation, and general high-power industrial applications. As a result, produced body of significant work is substantial, making it impossible to review all the major developments in a single paper. This paper therefore surveys the recent progress in two specific areas associated with multiphase systems, namely power electronic supply control and innovative ways of using the additional degrees of freedom in multiphase machines for various nontraditional purposes. This paper proposes a new cableless transportation system that associates a magnetic actuator with the piping system in which it travels. To achieve high-speed transport within the pipe, the proposed actuator must show excellent movement characteristics. An aluminum pipe was cut in half longitudinally, and an alternating current was passed through the cut piping. The proposed cableless actuator powered by an electric current supplied by an electric brush was demonstrated to be capable of high-speed movement in a curved pipe. A scheme of attaching a cargo container to a nodal point of the actuator using a flexible rod was also proposed. The experimental results show that the actuator can be driven through the pipe even when the curved pipe is nearly U-shaped. Furthermore, the cableless actuator transporting a cargo mass of 30 g can be driven at a speed of 87.9 cm/s in a curved aluminum pipe with a curvature angle of 22.5°. Development of smart grid technologies has created a promising atmosphere for smart cities and energy trading markets. Especially, traditional electricity consumers evolve into prosumers who produce as well as consume electricity in modern power electric systems. In this evolution, the electric power industry has tried to introduce the notion of local energy markets for prosumers. In the local energy market, prosumers purchase electricity from distributed energy generators or the other prosumers with surplus electricity via a local power exchange center. For this purpose, this paper proposes joint geometric clustering and truthful auction schemes in the local energy markets. The proposed clustering scheme is designed for distribution fairness of the distributed energy generator for serving prosumers, where the scheme is inspired by expectation and maximization based unsupervised learning. Moreover, this paper proposes an auction mechanism for truthful electricity trading in a local energy market. In order to guarantee truthful electricity trading, the proposed auction mechanism is constructed based on the Vickrey–Clarke–Groves auction, which was proven to guarantee truthful operations. The Hungarian method is also considered in addition to the auction. In this part of the paper (Part II), available technical solutions to minimize or prevent wildfires caused by power networks are reviewed in more detail. These methods include fundamental changes to power system equipment, periodic checkups and maintenance, identification of faults via voltage/current waveforms, changes to protection and relaying settings and coordination, and installation of new power system apparatus. The strengths and drawbacks of each method are discussed. The discussion section brainstorms some future possible solutions that smart-grid technologies can enable. The paper concludes that there has neither been enough research in universities nor enough investment by industry to develop viable preventive solutions for wildfires that initiate from the daily operation of electrical power grids. Pricing multi-interval economic dispatch of electric power under operational uncertainty is considered in this two-part paper. Part I investigates dispatch-following incentives of profit-maximizing generators and shows that, under mild conditions, no uniform-pricing scheme for the rolling-window economic dispatch provides dispatch-following incentives that avoid discriminative out-of-the-market uplifts. A nonuniform pricing mechanism, referred to as the temporal locational marginal pricing (TLMP), is proposed. As an extension of the standard locational marginal pricing (LMP), TLMP takes into account both generation and ramping-induced opportunity costs. It eliminates the need for the out-of-the-market uplifts and guarantees full dispatch-following incentives regardless of the accuracy of the demand forecasts used in the dispatch. It is also shown that, under TLMP, a price-taking market participant has incentives to bid truthfully with its marginal cost of generation. Part II of the paper extends the theoretical results developed in Part I to more general network settings. It investigates a broader set of performance measures, including the incentives of the truthful revelation of ramping limits, revenue adequacy of the operator, consumer payments, generator profits, and price volatility under the rolling-window dispatch model with demand forecast errors. As high-speed railways develop rapidly worldwide, the problems of neutral section and power quality are becoming increasingly prominent. These problems affect the normal operation of the power grid and the electric locomotives. The co-phase power supply schemes were proposed by researchers, which can solve these problems well. Among them, the MMC-based scheme (MMC-5 L) is a representative one. The existing scheme, when applied to the auto-transformer (AT)-fed system which is usually adopted by high-speed railways, needs to install an auto-transformer on the output side. To eliminate the auto-transformer and to obtain the more suitable and superior co-phase power supply schemes to AT-fed system, two improved schemes are proposed in this paper based on the novel MMC-based scheme (MMC-6 L) we proposed before. While establishing the mathematical model, creating the control system, and carrying out simulation verification of the proposed schemes, the proposed schemes are compared with MMC-6 L and MMC-5 L in terms of topological characteristics, control system complexity, power loss, and functionality. The results show that while the proposed schemes can fulfill the functions of the co-phase power supply scheme well like the MMC-5 L and MMC-6 L, they are more suitable and superior for the AT-fed system in terms of control system complexity and power loss. The electric drive power density and fault tolerance capability are of fundamental importance in many applications such as aerospace and traction applications. The modularization and the physical integration of the electric motor and the power converter components can lead to a high power density and a high fault tolerance drive system. The power density of a highly modular and integrated drive based on an axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine and GaN converter is investigated in this paper. Several power density boosting techniques are provided and investigated using CFD simulations. These techniques incorporate optimization of the converter topology, the geometry of the shared cooling structure of the electric machine and the power converter and optimal selection of the materials in the path of heat transfer from the machine and the power converter to the cooling ambient. The power density of the reference integrated design is increased from 1.12 kW/ $l$ to 2.14 kW/ $l$. The CFD computations are validated by extensive measurements on a modular integrated setup. This paper is concerned with the use of a three-level inverter for a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM). The SynRM suffers from a poor power factor due to poor machine saliency. This makes it harder to operate the three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter due to a strict requirement to have the two dc-link capacitor voltages balanced. This paper proposes a new nearest three vector modulation algorithm which can balance the two dc-link capacitors even at poor machine saliency ratio (poor power factor). In this paper, a method of sizing the two dc-link capacitors based on the machine power is also proposed. A comparison between two- and three-level inverters was conducted. Energy harvesting has attracted increased attention recently. Energy sources are present all around us, such as, mechanical vibrations, stress, strain, waste heat, sunlight or room light, electromagnetic rays, and chemical or biological sources. Vibration generators based on piezoelectric elements have been highlighted as low-power sources; however, their output power is very low, around the milliwatt or microwatt level, and thus, improving their performance is necessary to make the generated power usable. This paper investigates the use of passive devices to improve output characteristics of the vibration generators. The proposed circuits are a resonator and a passive rectifier. The proposed resonator consists of a parallel inductor and capacitor for $LC$ resonance. The $LC$ resonance equivalently reduces the internal capacitor of the piezoelectric elements. As a result, the output voltage and power are increased compared with that of conventional circuits. In addition, a boost-type current-improving passive rectifier is applied as the passive rectifier. In the process of electromagnetic launch, the melting on the armature surface tends to change the state of the armature/rail (AR) contact. Once the contact state is damaged, transition will appear easily. For this reason, it is necessary to analyze the factors affecting the melting characteristics of the armature surface. According to the Reynolds equation listed for the liquid metal film (LMF) on the AR contact interface, and by coupling the temperature, stress, and electromagnetic fields, this paper presents a thermoelastic magnetohydrodynamic model, which is used to analyze effects of the current waveform, and the length and angle of the armature tail on the surface melting rate and LMF thickness. The results show that for the same armature, if we want to achieve the same velocity within the same time range, the smoother the current waveform, the slower the surface melting rate and the thinner the minimum LMF thickness, and that for armatures of different key dimensions, in a certain range, the longer the armature tail, the slower the surface melting rate, but the larger the total melting amount and the thicker the minimum LMF thickness, and that the angle of armature tail has little effect on melting characteristics of the armature surface. Near threshold computing (NTC) systems have been inherently plagued with heightened process variation (PV) sensitivity. Choke points are an intriguing manifestation of this PV sensitivity. In this paper, we explore the probability of minimum timing violations, caused by choke points, in an NTC system, and their nontrivial impacts on the system reliability. We show that conventional timing error mitigation techniques are inefficient in tackling choke point-induced minimum timing violations. Consequently, we propose a comprehensive error mitigation technique, Trident, to tackle choke points at NTC. Trident offers a $1.37\times $ performance improvement and a $1.11\times $ energy-efficiency gain over Razor at NTC with minimal hardware and power overheads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The control of reactive power exchange between grids of different voltage levels has always been a concern for system operators. With production moving from the transmission to the distribution level, its importance increases. This paper proposes a novel approach to estimate reactive power capability of the grid as a whole. A linearized analytical model for an estimation of available reactive power exchange at the interface between two grids has been developed. The maximum estimation error for the scenarios we tested was only 2%. The model gives the relation between important grid parameters and the supported reactive power. The conclusions drawn from the model are confirmed on typical Swedish distribution network with scattered wind power and small industry consumers. Common scenarios in development of distribution grids are applied to show relevant parameters influence. One studied scenario is replacement of overhead lines with cables. It is shown that this particular change enhances the reactive power capability of the grid which is directly seen from the analytical analysis without running any optimal power flow. This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic model of grid-connected combined heat and power (CHP) system that can effectively simulate the thermoelectric interactions and examine the impact of the CHP on the power grid. Based on the theorems of mass balance and energy balance, this paper studies and analyses the principles and dynamic characteristics of the main CHP components, including gas internal combustion engine, synchronous generator, waste heat exchanger, water storage tank, exhaust-heat boiler, and gas fired boiler. Then, the nonlinear time-domain models for each component are built against input and output parameters in order to facilitate the study of CHP operation under various conditions. Subsequently, a simulation method that can deal with the coupling of all models with different time constants is proposed. Finally, dynamic simulation analysis of the developed CHP model is carried out on the MATLAB/Simulink. Extensive demonstration results show that the developed models are accurate to represent the thermoelectric interactions in the gird-connected CHP and capture the impact of these gird-connected CHPs on the power grid. This paper, as an outcome of the EU project AREUS, heralds an optimization procedure that reduces up to 30% of energy consumption and up to 60% in peak power for the trajectories that have been tested on real industrial robots. We have evaluated a number of cost functions and tested our algorithm for a variety of scenarios such as varying cycle times, payloads, and single/multirobot cases in both ac- and dc-operated robot cells. The significance of our work is not only in the impressive savings, simplicity of implementation, and preserving path and cycle time, but also in the variety of test scenarios that include different kinds of KUKA robots. This paper presents the flexible dc capacitor voltages balancing control method for star-connected cascaded H-bridge converters. In this paper, the power flows are analyzed by investigating all the converter's control freedoms. Based on the analyses, users can accomplish the dc capacitor voltage balancing with both negative-sequence current and zero-sequence voltage. These two kinds of control options are further integrated together with the defined weighting factor $K$. The low-voltage ride-through operation of a proposed control method is also discussed in this paper. The control method is verified with a 220-V 1-kVA static synchronous compensators based on the star-connected cascaded H-bridge converters, and the experimental test results show that all the dc voltages are well regulated at the commanded value with different weighting factor $K$. Dynamic wireless charging (DWC) is one of the most promising and economical power supply solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), which can address range anxiety and downsize the volume of onboard batteries. To solve the null power phenomenon and transfer power pulsation phenomenon in DWC scheme, this paper proposes a new magnetic coupler array to implement continuous charging and reduce the output power variation. The transmitters are placed with a proper interval to eliminate the adjacent coupling and enlarge the coil array’s effective length. ANSYS Maxwell is utilized to demonstrate the finite element analysis (FEA) of the DWC system. A larger receiver coil is designed to significantly mitigate power pulsation and increase the magnetic coupling as the receiver moves along the array. With the well-designed receiver coil, the output power pulsation is $\pm$ 1.52 $\%$. For the high-power capacity scenario, a multilevel connected DC-DC converter is designed on the receiver side to regulate the transfer power. Besides, a passivity-based control (PBC) is developed for the receiving DC-DC converter based on the Euler-Lagrange (EL) model, and a current sharing compensator is employed to balance each phase inductor current. Modern power systems face several problems at frequencies above the range of traditional stability studies due to the increasing penetration of power electronic devices. This phenomenon has been recently referred to as electromagnetic transient stability and is a growing issue in systems with power electronic converters at any power and voltage level, such as FACTS, high-voltage DC, interfaces for grid connection of renewable energies, custom power devices for power quality enhancement, among others. The study of power systems stability is usually carried out by simulation tools that represent the power system through phasor models. However, due to the faster dynamics of modern systems, the harmonic interaction among the controllers, converters, and electric power components, recent research results suggest that some stability analyses should be conducted with models suitable for wider frequency ranges, e.g., electromagnetic transient models. This paper reviews the use of frequency domain methods to analyze the influence of the modeling approach of passive power components on the results of electromagnetic transient stability studies. Solid state disks (SSDs) employ internal parallelism to boost their input/output (I/O) performance, but a high degree of flash parallelism inevitably consumes a high level of current. To budget power or support multiple power sources, system software may force an SSD into a new power mode that has a specific current supply limit. This paper introduces a firmware approach to optimize SSD internal parallelism subject to a current supply limit. The proposed method involves two steps. First, we constructed current models of flash operations on the basis of real-world measurement results. Second, we designed a firmware scheduler to determine the actual starting time of each flash operation. The proposed scheduler accounted for flash aging, process variation, and internal resource contention, and it avoided any current cap violation by checking a few time points instead of every unit of time. The main technical challenge of the medium-voltage motor drives with modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the serious low-frequency fluctuation on the capacitor voltages, and the existing suppression methods inevitably inject high-frequency circulating currents in MMC. However, the output currents are evidently distorted by the large injected components, while little research has been done to study and solve this problem. This paper analyzes and proves the essential interactions between the output current distortion and the injected components, and the specific dominant output harmonic groups are derived and summarized, revealing the nature of the problem, and it can be taken as a favorable reference for the controller designing. Based on the derivations, this paper proposes a novel suppression method for the greatly improved harmonic characteristics of the output currents during the low-frequency operation. The output harmonics can be accurately measured by the proposed control and effectively suppressed for much lower current total harmonic distortion, benefiting for the superior output control performances with improved efficiency. The simulation results on PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental verifications on a 2.2 kW MMC-based motor drive prototype prove the validity of the presented harmonic analysis and suppression method. Microgrid usually associated with distributed renewable energy sources plays a key role in reducing the requirement of traditional power sources and the emission of CO2. Connecting multiple microgrids to the electric power grid can facilitate a more powerful and reliable operation. Microgrids need decentralized dispatch with the requirement of security and privacy, and at the same time, they need to cooperate to satisfy the constraints from the power grid. We consider online decentralized and cooperative dispatch problem in this paper. In order to capture the randomness in the wind and solar power generation and the system dynamics, we formulate the problem as a decentralized Markov decision process (Dec-MDP). We propose a new method to calculate the approximate Q-value functions by constructing the initial feasible policy with reasonable space and time complexity. Bayesian games (BGs) is applied to model the decentralized dispatch with delayed communication in order not to slow down the online decision-making. Also, the alternating minimization method is used to solve this BGs based on the approximate Q-value functions. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is very effective in reducing the state space and computing time and achieving the requirement of real-time scheduling. Note to Practitioners—Motivated by the problem of decentralized dispatch of multi-microgrids in grid-connected mode, we consider the online decentralized operation and pay special attention to the grid tie-line power fluctuation. This problem is challenging due to the randomness of the renewable power generation, the global constraints about multiple microgrids, and the correlation among stages. We model the decentralized dispatch problem as a rolling horizon Dec-MDP and provide an approximate solution method, namely, alternately minimizing among different microgrids at the online stage and calculating approximate value functions in the offline preparation process. The approximate value functions make the online decision turn out to be a single-stage decentralized decision problem. Online decision calculation based on delayed communication is to guarantee all the microgrids to start conducting an action immediately while receiving the information related to them. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology that can realize electric power transmission over certain distances without physical contact, offering significant benefits to modern automation systems, medical applications, consumer electronics, etc. This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing compensation topologies for the loosely coupled transformer. Compensation topologies are reviewed and evaluated based on their basic and advanced functions. Individual passive resonant networks used to achieve constant (load-independent) voltage or current output are analyzed and summarized. Popular WPT compensation topologies are given as application examples, which can be regarded as the combination of multiple blocks of resonant networks. Analyses of the input zero phase angle and soft switching are conducted as well. Overall electric energy conservation and improvement in electrical energy efficiency has been a topic of interest to the electric power industry for long time, since 40% of total primary energy used is in the form of electricity. There are many facets to the energy conservation and/or energy efficiency techniques. Energy conservation by voltage reduction popularly called “CVR” has recently gained some momentum, in particular, to reduce the peak demand. This is also an integral part of the discussion in the future smarter grid technology. This paper addresses the pros and cons of the CVR application including a thorough literature search, practical applications, and a quantifiable measure of its actual amount of energy saving from utilities and the cost associated with it. Power electronics is a fast-developing technology within the electrical engineering field. This paper presents the results and experiences gained from applying design-oriented project-based learning to switch-mode power supply design in a power electronics course at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Project-based learning (PBL) is known to be a motivating problem-centered teaching method that not only places students at the core of teaching and learning activities but also gives them the ability to transfer their acquired scientific knowledge into industrial practice. Students choose a specification to implement from various power converter application projects, such as a fuel cell power conditioning converter, a light-emitting diode (LED) driver or a battery charger. The students select the topology, design magnetic components, calculate input/output filters and design closed-loop controllers necessary to fulfill the requirements listed in the chosen specification and thus meet the project's goals. As a reliable power network is crucial to deliver promised electric power, cable powerline monitoring in medium-voltage networks has a great importance for distribution system operators all over the world. A considerable rate of failures in cable powerlines is referred to the cable joints. Especially during the summer period, an excessive number of joints are subjected to explosion, causing outages in different points of the power network. To this purpose, in this paper, using a simple test setup presented in a previous work, the effects of temperature on the cable joint tan delta measurement have been evaluated. In this paper, we propose an approach to the design of a magnetostrictive electric power generator for energy harvesting from traffic, and we validate it experimentally. We use the dynamic Preisach hysteresis model (DPM) for magnetostrictive materials, operating in hysteretic and time-varying nonlinear regimes to design and simulate a magnetostrictive electrical power generator. The DPM is a development of the classical Preisach model, which is able to include the dynamical features in the mathematical model of hysteresis. Risk of blackouts is more than expected and must be considered in the power system studies. The interest of this paper is to minimize the blackouts risk during minimizing the costs in probabilistic transmission expansion planning (TEP). In this paper, a long-term reliability analysis, which was developed by self-organized criticality theory, is used in a multi-objective optimization to include risk of blackouts in TEP. The objective functions are costs and expected energy not supplied. Also, a new formulation for calculating transmission operating cost as a part of cost function is proposed. The problem is solved by a multi-objective particle swarm optimization to find an optimal Pareto set from which the decision-maker can choose the most desirable one, regarding existing budget. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE 118-bus test system to investigate its applicability and scalability. The results are compared with security-constrained TEP, which uses famous deterministic criterion known as N-1. The proposed approach produces more efficient plans for suppressing cascading blackouts with less network investment. Modeling of the differential power sensor based on microelectromechanical systems seesaw membrane is proposed in this paper. When the microwave power is applied, the center part of the membrane is pulled down toward the substrate, while two end parts are turned away from the substrate. The proposed model is based on the theory of simply supported membrane. The displacement of membrane and the capacitance change are both calculated as a function of the incident power. The microwave performance measurement shows that the return loss is less than -12.5 dB and the insertion loss is better than 1.5 dB over 1-10 GHz. The power response measurement demonstrates that the capacitance change magnitudes ΔCin and ΔCout both increase with the microwave power, which agrees with the proposed model. Transmission and distribution (T&D) networks are a critical part of the power grid. As moving towards a smart-grid, it is essential to modernize the T&D networks and make it “Smart-grid ready”. The concept of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) has been well-known for three decades. Rapid advancements in power electronics technology in the past decades have led to a new generation of FACTS devices. The Modern FACTS technology helps the transition of transmission networks to “smart”. With increasing penetration of distributed generation, the distribution network is seeing unprecedented variation in terms of its fundamental operation and control, from renewable energy integration to microgrid, from active control of power quality, volt/var and frequency to self-healing and islanding operation. As a key part of smart-grid at the distribution level, we summarize the current efforts as a concept of resilient ac distribution systems (RACDS). The concepts of both FACTS and RACDS for a smart grid are introduced in this paper. Different configurations, key benefits, operating principles and world-wide installations of FACTS and RACDS devices are presented in detail. Autotransformer (AT) traction network (ATN) expands widely with the rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR). The fault occurrence in ATN will affect the safety and reliability of power supply for electric multiple units (EMUs). However, due to the nonlinear relationship between measured impedance and distance, the accuracy and efficiency of the fault location for ATN is facing serious challenges, especially with the diverse fault types and operation modes. In this paper, the general circuit topology of subsections is given and the characteristics of voltage distribution are analyzed according to the impedance matrix of ATN. Through the decoupling method, a comprehensive equivalent model adopting composite impedance is established, which can illustrate a series of characteristics for all fault types. Furthermore, the fault-location method is proposed to express the mapping between the fault position and the relevant electrical quantities for the subsection, and then a reasonable compensation for the effect of mutual impedance between faulty and non-faulty subsections is provided to improve the accuracy. Consequently, the multi-terminals synchronous information is employed for unified fault-location for ATN. Tokamak device requires a very high current power supply from the local power distribution sources to the targeted magnets such as toroidal field (TF) coils and poloidal field (PF) coils. This paper presents a preliminary design of a 30-m/1-kV/10-kA low voltage direct current (LVDC) superconducting cable for the potential in Tokamak applications. The outer diameter of the DC cable is 122.41 mm, and the pressure drop of liquid nitrogen (LN2) in the inner and outer channels is about 6.59 kPa. The flow velocity of inner and outer LN2 channels are 0.5 m/s and 0.25 m/s, respectively. The temperature rise of the entire cable was designed to be less than 5 K, which enhances the electricity supply safety and reliability. These preliminary design lays some technical bases for achieving high current and low loss power transmission. This paper combines the use of multi-phase configurations and current harmonic injection methods to achieve significantly improved performance for doubly salient synchronous reluctance machines (DS-SRMs). In order to understand the torque production mechanism of multi-phase DS-SRMs with current harmonic injection, some general analytical torque models have been developed. The models are based on Fourier Series analysis of self- and mutual-inductances. It has been established that with current harmonic injection, the torque ripple of both 5-phase and 6-phase DS-SRMs can be significantly reduced and the average torque can be enhanced. It contrast, harmonic injection always has a detrimental impact on 4-phase machines. The investigations of losses and dynamic performance with current harmonic injection for multi-phase machine have also been carried out and demonstrated that the proposed method can improve the efficiency in constant torque region and maintain comparable performance to fundamental current supply in the flux weakening region. This paper provides an overview of hyperloop technologies, including a brief discussion of key components of a hyperloop system that determine the electric power requirements as a function of time. At-scale hyperloop systems do not yet exist, so a model was used to generate a set of load profiles for conceptual hyperloop realizations at four locations in the United States: two systems in California and one each in Colorado and Ohio. In all four cases, the modeled hyperloop load profiles included pulses in both active and reactive power. Grid modeling was performed to estimate the grid impacts and for discussing grid integration challenges. The paper discusses how energy storage systems might be used to eliminate the pulsating load characteristics or significantly reduce it to accommodate current grid planning guidelines. Pricing multi-interval economic dispatch of electric power under operational uncertainty is considered in this two-part paper. Part I investigates dispatch-following incentives for generators under the locational marginal pricing (LMP) and temporal locational marginal pricing (TLMP) policies. Extending the theoretical results developed in Part I, Part II evaluates a broader set of performance measures under a general network model. For networks with power flow constraints, TLMP is shown to have an energy-congestion-ramping price decomposition. Under the one-shot dispatch and pricing model, this decomposition leads to a nonnegative merchandising surplus equal to the sum of congestion and ramping surpluses. It is also shown that, comparing with LMP, TLMP imposes a penalty on generators with limited ramping capabilities, thus giving incentives for generators to reveal their ramping limits truthfully and improve their ramping capacities. Several benchmark pricing mechanisms are evaluated under the rolling-window dispatch and pricing models. The performance measures considered are the level of out-of-the-market uplifts, the revenue adequacy of the system operator, consumer payment, generator profit, level of discriminative payment, and price volatility. The feeder reconfiguration problem chooses the on/off status of the switches in a distribution network in order to minimize a certain cost such as power loss. It is a mixed-integer nonlinear program and, hence, hard to solve. In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm that is based on the recently developed convex relaxation of the ac optimal power flow problem. The algorithm is computationally efficient and scales linearly with the number of redundant lines. It requires neither parameter tuning nor initialization for different networks. It successfully computes an optimal configuration on all four networks we have tested. Moreover, we have proved that the algorithm solves the feeder reconfiguration problem optimally under certain conditions for the case where only a single redundant line needs to be opened. We also propose a more computationally efficient algorithm and show that it incurs a loss in optimality of less than 3% on the four test networks. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

To respond to volatility and congestion in the power grid, demand response (DR) mechanisms allow for shaping the load compared to a base load profile. When tapping on a large population of heterogeneous appliances as a DR resource, the challenge is in modeling the dimensions available for control. Such models need to strike the right balance between accuracy of the model and tractability. The goal of this paper is to provide a medium-grained stochastic hybrid model to represent a population of appliances that belong to two classes: deferrable or thermostatically controlled loads. We preserve quantized information regarding individual load constraints, while discarding information about the identity of appliance owners. The advantages of our proposed population model are 1) it allows us to model and control load in a scalable fashion, useful for ex-ante planning by an aggregator or for real-time load control; 2) it allows for the preservation of the privacy of end-use customers that own submetered or directly controlled appliances.
