In this paper, we study the issue of selecting the transmission power (energy per symbol) to minimize the expected energy required to successfully deliver a link-layer packet to the destination node in a wireless link performing the automatic repeat request. We consider the system that has a slow-fading channel and employs a minimum mean square error-based channel estimation scheme for a pilot symbol-assisted modulation. We derive a closed-form expression for the packet error probability (PkEP) in the presence of channel estimation error, and we use this expression for minimizing the PkEP in allocating the transmission energy among the pilot and data symbols. We also derive the expected energy required to successfully deliver a link-layer packet as a function of the transmission power and present an optimization method based on the properties of this function. Recently, the first version of the fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) standard with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has been finished by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), with initial deployments occurring in 2018. Despite the major advances in 5G, there are still many challenges remaining. 6G and beyond will require even higher data rates, lower latencies, better energy efficiency, and improved robustness. Multiple antenna technologies, which have played important roles in nearly all recent wireless standards, will be key to addressing these challenges. MIMO research continues to evolve, and new MIMO research topics such as enhanced massive MIMO techniques and array architectures hold much potential for 6G and beyond. Cell-free massive MIMO utilize a large number of distributed access points (APs) that jointly serve users in a coordinated fashion, using only local channel state information at each AP. While the performance of cell-free massive MIMO can be analyzed using a similar methodology as in cellular massive MIMO, the fundamental limits, signal processing, and resource allocation are substantially different. In order to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, beamspace MIMO has been proposed to significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains by using lens antenna arrays or phase shifters. Alternatively, the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) concept involves electromagnetically controllable surfaces that can be integrated into large-scale infrastructure such as building walls, airports, and stadiums. There are active and partially passive forms of large intelligent surface (LIS), and variants with either large antenna spacing or continuous aperture. There are also some substantial differences between the new multiple antenna technologies and traditional MIMO systems, such as transceiver design and propagation models. An accurate discrimination on moisture status of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) bushings is crucial for the maintenance and replacement schedule of bushings. Based on frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) measurement and Dissado–Hill (DH) relaxation model, this article proposes a hybrid approach of hidden Markov model and gray wolf optimization (GWO-HMM) for MS estimation of bushings subjected to the ununiform moisture distribution and dynamic time-series modeling. First, simulation models of moisture diffusion and FDS of the OIP bushing were constructed using finite element modeling approach. Then, the GWO algorithm was employed to explore dielectric parameters influenced by moisture in the DH model. Then, the GWO-HMMs was adopted as a classification tool to discriminate the MS of the simulation and experimental data of the bushings. Classification results confirm that the average identification accuracies of the proposed method are 97.17% and 96.81% over these two datasets, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed moisture estimate method for OIP bushings. The papers in this special section focus on advanced signal procesing for local and private 5G mobile communication netwworks. The papers describe the latest advances in emerging private 5G networks from the perspective of signal processing to advance its theoretical underpinnings and practical applications. Some enterprises, factories and other potential users have ultra-stringent communications performance requirements in terms of throughput, latency, reliability, availability, and device density, which cannot be met by 4G long term evolution (LTE) radio features. The fifth generation New Radio vehicle-to-everything (5G NR-V2X) has higher requirements for delay and reliability, which brings challenges to the physical layer signal processing. Mobile edge computing (MEC) can provide larger capacity data storage and more efficient computation through localization of on-board unit (OBU) and next generation Node B (gNB) services. This paper combines the channel estimation of New Radio vehicle-to-infrastructure (NR-V2I) communication baseband signal processing with MEC and designs an intelligent channel estimation framework. In the MEC server, this paper proposes a channel estimation algorithm based on deep learning. This algorithm uses a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) to complete frequency-domain interpolation and conditional recurrent unit (CRU) for time-domain state prediction. Additional velocity coding vector and multipath coding vector track changes in the environment, and accurately train channel data in different mobile environments. System simulation and analysis show that the proposed algorithm improves the channel estimation accuracy, reduces the bit error rate, and enhances the robustness compared with the representative channel estimation algorithms for NR-V2I. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as a promising candidate for energy-efficient solutions in future wireless networks. Their dynamic and low-power configuration enables coverage extension, massive connectivity, and low-latency communications. Due to a large number of unknown variables referring to the RIS unit elements and the transmitted signals, channel estimation and signal recovery in RIS-based systems are the ones of the most critical technical challenges. To address this problem, we focus on the RIS-assisted wireless communication system and present two joint channel estimation and signal recovery schemes based on message passing algorithms in this paper. Specifically, the proposed bidirectional scheme applies the Taylor series expansion and Gaussian approximation to simplify the sum-product procedure in the formulated problem. In addition, the inner iteration that adopts two variants of approximate message passing algorithms is incorporated to ensure robustness and convergence. Two ambiguities removal methods are also discussed in this paper. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes show the superiority over the state-of-art benchmark method. The papers in this special issue focus on array signal processing for angular models in massive MIMO communications. This paper presents secrecy analyses of a full-duplex MIMOME network which consists of two full-duplex multi-antenna users (Alice and Bob) and an arbitrarily located multi-antenna eavesdropper (Eve). The paper assumes that Eve's channel state information (CSI) is completely unknown to Alice and Bob except for a small radius of secured zone. The first part of this paper aims to optimize the powers of jamming noises from both users. To handle Eve's CSI being unknown to users, the focus is placed on Eve at the most harmful location, and the large matrix theory is applied to yield a hardened secrecy rate to work on. The performance gain of the power optimization in terms of maximum tolerable number of antennas on Eve is shown to be significant. The second part of this paper shows two analyses of anti-eavesdropping channel estimation (ANECE) that can better handle Eve with any number of antennas. One analysis assumes that Eve has a prior statistical knowledge of its CSI, which yields lower and upper bounds on secure degrees of freedom of the system as functions of the number (N) of antennas on Eve and the size (K) of information packet. The second analysis assumes that Eve does not have any prior knowledge of its CSI but performs blind detection of information, which yields an approximate secrecy rate for the case of K being larger than N. In this paper, two different timing-mismatch compensation strategies for two-channel time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters are comprehensively analyzed and compared. In the first strategy (SA), one channel serves as a reference channel, and the other channel is compensated to match the reference channel using the timing mismatch between the channels. In the second strategy (SB), both channels are compensated to match each other, using half the value of the channel mismatch with different signs. For SB, the paper introduces a novel compensation structure that utilizes parallel differentiator-multiplier (PDM) branches. Expressions for the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) after compensation are derived for both strategies. These expressions reveal that the novel PDM structure achieves a remarkably greater SFDR than the existing cascaded differentiator-multiplier (CDM) compensation structure which can be used for both SA and SB. This is because, after compensation, the remaining aliasing distortion in the proposed PDM structure is shown to be of higher approximation order (in terms of the mismatch value) and thus substantially smaller than in the CDM structure. The optimal scheduling of interfering links in a dense wireless network with full frequency reuse is a challenging task. The traditional method involves first estimating all the interfering channel strengths and then optimizing the scheduling based on the model. This model-based method is, however, resource intensive and computationally hard because channel estimation is expensive in dense networks; furthermore, finding even a locally optimal solution of the resulting optimization problem may be computationally complex. This paper shows that by using a deep learning approach, it is possible to bypass the channel estimation and to schedule links efficiently based solely on the geographic locations of the transmitters and the receivers due to the fact that in many propagation environments, the wireless channel strength is largely a function of the distance-dependent path-loss. This is accomplished by unsupervised training over randomly deployed networks and by using a novel neural network architecture that computes the geographic spatial convolutions of the interfering or interfered neighboring nodes along with subsequent multiple feedback stages to learn the optimum solution. The resulting neural network gives a near-optimal performance for sum-rate maximization and is capable of generalizing to larger deployment areas and to deployments of different link densities. Moreover, to provide fairness, this paper proposes a novel scheduling approach that utilizes the sum-rate optimal scheduling algorithm over judiciously chosen subsets of links for maximizing a proportional fairness objective over the network. This paper investigates the noncoherent detection in a two-way relay channel operated with physical-layer network coding (PNC), assuming FSK modulation and short-packet transmissions. For noncoherent detection, the detector has access to the magnitude but not the phase of the received signal. For conventional communication in which a receiver receives the signal from a transmitter only, the phase does not affect the magnitude, and hence the performance of the noncoherent detector is independent of the phase. PNC, on the other hand, is a multiuser system in which a receiver receives signals from multiple transmitters simultaneously. The relative phase of the signals from different transmitters affects the received signal magnitude through constructive-destructive interference. In particular, for good performance, the noncoherent detector of a multiuser system such as PNC must take into account the influence of the relative phase on the signal magnitude. Building on this observation, this paper delves into the fundamentals of PNC noncoherent detector design. To avoid excessive overhead, we assume a set-up in which the short packets in the PNC system do not have preambles. We show how the relative phase can be deduced directly from the magnitudes of the received data symbols, and that the knowledge of the relative phase thus deduced can in turn be used to enhance performance of noncoherent detection. Our overall detector design consists of two components: 1) a channel gains estimator that estimates channel gains without preambles; and 2) a detector that builds on top of the estimated channel gains to jointly estimate relative phase and detect data using a belief propagation algorithm. Numerical results show that our detector performs nearly as well as a “fictitious” optimal detector that has perfect knowledge of the channel gains and relative phase. Although this paper focuses on PNC with FSK modulation, we believe that the insight of this paper applies generally to noncoherent detection in other multiuser systems with other modulations. Specifically, our insight is that the relative phase of overlapped signals affects the signal magnitude in multiuser systems, but fortunately the relative phase can be deduced from the magnitudes and this knowledge can be used to improve the detection performance. A hybrid communication network with a common analog source signal and independent digital data streams at the transmitters of a multiple access network is considered. The receiver has to estimate the analog signal samples with a given fidelity, and decode the digital streams with a low error probability. The main goal of this paper is to characterize the optimal tradeoff between the mean-squared error distortion in source estimation and the data rates available to each user. To this end, we consider a Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC) setup with additive state, where the state is nothing but a scaled version of the source process itself. The state process is assumed to be non-causally available to all the transmitting nodes. The problem now becomes that of the joint state estimation and message communication in a GMAC with state. We provide a complete characterization of the optimal distortion-rate tradeoff for an $N$ —sender GMAC. Our results show that, similar to the single-user results, it is optimal to amplify the state using uncoded transmissions, whereas the digital streams are superposed using appropriate Gaussian codebooks in conjunction with dirty paper coding (DPC). Since the variance of the additive state is controlled by a scaling factor in our model, we also recover the results for communicating a common source and independent messages over a GMAC without state as a special case. The read channel of a Flash memory cell degrades after repetitive program and erase (P/E) operations. This degradation is often modeled as a function of the number of P/E cycles. In contrast, this paper models the degradation as a function of the cumulative effect of the charge written and erased from the cell. Based on this modeling approach, this paper dynamically allocates voltage using lower voltage write thresholds at the beginning of the device lifetime and increasing the thresholds as needed to maintain the mutual information of the read channel in the face of degradation. This paper introduces the technique in an idealized setting and then removes ideal assumptions about channel knowledge and available voltage resolution to conclude with a practical scheme with performance close to that of the idealized setting. This paper shows that deep neural network (DNN) can be used for efficient and distributed channel estimation, quantization, feedback, and downlink multiuser precoding for a frequency-division duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output system in which a base station (BS) serves multiple mobile users, but with rate-limited feedback from the users to the BS. A key observation is that the multiuser channel estimation and feedback problem can be thought of as a distributed source coding problem. In contrast to the traditional approach where the channel state information (CSI) is estimated and quantized at each user independently, this paper shows that a joint design of pilots and a new DNN architecture, which maps the received pilots directly into feedback bits at the user side then maps the feedback bits from all the users directly into the precoding matrix at the BS, can significantly improve the overall performance. This paper further proposes robust design strategies with respect to channel parameters and also a generalizable DNN architecture for varying number of users and number of feedback bits. Numerical results show that the DNN-based approach with short pilot sequences and very limited feedback overhead can already approach the performance of conventional linear precoding schemes with full CSI. Millimeter-wave rotary-wing (RW) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) links face unpredictable Doppler effect arising from the inevitable wobbling of RW UAV. Moreover, the time-varying channel characteristics during transmission lead to inaccurate channel estimation, which in turn results in the deteriorated bit error probability performance of the UAV A2G link. This paper studies the impact of mechanical wobbling on the Doppler effect of the millimeter-wave wireless channel between a hovering RW UAV and a ground node. Our contributions of this paper lie in: i) modeling the wobbling process of a hovering RW UAV; ii) developing an analytical model to derive the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) for the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link in a closed-form expression; and iii) investigating how RW UAV wobbling impacts the Doppler effect on the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. Numerical results show that different RW UAV wobbling patterns impact the amplitude and the frequency of ACF oscillation in the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. The use of antenna arrays is indispensable in radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications areas, as it permits the treatment of wavefronts in the spatial domain, enabling important applications such as beamforming and target detection. Spatial information is commonly given in terms of spatial correlation functions (SCFs), but its representation in terms of angular domain, such as the power azimuth spectrums (PASs), is sometimes more convenient. Therefore, transforming from SCF to PAS, and vice versa, is often required. This is commonly done by employing so-called beamformers, where the Bartlett beamformer (BB) is the most commonly utilized. However, the use of beamformers alone is not enough for retrieving PAS information from a given SCF. Particularly, this paper shows that a non-linear operation is missing in relating SCFs to PASs as provided by current beamformers. The paper also shows the mathematical expressions that correctly relate SCFs to PASs and wavenumber spectrums (WNSs) for the general case of systems with antenna arrays. This paper considers the uplink performance of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system with mobile users. Mobility brings two major problems to a MIMO-OFDM system: inter carrier interference (ICI) and channel aging. In practice, it is common to allot multiple contiguous subcarriers to a user as well as schedule multiple users on each subcarrier. Motivated by this, we consider a general subcarrier allocation scheme and derive expressions for the ICI power, uplink signal to interference plus noise ratio and the achievable uplink sum-rate, taking into account the ICI and the multi-user interference due to channel aging. We show that the system incurs a near-constant ICI power that depends linearly on the ratio of the number of users per subcarrier to the number of subcarriers per user, nearly independently of how the UEs distribute their power across the subcarriers. Further, we exploit the coherence bandwidth of the channel to reduce the length of the pilot sequences required for uplink channel estimation. We consider both zero-forcing and maximal-ratio combining at the receiver and compare the respective sum-rate performances. In either case, the subcarrier allocation scheme considered in this paper leads to significantly higher sum-rates compared to previous work, owing to the near-constant ICI property as well as the reduced pilot overhead. Spatial modulation (SM) is one special type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique whose advantage is that only one radio-frequency (RF) chain is needed. Recently, the so-called cross Z-complementary pair (CZCP) was proposed as the SM training sequence. Optimal channel estimation performance over frequency-selective channels can be achieved since the CZCPs have the specific zero correlation zone (ZCZ) for auto-correlation and cross-correlation sums. However, the ZCZ width of the CZCP is theoretically upper bounded by half sequence length. In this paper, the CZCP is extended to the cross Z-complementary set (CZCS) to have larger ZCZ width which can be used in SM to combat larger delay spread. Several generic constructions of CZCSs with large ZCZ widths and flexible lengths are proposed in this paper. Even the perfect CZCS, whose ZCZ width has the maximum value, can be obtained. This paper proves an impossibility result for stochastic network utility maximization for multi-user wireless systems, including multiple access and broadcast systems. Every time slot an access point observes the current channel states for each user and opportunistically selects a vector of transmission rates. Channel state vectors are assumed to be independent and identically distributed with an unknown probability distribution. The goal is to learn to make decisions over time that maximize a concave utility function of the running time average transmission rate of each user. Recently it was shown that a stochastic Frank-Wolfe algorithm converges to utility-optimality with an error of $O(\log (T)/T)$ , where $T$ is the time the algorithm has been running. An existing $\Omega (1/T)$ converse is known. The current paper improves the converse to $\Omega (\log (T)/T)$ , which matches the known achievability result. It does this by constructing a particular (simple) system for which no algorithm can achieve a better performance. The proof uses a novel reduction of the opportunistic scheduling problem to a problem of estimating a Bernoulli probability $p$ from independent and identically distributed samples. Along the way we refine a regret bound for Bernoulli estimation to show that, for any sequence of estimators, the set of values $p \in [{0,1}]$ under which the estimators perform poorly has measure at least 1/6. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is capable of intelligently manipulating the phases of the incident electromagnetic wave to improve the wireless propagation environment between the base-station (BS) and the users. This paper addresses the joint user scheduling, RIS configuration, and BS beamforming problem in an RIS-assisted downlink network with limited pilot overhead. We show that graph neural networks (GNN) with permutation invariant and equivariant properties can be used to appropriately schedule users and to design RIS configurations to achieve high overall throughput while accounting for fairness among the users. As compared to the conventional methodology of first estimating the channels then optimizing the user schedule, RIS configuration and the beamformers, this paper shows that an optimized user schedule can be obtained directly from a very short set of pilots using a GNN, then the RIS configuration can be optimized using a second GNN, and finally the BS beamformers can be designed based on the overall effective channel. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can utilize the received pilots more efficiently than the conventional channel estimation based approach, and can generalize to systems with an arbitrary number of users. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a newly emerged technology that can increase the energy and spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. This paper considers an IRS-aided multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system, and presents a detailed analysis and optimization framework for the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of the downlink transmission over Rician fading channels. Unlike most of the prior works where the active beamformer at the base station (BS) and passive beamformer at the IRS are jointly designed based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI), this paper proposes a low-complexity transmission protocol where the IRS passive beamforming and BS power allocation coefficient vector are optimized in the large timescale based on the statistical CSI, and the BS transmit beamforming is designed in the small timescale based on only the instantaneous CSI of the effective BS-user channels. Therefore, the channel training overhead in each channel coherence interval under our proposed protocol is independent of the number of IRS reflecting elements, which is in sharp contrast to most of the prior works. By considering maximum-ratio transmit beamforming at the BS, we derive a lower bound of the ergodic WSR in closed-form. Then, we propose an efficient algorithm to jointly optimize the IRS passive beamforming and BS power allocation coefficient vector for maximizing the ergodic WSR lower bound. Numerical results validate the tightness of our derived WSR bound and show that the proposed scheme outperforms various existing schemes in terms of complexity or capacity performance. This two-part paper aims to quantify the cost of device activity detection in an uplink massive connectivity scenario with a large number of devices but device activities are sporadic. Part I of this paper shows that in an asymptotic massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) regime, device activity detection can always be made perfect. Part II of this paper subsequently shows that despite the perfect device activity detection, there is nevertheless significant cost due to device detection in terms of overall achievable rate, because of the fact that nonorthogonal pilot sequences have to be used in order to accommodate the large number of potential devices, resulting in significantly larger channel estimation error as compared to conventional massive MIMO systems with orthogonal pilots. Specifically, this paper characterizes each active user's achievable rate using random matrix theory under either maximal-ratio combining (MRC) or minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receive beamforming at the base station (BS), assuming the statistics of their estimated channels as derived in Part I. The characterization of user rate also allows the optimization of pilot sequences length. Moreover, in contrast to the conventional massive MIMO system, the MMSE beamforming is shown to achieve much higher rate than the MRC beamforming for the massive connectivity scenario under consideration. This paper proposes a deep learning approach to a class of active sensing problems in wireless communications in which an agent sequentially interacts with an environment over a predetermined number of time frames to gather information in order to perform a sensing or actuation task for maximizing some utility function. In such an active learning setting, the agent needs to design an adaptive sensing strategy sequentially based on the observations made so far. To tackle such a challenging problem in which the dimension of historical observations increases over time, we propose to use a long short-term memory (LSTM) network to exploit the temporal correlations in the sequence of observations and to map each observation to a fixed-size state information vector. We then use a deep neural network (DNN) to map the LSTM state at each time frame to the design of the next measurement step. Finally, we employ another DNN to map the final LSTM state to the desired solution. We investigate the performance of the proposed framework for adaptive channel sensing problems in wireless communications. In particular, we consider the adaptive beamforming problem for mmWave beam alignment and the adaptive reconfigurable intelligent surface sensing problem for reflection alignment. This paper focuses on channel prediction techniques for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Previous channel predictors are based on theoretical channel models, which would be deviated from realistic channels. In this paper, we develop and compare a vector Kalman filter (VKF)-based channel predictor and a machine learning (ML)-based channel predictor using the realistic channels from the spatial channel model (SCM), which has been adopted in the 3GPP standard for years. First, we propose a low-complexity mobility estimator based on the spatial average using a large number of antennas in massive MIMO. The mobility estimate can be used to determine the complexity order of developed predictors. The VKF-based channel predictor developed in this paper exploits the autoregressive (AR) parameters estimated from the SCM channels based on the Yule-Walker equations. Then, the ML-based channel predictor using the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based noise pre-processed data is developed. Numerical results reveal that both channel predictors have substantial gain over the outdated channel in terms of the channel prediction accuracy and data rate. This paper studies the ergodic rate performance of regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding in the downlink of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, where the channel between the base station (BS) and each user is modeled by the double scattering model. This non-Gaussian channel model is a function of both the antenna correlation and the structure of scattering in the propagation environment. This paper makes the preliminary contribution of deriving the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) channel estimate for this model. Then under the assumption that the users are divided into groups of common correlation matrices, this paper derives deterministic approximations of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the ergodic rate, which are almost surely tight in the limit that the number of BS antennas, the number of users, and the number of scatterers in each group grow infinitely large. The derived results are expressed in a closed-form for the special case of multi-keyhole channels. The simulation results confirm the close match provided by the asymptotic analysis for moderate system dimensions. Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets and Golay complementary sets (GCSs) have different correlation properties and hence have different engineering applications. A number of constructions of ZCZ sequence sets and GCSs have been proposed, respectively, in the literature. In addition, some ZCZ sequence sets can be constructed from mutually orthogonal GCSs. In this paper, the relationship between GCSs and ZCZ sets is discovered further. We propose a new type of sequence sets which are ZCZ sequence sets and also GCSs. They are called the Golay-ZCZ sequence sets in this paper. Therefore, they have low peak-to-average power ratios when employed in OFDM systems due to the good autocorrelation properties of GCSs. Besides, the Golay-ZCZ sets possess zero autocorrelations and cross-correlations within their ZCZ and hence have the potential application to synchronization. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an alternative topology for future wireless networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. Prior works have claimed that the CF massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular massive MIMO, namely, channel hardening and favorable propagation. In this paper, we evaluate if one can rely on these properties when having a realistic stochastic AP deployment. Our results show that channel hardening only appears in special cases, for example, when the pathloss exponent is small. However, by using 5–10 antennas per AP, instead of one, we can substantially improve the hardening. Only spatially well-separated users will exhibit favorable propagation, but when adding more antennas and/or reducing the pathloss exponent, it becomes more likely for favorable propagation to occur. The conclusion is that we cannot rely on the channel hardening and the favorable propagation when analyzing and designing the CF massive MIMO networks, but we need to use achievable rate expressions and resource allocation schemes that work well also in the absence of these properties. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technique for future wireless communication networks. How to reliably transmit information in a RIS-based communication system arouses much interest. This paper proposes a reflecting modulation (RM) scheme for RIS-based communications, where both the reflecting patterns and transmit signals can carry information. Depending on that the transmitter and RIS jointly or independently deliver information, RM is further classified into two categories: jointly mapped RM (JRM) and separately mapped RM (SRM). JRM and SRM are naturally superior to existing schemes, because the transmit signal vectors, reflecting patterns, and bit mapping methods of JRM and SRM are more flexibly designed. To enhance transmission reliability, this paper proposes a discrete optimization-based joint signal mapping, shaping, and reflecting (DJMSR) design for JRM and SRM to minimize the bit error rate (BER) with a given transmit signal candidate set and a given reflecting pattern candidate set. To further improve the performance, this paper optimizes multiple reflecting patterns and their associated transmit signal sets in continuous fields for JRM and SRM. This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) stand for a significant part of the total power consumption in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) base station. One-bit ADCs are one way to reduce power consumption. This paper presents an analysis of the spectral efficiency of single-carrier and orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) transmission in massive MIMO systems that use one-bit ADCs. A closed-form achievable rate, i.e., a lower bound on capacity, is derived for a wideband system with a large number of channel taps that employ low-complexity linear channel estimation and symbol detection. Quantization results in two types of error in the symbol detection. The circularly symmetric error becomes Gaussian in massive MIMO and vanishes as the number of antennas grows. The amplitude distortion, which severely degrades the performance of OFDM, is caused by variations between symbol durations in received interference energy. As the number of channel taps grows, the amplitude distortion vanishes and OFDM has the same performance as single-carrier transmission. This paper investigates coherent detection for physical-layer network coding (PNC) with short packet transmissions in a two-way relay channel (TWRC). PNC turns superimposed EM waves into network-coded messages to improve throughput in a relay system. To achieve this, accurate channel information at the relay is a necessity. Much prior work applies preambles to estimate the channel. For long packets, the preamble overhead is low because of the large data payload. For short packets, that is not the case. To avoid excessive overhead, we consider a set-up in which short packets do not have preambles. A key challenge is how the relay can estimate the channel and detect the network-coded messages jointly based on the received signals from the two end users. We design a coherent detector that makes use of a belief propagation (BP) algorithm to do so. For concreteness, we focus on binary frequency-shift-keying (FSK) modulation. We show how the BP algorithm can be simplified and made practical with Gaussian-mixture passing. In addition, we demonstrate that prior knowledge on the channel distribution is not needed with our framework. Benchmarked against the detector with prior knowledge of the channel distribution, numerical results show that our detector can have nearly the same performance without such prior knowledge. Cell-free Massive MIMO is considered as a promising technology for satisfying the increasing number of users and high rate expectations in beyond-5G networks. The key idea is to let many distributed access points (APs) communicate with all users in the network, possibly by using joint coherent signal processing. The aim of this paper is to provide the first comprehensive analysis of this technology under different degrees of cooperation among the APs. Particularly, the uplink spectral efficiencies of four different cell-free implementations are analyzed, with spatially correlated fading and arbitrary linear processing. It turns out that it is possible to outperform conventional Cellular Massive MIMO and small cell networks by a wide margin, but only using global or local minimum mean-square error (MMSE) combining. This is in sharp contrast to the existing literature, which advocates for maximum-ratio combining. Also, we show that a centralized implementation with optimal MMSE processing not only maximizes the SE but largely reduces the fronthaul signaling compared to the standard distributed approach. This paper addresses the channel estimation issue for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems with lens antenna array. Firstly, we formulate the channel estimation problem into the framework of sparse signal recovery. The formulation takes into account of the energy focusing property of the lens antenna array as well as the mutipath sparsity in mmWave MIMO channels. Then we develop an expectation maximization (EM) based algorithm to learn the parameters in the formulation, thereby fulfilling the channel estimation. This paper investigates the achievable performance of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at both the access points (APs) and users. A closed-form expression for the achievable rate is derived, which enables the study of the effects of AP number, antenna number per AP, user number, and ADC resolution on the achievable rate. In addition, a simple asymptotic approximation for the individual user rate is presented, which shows that the user rate is mainly constrained by the ADC resolution at the user. Moreover, we propose an ADC resolution bits allocation scheme aiming at maximizing the sum rate subject to the total ADC resolution bits constraint, which substantially outperforms the equal ADC resolution bits allocation scheme. Furthermore, a max–min power control scheme is proposed, which not only ensures user fairness, but also improves the achievable rate. The problem of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation at millimeter-wave frequencies, both in single-user setting and in multi-user setting, is tackled in this paper. Using a subspace approach, we develop a protocol enabling the estimation of the right (respectively, left) singular vectors at the transmitter (respectively, receiver) side; then, we adapt the projection approximation subspace tracking with deflation and the orthogonal Oja algorithms to our framework and obtain two-channel estimation algorithms. We also present an alternative algorithm based on the least squares approach. The hybrid analog/digital nature of the beamformer is also explicitly taken into account at the algorithm design stage. In order to limit the system complexity, a fixed analog beamformer is used at both sides of the communication links. The obtained numerical results, showing the accuracy in the estimation of the channel matrix dominant singular vectors, the system achievable spectral efficiency, and the system bit error rate, prove that the proposed algorithms are effective and that they compare favorably, in terms of the performance-complexity tradeoff, with respect to several competing alternatives. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently received extensive research interest due to its capability to intelligently change the wireless propagation environment. For RIS-aided wireless communications in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode, channel feedback at the user equipment (UE) is essential for the base station (BS) to acquire the downlink channel state information (CSI). In this paper, a dimension reduced channel feedback scheme is proposed to reduce the channel feedback overhead by exploiting the single-structured sparsity of BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel. Since different UEs share the same sparse BS-RIS channel but have their respective RIS-UE channels, there are only limited non-zero column vectors in the BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel matrix, and different UEs share the same indexes of the non-zero columns. Thus, the downlink CSI can be decomposed into user-independent channel information (i.e., the indexes of non-zero columns) and user-specific channel information (i.e., the non-zero column vectors), where the former for all UEs can be fed back by only one UE, while the latter can be fed back with a fairly low overhead by different UEs, respectively. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional method, the proposed scheme can reduce channel feedback overhead by more than 80% for RIS-aided wireless communications. This correspondence paper studies the impact of nonidentically distributed channel estimation error on performance of a scheduled space-time block coding with mean-value power allocation in cognitive-radio multiple-input multiple-output system. Using the derived probability density function, the exact closed-form expressions of the proposed system for outage probability, ergodic capacity, and symbol-error rate (SER) with both $\rm M$ -ary quadrature amplitude modulation and phase shift keying modulation are derived. Using asymptotic analysis, this paper quantifies the diversity order for both outage probability and SER in the presence of nonidentically distributed error. From the analysis results, this paper shows that the diversity order is enhanced by the multiuser diversity as the number of user terminals increases regardless of outage probability and SER, while the spatial diversity is eliminated. This paper investigates the performance analysis of dual selection (i.e., combining user selection and transmit antenna selection) with maximal ratio combining (MRC) over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation in a multiple-input multiple-output system. This paper derives the exact and approximate cumulative density function and probability density function (PDF) for the dual selection with MRC over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation. Using the distribution, the exact and approximate closed-form expressions of the outage probability are derived with quantification of diversity order. Further, this paper derived the exact ergodic capacity and approximate outage capacity of the the dual selection via Gaussian and Gamma approximations. The numerical results show that the capacity of the dual selection with MRC is enhanced by the number of receive antennas as well as the number of user terminals and sum of channel correlation coefficients, while the order of the receive spatial diversity for outage probability is eliminated by the nonidentical channel estimation error. This paper focuses on the problem of separately modulating and jointly estimating two independent continuous-valued parameters sent over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) under the mean square error (MSE) criterion without bandwidth constraints. To this end, we first improve an existing lower bound on the MSE that is obtained using the parameter modulation-estimation techniques for the single-user additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. As for the main contribution of this paper, this improved modulation-estimation analysis is generalized to the model of the two-user Gaussian MAC. We present outer bounds to the achievable region in the plane of the MSE’s of the two user parameters, which provides a trade-off between the MSE’s, where we used zero-rate lower bounds on the error probability of Gaussian channels by Shannon and Polyanskiy et al. Numerical results showed that, the multi-user adaptation of the zero-rate lower bound by Polyanskiy et al. provides a tighter overall lower bound on the MSE pairs than the classical Shannon bound. In addition, we introduced upper bounds on the MSE exponents, namely, the exponential decay rates of these MSE’s in the asymptotic regime of long blocks that could make use of any bound on the error exponent of a single-user AWGN channel. The obtained results are numerically evaluated for three different bounds on the reliability function of the Gaussian channel. It is shown that the adaptation of the reliability function by Ashikhmin et al. to the MAC provides a significantly tighter characterization than Shannon’s sphere-packing bound and the divergence bound. Multiple antenna techniques that allow energy beamforming have been looked upon as a possible candidate for increasing the transfer efficiency between the energy transmitter (ET) and the energy receiver in wireless power transfer. This paper introduces a novel scheme that facilitates energy beamforming by utilizing received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values to estimate the channel. First, in the training stage, the ET will transmit using each beamforming vector in a codebook, which is predefined using a Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis. RSSI value corresponding to each beamforming vector is fed back to the ET, and these values are used to estimate the channel through a maximum likelihood analysis. The results that are obtained are remarkably simple, requires minimal processing, and can be easily implemented. Cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) enable a network platform for beyond the fifth generation of communication networks (B5G), which incorporates the advances in cloud computing technologies to modern radio access networks. Recently, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna rate splitting (RS) at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, has been shown to manage the interference in multi-antenna communication networks efficiently. This paper considers applying RSMA in C-RAN. We address the practical challenge of a transmitter that only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) of the users. To this end, the paper investigates the problem of stochastic coordinated beamforming (SCB) optimization to maximize the ergodic sum-rate (ESR) in the network. Furthermore, we propose a scalable and robust RS scheme where the number of the common streams to be decoded at each user scales linearly with the number of users, and the common stream selection only depends on the statistical CSI. The setup leads to a challenging stochastic and non-convex optimization problem. A sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) based algorithm is adopted to tackle the intractable stochastic non-convex optimization and guarantee convergence to a stationary point asymptotically. The numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RS strategy and show a gain up to 27% in the achievable ESR compared with state-of-the-art schemes, namely treating interference as noise (TIN) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. In underwater acoustic (UWA) adaptive communication system, due to time-varying channel, the transmitter often has outdated channel state information (CSI), which results in low efficiency. UWA channels are much more difficult to estimate and predict than terrestrial wireless channels, given the more severe multipath environments with varying propagation speeds in different locations, non-linear propagation paths, several-order higher propagation latency, mobile transceiver and obstacles in the sea, etc. To handle the complexity, this paper proposes an efficient online CSI prediction model for UWA CSI prediction considering the complicated correlationship of UWA channels in both the time and frequency domains. This paper designs a learning model called CsiPreNet, which is an integration of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short term memory (LSTM) network. The performance is compared with the widely used recursive least squares (RLS) predictor, the approximate linear dependency recursive kernel least-squares (ALD-KRLS), and two common conventional deep neural networks (DNN) predictors, i.e., back propagation neural network (BPNN) and LSTM network using the measured data recorded in the South China Sea. To validate the efficacy of prediction, we investigate the prediction of CSI in simulated downlink UWA orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Specifically, the measured UWA channel is used in the OFDMA system. A joint subcarrier-bit-power adaptive allocation scheme is used for resource allocation. To further improve the performance, we develop an offline-online prediction scheme, enabling the prediction results to be more stable. Simulation and experimental results show that the CsiPreNet has superior performance than the existing solutions, thanks to its capability in capturing both the temporal and frequency correlation of the UWA CSIs. Light-fidelity (LiFi) is a fully-networked bidirectional optical wireless communication (OWC) technology that is considered as a promising solution for high-speed indoor connectivity. In this paper, the joint estimation of user 3D position and user equipment (UE) orientation in indoor LiFi systems with unknown emission power is investigated. Existing solutions for this problem assume either ideal LiFi system settings or perfect knowledge of the UE states, rendering them unsuitable for realistic LiFi systems. In addition, these solutions consider the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links of the LiFi channel gain as a source of deterioration for the estimation performance instead of harnessing these components in improving the position and the orientation estimation performance. This is mainly due to the lack of appropriate estimation techniques that can extract the position and orientation information hidden in these components. In this paper, and against the above limitations, the UE is assumed to be connected with at least one access point (AP), i.e., at least one active LiFi link. Fingerprinting is employed as an estimation technique and the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is used as an estimation metric, where both the line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS components of the LiFi channel are considered. Motivated by the success of deep learning techniques in solving several complex estimation and prediction problems, we employ two deep artificial neural network (ANN) models, one based on the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and the second on the convolutional neural network (CNN), that can map efficiently the instantaneous received SNR with the user 3D position and the UE orientation. Through numerous examples, we investigate the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of the average estimation error, precision, computational time, and the bit error rate. We also compare this performance to that of the k-nearest neighbours (KNN) scheme, which is widely used in solving wireless localization problems. This paper considers the massive connectivity problem in an asynchronous grant-free random access system, where a huge number of devices sporadically transmit data to a base station (BS) with imperfect synchronization. The goal is to design algorithms for joint user activity detection, delay detection, and channel estimation. By exploiting the sparsity on both user activity and delays, we formulate a hierarchical sparse signal recovery problem in both the single-antenna and the multiple-antenna scenarios. While traditional compressed sensing algorithms can be applied to these problems, they suffer high computational complexity and often require the perfect statistical information of channel and devices. This paper solves these problems by designing the Learned Approximate Message Passing (LAMP) network, which belongs to model-driven deep learning approaches and ensures efficient performance without tremendous training data. Particularly, in the multiple-antenna scenario, we design three different LAMP structures, namely, distributed, centralized and hybrid ones, to balance the performance and complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LAMP networks can significantly outperform the conventional AMP method thanks to their ability of parameter learning.
